Sydney exerts a level of confidence that has always made it difficult for her to not do well socially. She believes that it's easy to convince people that you're better than them if you truly believe that yourself, and it's a motto that's proven to be pretty successful for her. She isn't afraid of speaking her mind or voicing her opinion, even if it is an unpopular one. She doesn't mind public speaking, confrontations, or publicly humiliating or ruining someone who has done her wrong. She has a reputation of being heartless and cold, and it's not exactly a lie. In order to maintain her spot at the top, Sydney has learned that she has to set an example for people who think that they can cross her. She doesn't like to be tested, and though she thrives on competition, she thrives on it in a sense where she likes competition that she knows she's going to win. It can be a tight race, but she has to win at the end of the day, if it's a competition that she's actually invested in. If she wants the crown, she's going to get it, and playing dirty isn't above her. Though she gives off a very effortless sense of control and to many, perfection, it's not as easy as she likes to act that it is. It can be stressful and morally testing, because while she can play the "heart of ice" card in public, it's harder to sit with when she's alone with nothing but her thoughts.

While she has a reputation of being a bitch, and she honestly doesn't mind that, she is protective of her friends and will stand by them. She's fairly controlling of those in her inner circle, but a lot of this is a result of her living by the "you're judged by the company you keep" saying. She feels like the people that she associates with represent her, and even if she knows that they're amazing people, they have to look and act the part of the elite when they're with her. This definitely allows her to look superficial, and it is superficial, but that doesn't take away from the genuineness of the friendships. Sydney is loyal to her friends and will protect them with every ounce of energy she has. Growing up in The Upper East Side, she knows that it's hard to find true, genuine friends who can be trusted with everything. There are tons of social climbers, opportunists, back stabbers and fakes among the bunches of girls who attend prep schools and even though Sydney is at the top of the social charts right now, she is still somewhat cautious around some of the girls around her. That only means that those who she are close with, are basically family to her. She never had any siblings growing up, so her close friends are the closest things to sisters and brothers that she has ever had, and she treats them like family.

Her rise to the top of the social ladder probably seemed like an easy climb, and Sydney likes to act like it has been in order to assert her dominance over people, as if there was no question that she was cut out for the position. Realistically, though, she's a human, and being involved in the rumors and drama has always been draining to her, too. She stands by her claim that that she's too classy to ever physically fight anyone, but that doesn't mean that her claws don't come out in a verbal sense. Her calm and collected front seems to disappear when she's pissed off and she's known to insult people below the belt. It's not uncommon for her to start vicious rumors about girls and guys who she feels like have wronged her. The violation can even be slight, something that the person thought was a playful joke, but if you catch her on the wrong day or in the wrong mood, she has the capability to take it very personally and react ten times more offensively than the offense warranted. Although her position at the top does give her a lot of power, it has also caused her to be somewhat paranoid. When everyone knows your name, there's always someone talking about you and Sydney always fears that someone's going to spread something about her that will cause her to lose all of her friends. She knows that it's a silly fear, especially now that she's a senior and she's maintained her power for this long, but especially coupled with the insecurities that she feels over her mother's growing verbal abuse at home, it's hard for her to not worry sometimes. With this in mind, Sydney's actions always seem to be calculated. Whether it's something as simple as inviting a weird kid to one of her parties or purposely talking to someone else's boyfriend, her actions usually serve a bigger purpose than what they seem on the surface.

✦FAMILY✦
Sydney's immediate family consists of her mother, Elizabeth "Liza" Persson and her father, Stefan Persson. She has no siblings, something that she often disliked as a child, but has grown accustomed to now. Her relationships with both of her parents are strained, but in different ways. She and her father get along quite well, but he works endlessly, and therefore, Sydney only sees him a couple of times a month, really. Her mother is at home far more often, and the two of them butt heads quite frequently. Her mother struggles with alcoholism, and though it's something that she has always managed to keep under the wraps publicly, to protect her family's image, she has a tendency to drink heavily in the privacy of their own home, and her drunk side is closer to being verbally abusive than it is maternal and loving.

New York has always been Sydney's home, and as the only child of one of the wealthiest men in the world, she definitely fit the definition of a child who grew up with New York being their playground. From a young age, she was taught that rules didn't apply to you if you had money. If you life dealt you good hands when you were born, and you ended up popping out of the right womb, you were set for life, or at least given a head start that most of the world didn't get. Although her life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, there's no denying that Sydney has had a lot handed to her. Her kindergarten tuition was equal to the cost of some college tuition, and her nannies had her fluent in Swedish by the time that she was five. She had vacation homes scattered across the globe and traveled to more countries by the time she hit puberty, than most people would see in an entire lifetime.

The opportunities that Sydney was granted, just because of who she was born to, were endless. Many people living on the other end of the financial spectrum would imagine that that alone would be enough to give anyone a perfect life, with no complaints, and yes, Sydney is very aware that she's lucky. At the same time, things were never perfect for her, and she became aware of that at a younger age than she would have liked. She was only around eight years old when she became aware of her mother's drinking problem. A lot of people will turn to the bottle after a traumatic event, and while Liza didn't grow into an alcoholic because she lost a parent or a child, or anything that dramatic, finding out that her husband had been cheating on her with various women was enough to kick start her bad habit. It didn't help that her family history also included a few alcoholics of its own, but Stefan's infidelity was definitely what started the nasty habit that would quickly grow into an uncontrollable illness. Sometimes, at dinner parties with close friends, guests might notice that Liza would drink a few more glasses of wine than she should, but for someone with such a big problem, she did do a good job at keeping it hidden from the public. Her reasoning behind it was that she had already failed enough, by being cheated on.

While Stefan was a businessman, the CEO and founder of H&M, Liza had left behind her journalism career when she decided to get married and become a mother. Her career and purpose, in her mind, was now to be a perfect upper class housewife and to her, being cheated on signified that she had failed at that. The last thing she needed was for the rest of the world to think of her as a drunk too, and so she did a pretty good job at maintaining her composure at social events, and only getting blackout drunk at home, or after those parties. While it saved the family's public image, Sydney often felt the wrath of her mother's intoxication at home. Liza never became physically abusive but she certainly wasn't kind when she was drunk. It was often then, during those late night drinking binges when she would criticize Sydney for any and every thing. Her hair wasn't brushed straight enough, or the answer to a trivial question she had given an acquaintance at the dinner party hours earlier wasn't polite enough. She wasn't befriending the right people at school, or she wasn't a grateful daughter. Even at such a young age, Sydney had a level of self assurance and confidence, to a point where if these insults came from a classmate or stranger, she wouldn't have been bothered. However, hearing it from her own mother, and one who had particularly always been very kind and doting before the alcohol kicked in, made it different. It forced Sydney to become more insecure of herself, at least when it came to criticism being given to her by people she actually valued. It shaped her personality, and being very sensitive or at least attentive to criticism that her friends and family give her is something that still affects her today.

