Introduction

May 3rd, 2018
The MMORPG Elder Tale.

The game world was made using the Half-Gaia Project, in essential halving the distance of travel that we would originally have in reality. With the entire world divided into 13 servers, and changing into another server is as simple as using a transfer gate, the game gained traction significantly since its inception. Each server has its own unique class for the region.

While most of the regions would use a Pay-2-Play scheme (game and subscriptions must be bought), only one is known to be Free-2-Play and has microtransaction (Korea, likely referring to South Korea). It has 20 million players globally since its launch in 1998 by the Los Angeles-based company Atharva Inc.

And now, its twelfth expansion pack, Homesteading the Noosphere, was released, with the Japanese server to get it. Then, without any sign/warning, around 30,000 players in the Japanese server alone, were trapped inside the game. It was also estimated that the amount of players from the rest of the world, when combined with the Japanese, that got trapped in the game when the new expansion went live were about 700,000 players.

The trapped players were initially confused, scared, and angry. However, as time goes by, some rose up to deal with the situation. Some dealt with the problem by creating a governing body to keep their fellow players from doing further harm to both fellow players and the Non-playable Characters, or as they are called in this world: the People of the Land. Of course, the whole ordeal, which would be known as the Apocalypse or the Catastrophe later on, also affected the NPCs. They gained their own personality, memories, backgrounds, etc., or in other words: they've become Human, or at least they're no longer simple beings with pre-programmed lines and actions.

While the main storyline focused on Shiroe and many of his acquaintances, ours will follow along, but as one of the sides that were never really explored. What of the others that were not as calm as Shiroe, or as optimistic as Naotsugu? Those who are not able to cope with everything that has happened?

This is our story, as we delve into the darker side of Log Horizon.

Pat, pat, pat - his behaviour was getting on her nerves. Though she won't say a thing, not yet. Not while he's talking at least:

"I suppose we're done for the day though. Feel free to go somewhere else if you want, or stay here if you wish."

She opened mouth to say something, but then... then he just left with Call of Home. Left... in mere seconds she opened the window, clicked "create message" and then she paused. This is dumb, she thought. I hate him far too much, guess I've been too composed these past few days... - she sighed, intent on letting off some steam... in a crazy way.
In next few days there would be a growing number of adventurers, that encountered a crazy sorcerer with strange spells... that blew up people. Yes, blowing up people... and some ocassional rocks, and trees, was all she did.

OOC - So... I'm out of ideas as you can see, though it does fit her a bit, since she's a bit of crazy one.

A few days has passed since Josua did anything proper. He's mostly experimented with trying to improve his firearm, which has been going on a bumpy process. The lack of machinery that helps in forming the rifling for the barrel was certainly not helping at all. Despite that, however, he managed to refine the outwards of the firearm, making it closer to look like a modern rifle, probably like a typical bolt-action rifle that was commonly used during World War 2. The slight difference was that he knows how a magazine functions, and while he managed to make some, it was hard because of making the spring needed to help feed the rounds up were a pain in the arse for him, with his hands being a tad big and all, and the spring being thing and small. He then would make more modern tools to help him, like pliers and other stuff that would be functional for him.

He ate mostly ingredients (like fruits and vegetables) and drank normal water, just to keep himself from getting disappointed over the tasteless food and other drinks that were available. He'd often walk around the city to daze off and keep himself somewhat entertained.

At one time, he contacted Shiroe, who was, with his party, on the way to Susukino in place of his acquaintance for a certain task.

"Shiroe. How's that errand going?" Josua asked him shortly after beginning the voice chat.

"Ah, we've finished it a little while ago. We're on our way back now." Shiroe replied.

"Wait, what? That was fast..." Josua said, shocked at hearing the reply.

"Well, I met an old friend of mine. Thanks to him keeping the girl safe, we were able to leave faster than what I thought earlier." Shiroe explained.

"I'm sensing there's a complication during the process?" Josua asked.

"Yes. Brigandia's Guild Master, Demikas, had added the girl as a friend. He could track her from his friendlist. That's why my friend has been sheltering her since then." Shiroe answered.

