Master of Shadows Ch.1: A New Begining

Introduction

[So...I totaly have decided. Everyone making a character, you must use a Two Steps From Hell song as your theme song. Please note that you may have more than one theme song if you wish, but ONLY ONE of them, and one MUST BE, a Two Steps From Hell song. They are our music providers for this rp. Just type "two steps from hell" into youtube, and you'll get almost every song they've ever come up with. I'll provide a list of used songs in the rules section, just below the rules. Thanks!]

Renova...

This land, once lush and beautiful, is now dying…

Our great and mysterious forests are being stripped bare. The mountains, once easy to travel, even in winter, have become a barren, frozen wasteland, even to animals.
But why?

No one knows, not even our beloved King Edemir, who is the Master of Light, and able to see all within his kingdom.

Rivers and lakes have dried, and the very ground rejects all seed sown to plant. Fire ravages what is left of the farmlands. Our people starve, and the death toll grows greater in number with every passing day. Evil creatures from the ground below pillage and plunder, killing all who oppose them. To top things off, a plague which eats people from the inside out has begun to spread from our northern border. What is happening?

The people have all but lost hope, and finally, as the King himself begins to die of the strange plague, he removes his pendant to choose a successor. No heir was born to the throne, so he must choose. He sends out his guards to find the chosen one, the one who lead our people to rebirth.

~+~

So begins Chapter 1 of the Master of Shadows. In this chapter, we shall be exploring the now ravaged land of Renova, searching for the one who shall succeed the throne. There are many roles open and only a few that need filling permanently. I shall explain further. The Heir, three royal soldiers, the Queen, King Edemir, and the Master of Shadows must be taken in order for this to start.

Characters

-King Edemir: A wise man who inherited the throne from his father and claimed the power of the Master of Light, he can see all that goes on in his kingdom, and ruled wisely. However, he has now fallen victim of the strange plague and is dying. In a final act of desperation, he has sent his three best soldiers out into the land to find a suitable heir, one that will not abuse their power as a Master of Light, and who will save Renova. The Pendant of Light, as seen in the photo below, is the symbol of the King. The Pendant will choose its bearer, bestowing them with power in order to be the Master of Light.

-Queen of Renova: Wife of the King, this woman is powerful and strong-willed. She loves both her husband and her kingdom deeply, and will do whatever it takes to see that the latter survives.

-Soldiers: Can be any race and gender. They are trained in the ways of combat, and are fiercely loyal to their king. They know that the path ahead of them lies wrought with danger, and have accepted without hesitation. They know that if they fail, all is lost.

-Heir: Everything is unknown about this person, except that they must be true at heart, kind, and willing to die for the good of Renova.

-Master of Shadows: This person is shrouded in mystery, and has not yet revealed themselves as the one behind all of the misery that Renova faces. Their powers are also unknown.

Species

-Human: As the name suggests, they are the most populace race of Renova.

-Elf: Graceful and elegant, yet deadly in battle, these tall beings are at one with nature. They possess no magic, but there is no better race in combat.

-Shifter: One of the more useful races, they have most appearances of humans, yet they can change their form at will to any animal known to man.

-Mage: A gifted and sparse race, they can harness the energy of the universe to combat opponents, heal comrades, and twist the very face of the earth.

-Dragon: An old, ancient race, there are as few as twenty left. Old, powerful, and wise, these creatures rarely come out of hiding.

Image
Classes

-Commoner: They handle day to day trades, townspeople.

-Soldier: The backbone of the army, they live to fight.

-Rouge: The scum of most, they are thugs, thieves, and bandits. Get one who is in a good mood, and they sometimes can come in handy.

-Assassin: Most are usually soldiers, but some work free-lance.

-Master of Light: For the King only, they can harness and use all of light in any way they can imagine.

-Master of Shadows: Able to use the power of darkness at will, they are dangerous and the opposite of the Master of Light, and just as powerful.

Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
They drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
and came and killed those two dead boys."

Tezula Vladimer

Tezula sighed. The barren wasteland that they had been traversing for three days now was really getting to her. In an attempt to lighten the already dreary mood thanks to the rain, she began to sing.

