HEIGHT
      169.5 cm

WEIGHT
      55 kg

HAIR COLOR
Salt white with hints of mercury.

      E Y E COLOR
Pewter, save for times when his beast nature surfaces his left eye shifts crimson and ebony. (Heterochomia) Indicating partial loss in tempter. When both eyes bleed red however, he's sunk into primal instints and rage.

      GENERAL APPEARANCE
Zero's stark-white hair distinguishes him as a Kryæll. It's a trait carried down his entire blood-line. Although he seems human it's his distinctively heavy aura that sets him apart. Humans react to this sense with fear, instinct-driven to keep away. The aura or his eyes mark his otherworldly nature.

Zero favors minimalistic black clothes. Sometimes opting for white shirts to his dark ensemble. Always well-fitted, easy to move in. When he's casual he'll done simple shirt paired with straight jeans, boots, and a leather coat. Formal events that require his presence he'll dress in high-end suits.

Despite his youthful appearance, Zero features perpetually stoic if not apathetic expressions. He's endured harsh conditions enough to numb him. If something amuses him he may crack a rare smile.

“ I'VE MADE MORE MISTAKES THAN I CAN COUNT.”

      PERSONALITY
          ALTRUISTIC ✧ BRAVE ✦ COMPASSIONATE ✧LOYAL ✦ TOUGH

ZERO IS silent and observant. More so toward strangers. He maintains distance and takes time to "warm up" to people or even otherwolders. Since his loss he'd become too numbed to care. Acting out on raw instincts, until clashing with Dr Atarashi. The doctor trained him in self-restraint. Specifically toward his beastly nature quick to strike at the slightest trigger. At heart, a curious and gentle nature Zero still desires family, friendships, and normalcy. Adjusting to the outside world comes with its challenges. He's gained a reason to stay strong and fiercely protect what's his.

If things affect him at a personal level, he'll reverse these changes. As much as he can.

Zero possesses an undying loyalty, comradeship, and protective nature toward his closest confidants. He is capable of empathy and gentleness.

He craves stability at heart, often times he'll maintain a strict schedule if not subconscious repetition in his desire for normalcy. Living with doc has reminded him of life before losing his family. It comes easier to keep up this routine. However his demons creep up from time to time. He'll sleep "it" off, when drinking isn't an option or keep busy to not think about that past. He's full of riled emotions that have no where to go.

      LIKES
LITERATURE - BOOKS HAVE always been around. Unlike E-readers, he enjoyed the feel of a new book in hand, the turning of pages, the letters beneath fingertips. His most fondest memories were picking up novels at his reach, snuggling with Ren, and reading. When his parents were either too busy or weren't around, he'd read to Ren. At current, he still adores great literature.
ALCOHOL — His only way dealing is through a bottle of Jim Bean or Bourbon. If he can get his hands on it.
MUSIC — Especially classical music. He enjoys reading while listening to works crafted by human minds. His parents were avid collectors of the arts and "illegal" works banned by the otherwolders within the community.
KICKING ASS - ONE OF HIS less pleasant yet practical memories involved his physically engaging in fights. To defend himself, or someone else, he won't think twice in throwing punches. Especially when he's on edge. Not to say he'll purposely pick fights, but any chances that arise where he feels the need to get his word across through force he won't hold back. He can't help it.
ASSISTING - NO MATTER THE TASK, it could be as mundane as changing a light bulb or listening to someone vent— whatever it is Zero would be more than obliged to help. He likes to feel needed (won't openly admit to the fact) but the mere action of someone requesting him happens to make him feel like he belongs. Day or night, just say the word and he's there.

      ImageDISLIKES
THE OTHER SIDE - HIS DARK SIDE so to speak. It writhes in him, unwinding like a poisonous snake. Always hungry for the negative spectrum of everything. It want to shred what remains of his psyche—that is if he allows it.
HIS PAST — He's been taking the hits since he was eighth. One night of festivities turned to horror, and the next thing he knew he'd been forced to do the most vicious acts that he still deeply regrets and can't forgive himself for.
LOSS - DURING HIS TIME in captivity Zero had lost not only his younger brother due to the conditions he'd been subjected to, but half of his soul he could never regain.
ABANDONMENT —THE DEATH OF his parents had left him vulnerable, alone and furious. It's something he's attempting to solve with Ren.
FEAR — HIS INNATE DOUBT and recurring nightmares perpetually brings him down. He doesn't ever want to feel vulnerable or have his will disregarded so he skates from the things that may threaten what he's desperately clinging. It's like he's always walking on eggshells.

      X

      TALENTS
WITS - LIFE ON THE STREETS has been a tough teacher but if it taught him anything it's to be quick on his feet, and even sharper in the mind.
LOCK-PICKING - AGAIN THE STREET lifestyle can be cruel and on more than one occasion he's b&e but only for the simplest reason as requiring a place to sleep and scrounging for food.
HOLDING HIS OWN - IF THERE COMES a need for him to use more than his two fists in a fight, he'll opt for his own mutant-vector limbs that can destroy virtually anything.
SURVIVING - NOT SO MUCH a talent as it is an utmost life essential. He won't ever give up on life despite how battered he feels inside. When push comes to shove he'll choose to live over death. There is hope, it may be small but he'll strive for a better end to his life.

      FLAWS
SELF-SABOTAGE - SURE BEING FOSTERED has turned his craptastic world into a near paradise but he doesn't allow himself to drop his guard, much less enjoy the luxury around him. It won't last.
SELF-HATRED - He couldn't protect his family when he needed to most. He hates the monster in him. The darkest parts he can't control.
SELF-SACRIFICING — He'd sacrifice himself for someone he cared for. If he could trade places with Ren that night, he would have.
RAGE — His inability to snuff out his fears and anxieties manifested into anger. If not handled well, he lashes out. Mostly when he feels threatened.

      FEARS
Instability Notable by the burst of his vectors. If he gets too excited, agitated, or feels threatened they will strike.
Isolation —Zero can't stand feeling lonely. Sometimes he'll need his space, that's different, but going off lone wolf isn't his thing. He needs that connection to at least one person.
Reckless — With the little know-how of what his power is, much less fully grasp its use beyond chaos, Zero has a hard time controlling his vectors once he's gone full beast mode. They strike with little hesitation and he can't pull back on a hit. So he only whips out the tentacle-like weapon as a last resort—life or death.
CONFINEMENT - SHUT INTO A cage half his life can really set one up for a dread of anything cramped and constricting. He abhors cages and tight spaces, would rather spend the night on the streets than be subjected to that horrible reminder.

“A DREAMER IS ONE WHO CAN ONLY FIND HIS WAY BY MOONLIGHT, AND HIS PUNISHMENT IS THAT HE SEES THE DAWN BEFORE THE REST OF THE WORLD.”

      Image
      Image
      Image
      Image
      POWER
His power is more of a weakness than any real strength. The use of his vectors limit how much stamina he has to maintain them. They function similar to limbs, but with the control of trying to use your least less dominant hand to complete a task with little precision. It's embarrassing and frustrating as hell so he'd rather not display them for this reason. He is aware however that retraining himself is the only way he can ever learn to control.

      WEAPON
His mutant vectors. They can slice, pound, block (sometimes) and even grasp certain objects.

“IT IS EASIER TO FIGHT FOR ONE'S PRINCIPLES THAN TO LIVE UP TO THEM.”

      FAMILY + HISTORY
His parents, Nefale and Aleron Kryæll were both extremely affluent scientists. They worked hard to keep their lives and family together. Their unorthodox jobs meant they had to relocate often. As well as adopt sobriquets in order to protect their identities: Kisaragi. Whilst they were living "on the road" Zero the eldest son desired papa's strength and determination. He tried to keep a brave face. He received some training under mother's guidance when she had time to teach, but it never fully developed. When "home" which was anywhere and nowhere, Zero always looked out and cared for Ren. Kept company when parents were away, read him stories, played games. For a short couple of years, life was relatively steady until one night they were attacked.

Other Darklings in black equipped with charged weapons killed both his parents or so he believed. They ended up taking Zero and Ren to an underground facility.

Day and night he'd been kept in dog cages, stacked against others—but at least he was never parted from Ren. Every time he used his vectors to attempt an escape he was caught, injected with something called inhibitors, beaten, and starved. Then hauled back into his cage. It was the case for every one of them that attempted breaking out. Ren would often offer up the slop he was fed which Zero guiltily devoured. Still, he persevered and promised his brother they'd escape, the both of them.

