Setting

Liberty:
A country in exile, their only lands now are the few Mediterranean islands that the EU granted them. Their largest land mass now is Sicily, where their military might has been gathering. This is a young nation, but its elected leaders are all progressives that believe strongly that peace through power is the right thing. To that end, they have created the Nexus frame. These units are each versatile, able to connect too many different detachable weapons. However, the true might of these experimental weapons are the pilots, who are chosen at birth for their genes, and then are recreated in the form of a computer construct AI. This AI is the new ???Mind??? of the machine they will one day pilot, or that was the plan. However very few of the subjects actually complied with their AI, though one doctor trials did come up with something called the buddy system. (If you want to pilot one of these frames that have an AI that your character can interact with you must ask for more info on the Buddy system.)Through this the pilots and machines have reached new heights in testing. But with real combat now here, how will they respond?

Location; Artemis Base, North Western Liberty
Time; Dusk
Squad; Regions

The base is on an up cropping of land which lies west of the canal. The base consists of ten hangers and three administrative buildings, as well as a large set of two walls that have sections topped with large Artillery and Anti-Air guns. The buildings are arranged in a basic L shape with the hangars all on one side, along a run way. The three hangars at the base of the angle are the largest, each clearly containing a large cargo like aircraft. The other hangars are taller but less wide. A few scattered “Chicken Walkers” (the basic form of Zeus units) and a few Farms are seen moving about the base. As the camera pans from the sky it comes to a lower pan to show a slender black spire that is endlessly tall (the elevator)
Scene shifts to a basic crew lounge, where several people of various genders are seen talking to one another and just relaxing. The camera focuses in one group of ten people, six of whom are playing a game of cards while another three watch. The last stares out the window at the far western horizon.

Crew member who is playing cards; “Damn it, nothing again! I fold
”
Crew member who is dealing; “he he, you just have no luck, I feel sorry for James, he is your nav-op after all.”
Crew member standing behind other player put him in a head lock; “That’s right, after all if you mess up Duo I die too!” others laugh and the one in the chair tries to tap out.
One of the women who is seated playing leans back in her chair to rest against the window and looks around toward the man who has had his back toward the camera and is looking out at the horizon. In the back ground we see one of the players show their cards and shout out “Royal Flush!” The dealer yells in response, “What! We aren’t even playing that game you idiot!” the woman smirks and looks back toward the man staring out the window and addresses him, “Captain?”, then looks out the window herself. Camera pans to look out window as well, he see a dark wall of cloud on the horizon. Several bright flashes of yellowish light are seen. “Hmmm, big storm, look, it even has lightning.” Group playing cards looks as well, but everyone is still giggling from the prior events.
“It’s not lightning
” the man in the window says. At this the whole room goes quite, several of the people who were around the table gather near the window. “Those are muzzle flashes
Roux, contact the hangar, tell them to have our units prepped, rest of you gear up!” he orders. Screen goes black.

Briefing 1

“Well, we knew this was coming eventually, and it’s not the first time you’ve been in combat. But, that should mean that you’re well aware of the fact that this isn’t going to be easy. When you get to the supply crew in the hangar the crew chief is going to give you a quick over few of some of the new features. Your piloting a Frame that is equipped with special boost properties. And your unit has the newest array of weaponry. Your mission is to guard the base while we move the squad of the X-01 Frames out of here; those units are the most important thing this base has. We need to get those units out of here and to the Anchor Base so we can send them out of the nation to the EU. That’s why we are going to full sortie; your primary directive is to hold the enemy off for ten minutes, enough time for us to get the units loaded up. You and your squad will be our front line units, you’ll be up against almost 35 Zeus class and 15 other Frames. This is a large force of UWP soldiers, and finally the catch comes into play. The enemy forces are an advance unit that have the support of 5 Volcano Artillery guns, these things are at the back edge of the combat zone, and will be raining hell on us from afar. I’d actually suggest you hit these first, and hit them hard. Take them out first and fast then get back here with the hope that the bases auto defenses are still holding. Assuming that’s still the case hit the enemy in tandem with your squad. You can issue them orders following the briefing, and if you so desire, order a full frontal or flank assault instead of the plan I mentioned. Your choice really, but remember; ten minutes at least, otherwise Liberty will fall before we can save the people. That is all Captain
”

Mission 1

As the squad mounts up a large explosion rips through the ground just outside the hangar Gabriel’s squad is in. Gabriel calls out, “it’s time to move” and the four machines to his left move off, finally he too moves out onto the front line. The last thing seen before the unit is sent into battle is one of the planes being loaded with several large canvas covered trucks.