"Wow. She's quite lucky, that's for sure." Josua said.

"She sure was. I'll be back in probably a week or less." Shiroe then said.

"Ok, sure. I have something that I need to tell you, but I suppose I'll wait until you're back." Josua said.

"Yeah, same here. I managed to learn something new as well. I guess this is a goodbye for now?" Shiroe said as his finger hovered above the end call button.

"Yeah. See you later." Josua said as he ended the call.

About several days later
Josua met Shiroe at a tavern in the city. The two had planned to meet after Shiroe returned for a discussion on some matter. Josua also asked Grim to come with him, since he need her unique spell, for the sake of discretion. The three then sat on the upper level of the tavern, which was less crowded and only a few people were there.

"Okay, let's get this underway." Josua said as he gestured towards Grim to activate her spell.

She winced, still bit sceptical about this whole charade - that Josua seemed to like to call a meeting. Nonetheless she snapped the fingers, and there they were... in a mirror world. Where no one could hear their screams, kinda like in space - she thought.
She only hoped it would be interesting, far more interesting than blowing stuff up. Cause she got bored of the latter not so long ago.

β€” You two can talk now. β€” She said, while her head rested on the left palm β€” Just please... don't bore me to death.

Josua noticed that the space felt different, telling him that they're now in the "Mirror World". He then gestured Shiroe to sit down on the sit that was on the opposite side of him. He also nodded to Grim, which was also gesturing her to sit down at a seat of a nearby table.

"Let's get this started then." Josua said as he pulled the Musket from his magic bag.

Shiroe was baffled to see something like a Musket. He was a veteran of Elder Tale, so it was pretty much easy for him to guess that this item wasn't made using the system. To be precise, this item isn't something that originally existed in Elder Tale. Josua was about to explain when Shiroe gestured him to halt.

"It seems that it wasn't just me that found out about this possibility." Shiroe said as he retracted his palm.

"Wait... Does that mean..." Josua said before Shiroe answered.

"Yes. Since this is our new reality, it's possible to do something like what we'd do in the Real World." Shiroe said.
"My acquaintance that joined me from Susukino, Nyanta, also found out about this. He managed to make food and drinks that actually tasted like they're supposed to." He continued.
"Granted, my party and I, tried to do the same thing on our way to Susukino. But it resulted in something like a weird paste that tasted nasty, so we initially thought that it was the rule of the world. Apparently, there were conditions that we didn't meet. For starters, it required the Chef sub-class. I was certainly surprised to know that Nyanta had this subclass. The second condition is that the subclass must be sufficiently leveled. If not, they would fail and the food/drink will become that weird paste. And the last one is that the results differ, even though the makers are of the same level." he further explained.

Josua was burrowing his eyebrows, thinking about the information dump that he got just now. It basically confirmed what he had hypothesized, but with more pre-requisites than he had imagined. However, it also opened a door to an unimaginable area, previously unthinkable to him.

"I see... I guess this confirms my initial suspicions." He said to Shiroe.

"But with this, the impact would be more than what people could imagine. I can, but it's so much that it's making my head hurt." he continued, while massaging his temple on the side of his head.

"I don't blame you. I have some other things in mind, but I suppose this really applies to a lot of things." Shiroe said.

"I suppose..." Josua replied.

"Well, I should get going. There's something that I need to do." Shiroe said as he went up from his chair.

"Yeah. Thanks for coming." Josua replied as he shook Shiroe's hand.

"Grim, we're done. Sorry for troubling you." he said to her, as he puts back the Musket into his magic bag.

OOC - Yay! You're back! Also you forgot, that in previous post you wrote: "The three then sat on the upper level of the tavern, which was less crowded and only a few people were there." ^^

Grim sighed, for with mirror world came a long, in her opinion, exchange between the two. Between Josua, and Shiroe guy.
She listened to them of course, pretending to be somewhat asleep, with closed eyes. There were things she had to do, and thing to be shown. So once she heard their chat had come to an end. She couldn't help, but smile.

