ICARUS ACADEMY

Welcome to the Icarus Academy, a remote school hidden in the Carpathian Mountains, shielded from mortals. Demigods all over the world are sent here to learn and harness their abilities, and adapt to protect the real world from the dangers that lurk underneath the veil. Students from the four different mythologies; Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse, bleeding and integrating together to learn and grow. It's a place of safety and learning for demigods aged 13-18 years of age.

As the years have dwindled by, the unseen world of the Gods have slowly come to a quiet slumber. Humanity has been bustling and modernizing, while the ancient beings have begun to accept that their time have passed. Leaving the Demigods to fend for themselves as the direct line to the Gods has been shut off.

Icarus Academy, a resounding demigod institution still left amongst the sole few has begun to feel the effects. So few children are pouring in and even fewer have been returning. Safe havens for Demigods across the world are being slowly overtaken and destroyed one by one. Nobody knows how, and nobody knows why. With the Gods devoted army slowly thinning, the enemy will begin to seek ways to destroy the camp from within. Icarus has kept it's barriers strong, but small cracks and fissures are beginning to form and it's a matter of days before the walls come tumbling down. In an attempt to save the remainder of their race the school has sent some of their most promising and strongest pupils out to avenge their fallen and confront the unknown evil. And just maybe, find the Gods - their parents - that have gone silent.

The students of Icarus will face perhaps the most trying times of their lives in the struggle…if they make it to see the flip side of the war to come. Some will be recruited, some will die, and some may live to see their names written in the stars, but all that is about to be known soon is that destiny cannot be trusted to the Fates.

I. Welcome! I'm glad you have been interested enough to finally reach it to the rules. As you can see this is a mythology centered role-play in which a group of demigods from different mythologies; greek, roman, norse, Egyptian, are thrown together to try and find the gods. I do not have a set amount of roles nor do I have specific 'demigod' positions. I want YOU to pick whatever god you like from either mythology when creating your character and really have fun with it!

II. To reserve a character please leave, a face claim, name, godly parent, abilities (SEE RULE 3), and hex in the OOC. You will have 48 HOURS to submit a WIP, and I am going to be pretty strict about this as well.

III. Since I don't have set roles, I don't have set abilities as well for the demigods. That being said, in your reservation list three abilities relating to the godly parent that your character will have. For example, Astrid is a daughter of Thor, the God of Thunder and Strength. Therefore she has electricity manipulation, enhanced strength, and Electrokinetic Flight. Think creatively and don't overpower your character as it's good to have weakness. I do have the right to make some suggestions if I think a power is either too much or not related at all. I am aware that some powers may overlap and that is not a problem at all! But don't worry, I am very excited to see what you come up with.

IV. Like in every roleplay, activity plays a big part in keeping it alive. I don’t expect people to be online all day everyday, this is a hobby not a job. However, I expect a little heads up if there will be a hiatus. Remember to interact with everybody! It doesn’t matter if a starter was posted by the side you’re opposing, start drama, secret friendships, secret romances, make it all interesting and memorable!

The GM of this roleplay hasn't created any rules! You can do whatever you like!