She closed her eyes as her melodic, soft voice began to carry through the wind.

[-The Voice]

"I hear your voice on the wind
And I hear you call out my name

"Listen, my child," you say to me
"I am the voice of your history
Be not afraid, come follow me
Answer my call, and I'll set you free"

I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice, I will remain

I am the voice in the fields when the summer's gone
The dance of the leaves when the autumn winds blow
Ne'er do I sleep thoughout all the cold winter long
I am the force that in springtime will grow

I am the voice of the past that will always be
Filled with my sorrow and blood in my fields
I am the voice of the future, bring me your peace
Bring me your peace, and my wounds, they will heal

I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice

I am the voice of the past that will always be
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice of the future
I am the voice, I am the voice
I am the voice, I am the voice"

Her voice was soft, melodic. She herself was an alto.

Isaac Warren

Isaac heard Tezula's sigh and completely understood. It made his heart ache to see what was happening to his beloved kingdom. All around, there seemed to be nothing more but death and sorrow. And then, like magic, he heard Tezula begin to sing. The girl was great at singing, had she ot been a soldier, she probably would have been a performer. With his rich base tones, Issac joined her, a smile lighting his voice.

Vrael

Vrael sat atop a rock overlooking a stream, observing the unpolluted water in utter silence. He raised a palm, grabbing a crystal reed pipe out of nowhere. He placed his lips gently on the pipe and began to blow a strange melody, its lyrics echoing within his mind.

Once there were trees full of birds,
Meadowlands vibrant with flowers.
Carefree the songs our children once sang,
Gilding our minutes and hours.
Clouds came and covered the sun,
The breath of a baleful unease.
Turning to ashes, flowers in their fields,
Silence the birds in the trees.

Hidden so deep in veils of deceit,
Imprisoned in twisted spells of the land.

He stopped, putting the pipe on the boulder aand leaping down. He walked towards the stream, scooping up a handful of frigid water and dropping them with a splash.

Valshe

The man himself stopped at in the hallway, glancing out of the window at a sundial in the middle of a garden of pebbles. He squinted, but not being able to recognise the faint shadow, he pressed onward. The Master of Shadows... Who was he? Apparently sometime back, someone declared that a man was responsible of corrupting the land. How would they even know that? It would have been better if they had just blamed it on their gods or something but they have somehow managed to solidify some idea that the 'Master of Shadows' actually existed.

Valshe paused before at a small set of double doors leading to the King's chambers, knocking gently before pushing it open. "My lord, as you have asked, I have arrived to discuss matters involving the Heir."

Vierra Shaladon

This is just downright miserable. The never-ending landscape of destruction and, coupled with the downpour of rain, had pushed spirits low for the day, so much so that Vierra had been nursing agitation for hours. And on top of that, she was starting to get restless; travelling had always been particularly boring for her, the worst out of all parts of being a soldier (in her opinion). Especially when, as it seemed, nothing was changing. But what can I expect? Situations like these, travelling in (less) devastated landscapes had happened before. Absentmindedly, she watched as the rain parted just beyond an almost transparent layer of turquoise magic that had settled around her; a simple spell she had cast that kept her dry (on minimal use of energy), and that lifted her mood, ever so slightly, better.

As it was, Vierra had been recalling spells in (an effort to keep awake and occupied) when she heard Tezula sing, and then Isaac a moment later, in perfect harmony. Really, they're good enough to be professionals. As she relaxed upon listening to the song, a wistful smile found a way onto her face; it wasn't the first time that she had wished she brought her violin. Playing it along with their voices would've been a wonderful way to lighten her mood, or maybe the atmosphere. But it wasn't made for a soldier to carry around, and that had been all the convincing she needed to leave it back home. But what a shame. It's always fun to do an accompaniment for people as good as they are.

Shrugging away her thoughts, Vierra subconsciously touched the necklace beneath her shirt, suddenly coming up with an idea to make the moment a little better. Using as minuscule of an amount of energy as possible, she extended smoke-like portions of blue magic that heated the atmosphere above the chill of dreary weather; then made a larger, thin layer of almost-transparent turquoise that parted the rain. As it was, for a moment, the group would be warm and (just a little) drier, until the song ended. This much energy is easy enough to regain, but holding magic for long periods of time is crippling.

