"His name is Mr. Hyde! I've only seen a glimpse of him in the doctor's office! He truly looks like a dark man." the lead maid said; Mrs. Alberten. [Made it up] Mrs. Alberten was a chubby short lady who was like a mother figure to Mary; and was always there for her, helping her out alot since she was new to the household and she taught her tricks and things to how to work around the house.
"Mmm... I bet he's a formal man. To be an assistant of the doctor he would need to have a scientific interest and a formal dress." the butler said, a stiff and stuck up old man that didn't find Mary appealing and had been sort of rough on her. Mary kept chopping up the onions and carrots, sighing a bit as she kept listening and she poured the vegetables into the large pot on the stove.
"I heard he was staying at that snotty woman's place... where they have those prostitutes. I heard he was making a huge mess there." said another maid; one a bit older then Mary who shared a bed with her, and her name was Laura. Mary kept cutting and she then would put her knife down and wipe some sweat off her forehead.
"Mary. Would you please take that tea and bread to the Doctor's office. It's almost time for him to have his tea and snacks." Mrs. Alberten said sweetly. Mary had never delivered the tray to the Doctor's office. Mary picked up the elegant silver tray and made her way down the hallway and up a flight of stairs and down another hallway to a half open door. She walked inside, looking around the large office where she saw so many books and artifacts and elegant furniture. She slowly walked to a table in front of a cough and set the tray down and stood up straight, looking around.

The stress mounted until he stood up abruptly from the couch and strode over to the window, looking outside. It was a cloudy day, which seemed to aptly reflect the lack of productivity which was taking place inside the house. Jekyll had done almost no work at all, he'd just been looking over the accounts. Other doctors of course would hire an accountant, but what with the various dealins that had been taking place in his affairs...no, Jekyll had to keep this away from prying eyes.
There was a noise in the middle of the room, and Jekyll span around in alarm. What he was saw a pretty young maid bringing in a tray with his afternoon tea. He knew that there were some new staff in the house, but he'd assumed that he'd had sight of them all. Yet this girl he'd not come across before.
"Many thanks," he said, trying to regain his composure as he walked over to the couch. "have you been in my service long my dear? I apologise if I seem rude, but I don't believe I've seen you before. I can be very busy, but I think it's proper to at least know the staff by name. So then, you are...?"

She observed him carefully; looking over his hair color, skin color... even what he was wearing. Mary took pride in observing people; it was something she was actually good with. Mary would stand straight, now putting her hands behind her back as she waited for him to either further the conversation or dismiss her so he could be alone.

Jekyll knew of other homeowners who had a policy of hiring the prettiest girls who came looking for work. He imagined that anyone who saw Mary would probably think that he himself had adopted that same policy, though in reality he’d had nothing to do with the hiring process. But her fresh, young face would make a refreshing change to the stern, sour visage of Mrs Alberten; even though she was hired to do a job, not to look good, it was nice to have her brightening up the place.
“And certainly don’t worry about disturbing me,” he said, straightening up. “if I’m keen enough not to be disturbed, believe me I shall have already made myself truly scarce.”
He thought for a moment. The day was dragging so slowly, would it be such a bad thing to push the boundaries of propriety and ask a personal question of the staff?
“So Mary,” he said tentatively, “how are you finding it so far? Is this your first term of service in a private household?”

He gave a slight huff of mild laughter. He was certainly breaking with convention in saying such things, but it was a nice change to be talking to someone who wanted pomped up with their own theories and research, or trying to find technical faults in everything you say. But given the special...situation that had transpired lately, he would have to try to influence Mary’s areas of work so as to keep her out of potential harm’s way. He would really rather she not have to meet Mr Hyde...
“Well I shall detain you no longer,” he said with a smile, “I’m sure Mrs Alberten has you on a busy schedule. My thanks for the tea.”
With that he turned towards the window, and listened for her leaving.

"Come, dear. Time to make dinner." she said as she held the eel down. "Come hold this down while I hack off the head." Mary was turning pale as she slowly walked over and put her hands on the cold slimy eel that was wriggling around underneath and she felt her stomach churn. She looked away when Mrs. Alberten chopped off the head, and she instantly ran to the washroom and threw up into the sink.

Also on the tray were a few sealed letters. His eyes fell on one in particular; the handwriting on the front was all to familiar. With a sense of exhaustion and dread he opened it and removed the handwritter letter inside. After skimming the words for as little time as necessary, he put his hand to his chin and sighed. She was asking for more money. Not that the money was a problem; goodness knows if only the woman had a little more savvy and less scruple she'd probably ask for a lot more. But if anyone caught wind of the amount of cash that was being passed between them...it would be almost impossible to explain. Damn you Hyde! He was proving the be the most expensive addiction a doctor had ever fallen foul to...but the discoveries that could be made...
He brushed it off and tucked the letter into his jacket. He would stop by and visit her presently. Nobody else must know of this. Finishing his afternoon tea, he closed his ledger and filed it away in the safe.