Weeks turned to months, and his attempts were in vain. The repeated abuse to his vectors, however, reduced their effectiveness and when he was thrown into the "Pitt" to challenge other creatures of his kind, he completely rebelled by not participating. It was his brother down there waiting for him, believing in him that pushed him to keep going. The fights required that two opponents battle it out until only one remains standing—the loser dies.

          Zero never killed anyone.

Yet he never lost a fight. He made a vow not to kill, he wanted to "beat" the system. He shared this vow with his brother. Through the weeks they formed a semi-solid friendship with the other kids and teens that with either no family or ghosts. Much like he and Ren, existing without ties to the world.

Then it came time for Ren to fight, he was paired with Kira a young girl, and a being. Zero begged them to stop. No one listened.

          Ren never returned.

When Zero faced Kira he couldn't hold back. He killed her and anything else that happened after that was a blur. Soon Zero found himself back on the streets. He must have been deemed broken since he only fought using his hands, he'd lost full control of his vectors. Just like a misguided ghost he existed but barely. Lower than a pest, sneaking into houses to avoid the freezing winters, stealing supplies, drinking himself numb when he could get his hands on alcohol often times dumpster diving for meat, rats—grave digging for recently dead humans when the agonizing starvation nearly killed him.

Then he was spotted one night, Dr Atarashi arrested by the kid's similar otherworldly nature, took him into his wing and fostered the being into his grand estate. At first he had been too numb to fully grasp his new life, but slowly, he found himself adjusting to the idea that his life before just may be left in the past.

[ Dirty Paws | Of Monsters and Men ]

Dɪᴀʟᴏɢᴜᴇ Cᴏʟᴏʀ ✦ #66CDAA || Tʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛ Cᴏʟᴏʀ ✧ #008B8B

It was the same reoccurring nightmare, the one where the body hung from the rafters of the attic, a makeshift noose tightened around the being's throat; her body half eaten. There was another Being in the room, his hands and mouth covered in blood and a sick smile twisted across his lips as he turned and reached for the human. A scream ripped from Doll's body, her eyes flying open as she sat up in bed, panting. Someone grabbed her and forced Doll back into a laying position as she clawed at the air, yelling for the person not to touch her. "It's alright, you're alright. Nothing here is going to hurt you Loretta," her real name. It was something given to her by the first Being she had encountered, a sweet older one that had died once Doll was of age to be placed in a zoo. Only one person knew what it was and that was Master Atarashi.

The tears in her eyes began to dry, leaving a sticky feeling on her face. Thankfully the office she was made to sleep in until she could share with Rose and Sara was sound proof; or at least it muffled whatever noises were made in this space. Dr. Atarashi had brought Doll here on the grounds that he could heal her better in a smaller, safer environment but like every other Being's home she had ever been to, Doll was no guest. She was a pet and as far as owners went her new one was not the worst. "Why don't you get ready for the day?" Dr. Atarashi suggested quietly, releasing his hold on her since Doll had seemed to calm down. The blonde nodded her head and sat up, wiping the remnants of tears from her eyes so that Kiku would not see that she had been crying.

Today the outfit laid out for her today was a blue dress with a white apron. She recognized it as a story book character but the name escaped her. Doll shut her eyes and tilted her head, attempting to remember who it was but to no avail. She sighed and ran a brush through her long locks, braiding them quickly and exiting the room. Doll tugged at the collar around her throat, the lights blinking every few seconds to ensure it was on. The thing only had to functions, to keep track of her and ensure that Doll couldn't leave the property. The collar was a safety measure due to the events of her first day on the estate. After the initial shock of moving wore off Doll had gone into hiding. She hadn't left the estate, she just hid in the gardening shed behind a tall pot of unplanted tulips; scared to death after Zero's interrogation and being bombarded by questions.

Doll entered the kitchen, the humans had a separate eating space and only ate in the dining room when invited. She was either the first to arrive or was so late that the others had all eaten, Doll wasn't sure but one glance at the clock across the space indicated it was still morning. "Morning Doll," the Atarashi's chef said, waving his spatula in greeting. "Good morning Grell," Doll replied and sat at the table, delighted when he put a plate of eggs with cheese and vegetables in front of her. The human dug in, eating her fill rather quickly and taking a swig of water. Should she wait to see if the others would come? Or go up to Kiku? Doll fidgeted in her seat as she thought and decided she should face her Master.

She walked up the two flights of stairs to his room, hesitating as she raised her arm to knock. "Kiku?" Doll tapped her fist against the door twice before opening the door a splice to peek inside. The room was dark, the blackout curtains drawn shut. Should she come back later or wake him up? Was he even in bed? Doll couldn't tell as the room was pitch black. She stepped inside, fear quickly crawling up her spine. Doll stepped out once more and shut the door, sliding against it until she was sitting on the ground with her arms around her knees. She would wait out here where it was light, yes that was a much better idea.

It would be incorrect to say that Thanyos was an early waker or a late sleeper. See, that would assume that he had regular sleeping habits. Much to the chagrin of his father, mother, and Zero, Thanyos seemed to reject all logic and slept whenever he wanted and wherever he wanted. To make matters worse, he never slept for more than five hours in one stretch. The night before he had been up for most of the night, entertaining himself by plotting and playing a few games with Kiki. But eventually the younger boy had to sleep and Thanyos, left to his own devices, had watched his favorite action movie ever: a human movie from more than a century ago called Top Gun. He had fallen asleep about halfway in, curled up on the large couch with a massive pile of blankets around him, and that was how he woke up in the morning.

Yawning and stretching much like a cat, Thanyos sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. He glanced at the television, which was playing (on loop) the menu for Top Gun. He grinned and was about to hit play when his stomach rumbled.I should get something to eat... The being sighed and rolled off the couch, landing quite comfortably in the pile of blankets that had been kicked off while he slept. Turning the television off, Thanyos didn't bother to clean up after himself before walking to the kitchen. None of the humans were there, though the cook was preparing some of their food.

"Morning. Have any of the humans woken up yet?" Thanyos asked, honestly curious. Part of him hoped that his own, Rosalinda (but everyone called her Rosa) was awake. She would generally play his games and she was fun to have around when Kiki was too busy with his own things or, even worse, wanted to read. But Grell told him that only Doll, Kiki's human, had woken up so far. "Thanks. I'll have to pay her a visit." Thanyos honestly liked all the humans (even Atticus, who was a bit annoying but was also fun to have around) but he liked playing jokes on them because, unlike Zero, they couldn't do anything back to him. It was just easier.

After grabbing a handful of chocolates (Grell didn't mind as long as he ate his meals too) and the equivalent of an energy bar, Thanyos dashed up the the stairs, well aware of the noise he was making and not really caring. It wasn't too early in the morning and his siblings needed to wake up soon anyway. Kiki's room was on one of the highest levels of the mansion and it took two flights of stairs for Thanyos to get there. Doll, unsurprisingly, was sitting on the ground waiting for her being to wake up. Thanyos adopted his usual smile and waved at her.

"Morning, Doll. Waiting for my brother?" Thanyos asked, stepping closer. He knew that she was one of the more… nervous humans and didn't want to scare her. He had the funny idea that, once he got to know her better, she'd join him and Kiki in their pranks. Rosa too, but Thanyos had the feeling that it would be harder to convince her to join them. Doll was a little easier to convince of things. "Did you sleep ok?" Thanyos added after a moment, not quite sure what to say to help keep Doll calm. Usually he just interacted with his siblings after all.

"The world isn't so bad if people were thankful for the fact that they're alive. Then again, are you really alive? Are we living, or simply surviving?"

[ Snow Song || Hatsune Miku ]

Dɪᴀʟᴏɢᴜᴇ ✦ #00A99E
Tʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛ ✧ #0054A5

Sara awoke to an empty room, the sunlight and faint sound of chirping birds being the only thing to assure she was awake and not still dreaming. It seemed Rosa had already woken up and left. Not at all surprising, since the older girl usually woke up early. Sitting up, Sara sighed lightly and carefully got up, keeping her eyes on the floor as she stood. There had been countless incidents with her previous Master leaving tacks by her bed for when Sara got up in the morning and she hardly wanted to go through that again.