Astrid glanced up from where she sat tortiously poking at her food as if to make it appear that she had actually ate something on her plate. For the first time in a few months the Mess Hall seemed happy - normal. There were smiles upon the faces of the other students and it seemed as if they too were cherishing their last moments at the Academy. How morbid. It had been a few days since Headmistress Galarius announced that one of their sister academies in the states had been attacked, it was the sixth one this month. One by one safe havens for demigods were slowly being picked from the Earth like ripe fruit from a tree. It was only a matter of time before Icarus joined the list. If the academies and camps being attacked were not worse enough, the line to the Gods had seemingly been shut off. Astrid hadn’t heard from her father since early March, and she’d be lying if she told herself it had not been slowly eating away at her. Just in the past few years her relationship with Thor had slowly begun to grow, and their chats soon became something of a weekly ordeal to Astrid’s enjoyment. She was grateful for her father’s interest as some Gods weren’t so interested in the lives of their children. It was then when Astrid approached Headmistress demanding they do something - it was a very Astrid thing to do. At that point, doing anything other than be sitting ducks would be beneficial in her mind. Of course it took some convincing, Galarius wasn’t just going to send her students to certain death. Thankfully, Astrid was able to ask around and recruit some of her fellow senior classmates with the help of Headmistress - a few choice ones she would’ve left out if it was her choice but Galarius insisted. And so here they were. There last night at Icarus for possibly, forever. Headmistress had taken the chosen few aside, she had arranged for a pilot to take them to Trondheim, Norway in the morning. In which the gateway to Asgard resided. She believed it best if they tried seeking out the Norse realm first as they seemed the most attached to their children. Not to mention it was the closest gate to the world of the Gods from the academy. The idea of a “rescue mission” seemed to give hope to the students left at the Academy and the group had been treated like heroes for the past week after Headmistress announced their mission at the weekly assembly. More than anything Astrid felt as if she was being pampered for her forthcoming death. So forgive her for not exactly being thrilled at their “going away” dinner. “You alright?” She glanced up to the soft voice from across the table. Abel. Perhaps the smartest boy she knew. Astrid suddenly felt a small wave of relief as she realized he was going with, they were going to need that brain of his. “Yeah, just not a big fan of… pork She said with an awkward smile in an attempt to not spill the nervous thoughts that racked her brain. A small wave of confusion wiped over Abel’s face before a small smile settled on it. As if he sensed that she didn’t really want to talk about it. Then again, who knows maybe he was just as terrified as she was.

Abel was. Terrified to say the absolute least. When Galarius approached him with the task he turned her down flat. There were better places for him to be than saving the world, the library for one. He was sure not meant to be on an elite force of demigods that was for sure. Abel couldn’t hold a sword like he could hold a pen and parchment. However, it was something that Galarius said that stuck with him for the next few days. Eating away at his conscious. “Graham, there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be”. Damnit. He wasn’t a warrior, he was a scholar. But. What if they had hieroglyphs they couldn’t read? A monster they didn’t know how to kill? Some live-saving mathematical equation? Which they probably wouldn’t but still. He could solve it. So here he was, sitting at the table surrounded by warriors, a qualified team that he definitely didn’t belong to. Thankfully, Headmistress took the stand and distracted him from his thoughts as he focused in as the noise in the mess hall died down. “Students, as you know tonight we say goodbye and goodluck to our best students and our bravest heroes. May you be victorious in your journey and find that you cannot complete these tasks alone, that you will need to share each others strengths to succeed. Καλὴ τύχη!” The students raised their glass repeating back the greek phrase for good luck, Καλὴ τύχη. It was then that the windows in the mess hall simultaneously exploded and all hell broke loose.

It was really no surprise that Ophelia was skipping out on their last dinner before they were to take off. Their last hurrah if you will. She wasn't the jolly type, and stuffing her face until she had to undo the top button on her jeans like some of her peers wasn't high on her list of priorities.

After Astrid had convinced the headmistress it hadn't taken her very long to get around to asking Ophelia to join the team. Regardless of her close friendship with Astrid, Ophelia knew she was a natural choice, with her capabilities and knowledge she would be a great asset to the team. And she accepted the invite easily, she wouldn't leave something as important as their mission to her ignorant peers.

Which is why while everyone was down the corridor being merry, Ophelia was reading through heavy, dusty tombs in the quiet library, hoping to gain one last piece of useful knowledge. However, Etienne her skeletal cat, had started to stir and the ruckus from het mess hall was beginning to deter her from her study. So, with an exaggerated sigh, she flipped the last book closed, tucked it into the returns trolley and headed to the mess hall. She had after all promised Astrid that she would attend.

