Introduction
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers
On the surface, Roseville is a perfect tourist spot. A rather beautiful city, with an abundance of independent businesses and some rather niche businesses, it seems... happy. But beneath the surface, there's a war that nobody dares mention. Two warring families, a feud that has existed for so long that people can hardly remember how it started. But it remains as brutal as ever. Businesses sabotaged, rumours spread to the media... it's a side that is lurking just beneath the shiny surface.
And then, as always, something changes. A son and a daughter of the two families meet, without knowing who the other is. Both carrying their own problems, both desperately trying to bury them. And in the space of a night, they fall in love. But then they discover who the other is, and are heartbroken. But can they overcome their families' differences to get their happy ending? Or will they be like the immortal star-cross'd lovers, destined to only be together in death?

The Devereaux family gang held just about everything else that the Salantβs didnβt, plus they were always at each otherβs throats, always at war. Chloe would come to their territory most of the time to do a job for her mother or father, but right now she just wanted to feel normal. She was wearing casual clothes, dress long enough to cover her tattoo and a knife hidden in her boot, with light make up; red lipstick and black eyeliner. People wouldnβt recognize her as well here, yeah maybe an actual Devereaux family member might, like Ryan, but the usuals wouldnβt, she was just another girl on the streets walking around. Chloe had only seen two members of the actual Devereaux family, the mother behind everything, and the eldest son Ryan. She had only seen the mother during one of the few non violent confrontations between the two families, possible peace talks, but it just ended in both parties yelling and weapons being drawn before it dying down. And met Ryan through a temporally alliance, which ended with her stabbing him and ratting him out.
As Chloe weaved through the crowds on the sidewalk, a man caught her eye βFuckβ¦β Chloe whispered to herself, the man that she spotted was a henchmen that she had a run in with during one of her previous βadventuresβ to this side of town, she got away easily, but she was worried he would see her and recognize her. Chloe looked and saw a small coffee shop, and decided to duck into it in the hopes of not being recognized. Why did I have to come into a damn coffee shop, ugh. She thought to herself as she stood in line, she grabbed a tall energy can and a pastry and handed cash to the barista that gave her a weird look for buying an energy drink at a coffee shop. βKeep the change.β Chloe said with a light smile after handing them a 20 dollar bill, she scanned the room, there werenβt many seats left, and most of them were facing the window. She spotted one seat where the back was to the door, and from behind was just some guy who looked like he was writing something, Chloe quickly sat across from the boy and opened her energy drink and took a swig, hoping that they wouldnβt come in. Maybe they wonβt recognize me, it was dark when I ran into them last time after allβ¦. she thought to herself, then finally looking at the boy across from her.
Black curly medium-long length hair that somehow seemed to glow, deep handsome brown eyes, sharp jaw line, pretty solid built, probably around six feet tall, and much more; he seemed so freaking handsome. Chloe caught herself staring and quickly looked back down and took a sip from her drink before trying to start a conversation. βHey, sorry. Werenβt many seats around, hope you donβt mind me sitting with you..β Chloe said with a smile, trying to think of what else to say, but all she could think about was just wanting to say how handsome he was. βSo, uh, whatcha writing about?β She continued, little nervous about talking to him, but not really caring about the henchmen she had just tried to avoid, all her focus on this boy. Chloe ran lightly ran her hand through her hair so it wasnβt in her face. Chloe continued listening to him, looking all lovely into his eyes, blushing a little.

