        A S P E C T U S
        5"6 | Dark Brown | Brunette/Brown

La Verne has never really thought of herself as "pretty". She has always liked to look at others and admire their own beauty, whether on the inside or outside. But, she isn't horrible looking either. Her fair skin compliments her chocolate eyes, and her long brunette hair frames her box-shaped face. She has a feminine and curved figure, although it's often hidden by sweaters, hoodies, etc. Many people have complimented La Verne on her looks, but she's never taken such kind words to heart.

She doesn't exactly have a certain style. She usually throws on warm colored sweaters over some jeans and some boots. La Verne isn't very interested in making a fashion statement, but she does make sure she doesn't go in public looking horrifying. Rosetta always lectures her about her wardrobe, while La Verne totally ignores her and paints blank canvases. She has dyed her hair a couple of times, her current style being shoulder-length and light purple. Rose still scolds her about her apparently 'reckless' fashion choice.

        P E R S O N A
        candid | stolid | pensive | taciturn

Truth; something La Verne cares for. She doesn't entertain empty lies and fabrications for the sake of someone's feelings. People describe her rare statements as candid, simply put. Many don't appreciate this though, calling her inconsiderate and rude when her truth is especially hurtful. La Verne brushes those insults off, on the other hand. She really doesn't care if she's being mean to you or not whenever she does speak; just as long as she's being true to her feelings. So don't expect to get want you want out of her if it's not what she believes herself, or anything, for that matter.

One trait that drives people away from La Verne is the fact that she's utterly emotionless. Not fully; she is an expert at hiding what she feels unless she says something about it. Take one glance at her face, and it's like you see nothing at all. Just.. blank. You could call her exterior quite stolid. Her unexcitedness and dullness hasn't earned her much company in her lifetime, but she tries to smile and laugh for her own mental health, though as hard as she tries, she can't get a single smirk to appear. The only good thing about this is the fact that in distressing situations, she's nice and calm, and she'll use her brain to solve the situation instead of freaking out and trying to figure out what to do.

La Verne always seems to be in deep thought. She likes to observe, and analyze the people and places around her. Also find a good place to snap a photo. But, she looks as if she's daydreaming quite often. Thinking is one of her strong suits, and this attitude of hers is more often than not pensive. Her solemness and thoughtful state helps her immensely when in a difficult and stressing situation. La Verne believes using her brain will take her places; so she uses it at all times. Staying serious and calm is important to her.

Something else you'll notice is that she is softspoken, subtly mentioned before. Her social awkwardness makes her quiet, and untalkative. This side of her prevents her from saying what she thinks; acting quite taciturn or reticent. It's one part of herself that La Verne dislikes very much. Although she has a lot to say, she just doesn't communicate very much. Nobody ever really liked her when she was a child, so she did not speak often. Some would argue that she is mute, but she would like to talk; La Verne just doesn't feel comfortable interacting with people she isn't close with.

CREATIVE..Her creativity exceeds her. She looks at the world around her
like she would a blank canvas just waiting to be splashed in color; endless ideas.

JUDGEMENT..She looks at a situation from every possible point of view and
uses critical thinking to decide what's right to do. She's dependable and reliable.

CLEVER..She solves problems in efficient ways. Her ideas
are smart and able to get the job done without doing too much damage.

INTROVERTED..She keeps to herself, unwilling to communicate
with strangers. It's out of her comfort zone, but she will if she has to.

CONCEAL..She doesn't show emotion, or what she's feeling. The one
thing she isn't honest about is what she really has bottled up inside.

AWKWARD..She certainly doesn't have the upper hand when it
comes to socializing. She just doesn't know how to keep a conversation.

        A C T U M .T E M P U S

La Verne Blaise Caron was born in Calais, France to Waltier Caron, a history professor, and ballet dancer Giselle Fleur André. Giselle's pregnancy was unexpected, but that didn't prevent La Verne's parents from loving her, in fact, it made them love her more. From a young age, very much was expected of La Verne. Her parents had high standards, and urged her to try her hardest to be the best. She never liked being coddled with expectations that way, but still did her best at all things she was introduced to.

Her schedule was constantly filled with extracurricular activities and advanced classes to increase her academic criteria. Things like ballet, piano, and other activities were practiced day and night. One afternoon when she was out with her mother, she suddenly said something in another language. She told Giselle she had no idea what she was saying, yet she spoke it quite fluently in that moment. But, as soon as she stopped, she couldn't speak it anymore. Her parents recognized it as Arabic, and were so inspired that they decided to hire someone to teach her to speak the foreign language properly. La Verne was happy her parents were proud of her, but she still carried that weight of great expectations on her shoulders. Still, she stayed cheerful and put a smile on her face despite the immense stress she was feeling that was abnormal for a child her age.