Her parents are still married to this day, and though Stefan swears that he hasn't cheated since Liza uncovered the affairs years ago, Sydney isn't quite as convinced that this is true. Still, she maintains a better relationship with her father than she does her mother, but that also might be because her father frequently travels for work, so they just have less time to butt heads. Her relationship with her mother is far more rocky, and that's one of the major reasons why Sydney values her social life, and the praise she gets socially, so much.

Unlike the rest of us, sex, lies and scandal never take a vacation. Instead, they take the Long Island Expressway and head east, to the Hamptons. Some would say summer is their busiest season. Think Park Avenue, but with tennis whites and ban de soleil. The players change, but the game remains the same. Though school may have started last week for our favorites of the Upper East Side, we all know that summer doesn't truly end until after the annual white party hosted by Bernard Arnault. It's the Met Gala of the summer, and the most exclusive Labor Day party on the island. Didn't get invited? Don't worry, I'm sure you're not the only one. Besides, you know that I'll be there, ready to catch you up on all of the colorful drama that's sure to unfold in this sea of white.

Jameson's house was usually a good spot to pregame at, be it his one in the city, or out on the island, because of how lax his mother was. AJ had learned years ago that James' mom, Alexandra, was the cool aunt of the family, and that James was lucky she was his mother. AJ loved his own mother as well, and honestly probably qualified as a mama's boy in a way, but there was no denying that James could get away with murder in his house. While AJ had his mother's affection like most son's did, he still had rules to follow and he knew his boundaries and limits. Jameson never really seemed to have them. He wasn't a disrespectful or rowdy kid to begin with, but Alexandra was the type of mother who doted on him at every opportunity given. Never once had AJ heard her yell, and she always went out of her way to make sure that everyone was having a good time. She was a really sweet woman, and although her pushover tendencies probably didn't always make her the best parent of the year in terms of enforcing rules, they worked in AJ's favor since he and Jameson's friends frequently needed a place to drink at, and she never seemed bothered by the boys doing it there. Had the Arnaults party today not been one that attracted many of the affluent adults of Manhattan as well, then The Airth's compound on Long Island would have been the perfect pregaming spot for many of the popular kids attending. However, because it was Mr. Arnault and his new wife who were hosting it, AJ's parents, as well as Jameson's mother (without her husband, due to him being away on business) would be attending too.

Because The Clarke's didn't own a summer house in the Hamptons, but had one down south instead, AJ's family was staying with his cousins as they frequently did. While James' parents were okay with him drinking underage, AJ had to be more careful about it. His parents weren't crazy strict, and every now and then he could get away with trying a glass of wine at dinner, or having a beer with his father at a sporting event, but he knew he had to be respectfully careful and discrete about it. That was why now, as his parents and younger sister hung out inside the house somewhere, AJ didn't feel guilty about drinking a beer with a lime as he laid out by the pool with James. Had Alaina been there, he would have expected some comment about how stupid they looked sunbathing, but without her there, he didn't have to worry about the shame. In fact, he was actually enjoying the afternoon of lounging poolside. It was a nice break in the day, after spending a few hours at the Southampton's Bathing Corporation, a pristine and exclusive beach club that their grandmother was a member of, where he spent a few hours playing tennis with James, and before they had to get ready for The Arnault's party.

He doubted his family would be heading to The Arnault's right at four o'clock on the dot, but he wasn't sure whether he was expected to be there then, or not. Usually, to parties like this, he would show up with Sydney. Since Adeline was her best friend, though, there was always a chance that she would be there before the party started. He wouldn't know, though, since it had been nearly three days since Sydney had answered his last text. He had called and texted her numerous times since then, and at this point, he could barely even remember what their last fight had been about to warrant this silent treatment. He knew that if Sydney knew about him sleeping with Esme last month, the retribution would have been much harsher than this, so he assumed that she really was just unnecessarily pissed that he had cancelled a date night they had been planning on last week. Although the public wouldn't know it, it seemed like he and Sydney were fighting more often than they weren't, and AJ hated that.

To: Sydney
Are you really still ignoring me? Image ImageImage Image Image

After he sent a text to her, he leaned over and finished his beer, purposely pushing the empty bottle closer to Jameson's side of the table in between them, just in case his parents happened to come outside. "Day three of Syd ghosting me..." he said aloud with an annoyed huff. "I really don't get girls, man..." At that thought, he also decided to text Esme.

To: Esme
Hey you on the island yet? W Syd?

Also, only really because his phone was out and in his hand, he decided to send his sister a text too. He knew that the only reason for why she wasn't there was because she and their mom had gotten into an argument earlier that day, and maybe it was that mama's boy instinct in him, but he felt like his sister was dragging this too much. Plus, the fact that he and James had had to entertain Isabelle for a little while today, while Alaina had been off doing whatever she was doing with her friends, still got on his nerves, despite how much he loved his baby sister.

To: Alaina
Hope you plan on apologizing to mom for being such a bitch Image

After secretly spending her entire summer at an eating disorder treatment center in Illinois, being back home was a transition. She had only gotten home on Monday, and although school had begun on Wednesday, she hadn't returned to school yet. She had been sick earlier in the week, and though it was pretty clear at this point that it had only been her anxiety making her sick, and not an actual virus, it was impossible for her father to force her to school when she was working herself up into getting physically sick because of the nerves. While it probably seemed extreme, Adeline wasn't good with change. It was one of the reasons for why transitioning into living at the treatment center had been so difficult for her, and coming back home after such a long stretch was no different. Coming back home to a new living situation, with her father having gotten married while she was gone, only made the transition seem more extreme. Additionally though, Adeline had the added element of having to stress over being gone for so long, simply because such an unexplained disappearance wasn't acceptable in the social scene that she was involved in. Had she had any forewarning about her father planning on sending her away, she would have made up some excuse for the disappearance that would be to come. She didn't have that luxury though, so now, she could only trust that her family had really kept up the lie that she was away in California for most of the summer visiting her mother, and in France for the rest of it, visiting her father's extended family. They had claimed that she was taking a break from social media, purging herself, if you will, though anyone who knew Adeline knew that she would never willingly do something like that. She knew that her close friends had to know that the story her family was selling was a false one, but now that she was back, she didn't know how to explain the truth to them. Sydney, in particular, was who she was worried about. She was her closest friend, and one of the most trusted people in her life, and yet her struggle with her weight had always felt like too big of a secret to share. Adeline had never wanted to admit that she had a problem, so that too, had allowed her to remain mum about the problem. Even now, when telling the truth was probably the only option that she had to explain such an inexplicable disappearance, she felt sick over having to admit to where she really was. When something made her anxious, Adeline's go-to response was to ignore it instead of facing the responsibility, and that was why she had refused to even touch her phone upon returning to New York, until today.

