Introduction

Image
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life

On the surface, Roseville is a perfect tourist spot. A rather beautiful city, with an abundance of independent businesses and some rather niche businesses, it seems... happy. But beneath the surface, there's a war that nobody dares mention. Two warring families, a feud that has existed for so long that people can hardly remember how it started. But it remains as brutal as ever. Businesses sabotaged, rumours spread to the media... it's a side that is lurking just beneath the shiny surface.

And then, as always, something changes. A son and a daughter of the two families meet, without knowing who the other is. Both carrying their own problems, both desperately trying to bury them. And in the space of a night, they fall in love. But then they discover who the other is, and are heartbroken. But can they overcome their families' differences to get their happy ending? Or will they be like the immortal star-cross'd lovers, destined to only be together in death?

James hadn’t gotten very far when he felt someone grab his arm and drag him into an alleyway. Expecting a fight, he whirled around- and instead Chloe stood there, telling him to just be quiet. He folded his arms, leaned against the wall opposite her, and listened. He could remember the anger when the shipment had fallen through. Ryan had been quiet at the table- not quiet enough to give way that he’d been involved. His silence could have been mistaken for anger, but now it made sense. The limp he’d sported for a few weeks after hadn’t been the result of a random mugging, either. James couldn’t quite make eye contact as Chloe got to her feet, but he didn’t offer any resistance as she opened his hand. Her touch felt like an electric shock, but in the best way possible. And he sighed. “Chloe, I’m... I can’t do this any more. I need to get away from this life, I need to find somewhere else. I haven’t gone home since that night. Nobody’s come looking for me either, which is... they clearly don’t care any more. I can move my classes to online, I’m planning on doing that later.” He raised a hand to run his thumb along her cheekbone, still not quite able to make eye contact. “And your family loves you. If I disappear, nobody will notice or care. If you do, somebody will. And if we disappear together, I’m afraid our families will notice and be angry. My family might care about me if yours is involved.” And he sighed and dropped his arm. “I would love to bring you with me. But I don’t want to put you at risk either.”

Chloe stared at James as she finished speaking, not quite sure exactly what he would do. Honestly, she wasn’t quite sure what she would do if the tables were turned, but right now was not about if’s and made up scenarios. Even though Chloe loved being around James, right now it just felt off, forced. James spoke up after he sighed, Chloe just staring at him as he talked, looking at his handsome eyes, and pretty lips moved as she spoke.

At first Chloe was saddened, hearing him talk about how he couldn’t do this anymore, but she completely understood. She would probably feel the same if she left for an extended time and no one cared. I didn’t know where you went, I wanted to come looking for you James… Chloe thought to herself. She was quickly brought out of her thoughts feeling James’ thumb run across her cheek, this immediately put a smile on her face, making her blush as well. She missed his touch so much and this just sent a warm feeling throughout Chloe’s entire body.

The next thing James said really caught Chloe’s attention, about leaving. Something that only slightly went across her mind, more as a joke than anything, but right now it was a real possibility. Though James was right about one thing, even if his family didn’t care if the left, her family would quickly take notice if she disappeared and cut ties, and if they found out if it was for James, who knows what could happen. They could burn the city down looking for her, or send thugs after him and her, it would practically be betraying the Salant family, her family. Chloe jumped a little as James let go of her face and let his arm down. He mentioned that he would like to bring her but was worried about putting her at risk.

The two sat in silence for a second, Chloe thinking about what she should say, what she could do. Chloe squatted down so she was wear his eyes were, so they could look each other in the eyes, and held both his hands. “James… We can go. I have cash saved up and hidden from jobs that I keep as an emergency outside of my families’ accounts. I can get us a car that won’t be as traceable as one of our family cars. We can get out of this city, and go somewhere, anywhere together.” Chloe said, standing up and letting go of James’ right hand, and putting her hand on his cheek. “If I stay, I will be in as much danger as if I go. Our families’ little war is getting worse and worse every day. I’m already at risk, you just saw that your family sent someone to my apartment.” Chloe said, frowning a little and looking down at the ground.

“James Deveraux, there isn’t anyone else in the world I’d rather run away with than you.” Chloe said after a pause, looking up at James and planting a kiss on his lips. Something she wanted to do since the day he left the trainyard.

The reminder that things weren't safe for Chloe either made him hesitate, think. Even still, he was afraid that them leaving together would bring both their families after them. He hadn't realised how much he'd been craving this, craving being this close to Chloe, even being able to kiss her. He ran a thumb along her cheek and sighed. "We can't rush into this. I have stuff I need to get sorted out before I can leave, and we need to plot and plan. I just... I don't want to risk you getting hurt because you ran away with me. Think about it. Don't rush into this, okay? I promise I'll let you know where I am, and we can stay in touch. I'll disappear from everyone but you. But if you want to get away from this too... I'd love you to come. If we can do it, it sounds perfect." He kissed her again, soft and gentle, but brief.

"I need to get out of here, even if I'm not affiliated with my family. I promise I'll text you back from now on, okay?" He said with a grin. "And I'll keep you in the loop. Let you know what I decide."