Over time, La Verne grew tired of having to do so many things in the short span of 24 hours. She wanted to be free of the responsibilities forced upon her. So, she began to find her own talent in art. Whenever she had free time, she would paint the scenery around her. It was the one thing that allowed her to let her creative juices actually break free. But, as she spent less time with her parents, and had nobody to be her company, she grew lonely cold, and distant towards humanity. Despite the fact that her personality changed significantly, her paintings still held vibrant colors and feelings. It was the only sense of emotion she really had left.

La Verne grew up homeschooled, and continued to be quiet and sheltered. But, as she became a freshman in highschool, her parents enrolled her in a private school for all girls. Still, she refused to speak to anyone and was always alone. Yet, a girl named Rosetta Lisette Bellamy was determined to become her friend. Surprisingly, La Verne eventually grew into a friendship with her. Finally she had at least one person to be around. Rosetta made sure to make her highschool years calm and comfortable.

Her years in highschool passed by quickly, with Rose right by her side. Before she knew it, they were both off to college. Being an art major, she would draw and paint everything around her. She also picked up photography as a hobby. Once they graduated, La Verne and Rosetta moved to Tokyo; for the beautiful sights and inspiring wonders. Now, La Verne shares an apartment with Rosetta, and works as a professional artist, selling her paintings to many people around the world, and taking photos in her spare time.

CHAPTER ONE: THE BEGINNING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Date: Evening, 1st April, 2017
Location: Tokyo City, Japan
━━━━━━━━━

xxxOnce, before Tokyo had been given its name, before tall spires of metal dominated the horizon and light polluted the sky, one could see the stars. They say it was the gods who wove constellations into the otherwise blank expanse of night sky; exposing pinpricks of light to tell stories of legends that would transcend time. Yet, as civilisation grew ever skywards, electric lights began to drown out the natural illumination of the night sky. There are still those who remember centuries long gone, whose gaze at the night sky and remember a time when it was only clouds that interrupted their view. The constellations had changed since they were young, shifting across the Earth’s sky as time flowed forward. Yet, more than one could still take comfort in the beauty of it.

xxx “A shame really.” The man commented absently, his gaze fixed upwards, past the canopy of sky-scrapers towards the sliver of cloudless ink visible above. “Once you could have made out millions of stars from anywhere in the prefecture.”

xxxThe surly teenager seated beside him grunted and shifted slightly away, unsure who this stranger was and why he had randomly started talking to him.

xxx “I made it, you know.” The man continued, an almost smug smile on his face as he leaned against the park bench. He didn’t seem to care that the youth was resolutely staring at the screen of his cell phone, attempting to tune out the rambling stranger. “I mean, I made everything really. You’re welcome by the way.” He paused and glanced at the mortal, as if expecting a ‘thank you’, or any other form of gratitude. When none was offered the man merely continued talking, “But, I am particularly proud of the stars. ”

xxxThe man’s dark eyes returned to the small portion of the sky not covered in thick cloud. He held his hand in front of his eyes, stretched out as if he might pluck the very stars from their homes in the sky. Instead, he waved his hand slowly from side to side, as if waving away a particularly bad smell. A satisfied smile lit his face as his hand fell to his side,

xxx “There, you see!” The man said, nodding towards the now cloudless sky. Though the light from numerous skyscrapers still dimmed the brightest of the stars, they seemed stronger now, shimmering happily above the world below. “Much better.”

xxxThe youth merely grunted again, his hands fiddling headphones into his ears as he attempted to tune out the well-dressed man beside him. Unfortunately, the man’s voice continued to blare through the headphones, as if the younger man’s music wasn’t playing at all.

xxx “I fancy myself as a bit of an artist, if I’m being frank.” He continued, a note of pride creeping into his words, “You see that tree there? I designed it, right down to the edges on the leaves.”

xxxThe teenager didn’t even glance up, too busy checking that he had plugged his headphones in properly. Of all the nights for them to stop working, it had to be when he was getting his ear talked off by some mental stranger.

xxxFrom behind the pair a female voice replied, full of barely contained impatience, “I think you’ll find that I was the one to design that tree. If I remember correctly, you were still babbling on about how sludge was going to be the next big thing.” The woman snorted in amusement. “Well, we all know how that went.”

xxx “Excuse me for trying to do something different.” He retorted hotly, even as he slid across the park bench to make space for the new arrival. Beside him, the irritated youth was silently cursing the two adults who had interrupted his brooding and was quickly stuffing his phone into his backpack. Without a word the kid stood, pulled his hood tightly over his head, and walked away.