Which he was at that particular moment in time. His family was as bad as ever. There had been some kind of meeting at the house the previous night. James had been invited. He would have been expected to attend had he not had the excuse of an extremely important paper he was working on. Which he was still working on, the following day. He just couldn't wrap his head around it. It was Shakespeare, something he loved and usually was good at. But the stress was getting to him and was completely ruining his thinking process. Even his hazelnut latte wasn't helping his mood. And somewhere, a voice he was desperately trying to drown out was reminding him that if he failed, if he got kicked out of college, he'd be kicked out of the family. He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.
He looked up as a girl slid into the seat across from him, taking out one headphone and raising an eyebrow. Really, an energy drink in a coffee shop? Those things tasted like shit on a good day. That seemed like sacrilege. She was staring at him now, making anxiety bubble in his stomach. Had she recognised him or something?
Her casual tone didn't think to imply so. He shrugged as she asked him about what he was writing. "An essay for college. And I'm really more attempting to write it, it's... slow going at the minute," he admitted with a grin, subconsciously tugging his sleeves a little further down over his hands. "What brings you here with your... energy drink?" He asked. She was pretty... and a little familiar. He glanced back down at his coffee, unable to sustain the eye contact for quite that long.

Chloe took a quick glance around the coffee shop, making sure those guys didnβt come in and luckily she hadnβt seen them, after turning around she sighed. Yeah that was smooth, tell him you came in here and you forgot you donβt like coffee, real believable. she thought to herself before talking again. βOkay, I like being honest, so sorry. I saw some guy on the street, who I had history with, and didnβt want to have confrontation.β Chloe said, sulking in her seat, trying to sell the whole possible ex-boyfriend story. Plus it was not lying, just not telling the whole truth. βAnd I thought if I sat with a good-looking person, I would look less noticeable to him.β Chloe said with a smile, flirting to see what type of reaction she could get out of him.
Chloe leaned a little over to see what he was actually writing about, she had learned how to read different things form various angels, helps with getting information. βShakespeare? Really?β Chloe asked, while in high school she loved doing drama, it helped shape the beginning of how well she was able to act when doing assignments with her family. βI love Shakespeare. All the varieties he wrote, from tragedies like Romeo and Juliet, comedies like Much Ado, and my personal favorite, Taming of the Shrew.β Chloe relaxed a bit more after finally having some conversation with this cute boy, but hoping she wasnβt being too bothersome.
After finishing her energy drink, Chloe continue to listen to this boys sweet voice. She took off one of her many bracelets and started playing with it to ease her nerves. Yes, Chloe may be relaxed, but she was still nervous being in Devereaux territory, as well as talking to a cute boy. She pulled her jacket sleeve back down, not realizing she accidentally pulled it up while taking off one of her bracelets, hoping he didn't see any of her scars. Some from fights, others from her just being dumb with her knife.

βI, uh... Hamlet is my favorite. The eternal question of whether or not Hamlet is truly mad, the question of Gertrudeβs motivations, whether or not Claudius is a good king, and whether or not Opheliaβs death was a suicide... I like things that make you think. Leave you wondering,β he said. In reality, he related to Hamlet a hell of a lot more than he was going to ever admit. A depressed prince left in a role he was unable to handle, and eventually going mad? It seemed a little too close to home. James just hoped that his story would have a happier ending.
βIβm actually doing my essay on Hamlet. How his character would have been received at the time and how that perception has changed. The second part is okay. But I hate history and Iβm struggling to put my thoughts into a coherent sentence that will be acceptable to my professor.β He admitted. βI thought coming here for a change in scenery and a good coffee might help, but... it isnβt really.β He shut down the lid of his laptop and shoved it back into his bag. βBut maybe a conversation with a pretty girl might?β He remarked with a smirk, returning her compliment from earlier.

Chloe blushed a little with comment he gave her, yeah she had just complimented her, but it was just reaction from a handsome boy calling her pretty. Plus back over in her territory, males were too intimated by her own name to try in fear of her father, and even if they didnβt know who she was exactly, they werenβt like this boy across from her. No, there was something about this boy, something that just fascinated her.
After finally finishing up playing with her bracelet, Chloe just set it aside instead of putting it on. βWell, I actually do know this one pretty girl. I think she would really like you.β Chloe said with a giggle. βSo, Mr. Hamlet, what should we talk about?β She said, not knowing his name at the time so just referencing the play he talked about. Chloe set her elbows on the table and put her chin on them, holding her head. In the middle of their conversation Chloeβs ringer on her phone went off, she pulled her phone out and quickly declined the call and placed it face down on the table, not wanting to be pulled back to reality. She had no idea who had just called her, and hope they wouldnβt call again.

