War is multidimensional,
it effects more than just those in the immediate area, but overtakes all.
The land becomes ravaged by tents pitched and boots marched.
The people are famished by poverty, as soldiers quarter in their homes and eat their wares.
War spans generations, it can inflict wounds that live on for decades.
There is nothing romantic about bloodshed and death.
But there is romance in what comes next.
Families reunited, burying the dead, poems sprout from heroes, and lives that were spared.
And when the flowers blossom where they were once dead, love can begin to grow again.

It was not supposed to be this way, but it never is. War is unpredictable, it is not only a test of strength, but a test of will. In this case, the offendors will was stronger. Messiah sat upon a cracked throne, wearing an ill fitting crown. His faceless face smiled as he greeted in a new era, his pets at his feet, one a witch, the others all demons. In his decree, he ordered that the remainder of the demons repent for their crimes, or be executed at sunrise. Most chose to repent, swearing fealty at his feet. Most of them were cowards. There were only three that were executed, nameless, faceless, they hung outside of the Cascade as a warning for all others to see.

They marched the next spring upon the Tower Society, with their ranks at full strength and their demons at their highest power. Messiah wielded a terrifying force upon the remainder of the humans. He was mighty, they stood no chance and crumbled beneath his fist. The battle took place nearly two hundred years ago and the face of the earth began to change. The surviving humans were used for various means, not food of course, nothing so barbaric. They became slaves and toys, pets used for pleasure or games. They were forced to work in factories, bearing numbers on their lapels and barcodes on their wrists. Few remained in power, but even then, it was conditional underneath the will of Messiah.

They wanted the war, oh how the demons thirsted for it. They said it would unify the countries at last, to rid the earth of the plague called humanity and replace it with something more sustainable. They delivered on their word, the plants began to flourish, entire cities were leveled when there was no one to live in them. Forests sprang left and right, there was food for all, with no human left to go hungry and no demon unable to feed their hoard. The only spats were ones of territory, demons ever-so possessive over what they believed was rightfully their's. There were systems put in place for these things of course, the high court to rule on anything that could not be settled with fists. Realizing it was futile to fight it, the angels began to migrate to earth. Only a very few decided to remain, as Heaven had much more to offer than a land ravaged by demons and their human slaves.

Mercy was not a word in the demon vocabulary. Humans were not to stray far from their owners and owners were to keep track of their flock, least they want their belongings to be taken by another demon.

On the surface, there seemed to be a sense of relative peace. Of course, internally, there was a horrible disquiet. The humans were oppressed and could not resist. They were outnumbered and out-manned, with nothing left for them to do but submit. If their demon task-masters were kind enough, they lived in nicely appointed corridors. Some had homes with families, while others lived in slums built atop one another. There was always an exception, of course, for the humans who had managed to live off of the grid. They had escaped during the first wave of oppression and fled to the woods. They lived in caves with no electricity or running water. Still, some fled to the human paradise called Japan, the only stronghold the demons had never managed to infiltrate.

Ruling with a demon fist, the future of earth seemed imminent, unless, of course, something came to disrupt them.

Her healing magic was weak. It wasn't as strong as someone like Lilim, who could bring someone from the brink of death so long as she arrived within ten minutes. Ophie couldn't do anything miraculous like that. As she wrapped her black starry cape back around her shoulders to hide the wound, it was slowly fixing itself from within. Ophie had a feeling she could cut off Sonata's head and she would heal back up in five minutes, it truly was absurd. The angel could hardly imagine how strong Sonata's healing would be once she got the promotion. No matter what anyone said, Sonata was everyone's favorite for the Baron Exams. There was no candidate that was as strong as she was this decade. They were all once again gathered at the dining hall, and Cal agreed, they should have a doctor check on them.

"It's rude for another Baron to watch the training of Baronlings." Elimine said with a little smile. "I'll take my leave for today, but I'll come visit again." She gave Alice a pat on the head, already fond of the human. "She's really nice." Sonata said, seemingly happy. "I'll show you how to use the toys she gave you, okay?" Baron Pierce watched her leave, sending some of the servants to see her out. What was Pierce's feelings towards Elimine? Someone like him didn't look like the type to care about orientation one way or another. "Don't freak out at the doctor again." Calciferous grinned, snorting as he laughed at his own joke. "I know. He's just doing his job." He was one of the few who was allowed to know Ophie's true identity as an angel. He was the doctor, so it was natural he would have to know that sort of thing.

Rene brought food and Ophie ate it, glad to not have to eat food with human's blood anymore. It still bothered her to watch Calciferous pour human's blood all over his plate, or to watch Sonata dip her sausages into it. The angel observed Alice, seeing that her hands were shaking. Was Alice learning how to use utensils, or was she still in shock from what Katsiya had tried to do? She rose in alarm as Alice fell over but Cal caught her first, yelling her name as the fork went flying. Ophie caught it with her tail, placing it gently back on the table. "The doctor will be here soon." Sonata said to herself, fear in her eyes. "Pierce, he should look at Alice first, okay? Then Ophie, since she can't heal like us."

"I'm fine." Ophie murmured. She was a bit light headed from the amount of blood she lost but she would heal everything back up within the hour. The door opened and the Doctor had arrived. "Alice had a fit of some sort." The angel told him, narrowing her eyes slightly. He took Alice and Baron Pierce stood up to go with him. "Let's go, we all care about Alice." Calciferous said, waving his arm so that Sonata and Ophie would follow after them. "Let's go to the market after we're checked." Sonata whispered to Ophie, touching her hand and Ophie drew her hand back but did not lash out. "We'll get sweets for Alice!" The angel rolled her eyes, sighing. "We could do a shopping trip around the villages." If Alice was cleared, maybe she could come too.

Alice felt tired, but she wanted her food. She was hungry too. She tried to tell them she wanted her fork, but instead she was rushed away from the dining room. Her hands opened and closed, where was Dog? "She's lost a lot of blood," the Doctor said, noting the trail that was dripping from both her front and her head. "I'll test for Acacia's known poisons as well. I should test all of you while I'm at it," they were talking of candies and going to the market. Alice wanted to go too, but her head was spinning, she could hardly move. "It will be alright," Baron Pierce tried to assure her, stroking her head. "You're all going to be fine, Doctor Julian will take care of you all." Alice squirmed, but did not struggle as the needle stuck her. She did not like the sensation, but did not fight it. "Good girl Alice," Baron Pierce praised. "Don't worry, it'll be over soon."

"Pierce about the call earlier I-" Pierce shook his head, gaze falling to the others. Julian nodded in understanding, "Alright you three, roll your sleeves up. I have to test all of you," he put droplets of their blood into a reactive solution, "if it turns purple, it means you've been poisoned." He explained, doing their tests one at a time. "Cal is clear, Ophie, you're clear as well. Sonata, it looks like you've got a strain of it. I'll start you on medicine to clear you up, alright? Knowing you, you'll heal in no time." He gave them all lollipops for being good patients. Alice was beginning to come around, "Hu...ng...ry." Was the first thing she said as she sat up, tugging at the bandages on her head. "No, don't play with those." Baron Pierce chided.