Much to her surprise, the outfit that had been laid out for Sara to wear that day wasn't the odd orange and brown uniform, but instead her own personal clothing that she'd picked out before. It was definitely more comfortable than a skirt, and so she quickly dressed in the black shorts, white tank top, and teal blue sweater. She'd also been gifted a pair of black leather boots, which she actually loved, despite being terribly frightened when she'd received them from Mistress Atarashi.

When Sara entered the kitchen, the smell of sweets and pastries was overwhelming in the decently small room. It was also quite warm in there, much to her discomfort. "Good morning, Sara." Grell was happy as usual, and Sara nodded a greeting to him as she took a seat, slowly eating the food he'd set out for her. Looking over to Rosa, Sara was impressed. The redhead was concentrating hard on whatever she was cooking and the younger girl assumed she was helping Grell with his chores. Sara thought it was very kind.

Grell left only a moment after Sara had finished eating, and since Rosa was occupied, she made her way out of the kitchen and started to look around. It was still early in the morning, and Sara made it a point not to wake anyone, whether on accident or not. In order to adhere to her self-set rule she commonly spent the mornings in her room drawing or walking around the house, admiring the art on the walls and the scenery outside. Granted, it was probably rare for a human to care about the little things while still being a slave...

Sara had never really thought of the situation as slavery. With her previous Masters? Definitely. But with Zero? It wasn't really slavery, he let her do what she wanted most of the time. He was quiet like her and because of that the two rarely spoke, despite spending most of their time together. He hadn't ever hurt her, nor yelled at her, not even raised his voice. Things were peaceful. In all honesty, Sara feared his siblings more than him. Especially Fuko, with her fearful aura and that God-awful gleam in her child-like eyes.

Looking around, Sara noticed that she'd grown bored of seeing the same paintings every morning, and so instead she traveled up the stairs to find her Master's bedroom and see if maybe - a hopeful maybe - he'd already be awake.

“I AM NOT THE KIND OF BEING WHO COULD BE YOUR FRIEND. AFTER ALL, I'M NOT HUMAN, AND YOU'LL NEVER TRUST ME.”

The Monster | Eminem

DIALOGUEᴇ Color ✦ #853c41 || THOUGHT COLOR✧ GREY

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Zero Kisaragi gripped the bars of his cage only to shrink back when the electrical wires snapped at his contact. So they'd upgraded his little prison with electric voltz for all the times he'd tried escaping with Ren and always got caught or found days later. He glanced across at his brother who was in his own cage, laying on his side. The boy's sunken gaze averted his, the once chubby, cute face all angles and sharpness, bones protruded from his skin, and why wouldn't he be? Zero was in the same condition along with everyone else trapped in their little prisons. Alone. Helpless.

"Zero."

Ren barely whispered the name.

"Yeah?" He sent back out of habit.

"Overalls wants me to kill."

"No!" Zero inhaled sharply through his nose, whiffing awful smells. Smells he'd grown used to.

Ren's gunmetal eyes so much like his own gazed back, wide and yet resolved. "You know what'll happen if I don't."

Zero shoved his hand through the bars winced at the sharp lance of agony shooting up his arm so that he could reach Ren's cage. Rattle, rattle.

"We made a promise remember?"

Silence.

"Ren, hey, we're gonna get outta here. I swear. Just hold up a little longer. I'll get us out."

The new girl across from him begged for help, preyed, but Zero felt too ashamed to tell her no one would. She looked just a fragile, but life still colored her skin. Maybe she had a fighting.chance. Maybe not.

Kids around then moaned and wailed, mostly from pain or hunger. Last night, Zero only had slop, he hated the bitter taste but always licked his bowl clean. They weren't given spoons. They were kept in dog crates, just like dogs and never let out, not even to use the bathroom.

But at the sound of the metal rod striking against iron and reinforced steel bars, Zero tensed and sat up straight, his mind dizzy and stomach burning from nothingness.

"Time for another round my little mutts." Their Keeper, a squat man in old overalls and a face hidden behind a torn leather mask walked down their aisle. Rod with a million Volta of electricity in one hand, two dog collars in the other. He hesitated before their cages.

He turned to Ren's cage and popped it open, reached in a meaty hand, wrung the collar around Ren's scrawny throat and yanked him out. The boy stumbled on shaking limbs.

Then Overalls turned to the praying girl who shrieked when he wrapped her in a collar and despite her fear she came out on her own, still strong enough to move freely.

"Try your freaky powers on me and I'll cut you up." He gave his back to Zero assured he wouldn't do anything.

"This--isn't right, girls are never pitted against boys--stop!" He pounded bony fists and weak vectors against his confinement but wasn't able to break out. His vectors shrinking from the shocks, more sensitive, raw.

"You don't give me orders brat, it's what the crowd wants. They get."

He dragged Ren and the girl, Kira away.

Zero strained to listen as the fight took place above, he knew when it started when beings shouted instructions like, "Rip his vectors off!" and "Cut her face off!" He trembled with fury, fear, and pain waiting for the outcome.

And when it finally came he--

Zero's eyelids popped open.
Barely able to catch his breath as the nightmare receded, he realized he was drenched in cold sweat, his body on fire. He did a quick scan of his bedroom. He was alone. His thick black-out curtains were drawn, and the only light source was the crimson pulsing from his vectors.
His vectors. Shit! He jackknifed to his feet and studied them. The extra mutant limbs were raw from his determined suppression, jerky. Again.

Scowling, he wrenched his eyes over his bed. Despite durable sheets, both flame-retardant and tougher than cotton, he'd left singe marks behind. Some of the material was also torn in some places. The wall had been nearly smashed, plaster littered the bed, dusted his head.Gotta get a grip on this thing. His heart drummed erratically against his ribs, blood molten in his veins.

Zero hated dreaming about his past, the one after he'd been taken away from his parents. Especially hated the particular memory. At least you didn't dream about the next night.

With a deep intake of breath he pulled in the vectors with effort, then let it go. Shaking with still raw nerves he lumbered to the bathroom so he could shower off another restless night. With quick precision he dressed in a black shirt and jeans, paired with boots and a comfortable flannel shirt. A little better now he slipped out his room silent as night.

The way his smile grew was making Doll even more nervous. What did he eat that would make him grin like that? Doll wondered if it was human. It was illegal to eat them nowadays but that didn't stop some. When Doll was in the zoo she had heard about black market deals and sometimes humans would disappear, never to be heard from again. The thought sent shivers down her spine, but Doll did not give away her displeasure. She would remain perfectly pleasant, or at least try her best not to break down in front of the Beings. Doll did not want them to know how weak she truly was. The human didn't know what Rosa's relationship with Thanyos was like but the boy sounded quite fond of the human. The blonde hoped that in the future she and Kiku would grow that close.

"No, I'm afraid I haven't." She shook her head at the unfamiliar sounding movie, flinching when Thanyos moved closer to her. "That sounds nice, I would greatly enjoy watching with you all." Top Gun? What an odd name, but Doll wasn't going to judge considering what everyone called her. The door opened from behind, if Doll hadn't been leaning forward she would have surely fallen backwards onto the floor. A set of arms wrapped tightly around her middle, pulling Doll to her feet. Thankfully she had grown accustomed to Kiku's way of greeting people. She was still not used to being touched unexpectedly but Doll had mentally prepared herself as soon as the door opened.

"No, he wasn't bullying me, w-we were just talking about movies." Doll quickly came to Thanyos's defense, attempting to keep her tone light and to not sound defensive. Doll couldn't help but stifle a giggle at Kiku's statement. Fuko was a bit scary, from what Doll had seen of her she was not one the human would associate with. Zero on the other hand... Was just as scary. He was quiet, as though he were silently plotting and waiting to strike. Doll tilted her head to the side at the question that was aimed at Thanyos; whose next? A target? She glanced at the sleeves of Kiku's shirt, perhaps that was why they were there?

"Oh yes, I would very much like to be included." Doll replied cautiously, wondering if they were going to get in trouble for whatever the two boys were about to do. She could hear Zero and Sara down the hall, it seems the two had just woken up. Perhaps they were the target? Or maybe it was Atticus and Fuko? Doll smoothed down the white apron of her dress and waited, hoping she wouldn't slow them down and that they wouldn't mind her company.

"Hey."