Content for having done something to make the day slightly better, Vierra relaxed and, gratefully, let the music wash over her negative thoughts. It was easy to forget the gravity of the kingdom's situation, just for that (albeit little) while.

Connor Smasliv

Connor shivered as he sat against the crumbly dry earth. Not much light made it between the two buildings his house was stuck between, and it seemed like the sun wouldn't shine for him. But that didn't stop him from turning his head and looking at his 3 younger siblings. He smiled as they breathed, their chests rising and falling as they slept. He never knew the time of day, but by the sun's height it had to be either the middle of the afternoon or early morning. Time was useless to those whose worries were so basic they were almost animalistic. But the look on their faces seemed to mask their hunger, their sorrow, their pain, and he loved them for it. Sielsta, his youngest sister, was the joy of his life: On days they got food, she would sometimes try to make friends with a bird or a rat by coaxing it with a scrap of food. Once she got a whole swarm of birds, and they sang for her. It was truly beautiful.

Something wet was running down his face, and he put his hand to his cheek to find a warm tear making a road down his face. He looked up, and realized why he couldn't check the time, nor what part of day it was: The sky was grey, the sun had disappeared once again and a drizzle began to form on the city once more. He hung his head, pondering his next move. They were nearly out of food again, and Mom wouldn't be paid for another week or so. And he was barely making enough helping on a farm. He had to quit that job a week after starting, since he needed to care for his sisters and brother. Con stood up, stretching slightly. He dreaded what he was about to do, for he stole just yesterday from a baker and fisher, the scene still fresh in his mind. He couldn't shake the feeling, every time he stole he felt like he was losing himself. He shook his head, and relit the fire with his hands. His magic was coming along, but to him it was useless. He couldn't change the state his family was in.

The best he could do now, was to repeat yesterday's actions, and pray that the country he loved would forgive him later.

King Edemir

It was cold in the King's chambers, maybe it was a slight draught, others would have said. But no, really it was only the king who felt cold, he was always cold now. It was that plauge that had done this to him. The plauge had covered his once beatiful land and killed anyone it infected, this included him. What was the point of being the Master of Light if you couldn't even heal people with that light. It was infuriating.

Suddenly Edemir heard a soft knock on the doors that lead to the outside of his chamber and a voice through the doors say.
"My lord, as you have asked, I have arrived to discuss matters involving the Heir."
"You may come in Valshe" Edemir said. He was sitting up in his bed, wearing plain clothes but an overly fancy blanket which was on top of him, covered that fact. He looked at his rapier which was by his side, he had kept it at his bedside for a while now and longed to be able to use it again. For now though he had to speak to Valshe, Valshe the Nobleman, Valshe, the man who once everywhile came into the castle for many different reasons, he normally came in on his own but today Edemir had summoned him to discuss about the heir, they all knew he was dying.

The thought infuriated him even more.
Damn this plauge he thought

Erella.

Erella sighed quietly to herself, her gaze trailing along the wastelands where they'd decided to set up camp. The rain had been a constant for the past few days, and was really begining to bring Erella's mood from just slightly upset, to rather depressed. While the young assassin did enjoy the rain, and the cloudy days, she found she couldn't handle too much of it. Sighing once more Erella shook her head as she turned her gaze back to her companions. A small, faint smile slipped across her lips as she heard Tezula begin to sing. The girl did have a beautiful voice. Soon she was accompanied by Issac, and together the two sounded amazing. Erella had no doubt in her mind, had things turned out differently, Tezula could have easily been a performer of some sort with the voice she had.