She sat on one of the high-top chairs at the island in the kitchen of her summer house silently, although the house itself wasn't silent. Thankfully, the kitchen itself was empty for the time being, aside from Simone, the family's chef. Down the hall there was another kitchen, and that was the one that was typically used to prepare big meals for parties like the one her family was currently preparing for. Because the party was being hosted outdoors, most of the event planners and staff involved with setting everything up were out there, and luckily for Adeline, she was pretty sure that her father and stepmother were somewhere out there as well. She was only just beginning to get over the bad mood that her father had put her in earlier in the day, after someone had informed him of how she had thrown out the meal that was supposed to be her lunch (and despite having zero evidence, Adeline was convinced that that someone was Grace). That was the only reason for why she was currently sitting in the kitchen. She had been forced to sit down for lunch #2, and this time, Simone wasn't going to let her cheat like she had with the salad that she had originally been given, despite it not fulfilling all of the requirements of her post-residential meal plan guidelines. Now, she was waiting for Simone to finish the grilled cheese sandwich, that would also have turkey and a sliced tomato inside of it. She was sure that it would taste good, but eating a 345 calorie sandwich, especially when bread was one of the foods that she dreaded the most, made her feel very uneasy. She had just finished sending out a text to Sydney, Esme, and Olivia, knowing that it was a pathetic and lackluster message to send after literally not being heard from for months, but not knowing what else to say, when her sister, Naya and Alaina entered the kitchen.

To: Sydney, Esme, Olivia
Can't wait to see you guys today ImageImageImageImage

Soon after Naya had joined them, the girls headed downstairs. Charlotte was feeling her high enough that she didn't really want to start drinking... until she remembered that she had to spend the entire afternoon and evening socializing. It would have been bad enough if this party was at someone else's house, but because it was her father's name on the invitation, she had to be extra careful about seeming all prim and proper to represent the family properly, and that just wasn't something she was comfortable doing. It wasn't in her nature to be that person. Adeline seemed to handle it fine, and she definitely was the one who had the friends that her father probably appreciated more, but Charlotte had never caught on to the allure of putting up a fake image just to impress other people. It wasn't fun, and it felt like a waste of time. Thinking about that made alcohol sound all the more enticing. "You're drinking, right?" she said, cocking her head to the side to look at Naya. It still felt necessary to ask those kinds of questions, though it probably wasn't fair to Naya that she had such an ingrained reputation of being sweet and innocent. Charlotte asked because of that, but also because she knew that if she was drinking alone, her father would have something to say, but that if Naya was doing so too, he wouldn't be so quick to criticize. She was his new stepdaughter, and although Charlotte wasn't like Adeline, calling out any "injustice" the second it was noticed, she wasn't blind to how her father was putting in an extra effort to make Naya comfortable and happy in her new home. It was surprising, but it was a sign that he liked Grace for more than just her youth. "I'm sure Simone will make us food and drinks," she said reassuringly, as they headed towards the kitchen.

Despite the party not starting for another couple of hours, and it being apparent in her own attire, and Charlotte and Alaina's too, that no one was dressed for the occasion yet, Adeline couldn't resist commenting on Naya's very showy outfit. It was something that was probably understandable to be worn lounging around the house, but it wasn't something that Adeline would ever wear, and as most people knew, she couldn't comprehend that other people would think differently than her. "Are you and Grace heading back to the brothel you guys came from, or did you finally find out that my dad signed a prenup, and that if you want anything close to this kind of life after he dumps her in a year or two, that you better use these parties to 'network' and find yourself a sugar daddy of your own?" It was an unnecessary dig, especially considering that Naya literally had not said a word to her, and that in the past five days that Adeline had been home, Naya and Grace had been nothing but nice to her. Adeline's mood seemed like a wild card lately. There were moments when she was cordial towards her new stepmother and stepsister, and others when she was venomous. The latter usually came about for no clear reason, though it was typically Adeline projecting her frustrations about other things onto them. They were an easy scapegoat to release her anger when she was feeling anxious about her weight, or the thought of returning to school, or still feeling frustrated over her entire summer being absolutely destroyed. In reality, there was a logical part of Adeline that did exist, that wasn't bogged down by her drama-queen antics. That piece of her knew good and well that there was no reason for her to lash out at Grace and Naya, especially considering that the rest of her family, including her mother (who Adeline was very close with), had taken to them quickly. Being irrational was part of who Adeline was, and specifically because they had been introduced into her life during what was probably her lowest point in terms of her struggle with her eating disorder, she was just more inclined, now, to associate negative feelings with them.

Charlotte hadn't been expecting to see Adeline in the kitchen of all places, but she was less surprised by the words that came out of her mouth, than her physical being as a whole. The comment towards Naya warranted an eye roll from her as she passed the island, ignoring her twin but glancing back at Naya, "Are you as shocked as I am that she managed to add a few new words to her vocabulary this summer?" she asked. Had Alaina not been standing there, then Charlotte surely would have made an insensitive added comment about how she thought she had only added some weight, not vocab words too, but she was decent enough not to go that low in front of someone who Charlotte assumed had no knowledge of Adeline's situation. She was just about to round the corner to approach their chef, who, by all means was a nice...though sometimes cold seeming, when she decided that Naya probably had a better chance of getting them a meal. "You ask," she mouthed to Naya, smirking and waving to the woman whose back was towards them. Simone was probably busy right now with a bunch of tasks lined up by her father, and because Bernard seemed against saying no to Naya right now, she was sure that that message had been passed along to the staff as well.