As she asked him what they should talk about, he took a sip of his coffee, giving himself a chance to think. "Tell me about yourself. About what exactly went down with that guy you had history with. Tell me something interesting," he asked. "I like interesting people, and I like interesting stories even more," He remarked. He didn't miss her phone starting to ring, and her knocking it off almost immediately. "You can take that if you want, I don't mind," he said, shrugging a little. His own phone buzzed, and he glanced at it. A text from Ryan. [i]Meeting with the Salants is confirmed. Tomorrow evening. Couldn't get it in a neutral place so we're going to them. Dad says we're going to go armed.[i]
James had to suppress the temptation to grimace at the text, somehow managing to keep his expression neutral. He hated carrying weapons. Sure, he understood why it was probably a good idea, but he hated the feel of a gun on his hip. He wasn't terribly happy about having to go to them either. But he knew he didn't have an option.

βFine, if you really want to know about what happened.β Chloe sulked a little, not really wanting to tell the story. βCouple of weeks ago I ran into him. Before that we hadnβt seen eachother in awhile, more of my choice than his.β She continued, speaking in a quieter tone, a tone that would hopefully put the correct point across. Chloe pulled her jacket open a little and moved her hair out of the way to show a bruise on her collar bone. βHe did this to me before I was able to get away from him, I carry a blade on me now.β Once again, everything she had said was true, just some details missing. βSo yeah, thatβs that heartwarming story.β Chloe gave with a light sarcastic chuckle as she fixed her jacket and let her hair fall back down.
As she finished the story, Chloeβs phone dinged twice, signaling some text messages came through. She grabbed her phone with a sigh and unlocked it to see what all the commotion about. Next time pick up your phone when I call you Was the first text from her father, she just rolled her eyes and continued. Devereaux want to have a talk tomorrow night. Our territory, the old garage we use to run guns through. But awhile but we will know it better than them. Expect them to bring heat. Chloe locked her phone and slid it back into her pocket. βParents right?β she said leaning back in her chair.
Chloe was surprised to have the meeting in their own territory, but it would hopefully prevent them from starting anything, she wondered if her father would make her carry a gun, or just let her have her knives. βAnyways, Iβm not entirely from this side of town. Have to live a slightly rough life on the other side of Roseville, if you get what I mean.β Chloe paused for a second. βSo what is there to do besides get an energy drink at a coffee shop?β Chloe let out with a giggle, she wanted to push the conversation away from herself, so she wouldnβt have the chance to slip up.

He smirked as she made the comment about parents, but inside, he found himself wondering what exactly family drama meant to her. If it was just her father being overprotective or not caring enough. James did this to himself every time anyone mentioned anything about their family. He always found himself comparing their lives and wishing that he wasn't stuck in the life he was. It wasn't healthy and he knew it.
He raised his eyebrows as she mentioned not being from this side of town. She seemed to think it was relatively affluent, which surprised him. Everyone who lived in this city knew of the drama beneath the surface, and many knew the lines marking out particular territories, and where was no man's land. He wondered if she was from their territory, if that was what she meant.
"Honestly, there isn't a whole pile to do around here. The library's pretty nice if you want somewhere quiet to just chill, or get some work done. We have the park, which is fine as long as you keep yourself to yourself and don't look at anyone else too long or too hard. This isn't the most exciting part of town, people are... kinda afraid of it at times," he admitted with a laugh.