Turning her gaze now, from Isaac and Tezula, she allowed their voices to help ease her mind while she turned to looked towards Vierra, the youngest of their small group. She seemed to be in her own world, surrounded by the thin veil of turquoise that surrounded her. Erella had known Vierra for about as long as she'd known Tezula, and the girl always facinated Erella. She couldn't quite pin point the reason, but she did. Shrugging her shoulders just a bit, Erella rubbed her bare arms, feeling the the small goozebumps that had risen up due to the cold. I'd be warmer if I just shift. She thought to herself. Tilting her head a bit, she seemed to come to a descion. Erella closed her eyes, releasing a heavy breathe. When she exhaled, Erella could already feel the changes that were happening.

Slowly her body began to shrink down, and within seconds a large black and white wolf stood in her place. The wolf shook her head, before she trotted over towards where Isaac and Tezula were seated. Lowering herself to the ground, Erella rested her rather large head down against her paws as she gazed up at the two with her midnight black eyes.

Tezula Vladimer

As the song came to an end, Tezula smiled. She turned to Isaac, saying, "You sing wonderfully, Sir Isaac." Her red-tinged grey eyes fell on Erella, who had taken on her fravorited form of a white and black wolf. "Are you truly that cold, my friend?" She asked, a slight laugh in her voice. She tried her best to keep everyone's spirits up. It was not easy, as the news of the King's impending death was difficult to bear, even more so for the three of them who sat together. "Vierra...we don't bite. You can join us, you know." She couldn't help teasing. Vierra had always been a loner, even now, after knowing each other for almost twelve years.

Isaac Warren

Isaac laughed. "No...my voice can be described perhaps as rough, manly...handsome perhaps. But beautiful? No, I believe that one should be reserved for you alone, my dear." The old soldier smiled warmly at his two former pupils, and then stood, walking over to the side where Vierra had strayed. "I would ask, but I know you too well to know that you'll simply give me a look that conveys the question of why I bothered to ask." Isaac sat down, gazing out over the dreary horizon. "How are you, Vierra?"

It was not a general question. It was aimed directly at one thing. Out of all three, Vierra trusted the least, and bottled everything inside of her, which Isaac knew from experience was not a good combination.

Vierra Shaladon

Just as the song came to an end, a rush of images ran through Vierra's mind, the memories forcing her to shut her clouded eyes and grit her teeth like a headache. This is becoming way too repetitive. If only the wasteland would change... All she could do was watch, as she'd been made to do so many times before, in a startling clarity that had never dulled; the scenes of her hometown's death. And she would've been stuck like that, reliving the constant nightmare made worse with bleak conditions of the kingdom, if Tezula's voice hadn't pulled her back into reality. "Vierra...we don't bite. You can join us, you know." Pulling her eyes open again, she noticed how far from the group she had strayed. Well, that's normal, isn't it?

Involuntarily, one of Vierra's eyebrows shot up. "Uh-huh, and you say that with a wolf beside you. Very convincing." Her usual tone of sarcasm radiated from her reply, as it did most of the time when she spoke to people she knew well. It had taken her long years to realize that she'd actually dropped the pretense of 'strangers' with Tezula and Erella (and even Isaac, however unlikely that had seemed at the beginning), subconsciously. The revelation had shocked Vierra, as she had been so careful to keep the distance, but she'd never admitted that they were friends in the days after. There were reasons why she was so careful with whom she was close to.

It was then that Isaac approached her, commenting before sitting down beside her. "How are you, Vierra?" Was I always that obvious? Actually, scratch that. I know I'm that obvious. A small, sad smile caught on her face for half a second (that she hoped nobody would see) before changing into another, more normal one; but the cheerfulness didn't reach her eyes. "Right now, it's hard to be anything but depressed. But I'm fine, if that's what you're asking. Nothing to be worried about." A genuine smile lit her face as Vierra glanced back at Erella, the cold was getting to her too. "You know, you could've asked." It only took a moment to gather otherwise damp wood, and then another as a spell banished the water. She'd found, years before, that magic was incredibly useful in 'creating' usable wood.

Dropping the dry load in a pile near the wolf, a turquoise spark ignited the wood to create a normal fire; thankfully not fueled by magic. An instant later, a semi-transparent dome appeared well around the camp, a shield from rain as well as any unpleasant creatures that might find them in the night. The barrier totally disappeared from view when Vierra traced a small, foreign symbol in the air, while whispering a short spell. This was a routine she's made, at the beginning of their journey to find the heir. Because it's better to be safe than sorry. Now finished, she let out a pent-up breath and dropped onto the ground beside the fire; letting the heat wash the numbness from her hands away. "And now it's warm."

