The Mad Hatter

Real Name: Jervis Tetch

Height: 4'11"

Jervis Tetch stands at a measly 4'11", just barely above what the average is considered to be a Dwarf. Still that was of no comfort to the lad growing up, often teased for not only his size, but his rather large, buck teeth. Tetch possesses some long, glossy, blonde hair that looks wild and unkempt. His eyes are of a paleish blue-green, that's hard to stick out compared to his wild eyebrows. It is safe to say the Hatter has a wild-eye look to him, but after all he is mad. His head is shown to be a bit on the large side with a long chin that protrudes downward and the large ears.

Jervis's attire is about as flamboyant as they come. He wears a long, Victorian style overcoat, with the peculiar color of green. The coat is thought of to be velvet but might just be cloth or polyester. In either case it is accentuated with bright coloring on the suit flaps and the outlining. This mixed with a yellow, pinstripe, v-neck vest, purple riding gloves, a bright-blue bow tie, and the iconic green top hat, giving him the look of a circus ringleader. Though the ridiculousness of the outfit matches his personality through and through.

Personality: A strange and disturbing man, Jervis Tetch is a highly delusional psychopath. Now not to say he is on par with the more aggressive types of the Joker, Killer Croc, or even Scarecrow, his psychosis is more...odd. For the most part the Hatter presents himself as clueless and detached from reality. Often acting seemingly harmless as he is self-absorbed into his own little world. This is apparent by speaking with the loon, as he speaks in riddles and nonsensical babble. Stringing together words and sentences and pretending as if he makes perfect sense. Giggly and easily amused, the diminutive man acts like a child.

Although he acts childish and aloof, it isn't wise to underestimate him. Make no doubt, Jervis is incredibly dangerous and can be surprisingly strong and lash out quite violently when the mood takes him. Not to say Jervis suffers from mood swings, he's just capable of making an easy shift into rage. Besides acting goofy, Jervis is a sick minded individual. He likes to toy with people's minds in a pursuit to break their will, and have them accept they are living in a "Wonderland." He doesn't see human life as something precious, more like a gadget to tinker with. There is no point in life, it's all just randomness and Jervis believes this. Hence his fixation on the works of Lewis Carroll which is filled with absurdities.

Absurd is the key word to describe the Hatter. Plagued with various neurotics, it's hard to tell sometimes if Jervis is truly insane or faking it. This is called into question because of the level of intellect Jervis possesses. He is a brilliant neuro-scientist and technician, capable of creating hypnotic devices and psychedelic drugs, all in order to make the mind malleable. Before completely absorbing himself into his delusions, he had very little regard for humanity and the concept of free will. Believing that the mind is the weakest part of the human body. Despite being a nut case he does continue try and prove his theories correct, just in a more confusing and unorthodox way.

As mentioned Jervis has various neurotics, many of them hat related. He has an intense obsession with hats and head wear. Having an uncontrollable urge to find unique and interesting versions of this article of clothing. Even more strange is the Hatter's refusal to eat anything without a hat on it. This obsession likely stems from his father, who was the owner of a Hatter and Haberdashery, coupled with the Carroll character The Mad Hatter, who always wears a top hat. His intense love for hats is very deep, to the point that he claims he has headaches if he isn't wearing his beloved hat. He is also known to have an extreme attachment to the hat, even valuing it more so than human life. He also has an obsession with tea, as he always observes Afternoon Tea. Though he isn't limited to tea time, he drinks the beverage at any time of day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it's always tea. It is believed the Hatter has an addiction to tea, likely addicted to the caffeine found in tea. He drinks it to comfort him, and the worse he feels threatened, the more quickly he consumes the drink. His reaction towards tea is equatable to an alcoholic. It's a theory his headaches do not stem from the separation of his hat, but rather a withdrawal from not drinking tea. Then there comes his obsession with women, particularly blondes with blue eyes. This is because Alice is described as a blonde with blue eyes, the type of description Hatter seeks when abducting women. It is known he mentally tortures women, trying to rewire their brain into believing they're "Alice." Though the most persistent of all is the fascination with Lewis Carroll's books. Jervis truly believes he is the Mad Hatter and stages many of his crimes on these literary works.

Goals & Ambitions: It varies depending on what's running through the Hatter's mind at the time. He usually has no coherent pattern of thought and whatever seems good at the time, is what the Hatter acts upon. Despite the incongruity he does have a few consistent goals, which include finding "Alice", acquiring new hats, drinking teas, and of course living out his delusions.