"I'll have Rene bring you, your lunch." He sighed, but was smiling. "I'm afraid Alice will not be joining you at the market, but you three are free to take the rest of the day off." He didn't want to confine them to training, after all, it was important that they bond as well. "O...k...ay?" Alice asked, wanting to make sure no one was hurting, or maybe she was merely echoing what she had heard. The door burst open, Blithe entering, looking worried. "Is everyone alright? I had to wait for Elimine to leave." Being carried by Blithe was Echo, who was rubbing one of her eyes sleepily. "Echo!" Cal jumped to his feet immediately at the sight of her, Echo stiffened when she saw him. "What's he doing here?" She asked through a yawn. "For your information, I'm a Baronling," Cal grinned, tail flickering, it was clear who his heart still to.

Rene brought Alice's food, Alice at last getting to eat her carrots and fish fingers. "I should think you will all make full recoveries." Doctor Julian said after examining them all. Unsurprisingly, Echo was already falling back to sleep. "How long does evolving take?" Cal grumbled, missing the Echo that would snap at him. It was better than a sleepy one, at least. "Change takes time," Doctor Julian said, packing up his bag. "I'll see you out," Pierce offered, rising to his feet. "Watch Alice, make sure she doesn't pull the bandages off, alright?" He said to the others, the door closing behind him. "Pierce, with all due respect, you know you're playing a risky hand here." Julian advised, his tone low. Pierce nodded, "I am well aware Julian. Everything is as I originally suspected."

"It's not too late, you know. It never is," Julian crossed his arms. "You can send them all away, you'd be safe." Pierce shook his head, "I can't abandon hope."

"She'll start asking questions."

"Alice needs me, as do Ophie and Echo."

"And what are you going to do when you can't provide answers? I'm sure you've already noticed it."

"Noticed what?"

"The shadows that are attached to that child."

"Goodbye Julian, thank you for everything."

"Pierce you can't just-" the door closed in his face.

With a lollipop in her pocket Ophie sighed, still wondering why she was here. This was just going to be a troublesome event, wasn't it? While she made a very rare exception for Alice and Calciferous and Sonata and Baron Pierce that didn't mean she suddenly wanted to be all buddy buddy with them. They were good useful allies for her mission, did it really have to be something more than that? "Keep your eyes peeled, we might be able to find something nice for Alice along the way." Calciferous warned her, staring out the window of the bus that would drive them around the county of Amiens, around the farming villages scattered throughout northern France. "We also need to thank Baron Pierce for all he's done for us." Sonata reminded them as she filed her nails neatly. "So let's find a gift for him too."

After the first stop at the first village the three returned to the bus to compare their gifts. Ophie didn't find the villages to be very remarkable. You saw one, you saw them all. The smell of rustic almos medieval France, the countryside free of the vibrant technology that existed all over Berlin. Humans and demons seemed to live and intermingle together, not having any hatred for one another. "Amiens is a great place." Sonata said fondly, holding her shopping bag tight. "Calciferous made sure to raise me to not hate humans. It doesn't do anything to hate another race." Cal nodded, grinning. "Amiens and Spain are some of the only places where humans don't have to live in fear." Sure, they were still technically second class citizens, but no one in Amiens or Spain would abuse them for it. "Then let's hope Messiah never sees fit to strip either Pierce or Elimine of their land one day."

"This is our last stop. La Havre." Sonata poked Ophie, waking her up. The sun was setting, making a brilliant scene before their eyes. "Don't suddenly poke me." Ophie complained, rubbing her eyes, her tails twitching. "Then we'll go back to Baron Pierce's castle after this." They already had their gifts bought, but La Havre was the biggest farm city in the area. It was here that most of the food was being made and exported all over demon-controlled Europe. "Something's wrong." If La Havre was supposed to be a big lively farm city, why were the streets so empty? What was this awful stench? She almost gagged and vomited and Calciferous looked around in alarm. "Stop the bus, something isn't right!" He cried and the bus driver they rented dutifully stopped. "We're Pierce's Baronlings, and we're gonna investigate the area!"

The three of them looked around. There was narry a human nor demon in sight. "It's like a rotting ghost town." Ophie's wings curled painfully, she wrapped her cloak around her and tried to hide her face in it to protect her from the overpowering odor. "We're gonna follow the smell." Sonata sniffed, her tail stiff behind her. "Let us know if it's too much, okay?" Eventually the trio arrived at the source of the awful smell. It was a well, it smelled so awful Ophie could swear she could see the scent coming off of it. "Here goes nothing." Calciferous gulped, looking down the well while Ophie and Sonata peered from behind him. Down the well was corpses. Human corpses and demon soul pieces all crammed into the well, left to rot and fester in the warm summer sun. "We... have to tell Pierce." Sonata's voice was feint as she drew back, gasping. "Someone's killing our citizens."

Alice wasn't upset about not being able to go to the village. After all, there was plenty for her to do at home. While Baron Pierce took phone calls and filled out paperwork, Alice had her own business to attend to. Books and crayons, from Baroness Elimine. Sonata had shown her how to color, now Alice was doing it on her own. Scribbling away, Pierce looked over her shoulder. "That looks very nice. Are you sure you only want to use blue to color in the horse?" He asked, patting her head. Alice looked up at him and blinked, she had never seen a horse before. "I'll take that as a yes," he walked around the desk to sit in his seat. As soon as he looked away, Alice slid off of her chair and went to the bookcase. "Alice what do y-" he looked around, realizing that she was gone.

"Alice? Alice!" A book fell over, startling him. "What are you doing up there?" She had scaled the bookcase, scattering books in her wake. "You're going to hurt yourself," he reached up, grabbing her by the book of the dress and pulling her down. "No snacks on the bookcase," he smiled, picking up the cookie she had left there. "Come on, why don't we see what Blithe is up to?" Blithe had free reign of the house, unlike Echo, no one had been searching for her for the past 200 years, except maybe the other Generals and Zinnia. She was not a wanted criminal, having promised she would not attack after Kitra's death. Blithe was sitting in the living room, knitting. "Blithe, I was wondering if you would mind watching Alice for a bit?" Blithe looked up, already Alice was getting into trouble. She had picked up the ball of yarn Blithe was using and was wrapping it around her hand.

"I don't mind, but what do you want me to do with her?" Blithe was clueless with children. By age five, Zinnia had already been a master of chess and spells. They didn't know how old Alice was and she couldn't even speak. "Bl...i...the..." Alice tilted her head to the side, echoing what she had heard. "She said my name!" Blithe beamed, picking Alice up. "Ah, fine, you convinced me, I'll watch her." Pierce nodded, walking off to finish what he had started. "So... what do you want to do?" Blithe asked, setting Alice down. "Do...g." Alice lifted her toy. "You're right Alice, we should go check on Echo." One of Blithe's tails wrapped around her middle, they went up to the third floor, where Echo's room was.

"It's me, I have company." Blithe poked her head inside, surprisingly, Echo was awake. "You've been up a lot more, that's good. Are you hungry?" Blithe asked, setting Alice down, who ran over to the bed and began to climb on. "Why did you bring the little monkey?" Echo asked, attempting to sit up, but she was weak from sleeping all the time. "Baron Pierce asked me to watch her." Blithe replied, bringing the tray over to Echo. "No, don't touch that," Echo groaned as Alice tried to braid some of Echo's hair, twisting it the way she had seen Rene do. "Alice, no, let's let Echo eat." Blithe placed the tray down, pulling Alice away.

They were returning back to Amiens now, Baron Pierce needed to be made aware that there was an enemy in the territory. There was someone killing the citizens that just wanted to live in peace. This is exactly the reason why Ophie hated demons and humans so much. Angels would never do something as barbaric and evil as stuffing corpses inside a well. She ground her teeth, anger burning up in her chest as she stared out the window. The cheerful mood of the day had turned sour, and no one was happy with the discovery. "Baron Pierce isn't going to be happy." Cal said to break the awkward silence. "He wanted violence to be something kept away from here." Sonata looked as if she were struggling not to cry. "I knew some of them! I grew up greeting them!" When she was a child no doubt she visited the locals here and there.