Fenrir

Fenrir climbed on along the bookshelves of his library. The shelves were made of marble and deeply inset, giving him 'handholds' without damaging the books sitting on the shelves. He was looking for a certain tome having to do with ancient relics. I seem to have misplaced it, he thought to himself. Where would it be? He moved to the shelf directly behind him, continuing his search but finding nothing. His stomach growled a bit. I will find this infernal book later, right now it's time for a snack. He dropped to the ground and land on his feet and wings, which served as forelegs when walking. Making his way through the winding corridors and flying up to a landing ledge, he looked out over the land. It was once a fertile and beautiful forest, but was now a crumbling wasteland. Fenrir hated what was happening to the land, it pained him to see the world dying.

Taking flight, Fenrir climbed to an altitude that would allow him to fly freely without being recognized as a dragon, he would simply appear to be a hawk or an eagle. He was probably going to have to fly out of the area to find anything to eat. The wasteland was home to nothing and hardly ever did animals move through it. He noticed a camp about seven miles from his mountain, the fire glittering against the dark ground. Now, I wonder who that could be. Then he noticed something creeping up on the camp. It was about the size of a human and resembled a large cat, about fifty yards away. Well, you're my snack now, whatever you are, he thought to himself. He swooped it lower as silent as any owl, the creature unaware of his presence. He could grab it up before it even realized what hit it, but decided not to. The creature looked up as Fenrir was upon it, the only thing it could do was howl in pain as the massive jaws of a dragon clamped down on it, killing the creature.

Fenrir flew right over the camp and landed forty yards away in a small cluster of dying trees that were still managing to stand to devour his kill. Grabbing the body of the creature dangling from his jaws with the two 'fingers' on one of his wings, he ripped it in half and swallowed. Then he tossed the other half up and snapped down on it, nabbing it right out of the air. Something caught his attention. A scent on the air that was familiar, coming from the camp he had passed over. He looked back at it seeing the fire again, this time seeing four figures huddled around it. The other three scents were not familiar, he didn't know them. But the fourth was his old friend Isaac. So... They've started looking already, he thought to himself. That old fool that likes to correct his opponents better pay me a visit if he's this close.

Valshe

King Edemir was weak, the blight of the fictional 'Master of Shadows'. Apparently the king supported the idea of that fictional character. He spun around, the coattails rising, catching on a finely wrought broadsword, "My king, I see that you have not brought my suggestion into consideration. Three soldiers to wander the land in a manhunt is extremely foolish, it would have been better to send out a squadron of soldiers, small enought to go undetected, large enough to comb an area in a short time. No more than a hundred, no less than fifty. But then, that aside, what would you like to discuss?" He stood facing the window, allowing the faint light to caress his features.

"Another thing, do you believe that this... Master of Shadows actually exists? The only thing that we could count as evidence is missing patrols." He angled his head slightly, so that he could look at the man out of the corner of his eye.

Vrael

Black-sheathed fingers traced the air, causing green symbols to form in a circular manner. With a swift movement, the final symbol was traced and the circle expanded rapidly, encircling the lifeless form of Teialaformis, the first Immortal, an extension to his will and goals. Now, black mist, not unlike his other form poured onto the metal plates, lifting them from the ground.

Vrael smiled as mangled pieces of metal took their form, a head, two claws and a metallic ribcage. His mask popped off, darkness seeping out from the confined space, with a small puff of breath, Vrael breathed the first air of Unlife into the creature, igniting a red glow from its eyes.

"For every good there must be an evil, for fire there must be water, for earth there must be air, for light there is darkness... i do not doubt that the Master of Shadows exists in some way or form... Renova blances itself naturally and when i was given the power of light someone else was given the power of darkness... i know not where he is, or who he is, but he does exist, if not just in name but in ideal... as for your suggestion true it would be easier to send a squadron small enough to be unnoticable but large enough to cover the lands at a quicker pace but with everything as it is few bonds can be held together... humans are fickle things, as well as some other speices, they follow those who will protect them and their children and will gladly die for them... but when the whole world becomes upset with no true haven then we all become animals and fight for no-one but ourselves."