She slipped through the large doors at the end just as the crowd broke out in the traditional chorus of Καλὴ τύχη. In case you were wondering, Ophelia didn't join in the chant, she merely muttered to herself, "Oui."

Then there was a crashing sound. Large ornate windows ringed the mess hall impressive height and grandeur, and all at once they shattered inward. For a moment Ophelia just gazed skyward as all the tiny shards of glass seemed to hang beautifully, then the feral beasts descended from the sky, following the glass. She recognised them instantly as Harpies but her body couldn't keep up with her brain, as one of the harpies descended straight towards her. It's meaty talons griping Ophelia's bicep, ripping through her t-shirt and skin.

Ophelia was a reader, not a fighter, so she was woefully under equipped to physically fight such a beast. She reached for the nearest table blindly groping for whatever was closest, her fingers snatching up a butter knife. Without thinking, she plunged it straight into the leg of the harpy attached to her. Causing the monster to shriek, releasing her and giving her enough time to duck away, she begun weaving her way through the chaos the mess hall had turned into, heading straight for the long table up the front, where Astrid and the other's had been seated.

She ducked into cover next to the blonde that moment she spotted her, letting out a French curse. "C’est vraiment des conneries!" This is really bullshit. It felt good even if no one would understand her words, and the fact that they slipped out in French revealed how strongly she felt about the situation. Ophelia swiped a hand over the blood rolling down her arm before turning to Astrid, her words directed at her friend this time. "Flight. They're weak against flight." She was racking her brain for any information she knew about harpies and that was all she could come up with. Astrid would know what to do with that information.

Jem was enjoying himself. Laughing with friends, stuffing his face with food, and far too naïve to worry about what comes tomorrow. The Headmistress had asked him ot join the group heading out, not many people thought he'd be much help but he was the oldest student and Icarus Academy and probably the biggest.

Of course. he'd gotten himself distracted and ended up halfway down the mess hall joking around with some guys he took math with. With a few slaps on the back, Jem headed back to his empty seat, at the front of the room, up next to Able. He slung his arm around the smaller boy's next. "Not long now bud!" He said giving Able's hair a solid ruffle before releasing him to dig into the food.

He had his plate stacked high with food when Headmistress Galarius called for the attention, but added his own loud voice to the rally of "Καλὴ τύχη" that rose around the room. Adding a few solid thumps on the table for emphasis. The everything exploded, shards of glass flying around his ears and screams crying out from every direction. It was absolute chaos.

Jem heard a horrible squalling sound from above and when looked upward he saw horrible, grotesque, flying beasts. Like nothing he'd ever seen before, they for one awful moment hovered above. Then all at once they descended on the mass of students. Jem jumped out of his chair, toppling it as he did.

He watched as one of the horrible things focussed in on Astrid a few metres down from him. It swooped down the blonde girl, talons extended. Jem did the only thing he could think of, drawing on his powers he summoned a flower to bloom inside of the flying beast's mouth. It worked somewhat the of thing paused it's attack, it's half bird, half human face scrunching up before it spat out a crumpled blue mess.

Jem's eyes locked on the slobbery mess that landed on what had been his plate of food. A soggy, blue carnation. He'd been trying to conjure a yellow daffodil that would knock the beast out. When he finally raised his eyes, he saw that the monster had changed targets and was now beating it's wings and charging at him.

Gwendolyn sat poised at the head of the table quieter than her normal self. The girl with confidence like reinforced steel wasn't used to faltering. Not even her strawberry salad - a favorite - relieved the nerves of her stomach. She could just hear her mother now, Good gods girl - get that nasty look off your face you're going to give yourself wrinkles. Gwen wasn't used to not fitting in, and she imagined her face was red with embarrassment watching the others converse amongst themselves. Why of all people had Headmistress asked her to join? What good would a child of Venus be on a demigod-saving mission? She could just sense the ridicule now. In all honestly Gwen wasn't entirely sure as to why she ended up agreeing in the first place. Maybe curiosity, or maybe she couldn't bear to see Jeremiah do this without her. He was one of the few at the Academy that didn't resent her existence. If anything she just wanted to prove herself, that she truly just wasn't a pretty face. But the longer she sat at the table the more she began to wonder if it was true.