Sydney's summer has been no less spectacular than one would have imagined it to be. Between trips to Cannes, Ibiza, Paris, Sydney, and a plethora of other fun places across the globe, she had found time for weekends in the Hamptons, boozy brunches, and shopping trips galore. Her Instagram page spoke to the most photogenic of those fun moments, and though only her friends would know, there were many other fun moments that were less picturesque. Those were the moments that were more raw and emotional sometimes, and other times, just silly and crazy. All of it had made her summer one for the books; ups and downs included. It could have been better though, and that wasn't just Sydney's perfectionist side speaking. She had spent the entire summer without a single interaction with her longtime best friend, Adeline, and had then discovered through Esme, that Adeline was actually in a residential treatment center that offered treatment for eating disorders, mood disorders, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, trauma and other related disorders. It was a revelation that starkly conflicted with the narrative that Adeline's family had given her when she demanded some answers. Her father had claimed that she was in California visiting her mother, and purposely purging herself of social media and her phone, while her sister obnoxiously insisted that she had been an unfortunate witness to a murder and had been placed in a witness protection program somewhere in the Midwest. Not knowing the truth would be infuriating for anyone, but it was especially infuriating for Sydney, who could easily be billed as a control freak. It was something she typically wouldn't even deny. She liked being in control of things. She liked knowing where her friends were, and what they were doing that was so important, that it prevented them from being by her side at a moment's notice. The intensity of that feeling only increased when it came to Adeline, because Sydney had been immeasurably close with her since they were children. She was her best friend, to just suddenly not hear from her one day, and then receive a slew of lies about why she disappeared abruptly, with no warning, for months, wasn't a feeling that she could describe without coming across as being too emotional, or too bitter.

In the end, Esme had given her enough reason to believe that Adeline actually had been in Illinois for the entire summer. It was surely more realistic than Adeline, of all people, deciding to take a summer away from social media. Sydney wasn't a monster, and so when she found out about it, her heart did hurt for her best friend. She felt very guilty about it, because as her best friend, Sydney should have noticed that something was wrong enough to warrant such a dramatic situation. She should have been there for her while she was struggling. She should have forced her to recover, somehow, so that this never happened. She did feel bad for Adeline. She still did. However, Sydney wouldn't have been Sydney if she hadn't found a way to treat the situation coldly too. She wondered why Adeline hadn't trusted her enough to tell her about it. She told herself that Adeline probably didn't value their friendship as much as she did. She convinced herself that the girl had to have known that she was going to be spending her summer away, and had simply opted against sharing that information. She was angry and offended, and especially once Adeline had failed to show up for the first few days of school, those feelings had overtaken the hurt that she felt for her friends.

Her plan had been to ghost Adeline in response to her ghosting her all summer, be it by her own will, or not. She wasn't going to acknowledge the girl, even at her own party, until Adeline acknowledged her and offered her a sincere apology, and the complete truth. After flying out of the city with Camilo and touching down in the Hamptons, she had been en route to her house there when she received the first form of contact from Adeline in literal months, and she couldn't believe how casual and generic it was. It had been months since any of them had heard a word from her, and she had the audacity to send that out?! Let alone in a group chat, as if Sydney was only as important as Esme and Olivia were? To put it simply, Sydney was fuming, even if she remained silent in the car as she stared at it, contemplating her next mood. "Change of plans," she said abruptly, speaking to the driver of their town car, though her eyes didn't move from her phone screen. "Take us to 6 Olde Town Lane instead. You can wait outside, it'll only be a few minutes." She wasn't going to actively offer the driver, or Camilo, more of an explanation than that, though she was sure Camilo would ask. Sydney wasn't dressed for the party, and admittedly, it take her a long time to get ready for things, but she absolutely could not not blast Adeline, in person, after that text.

To: Olivia, Esme
I have to take care of business before the party, or else I would insist we get ready together. Send pictures of your outfits before you leave!

To: Esme
I might kill her. I'm going there now because I can't believe that she just sent that after disappearing for an entire summer. Since you were the only friend courteous enough to keep me in the loop, feel free to join.

Admittedly, Sydney had only really grown close to Esme this summer. The girl had been a part of their clique for a substantial amount of time by now, but with Adeline gone this summer, things had just fallen into place with Esme picking up that next-in-line role. Sydney was pleased... surprisingly so, even... with how well Esme managed to do in the role. She was fun to party with, to shop with, and even to vent to, when Sydney was feeling more vulnerable than she was comfortable with. The fact that she had proven to be useful and well connected, especially with the Adeline information, had definitely made her seem far more of an equal than Sydney had ever seen her as before.

They were only a few minutes or so from Adeline's house anyway, with how close her house was to Sydney, so once they pulled through the private gates, she glanced to Camilo. "You can wait in here if you want," she said, simply because she didn't think he wanted to come inside and awkwardly wait while she sorted things out with Adeline, though she knew she probably should have explained why she had taken the detour here because maybe if he knew that they were going to be walking into drama, he actually would have wanted to wait inside of the car.

The trip out to The Hamptons had been pretty uneventful. Being able to take a seaplane from the city, and calling it uneventful, was a pretty good representation of where Camilo sat in the socioeconomic world, and how he sometimes took that for granted, but for him, this was nothing special. His family didn't own a house in the area, but so many of his friends did that he was familiar with the Hamptons community. Had Sydney not agreed to let him come with her, he would have found someone else with a house to spend the few hours before the party with. In fact, he was sure that once he let Austin know of his whereabouts, he would end up getting shit for spending time with his girlfriend, over him. He and Sydney were close friends though, and nothing more, so he didn't think that it was as weird as AJ, his other close friend, probably would. While he would have enjoyed hanging out with his guy friends before the party, he always appreciated Sydney's company. Even being friends with her, it was rare that she was free in the sense that she wasn't with one of her girl friends, so it was hard to pass up a chance to hang out with her, even if it wasn't in that "Oh my God, she's Sydney Vale!!!" sort of fan girl way, but rather a more authentic friendship way.

Camilo had been in the middle of texting his mom back to let her know that they had gotten there safely, when Sydney abruptly told the driver to take them to a different address. Because of the street name, he recognized it as the Arnaults', and he glanced at her in confusion at that request. They had over an hour before the party started, and while Milo knew that Sydney was close enough with Adeline (and just cool and important enough in general) to show up as early as she wanted, this hadn't been a part of the plan. He was already dressed in white for the party, simply because he knew he would have felt more inconvenienced by having to change once they touched down, but he still wasn't mentally prepared for the party. He didn't even intend on pre-gaming and getting drunk, since both of his parents were going to be there (though they were running late due to his father's work), but he still needed to get into that socialization psyche which he didn't have now. Plus, showing up early meant that he was going to have to awkwardly be there without any other real guests. He was friends with Adeline, and he was sure that with such a big party and a grand estate like theirs, that there would be tons of people there now, getting every last detail set, but he still knew that he would feel impolite showing up earlier than expected. He wasn't going to argue with Sydney, or even question it though, because he knew that once she wanted to do something, she was doing it regardless of anyone else's opinion.

"I'll come," he volunteered, albeit in an unsure manner, once they had pulled through the private gates of the Arnault house, and the car came to a stop. Though he wasn't sure what they were actually here for, especially since Sydney wasn't dressed in the party attire she was planning on wearing, he figured that it would be less boring to see why, than to sit in the car and wait. Following Sydney to the front door, he wasn't surprised that she was let in with ease by the person who answered, "So, uh, why are we here so early?" he finally asked.