"Major van Matteus, our forces have yet to meet the enemy. However, several Frames have been deployed, and intelligence has informed me that a number of trucks are being loaded and deployed as well."

Elrich glanced out as he heard the name. Years of perfecting his fake identity meant that he responded to it just as well as he could respond to Elrich von Richt. It was almost as if he wasn't disguised as the nonexistant Vincent van Matteus; he was Vincent van Matteus. "All very well, Sergeant...those trucks must be containing our target," There was no trace of an accent in Elrich's voice as he spoke English like a natural; he had spent years getting rid of the accent as well. "Rainier's squad will attack their base directly, something of a diversion. Keep the Frames stationed there busy. Alles's squad will accompany Beria's squad to rout the Frames that are on the move. I'll take on the Frames escorting the trucks, and then Alles, you get your squad back here so we can remove the target back to the UWP.

A series of affirmatives passed through the comm system, and a number of Frames began moving off. Elrich allowed himself a moment to consider it. They were after a powerful weapon Liberty had created; some kind of revolutionary mech. Elrich's corp had been dispatched. The 'Red Corp' as it was known was a collection of some of the UWP's most talented and skilled pilots; a force to truly be reckoned with. But none came close to the Red Menace, the Red Demon of the UWP, Vincent van Matteus--Elrich von Richt himself. Only Harbinger Heirarch had ever been able to defeat him, back when he was a student at Hates academy, and even that was only in the beginning. Hierarch had betrayed the UWP, and though Elrich had liked the 'Old Dog' and respected him, Elrich had to cement his loyalty to the UWP; it was key to his plan. In the case that Hierarch was actually stationed here, Elrich would have to kill him.

The Rot Sieger, the infamous red Frame of the Red Menace, began to boost in the direction of the trucks and the Frames accompanying them, drawing out a beam saber and the experimental beam rifle as it did so.

“Good to see you back Colonel,” said the sergeant in the Liberty Uniform said as he headed over to the Flay, “Wow, musta been some fight, but hey at least you got ‘em.”

‘Where is CSM Kingsley, Sergeant?” Gabriel was tired and as he put his foot into the rest on the cable and lowered himself down he saw the small crowd of mechanics gathering around his battle scared unit. He had looked for his crew chief but couldn’t see him in the pack of people. It was then that it struck him; his crew chief may have been on the second transport. Though most of the base personnel had fallen back in ground vehicles the higher-ranking staff and the Nexus units were removed by airlift. Kingsley was the senior enlisted of the base, and may have been on the transport.

“Well um, ya see sir he uh-“

“He’s right here,” came booming deep voice of a large dark skinned man behind Gabriel, “Good to see you alive Colonel.” The man saluted along with the rest around Gabriel.

Gabriel faked a smile and saluted back before moving forward and shaking the CSM (Command Sergeant Major’s) hand. “It’s good to see your alive Kingsley, who else made it?” Gabriel asked glancing around at the many unfamiliar faces, he saw one here and there that he recognized, but most of them were unfamiliar and young. He only saw enlisted from Artemis, and here and there he could also make out a few pilots who were there two, though most of them were Warrant Officers.

“It’s not good sir, seems you’re the only commander that made it out of there alive. Captain James made it half way but his machine had been heavily damaged, when we finally got here and opened his cockpit we found he had died of his injuries and his Frame’s Autopilot had guided the unit here.” The man said as he waved a few men toward the Flay, these men immediately got to work assessing the Frame’s condition, “The entire command staff was on the transport plane that Horus shot down, and the squad leaders for the most part fell in combat. You’re the only one left now sir, and it appears that you didn’t make it out of there on skill alone.” He said indicating to the cracked crystalline shell that the Rod Sieger had driven its fist through and the Right arm sword, which was missing most of its upper half. “He put up one hell of a fight; if I didn’t know better I’d say he was Vincent van Matteus, the UWP’s top ace.”

“That’s exactly who it was,” Gabriel remarked, though Kingsley honestly didn’t look surprised, “Where id Duo and the rest of my squad?”