Headmistress's speech was nothing more than a blur and Gwen found herself mumbling "Καλὴ τύχη" along with the rest of her classmates. That was until her shrill scream filled the air as the room practically exploded. She instantly ducked beneath the table gripping the leg of the table with all her might. Gwen squeezed her eyes shut as the sound of screams and horrible squawks filled the air. It was nothing less than a nightmare.

What was she doing? Cowering underneath the table like a first year. The girl would clearly be no help to anyone if she acted like a frightened mouse every time they faced danger. Still, her fear crippled her and it took all her might to peek out from under the table to see the disaster up above. Harpies. Hideous creatures. Even if she dozed off for the majority of her Monstrology class she'd recognize the ugly, oversized chickens anywhere.

Her eyes focused back to the table in front of her and she just caught a rather large Harpy spitting out a crumpled blue mess of what she once assumed were lovely hyacinths. Jem. She would've whooped to congratulate her friend on besting the creature (Jem and her related on the fact that children of goddesses of flowers and beauty weren't known for their combat prowess) only to realize that this instead made him the bird's target. The ugly thing reared its feathers and charged at him and Gwendolyn only had a few moments to react.

She picked up the nearest thing she could, the plate holding her dearest strawberry salad and chucked it at the Harpy like her life depended on it. "Eat this bird-brain!" She really needed to work on her insults. Surprisingly enough, the plate landed its target perfectly smashing into the face of the Harpy who happened to glance in her direction at just the perfect time. Unfortunately for Gwen, she just started perhaps the most frightening game of 'Tag you're It'. The bird shook its head out of daze and charged down the table in her direction. She screamed, tumbling back in her seat holding her hands up in front of her face - if she was going to get mauled by a freaky Big Bird she might as well try and save her face. The Harpy finally reached the edge of the table and leered at her, rearing back an ugly claw ready to rip her to shreds. As it brought down it's claw she clenched her eyes shut, and screamed again - both out of fright and out of a last ditch effort. "Stop!"

Gwendolyn waited. And waited. But the claw never came down. And after she finally had the nerve to slowly open her eyes she was shocked to see the Harpy - completely frozen in place. It took only a few moments to realize what she had done. Gwendolyn had charmspoke her way out of near death.

Monty was still packing. Not clothes - supplies. Medicine, sutures, his lovely stethoscope given to him by his father, and more medicine. When Astrid approached him asking for help there was no question as to why. She knew that there was a great probability of one of them getting hurt and better him there then no-one. He would be lying to himself if he said he wasn't a little bit grateful Astrid had approached him with the offer. Senior year dawning on him had become quiet nerve-racking. Icarus was his home, and had been for the last few years and without it - what was he? The most probable thing for him to do would be to go to Medical School like his mother. While that seemed like the most obvious answer to his future he still couldn't help but feel unsure. Isn't that what he wanted to do with his life?

His thoughts of the future were abruptly brought to an end however when what he assumed was an explosion came from the mess hall. He scrambled to his feet grabbing his bo staff from his closet. It was no secret that Monty was plain terrible at combat, but in the last few months he had been working on some self-defense training with Astrid. The girl was nice enough to offer him help and not to mention she was a terrific sparring partner.

Staff in hand he dashed out of his room and down the long hallway that led from the dormitories to the student lounge then to the Mess Hall. And a mess it was. The second he opened the door to the large space he had to duck down to avoid the claws of - of a harpy? It only took him a few moments to assess the situation at hand, they were under attack. The dreaded demigod curse had finally reached Icarus.