"Does Pierce have any particular enemies?" Ophie asked, making her voice flat and even to hide how much she was affected. "After all three of us past the preliminaries, maybe we should have suspected something like this." Barons who could train Baronlings strong enough to pass Baron King Messiah's tests tended to become famous and favored in the courts. They became household names, they were given admiration and respect. So the Barons who were unable to create successful candidates, no doubt envy and hatred bled from the wounds in their hearts, longing for the recognition they would have to wait an entire decade to try again for. "Other than Katsiya, everyone was on good terms with him." Calciferous explained, since he would know the politics of the situation better than anyone else.

Ophie sighed, shaking her head. "That isn't helpful." Would Katsiya really risk making a move like this so shortly after being dishonored and kicked off the territory? Ophie wasn't sure, but there were no other real clues right now as to who could have done this. "Really, we should have expected something like this to happen." It was unfortunate, but what could they do other than tell Baron Pierce and have him handle it? Ophie didn't want any dramatic incident to get in the way of their strenuous training. It was rare they got a day off for themselves after all. The conversation fell silent again as the bus arrived near the hill that lead up to Baron Pierce's estate.

The three Baronlings returned, with bags of gifts in their hands, and grim news to deliver. "Here are the presents for our day out." Sonata forced a smile, handing the bags to Pierce. "We decided to buy Alice a few bags of candy full of different flavors, and we bought a new kitchen set for you, Pierce." She beamed, trying to lighten the mood. "And we have news to tell you about La Havre." Calciferous eyed Alice, and Sonata decided to whisk the child away so she wouldn't have to hear about the empty farming city, the humans and demons stuffed in a well to rot in the summer heat. "Someone's targeting us." Ophie said once Cal finished his report. "We should get ready for enemies, Pierce." No doubt Baroness Katsiya was not the only one gunning for him.

Echo went back to sleep after taking three bites of a croissant. Alice watched her, reaching out to touch her. "No, let's not wake Echo up." Blithe lifted Alice away from the bed quickly. "Ch..o?" Alice asked, wondering what was wrong, why Echo was always so sleepy. "You silly girl, Echo's merely recovering her strength." Blithe pat her on the head, "Come on, let's go see what Rene is up to." As it turns out, Rene was busy making the beds. "Hello you two," she smiled, her purple hair glistening in the light of the evening sun that filtered in through the window. They were in Alice's room, watching Rene make the bed. "He...lp?" Alice asked, but Rene shook her head. "No, that's alright. This is my job," she pat Alice's head, the little blonde reaching up to grab her hand and settle it on her hair.

"Why does she do that?" Blithe asked curiously, watching. "I think she likes it when her head is pat," Rene replied, "she's probably never felt affection before now, this is her way of saying she wants more." Or at least, that was Rene's theory. Until Alice could speak in full, her thought would remain a mystery. Alice released Rene's hand and ran over to the slide, clambering up it and sliding into the ball pit. "Man, I wish I had a room like this," Blithe looked around with a whistle. Alice's room was a child's dream. Already, the toys from Elimine had been added to it. "We had to take out the bookshelf," Rene admitted, "she kept climbing it, so we put these in." They were lower shelves, wider ones so that the books could still fit. Alice could still climb them, but she could also get down on her own.

The door outside opened, it seemed that the others had returned. Alice looked up from the ball pit, hearing the front door. "Come on, let's go see everyone." Blithe lifted her out, shaking Alice off so that she did not take any of the balls with her. She waved to Rene as the door closed behind her, Blithe setting her down. "Hey, don't run off on your own!" The demon had to jog to keep up. "No, don't climb the banister!" She sighed, Alice had tried to slide down it. "Come here, stop running around! Gosh, how does anyone keep an eye on you?" Thank goodness the others had returned, Blithe didn't think she could keep this up much longer. "Hello Alice, we're back." Cal smiled, patting her head, Alice grabbed his hand, Cal lifting his arm up to let her swing from it.

They went up to Baron Pierce's office, Alice being given a bag of candies. She looked at it, sniffed it, wondering what it was. "You eat them, come, let's go try some." Sonata took her hand, leading Alice out of the office so that Ophie and Cal could deliver the news. Baron Pierce listened, his expression becoming troubled. "I'll be putting in a few calls now. We'll have to investigate, I'll arrange for further security around the estate as well." He rose from the desk, already planning on putting in the calls. "I have news as well, if you would mind calling Sonata back inside." Cal went to get her, finding her trying to wrestle Alice into a new dress. Alice had no interest in the clothing, she had been trying to climb the book shelf.

"He wants us all," Cal said, rescuing the human from Sonata's clutches. Baron Pierce sat down after finishing his call, "We've been summoned for tea at Baron King Messiah's castle. Tomorrow at noon."

Baron King Messiah wanted them for tea. It hadn't been much time since the tests, but it seems Baron King Messiah wanted to personally see everyone that made it through. Was he going to ask them questions? Did he want to learn about them? Ophie was going to have to work on her cover story to make sure all the holes were plugged. "Let's go let Sonata know." Calciferous said, seemingly easy going now that they were back home. "And don't worry, Baron Pierce will make sure our dead citizens will see justice." Whoever it was that targeted them, Pierce would find them and make sur eit didn't happen again. They were under his protection, every last life within Amiens looked up to Pierce to keep them safe.

All the Baronlings would be coming to Baron King Messiah's castle. Even as Ophie woke up the next day and put on her best white dress, she wasn't sure what to think about it. They were all her rivals, and the angel knew in her heart that she needed to hate them. "But..." The idea of hating Sonata, of hating Calciferous, Baron Pierce, even Alice, as silly as she was, that idea brought unintended pain to Ophie's chest. As much as she hated to admit it, Baron King Messiah had an important job. He was the defacto leader of demons and he kept things orderly and controlled. He managed the natural chaotic impulses each demon had deep inside, and made a working society. If he was dead, would demons once again return to blind chaos, rampaging throughout the Earth? Ophie didn't want to think of that.

No, that wasn't her job to worry about. "I just have to do as my Queen commanded." She murmured, closing her fist, making sure her horns were placed and fixed in place on her forehead. "Okay, I'm ready." She descended the stairs, her naturally red eyes sharp as she gazed at the others who were already ready to head out to Paris. "Geez, you take forever." Sonata bore a good natured smile, she looked like she was doing better now that she had a good rest. Calciferous was grinning, attending to Alice. "What are you doing?" Ophie asked, tucking her wings behind her as she gazed at the lightning demon.

"I'm trying to teach her how to laugh." Calciferous sounded a bit frustrated as he brutally and cruelly tickled Alice to try to draw out a reaction. "None of my jokes so far worked, so maybe I could tickle a laugh out of her!" Sonata blushed a bit and tiptoed out of Cal's arm's length. "He practiced his tickling on me earlier." She admitted bashfully. "I'm really ticklish, he made sure of that." It was Sonata's one weakness - Cal tickled her a lot when she was a baby since he liked the sound of her laughter during the cold dark nights all alone. "Has it worked yet?" Ophie asked with a sigh, shrugging her shoulders, not wanting to be tickled.