Usually in this territory, Chloe would have to watch her back, be worried about whats around each corner. But she felt safe right now, truly safe. Plus, a girl talking to a boy is less suspicious than a girl just walking around, people wouldnβt do a double take, they would just assume they were just on a date, or a couple. βBut I understand what you mean by people being scared. Fear is motivator for people, some use it as a weapon.β Chloe said trailing off. She knew very what fear does, and how it can be used. Itβs how her family keeps people in check, sheβs even had to use fear sometimes, and when that doesnβt work, you just have to escalate things.
Chloeβs mind wondered as she thought to back to the text from her father, this whole meeting with the Devereaux. Could they really put differences aside and come up with some sort of treaty? Chloe doubted it, there was already bad blood. Salant suspected Devereaux was responsible for the death of Chloeβs older brother. Plus, when Chloe betrayed Ryan, he definitely hasnβt forgotten or forgiven, but he hasnβt told anyone yet, she was sure of that. Because if he had, the Devereaux wouldβve told her father or mother about Chloe betraying them.
A buzz in Chloeβs pocket brought her back to reality, as she pulled out her phone again she saw a message from her mother wondering where she was and wanting her back home ASAP. Needed to plan and get stuff straight before the meeting. βUgh my mother is starting to ask questions, I need to head back home.β Chloe said a she stood up. She grabbed a napkin off the table and a pen out from the inside of her jacket and wrote her number on it. βCall me sometime?β Chloe said as she leaned in and gave a soft kiss on the boys cheek and stuff the napkin with her number on it into his jacket pocket.
After the kiss, Chloe grabbed her trash and threw it away on her way out, looking back and giving a wink to him as she walked out the door. After she saw she was clear and he didnβt follow her outside, she darted down an alley way and went the fastest route back to her territory, the entire time thinking of the boy she met, hopefully he would call her, or atleast text. Chloe totally forgot about her bracelet she left on the table after she was done fiddling with it. It wasnβt anything expensive, and it wasnβt too special to her, all it said was her first name so she wasnβt too worried about it.

And then the girl across from him brought him back down to earth. She had to leave, her own family needed her. He smiled as she wrote her number on a napkin. As she kissed him on the cheek, tucking her number into his pocket, he was momentarily stunned. And then she left, before he could even respond. It was only when she was gone a few minutes that he noticed the bracelet on the table. He picked it up and spun it around. Her name. Chloe. He tucked it into his pocket with the napkin and her number, and found himself oddly cheerful for the rest of the day.
That mood, however, diminished quickly the following day. It was taken up with preparations for the meeting. For the most part, he avoided them, but that didn't do anything for the awful sense of anxiety he was feeling. And there was nothing he could do to get out of it. So when the time came, he dressed exactly as his father had instructed. The perfectly tailored suit. His hair tied back in a low ponytail so he couldn't even hide his face. No bracelets or anything he could fiddle with. They needed to look like a complete unit. And they did, and he hated that. He especially hated the feeling of the loaded gun at his hip.
As they drove to the meeting point, James tried his best to suppress the awful bubbling anxiety at the bottom of his stomach. But there was nothing he could do. He couldn't get out of this situation. Even thinking of his chance encounter the day before had done nothing. He hadn't even worked up the guts to text Chloe.

Chloe followed behind her parents in her own vehicle, she liked traveling separate, gives her freedom to listen to whatever music, and she could do what she wants after the meeting. During the drive Chloe checked her phone numerous times and has been the whole morning while getting the brief and plan for the meeting, but no text or call from the coffee shop boy. She sighed as she slid her phone into her pocket and turned into the garage behind her parents, backing in case things go south.
After Chloe got out of her vehicle the popped the trunk and got ready for the other family to get here. She slid her knives into the sheaths inside of her jacket and tucked the pistol her father gave her in the back of her belt, easy access and not fully shown. She liked wearing sleeveless tops whenever doing jobs, items tend to get caught of stuff less and it showed off some of her scars. Her jeans were a little ripped and dirty, but her family didnβt care too much about what she wore so she wore whatever was comfy. The jeans did have a hole on her thigh, she liked to show off her Salant tattoo so people knew who they were messing with.
As the waited for the Devereaux family to get there, Chloe was getting bored so she started throwing two knives at a time into a wooden pillar, walking and grabbing them, and repeating. She saw some headlights out of the corner of her eye as she retrieved her knives after about the 7th time. The doors opened from the vehicleβs she threw the knives into the pillar a last time, as she was walking back her mother said something to her father. βLooks like they finally brought the other son, think his name is Jamesβ Chloe looked up after getting back to her parents, looking at the Devereaux, being completely shocked at who she saw.
The boy from the coffee shop, heβ¦ was a Devereaux? No, no this couldnβt be real. Chloe attempted to keep a straight face, hide her emotion. She put one of her knives away, and kept the other one in her hand, twirling it around her fingers. βLetβs get this over with sooner rather than later dad.β Chloe said outloud to her father. Her stomach was in a knot, the boy she fell for, is one of her greatest enemies.

