Introduction

A small group of individuals living in the heart of one of America's busiest cities finds a lucrative and exciting business. Assessing each case individually, the extraction team negotiates prices and logistics with clients who want something that can only be obtained through one means: entering the dreams of certain targets through use of the PASIV dream machine. Though they know their mode of employment is unconventional, what the team does not know is just what, precisely, awaits for them as part of the underground extraction scene.

The Big Picture

Someone has been hunting down extractor teams and putting them out of commission. No one knows who or why, but talented teams are vanishing never to be heard from again. Our team will be commissioned to discover the culprit(s) behind this, and will have to utilize extraction techniques never before attempted. Gathering information from someone's mind is one thing, but what about brainwashing a person? Or removing someone's memory altogether? All the stops must be pulled in order to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The jist (Inception in a nutshell for those new to the fandom):

This roleplay is based on the movie Inception, but will utilize original characters rather than those from the movie. Inception, in a nutshell for those who have not seen the film, is about a team of people who use a machine developed by the government to invade the dreams of others. The machine, called the PASIV, was originally cooked up by the US military so soldiers could get into dream combat situations with one another as a way to prepare themselves for the reality of war. From there the machines leaked out to be used by other, smaller teams for different purposes.

The sleeping target (called the mark or the dreamer) is hooked up to the PASIV, as are the extractors who will be invading the mark's dreams. Usually a sedative is administered to keep the mark and extractors asleep. From there the team works together to achieve their ends, which can be any number of things:

Some teams specialize in intel-gathering for the highest bidder (like Leo Dicaprio’s team in the movie) but others focus on different things. Some extractors provide perfect dreams for trusted customers (think Total Recall; pay the right amount and they will make whatever dream you want for a certain number of nights). Some do dream therapy for people, digging up repressed memories and helping the dreamer deal with them. Some are sort of dream "call-girls" and offer dreams of an X-rated nature to those willing to pay. (These are just some examples off the top of my head. As always things remain PG-13 in the RP itself.)

It's all about delicately creating a dream world and dream characters for the mark to interact with so they won't even realize the extractor team is there. Information can be gathered from the dreamer in a number of different ways (threatening, coercing, seducing, what have you.) It gets dangerous if the mark begins to sense that there are invaders in his/her mind, for then their subconscious will start to mobilize and attack, wanting to oust the foreign bodies.

The roles:

Extractor(s): Extractors are sort of the "door-kickers" of the team. They usually interact directly with the dreamer, and are the best at actually getting the information they want from said person. Often times they are the in-dream leaders and decide when to end the dream or determine what to do if things go south.

Point Men/Women and Chemist(s): Point Men are the organized ones, making sure everything is in its right place at the right time. They sometimes stay "up top" during the dreams, making sure the mark doesn't wake up mid-way, administering the proper sedatives at the right times, and ensuring their work is not interrupted by an outside person. If they accompany the team into the dream, they work with the Extractor and coordinate the “kicks” to wake everyone up at the right time. In my version they are also majorly involved in the detective work, research, planning, and brainstorming of when and how to capture their mark for the extraction. I lumped Chemists in here too since otherwise the Chemist job description is too limited.

Architect(s): What it says on the tin. Architects plan out the dream world using information given to them from the Point Men and are responsible for sustaining the dream world while everyone sleeps. As a result most architects don't do a whole lot of "heavy lifting" in the dream itself when it comes to interacting with the dreamer, leaving that for the Extractors and Forgers. Some Architects feel it's easier to host the dreams in their own minds, giving them better control over their surroundings, but it is possible for an Architect to build the needed dreamscape even if someone else is hosting.

Forger(s): Forgers work closely with the Point Men, often doing their own independent research on people who are close to the mark/dreamer in real life. Imitating the people in question requires intense concentration and the ability to play any role. Forgers work exclusively on changing their own appearance (and, if they're talented, projecting certain other "characters" into the dreamscape with them) to interact with the mark/dreamer and gain their trust.

Character sheet:

Name
Age
Gender
Desired role in the team
Short description (physical and/or personality) just to get a gist. I don't need the full shebang for now--we can let that come out in RP.
Background: if you feel something should be shared that is relevant to the team (prior experience in dream-sharing/extraction, etc) feel free to put it here. But don't feel obligated.

Riley cracked her eyes open and sat up, running her hands ferociously through her short-cropped, dark hair. She groped out for her glasses on the bedside table and rolled off her bed, squinting through her broken blinds into the too-bright, white light of the winter morning outside.

Markus was likely still snoozing in the room next to hers, and Riley let him do so for a while longer as she slipped into her clothes for the next day. Black slacks and business socks on, she groped around and eventually located a red sleeveless turtleneck, forgetting to take her glasses off as she yanked it messily on over her head. Once she emerged from the article of clothing she took her glasses off, rubbed the bridge of her nose, then cleaned them on her shirt as she exited her room.

Their enormous, airy loft greeted her, and she smiled at the sight of it. It had cost a pretty penny to rent this, especially in the heart of the city, but it was worth it. Plus, after their last few missions they weren't exactly hard-up for cash. Riley wandered over to the kitchen, which was out in the open rather than a separate room, and started to cook up breakfast.

((To those who feel like joining: the loft is open to anyone who wants to live in it. It might be easier if our characters are room mates so they can discuss missions quickly.))

Paige's dark brown eyes fluttered open to her Brookstone gentle waking alarm system. The soothing yet energizing sounds of The Four Seasons (Le Quattro Stagioni) Opt 8-Concerto No. 2 for Violin and String Quartet started to play ever so quietly, steadily rising in volume. The light from her alarm clock steadily grew brighter as well, coaxing her out of her deep sleep. Its not fair to say Paige wasn't a 'morning person', she was actually quite fond of the mornings. However, she despised the waking process, the jarring experience of moving from one peacefulness to something...well not quite as peaceful, reality.

She allowed the song to play in its entirety, giving herself time to stretch and steady her mind for today's tasks. Once stretched and fairly certain she wasn't going to fall back asleep she stood and opened the shades to the over sized windows beside her bed. The morning light assaulted the darkness of the bedroom, along with Paige's eyes. She let out a hiss like a vampire in the night before darting off to the more gentle light of the bathroom stationed beside her room. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and other delicious breakfast material snapped her out of her foul disposition.

She had to hop to it if she wanted to make sure she got a fresh plate. A quick hot shower, another song of Merengue Electronico by Omega and it wasn't long before Paige was hopping down the stairs and into the kitchen, humming to the beat of the song. She snatched up the closest and freshest looking plate of food and seated herself on the counter.

"So, whats up, Doc?" She mumbled through chewing her food.