"Rene, watch the house," Baron Pierce pulled on his coat, it was a cool spring night, after all. "Where are you going?" Rene asked, holding the door open. "No need to worry, I'll be back before midnight," he winked, the door closing behind him. She locked the door, watching through the window until she could no longer see his outline. "Alice!" Rene called, "it's time for bed." Rene poked her head into the living room, where she had been moments earlier. "Alice?" The little blonde pet was not there. "Now, where could she have gone?" Rene covered her eyes and turned around, smiling as she heard the little patter of feet running from one hiding place to the next. "Uh, uh, no bookcase." She snatched the human up before Alice could scale the shelves and send books everywhere. "Bed time silly," the human did not struggle, but submitted to Rene's grasp.

Alice lay awake in bed, hugging Dog against her. Her life was very different now. Instead of hoses once a week, there were warm baths every morning. There was food three times a day, instead of scraps every other day. She slept in a bed and not a cage, and there were plenty of head pats. Even now, beneath the blankets, it was warm and pleasant. Was it a dream? Alice wondered, afraid to close her eyes. If she did, would she wake up tomorrow, back in the cage? She turned onto her side, the light from the nightlight glittering across the floor. How long would this last? She closed her eyes at last, curling up with her toy tucked into the crook of her arm. How long until they grew tired of her? Or until they played too hard and she broke? Alice had seen it before.

"Good morning," Rene pulled the blankets off of Alice's head. "Mo...rn...in...g." Alice lifted her arms up, Rene picking her up. "The bath is ready and I've got a pretty dress for your tea party today." Tea party? Alice wondered, the dress fluffy and white, with flowers sewn into it. There was a matching blue hair ribbon and socks that went all the way up her legs. "No, no sliding down the banister," Rene scolded as Alice grabbed onto it, about to pull herself up. She followed behind Rene, Baron Pierce not sitting in his chair at breakfast. He was nowhere to be found. Alice pointed to the missing spot, "Don't worry, Baron Pierce will be here soon." He did not show up to breakfast, Alice did not want to eat without him. She waited, watching as Sonata and Calciferous dug in. Ophie was late, but that wasn't unusual.

They waited in the lounge, Alice sitting on the floor, her stomach growling. "Alice, why didn't you eat this morning?" Sonata asked, but Alice only blinked up at her, uncertain of what she meant. "I know!" Cal said suddenly, joining her on the floor. "Let's try to make Alice laugh!" He told what he called jokes, but Alice didn't understand. Suddenly he started wiggling his fingers, as though it were some sort of threat. It felt strange and Alice twitched, attempting to escape. Ophie arrived at last, asking what they were doing. Alice didn't know though, she didn't know what it was like to laugh. Baron Pierce arrived at last, "Well, it seems we're all here." He smiled, Alice jumping up to greet him.

The motorized carriage was waiting for them, a snowflake symbol engraved on the wheels of the carriage. It had a neat design, no doubt created by their very own Baroness Vaswald. Everyone would be arriving, all the Baronlings and their accompanying Barons as well. "Here, have some of this." Ophie said, reaching into her bag to pull out a bag of strawberries. She gave some to Alice, and some to Baron Pierce, and some for herself, since none of them had eaten breakfast this morning. "Why thank you, Ophie." Baron Pierce said, taking his share of the strawberries gratefully. "Here, Alice, you eat them like this." He demonstrated by putting one into his mouth and eating it, enjoying the juice of the fruit;s flavor dancing on his tongue. "Gimme some too." Cal took a few, and gave half of his to Sonata. "I hope I won't be targeted." Sonata said in thought. "I'm the top candidate right now, so I'm the one everyone's going to have an eye on."

Already the placements were being aired on the news and on website internet blogs. Sonata Delanore was considered the most likely to end up winning over the others and becoming a proper Baron. She was the strongest for sure, even Ophie could see that. "We've got your back." Cal said with a grin, patting her on the head. "Alice will keep you safe too, won't you, Alice?" Ophie rolled her eyes at Cal's idiocy. "I doubt Alice could do much of that." She was just a frail human with barely the ability to raise her arms. If an enemy tried to hurt her she would have no way to resist. "Isn't it more likely that everyone looks down on you, Cal?" He almost didn't make it through the portal, he was the last placing of the Baronlings. "Then I'll surprise everyone by surpassing them all." He announced, nodding proudly for some reason.

The tea table was set and everyone was there waiting. At the head of the table Baron King Messiah sat. Then, on the table, the Baronlings sat on one side, and the Baron hosts sat on the other, in order of their placements. Sonata Delanore sat closest to Baron King Messiah's left side, looking prim and proper in her golden dress. Jensen Thrush grinned, wearing a neat suit with America's flag on the tie, satisfied in his second placing. Ophie shrunk a little, not wanting to sit next to him, wondering what to do with her twin tails. Another of Baron Golch's Baronlings who Ophie found was a young orphan named Lancer. His red hair blazed as he stared at the tea. "You drink it. It's a weird European thing." Jensen explained, helping the boy through it as if Ophie forced to sit between them was nothing but air. Lancer glared at Jensen who shrugged. "Just trying to help, kid." He muttered under his breath.

Polaire was picking cake bits out of her teeth with a crystal toothpick, looking bored at her brother, sitting opposite of her. Past her was a girl with strange rainbow hair that hurt Ophie's eyes. "My, this tea tastes exact-tea as expected!" She giggled, eyes shining with mirth. Her name was Jolene, and she was famous for her terrible puns that Ophie couldn't stand. Dean Weber was 7th place, sneaking glances at Ophie with something between jealousy and curiosity in his gaze. Ophie was glad to be sitting relatively far from him. Ayna barely existed in her ghostly form in eighth place, and Baroness Anguis's snakes were playing with the tea cakes, sitting opposite of Ayna. The large imposing Oriental demon, Feodth, was drinking his tea, holding the cup with an expert hand. Last but not least was Calciferous, whose hand slipped and shattered his tea cup, prompting the whole table to stare at him. Really, how could he be so stupid? The fine china looked dejected as it's broken shards scattered about the table, the music coming to a halt.

Baron Pierce lifted her, carrying Alice to the carriage. Alice tilted her head to the side when Ophie offered her red triangles. "St...ra...w...be...rr...y?" Alice held one, it smelled sweet. She watched as the others ate them, avoiding the green leaves at the top. Alice took a tentative nibble, trying it. Juice dribbled down the side of her chin, the strawberry was sweet and crisp. Alice ate another one, holding the stems in her hand until she had a handful. She held them out to Baron Pierce, who opened up the window of the carriage. "Here, we'll plant some strawberries like this," he dumped the stems outside, "in a few months, there will be strawberry bushes there." He explained, wiping up the juice from her chin and hands so that she did not get her dress messy. "Thank you Ophie, for sharing those with us. Alice, what do we say?" Alice turned to look at Ophie, there was a shadow dancing on her shoulder.

"Th..an...k...O...ph...ie." Alice said, Ophie mentioning that Alice could not protect them. She was just a frail, weak, human. Yes, the inferior race. Baron Pierce stroked her head, "humans are resiliant little creatures." He said astutely, "you never know what they are capable of." After all, they had survived this long underneath the Baron ruling. The human numbers were dwindling, slowly, but some Barons were taking emergency action and forcing them to breed. Baron Pierce would never do anything like that and his ruling has allowed the humans to thrive and procreate as they saw fit. "Don't talk down to others," Baron Pierce said pointedly, it seemed that Ophie had developed something of a habit. "And don't forget that you can work together, you don't have to be pit against one another." The carriage came to a halt, it seemed that they had arrived.