Sara was grateful that she hadn't woken her Master. She'd had bad experiences with little mistakes like that, and it wasn't the nicest thought she could've had at that moment in time. Sara was grateful that Zero was such a calm person. It helped her feel more at ease, and she never seemed to feel uncomfortable in the shared silence that often surrounded the pair.

There were voices sounding down the hall, and Sara concluded that most of the others were awake. At the moment Thanyos and Rosa's voices were the most prominent, and if she listened closer she could hear Kiku. Judging from Kiku's words she assumed Doll was also with them. I wonder what they're all up to... Probably another prank.

Sara began to wonder why no one ever seemed to punish the two boys for starting so much trouble. There had been a prank almost every day since she'd started living with the Atarashi family, yet neither of the parents seemed to pay any heed to the wild antics of their children. Then again, Beings weren't Humans, so perhaps they just didn't mind it all.

"Sara walk with me."

Sara snapped from her thoughts and rushed to follow Zero, who was walking off down the corridor. He had his cell phone out and seemed to be calling someone. Her suspicions were soon confirmed.

"Grell, yeah it's me, what are you preparing for tonight's dessert?"

A small hint of surprise crossed Sara's face as she unintentionally eaves dropped on the conversation her Master was having. Zero simply didn't seemed to be the type of person who would enjoy sweets, so it was slightly confusing as to why he'd be calling Grell to ask about tonight's dessert.

"Red velvet, appetizing, mmm, go ahead and continue that as planned but there's also something I'd like you to do for me. How familiar are you with the Coconut Haupia? I hear it's a Hawaiian favorite."

Haupia? Sara recognized the term as a Hawaiian food, she'd read about it in a book once. It was apparently a coconut dessert made out of coconut milk and sugar. She wondered why Zero would be asking about it. Was it secretly delicious? She'd never been able to try it before and in this moment she'd become curious. Guess all that's left to do is wait...

Sara silently listened to Zero and Grell's conversation as she followed her Master downstairs. After a while, she realized they were talking about sabotaging Thanyos' next prank, which Zero somehow knew about. Sara didn't really know how frustrating the pranks could be, since she'd never been the victim of any of them. Perhaps the others had a different opinion.

The two stopped when they reached Dr. Atarashi's office. Sara had never seen the inside, as the room was strictly off-limits to the Humans and most of the staff. She had observed Zero entering the room several times before though, so she assumed he was allowed in. He didn't seem to be the type of person to blatantly disregard the house rules.

"Sara, you're free to join me on this or not, it's your call."

Sara wasn't quite sure whether they would get in trouble or not if they planted laxatives in the cakes, but she didn't really have anything else to do, so she followed Zero into the room. It was dark, but large and very neat. The multitude of books made Sara wish the area wasn't restricted to her, she could spend a lifetime in here and not ever get bored.

Turning back to Zero, Sara noticed him saying something but didn't catch what it was. She heard a click, and then Zero pulled a laptop out of one of the desk drawers, so she assumed the phrase must have been a password or something similar. Soon after, images of every room in the manor were visible on the hologram screen, Zero talking about his plans the whole time.

It was fascinating to see all the different places in the house. Some of the rooms Sara didn't recognize, which meant she hadn't seen nearly as much of the manor as she'd thought. It was definitely a big place. None of the bedrooms were shown, which made sense, even though it meant they would have to keep a closer eye on the halls for sight of the group.

"Um...why are we going to put laxatives in the desserts? Wouldn't that be just as bad as one of Thanyos' pranks?"

Sara hoped she wasn't asking stupid questions. The answer seemed obvious, considering how many times people around the house had been stolen from or doused with buckets of water, but she still felt it was a bit harsh to make them suffer with lazatives as a punishment. Perhaps they wouldn't be so rowdy if their parents kept a closer eye on them...

Dɪᴀʟᴏɢᴜᴇ Cᴏʟᴏʀ ✦ #66CDAA || Tʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛ Cᴏʟᴏʀ ✧ #008B8B

"Kiku... I-I'm scared. I-I don't know what's going on." Doll said into the camera as soon as the gag was removed from her mouth. She wasn't sure how long she had been here, there were no windows so she had no sense of time. All Doll knew was that she had to go to the bathroom and that Grell was dead. His blood still stained her pajamas, Doll had been standing close by when he was shot. The two had been tracing constellations in the garden when a bullet met his head and his blood sprayed onto her. Doll had screamed and was quickly kicked in the side. She hadn't been killed because killing humans was illegal and somehow the government always knew when one of them died so they had taken Doll and she wasn't sure what her purpose here was.

Tears ran down her face as one of her captor's snaked his hand down her shirt. "I sure am going to have fun with my new toy," he said into the camera, removing his hand and pulling at a strand of hair that had gotten loose from her ponytail. He sniffed it greedily, watching the lens that was supposedly a live feed to the Atarashi household. "Anything else you want to tell your dear master?"

"It's a trap!" Doll screamed as tears continued to flow. "Don't come! They're going to hurt you!" She felt the butt of a gun hit her head again and the chair toppled over, leaving Doll on her side. They rushed to turn the camera off, leaving a quick message that they should come with the requested money if they ever wanted to see her again. Doll was glad she had warned him, she would do it again if she had to. "Stupid human," Doll was grabbed by her hair, the one in the panda mask gripping her locks tightly and pulling Doll up. "I'll make you regret that," panda mask whispered, dropping her. Doll couldn't catch herself because her hands were tied to the back of the chair and so she fell to the ground once more, her jaw connecting with the concrete. "You won't get away with this," Doll growled. She was feeling rather brave after that although she was still shaking.

"Oh yes we will," panda left then along with fox and rabbit, leaving Doll alone on the ground. She blinked the rest of the tears away, glad that she had warned Kiku. Doll had been in the Atarashi household nearly a month now, she had learned how to get around Fuko's door without alerting her that she was there, she had discovered that Zero had a soft side for Sara and had been forced to watch Top Gun with Thanyos, Kiku, and Rosalinda. Doll had been rather enchanted by the film but the others acted as though it didn't impress them. Doll had also learned that she and Atticus had lived in the same zoo, although they had never seen each other and talked for hours about everything and anything. The collar had been removed, she had moved in with Sara and Rosalinda, she had made so many wonderful memories and the thought of them all made her smile.

At least they were safe, if anyone had to be taken and beaten up Doll was glad it was her. Her friends would be able to sleep easy. They might worry for a while, they may not give her a second thought, but Doll was happy that they were alive and well. Doll was resigned to her fate, she would probably die here in the tiny cell underground but at least there were people with memories of her, evidence she had lived and Doll couldn't have asked for more.

She awoke to darkness, Doll's need to go to the bathroom had become urgent and she rubbed her knees together in an attempt to make the feeling go away. "Excuse me!" Doll called, hoping she could be heard through the thick metal door. "I have to use the restroom!" Doll called twice more before the door finally opened. "Shut up!" Rabbit growled and pulled Doll up. He grabbed the back of the chair and dragged it out, leading Doll down a series of hallways lit by candles. Finally they entered another room and stopped. Rabbit locked the door and untied her from the chair. "Don't try anything," he said and turned around to give her some privacy.

It was a relief and soon Doll was back in the first room. She was retied to the chair and left alone once more. Doll had dozed off again, awaking when Fox came with a bottle of water. As far as doll could tell Fox was female and held the bottle to Doll's lips as she drank greedily. She hadn't realized how dry her tongue had felt until her thirst was quenched and water spilled out of the bottle and onto her lap, but Doll didn't care. Her hunger pangs silenced as well and as Fox left Doll uttered a quiet, "thank you."

The next time Doll awoke she was curled up in the corner of a dark space. Doll lifted her arms and found that it was hardly bigger than a packing box. She could feel the heavy chains weighing her arms down and tying her ankles together. Panic seized her, it was completely dark. "Let me out!" Doll screamed, banging against the metal walls. "Please, I won't try anything! Please I-I hate the dark!" Doll choked on her words. They didn't care, there was no one listening and she cried until she was asleep again.

Days passed, that was all Doll knew. She had lashed out when Panda slid his hand down her shirt again and so they had taken her pajamas, leaving Doll to shiver in her underwear in that tiny metal box. If Doll was good she got to be in the room, in front of the camera that was always watching her, supposedly connected to one of the computers in the Atarashi household. The weight she had gained there was quickly being shed and she grew weak as days passed. The fire in her had died out and the only time Doll fought was when Panda came. She would not give into him so easily.