Monty wasted no time in helping as he reached for a cowering student using a chair to shield herself from the ongoing attack. She had a nasty gash in her cheek and Montgomery assumed it had come from the claw of a Harpy. Laceration to the left cheek, heart rate 120, blood pressure 122/74. It was as if a chart had slowly begun to write itself in his mind. He crouched down next to the scared student her eyes wide as saucers, she must've been no older than a second year, and placed a hand over hers. "Hey, listen I'm going to help you okay? I just need you to stay still and take deep breaths with me alright?" He said as calmly as possible amidst the chaos going on around them. His mother would always tell him a distressed patient was never good for the healing process. She nodded slowly and followed his instructions trying to level out her breathing. Montgomery gave her a reassuring smile and after a moment squeezed her hand and closed his eyes. Healing others was always the strangest sensation, and never pleasant. He gritted his teeth as he felt his cheek slowly tear open - mimicking the girls wound. When he finally opened his eyes aside from the girls shocked expression he was grateful to see her cheek was no completely free of any marks or cuts, save for some dried blood where the gash was. He didn't have time to explain to her what had occurred and when he told her to go back to her room she stared at him for a few moments before dashing out the door of the mess hall.

Montgomery could already feel the cut on his cheek begin to heal as he turned back to the chaos around him. He noticed the others (their rag-tag group of heroes) at the table in the front of the Mess Hall battling a particular nasty group of Harpies. He dashed across the room, ducking and dodging the awaiting claws of the monsters sliding into place near Astrid and Ophelia. Not even sparing a greeting his eyes fell to the gash along Ophelia's shoulder and arm. "Ophelia, one got you pretty good didn't they? Let me help" He said extending out his arm for her to take.

The skyline was a wonderful mixture of colours as the setting sun started its final decent beyond the horizon. Kari often came up towards the higher point of the camp where the cliffs edge provided one of the better views at both sunset and sunrise, where she could at least watch her mother leading the great sun across the sky and beyond it. This evening as always, she sits cross-legged on a cluster of rocks, relaxed in a moment of contemplation in an attempt to feel closer with her mother. But today the ritual gives her no comfort, for her mother is silent. As silent as the cold moon since the attacks began, and her light no longer brings the warmth it once did, which is both a blessing and a curse. Tomorrow the oldest, and perhaps most foolish of the gods children depart in search of their wayward parents. To find answers to the perils that assail their peers elsewhere in the world, a task that fills Kari with dread for there is a bitter chill in the air though she doubts that snow is due quite yet for the time of year. Still it sparks within her memory a warning that the end begins with death and blood for the gods, and the ash of that first murder shall cover the world in a blanket of snow to herald its coming.

She sighed and half chuckled, half chided herself for giving into such stories as she’s done almost every year in the autumn for fear that this time the snow brings with it the end times. And in turn she is always filled with relief; and indeed as it always does the world continues to turn unabated and unchanged. Pushing herself to her feet she pulls her fur lined coat close about her, not so much to ward away the cold but to help cool her skin in shadow as she already feels it starting to warm in the presence of light. The ripple of goosebumps across her arms caused her to shiver for a moment as she turns from the beauty of the sky, whose shade is now boiling away from a bright orange into a pale purple. She glances down towards the central mess hall where light is spilling out into the darkening avenues of the camp, and began the climb down from her secluded perch. Her tongue stuck out slightly as she licked her lips in anticipation she gently snapped her fingers together to create a spark of light which danced across her hand to illuminate the path.