Abilities & Equipment:
Neuroscience: Jervis has an incredible knowledge on how the Human Mind works. Able to easily map neuro-pathways and navigate them. This is why many of his mind controlling devices and psychoactive drugs are so effective. He knows which parts of the mind to target to make it the most easiest for him to control a human being.

Mad as a Hatter: Being highly delusional, Tetch is detached from the world. He has little regard for human life and is capable of committing heinous acts without much thought or remorse. This also helps give him a certain amount of resistance to pain, and access to a surprising amount of strength and viciousness if required.

Master Illusionist: Tetch is a master of crafting illusions. This is usually created through hypnotic control into taking his drugs. The level of his illusions can range from something minor like a deja vu effect to a complete reality change. He is also shown to have a degree of control over his illusions. He can plant simple hypnotic suggestions inside one's brain making them see things or compelling them to do things. On the other end, he can create an entire elaborate landscape, such as a twisted version of wonderland. It's very difficult when facing the Hatter to distinguish from what's real and what's not. And even more so to escape his control.

Paraphernalia:
Equipment: Mind Control Band hidden in his Hatband. Headgear such as masks that contain mind control tech, for which Tetch can remotely operate, making some unlucky sap into a real life puppet. Various Psychoactive Chemicals and Drugs known to induce intense and radical hallucinations. Various other mind control technologies.

Weapons: Control Cards. An extremely long Revolver.

Weaknesses: His delusions. If one where to seriously affect his precious little world, Tetch often retreats within his own mind. He hates it when people tamper with his tech, but will become completely devastated if someone where to ruin his hat. He completely shuts down when forced to face the real world.

Personal History:

Early Years

Jervis was born to Mordecai and Eliza Tetch in a low income area of Gotham City. Mordecai was the owner of a very unsuccessful "Hatter and Haberdashery," a clothing retail store. While Eliza was a housewife. The couple constantly faced economic issues. Still the ever hopeful, Mordecai was determined to keep his business afloat and to accomplish this he taught his son at an young age how to tailor. This was all tactical, grooming the young Jervis to take over the shop when he was older. The issue of the matter was his father was too overbearing and critical of Jervis. Then one night Mordecai struck Jervis in a drunken rage over a simple mistake. Eliza was very coddling of Jervis and very protective of the boy, immediately stepping in and ending their training sessions. While Eliza spared Jervis more trouble, she didn't fail to press her own ambitions as well.

Eliza wanted Jervis to be educated with her hope that Jervis will avoid the hard life they live. She heavily believes the only way Jervis will live a happy and successful life is to have a complete education. In order to do so, she exposed Jervis to stimulating and educational pastimes. The most successful of which was reading classic literature before he went to bed. Eliza read to him the works of such authors as W.B. Yeats, Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells, but his most favorite was Lewis Carroll. Every night Jervis would ask to be read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. His mother, the pleaser she was, always conceded

Despite having an alcoholic father and having less than other children, life wasn't so bad. This would all change however, when Mordecai's business went under. After he lost his business they couldn't keep payments on the house and eventually went bankrupt. In order to avoid living out in the streets his mother managed to secure them a room at a boarding house. Their landlord was a strict woman named Ella Littleton, who had deep fundamentalist views. The living conditions were not as high as their previous home. Sometimes the nights were too cold and the days too hot. Still basic water, electricity, and gas worked. The only silver lining for Jervis was the landlord's daughter, Connie Littleton. She was the spitting image of Carroll's Alice. Having recognized this he naturally gravitated towards her.

Tetch never had a friend in his life. He was always socially awkward and the other kids made fun of his teeth and oddly shaped head. This was made even worse when it became apparent that his growth was stunted. Connie on the other hand was a kind, gentle soul who never made fun of Jervis. Jervis was actually very charming to the young girl. They soon developed a strong friendship, one that Connie's mother didn't disprove of, which was something difficult at the time. She normally didn't have Connie hang out with other boys for fear of sexual deviancy. Yet seeing Tetch's appearance and low opinion of himself, she felt she had little to worry. It's hard to say if Connie was the one thing prolonging Tetch's descent into madness, if the two had not been friends would he have turned out so wrong? What is for certain is that because of her, Jervis spiraled down into his madness.