Doll felt like a shell, she did nothing except lay on the floor, sometimes at her side, sometimes on her back, always staring at the ceiling. Sometimes when she shifted the chains would jingle and she would imagine it was really the keys in the door, that it was Kiku and he hadn't listened to her warnings and came to save her. Why would he though? Surely Doll was easily replaceable? Surely she had meant nothing to Kiku... It stung to think this but it was the only way that Doll could detach herself from the hope that they were coming-that he was coming. There were no more tears she could shed and the cold against her bare skin no longer bothered her. Doll had finally made peace with death, the end was close for her and then... Then what? Would she meet her parents in heaven? Would she find a community of humans in the sky that had met untimely deaths like hers? Or would it be eternal blackness? Doll closed her eyes, imagining that she was back home, it wasn't her home of course, but it was the closest thing to a home she had, had and so Doll thought about Atticus and Thanyos, Zero and Sara, Rosalinda, Grell, Dr. and Mrs. Atarashi, and of course she thought about Kiku. She thought of his voice when he read to her, how he would sometimes pretend to be the character or would read super slowly to add dramatic effect. The last book he had read aloud to her was the Wizard of Oz and occasionally Doll would think that she was Dorothy and this was just a bad dream, but every time she woke up it was either in that tiny dark metal box or in the room underground.

Once in a while Doll would say something to the camera, she would tell Kiku not to worry, that it would be over soon and she would thank Dr. Atarashi for all he had done, more than once Fox or Rabbit had come to the door and yelled at her to shut up. More than once Doll had attempted to strangle herself with the chains to make the end come faster, but they would come running and stopped her by throwing her in the box where there was no room to do such a thing and Doll began to believe that the camera wasn't connected to the main computer in the Atarashi house but to some sort of security room where her captors could watch her.

No one ever came for her. Doll began to crave what little human interaction she got through Fox and Rabbit, she even began to look forward to when Panda visited. Last time he came Doll had bit him and she was satisfied with the scream she had drew from that ugly sounding man. Sometimes they would toss her a piece of bread, one time they had even given Doll a slice of leftover pizza but the food hadn't agreed with her and she had spent the night on her side, quivering in pain and vomiting what little food she had in her stomach. It was worth it though, Doll would eat it again if it was offered. They had begun handling her with kid gloves and so she hadn't gotten anything but water for the next few days. Doll still had yet to get her clothes back, Rabbit had sort of hinted that they threw them out and Doll wasn't sure why. She didn't care anymore though because her body was numb and had gotten used to the pain and cold, the chains digging into her skin no longer bothered her and all she did really was sleep or talk to herself. It was boring, but Doll kept reassuring herself that it wouldn't be like this much longer. Soon she would be with Mom and Dad.

Doll turned over in bed, she had been home, or at least the place she considered her home, for about a week now after recovering at Dr. Atarashi's clinic for a while. The first few nights had been terrifying, clinging to whatever shreds of life remained in her, hearing the constant steady beep of machine's behind the walls of the isolated room she was forced to stay in so as not to be exposed to any foreign germs. It hadn't been one surgery like Dr. Atarashi had been expecting, in order to reverse the damage the animal masked being's had caused, Doll had undergone five surgeries. The only thing she could think about though was being excited to return home.

To see Rosa and Zero, Sara, Thanyos, Atticus, Fuko, and Kiku. Especially Kiku. She hadn't gotten to see any of them yet though as the house was unusually quiet when she returned and Dr. Atarashi had sent Doll right up to bed despite the fact that it was midday. He had said she was still recovering and shouldn't move around too much and that she had waited this long, a little while more wouldn't kill her. It felt like it though and Doll tirelessly tossed and turned, hoping that anyone of her friend's would pass through the doors and enter the room. What condition was Rosa in? She had been taken too and Doll was concerned. Although, if she had to, Doll would not hesitate to take another blow for her friend. It was just pain which was nothing foreign to her.

Doll slid from between the sheets and onto the cool floor, feeling restless as she made her way over to the stand alone mirror beside the window. She lifted up the soft blue shirt she was wearing to reveal the scars and ran her fingers over the tender flesh, marveling at how numb the area was thanks to the pain drugs and magic of science. Doll's skin was still warm to the touch and red, forever marred from the claws of being's. Doll turned to return to her bed, wondering how she was going to occupy herself until dinner and stopped. Her eyes traveled the length of the room to where a book sat on the dresser. Curious, Doll picked up the slim novel, wondering where it had come from. It was obviously not one of Sara or Rosa's as both girls could read. This one had simple letters in a large font and wonderful water color pictures printed on the front.

Doll returned to the bed, settling between the covers as she wished for the thousandth time that she could read. Instead of pondering too long on it though she opened up flimsy cover and marveled at the first photo. A landscape spotted with trees and yellow daisies greeted her. The next page had an endless ocean with a sandy beach and little white and gray flecked birds in top hats playing in the waves. She giggled, turning to the next page and wondering who had left this here. The final photo was of a zoo, but rather than humans inside of the cages there were animals of all sorts of colors and sizes. Ones with stripes or spots, some adorned with leathery gray skin and tusks or standing as tall as the trees. Doll ran her fingers over the page as though her intention were to pet them.

She felt sad for these poor beasts and could sympathize with them. To be locked behind bars was no way to live. Unconsciously Doll rubbed her wrists. The skin was still raw from being peeled by the chains but slowly the scars began to heal and with them so did Doll. She may no longer have the seamless porcelain skin that had warranted the nickname, but each scar was a memory. As Doll closed the book she looked at the book and her smile quickly faded, a feeling of terror and dread filling her chest. On the back were pictures of a rabbit, fox, and panda.

Doll quickly hurled the book across the room, watching it sail through the air and land near the bathroom. She grabbed the edge of the covers, pulling the blankets over her head in an attempt to hide. "No, no, no." Doll muttered to herself, squeezing her eyes shut and covering her ears with her hands. No they were dead, Kiku had killed them, they could no longer hurt him or Rosa or her. The memory of Panda's slimy fingers running between her chest was enough to make goosebumps crawl along her arms. The snarling and beating, being near death and speaking deliriously to a camera in order to warn Kiku to stay away, the chains, and embarrassment and shame.

Tears pricked her eyes, Doll shook her head. No it was over, she was safe here. Grell may be dead, sure a few of the windows had to be replaced, but it was still home. She was finally home.

Doll couldn't remember most things, her memories were terrifying fragments that left her shaking and breathless, but eventually they would fade and Doll would awake feeling as empty as before. The Doctor said it was for the best that she didn't remember, that it was something her body had come up with in order to protect herself, but Doll thought they were merely excuses for symptoms they had never seen. She knew some things though, her real name, where she had come from, and why she was living in a lab under close observation. Others were mysterious, one being why they had begun calling her "Doll."

Today was different, the balance had been upset, the Doctor had come in and led her out of the safety of her familiar room, where she could predict what would happen, where she could memorize a schedule. He had created an upset by leading her to a shiny car and instructing her to get inside. At first she thought nothing of it, but then as they drove further away, it was apparent that this was becoming more than a day trip.

"Where are we going?" Doll asked, tugging on a lock of hair with her hand that wasn't in a sling, a nervous habit. She was still pretty beat up, a lot of her still wrapped in bandages. They said she could take them off soon though, only another week or so and Doll would be healed. "Hmm, feeling brave today Little Mouse?" Doll normally did not speak to them, she would sit silently huddled in the corner on her bed, waiting for the Being's to go away. This upset though had given her a spurt of bravery. "Why?" It was whispered. The world suddenly became too much, new sights, sounds, and smells. Unfamiliar land marks and a giant mansion that towered over her like a beast looking for a meal. Doll backed up in the face of it, trying to get out of its shadow, trying to get back into the car. "We have made an executive decision to move you here." The doctor was speaking, preventing her from getting back in the vehicle. "It was decided that you would have access to better care here, where I can keep a closer watch on you." her hands were shaking, they began to clench into fists as tears welled in her eyes. The Being's had torn her away from the only thing she knew. "I-I'm scared," Doll's voice shook. The Doctor placed a hand on her shoulder, steering Doll inside.