Sydney didn't mind Camilo coming inside with her, but that was mostly because she didn't plan on actually spending much time inside with him. She would leave him in a common area space, and talk to Adeline in private. That was the plan, at least, but as a familiar looking member of the Arnault house staff, whose name Sydney couldn't place, let them in and informed her that Adeline was in the kitchen, the plans changed a bit. Or they would, even if Sydney didn't realize it yet. "I need to speak to Adeline. Someone left her manners, and apparently, her brain, in California, and being the good friend that I am, I'm going to make sure we fix that right now," she explained curtly, prolonging the lie that Adeline had spent the summer in California with her mother, despite now knowing that it wasn't true. Even if she had every intention of blasting Adeline for not being truthful with her, she didn't think that Camilo had any reason to know the truth. Despite feeling selfishly entitled and offended by all of this, Sydney was still capable of recognizing that an eating disorder was a sensitive topic, and something that Adeline clearly and understandably didn't want the world knowing about. Milo was probably the sweetest guy that Sydney knew, but it wasn't about him. It was about Adeline... or at least it was supposed to be about Adeline, since it was hard for Sydney to feel like this wasn't also about herself, now that Adeline apparently thought that she was only as important as Esme and Olivia, and that such a bland and generic text was an acceptable first form of communication after dropping off the face of the planet for months.

Despite knowing that Adeline had a twin sister and a stepsister, she expected the girl to be alone in the kitchen. Not seated at the same island as Charlotte, Naya, and Alaina. Given the circumstances of all of this, it was even more surprising to see her with a plate of food in front of her, and call it cold, but Sydney made sure that her eyes were trained on that food for longer than necessary as soon as she was close enough to the four girls and the cook standing a few feet away. She hadn't even noticed that the member of the house staff that had let her in had followed closely behind her and Camilo, struggling to keep up with Sydney's purposely fast pace, until the woman caught up with them in the kitchen and spoke. "Miss Arnault, guests are here for you." It was probably the greeting that was needed for Sydney and Camilo's presence to be noticed, and although she glanced back at the woman with an annoyed expression, as if she didn't need anyone other than herself to announce her presence, she was secretly grateful for it, because she didn't know what to say in that immediate moment.

While part of her was overjoyed to finally see her best friend after months of wondering if she was okay, she didn't show that. Her face remained fairly emotionless, her lips turning up only slightly into a cold smile that was only present because Adeline wasn't alone. Yes, it was great that Adeline looked fairly healthy, and that she was even alive, and mostly, that she was apparently eating, but again, it was important to remember that despite being a good friend at heart, Sydney was a conceited person in the sense that she was the most important person in her world. Adeline had been through hell and back this summer, but Sydney couldn't focus on that when she felt like she had been disrespected. "Since we have so much catching up to do, it only seemed appropriate to stop by early," she stated, addressing Adeline in a manner that definitely seemed cold considering that they were best friends who hadn't seen each other for so long. "I can only imagine that you have some exciting stories to share about the witness protection program that your sister told me you were placed in. Are we going to walk and talk, or should I take a seat?" she said, walking towards the empty chair that separated Charlotte and Adeline, and raising her eyebrows in a nearly challenging motion as she studied Adeline's expression. She purposely ignored the three girls beside her, though it was clear that she was willing to use their presences as a leverage tool, because she was sure that Adeline wasn't going to want to do this "catching up" in front of them, and Sydney didn't want to either.

Carbs were a struggle for Adeline, even after months of intensive therapy. There were certain foods that she had grown more comfortable with while in treatment. Before going, she had a very limited set of food that she felt comfortable eating when she did allow herself to eat. Her safe foods included most raw vegetables, most fruits, rice cakes, and plain baked chicken. She would eat other things from time to time, but not without feeling anxious and guilty afterwards. Treatment had helped her quite a bit, though she still had ways to go. She had learned that dipping her celery sticks in peanut butter wasn't going to kill her, and made it taste a lot better, and that getting her calories through a real meal, like salmon and vegetables, was much more enjoyable than being forced to get them through drinking Ensure every day, like she had to do in the beginning of her treatment when she was still set on refusing some meals. She was doing better now, and even she recognized her own progress, but despite knowing that Simone hadn't doused this sandwich in oils and fats, it still made Adeline feel uncomfortable when it was set in front of her. Eating around other people, especially Naya and Alaina, who she didn't know well enough, made it even worse.

At the very least though, everyone in this room knew that Adeline had a problem with food. Naya and Charlotte didn't know that Alaina knew, but Adeline did. Alaina was seated three seats away with her, with an empty seat and Charlotte in between, and the girl wasn't paying her any mind, but it didn't stop Adeline from feeling like she was somehow watching her. Knowing that Alaina knew, though, made Adeline feel somewhat better, because at least now if she was called out on something by Simone, like how she was pulling the sandwich apart and first only eating the tomato, it wasn't like her secret was being spread to anyone who didn't already know it. "ArrΓͺte Γ§a," {Stop that} Simone said to her, flashing her a predictably stern look, when she had moved away from the stove for a few seconds to get plates, and had witnessed Adeline dissecting the food on her plate. She was well aware that she wasn't going to get away with tearing the sandwich to pieces and somehow making it look like she had eaten most of it, but she still felt better tearing off small pieces at a time to eat, rather than just being a normal person and taking a bite out of it.

Charlotte smirked at the girls, mostly because she didn't doubt what either of them said. Naya was definitely too much of a good-two-shoes in Charlotte's opinion, to ever be able to keep up with her, even with Charlotte trying to push her towards the dark side more strongly, and Alaina was just as unenthused by parties like these, that it didn't seem improbable for her to find eating tacos and going to bed to be a better plan. Especially with their high setting in, it didn't sound like a bad deal to Charlotte anyway. "My bed is big enough for the two of us," Charlotte pondered, "And this is Naya's first year as an honorary Arnault.." she continued, leaning forward to look past Alaina and at Naya more directly, "So, you must end up on your own today." Even if socializing with the type of people who would be coming to today's party wasn't Charlotte's cup of tea, it wasn't going to be as bad as she was chalking it up to be. Her father would probably bother her in the beginning about being polite and mingling with his guests, but after the first hour or so, she would be able to disappear with her own friends, and her father would be too consumed with his (and hopefully, a lot of wine too), to bother her.