xxxThe two gods barely seemed to register the departure, more concerned with the back and forth that had begun. “I make one mistake and you never let me forget it. I made flowers, and gave the world bees. Who doesn’t like bees?” His hands made exaggerated movements in the air.

xxx “One mistake? Oh, I can count at least three dozen you’ve made in the last decade alone.” The female retorted, slapping his hands casually away. She opened her mouth to continue, before changing her mind and instead adding, “But I didn’t come to bicker with you.”

xxxHe nodded. His partner had come for the same reason he had. He stood up slowly, stretching out his tall frame, before offering a hand to the woman. She took it with a nod, her head tilting slightly in a wordless expression of ‘after you’.

xxxA second later the two figures blinked into existence on the wind-swept top of a sky-scraper. From here they could see the city sprawled out below them; neon, artificial lights marking roads, shop advertisements, and the lit windows of residential apartments. Above them, cleared of the thick layer of clouds, was the night’s blanket of stars.

xxxThough no eyes – mortal or otherwise – happened to glance up at the tip of the building, had someone done so, they would have seen two immortals bathed in moonlight, watching their world with a confidence only the gods know. They were one and the same, and yet separate, two entities burning in a universe of their creation.

xxxHe was tall and pale, his feet rooted solidly in the ground beneath him even while his hands reached heavenward. His cheekbones were chiselled from marble, sharp enough to cut mountains. Dark eyes of endless knowledge inspected his world, while strands of hair the same pitch black were pushed back from his face with lithe fingers. His appearance was similar to natives of this land, albeit almost concentrated, as if he were the original that all others had been moulded by.

xxxShe, on the other hand, had the dark, warm skin of someone who would have been marked a foreigner had she walked amongst Tokyo’s population. Her face was softer; a smooth sculpture of beauty, with thick curls of coal-coloured hair engulfing her head. Pupils that whispered of eons gone by watched the city like a predator of old, her lips held tight in a thin frown as possibilities of the days to come ran through her mind.

xxx “Owari” He spoke her name like a resolution; a finality echoing from his lips; the end.

xxx “Hajimari.” She responded with his name; a beginning; a taste of fresh possibilities, and boundless growth.

xxx “Things are moving.” He stated, his eyes too seeing beyond the crawling traffic below. “Do you think they’re ready?”

xxx “They’ll have to be.” Owari responded, her tone firm.

xxxHajimari nodded, rising his gaze from the streets at his feet to the stars above. His hand rose, fingers splayed above his head as his eyes searched between the digits. “Perhaps a sign then.” He murmured, almost to himself. Though, Owari heard and followed her partner’s gaze to the heavens.

xxx “Many have long since forgotten us.” She reminded him as his fingers began to dance overhead. His hand made a graceful pulling motion, a soft breath left his lips, and then the first star fell across the night’s sky; a streak of pure light momentarily illuminating the heavens. More followed, creating a meteor shower for any who happened to turn their attention to the sky that night.

xxx “Well, perhaps this is for my comfort than.” Hajimari replied, his hands clasped behind his back as he admired his work. Owari let the silence build as she too watched the show above, until a dozen moments had passed.

xxx “They all have demons to face.” Her words rang with a hint of pity, for she knew the dangers that were to come.

xxx “Most are of their own making.” Hakimari responded, “They would have had to face them eventually.”

xxxOwari nodded, her curls shifting as if stirred by a gentle wind, “We can only watch now.”

xxxA look of slight guilt crossed the pale god’s face, his eyes flashing momentarily. His partner turned ever-perceptive eyes on him, her frown deepening as she sensed his intentions, “Hajimari, if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times, stop interfering with their lives!”

xxxAnd just like that, the aura of power and mystery that surrounded the two gods evaporated. Like an old couple, married for too long and all too aware of each other’s faults, they began trading words; barbs, insults, passive aggressive suggestions. A bird soaring above would be wise to avoid the area directly around the snapping deities, a rat might have taken sheltered in a solid pipe well below the pair too. For the less perceptive mortals, they continued their work without contemplating that above them stood two squabbling gods, or that among their number roamed immortals and ghosts. Even as the two gods disappeared, the only witness to their presence a pouting teenage boy, the world continued to move of its own accord.

xxxIn a shoe-box apartment only a few blocks from the building once occupied by the two gods, a Guardian Angel calling himself Kohaku was preparing to leave on work-related business. A short distance further, within the performance hall of one of Tokyo’s learning institutes, a blonde boy studying music gave his hands a shake as he glared at a piano piece. And further away, across vast oceans and mountain ranges carved and painted by the hands of the divines, a goblin’s hand reached for a door knob. Slim fingers curled around the brass head, her eyes shut, mind searching for the pull of her next destination. She opened the door and slid through, her eyes alighting on the clear windows of her Tokyo apartment to see stars decorating the sky.

