    his soul aches
cast adrift, sailing on false memories,
inserts of what never was - blinding, fake
his smile plays the part, the loud pretender
but, his soul aches and he has no answer,

    THE CONFIDENT DOUBTER

There's a reason Felix Ljung has been called arrogant more than once, the word hurled his way in an attempt to deflate the confident smirk which twitches across his face. A verbal attempt to maim, pull down one of United's supposed 'golden boys'. In most cases those insults fail, sliding from the thick-skinned man like the first drops of water in a rainstorm. He's a being of self-confidence for a reason, his ego boosted from a childhood of praise, where lessons came easily, and his grades took minimal effort to maintain. He walks with the sure steps of a man comfortable in his own skin, the wide grin on his face both self-assured and welcoming. He's aware of his skills, and accepting of his flaws, and rarely do jealous insults lodge themselves beneath his armour.

Felix was a brilliant child, the kind pushed forward by proud parents eager to brag. His hands knew the piano before he knew the pen; ears could discern a shifting melody and his mind could create the following verse. Then again, that was what he was made for. A copy of the famed composer Franz Liszt, designed to replicate the man's greatness, to better it even. Like Liszt, his parents were musical and played for the ears of the wealthy and famous. He was pushed to perform from a young age, encouraged by a beaming father and ambitious mother. It was during these early concerts that he learned to work the crowd, adding small flairs not only to his performance, but to his demeanour and appearance.

A flair for the dramatic; a desire to wow any audience. Felix's showmanship has developed as he's aged, utilising first a young, boyish charm, and then shifting into an inviting simmer. He flirts with his audience, whether in the concert hall - where he flashes confident smiles, and his fingers play chords with a commanding finesse that saw his original bringing flushes of colour to ladies' cheeks - or at parties - where his gaze, smirk, and murmured words offer promises of a night not easily forgotten. Like most else he does, Felix flirts with the confidence of a man used to getting his goal. He's had more than a few romances, usually short things which burn brightly before his attention wavers and he moves on.

He was fifteen when his father died. Naive to the fact his life was meant to imitate the man he was cloned from, Felix took the lose hard. His fingers refused to create the music his father had loved, his mind stopped creating his early pieces. With his father's death also came the loss of the family's main source of income. he and his mother moved into a small apartment in Stockholm, and the teenage Ljung took up teaching piano to help pay the rent. Though he would often spend long evenings after school ended navigating the city streets between his students' homes, Felix found that teaching helped to soothe the ache caused by his father's death. He enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing his students improving, and their stunned looks when he played a simple tune didn't hurt either.

The long distances covered between his students often found the teenager warming his stomach with alcohol, or inhaling the calming poison of a cigarette. Despite disapproval from his mother, or perhaps in part because of it, Felix has yet to give up smoking or his appreciation of a good alcoholic drink. He's often found lighting up outside between classes, one hand holding the lit stick between his lips while the other artfully ruffles his thick locks. Offering a cigarette or a light to an attractive face is always a good ice breaker, provided the other smokes, of course. At parties he'll often have a drink in his hand, as common as the sight of a grin on his face or teasing arch of his brow. Felix rarely drinks to excess though, enjoying the pleasant buzz of a few drinks over the dizzying blindness of too many.

Though the loss of his father had hit him hard, Felix eventually found himself returning completely to the piano, where the keys greeted him like an old friend. The renewal of his passion for music was fuelled by inspiration from other esteemed musicians. He saw mature violinists play their instrument with such mastery, that Felix returned home with the desire to emulate their talent in the piano. He fell in love with a classmate in the same year; attempted to woo the focus of his attentions with smooth lines (for a teenage boy), winning smiles, and charming offers. However, it was the pretty little pieces on the piano that eventually won her heart. She was the first of many romances, even if their love was short-lived thanks to the disapproval of her father.

Even as his passion flared, Felix's health took a major hit. He grew deathly ill, to the point where his mother feared that she would lose her son only a few short years after her husband. Felix survived, however, and during his recuperation, he set himself to learning all he could of the piano, reading widely, and taking what lessons he could by watching performances of his favourite pianists online. The young man developed his own style of playing, worked on creating pieces of romantic music that built and improved on other classical pieces. The reception to his work only boosted the developing confidence he already possessed, the honours offered solidifying his place as a worthy composer.

It's no wonder that Felix is now a twenty-something young man with a solid opinion of himself. He's arrogant or self-assured, depending who you ask, enjoys being the centre of attention, or amongst a lively crowd, and bares himself with the extroverted ease of a man comfortable among strangers and friends alike. He has the charm to work his way into most strangers' good books, along with an easy smile and witty tongue. Ljung is warm and open with friends, inclusive to all those within his large circle. He keeps a wide range of companions; friends whose company he enjoys, and connections useful for an ambitious musician.

Of course, even as he can count his friends in the double digits, Felix is sure his detractors number in similar capacities. Whether jealousy drives their distaste for him (which is his most frequent assumption), or some interaction has soured their opinion, Felix is not without rivals. For the most part, he pays them little mind. Any insults thrown his way are returned with his own witty barbs, the level of mockery he offers dependent on the person. He views few as real competition, instead claiming them to be disgruntled, envious musicians who crave to best him. He would only consider a few individuals his true rivals in music, and those he usually counts among his friends, rather than his rivals.

For all that Felix presents himself as a young man sure of himself and where he stands, beneath the cocky smile sits the quiet ache that pulls at him when he's caught alone. Felix wants to be his own person, to be independent of what has been predestined for him; the replica life of a man who died centuries ago. He was made to be Franz Liszt, his life's goal predetermined before he'd been born. Felix may pretend otherwise, but beneath it all he's lost. Scared that all he'll ever achieve has already been done, that his mark on the world is merely a sad attempt to mimic the original.