Only a few more minutes passed before Charlotte watched Simone turn the stove off, pour the seasoned meat into a bowl, and place it in front of them, along with a series of other small bowls with various toppings, and hard and soft taco shells, so that they could make their own tacos. Although it was probably Simone's way of saying "do it yourself", since she couldn't verbally say that to them, the make-your-own setup she had produced was preferable in Charlotte's mind, anyway. No one ever put as much cheese on her tacos as she actually wanted, so now, she was able to pile the toppings as high as she wanted, and she wasted no time in doing so. It had served as enough of a distraction that she didn't even look up when one of their staff members entered and said something about guests. Though the "Miss Arnault" line meant that it was just as possible that she was speaking to her as it was Adeline, Charlotte wasn't expecting anyone, so she didn't waste any energy in looking. When she heard Sydney Vale's voice, however, she turned her head to confirm that it was her. "I don't think I know who I was more grateful to not have to deal with this summer, between the two of them," she muttered to the girls beside her. Sydney never really bothered her, likely only because she was Adeline's sister, but that didn't mean that Charlotte liked her. They kept out of each other's way for the most part, but Charlotte wasn't blind to how controlling and domineering the girl was. She had such an esteemed reputation for a reason, and Charlotte could respect that, but it wasn't one that she was envious of like so many other people. Since Sydney was already starting with her, albeit it indirectly with the reference to the witness protection program lie she had used earlier this summer, Charlotte didn't hesitate to return the favor though. "Aren't you forgetting to say hello to your sister-in-law, Sydney? Unlike the Perssons, the Clarkes and the Arnaults don't keep secrets, so take a seat and tell us what's on your mind," she said, patting the empty seat beside her that Sydney was lingering beside. She doubted that Naya or Alaina wanted to deal with Sydney, but Charlotte couldn't help being obnoxious. She could tell that Adeline was startled and uncomfortable, so why not possibly make everyone else as well?!

Startled really was the best way to describe how Adeline felt when Sydney came in unannounced. Before this summer, Adeline had never spent more than a couple of days without speaking to the blonde, who was undeniably the best friend she had had since she could comprehend what friendship meant. So, in addition to having to adjust to every other element of being abruptly uprooted from home and thrust into a treatment center, it was difficult for her to adjust to spending months apart from her best friend. She loved Sydney and had missed her a lot, and so while she had been incredibly anxious to see her again, only because she knew that the blonde would expect an answer for her disappearance, she had also been incredibly excited to see her. In the moment though, that excitement seemed non-existent, and that was mostly because Adeline was caught off guard, and it didn't take much to sense the contempt in Sydney's voice. The presence of Camilo, someone who Adeline was pretty close with as well, and had wanted to first see on terms when she was more prepared, only threw her off more. Suddenly, she felt like eating ten of the sandwiches in front of her would be less anxiety-inducing than dealing with this, and her sister egging Sydney on wasn't helping matters. She purposely kicked Charlotte in the leg as she turned in her seat and stood up. "Hiiiiiii... no, no, we can walk and talk," she said, clearly anxious as she nodded with certainty.

"Pas avant d'avoir fini de manger." {Not until you finish eating}

Simone's voice was serious enough that Adeline didn't ignore it like she typically would have. "Je vais me tuer et vous blΓ’mer si vous me faites rester ici en ce moment," {I will kill myself and blame you if you make me stay here right now.} she snapped back, turning her head back towards Sydney a second after speaking, only because she knew that there was actually a chance that Simone would get angry at her for being disrespectful. Adeline feared few people, because she struggled with the concept of having to listen to authority, but Simone had been a consistent enough presence in her life that she had probably been reprimanded by her more times than she had by her actual father.

Simone didn't respond as Adeline hurried out of the kitchen with Sydney, though her expression spoke to how the girl was definitely screwed once she ended up alone with Simone again. Charlotte was mildly disappointed that a confrontation hadn't occurred, but with an amazing looking taco in front of her, she couldn't be that upset. "For the non-French speaking folks in the room, that was my completely mentally-stable sister using her infamous, 'I'm going to kill myself if I don't get my way and I'll blame you in the suicide note' line," she explained in a sarcastic, yet nonchalant way, because Adeline's dramatics were really too be expected at this point. Looking to Naya though, she smirked and said, "What do you think Grace would do if you ever used that on her?", before turning to Alaina, "And I don't know how you deal with AJ dating her. I mean, I guess it works to your benefit. I've never read about Gossip Girl trashing you in her blog, so Sydney must be using her connections to keep her sis-in-law safe. God only knows that you deserve to be dragged through the mud for making such a weak taco when you work in a fucking taco shop," she teased, as she looked at the taco on Alaina's plate, which was quite possibly only bare looking because she hadn't finished making it. That didn't stop Charlotte from being obnoxious and annoying and literally flinging a spoonful of shredded cheese at Alaina, though. Maybe she needed to take a few more hits, she minutely considered, because this troublesome energy she was suddenly embracing probably wasn't going to do her good once guests started arriving...

I'd offer an A 4 effort, but we're also havin tacos if u wanted 2 chill here til later?

It was probably for the best that Naya had her phone as an element of distraction when Sydney and Milo arrived. Just as she was prepared to set her phone down officially and start making her taco from the materials Simone provided, her text tone for Derek went off and Naya divided up her time between answering him and making her first taco. She did, however, look up in the midst of forming that one level of meat at the bottom of her crunchy shell when she heard Sydney's voice. It just so happened that Naya promptly looked back down and refused to make one commentary, not even a chuckle for Charlotte's benefit when her friend acknowledged the queen bee. And judging by Sydney's already frosty tone, it was probably for the better. Naya wouldn't go so far as to say that she was afraid of Sydney. That would be a dramatic assertion - a valid one, but dramatic nonetheless. Naya likened it to intimidation; it felt less mortifying and less like she was feeding into the ego she had heard Sydney had. Despite being the same age and in the same grade, Naya innately felt their differences whenever she was in the same space as Sydney Persson and while she had yet to actually make a fool of herself in the girl's presence, she was adamant about not giving the girl any type of fuel in the near future. So, other than shaking her head at Charlotte trying to goad the girl, between her conversation with Derek and fixing up a bomb ass taco to chase her margarita, Naya was content to pretend as if Sydney hadn't even entered the room.