Chloe giggled lightly when James mentioned that they shouldnt, well couldn’t, rush into it. Chloe, and her family, wasn’t one to think things through or to plan before they did something, most of the time just rushing in and making it up as they go. So it made sense that James would want to think and plan it out. Plus he did mention that he still had things to do. In all honestly and theory, it would be easier for Chloe to pick up her things and run than it would be for James. She didn't really have anything in Roseville tying her down besides her family, while James was currently doing school for his degree and attempting to manage his life.

Chloe face started to turn red after James kissed her again. Even though she just kissed him, it still made her feel warm being in his embrace and being close to him. “I promise darling. But I do want to be with you, there’s something about being with you… I just, don’t want to lose.” Chloe said, squeezing James’ hand she was holding gently. She nodded in response of him saying he needed to go. He was right, they weren’t in neutral ground and he wasn’t exactly safe right now. A thought popped into Chloe’s head before James left, tugging on his arm one last time. “Oh! This might sound cliché and weird, but I feel like we should have some sort of code word for when, I mean if, we do this James. You know, just in case?” Chloe said smiling and shrugging her shoulders.

Before James left, Chloe looked out of the alleyway to make sure it was clear and looked back him nodding that it was all good. As he left, Chloe leaned against the wall and watched him walk out of sight, smile on her face. "I think I love you James Devereaux..." She said under her breathe to herself.

It was finally time. James' bags were tossed in the back of his car, having successfully made it back to the house to recover his belongings. But now, his mother knew. He'd felt so bad about leaving without telling her. But even if he'd wanted to, she'd intercepted him in the house. Somehow she knew. She knew what he was thinking of. She'd handed him a bank card, one attached to an account his father didn't know about, one she'd set up for emergencies. She'd told him she'd make sure that his father didn't know, and told him to do what he could.

And he trusted her more than ever. He knew she'd do her best to keep him safe. Which meant he had decided that Chloe had to come with him. Now he knew that it would be safe, he couldn't leave her behind. The thought of it felt like a punch to his stomach. He'd stayed in contact with her too, as subtly as he could for fear her family would find the texts. But now it was time. Time to ditch all of this and move on.

He'd driven to a shady gas station on the edge of town, in neutral territory, to meet her. As he got out of his car, he pulled on a baseball cap to cover his face. He went in and got two Cokes and some chips, before sending the text to Chloe.

"Verona is go." His signal to come meet him. He got into his car again, keeping the baseball cap on. He wasn't taking any chances with the CCTV.

Since their confrontation and talk, Chloe had been slowly draining her account, but not enough to raise any suspicion. Whenever she would but anything from a gas station or convenience store, she would pull out 10-20 bucks in cash back. If confronted she could just say she had to buy some extra things or wanted to have some cash on her in case she needed it for the few places around town that only accepted cash. One day her mother did ask about how her account was a couple hundred short than it should be with their recent hauls of merchandise and such, Chloe just made up a story about a new piece of jewelry she was wearing, claiming it was pretty and she couldn’t pass it up. It wasn’t exactly a lie, it was pretty and she did impulse buy it, but it definitely was not that expensive.

Chloe had just walked back into her apartment, returning from a small reconnaissance mission her father had sent her on, she had to keep up the appearance that nothing was wrong, that her mind wasn’t only thinking about leaving town with James. Hell, he might never give the code word and they would never leave town, it was still only a possibility. However her and James had been talking and it seemed it would happen, sooner rather than later actually. Right as Chloe flopped down on her bed her phone buzzed. “Ugh, I just want to relax god damnit.” She said as she sighed out loud, before slowly rolling over and seeing it was a text from James, quickly sitting up to read it, a smile creeping across her face as she saw the code word they set up.

Getting up quickly, Chloe flipped her mattress over revealing a layer of numerous different bills wrapped up in rubber bands and labeled with sticky notes saying how much each wad was. She quickly stuffed them into a backpack and then pulled a suitcase out of the closet. Chloe had pre-packed some clothes ready to go, but still had to throw some stuff she had to leave out, along with some extra ammo of course her favorite knifes. As she finished getting her stuff, Chloe grabbed an old lipstick off her dresser and wont on her door a message to her family. I’m leaving. Sorry and goodbye. Don’t chase me. Before quickly heading downstairs with, luckily the rest of her family was still out and not home.

It didn’t take Chloe long to meet up with James, taking a cheap unmarked truck to the location they had agreed to meet up out of town. She took numerous side streets so it would be hard to track and follow her just to be safe. Plus the vehicle she had drove wasn’t known to her family, a cheap pick-up that she only drove around for emergencies. As Chloe reached the gas station it took her a second to spot and locate James, seeing him waiting in a car around the side of the gas station. Chloe pulled the truck up around the back of the gas station and leaving the keys in it with the windows down, not really caring if it was stolen, actually hoping it would be. She quickly took her suit case and loaded it into James’ car, keeping the backpack with the cash and an extra pistol in the front seat with her.

As Chloe sat down in the passenger seat, she quickly leaned over grabbing James’ face and kissing him. “I’m ready baby…” She said before leaning back into her seat and fastening her seatbelt and taking a look around.