"Enough pleasantries. Shall we get started?" His father asked, his tone already indicating that it wasn't a question. James wasn't listening to the actual discussion. He was having to focus all of his attention on three things. Not freaking out, not staring at Chloe, and trying to quell the increasing wave of panic that was building in his chest.
It suddenly felt like the universe was mocking him personally. A girl he had genuinely liked, who had caught his interest and who had seemed interested in him... and she was from the one family he could definitely not interact with. Not unless it was with a gun at his side and his family surrounding him. He couldn't be a Devereaux. Because Devereaux did not even look at Savants like that. He was truly not one of the family.
And the panic came crashing over him like a wave. "Excuse me," he said, nearly more to his parents than to anyone else, and turned around into the fresh air, stepping outside and out of view. He had to stop himself from sinking the ground, and instead took a deep breath, instinctively going to run his hands through his hair and pulling strands out of the neat ponytail he'd had it in. He couldn't do this. He didn't know what to do but he just couldn't.

As Chloe got out of sight of the others, she climbed up a ladder and stayed up above to go around the building, trying to see James from above. After a couple seconds she found him adjusting his hair out of the ponytail, she crouched and watched him. His poor beautiful hair is wrapped up. Probably because of that professional looks Devereaux try to give off, like they are better than us. Chloe thought to herself. Chloe stood up and quickly threw a knife to get his attention, itβs blade sticking into a tire about a foot next to him, probably spooking him, but knowing she got his attention.
βFirst you donβt call, and then you have the audacity to not even look at me? Is it the scars on my arms? Or my tattoo?β Chloe asked in a fake questioning tone, slightly sarcastic. βOr is it you forgot to mention your family basically owned the damn coffee shop!?β Chloe asked rhetorically, raising her voice slightly to get her point across, but not enough for everyone inside to her hear. She climbed down and walked past James and grabbed her knife out of the tire, turning around to face him. βBefore you ask, everything I said was true and I meant it. The bruise is from someone I didnβt want to confront, one of YOUR henchmen. And yes, I do like you. I fell head over heels for a damn Devereaux.β Chloe said with a sharp tone as she turned her back to him. She was upset, with herself and James.
Chloeβs mind raced. What was she doing? Why doesnβt she just forget about him, go back to hating his family, and continue living her life as she just was? Her mind told her to just walk away and rejoin her family back inside, but her heart was telling her to stay. Chloeβs hand was shaking a little, she was letting her emotions get the best of her.

You have the audacity to come looking for trouble on our territory, then say it's our fault you got attacked? If I set a foot in yours without my parents, without being on official business, I'd be killed in a heartbeat. And I don't even have anything to do with it."
He sighed and pulled out the hair tie holding his hair back in frustration. He'd tie it back up before he went back in to face his father. "I didn't ask for this, okay? I didn't even want to be here tonight. If I had my choice, I'd have nothing to do with this. But I don't. I didn't choose to be a part of this. If I had my choice, nobody would care what my surname was, I'd be able to fall for whoever the hell I wanted. I just..." He shrugged. Paused. Forced himself to take a deep breath and look anywhere other than at her. "You shouldn't have even been there in the first place." He wasn't making sense, his mind was a whirl and he really, really wanted to just leave already. But they were deep in Savant territory, which meant he wasn't walking out without his parents by his side.