Someone came up behind her, undoing the latch on her collar. Doll jumped, she didn't like to be touched unexpectedly. The collar was soon replaced by a new one, this one with several fancy buttons that had a language she couldn't read. Doll had never been taught to read as books had become illegal for humans. "Zero!" The Doctor took off his lab coat, his hand on her shoulder again, directing her further inside. Doll latched onto him like a toddler would their parent. He looked down at her questioningly, no doubt wondering if this was a good decision after all. "Zero! I've got a surprise for you!"

"No," Doll spoke softly, things finally clicking in her mind. She had heard whispers of this in the rehab zoo, of humans becoming pets, sometimes used as livestock or blood bags for the Beings to suck like juice boxes. "No," there were tears in her eyes, but the Doctor didn't seem to notice. He pat her head in an endearing motion, like one would to praise a dog. "Don't worry, Zero is quite a gentlemen I assure you."

DIALOGUE♞ #853c41 || INTERIOR MONOLOGUE♘ GREY

Jeez Doc knew he wasn't particularly fond of surprises. What could it be this time? Zero returned inside the estate after having spent all morning outside roaming the gardens and rolling hills of the property. As surveying the majestic property reminded him of where he was. Getting back to normalcy proved its challenges, and doc was constantly trying to help with grand gestures. All these things Zero was somewhat familiarized, when he had his family life was normal. The only difference being the stability doc promised. One place, one town, for as long as he stayed.

That was the thing , it was doc who decided if Zero could stay or go. It was the uncertainty of how long that'd last before Zero was given the boot again.

He'd lived the streets as a misguided ghost and to be honest he didn't want to return to that life.

Though he'd manage to settle, he missed his parents, his kid brother most of all. If doc truly wanted to help, investigating that night so many years ago would be it. Not that he wasn't grateful, he was, but it couldn't be helped. The past wasn't something he could back-burner any longer. Also there was a since of closure he longed for. Were his parents truly killed? And what about Ren? How could be absolutely certain he'd lost his brother?

At doc's call he summoned himself to the living room and there was a girl. Was she wearing a collar? Why did the image of a pet flicker in his thought?

He regarded the girl curious, for a moment taken by her fear. Bandages wrapped her arms and she appeared to have been living in a facility? The scent of a lab lingered faintly, the very scents doc carried with him.

"Uh, doc she doesn't look comfortable in that." He said, gestured at the ridiculous collar around her neck, "You should take it off."

She was human, no doubt, and despite the way the world had become it just wasn't right. At least he'd not tolerate it. Besides the collars reminded him too much of the hell that were the pit. Overalls the keeper yanking them by chains... Like an animal.

What was doc doing with her anyways? Why is she hear? Is she the surprise? If so then he'd better explain —Zero wasn't rolling with the punches. Especially when situation felt odd. That was a grave understatement in this case.

"The collar is for her safety," the Doctor's voice lowered an octave, he spoke softly now but he was addressing Zero. "She tends to run away when she gets scared, wouldn't want her getting off the property and getting snatched up by some human black market." He pat Doll's head again and gave her a gentle nudge forward. "She was living in a rehab zoo up until now, but wasn't getting any better. So the facility made an executive decision to move her here, where she would have someone to interact with." The Doctor didn't mention how he thought it would be good for Zero too, to have a friend and something to care for. Doll wouldn't look up, it was as though the floor had become incredibly interesting. "Go on, introduce yourself." He was speaking to her now, expecting her to talk.

"H-hello," Doll stuttered, her shaking had gotten even worse. She looked up for a second, meeting Zero's eye for a fraction of a minute before looking back down. "I-I'm Doll," the taste of words felt funny on her tongue, it was an odd name that had apparently been given to her in the first facility she had lived in. Her real name was Loretta and then a string of absurd numbers, but no one ever used it so she stuck to Doll. It was much easier to remember anyways. "Zero, I think you could benefit from this experience as well. I'll be here of course, going back and forth between work." The Doctor turned, giving them one last wave before going back outside, into the car and to the facility. He would be back of course, but not until after work.

Doll went from looking at Zero, to averting her eyes and looking at the ground. She wiped away the tears that were threatening to spill down her cheeks, trying and failing to look brave. She was terrified to speak, but what if she didn't and they changed their minds and sent her to a different house or back to the zoo? "H-how d-do you d-do?" Doll stuttered when she became nervous, but the stutter only succeeded in making her more nervous and thus made the stutter worse. She clenched her hands into fists again, the nails on her fingers making little crescents in her palms. She wanted to stop shaking, she wanted to be brave.

Safety. More like bullshit. Not that doc would be persuaded otherwise. If she was a runner and she managed to take off, yeah, guess he could see the imminent threat it'd pose on her. Provided Zero allow her to get that far. He'd often contemplated such desire the first time around, back when Doc had taken him off the streets, offered him a roof and sustenance. Yeah he'd thought it was suspicious but got over it eventually.

So he'd guessed correctly, the girl had been kept in some kind of zoo. And now what, being reintegrated to the new society? And she isn't even given the choice. That's just how things run now. As far as he could tell it'd take a while for, Doll to adjust.

And why is her name Doll? Surely she had a real more appropriate name.

Doc was still ever busy with work and Zero nodded his head. He kept his disappointment hidden, and shrugged,"Catch you later then." He watched the scientist leave and for a brief moment all was silent.

Then she finally, albeit words tumbling in raw nerves spoke up. It reminded him of Ren, he used to be incredibly shy.

Zero met her gaze without staring, "Well, I'm golden. But I wonder how are you?" He said, watched her briefly then glanced out to the opposite hall, then calmly strode forward until he he was directly in front of her. To which he pointedly reached across and removed her collar. "As long as you're by my side you'll always be safe. Take one step ahead of me, and I will make you cry. Ya hear?" He tossed the wretched thing for Grell to throw away, and gestured she follow him.

There was a moment of brief silence before he spoke, saying that he was golden. The Doctor had called him Zero, was that his real name? Why would someone ever choose a number for a name? A brief memory flashed inside of her head, someone speaking in numbers that might as well have been a foreign language. Were they addressing her? Doll didn't have long to think about it before Zero strode over. Doll flinched, bracing herself to be hit when he reached forward and undid the collar. She was confused and watched with a slightly awed expression as he tossed the collar across the room. Was he serious? Wouldn't the Doctor get mad?

The shaking wasn't so bad anymore, without the choking of the metal collar Doll felt a bit more at ease. Her neck was red and rubbed raw from having to wear those things and the wound that she had gotten so used to stung with the bite of fresh air on her neck. "As long as you're by my side you'll always be safe. Take one step ahead of me, and I will make you cry. Ya hear?" Doll nodded her head in reply, scared once more, her lower lip quivering slightly. She didn't like crying, it was just that her life had no stability. Everything was one big question mark from whether she'd be transferred to another zoo to if they would deem her unable to recover and kill her off. Although they made it illegal to kill humans, there were still laws such as humanly euthanizing in certain cases where they believed it would be merciful to put them down. It was a long and arduous appeal that you had to make in front of a court, thankfully her case had never gone that far... Yet.

When Zero gestured for her to follow, Doll snapped back to reality, following behind him quickly. Her eyes were wide with wonder and as they walked through the space, she drank in every little detail, trying to memorize the route. Unfortunately the Doctor had been all too correct. Whenever Doll got scared she would run and hide, like a mouse who squeezed into the smallest of spaces to protect itself. "W-where are we going?" Doll worked up the courage to ask, her stutter already getting better.

DIALOGUE♞ #853c41 || INTERIOR MONOLOGUE♘ GREY

He'd caught her reaction, like that of a defenseless little kid. She didn't even look that much younger than himself. Once upon a time humans had been the dominant race. The irony wasn't lost to him. Doc and who ever she'd been with prior really messed with her head. He gave a humorless chuckle, their roles should have been reversed. Life had been hell for him, and nearly every night he was brutally reminded of it. But he dealt in his own way. How was she taking it? How did she deal? Did she at all? Had she ever snapped at Doc or whoever she'd been with? He shook his head, well since asking her was out of the question, they'd just have to find something.

At the corner of his eyes he recognized her gaze, the observant kind of look, both wary and wonder. A glimpse of doubt, could he blame her? She must have gone through so much worse crap. Hopefully she'll be strong enough, to get past that. Not live in that constant fear. He gave his word and planned on keeping it. Something about her gave an air of high society, the delicate structure of her face, once dainty hands wrapped in bandages. Fragments coming together which made up her degrading nickname.

Doll

A child's play thing, something that can be broken and thrown away. Insignificant, dispensable.