"Grim, we're done. Sorry for troubling you."jj said, all while hiding away the musket. The other guy, Shiroe... she let out of the mirror world.

"Great jj, also I got a lil surprise. Though you may feel like vomiting at the first try." Without any warning she grabbed Josua, and moved to another place, naturally the mirror world would become no more, once left behind, while they...
They landed in a familar place - their little meeting spot, near the tree.

"I figured it out." Grim grinned, and waited for him to deal with nausea.

OOC- The Players in the New World are immune to any forms of disease.

"Vomit? Why would I-" Josua said before he suddenly changed places in a blink of an eye.

He felt a slight tang in his supposed brain, but it immediately subsided. And from her earlier words, he immediately figured the meanings of it. She had successfully created a Teleportation magic. He then went back to sit near the campfire that was yet to be lit once more. He was certainly caught by surprise when she suddenly grabbed him and they changed location in an instant, but this gave him more stuff to think about.

"This..." he then began typing furiously into Message.

"How much MP did you use?"
"How far can this spell go to from point A to point B?"
"How many people that can be transported at once?"
"Who else knows of this spell aside from me and you?"
"Can it also be used to transport NPCs with us?"

- Those were the list of the questions in the Message as he sent it to her.

OOC - Well, alright, but she actually had a nausea the first time ^^

She stared, listened to his questions after the teleportation, and finally sighed, when she got the message.

"I'm surprised you didn't vomit. I did the first time..." She winced at the memory flashing before her eyes.

"Anyway, the questions. - She took a deep breath - Just a little bit. Second would be anywhere, three depends on how many magic users are involved in teleportation. And who else knows it? Just me, and you."

When it comes to NPCs, that one is yet to be tested. So there's nothing to be said.

"Now, do I really need to send you the message with answers?"

"Well, I don't mind if you would answer it directly." Josua said to her when she asked him.

"The reason that I even did that was because it's a matter of convenience. I know you don't like to talk much, but this should ease that a bit." he then further elaborated.

And from the answers that she gave him, it seemed to him that she has yet to test the NPC part. As for the rest... They were interesting, to say the least. While this solves the part of teleporting to other cities, the drawback from the usage was clear: MP consumption, as to the typical stereotype of teleportation spells that he was aware of from some fantasy stories. This meant that this spell is useful for transporting a small squad, but to transport an entire Legion Raid group would be hard without the necessary magic users, since the ratio of physical to magic users would be heavily on the magic users, thus lacking in physical fighters. Then again, at least two full parties filled with magic users could supply the necessary MP for the spell, but the drawback is still there.

"Last question. Can you only teleport objects/items/vehicles?" he then asked her.

She smiled at the last question, and took out an apple - threw it up, and high. What happened next were two things, one - apple vanished, only to appear right above Josua's head, and two - it hit him hard.

"That surely answers your question." Probably hurts a bit too, she thought and chuckled. Oh, wait... it's game so he won't feel it. Meh.
Come to think of it, why do I feel pain, nausea, and...

"Hey, do you... feel any pain, or anything at all since you know."

"Huh-?" Josua said before he got hit by the apple that got teleported to a space just above his head.

While that certainly answered his last question, what she did was certainly an... Unorthodox way to answer his question. Although, he didn't feel any pain when the apple hit his head. And when Grim asked him about it, he sighed a little before he answered.

"I didn't feel anything. As far as to my knowledge, some things aren't properly translated into this world that affects us, the players. While taste was attained, pain wasn't translated, thus we're more like... A prick of a needle? Or like a... Blow that doesn't actually give you any sense of pain? I dunno how to say this, but in short, no sense of pain whatsoever. And also... Normal humans would get sick easier since we're out here in the open, with just a fire to warm the body. Weirdly enough, it also didn't get translated, like the sense of pain." He said to her.

Grim couldn't help but sigh, and look worried for a brief moment, all while she said:

"Oh, alright... weird." The latter was more of a mutter. Then she shook head, looked up, and smiled.

"Whatever, so what will you do now?"