βYou were the one who kissed me first!β He said, forcing himself to keep his voice down. They werenβt far enough away to argue about this without being overheard, and that really wasnβt something he wanted. βListen to me, we canβt talk about this here. Theyβll start to think something is up if weβre both gone for too-β He didnβt get a chance to finish that thought as gunshots rung out from inside the garage. James looked at Chloe for one brief moment, then drew his gun and ran back around to the entrance of the garage. He didnβt know what he was walking into. His whole family could be dead. The amount of gunshots still ringing seemed to indicate that there was still a firefight, so somebody had to be alive.
He hesitated for one moment before entering. He had never been good with a gun and it felt like an idiotic move to walk straight into a situation he was unprepared for. But he couldnβt leave his family to die. And if they lived, theyβd never forgive him. Maybe this would convince everyone that he did fit, that he was a Devereaux. So he stepped inside and started firing.

As Chloe peaked open through a door, she saw both families currently at full capacity, firing at each other. Luckily for her, the Devereaux hadnβt spotted her yet, she had the upper hand on them, plus she had them flanked. Before she knew what she wanted to do, she saw James firing into the mist. He really needs to work on his gun work Chloe thought to herself before quickly throwing a knife towards the mother of the Devereaux, the knife missing her by inches but sticking into the car exterior next to her. After missing Chloe decided to even the odds, a knife wouldnβt do much at this distance, so she pulled out the pistol from her belt but keeping a knife in her off hand.
Right when Chloe stepped out, she heard someone yell out in pain, as she looked she saw that mother was caught by bullet I her shoulder and was down behind a vehicle. When Chloe tracked to see who wouldβve shot on her, she saw the culprit, Ryan Devereaux. Chloe looked around the room and saw some propane tanks across the room, away from everyone. Chloe quickly fired at them and a small explosion blew out part of the wall, causing smoke to fill the room, along with some flames that triggered the sprinkler system. βGet Mom out of here.β Chloe yelled towards her father and the few muscle they brought as she ran through the room using the smoke as cover.
Chloe tackled Ryan over a vehicle, both of them landing hard and their gunβs sliding across the room and into the fire. βI shouldβve finished the job instead of letting you go.β Chloe said as she swiped with one of her knives, grazing his arm with it. She knew she couldnβt out fight Ryan, she was smaller and not as strong, but she was just trying to distract him and whoever else, so her mother and father could get out. Ryan punched Chloe in the stomach and pushed her back, her stumbling into the smoke that was quickly filling the room. A support beam fell a few feet to Chloeβs left, she looked around confused. Fuck, that explosion did a little more damage than I thought it would, took out some structure support. Chloe thought to herself, attempting to look through the smoke and crumbling debris.

But his heart sank as he saw Chloe running towards Ryan and tackling him. They fought for a few moments, before getting to their feet and stumbling back from each other. A beam came crashing down, landing only a few feet from James, and he scrambled away from it, dropping his gun in his panic. He whirled around, wanting to call out to Ryan, to Chloe, but the words stuck in his chest. And then he saw it. A beam, already coming loose. It was going to fall. It was going to fall onto Ryan and Chloe. Or maybe just one. James didn't know what one, but before he had time to dwell on it, he was running and barrelling towards them. And just as he collided with Chloe, his arms reaching out to drag Ryan out of the way, the beam came crashing down. For a moment, he swore he blacked out with the pain. But then he was pinned to the floor by the weight of it, one leg completely trapped by it.
"James!" Ryan yelled, dropping to his knees. "What the fuck were you doing?" He asked, dropping his voice a little.
"Trying to stop you from getting crushed," James snapped.
"You know what I meant," Ryan muttered, but dropped the subject.