The clouds above were starting to fade to darkness as Kari made her descent while the mixed sounds of her peers was becoming more audible with each passing moment, though for a moment she thought she’d caught a glimpse of other shadows in the sky. Winged shapes, perhaps that darted at the corner of her vision. There was a faint melody just beyond hearing that felt strange to her, almost causing her to pause mid-step before she felt her feet begin to meander away from the well-lit hall and down one of the darker side-streets. She could feel a faint panic beginning to build in the depths of her chest as she realised she wasn’t controlling her feet anymore; her arm having fallen limply by her side as its light was snuffed out. The music to which she was now following was becoming louder yet, somewhere behind her the raised voices of the other Demigods sounded out clear in the night. “Καλὴ τύχη”

Rounding a corner she saw further into the darkness up ahead a monster that seemed a grotesque mockery of a human female that reared up on its birdlike legs with feathered wings. The faintly lyrical music that poured forth from its dripping lips felt ill at odds with the monster singing its siren call. The creature beckoned towards Kari with its clawed hands, reaching towards her tender flesh as its mouth curved into a vicious smile of triumph. The fight that had been bouncing around inside her mind as she walked unbidden towards this beast had finally reached a crescendo as instead of moving close she staggered backwards, her eyes wide as she gasped in horror. The vile temptress’ smile suddenly twisted into a snarl as she lunged towards the stunned teenager, having realised her song was no longer effective. Inhaling sharply as she turned towards the wall of the nearest building she narrowly dodged being eviscerated by the creature though she both heard and felt the rip of fabric across her coat as it tugged her backwards before the threads snapped. Breathing out slowly, she focused on calming herself as her skin began to glow in the darkness and her fingers warmed to the touch. Time seemed to slow for her as she lifted her hands towards the Harpy as it twisted in the air to come back towards its prey. Her hands were stretched out as the flames grew between them before surging forwards, leaving only a soot outline on the opposite wall where the creature had hovered. As soon as the flames vanished it felt like time rushing back into the moment, her breath came in sharp, sudden gasps as adrenaline kicked into overdrive and mixed her panic into a frenzy. Gulping down lung-fulls of air she began muttering to herself, a mixture of mantras and quotes that bubbled up in her mind in an attempt to regain some composure. Even though she was still shaking and feeling quite on the edge of panic she pulled herself into the air, feeling the cool breeze against her face as she rose upwards on the current.

As she soared through the air she had half closed her eyes as she savoured the exhilaration of flying, and it wasn’t until she collided with a screeching harpy that she remembered what an utterly terrible idea that had been. Balling her fists tightly she extruded waves of intense heat in waves away from her body as the pair of them tumbled through one of the now shattered windows into the main hall. In her moment of panic she had heavily over compensated and her momentum had greatly increased so by then she was a rapidly advancing fireball in whose orbit her initial target had already melted. Her arms and legs were scrabbling for purchase in the middle of air which was already boiling away, not that it would have afforded much resistance to her descent until she could propel herself in another direction. As her fireball cannoned across the room she caught a brief moment of Jeremiah’s shocked expression before sailing straight past the harpy that had been charging towards him, and completely missing it; though the searing heat may have taken along a little of Jem’s now signed facial hair and eyebrows.. Thankfully this had already been dealt with by Gwendolyn and was now frozen otherwise it would have been even more ironic given the destructive potential of her entrance. Her momentum was finally slowed as she crashed into the corner of the room in a tangled heap of furniture and the remains of between two and three harpies which despite having been burned to a crisp, smelled like the bog of eternal stench made manifest and then char-grilled.

Kari was overall feeling fairly dazed and a little unsteady on her feet as she climbed upright, doing her best to put out the fires which were even now spreading out from her impact. Gingerly as she was feeling somewhat brused if thankfully not singed or burned she began by wrapping herself again with her coat as she edged towards where Astrid and the others appeared to be holding their own. And while she’d managed to fend off a few herself the strain was already taking its toll, especially with the sun having now completely set.

”Where did these vile creatures come from? And who sent them?” While her query was partially rhetorical as well as a general one if any of them could answer it she did glance at those of Greek or Roman parentage in hopes that they might know more. ”At least these one’s aren’t singing…” She shuddered at the thought of having fallen under the sway of these things, if even only for a moment.