"I suppose I'll just continue to refine my Firearm, and make more stuff in the meantime. Though I feel like it won't be long before a massive change will be brought upon this city." Josua answered her when she asked him what will he do next.

It was from his own experience that the current situation in Akiba was more like a calm before the storm. With confirmation from both him and Shiroe on certain findings about this world and its mechanisms, things will start to move in a certain direction. A new storm will begin in Akiba, and it will eventually spread across the whole of Yamato. And it will all start, if his prediction is correct, with the first usage of "normal cooking" in this world, for the people in Akiba. No doubt, Shiroe would be the one who initiates the idea, but as to who will help him or how, Josua can only guess.

"A change is coming. And I intend to ride upon its waves." he said as he looked towards the twilight sun, descending before it turned into the dark night.

Grim failed to notice Josua being... focused on something, before he said:

"A change is coming. And I intend to ride upon its waves." woken up from thoughts, she looked at him, then at the twilight sun. She chuckled.

"Saying that under these... circumstances almost makes it sound like some kind of a prophecy. When did you become a prophet?" She grinned at the latter.

"Heh. For some reason, my predictions often come true. You'd wish that I'll be wrong about some things in the coming times." Josua replied, chuckling from her reaction of his previous words.

While he often joked about it since as far as during his school days, it was uncanny for him, since compared to others, his prediction, on average, would come true more often than not. In this case, for what's about to come, he was actually right about it, and that it would come sooner than he'd think was much more chilling.

Several days later
When he had his daily walk around the city, he started seeing more people eating what seemed to be hamburgers. And from the looks on their faces, it seemed to have actual taste, since some of them were visibly crying while eating it. He then approached one of them.

"Where did you get that burger?" he asked.

"Ah, it's from the Crescent Moon Refreshment Stand. You can find it just around the corner, at the large space." the player replied, pointing at the direction.

He then went to the said direction, and found a massive line in front of the stand. He also saw a girl, apparently part of the staff from the stand, holding a placard with the sign "The Line Ends Here". He then approached the girl.

"Is this where those people bought their hamburgers?" he asked her.

"Um, umm... Y-Yes! We're the Crescent Moon Shop that sells real burgers with real taste! If you'd like, you can join the line and try it for yourself, mister!" She said, fumbling at some of her words.

How young... Josua wondered as he entered the line. Granted, he had a hunch, but he wanted to see if this was for real. After about an hour, he finally got to the stand's front. He saw a quite curvy woman being the cashier.

"Hello, young man! What would you like to order?" she asked.

"Hmm...-" he said as he glanced at the menu and the prices, before answering, "I'll have the super burger and the bottled tea please,".

"One Super Crescent Burger and One Black Rose Tea Bottle, coming right up! That'll be 45 Gold!" she said.

He then took out 45 gold coins from his inventory, and handed it to her. He then waited for a little before the lady gave him his order: what's basically a double burger, and a bottled tea. Hope this isn't a waste of my money... He thought as he walked towards a nearby table and have his meal there. That amount of money could get a lot of those bland foods from the NPC stalls. Then again, this is just out of his own curiosity.

"Well, here goes nothing." he said as he opened the burger's wrap, and took a big bite from it.

There was a sudden shock to his nerves. An assault of flavors lighting up his taste buds that had suffered from the lack of flavor for some time, and the neurons in his avatar's brain went into overdrive as he quickly finished the burger in 10 minutes.

"Holy shit... It has actual taste. Well I'll be damned." he said, while laughing like a madman.

Those bunch from the Crescent Moon Stand were from the Crescent Moon Alliance. For a guild their size, this kind of thing was abnormal, since no guild that are the same size as them or even lower would dare to venture out into the wilds or even have the mind to try these things. By process of elimination, there was only one possible person who could've pushed them into this scheme: Shiroe. He then further went into reading the whole thing.