"Ah, Baron Pierce," Baron King Messiah greeted. Pierce bowed, Alice looking up at him, wondering what he was doing. "I did not realize you would be bringing your pet along," he knelt down, holding out a sweet in his hand. Pierce watched them carefully, Alice taking the candy, holding it out to Pierce. "No Alice, that's for you." He smiled, Messiah rose. "I'm afraid there are no humans allowed in the ceremony today. Zinnia," the witch appeared at his elbow. "Please see to it that Baron Pierce's pet is kept quiet during the proceedings." She nodded, holding out a hand. Alice looked between her and Baron Pierce. "Go on," he smiled, Alice taking Zinnia's hand. She watched as the others all walked into the tea party room, there was no place for a human in there. The door closed behind them, a shadow stepping out of the corridor. "Oh, look who it is Alice, do you remember Christopher?" Alice looked between them, spotting something even more interesting; a book case.

"What is she-" they both scrambled after her, pulling Alice down before she could fell the books from their places. "No, no, come, let's go visit somewhere nice." Zinnia took Alice's hand, pulling her away. She looked back at the book case, which was ever so tempting. Christopher followed them, Zinnia taking out her special key. She entered it into the lock of the first door they came across, opening it up to reveal her home. Alice looked around, recalling the space. She placed Dog on the table, Zinnia had a book case too, but before she could go for it, Christopher intervened. "No, none of that for you. Let's have our own tea party," He lifted her up, placing her on one of the chairs. There was a shadow dancing behind them, it reached out to Zinnia's hair.

Alice's eyes widened as Zinnia cast a spell, bannishing it. "You saw it too?" Christopher asked, Zinnia nodded. "They've been lurking around the child," Zinnia replied cautiously, they did not know how much Alice knew. "S...ee?" Alice asked, surprised. "I'm afraid they're thestrals." Zinnia explained, bannishing another one. "Only those who have seen death can sense them. They attached themselves to people, clever things, and use their shadows." Alice did not understand any of that, but the shadows finally had a name. She was not the only one who saw them. "Zinnia I don't think-" she nodded, understanding what Christopher meant. "I've already said too much, come, let's enjoy our own tea party."

Ophie was not having fun at the table in the slightest. "So, now that we've had our tea, let's begin the ceremony." Baron King Messiah stared at them all, standing up to his full height. There was a pregnant pause as the others were no doubt waiting to pass out from the drugs when he let out a laugh. "Don't worry, there are no drugs this time. None of you will pass out." Calciferous still looked somewhat embarrassed as he chuckled. "Good, I thought I'd be in trouble for breaking this cup." He chuckled, grinning. Baron Messiah looked at him from the far end of the table. "Well, you will receive one punishment, Calciferous Graves." He said, making Cal flinch. "You lose 5 points." He grinned, a sigh of relief. "Well, it's only five points." Sonata suddenly raised her arm.

"Yes, Sonata?"

"What are these points for?" She asked, her eyes sharp with intent as the question left her lips. Baron Messiah seemed pleased that she picked up on that. "Well, as you all know, there are only five Baronlings that can partake in the Baron Exams every decade. That means there's going to be a process to how we determine the top five Baronlings who will undertake the Baron Exams five months from now." Everyone was tense as they listened in. "Only a pro can beat the process!" Jolene the clown demon giggled, earning several groans from around the tea table. "That's right. You all will receive points, and at the end of each month, one of you will be eliminated. In the end of the five months, there will only be five of you left."

Suddenly servants came up from behind them, attaching mechanical tags onto their wrists, each one with a number on them. Ophie glanced at hers, seeing that she had eighteen points on her tag. "All of you have points in relation to your placement on the test earlier." Sonata had twenty points to start with, and it went down by 1 for each placement until Calciferous, the tenth place, only had ten points. "Wait, I only have five points!" Cal said suddenly, realizing how serious this was. "I'm way behind now!" Everyone listened carefully, since now they wanted to know how to gain or lose points. "Points are gained in two ways: if you do something to help benefit demon society, you gain points. If you protect demons from outside threats, such as mages or vampires, you gain points. If you can fight another competitor, you steal their points."

So you could fight to get points? Ophie gulped, wondering how that would work. She wasn't sturdy like others, stealth was her only real trick to keep up with these dangerous beasts. "You lose points if you displease me, or if you break rules, or if you lose a fight against another competitor. The tags will track all of that for you." All the competitors stared at one another, already strategizing how they would do this. Sonata was the prime target. If anyone could beat her, they would get all twenty of her points. "Now, the tea party is dismissed." All competitors were to remain in Europe until the Baron Exams were complete, or until they were eliminated. Hotels were provided for the Baronlings who lived abroad, and Ophie wondered if most of the fighting would happen in those hotels. She would need to work together with Calciferous and Sonata to survive this new game.

"The tea should suppress it," Zinnia spoke softly. "Yarrow root can mask auras," Alice didn't know what that meant, but she liked the tiny cakes shaped like stars and the tea was sweet, like apple juice. "Do you have any guesses?" Christopher asked, taking a sip of his tea. "No, I already know, I sensed it the moment they brought her to me. I'm surprised Messiah hasn't noticed it yet." Alice looked between them, reaching for another cake. This one was dark on the inside, with pink frosting. "That's called chocolate," Zinnia said softly, watching as Alice munched happily on sprinkles. "Ch...oc...ol...at...e?" She asked, her mouth covered in crumbs. A napkin floated by, wiping at her mouth. Alice looked away, not wanting it to touch her, but the napkin was aggressive and took all of the sprinkles off of her face.

A knock sounded at the door, Doll poking her head in. "Oh look, it's our little friend," she smiled, joining their table. "Is the party over?" Christopher asked, arching a brow at her sudden presence. "No, I needed to sneak away, it was growing boring in there." She closed the door behind her, "they should be done soon though." She took a seat and grabbed a cake, Alice watching her curiously. "Hello little one," Doll waggled a finger at her. Alice grabbed her hand, holding it up and placing it on her head. "Yes, you're a very good girl," Doll smiled. The door opened again, this time without a knock. The tea party had ended, Baron Pierce arrived with his three Baronlings. "I hope she wasn't too much of a handful," he said apologetically, not having realized that they wouldn't allow Alice into the tea party.

"I would like to go with you," Zinnia rose, surprising them all. "Will Baron King Messiah allow you?" Doll asked, nervous. He hardly let Zinnia off of the property and usually, only with an escort. "I'll ask him, it's been almost five years since I left. Would you mind waiting for me?" She inquired, Baron Pierce shook his head. "Go on, it would be a joy to host you for the evening." She nodded, disappearing with a puff of smoke. Alice rose, running to the bookcase almost immediately. "No, not this one," Cal grabbed her. "We can start talking strategy in the carriage," Sonata offered, knowing that Ophie was probably nervous about this new test. Only five of them would get to enter the exam, after all. "Pi..er...ce!" Alice chirped, struggling to get out of Cal's arms. "Oh look at you, that's the first time you've said my name." He reached for her, Alice settling comfortably in his arms.

Zinnia returned, using the door this time. "He says it's alright," she smiled, looking slightly relieved. "Oh good, we'll take the carriage then." Alice had nothing to contribute to the conversation, but she did try to give all of them some of the stickers Zinnia had given to her. They smelled when she scratched them and Alice wanted to share them. She gave two to Ophie, noticing that Ophie seemed tense. When they reached Baron Pierce's estate, Zinnia took a big breath in of the fresh, country air. It was only once they had stepped inside that Zinnia glanced around, her expression changing considerably. "Now, can you tell me what in the world you are doing with an Oracle?"