“They’re up on C-Deck, waiting for a debrief I think. Your squad managed to come out of there with all the pilots intact,” Kingsley whistled as he got a damage list handed to him by a young private, “Wish I could say the same for your Frame, this is gonna take awhile.”
Gabriel said thank you to his crew chief and started walking toward the main building. It had been some time since last he had been here. Anchor base, the most powerful fortress in Liberty. If the Red Corp, or anyone for that matter, wanted to assault this place they were going to need a lot more firepower. For one thing, several forts still stood between both sides and this base, and for another the whole area was within the firing range of Station One’s cannons. The Liberty forces were ordered to fight until their bases were on the brink of defeat, then gather up all experimental data and scrub their bases before evacuating here to the Head Quarters of the Liberty government. This place was massive, and each base from the outer line had its own whole area here to store their units and personnel. In this way, even if the nation faced this kind of strike by anyone, they military would remain for the most part stable.

The lift that Gabriel stepped into had no buttons on the wall, instead it read his I.D. code and after he spoke the words “C-Deck” began to move to the upper floor. It was here he had started all of this. With a meeting with the President and all, his daughter volunteering for the Nexus project, all of it. He had crossed the border as a defector from the UWP, and was arrested moments later. Though he had legitimately left the UWP, the government had “suggested” that he remain in the country after his retirement. However a tip off from an old friend in the military informed him that the government was planning to have him killed, not wanting a man of his knowledge to be left unchecked. To escape this he had crossed the border illegally and was caught soon afterward, but when the Liberty forces discovered who he was, they decided to offer him a job instead of deporting him.

He was surprised when the lift slowed and came to a stop one floor below his targeted deck, in honest he hadn’t really thought about the number of other people who must be here on the base, with Liberty’s forces falling back every minute. Still, the face that he saw when the door opened was not an unfamiliar one; it was actually the last face he had seen that he knew besides those in the hanger. “Duo, I see you’re doing well.” Gabriel said casually.
“Uh, Colonel, hello sir I trust you’re doing well.” Duo stammered as he hastily made to salute.

“Oh please Duo, can’t you be less formal?” A feminine voice spoke from the other side of the door. Gabriel almost couldn’t believe his ears, a girl who had to be only 20 or so entered the Lift and smiled at the Colonel; she didn’t salute, despite being clearly a lower rank, and instead hit Duo upside the back of his head. He dropped his salute and rubbed his head with a whence. “Seriously, I’d think the love of my life would have a bit more backbone then that when it came to facing my dear old dad.”

“Mar-Maria” A shocked Colonel looked from Duo to his daughter, Maria Hierarch, and back. He knew they were dating, had been for about 7 months now, but he was sure she had been evacuated to elsewhere. Her hair was golden and long, save for the three strips of silver that fell back along her smooth hair. They were the only indicator that she had been in the Nexus program. Duo had a similar strip along the left side of his head”

“Come on Maria, you can cut me some slack there, you didn’t see what he did to Vincent, I don’t want to be next.” Duo joked. Gabriel was again reminded of how that fight had gone down. So many had said “Good job taking down the Ace.” But he knew full well that Vincent was alive and kicking. Besides he was too busy trying to keep Maria from beating the cap out of Duo for being such a pansy on the way to the squad room that he couldn’t really pay attention to all the congratulations he got from passersby. It was big news, the two Aces’ of the war had faced off, and though they both knew who had really won each side would herald their soldier as a hero.

When they got to the squad room Duo and Maria went in, but Gabriel hesitated. A thought had occurred to him and he answered the confused looks of his men by saying, “I need to submit my report, I’ll see you all later.”

“Wha-“ was all Maria said before the Colonel shut the door and headed back to the Lift. He had some digging to do.

“Welcome Colonel Hierarch,” the tall and tanned man in the suit said casually as Gabriel floated through the door to the center of the Orbital station. This was the highest security room in the whole country, the Presidents war room. The man who had addressed him was none other than the 16th President of Liberty. The men were standing around the table in the middle of the room, holding on to the bars that were around them to stay in place. “We waited for you.”

“Thank you Mr. President, I apologize that it took me so long to get to this room, it seems my cover ID set off one of the alarms.”

“Just your luck Gabriel, getting caught with false papers, I guess karma finally caught up with you.” This time the voice was low and rough, instead of being light and calming like the President’s, and came from the broad and scared man in the corner. “I’d think you would have chosen to keep one identity, but maybe people just don’t change.”