Down the Rabbit Hole

The young children's friendship lasted into High School. It was thanks to her that Jervis had some form of confidence, being a valued member of the Computer Club, AV Club, and the Science Club. At this stage in his life, Jervis showed a great interest in science and technology, even meddling with the idea of altering brain functions. He had an acute interest in the mind and how it worked, but the one thing he had greater interest in was Connie. What started out as some innocent crush has transformed into full-blown infatuation. The problem at the time was that Connie was dating another boy, who Tetch never liked. He was a member of the baseball team and his buddies would constantly make fun of Jervis. They would call him names like nerd and midget. In the end Connie would always defend him. Staving off their brutal assaults from time to time.

Then one day everything changed. Connie was tricked into the boy's locker room by her boyfriend, where she wasn't only raped but gang raped by the team. After the deed was done she ran home scared about what might happen. She tried desperately to hide the evidence of the rape, placed on make-up to hide some of the bruises, destroyed the clothes she worn that day, and took many birth control pills. Worried she took a pregnancy test and it was confirmed positive. Having no one else to turn to she told Jervis what had happened to her. She then asked him to keep it a secret and Tetch's lips were sealed.

Even with Connie's thoroughness the secret was destined to be released. Ella found the discarded pregnancy test in the trash one day. Outraged she confronted her daughter and Connie broke underneath the weight of the situation. She confessed everything and her mother was disgusted by not only what happen but when she said she wanted an abortion, she disowned her. Isolated and broken she chose the only option she believed she had and committed suicide. When the news reached Jervis he was confused but most of all, heartbroken. Seeing as the object of his desire can never be he wanted revenge. Jervis then sets out on a quest for vendetta, seeking to end the lives of those responsible for Connie's death. This would lead into the first criminal act Jervis ever committed.

Although he was without the high grade technology he possess as an adult, he showed aptitude as a manipulator, using misdirection and blackmail. He obtained videos of the rape from the more stupid members of the team using nothing but his cleverness. He then began to torment the perpetrator of the rape, Connie's ex-boyfriend. He sent letters and incriminating evidence to him in secret. He threatened to reveal what he had done to the police. Feeling threatened with jail time the teen became increasingly paranoid. His life was slowly being deconstructed with this stigma hanging over his head, and eventually Jervis gave an ultimatum. Either he repents by killing himself and the team or face the consequences. Being cruel Jervis started to slowly leak this info, as it began to spread like a virus. Out of fear the boy did kill himself and the team by bringing a pipe bomb to school and setting it off in the locker room. Jervis was rather surprised by how easily he could force someone to do what he wishes.

Without Connie in his life, Jervis felt empty and alone. Despite the bombing it didn't relieve him of the bullies who had free reign to hurt him without the cushion of Connie to fall back upon. He became detached and remote from his peers but the final nail in the coffin was his parents. One night Jervis accidentally discovers his father raping a little girl. Jervis was undoubtedly devastated, the very act that killed Connie was being perpetrated by his own father. It would seem Mordecai had been dissatisfied with Eliza for sometime now and their marriage was falling apart. The day however when Jervis discovered it was the day his wife did as well. She always suspected he wasn't being faithful but never suspected he was a pedophile. They filed for divorce and Jervis's home life was split forever. Life for Jervis hit it's hardest living with his mother in an even more run down apartment. She used every last penny to push Jervis into college.

Into Adulthood

It's difficult to give an exact time when Jervis accepted the delusion that he is the Mad Hatter. Though the reason may be even more elusive than the when. He went into college majoring in neuroscience. He intended to create drugs to help with psychosis though diverged from his plans and began to tamper with the idea of mind control. His work, while brilliant, was controversial and very disturbing. He managed to earn a doctorate in the field but could never hold a job. It has been frequently mentioned that Jervis possibly suffers from mental illness. This is demonstrated by his strange behavior around coworkers making them uncomfortable. He was especially strange around women and has been fired for sexual harassment. Without a steady income Jervis was forced to live in a run down apartment himself. It was possibly the realization that his adult life is just like his childhood was the reason he became delusional. That the real world was a terrible place to live, so much so Jervis needed an escape. He found one in Wonderland.

Before the birth of the Hatter, Jervis ironically revitalized his father's old business. This wasn't in honor to him but rather to indulge in his increasingly disturbing fantasies. He began to create clothing, specifically hats and sold them to potential customers. The money earned was then spent into gaining materials to continue on his deviant research. Before long Jervis outfitted himself with custom made clothes to mimic Carroll's description of the Hatter. Believing wholeheartedly into the delusion that he is the Mad Hatter. Now in his fledgling role, the Hatter looks to branch out and bring a new, nonsensical perspective to Gotham City!