It was time for the three to make a strategy. "You really let us down." Sonata said to Calciferous, frowning. "How could you let yourself lose five points! Weren't we supposed to all make it together?" With Calciferous down to 5 points, he was very easily the most likely to lose and drop out at the end of the first month. "We can't give him free wins against us." Ophie said, thinking. "Since we'll lose our points." It was all or nothing, you couldn't just give points over. "I'm sure we could do some community work and get points peacefully." Sonata said, but Calciferous had a different idea. "All I gotta do is beat up the other seven, right? There's one in particular I want to beat up." He grinned, not disappointed in the slightest. "I'm gonna show them not to underestimate me!"

With so much to think about, they were given another bombshell as Zinnia Evernight revealed what Alice's true identity was. "Oracle?" Ophie muttered in surprise, staring at Alice with a frown on her face. "You'd think I'd be able to smell that. I'm such an embarrassment to angels." Sonata giggled, seemingly entertained by Alice's identity. "It's because she's around us all the time, so she would have a demon smell on her." Calciferous looked shocked as he glanced at Zinnia. "Uh, she means angel cakes!" He laughed nervously, slapping his knee. "She knows." Ophie said to spare Cal the humiliation. "Zinnia always knew from the start." She was a witch who met angels, of course she would be able to see the truth. Cal blinked and nodded. "Yeah, I knew that! I was just testing you, silly!"

"Alice, you're an Oracle." Sonata said kindly, playing with the tiny girl's hands. "That means sometimes you can see visions of the future. Do you think you can tell us what you see?" Alice couldn't communicate very well yet but Sonata wanted her to understand what her role was, what she could do. "That way you can help us succeed in our training." Sonata's talking to Alice was interrutped by Cal laughing at Ophie. "Stickers don't go on your face!" He jeered, pointing at her forehead. "I think it's okay." The angel decided she would keep the animal stickers on her face because there was no reason to remove them yet.

There was a knock at the door then. "Reporters." Rene said, ducking her head in. "They want to interview Sonata and Ophie." Calciferous raised his hand with a smirk. "Me too! I'm a candidate too!" Even though he was last place didn't mean he was out of the count yet. "And Calciferous too." Rene corrected, nodding. "Should I let them in, Pierce?" Ophie wasn't sure she wanted to be broadcasted. "I don't think we're ready for an interview yet." Sonata muttered. "But they'll keep pestering us until they get it." Cal seemed eager for the press though, despite the other two not wanting to be part of it.

Baron Pierce's smile never faultered. "I should have known you would have sensed it," he placed Alice on the ground, who had covered him in scented stickers. "I wanted to wait until she could understand just what she was." He looked at their shocked faces, Alice wondering what all of them were so surprised about. "I've been giving her yarrow root every morning to disguise her scent," Baron Pierce admitted. "I apologize, I didn't mean to keep it from you. I had the Doctor confirm it with a blood panel." He knelt down, patting Alice's head. "The truth is, I've been looking for her for a very long time. Imagine my surprise when she turned up right under my nose." He looked at each of their faces, Ophie seemed upset that she had been unable to detect the difference. "I had my suspicions," Zinnia said, crossing her arms. "It was why I gave her the seeking stone."

Alice of course, was none the wiser. She sat down on the floor, wondering why everyone was standing around. Sonata knelt down, telling Alice that she was an oracle. "Or...ac...le?" She repeated dumbly, wondering what that meant. "I don't think she's been activated yet," Zinnia spoke softly as Sonata asked Alice what she saw. "Once an Oracle knows their potential, they can typically control the flow of their visions." Of course, normally Oracles were apprenticed as soon as their identities were confirmed. They were sought after, but the last Oracle that had belonged to Constantina had passed. With the magical world sealed up, Alice had no one to teach her what it meant. "If Yue were alive..." Zinnia trailed off, but she would not go down that train of thought.

"Fi...sh?" Alice held up Dog, offering it to Sonata. "No, that's Dog." Sonata smiled, Rene entered, informing them that the press were here to interview them. Baron Pierce, sensing their unease, rose. "I have an idea, Calciferous and I will go speak to them. You ladies can go and enjoy the evening until supper is ready." Calcifer jumped at the opportunity, of course, he wanted some screen time. Alice rose, attempting to follow Baron Pierce. "No, no, no. You stay here," Rene smiled. "I think someone upstairs would very much like to see all of you." Rene turned Alice around, who reached for Baron Pierce, but he was already walking through the doorway. "I've set up some snacks, if it should please you." Rene said, closing the door behind her as she disappeared, following Baron Pierce.

Alice looked at her sticker sheet, but she had run out of stickers. She handed Zinnia the paper, wanting more. "Watch," Zinnia smiled, waving her hand across the paper, summoning more stickers. Alice's eyes lit up in delight, she flapped the paper happily, bounding over to Ophie to give her another sticker. "Let's go upstairs," Sonata suggested. "We can strategize up there on how to get Cal some more ponts." Alice followed them, almost forgetting Dog and running back down to grab him. She clambered up the stairs on all fours, like an eager puppy, stickers in one hand, Dog in the other. There was someone waiting for them on the third floor. Arms crossed, tails swishing, Zinnia froze, her heart hammering in her chest. Alice watched curiously as her eyes welled up with tears. "Blithe!" The two practically collided against one another, their hug was so tight and so fierce.

It had been two hundred years since they had last seen one another, able to sense the other, but never crossing paths. Alice wanted a hug too and so, she clung to Ophie and Sonata's legs, watching the tearful reunion between master and familiar. "It's been so long," Blithe whispered, hesitant to relinquish her grasp. "Too long," Zinnia agreed. Blithe opened up the door to Echo's room, ushering them all inside. "Just how many fugitives is Baron Pierce keeping in his home?" Zinnia inquired as Echo sat up, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She had been awake more often than not as of late, which was a good sign. "Oh, it's you." Echo yawned, sliding out of bed. Her hair was braided behind her, Alice running to play with it as soon as she saw it. "No, no, none of that!" Echo was bigger than Alice, which wasn't saying much, but it was nice to be taller than someone.

"I would answer that question," Sonata scratched her cheek, "but I don't quite know myself."

As Baron Pierce and Calciferous set off to handle the press, Ophie followed the others upstairs so she could watch a very tearful reunion between familiar and Master, after far too long. Sure, Rainarch brought letters back and forth between the two, but it wasn't the same as meeting in person, face to face. Ophie clutched at her soul piece, knowing she would never get to see Katua again. Even with the magic of witches, Katua's piece was broken beyond fixing. Queen Levi shut the doors to the magical world so Zinnia would never be able to return home, and no one would be able to help and guide Alice on her personal journey of growth as an Oracle. There was a lot that could have changed, if only Queen Kitra hadn't died at the battle of Cascade Bau two hundred years ago.

"Oh, okay." Ophie took the sticker from Alice and decided to put the star over her nose this time. She forced a grin and sighed, suddenly feeling exhausted. "I look like a clown, don't I?" While Zinnia and Blithe had their tearful reunion, Echo was waking up. Naturally the angels marked Echo as another person of interest so as an angel knight, Ophie knew about her circumstances as well. She went over, bringing Alice with her, and looked at the newly waking up Echo. "You probably don't remember me, but I'm an angel knight." She said simply, looking at Echo's head in particular. "How is your head? If you need, I can buy you time with my magic." Blithe looked over in surprise. "We were gathering pink shards to stall, but if you can do it too, that'd be very helpful, Ophie." Maybe Zinnia could concoct a potion to help as well while she was here?