Chloe grabbed her pistol off the ground and tucked it back behind her belt, she looked towards the window and saw it could be her way out of here. But Chloe instead went the opposite way, and jumped over the beamed and rolled to a stop, a couple feet next to Ryan. Chloe ignored that Ryan had stood up and faced her as she went and grabbed 4x4 piece of wood that wasnβt burnt or damaged. She slid it under the beam James was under and looked at Ryan, not saying anything. βThis doesnβt mean anything Chloe, Iβm still going to kill you.β Ryan said to her as he readied himself, Chloe just scoffing "Don't call me that Ryan."
βPull!β Chloe shouted, barely able to keep the beam up, after Ryan struggled for a second, he pulled James out right in time before the piece of wood snapped. Chloe stepped back and pulled her knife out. βGet the fuck out of my turf.β She told the two boys. She looked at James with soft eyes, basically saying thank you for saving her life. Chloe then ran out the building and texted her family making sure all was okay, getting a text back that they were okay, only a flesh wound to her mother. Chloe ducked in the shadows across the street from the building and out of sight, seeing what the Devereaux would do next.

"Fuck's sake, James, you have too much of a talent for getting yourself into trouble," Ryan muttered. "Pot calling kettle black," James muttered back. "Shut up or I'll make you walk," Ryan said as he pulled James to his feet- or, rather, his one good weight-bearing foot. "Do you want me to carry you?" Ryan yelled over the flames. James knew it would probably be quicker, easier, and safer- but his pride told him no.
"I can manage." They managed to get out of the garage without anything else dramatic happening. His parents were already in the car, the engine going. James knew that if they'd been much longer they probably would have left him there. Whatever about Ryan. Getting into the car was awkward enough, but they managed.
"Christ, what happened to him?" His father asked, the question clearly directed at Ryan. "Pushed me out of the way of a falling beam. I managed to get him back out, but he needs to go to the hospital," Ryan replied. His father went silent. He would never praise James, but the silence said something. "Fine."
The hospital was on neutral territory, and the doctors were very clearly neutral for obvious. But they still knew not to ask too many questions when Ryan helped James hobble in.

Chloe dusted off her jeans and threw her vest in the back seat before taking off down the street, taking the βscenicβ route back to her apartment. She weaved and sped by other cars, her mind racing to what had happened. She had kissed James, and then he saved her from being crushed by some falling debris. Chloe pounded her fist on her steering wheel. What the fuck Chloe. Kill the Devereaux, donβt fucking fall in love with them she thought to herself, rounding another corner before parking her car in front of the apartment.
βUnfortunately, they are all alive. One had an injured leg, another just a cut or two on their arm, heading to the hospital. Is mom okay?β Chloe said as she walked into the main apartment their family used as central operations, they had a doctor made a house call to patch up her mother since it was just a flesh wound. Her father debriefed her of what happened before the gun fire. There was some talk of peace, but somehow Chloeβs older and deceased brother came up, and one of the Devereaux said something that pissed off and triggered her mom, and thus a gun fight happened. Chloe dropped her pistol off and took her knives back to her place, she would probably be up most of the night worrying about James, so she thought she should at least sharpen her knives while up.

He'd had a lucky escape, according to the doctor. A relatively simple, straightforward break that hadn't required surgery or anything like that. He just needed to be put in a cast and on crutches for a while, and see how that went. He'd been kept in a private room, which had been nice. He'd had a bit of time to just think and be alone. And it was nice to just have some peace not not have to do anything. But now normality was returning. His family had never been the type to smother their sons with care. Once they were happy enough that he could move around well enough and negotiate stairs and such, he was let go back to college. Which meant a return to freedom. Against his better judgement, he'd sent a text to Chloe. He hadn't said much. "I still have your bracelet. Coffee? and had texted her the location. It was on neutral ground, meaning they were both a little safer.
He was reasonably sure nobody from the family had seen him going to this particular coffee shop on campus, but he'd still picked a secluded spot in the corner that would still let him see everyone coming in and out. He could never fully drop his guard. Even in neutral parts of the city that were free of violence, it didn't mean that they wouldn't be followed or watched. It would just mean that they mightn't attack.
But Ryan had said he'd do his best to try and get James a little more freedom in terms of being watched. He hadn't said anything yet, but James trusted him enough to know that he'd keep it to himself. They'd talk at some point. But they didn't get much of a chance to talk alone without being overheard, and Ryan was always so busy these days. They needed to talk, just the two of them. They'd find time somehow.