"Ummmm, considering the fact that Alaina works with authentic Mexican tacos on a regular, I'm pretty sure yours is the weak one since real tacos don't come with all that cheese," Naya commented smartly, adding a dollop of sour cream to her creation which included lettuce, cheese, and salsa. The salsa already had tomatoes in it and Naya liked tomatoes, but there was only so much she actually enjoyed before it became too much. Naya still preferred the authentic tacos she'd had in the past to the ones most American households made, but she had no issue with eating what was provided. Especially when it smelled as scrumptious as it did. "Knowing Gigi, though, if I ever said that to her, she'd probably just volunteer to help just so she could get the insurance money," she added and bit into her taco, a few pieces of lettuce and cheese falling back onto her plate. Despite still having a little bit in her mouth, Naya was just about to take another bite when her text tone went back off and she hurried to snatch up a napkin, set her taco down, and was wiping at her fingers and chewing what she had left when she peered down to see who had messaged her. Her cheeks were set aflame immediately afterwards.

Naya didn't know how long this James-Airth-knowing-she-existed thing was going to continue, but it never failed to still surprise her when he wound up texting her. It was always foolishness on his part, but texting her nonetheless. And it was confusing. And aggravating - very aggravating. And apparently gross today, judging from the mood she was guessing he was in from the text. Naya drained half of her margarita and was actually very much prepared to text him her very thought process, that he was gross and he honestly needed to leave her out of his thot ways, but liquid courage was a mischievous bitch that had her smirking and producing something else entirely.

Alaina shrieked when she felt a handful of shredded cheese come her way. She turned to Charlotte with a devilish grin, her arm beginning to extend towards the lettuce before Naya's witty comment allowed her to feel sufficed enough to sit back down and place the lettuce on her taco and not on her friend. Naya was probably right, even if she was joking, but Alaina actually didn't care that much. Simply because she loved tacos just that much. She obviously knew a bad taco when she saw or tasted one, but when it came down to corn versus flour tortilla or hard or soft shell, she wasn't so particular. She wasn't very elitist about much, and tacos were no exception. She was very flexible with this odd liking of hers, though that wasn't to say that even she had her moments where she wanted a real authentic taco. Most other times, it was just a matter of nuance, like now. She had taco materials in front of her (and the margarita was an obvious bonus) so she was elated. So much that the guilt she had been feeling just seconds before was slowly beginning to dissipate, for the time being, as she went ahead and grabbed a hard shell taco and began preparing that one.

Just before she was able to complain about the lack of la salsa verde, to her surprise, Sydney and Milo looked in, the former looking as though someone had already done something to piss her off. It went without saying that Sydney wasn't her favorite person, and even Alaina could admit to being cold to the girl, even when Sydney herself was being cordial (which was always around family). Alaina wasn't going to take that into consideration though, because she felt that being kind to your boyfriend's family was a requirement, not something that deserved recognition, which was part of the reason why Alaina was purposely cooler to the girl in the presence of family. But even Alaina had her limits and she wasn't so pressed about the girl dating her brother after years of them dating. That wasn't to say that she had warmed up to the girl, but rather the sour taste of the girl's presence and involvement in her life (albeit it only being through her brother, and even then contact was minimal) had become tolerable, just not enjoyable. Oddly enough, Alaina typically felt more inclination to be cold towards Sydney when they were around her family. It was really just Alaina playing her cards and using the home turf to her advantage, though she was never so out of line as to really be abnormally crass to the girl. It was just her way of challenging the girl and not for any particular reason. It wasn't a matter of power or revenge, but Alaina didn't respect the girl enough to not use it to her advantage. And more often than not, Alaina was the one who ended up paying for it because there had certainly been more than one occasion where she was scorned for not being the friendliest to Sydney when she was their guest. Now, she was more or less used to the girl and she tended towards just ignoring her presence altogether, save a few slick remarks that Alaina was never known for being able to withhold from no matter who the person on the receiving end was. In the Arnault's house, she knew better on how to act. Sure, Sydney wasn't her favorite person, and after having a few clues that her and her brother's relationship was more on the toxic side (though she didn't even consider AJ's own involvement in it) the girl definitely didn't fare better off in her mind, but with that being said, Alaina didn't despise the girl. She wasn't going to really go out of her way to make it known each time she saw her that she disliked her. The reasoning for this was less congratulatory than it sounded, though, because Alaina could be very non-committal, especially when there was little benefit for her. And jabbing at Sydney every chance she got not only provided her very little benefit, but what little it did give was fleeting. It also sometimes came down to her mood, and Alaina firstly wasn't in the instigating mindset, but most importantly she had food in front of her. Her love for tacos far surpassed her disdain for Sydney Perrson.

That was why Alaina rolled her eyes at Charlotte and not at Sydney, and if the girl had been closer, she would had pinched her side because she didn't want to be acknowledged by Sydney just as much as she didn't want to acknowledge the girl herself. Luckily, her sister and the girl's puppeteer disappeared without much stir and Alaina could only shake her head in anticipation for what the rest of the day would be like because even she couldn't miss Sydney seeming very...Sydney to Adeline. It wasn't any of Alaina's business, and she didn't think it was anything deep, so she decided to mind her own business and focus on the food in front of her. "Dressed to impress Milo," Alaina said, though she turned to the girls with an amused smile that was obviously improperly timed because it probably seemed like there was some inside joke between the three of them that had something to do with Milo's attire. In general, Alaina didn't bother with the 'A-listers', nor did she ever refer to them as such. Of them, though, Milo seemed the least harmful. She actually thought he was really sweet and was sometimes confused on how and why he rolled with the people he rolled with. Her brother was obviously a part of that crew, but again, Alaina didn't see her brother as being as bad as the others in the group which was clearly due to her own bias, but she also felt like she crucified her brother enough about her affiliation choices. "Help yourself to a taco," Alaina said, scooting one of the plates forward just half an inch. "You know A.J. isn't here, right? He's at James'." She leaned forward to look at Charlotte then, her brow raised in slight confusion. "Wait, who all is coming?"

Though Sydney didn't expect anything different, she was pleased when Adeline seemed insistent on leaving the kitchen. Sydney knew a limited amount of Spanish; an amount that was impressive for someone who only knew it from school classes, but not enough to be called fluent, and she was mostly fluent in Swedish, but she didn't know French. She could pick up on a few words, simply from hearing Adeline speak to her father for years and years, and also from her own travels to the country, but not enough to truly understand quick back and forths, as was occurring here with Adeline and her chef. It didn't matter what was said, though, because without needing to make another sweetly-spoken threat, Adeline was leading her out of the kitchen. Sydney appreciated it not only because she wanted to speak in private, but also because she was in no mood to deal with Adeline's sister, who clearly was in the mood to put on a show today. Sydney had no problem with putting her in her place, but there was no denying that it was a more uncomfortable thing to do, given how close she was with Adeline. Unfortunately, the extent of their friendship had forced her to deal with Charlotte and her antics with little more than an eye roll.