They needed to think of a way to save Cal and keep him in the running for the race. "What problems are there in the realm right now?" Sonata asked Zinnia. Because Zinnia lived in the capital in Paris, she would know the primary ins and outs of the demon realm. In the end, Ophie and Sonata both took down notes to decide on their next step. "There's a boat on the seas that kidnaps young demons to smuggle them out of our realm to danger." Sonata said, looking at the list. "We'll get community points if we do this." If they could find the boat and save the kidnapped demons they could end this demon trafficking scheme once and for all.

"Cal will probably have to land the last hit on whoever's in charge of selling demons." Ophie muttered, figuring Baron King Messiah wouldn't be kind enough as to allow multiple Baronlings to gain community points from the same target. "You and I have enough points to last for now anyways." Sonata said with a smile. As first place and third place in the running, they were both in a good spot in terms of points for the time being. They shouldn't get complacent though, there wasn't much time left at all. "Seriously, he's always causing trouble." Ophie groaned, rolling her eyes. "You know you look silly with those face stickers." Sonata giggled, pointing at the silver haired angel's face. She groaned, keeping them on. "It makes Alice happy so it's whatever." The muttered bashfully, hands twisting under her starry cloak's folds.

Alice shook her head, Ophie did not look like a clown, or at least, she did not believe so. Zinnia was crying, Blithe was too, Alice did not understand why, but then again, she hardly understood anything. She was dumn, she knew, her head was empty. She watched everyone around her, wondering what she was missing. She was starting to understand more, of course, but she was still slow to figure things out. Ophie brought her over to Echo, who was stirring, waking up once more. "I remember you," Echo replied, rubbing her eyes, trying to get the sleep out of them. "I remember you lurking behind Celeste a lot..." Echo trailed off, looking up at the ceiling. "How is she? Probably not good. She was never... stable up here," Echo tapped her forehead. Alice mimicked the motion, wondering what it could mean.

"My head's fine," Echo grumbled. "After she... nevermind. The Doctor that Baron Pierce hired said everything looked alright up there, he wasn't immediately worried." Echo yawned, she didn't want to go back to sleep so quickly, but it was hard to fight the fatigue. Zinnia looked between them, "I would need to know the problem before I could help," she offered. "But if Messiah finds out who it's for, he might demand me to take him to you. In which case, you would need a plan of escape and a way to make certain no blame falls on Baron PIerce's shoulders." After all, Baron Pierce was kind, she wouldn't want him to get in trouble for hosting them. Zinnia turned towards Sonata as Alice ran over, waving her sticker sheet. Echo had been decorated in scratch and sniff stickers.

"Here you go," Zinnia waved her hand over the sheet, summoning more stickers. Alice went immediately to Blithe, "No!" Blithe yelped, jumping out of the way. "Those things will cling right to my fur!" Alice looked at her, wondering what she meant. She placed the sticker on Blithe's pants, looking up at her. "Alice just wants to share," Sonata said apologetically, pulling her away. Alice placed a sticker on Sonata's cheek. She had just been saying how silly Ophie looked with the stickers on her face. She drew Alice onto her lap, the little human squirming until Sonata released her and she was free to run back towards Echo, who was staring out the window while Blithe tried to feed her and Zinnia attempted to evaluate her.

They were all so busy, Alice thought. They weren't paying attention to her, this was her chance. She placed Dog and her stickers down carefully, running to the bookshelf. No one was watching her, she clambered to reach the first shelf, from there it was easy to get to the top. The bookshelf did not so much as sway, not a book fell from place. Alice happily sat herself down on top, swinging her legs as she watched everyone.

Queen Celeste in her glorious beauty, smiling a radiant smile that could light up all the suns in the world. Oh, if only she still had that smile, then maybe everything would be better than what it was now. "Not well." Ophie admitted with a harsh exhale, shaking her head. When was the last time Celeste had been able to show the world her smile? "Not since 200 years ago." When Queen Kitra's head was delivered to her home in Heaven, how could Celeste possibly find a reason to smile again after that? Her paintings became more erratic and frantic, more draped in madness and despair. Ophie couldn't say more than that though, she didn't want to risk anyone finding out her mission. She was here to take Messiah's head as Celeste requested, if the demons found out they would definitely stop her.

"Echo has Moia moia. It's brain smoke, her veins get thin so it's hard for them to get blood across." It was a rare human affliction but Echo suffered from it too. She knew about it due to being an angel that was made to observe several key people during the events of the Third Impact. "If there's a potion that can keep her veins healthy that wouldn't get you found out..." Naturally they couldn't let Zinnia expose herself and get Baron King Messiah's watchful eyes settle on them. He was already curious as to how Baron Pierce was able to get three successful Baronlings, a record no one else had been able to beat thus far. Ophie could use her angel magic to try and help too, but she wasn't as good at it as the Angeal family was.

Allowing Zinnia and Blithe to tend to the waking sleeping beauty Echo, Ophie glanced up to find a very strange sight. "Alice! Be careful!" Sonata cried, alarmed at the little Oracle swinging her legs from up above their heads. "If she falls we can catch her." Ophie said, deciding not to be worried. She sat under the shelf so if Alice were to fall the silverette could easily catch her before anything serious happened. She used her finger to scratch at her stickers, feeling a little itchy where they were attached to her face. "And think of how surprised Pierce would be if he saw her up there." A little bit of the prankster in the angel was coming out of the shell, but only a little bit.

It didn't take long for Baron Pierce and Calciferous to come upstairs to meet up with them. "How did the interview go?" Sonata asked glumly, staring at Cal who grinned. "I think I did good! There were a lot of questions. They want to come back another day to interview you two." Cal showed off his tag with a triumphant gleam of his fanged teeth. "I earned three points for doing the interview! It looks like answering the questions counts as a community improvement thing." It made sense, it helped the news stations flourish since everyone was interested in the eligible ten Baronlings after all. "We decided to hunt down the demon trafficking ship." Sonata told Pierce, a boat that sailed the seas, stealing weak demons left and right whenever they landed at shore to sell them and take them to places unknown. "Cal will get points if he kills the smuggler."

Zinnia listened, running her fingers through her hair in thought. "Nothing comes to mind that might help, but that doesn't mean I won't try." She had plenty of books she could look through once she returned. If the magical world wasn't closed off, she could have consulted Madame Pomfrey, but that was no longer an option. "Listen, Ophie," Echo started, she was sitting on the windowsill now, the fresh air good for her, or something of the sort. "When you return to Heaven... I want to go with you." Echo looked at them, serious. "I'm sick of Earth, this place has gone to hell. I can't even go outside 'cause I'm considered a fugitive. I miss... I miss Heaven." Alice watched them from her perch on the shelf. "I agree," Blithe said, "I don't know how much longer Echo will last here. I can finish my Baron training under Pierce."