"Shiroe and I were the only ones in Akiba to know of this information. The fact that a medium-sized guild could even do something like this is probably because of him. Wait a minute... He did say that he left for Susukino some days ago as a favor for his acquaintance to rescue a friend of said acquaintance... Could it be...? Yep. There's no other explanation. But why would he even bother to ask them to do something like this... Wait, those prices... Say even if they could sell a thousand of those burgers, and even if they could continue doing so, with the lacking amount of manpower to fulfill the demand, it would be hard... What's his endgame here..." he mumbled as he drank slowly from the bottled tea.

Wow, a tasteful drink. Nice food for my overdrived brain he thought before going back into his mumbling.

He then stopped his mumbling for a moment, and sent a message to Grim.

"Heh. For some reason, my predictions often come true..." She still couldn't get that part out of her head, especially the heh part.

It's been several days since they talked, days during which she spent most of her time on mastering the new knowledge, and learning few other things found out by accident. Things she'd rather not say outloud, that are connected to her being a vampire. - Weird subclass by the way, but since the update... surprisingly useful.

Nonetheless it's been a while since she came to town, for she had no use for food, and blood tasted far better than most of the things nowdays. But now it all changed, with one simple message:

To: Grim
From: Josua

I found something that might interest you. Come to my location now.

First she had to teleport near the entrance to the city, all while making sure no one saw it. Then the matter of pks, though small chance of it. Then it was time to open the map, and see his location. - a shopping district, ten minutes from here - of course she took first few steps and thought: Fuck it.

She quickly opened the menu, and wrote short message:
To: Josua
From: Grim

Sure, will be there, just don't get scared ^^

And sent. With message sent, she turned into a cloud of bats, a low level vampire skill meant for quick transportation. Bit tiring during the day. Alas it didn't matter.

Few moments later she arrived at the destination, and a message popped up: You have arrived at your destination! Be safe Hero!

What is this? A game... - Grim asked self, then realized it in fact is a game. Oh, well, she then thought and looked around.
The awfully big amount of people immediately caught her attention. All were lined up to get their... burger? What? Is this what he meant? Though question remains, where the heck is Josua? - Grim kept looking around, yet somehow couldn't find him, and her smell was obscured by that of a burger. Ugh.
OOC - Rushed post a bit ^^

His brain had finally settled down from the assault on his taste buds from eating the burger, though he can still taste some of it remaining inside his mouth and on his tongue. It really has been quite a while since he had a proper, good meal since arriving into this world. He then decided to buy another one while waiting for her to arrive.

After some time, he got another burger, but this time it was for her to try. He stood up from his chair, having seated himself again after finished queuing and purchased the burger, and looked around. He then saw Grim, who looked like an idiot in the middle of the crowd, obviously trying to look for him. He went to her position and immediately dragged her with him, without saying a word. This was simply him humoring himself with her being so clueless on where he was in the midst of the crowd.

"Sit down, and have this." he said as he handed her the burger. It was the normal Crescent Burger, since he didn't know if she could eat like him or not.

Why is it always so hard to find someone in the crowds - she asked herself, knowing well an answer to that rethorical question.
Being unable to sense him, nor see him made her almost give up, almost for then all of a sudden someone grabbed her, and she could smell a familiar scent.

Finally, she thought, while Josua dragged her somewhere. It wasn't pleasant, but making a scene now would only prolong being in between the people, and most likely would make the whole situation... awkward.

"Sit down, and have this." Josua said, all while handing her a burger. Grim raised on eyebrow, not sure how else to react, then raised it closer, winced lightly. - Fat, lots of fat inside one burger. Here she hoped it would be different here.

She sighed, and took a bite. Then another, it wasn't that bad.

"Not bad, but... I got addicted to something else. - she looked away, then added - How are you anyway?"

Josua was disappointed somewhat with Grim's lackluster of a reaction after trying the burger. Granted, her subclass is Vampire, hence she probably prefers more towards blood than normal food, and from her saying she's addicted to something else immediately rang that she's referring to blood.

"So-so, I guess...-" He said, pausing for a little before continuing, "Truth be told, I expected more reaction from you after trying that,".