Minerva wasn’t the only in the world who didn’t trust or like Gabriel and the fact that he had betrayed the UWP, this man was one of them. “Thank you for those words of wisdom General Bartle, I’ll be sure to remember that for the next time I’m in combat.” Gabriel said with a wide smile and a cheery tone of voice. The General just scoffed and leaned back against the wall in the weightlessness.

“Moving on, I believe we were discussing what to do about the lines. We have just started the final evacuations and they should be done in three days, so we are faced with two choices.” This time it was Colonel Michael from before who spoke. Several of the other men in the room (12 in total) nodded or grunted agreement.

“Yes, we can hold the lines were they are for as long as possible and seek diplomatic options, or
” A man in a green uniform said indicating to the photomap on the table that showed the current battle

“Or, we can pull back immediately and stage a last defense here at Anchor with all our forces.” Michael finished as he tapped a few controls and the map showed all the Liberty forces instead gathering around the base of the Elevator.

“Well, as a Diplomat, I’m all for the first option, if we have enough time I feel we may reach an agreement with at least one side. Though after meeting with the NAC commander, I must say I highly doubt they will stop their advances. Perhaps the UWP will-“

“No, they will not stop, I can assure you that, we don’t have any chance of diplomacy.” Gabriel interrupted as he floated along the wall with his arms crossed.

“General Bartle looked at him with fire in his eyes and sneered, “Oh please, spare us Gabriel. It’s not like you’re an ambassador, how can you tell what they will and won’t do. You were just a tool to them after all, like you’d know anything about how they truly think.”

Gabriel was already agitated over the events of the previous day in Germany, and now this desk officer was about to make the soldier give him a taste of real combat. However, a smooth voice interrupted his train of thought, “That’s enough Bartle.” It was smooth but stern, clearly coming from someone who knew he had the man on a leash, namely, the President, Hugh Construct. He wasn’t the usual figure head placed in power by the ruling party, and had managed to control the nations more radical elements since his term began 5 years ago. “I know you dislike the fact that the Colonel is from the UWP, but I value his opinion on a matter such as this above anyone’s. We have to face the fact that he has more battle field experience than anyone here. Pleas continue Gabriel.”

“Thank you sir.” Gabriel said with a grateful smile as he kicked off the wall and headed to the table. He inserted a personnel drive into the system and brought up a hologram of the elevator as well as the station and front lines. “I’d say your best bet would be option two, if we can conserve our forces, we may be able to hold this line long enough to gather our military and make an escape to Sicily. If we can-“

“Wait a moment Colonel; are you suggesting we just leave without finishing the fight? If we did follow your plan, we may be able to hold the line until the two forces start fighting each other, then we can push back against them and-“ Bartle had interrupted him.

“No, that won’t work.”Gabriel said quietly.

“What, and why not?” the general countered.

“Because, they are not after the land just to reach the other side, they are after the elevator. They are still in a near Cold War state, but they are actively fighting us to get their hands on that technology. That is their whole reason for being here now, why they didn’t leave after the Letters were proven to be false. Don’t you see that fool?” Gabriel spat back, he had had enough of this man.

“Watch your tongue, Colonel, or I’ll rip it out of you.”

Gabriel saw the General, who was much bigger than him floating toward him, but he knew full well it was a bluff. So he called it. “I’d love you too try.” He said as he kicked off and floated right up to the General and stop just short of the man’s face. “Where did you get those scars anyway? A Car accident I suppose, cause they sure as hell aren’t battle scars.”

The General went to grab Gabriel by the collar and swing at him. He hit Gabriel full force in the face, but as he pulled back to hit again he found himself frozen. The man was much large then Gabriel, and had just hit him full force, but it didn’t even stun him. He just sat there with a defiant look on his face. Sure his glasses were gone, but he had shaken of the hit like it was nothing. “My turn.” He said, and with one foot anchoring him to the table he punched the large man straight in the face, knocking out two teeth as it flung him against the back wall.

The nearly destroyed wreck of a frame called Panzer Behemoth seat motionless the right side cannon was gone having been crushed by falling rabble from the Pillar. As for the other side cannon and the four on top they all appeared to still be in place meaning the frame could still be a threat if it was reactivate.