"Baron Training?" Zinnia inquired, confused. Blithe nodded, "I want to become a Baron and make you my Apostle. Then... you won't have to serve him anymore," Zinnia reached up, touching Blithe's cheek. "The last time someone tried to do that the person I loved died a horrible death. I would hate to see the same become of you." Blithe's tails only became rigid, "I'm not going to let him have you any longer. I don't care if I have to turn you into a demon or-" she looked at the white streak in Zinnia's hair, then at Ophie. "Take Zinny to Heaven with you. She can become an angel, a full one this time and he won't control her anymore." Zinnia rose suddenly. The door opened at the same time, Baron Pierce and Cal had arrived, returning from their interview. "Rene, please inform the chef we have a guest for dinner." He said before closing the door behind him.

"Hope we aren't interrupting," Pierce looked around, glancing at Ophie on the floor, then upwards at Alice on the shelf. "My, my, who let you up there?" He reached up to bring her down, handing her Dog and her stickers. "She tried to climb one of the bookcases in the castle," Zinnia added. "And one of the ones downstairs," Blithe chirped. Alice picked up Dog and began to peel stickers off of the sheet, sticking them to Baron Pierce. "I think she's just exploring, now that she's stronger, she wants to know what's up there." Baron Pierce surmized, allowing Cal to take over as he described how the interview went. Sonata explained the mission that they hoped to undertake.

"Alright, I give my approval. I trust you three have learned enough about teamwork that you can do this together." He hoped that he had taught them as much. Alice clambered onto his lap, holding up a sticker. "I think you've decorated me enough. Zinnia, don't give her anymore, or we might find ourselves covered in stickers when we wake up."

The angel's expression was soft as she listened to the request. Echo wanted to go to Heaven, she no longer had any attachment to Earth that would keep her here any longer. Not even her sisters was enticement enough for her to remain here. "The Angeal family likes you, so it wouldn't be impossible." But for Echo to live permanently in Hell would be quite the undertaking. Ophie would have to really put Gabriel in a good mood to allow for that. "Mages aren't technically supposed to be able to get to Heaven." Zinnia was a bit more a complicated an issue. Mages were bound to the cycle of reincarnation that recycled their souls in a way closer to nature rather than the spiritual way human souls went through Heaven or Hell. "The only way is if Zinnia becomes an angel."

Well, Ophie couldn't go back any time soon anyhow, not unless there wasn't an emergency that requires her and Laertes to return home to Heaven and put their missions on standby. Baron Pierce and Calciferous came back from the reporters, and their little family was whole again, at least, for the time being. "Sounds good. Those guys seem like they need a beating." Cal punched his fist with an eager grin. "Let's go! I'm already ready!" Ophie rolled her eyes and Sonata sighed. "We'll set out tonight and arrive by morning. If my calculations are correct, the smuggling ship's next pickup point should be Norway." Norway was as of yet unclaimed territory, just like how Prague was. There were rumors of an old demon who lived there, caring for traumatized and damaged young demons but that was just a rumor, there was no way Elliot could still be alive after being stabbed through the chest by Doll.

As everyone sat at the table, ready for dinner to be served, there was a sudden sound, and an awful smell. "S-someone, please help!" There was a cry, Ophie knew that voice, it was one of the villagers. She stood up, not realizing Sonata and Calciferous also ran to check what was going on. A demon was riding a horse, though he was badly wounded, burn marks all over his body. He was dying, could they save him? "Miles..." He was an innkeeper in northern Amiens. "There's someone... killing everyone! I only just barely..." He coughed, blood spurting out his mouth, dribbling down. "Speak quickly. You don't have much time." Ophie muttered, her eyes narrowed. "Someone... a d-d-demon..." She shuddered, going pale.

"It'll be okay. Just tell us what happened." Miles gulped, fear in his eyes as he felt death creeping up his spine. It took every last bit of life he had to get on the horse and ride to Baron Pierce's castle. "The people... we all were... crying... begging... Baron Pierce, why won't you... come help us? Why won't he... save us?" Tears struck Sonata's eyes and Cal balled his hands into tight fists, white with tension. "A demon with... a lantern... full of power... we didn't stand a... a chance..." Sonata grabbed Miles, holding him gently. "Let's take him inside, maybe there's a chance someone can save him." A demon with a lantern. There was only one Ophie knew of. "Let's ask Blithe how to fight Frey. We don't want to get trapped in the lantern too." Cal shook his head, sparks flying off his fists. "We don't have time! Our villagers are dying as we speak! We have to get going now!" Before Ophie and Sonata could say anything he ran off into the darkness, jumping onto the horse and snapping the reigns. "What an idiot."[/color[ Ophie sighed. "I'll chase after him. Sonata, get the info from Blithe and make sure he's cared for, then come for us, okay?" She spread her wings, dark and leathery in the evening sky, her tails stiff behind her as she took to the air.

Baron Pierce rose when he heard the cry, standing behind his Baronlings as the villager, Miles, begged Baron Pierce to protect them. "Frey," one of the former Generals. Baron Pierce removed his outter robe, handing it to Rene, who was standing worriedly by the doorstep. "I'll go too," Blithe offered. "Sonata, stay here. Frey is not a foe that can be beaten easily." Ophie and Cal had already hurried off, much to Baron Pierce's dismay. He would have prefered that they remain here while he went to take care of this disturbance. Alice watched from the window as they rushed off, it was only her, Zinnia, and Echo now. As well as the human staff that Baron Pierce emkployed. "Would you like me to bring dinner up here?" Rene inquired, poking her head into the room on the third floor.

"Yes, I suppose we'll have it here," Zinnia spoke up, since Alice didn't know why everyone had suddenly left. "I'm going downstairs a moment," to see to that villager, Miles. Now it was just Alice and Echo, there was no one there to stop her from climbing the book shelf. "No," Echo said suddenly, as though she read her mind. The demon slid off of the windowsill, kneeling on the floor where Alice was sitting. "Ec...ho?" Alice asked, wondering what she was doing. Echo snapped her fingers, a tiny fire lighting on her finger tip. Alice's eyes widened as she watched, "hold your hands out." Echo instructed, Alice did as told. Echo dropped the fire into her hands, Alice jumping in surprise. The fire did not burn her hands, in fact, it was pleasantly warm. Her eyes twinkled with curiosity. "You're like a baby," Echo admired. "Have you been living under a rock this entire time?" Alice blinked, not understanding.

Zinnia returned, subtly wiping the blood off of her hands. "How is he?" Echo asked quietly. She had been sitting on the sill when he had arrived. "There was nothing I could do. His throat was torn out of his neck." She had done everything she could to comfort Miles the demon in his final moments. Alice watched the two of them, the flame in her hands going out. She held her palms out, asking for more. "Only if you say it," Echo told her, hands on hips. She was feeling sleepy again, not having used her power in a long time. Rene arrived, setting places at the table for the three of them. Alice clambered onto one of the chairs, looking at the other two. They ate in silence for a bit, Alice ocasionally glancing out the window, fidgeting as she waited for Pierce to return.

After food, Echo went back to sleep, climbing into bed. She was off before her head hit the pillow. "I guess it's just us two," Zinnia rose, "come on, why don't we go to your room?" Alice took Zinnia's hand, shifting uncomfortably. She picked up Dog and her stickers, leading Zinnia to her room. "This is nice, an improvement from the testing clinic." Alice's eyes widened, "re...me...mb...er?" Alice asked, taking a step back, slightly fearful. "I remember it, yes. That day is one of many that I regret." Alice took Zinnia's hand, willingly this time, and led her to the ball pit. "Li...ke...th...is." Alice climbed the ladder, sliding into the ball pit. "Yo...u..tr...y." Zinnia was surprised, but nodded, climbing up the ladder to slide into the ball pit.