On her way out, Chloe checked on her mother, her arm still in a sling, but besides that she was all good. βHeading to Neutral. Got to take care of something with a contact down at the campus.β Chloe said as walked out, calling a cab. She would occasionally take cabs around Roseville, it gave her time relax and deal with stuff on the phone, and the cabbies knew she tipped big for their silence and to turn off their tracking system. Plus, itβs not abnormal for cabs to be going by the campus, some students didnβt have vehicles, so it wouldnβt be suspicious for her to go there.
Chloe arrived a little past 10 minutes, she wanted to make sure she wasnβt being followed. As she walked into the coffee shop she took a glance around and didnβt see James at first. Worried it might be a trap, but after standing in line for a little bit and ordering a smoothie, she noticed him in a secluded corner and headed over after she got her order. Chloe sat with her back to the door and the rest of the room, she knew James would keep look out, and it would help with her not being recognized as easily. βGlad to see you okay James. Hopefully the hospital wasnβt too rough. Oh, and whatβs with you and coffee shops?β Chloe said with a light smile as she took a sip of her smoothie.
A million thoughts were going through Chloeβs head right now. The first time she saw him in the other coffee shop, she wasnβt sure it was good luck or bad luck she met and fell for him so quickly. When they kissed a couple days ago before chaos erupted. Chloe started to blush a little bit thinking back to the kiss.

[justify]James smiled despite himself as Chloe showed up with a smoothie. He shrugged as she mentioned about the hospital, and laughed a little as she mentioned the coffee shop. "They're good places to talk. Don't look suspicious, relatively easy to talk without being overheard by people, and nobody pays attention to anyone else." He took a sip out of his coffee. "And it has absolutely nothing to do with my caffeine addiction. Speaking of which, no energy drink today?" He asked, grinning at her. This felt too much like small talk, like the other night hadn't happened, with it's kisses and explosions and gunfire. It felt wrong and yet also strangely right.
"I suppose I better give you this after you coming all this way," he said, sliding the bracelet across to her. "Seems much longer than just a few days since then," he added, readjusting the bracelets on his own arm. He knew that she wouldn't notice the scar from this distance but that didn't stop him from still having that vague worry in the back of his head.
"I guess we also need to talk about... yeah. I think we need to talk. About everything," he said, dropping his voice a little. The bunch of girls in the booth next to them seem much to engrossed in their own conversation to pay any attention to James and Chloe, but it was nearly more out of habit than anything else.
"If it helps, I think my family has more or less come to a consensus that maybe bringing me to meetings isn't the best idea. First one I go to and I end up on crutches, and the building damn near burns down. I'm gonna use it to my advantage though," he said, wanting to at least start the conversation off on a light note.[justify]

While James was talking, Chloe just sat quietly and listened to him, giving a light nod when he mentioned talking about everything. But what was there to talk about really? They both had feelings for eachother when they shouldnβt. Chloe gave a light smirk mentioning how heβs going to use the last meeting to try to get out of future ones. βWell, Iβve been to worse meetings to be honest. I try not to get too involved unless things go south. I personally donβt like gun fights.β Chloe paused for a second, lifting one of her sleeves up real quick to show a few scars. βMore of a sharp edge girlβ Chloe gave a light chuckle trying to lift the mood, which this was an odd way to do so.
After taking another sip of her smoothie Chloe continued. βBut I agree, we do need to figure this out, figure us out. What are we supposed to do? Your family and my family donβt mix in this town.β Chloe looked around the coffee shop for a second. βYou sure this place is good? Is there somewhere else we could go. Maybe less public, more private?β Chloe asked, paranoid someone is going to learn about her and James. Which wouldnβt end good for either of them. Chloe knew the Devereaux despised her, especially Ryan. And even though her own family doesnβt personally hate James, they for sure do not like the Devereaux name.