xxxCrisp, night air filled La Verne's lungs. The faint glow from the street lights lit the sidewalk; leading them to their destination, quietly. Rosetta strolled beside her, engrossed in the wondrous, starry sky above. "You know, I never understood why you wanted to take a photo of the stars so much," Rose looked back at La Verne, a warm smile on her face. "But now I do. They're breathtaking. You'd want to keep something like this forever." La Verne gazed upward, the stars shining back at her. "I wanted to see a meteor shower. I've never seen one before." Rose chuckled.

xxxThe park around them was empty; the only signs of life being the two young women side by side. Most were out and about in the city, minding their own business. Earlier, Rosetta had insisted that they go out somewhere for La Verne's early birthday present. La Verne refused and told her she wanted to walk to the park so she could take pictures of the stars. Hesitantly, Rose had agreed. "Oh, fine. It's for you, anyways." She remembered Rose say. She fiddled with the black straps around her neck, which held her camera close to her body. She had been itching for this for the entire day, longing to capture a star falling in the sky, like a raindrop. The idea itself was exciting, to say the least. The image plagued her mind, making her impatient.

xxx"Slow down, would ya?" La Verne whipped her head back to Rosetta, not realizing her increase in speed. She stopped for a moment, letting her catch up. Rose huffed and smirked. "You sure seem anxious for something as small as this. Eh, Blaise?" La Verne 'hmmed' in response, resuming their walk. It was quiet, a comforting silence that settled around them. She thought back to a time when her mother took her stargazing, and they surveyed the sky wordlessly. She remembered asking, "Do stars disappear when they die?" Her mother stroked her head and smiled. "Well, I'm not sure. But I like to believe that when one star dies, it is reborn. It comes back bigger and brighter than before." Back then, La Verne didn't believe her, but she did now. A sudden familiar ringtone shattered the reticence, interrupting her thoughts.

xxxShe looked down at her hoodie pocket, taking her phone out. She felt it buzz in the palm of her hand, ringing a continuous tune. The caller ID read, "Maman". La Verne glanced at Rosetta. Rose waved her off. "Go ahead. It must be important. I'll be waiting where we originally were going." La Verne stood, unmoving. "Shoo! Shoo!" Rose lightly shoved her in the opposite direction. She smiled as she walked off, leaving the quiet girl alone. La Verne hurriedly accepted the call before the last ring. Putting the device up to her ear, she put her free hand in her pocket. "Bonjour? Maman?" The language nearly felt foreign to her. Having not spoken French for awhile, her accent was slowly wearing off. It was still there, though. It would take a long time for it to disappear. A soft, feminine voice spoke on the other line. "La Verne! My angel. I have been trying to call you! I wanted to tell you something very important." Important? La Verne thought.

xxx"What is it, maman?" She could almost hear her mother smiling giddily. "Your father and I will be visiting you for your birthday! Isn't that exciting?" She sighed. "Will you even have enough time to pack, fly here, then unpack before my birthday?" Her mother laughed abruptly, almost startling La Verne so much that she almost dropped her phone. "Oh, yes! In fact, we'll be landing in about 3 hours. We're already packed and on a plane, headed for Japan!" La Verne face-palmed with her free hand. "Why didn't you tell me your plans earlier, maman? You know I hate surprises." She couldn't believe her parents would be so reckless as to catch a flight to come where she lived- without her consent.

xxx"We wanted to surprise you! Also, I haven't seen dear Rosetta in such a long time." Once again, she sighed heavily, almost groaning. "Fine, maman. I'll deal with your plans and see you here soon. I have to go, though. I don't want to miss the meteor shower tonight. À plus, maman." She heard her mother hum before saying, "Alright. À plus tard, my angel." La Verne lowered her phone, pressing the 'End Call' button with her finger. She pulled down her beanie some more, moving a lilac strand out of her face before walking to where she was headed to before.

xxxLa Verne saw Rosetta laying in a patch of grass, watching the stars above them. She moved to sit beside her, following Rose's gaze. Suddenly, a streak had painted the night sky. "Looks like you made it on time, Blaise. Just in time." Rose sighed joyfully. La Verne blinked as more lights streaked the sky; painting it a bright, mesmerizing spectrum of white and soft yellow. She took her camera from around her neck and snapped a photo. The beautiful sight gave her a light feeling inside for some reason. She knew this picture would be one that would last for many years to come.