Inside the pilots’ cab all the screen flashed the words “System Failure” over and over in white letters on a bright red background. Bathing the cab in red before going dark then red again, but there was no movement from the pilot of the frame who was still tightly strapped into the chair his head tilted forward his helmet still tightly closed.

With a jerk the pilot woke to the noise of the speakers begin repeated over and over. Lifting his right hand he pressed it against the face plate of his helmet as his left hand reached out pressing down on a few keys causing the computer systems to reboot. It took only seconds for the computer to shutdown then reboot as all the screen went black then light back up a full scan of the frame was taking place leaving the pilot a minute to recover his senses.

The first thing he did was remove his helmet which he was quick to throw into the bottom two seats of the Zeus which normally would carry and three man crew the pilot of this frame had all the controls reworked to be ran by one pilot, now with the helmet gone he rubbed his eyes as the computer read off the readings from the scanners.

“ Starting frame wide scan.

“Alright lets see about getting the comm. back online first.” Reaching out the man began striking the keys of a console. The screen to his right flickered for a moment turning from a pale blue to a light green as another small screen came up inside it this one scrolling with a mix of letters and numbers. Turning from the screen and key board the man would let the computer finish working on restarting the comm. System, as for his self he turned to another screen raising a finger to the screen he pressed down on the screen then dragged his finger to the right causing a small box on the screen to become larger. Turning from the screen he took hold of the drive controls and pulled back on a handle then pressed down on it.

Outside the frame the left foot rose up a couple of feet then slammed back down onto the street sending out a loud boom that could be heard for a long ways off. Inside the frame the screen on the mans left side light up for a brief moment giving a slightly detailed map of the surrounding area. On the display he could tell there was a couple of other frames in the surrounding area some of which was ground units there was also a sky borne frame as well. However, the display didn’t give him any clue as to if they was allies or enemies so he had to get his comms’ and weapon systems back up and running or as close to full power as he could.

After a couple of minutes passed the comm. system came back online filling the cab with a loud hissing noise which made it clear that the relay atop the frame was gone. This was a problem as it meant long range communication was out of the question with out some kind of repairs done to the relay. However he was able to still send short range transmissions but without knowing which channel to use that could be more harmful to him then useful so with that he cut the comm system back off.

Picking up one of the many keyboards inside the cab, he pulled it over to his lap and began typing away at it the many monitors inside the sealed box began to light up as commands were being entered. It took only moments for the first command to go through as a loud groaning sound came from the back of the heavy frame. The sound had been made by the particle generator as the engine tried to start the generator back up so to supply power to the main cannons. The next command to be sent out to the frame was for the blast shields which slowly slide back into the haul filling the cab with natural. Pausing for a moment he took in his surroundings as best he could without having to leave the frame.

The city was truly in ruins now what with the fighting having taken place then the pillar having came down there was little more then the shells of empty buildings standing all around leaving the surrounding void of any life that he could tell. At this his heart sank as he hoped that the innocent had escaped in time. His attention returned to the key board once more as he began entering commands once more working towards starting up the frames main scanners as the generator had roared to life and was already building up energy pockets.

With a soft hum the Panzers’ main scanners came to life as they linked up with the UWP’s orbital satellites giving Dominik a good view of the city as well as some of the troop placements. Even with the scanners he still had trouble seeing into some of the areas as the clouds kicked up from the combat, Pillar the buildings that had been badly damaged collapsed into the streets. Using the targeting systems of the satellites he located a group of UWP frames that was meeting up near the western side of the city. As he moved the bright red cross hair over the city he would pause for a moment, having came to rest upon what was clearly a carrier belonging to the Liberty nation. The thought of opening fire on the carrier did cross his mind for a brief moment having moved to rest upon the main guns firing trigger.

Looking once more out the cab of his frame towards the now empty streets of the city he gave it a second thought before drawing his hand from the firing trigger. Taking hold of the movement controls Dominik turned the heavy frame around and started towards the location of the other frames that he had spotted on the screen.

With each ground shaking step taken by the heavy frame the surrounding buildings creaked and groaned a couple of which collapsed in on themselves as for the times it looked as if he would be unable to his way around a collapsed building or even a section of pillar debris this would be when he made use of the remaining grenade launcher. Firing off one of the drum sized rounds into the object causing an explosion thus removing the problem from his path.