No better than the collar forced around her neck.

Not on board with that.

"W-where are we going?"

All she had to do was follow to find out. If they were going to do this, considering her timidity, they'd start small. He came to hesitate once reaching the lush gardens with its gigantic koi pond. He stared into the rippling clear waters almost as though he couldn't believe his reflection and the vibrant horizon above.

Not too long ago, all you saw was dirty, clouded water, murky reflections.

Instead of answering her question he went with, "Whatever you gotta say, just say it. If you don't like something, no matter what, don't keep it to yourself." Avoiding the entire run-away scene when something as simple as speaking up took less effot. She could rely on him if she wanted.

An observation those stupid scientists failed to understand.

When dealing with an animal, if one doesn't notice the clear signals they send, they miss the message, and the animal will either attack or flee without warning.

However the person standing beside him wasn't an animal, not even close. Tethering a person to leads and treating them as if they were, nothing but a wild creature that needed domesticating, well, they start to believe it. Mentality shifts. And what good does it lead to? Where was the bloody logic in that? What happened to mercy? Does it not exist at all?

Humans have the active ability to put things to an end. They also have freedom and can make their own choices. Once upon a time there was a Law system, and human rights. How did it all come to this?

Doc brought this girl over, as if she were some kind of experiment. A lab rat. Paired her up with him, a barely functioning being that similarly had to keep his game face on. He'd failed at the one thing older brothers were meant to do. Protect. He wasn't ever making that mistake again.

With a sigh Zero returned his attention to her, "Gotta real name?"

DIALOGUE♞ #853c41 || INTERIOR MONOLOGUE♘ GREY

At the sight of her flinching back from the quick movement of fish, Zero chuckled thoroughly amused. Cute. At least she was curious and that was just fine. Awe and amazement, had she never seen fish before? How much of the world did she even recognize?

"There's a bunch of fish here, those," he pointed to the golden breed,"fancy gold fish and those, are koi fish."

She seemed to like the fish, wait until she learned they were edible. Raw or cooked.

"It's Loretta... I think."

"Miss Loretta. I like it." The name suited her and it felt right on his tongue, especially when he rolled the r.  Ultimately she called the shots, he'd address however she preferred. It was satisfying though, a real piece of her identity. He put it on file.

She caught herself when voicing her own thought to which he shrugged off, no need to be so formal at all, offering a kind smile he lowered his gaze to the rippling clear waters full of life.

"Was born Rei if we're being technical, it's Japanese and translate to Zero. My folks just stuck with the latter and it's been such ever since." He rubbed at his neck to massage the tension away, "You can call me whatever you want, just not Master or anything weird like that." Such a role didn't suit.

"Can I see the others?"

He glanced back at her, "...Go ahead. No need to ask." The giant garden was like another world, one could lose themself in its enchantment and sheer beauty. He often found himself roaming these very grounds when he'd spent enough time inside. But it was nothing compared to what lay beyond the property line. There were still a few parks standing, each retained their original trees and fields.

When he'd been out there it's all he saw, yet it didn't seem so vibrant then. With the way things went he reevaluated a bit and appreciated nature for what it was. An order, a balance. Should be preserved and maintained. It's what made the crux of the world.

They started walking, slower than normal, if she wanted they could trail the path from end to end, just so she could familiarize the terrain. Apart from the gardens there was a stable that housed the majestic of horses. One in particular he helped care for, a pale Arabian horse named Isabel. She was gentle as she was powerful.

If time permitted maybe Loretta could meet the horse, even if from a distance. She might like one of her own. Some kind of bond that came when caring for the life of another. Just another soul to cherish.

"You aren't afraid of heights are you?"

[size=140]
"Japan huh? In the words of Professor Solomon; 'Across the sea is the land of Japan. With its ancient shrines, sumo wrestlers, Zen masters, capsule hotels, Laughing Festival, fortunetelling birds, haiku masters, phantom foxes, mania for bathing, musical crickets, tea masters, Living National Treasures, Moon Viewing Night, bowing etiquette, Festival of the Dead, dream-eating Baku, samurai films, Fuji pilgrims, and robots, it is unlike anywhere else in the world. Let me tell you about it.'" He glanced back her with a rare smile, was she truly fascinated? "You can look it up in the library when we get back, but it doesn't compare with actually being there. We could go someday."

He watched her survey and touch the many flowers they passed by. Her fascination made her glow almost like a child, filled with awe. Since she wasn't afraid of heights, flight or even going up high places wouldn't be an issue. Good to know. Climbing things was his specialty and there was a favorite spot in the woods that showed a magnificent aerial view of the grounds. Assuming she'd partake in such ventures with him. That'd be fun.

Look at you, thinking up adventures, like you used to once...

And why the hell not? Wasn't she free to do whatever the hell she god damned pleased? Well, she could, her days as a freaking mannequin for those white coats to poke and prod were over! He liked her, and as far as he was concerned she wasn't going anywhere. Even if Doc had a fit, it wasn't Zero's concern. He'd decided, and there was no shaking his resolve.

They walked on wards a bit more, until they came across the clearing fields. Ahead were the fenced up portion of the horse training grounds, a few of them were already graving while Ari tended to the other horses in the stable, readying to mount.

The white Arabian, Isabell was drinking water, yet to notice Zero.

"Look over there, see the man, he's the horse trainer." Zero pointed ahead where Ari in his staple plaid and jeans was tending to the various gelding. "And the black horse he's with, that's Noir. We got her a few weeks ago. Wanna meet her?"

He couldn't help the excitement in his voice, her joy was infectious and honestly how much time has it been since he did anything remotely close to spending time with someone like this? He'd nearly forgotten what it felt like.

Doll didn't know what half of those things meant, nor what they were. She was more confused than before, having never heard of most of those words. Tea was something she knew of and she clung to the familiar word like the safety of a life raft in the drifting ocean. "I like tea," normally Doll ended up scalding her tongue on the burning drink, but once she got past that she enjoyed the flavor. Musical crickets, phantom foxes, robots, those were all foreign words. Perhaps they were actually Japanese? Did they speak a different language there?

When Zero mentioned a library Doll's slight smile fell. "I-I can't read," Doll wasn't sure why she felt ashamed of this since it was completely normal for humans these days to have no education. She would very much like to visit this Japan someday though. "I-I would like to go there sometime though," Doll didn't look up, it was as though the floor had suddenly become very interesting. She couldn't help but let her thoughts drift to Zero. He was a very odd Being, not wishing to be called Master and seeming to have no interest in the things her previous Masters were captivated by. He had this sort of amused look in his eyes, or at least Doll thought so.

The Doctor had the same twinkle, she thought, although it was a curious thing that the son looked nothing like his Father. Perhaps he had been adopted? Or maybe he looked more like his Mother? She wondered if the Doctor was married since she had never seen a ring on his finger. He probably just didn't want to dirty it in his field of work. Or maybe Being's didn't partake in the classical traditions of humans? "Do you have any siblings?" Doll suddenly asked; she didn't know why, but she felt stupidly brave. She wanted to know if there were other Being's she had to look out for though.

Zero suddenly pointed to something in the distance. A man riding some sort of beast on four legs. This creature was nothing like the fish, it was large and majestic, its legs appearing powerful even at this distance. It had a mane of hair winding down the side of its head and a bushy tail. The poor thing was saddled with the man sitting on top of it and Doll couldn't help but think that such a beautiful beast should never be held back by something like them. "Horse." It was a whisper that barely touched her lips, another new word.

Why would they give it a name? Doll wondered. It almost seemed comical. Did the fish have names too?

They had gotten her a few weeks ago. Were these horses sold like humans? Were they beaten down and tied up as well? Doll pursed her lips together, tugging nervously on the sling one of her arms was in. She wasn't sure if she would feel comfortable next to such a... horse? "I-I d-don't know. Is it s-safe?" Her stutter was coming back now that she felt nervous again, she was scared to say the wrong thing and upset him.

King for a Day | Pierce The Veil

DIALOGUE♞ #853c41 ||
INTERIOR MONOLOGUE♘ GREY

"What kind of tea?" There was so many different brands and types, he could let Grell know so one is left at her discretion whenever.

After a while. "I-I can't read," She seemed nearly flustered at the fact. Well it wasn't her fault she was never given the chance to learn.