He then went on further and said, "I say that because... In case you forgot, burgers like that, if you bought them from NPC stores are typically tasteless. And compared to this one, doesn't it has more of a something?". He's insinuating of the food having actual taste by this point.

"And also,-" he paused before continuing, "How do you think this food is made? Ring a bell?".

Grim ate the burger, had a vague idea what it was, and heard Josua saying he expected a different reaction than just saying:

"Not bad."

Well, there's little she can say, since she got that subclass, nuisance, but also fun. Sadly Josua still didn't realize one thing, and kept on talking:

"I say that because... In case you forgot, burgers like that, if you bought them from NPC stores are typically tasteless. And compared to this one, doesn't it has more of a something?" insinuation that food has a taste, Grim noticed it though.

"And also,-" he paused before continuing, "How do you think this food is made? Ring a bell?".

"I'm guessing it's connected to your friend Shiroe, and... stuff. Also noticed, It's just... not as good as blood now." She sighed, for once burgers were her favorite thing, and now it's just: Not bad.

Fuck, that hurts.

"Ding-dong. You get 100 points!" Josua comically said to Grim.

While being somewhat comical with said words, he was somewhat relieved that she at least paid attention. With that said, he prepared to inquire her of her thoughts on the matter that he's about to ask to her. He then took out an orange and peeled it, having it as a dessert to close off his wonderful meal.

"I only have an inkling as to why he'd do something like this, but as to his main motive... What's your opinion on it?" He then asked her.

"Because from the prices they're selling these things, they could gain a lot of money in a single day, putting aside whether they could keep up with the demand or not, but what for? I don't think Shiroe's doing this just to gain money. There's something behind it, yet I feel like there's something still missing... Something that will be his main motive, the main goal of all this endeavor. Hence my question." he then explained.

"Ding-dong. You get 100 points!" Josua tried to act commically, and to her he looked like a first rate meme with his hands up in the air, so she chuckled lightly.
Though seeing him so focused was... worrying, he looked as if something important was about to come up, and... he peeled yet another orange.

What are you? An orange addict? - she thought.

"I only have an inkling as to why he'd do something like this, but as to his main motive... What's your opinion on it?"

She smiled, and materialized apple out of thin air, surely giving creeps to those around them, who were not so focused on the food. Luckily they didn't stare for long.
Anyway it looked like he still wanted to talk, so she waited.

Hence my question."

"To take control over the rotting city? That's the short version of course." was her reply.

Now just ask... what do you mean Grim? Because why wouldn't you, right? - she thought.

"Take control of Akiba, huh..." Josua murmured after hearing Grim's answer.

That answer was surprising, though it wasn't really outside the realm of possibility. But if it's that, then what for? And as he pursued that thought, he began murmuring again.

"Considering it's Shiroe, it's not impossible for him to take over the city. But he always does things for a reason, with a goal in mind. Taking over the city is easy for him, but exactly what for? Is it something that has to do with that? I recall there's a certain guild that's less than pleasant in doing their things... What was their name again... I recall that they sold EXP Pots to those Black Swords bunch..." he murmured.

"Hammer? Pummel? Camel? Ah... Hamelin!" He slowly murmured their names before he said the final one somewhat loudly.

"But then, why would he target Hamelin? Is it only that, or... Is he trying to make something clear?" He then murmured even more.

He recalled that aside from that, he also remembered something that was surprising, to say the least.

"Hey, Grim. Try checking the building behind us. See if you toggle anything." he said to Grim.

He wanted to see on her thoughts of the... Toggle that isn't possible back when this was still a game. That toggle was the purchase of buildings/places that were not accessible during the game era.

"Don't have to. I already know." In all honesty, that's the first thing she did before the whole... change, at that time she was intent on making herself one of the rich people. Or something. It didn't work though.

"Checked it about a day ago, just out of curiosity - well, accident, she thought - with ability to purchase buildings, you could do a lot, and I must say... I wonder if you could restrict the ability to enter it."
That would be horrific if some specific buildings were bought, and then restricted.

"So... what do you want me to tell you?" If he wanted something from her, besides just toggling the things.
