Strengthsimpressive memory (which aids in her studies, and also in her holding of grudges) | skilled pianist, and has a pleasant singing voice as well | arguing and debate | cunning (perhaps not the most admirable quality, but a strength, as far as she is concerned) | confident (at least outwardly) | brave (almost to the point of arrogance) | (actually, definitely to the point of arrogance) | intelligent (perhaps not to the degree of the academically 'gifted' students, but her grades are certainly nothing to sniff at) |
Weaknessesa double-edged sword, her bravery falls into an arrogance that is sometimes falsely placed | overly proud | struggles to let go of grudges | has a weak hold on her powers when in strongly emotional states, which is dangerous to both herself and those around her | gets exhausted/tired easily | a lightweight when it comes to alcohol | overly prideful | prone to saying things in the moment that she regrets later | terrible at cooking and baking |
Fearsbeing exposed, and revealing any hint of vulnerability- she is someone who takes pride in her cold exterior, her seeming immunity to being shaken. The thought of losing that, and being 'weak' in any way terrifies her. She is also terrified of losing the few people she actually cares about, or worse, being rejected by them. Hence, she is extremely protective, and also keeps the number of people in her close circles to a minimum. Less risk, that way. Finally, she gets slightly claustrophobic, and is quick to grow anxious when feeling 'trapped' or stuck in a small, enclosed space. She prefers to avoid elevators whenever she can, and in situations when such a move is obvious, she has to 'shut herself out' a little, putting music in her ears or closing her eyes, or fighting to think herself away from the situation.
Secretsin many ways, her fears are her secrets, for she keeps them hidden away in a bid to appear as undaunted as possible. Her other secrets, however, include but are not limited to her assault at the hands of her cousin when she was twelve (her reaction the final straw in her and her mother's disintegrating relationship). Every time she cries is another secret, for she forces back her tears or hides away before such an act is witnessed. Not that she cries often.
Personality{ manipulative, ruthless, charismatic, indomitable }For all her manipulative tendencies, Petra does not fear honesty. She can be brutal in her comments, particularly when her patience is wearing thin or she has found a point of disdain for whomever she is engaged with. Just as often, however, her insults are veiled; poisonous remarks delivered with an equally venomous smile. She is a viper of a girl, and does not hesitate if tempted to bite. Often, it is sheer ruthlessness driving her, for when a goal is in mind she tends to act with a dangerous and often merciless ferocity. Even when her confidence is absent, a facade is there to mend the gaps, and keep the truth of her vulnerability hidden. She is a talented liar, and knows how to put on a good show when necessary.
When around those she truly cares about- and they are few and far between, she's far softer. Still cool, and quick to bite, still frightened of being weak and dedicated to maintaining her pride, but softer. Her walls are just a little less high, a genuine laugh a little quicker to pass her lips, a true smile a touch faster to her face. She is a creature of chaos, prone to continuing the mess to maintain her own strange type of stability, but loyalty and trust is precious to her, and it is the one thing she prays retains its security in her constant discord.
As dark as her personality might seem, there is a strange magnetism to Petra- a confidence that is almost addictive in its flow. She radiates a natural charisma that charges a room, and incites fascination. Her confidence helps her to feel at ease when the centre of attention, although her aura is just as quick to unnerve as it is to intrigue. When her emotions are kept in check, as they are, more often than not, her words are pure silver. She has a sharp wit and a deadly charming eloquence that aids her in both casual conversation and in the manipulative machinations that she occasionally involves herself in- typically for vindictive purposes. Her humour is also a tad dark at times, although she enjoys the lightness of banter and raillery, and doses of teasing sarcasm and dry humour. She is quick to tease, far more playful around her aforementioned friends.
Even more fearsome than her powers in perhaps her will, for she is seldom intimidated and never broken. She is frightening when she wants to be, and it often seems as through fear is a foreign concept to her, for all the unease she reveals in her character. She is most fearsome when protecting herself and those close to her, and the latter are a particularly dangerous thing for anyone to consider harming, and would be even if her powers were nonexistent.
Likesscented candles | having the last word | cool-toned lipsticks | chocolate anything | minimalist tattoos | adrenaline | bravery | red wine | powerful people (not in the sense of money, but in the sense of character- imposing, impressive people delight and intrigue her) | vindication | her abilities (...sometimes) | winning | horror films (Carrie is a personal favourite, and she left the dvd out once intentionally- her mother was rightfully unsettled) | overcast weather | thunderstorms and rain | feeling protected (although she'll always insist that she can protect herself just fine) | stargazing | museums, libraries and art galleries | minimalism | independent films | hot showers | playing the piano (and the sound of the piano, in general) | quiet moments of pensiveness | classic literature
Dislikesher mother (a feeling decidedly warranted) | criticism, particularly when it is especially harsh, or lacks constructivism | her abilities (...sometimes) | conservative views | bigotry (say what you will about her... but she's far from discriminatory; she hates everyone equally) | her own shortcomings and insecurities | 'night worries' | corruption | medical dramas | ignorance | small, enclosed spaces | unnecessarily 'gendered' products | peanut butter | crowds | the taste of beer and cigarettes (although she does smoke, every now and then)
BiographyPetra's life is one divided into two parts- before her powers surfaced, and afterwards. Prior, her life was decidedly pleasant. Born to decidedly wealthy parents (though not quite to the degree of her 'influential' classmates) she seldom had material wants. Her mother, Joan Kingsley, is a best-selling author and life coach, whilst her father, Lance Kingsley was, before his passing, a renowned plastic surgeon often hired by top celebrities. He died when Petra was only four, after a long and silent battle with depression.
Following Lance's death, Joan remained decidedly close with her in-laws, continuing the carry the name Kingsley, and act as a member of the Kingsley family (she'd long since grown estranged from her own family, due to a history of emotional abuse that she would eventually grow to replicate). Lance's death hit Petra hard, and she never quite recovered from the grief. Or so she claims, in yet another one of her best-selling books, which remained on the New York Times Best-Seller list for a solid three months.
Before her powers emerged, Petra's relationship with her mother was fairly tepid- they weren't extremely close, and Petra tended to branch out towards others for affection, relying on friends as opposed to family. Her in-laws were caring, though, and spoiled her rotten, but turned a blind eye to her mother's occasional emotional negligence. When her powers, emerged, however, what was previously a habit of brushing off and ignoring turned into a propensity for cruelty. Petra's powers terrified and disgusted her mother, who considered them something unnatural and unholy. The woman became colder, and more angry, prone to constant put-downs and increasingly high standards. Petra became an unwelcome guest in her own home, and this treatment only worsened when, at thirteen years old, Petra's nineteen year old cousin was staying with them for Thanksgiving. He attempted to assault her, and her powers reacted defensively, throwing him against the wall with force enough that the action fractured multiple bones. Her mother was enraged, and punished her severely. Petra never told her mother the reason her powers reacted in such a way- but she didn't need to. She was and is well aware that her mother already knows- she just doesn't care.
Despite the morbidity of her home life, Petra fit very well into school life. Although not as wealthy as her 'influential' classmates, her familial fame coupled with her cool and ambitious nature had her fit in rather well with the privileged and powerful. Her circle of friends is small, but her influence is great, and she finds that, despite her tendency to act blase, she loves her time spent at the school far more than she'd ever openly admit.