"Don't know huh? Then I'll just have to teach you." It was sad the way humans were subjected not only to the cruelty of beings but forced into ignorance by abolishing their education entirely. If only he could do something about it, as it stood he was just one being, and probably wouldn't last.

"Do you have any siblings?"

An innocent question. But why did he flinch as though something were thrown at him? Perhaps he'd not expected it from her. Doc had yet to ask about his circumstances that lead to their encounter on the streets, or anything beyond what Zero wanted him to know. Which wasn't much if he was being honest with himself. Some bridges yet to be crossed. Just because he lived under the same roof as the doctor, didn't change how utterly insecure he felt, mostly with himself that is. He had grown used to rejection. Bound to happen eventually.

The answer slow in coming, "Just the one, but he won't be around to pester you if that's the matter."

Had Ren been, he most likely would have wanted to be friends. Thinking of him made the hollowness yawn, and everything lost its vibrance. After the death of his parents he'd been given one job, one job and he screwed it up, blew it. That'd be on him for as long as he lived and there wasn't anything that can be done. But find out who had caused it and make 'em pay.

As for humans they'd never trust beings, why would they? She must have grown to fear the beings. They were as monstrous as they were feigning civility. They must have thought upping the hierarchy of command by knocking down the human rank was the greatest achievement. It couldn't end there no. They had to also force the entire human race to slavery. And humanity was supposed to be precious, rare. Pets for the wealthy. Although humans themselves were capable of committing the most horrendous acts, some more monstrous than others. Beings however, as they likened to prove themselves superior in everything, were worse.

So he could see the mistrust, even if she hid it, always it's there, lingering in her eyes. In every flinch and stutter. It was a given, she would hesitate and come to doubt everything. For some reason he wanted to be seen differently. Less of a monster and more normal. Even from her eyes.

The closer they came toward the horses, the more unsure her motions. The uncertainty seemed to be her default, like stepping on eggshells. She fiddled with the sling on her arm. When had this happened? Who hurt her? Did Doc allow it? He'd demand answers from him later, but for now he had to keep focus. Steady.

"I-I d-don't know. Is it s-safe?"

For a while he didn't respond, merely watched her. She must have forgotten what he'd told her. Or perhaps didn't believe. A cool, crisp breeze swept around, tossed her golden tendrils about and for an instant he felt the powerful urge to touch. He fisted his hand instead, she wouldn't like that. She'd probably edge back in terror. How to act before her without marring her perception of him? Was it even good? Judging from the fact she had yet run screaming to the hills it was. Would this place ever be home at least for her? Tough to answer, he'd never associated with a human, but had long come to familiarize himself with their former beliefs, customs, lifestyles, and habits. Many of the "banned" literature that Doc kept hidden, Zero of course managed to locate and study cover to cover. Nothing compared with the actuality of a personal engagement. All things considered, from this point, thread with care.

Bury the past. Play his part.

He managed a smile that failed to warm the ice in his chest, with hope that it would at least comfort her more than it did him.
"Horses are sensitive, if you approach with fear, they will sense it. Be calm and confident and they will trust." He offered her his hand, "Remember what I promised you Miss Loretta?" Although he wasn't exactly anger management, it was from the horses and their own inner strength that he drew a sense of level-ness from. They evoked it, they were pure creatures that lack malicious intent. In return he assisted their keeper in providing them the utmost care and safe world, where they were well nourished and appreciated. They would never find that in the wild, with its unpredictable and unforgiving nature. They would most likely be hunted for their meat.

That was the way things were now, beautiful and tragic.

What type of tea? There were different types? Thinking back, she could only ever remember one flavor, or maybe that was the only one they had? "It's mint," Doll replied, "Mint tea," she wasn't sure where the words had come from, only that they were there and that her mind seemed confident in the fact that it had been some sort of lemony mint flavor. Her mind had reached to the deepest depths and pulled that information up, it seemed. As like all of her memories, most were a murky darkness that she was unsure of treading into.

"Just the one, but he won't be around to pester you if that's the matter."

Doll wasn't sure why, but the thought of Zero's brother not being here made her sad. Maybe it was the distant look in his eyes he had during the moment of silence? Doll felt as though this weighed heavily on him, perhaps his brother was no longer living? Although it meant one less Being to worry about, seeing Zero's expression made her stomach tie in knots. No doubt the two had been close, she was sure. It's funny, the thought made her want to comfort Zero, although she was unsure how. Humans disappeared every day and she could never bring herself to feel anything for them, how could she bring herself to feel anything for Zero's not present sibling?

He seemed so confident in everything, a trait Doll admired although not out rightly so. Had he dealt with humans before? Maybe he had used to own a whole string of them? Maybe he still did and they were simply wandering about the property, staying out of sight for whatever reason? The thought didn't make Doll feel any better. She hardly felt easy around anyone seeing as how both the Humans and Beings were terribly cruel. There was only one human Doll ever felt easy around and he had disappeared almost three months after she had met him. Doll had never heard from him again and sometimes she contemplated the thought that he had been terminated. A sweet old man who had a terrible back and could hardly walk on his own, yes, now that she thought about it she was almost certain the Being's had terminated him.

"Horses are sensitive, if you approach with fear, they will sense it. Be calm and confident and they will trust." Her eyes widened. Horses could sense fear? Did they have other abilities? Were they some sort of four legged Beings? "Remember what I promised you Miss Loretta?" Even though he used her name, Doll hardly recognized it. He offered his hand and though she hesitated at first, Doll took it. She didn't trust Zero to not crush it in his so Doll's grip was loose in case she had to pull away quickly. He hadn't shown anything but kindness to her, but she couldn't place her faith in someone she had just met.

"I remember." And with that she began walking towards the giant creature called horse.

DIALOGUE♞ #853c41 ||
INTERIOR MONOLOGUE♘ GREY

Mint tea. Surely Grell had that kind within his collections of tea, if not they'd order it. Simple. Maybe he could join her and teach her literature and writing during the mornings. The idea settled his thoughts, as well as his spirit as he likened to believe that all living things had one. Even cursed beings. It'd grant a better reason to rise from bed aside from nightmares being the culprit.

At first she seemed hesitant, and he remained ever patient. Then her fingers touched his palm as light and delicate. He gingerly held her hand and kept his gaze upon her. Slowly they crossed the field toward the stable. He waved a greeting toward the man taking Noir for a ride.

Finally Isabel noticed them and her nostrils flared, almost a gasp, surprise as if she hadn't expected his return—much less with a new comer. Bright caramel eyes sought his own more intrigued mixed with excitement than nervous.

Would this be also a first for her, meeting a person?

Zero leaned in to whisper, "This is Isabel, she's the most friendliest , gentlest, and also sensitive of them all." He reached for a group of carrots left in the bucket already washed and ready to eat, "She's really sweet and loves attention, don't you girl."

He gave a tender smile toward Isabel who leaned in and tugged at his hair. A sign of affection or impatience.

"Means she's happy to see me." It was like this every time they met, such a delight. He waved the carrot for her to accept.

She did and her demeanor changed instantly, as if she personified joy. To which he soaked up like a plant in need of light. She had that affect on him. He ran his fingers through her long flowing mane, and turned to the girl he was linked to. "Do you want to try?" He gestured toward her, "Isabel, this is Miss Loretta, she's a little shy, but really nice."

In a way they were somewhat alike, both had been extremely shy at first. He wondered if Miss Loretta had once been that way, glowing with happiness. Wondered of it existed somewhere deep within, buried under the sadness.

Did it also exist for him or had it extinguished long ago? Could beings recover and bounce back like humans could? Or was it something they lacked? Like a soul or a true heart? Something that kept them fighting no matter what.
Did they define love the same way? The love for family or friends? According to the records and infinite poetry he's found, it was apparent that love regardless of race or species translated the same.

But humans would always possess something the beings will never have.

Maybe it was because he's a being there were aspects of humanity he could never fully understand. Maybe that was why the scientists chose her as their subject, as if she were a box containing all these answers to their mysteries that could be analyzed. Those things were abstract, they could only be felt. But what did it mean?

Perhaps she could teach him, what it's like to be human. What it feels to see the world through fragile eyes, live a life, but actually be alive. At least it was a little hope he harbored buried deep, a secret he shared with no one. He picked up a carrot for Miss Loretta, "Just hold it out for her," he turned her hand, placed the end of the vegetable in her palm. "she'll adore you for it."