She looked Adeline up and down as they walked upstairs to her bedroom. She looked healthy. She had put on a little bit of weight, maybe, but she was still stick thin. Had she been much thinner in the spring? Sydney normally thought of herself as being an observant person, and she was. How had she missed the signs? She had asked herself those kinds of questions countless times this summer, but it was hard not to run through the spiel in her head again, now that Adeline was standing right in front of her. She casually took a seat on one of the white chairs by the window once they reached the girls bedroom, and she smiled. It fell comfortably into place on her face, but it wasn't one that was necessarily there out of pure joy. In a twisted way, Sydney surely did like the feeling of power and control that this conversation came with. She had the upper hand, and Adeline had to answer to her, not the other way around. Typically, that wasn't something that Sydney liked exploiting when it came to her friends, but she felt like it was only fair given the lack of transparency, and in Sydney's opinion, disrespect and disregard that Adeline had shown their friendship this summer. "Did it only take a summer away for you to forget that I hate waiting?" Sydney said, breaking the silence that she felt had existed for a few seconds too long once they reached her bedroom. "One can only hope that you didn't forget how much I hate liars, too." She was going to give Adeline one chance to be honest with her. She owed her that much, at least, she decided.

ADELINE β–Ώ ARNAULT

Outfit
Location: Adeline's Bedroom
Dialogue Color: #7957C2

"I didn't have any choice in being gone all summer. It wasn't my fault." Adeline was very adamant in feeling that way, and in truth, she didn't have a choice. She didn't know that the private plane she was boarding in June was going to take her to a state where she would then be driven to a treatment facility. She thought that she was on her way to California to visit her mother, and she literally believed that until she got into the airport in Illinois and realized that she wasn't at LAX. To claim that it wasn't her fault was definitely aligned with her typical victim mentality. It was her fault that she hadn't accepted any of the preliminary help her father had pushed her towards a couple of months or so before that, and that she had continued to allow her illness to fester into something uncontrollable. She wouldn't accept responsibility for it, even today, but no one else could really be blamed for it.

At this point, Adeline wasn't necessarily opposed to telling Sydney the truth. It felt inevitable, to an extent, but additionally, she wanted Sydney to know. Despite the cold air that was suddenly filling the room, they were best friends. Adeline trusted Sydney. She told her nearly everything. The only reason that she hadn't told her about her illness before this summer, was because she didn't think she had one. She didn't think that she was skinny enough or sick enough to qualify as having an eating disorder, and she didn't want people to worry about her or try to regulate her. The last thing she wanted, really, was anyone judging what she looked like, and she knew that that was what was going to come out of revealing something like this. Now that she had been through what felt like hell and back, admitting to it was less of a burden, but she still didn't know how to actually say it. In the past few days, she actually almost felt like she had PTSD, as dramatic as that sounded, because thinking about how she had spent her summer almost immediately elicited tears and emotions from her. She knew that she didn't want to start crying now, but even if she wasn't actually upset, the anxiety that she was feeling made her feel like her throat was closing up, and that it was only a matter of time before the waterworks began.

She perched herself on the edge of her bed, her posture tight with tension as she looked almost everywhere but at Sydney. "My dad's new wife," she began, because she definitely was not in a place lately where she would consider calling Grace anything that had the word "mom" attached to it, "Convinced him that their summer would be better off without me in it. She basically dramatized an issue and claimed that I had some full blown eating disorder when it's never been that deep, and my dad tricked me into getting onto a plane that brought me to some treatment facility in Illinois." Okay, that wasn't that hard, she thought, but still, she didn't think that she could look directly at Sydney without crying until she had finished saying that. It wasn't a lie, at least not in her mind. At this point, she knew that she did have a bit of a problem last spring, at least by a doctor's standard, and not her own, but that was over and done with, she told herself, so she didn't want to make it seem like that big of a deal still. "And so that was where I was until this past Sunday, and I've basically been in bed since then. I just needed a few days to get myself together, which was why I wasn't in school, and I didn't reach out because..." This was another sentence that had her eyes drifting from the blonde, because part of her was sure that Sydney was more angry about her silence than her actual disappearance. "...I just didn't know how to like... explain myself. I knew you were going to be mad at me, and I obviously didn't want you to be mad at me, but I just didn't know what to say to, like, explain why I just disappeared like that. I just really don't want anyone finding out about where I was. It's stupid and embarrassing and I don't want people to think I'm crazy... I don't know." By that point, tears were streaming down Adeline's cheeks before she even realized it enough to stop them. She was an emotional person by nature, but stress always made it worse.

β•š THE QUEEN BEE ╝

Outfit: Here
Location: Adeline's Bedroom
Dialogue Color: #209DC7
As easy as it was to relic into the name "Ice Queen", and her reputation of being so controlled and cold that she seemed emotionless, Sydney had a heart. Especially when it came to Adeline, the closest thing she would ever have to a sister. While Sydney often probably seemed heart on Adeline (partially because she was, and partially because Adeline just tended to be so damn emotional and dramatic), she was also the person that Sydney would protect at all costs. It was sort of like those sibling relationships where it was okay for siblings to be mean to each other, but the second that anyone else did it, they deserved to be punched in the face without a single question asked. And seeing Adeline crying, despite Sydney feeling like it was unwarranted in the situation, automatically melted her ice cold heart. "No one's going to find out," she stated calmly, though notably softer than how she had been speaking earlier. "Esme knows, but only because Charlotte told her," she said. It was a lie, but she wasn't going to reveal how Esme truly knew. She didn't think that it was that deep, and she didn't feel inclined to protect Esme's source, but she didn't want it to seem like Esme had been trying to snoop, and also, Charlotte deserved a little extra drama in her life for testing her a few minutes ago. "Other than that, no one else will find out," she insisted. Despite loving Adeline, being comforting wasn't something that Sydney was very good at. It was hard for her to get all soft and mushy, and that was frustrating during times like these, when she knew that that kind of response was appropriate. "Seriously, please don't be upset and kill my vibe today," was the closest thing that Sydney could verbalize to mean "please don't cry, it upsets me to see you hurt".

"We do have some real catching up to do," she followed with quickly, deciding that a conversation change was necessary at this point. "I'm going to have someone bring my outfit over, so we can catch up while we get ready," she said, feeling comfortable enough with Adeline to not even ask permission. As she texted her driver to return to her house to pick up the pieces of her outfit for the party that had been sent out here a few days before, she noticed the text from AJ as well. She texted him back, before looking back to Adeline with a more genuine smile. "I did miss you. Esme surprisingly stepped up to the plate in many ways, but she didn't fill my Adeline void."

To: AJ
I'll put on a happy face for the party, don't worry. Just try not to be such a selfish and entitled idiot today,
because I'm not in the mood.