Edemir looked at his rapier again and slowly picked it up, cradling it in his arms as if a cold child in need of slumber

"I have seen best friends tear each other to pieces even before now, well i have heard anyway, so what do you think would happen now, i sent three because those three were not only my best soilders but they all have something great about them, something to help them perserve in this time... if they break then all is lost for this kingdom... maybe this world... that is my answer to your request..."

Edemir looked up and gave a slight smile to Yalshe. Secound slater though it turned to a look betwwen horror and rage. He saw one again. A demon.
And it was protuding from Yalshe's very skull. Edemir's eyes lit up as he moved to raise his rapier. He shouted
"Demon, why do you enter my home! Begone! Now!" Edemir started to swing the rapier around, though the moves were mostly accurate they still weren't his best and could be easily blocked or sidestepped.

Valshe

"What the-" Valshe retreated back against the window, "Sir? Calm down! It's me!" He ducked under a slash, scabbling towards the door, tearing out into the hall, knocking the nurse to the ground. "Sorry! Sorry!" He pulled her back to her feet just as the enraged yells from the king reached them. "Uhm, I know that this is not my place to tell you so but, help him calm down, he's not really healthy so..." The maid merely nodded and entered the room while Valshe began to tear off towards the stables.

He dropped two coppers for the stablehand who brought his hazelnut horse to him, saddled and ready for riding. "Thank you," With that, he tore off out onto the dirt path. What the bloody hell? Tendrils of darkness surged towards him and the horse, wrapping them in a shroud of daknes for no more than a second before...

Vrael

Vrael tore out from the black mist, fully cloaked in a black ragged cloak. His mask glinted slightly as he passed through a beam of sunlight. Shade, his horse galloped down the path barely raising a cloud of dust. The horse was now pure black, with glowing eyes, its muscles were, the least to say, very powerful, yet it moved with the grace of a crane.

Distance did not matter, when they had finally passed the populated areas, both Vrael and Shade dissolved into black mist, and then, they were back 'home'. A small hut on a densely forested hill, surrounded by treacherous terrain, neigh impossible to reach. However, there was a faint life source, who ever it was, he was either very foolhardy, skillful or both. He patted Shade, who wandered off towards the seemingly dormant form of Teialaformis. Now to investigate this brave soul.

He turned into mist once again, slithering across the ground like enchanted water, before appearing some distance away from the person. A boy, it seemed. He allowed his mask to dissapate, revealing Valshe's face, within the black cloak. He ripped off the hood before drawing a glinting sword and entering the clearing noisily. He stopped, seemingly letting his guard down and sheathing his sword once again. He walked over to the boy, "Boy, what are you doing here? It would have seemed that you have wandered very far from home." He cocked his head to the side, "Are you crying? Why?"

Connor Smasliv

Connor was about to leave to go 'feed his family' when he stumbled across a house he hadn't seen before. Either he hadn't gone this road before, or he hadn't really cared. Either way, he felt himself drawn to the house, until he realized how hard it was to get up there. Maybe this house was of the rich, and maybe he could find some food inside. It was worth a shot. He scaled the rocks, dodged out the trees, and made his way to the top quite easily. Years of climbing had made him very good at shifting his weight so he did not fall to his death multiple times. He approached the house, but as he just got over the final rock, he realized something else: The house looked so peaceful, so beautiful. It was a lonely little house on the hilltop, away from civilization. It reminded him of the stories his mother told him of her old house. Maria would describe it to him, and promise that one day they would build a house for their family and they could finally get off the streets.

Connor was crying. Again. He couldn't help it. He had always been an emotional child, crying when he found a dead bird and having to cook it. Crying when some stranger got killed. It was in his nature to care. What happened next nearly startled him off the hill side: A man, whom he hadn't seen earlier, appeared and spoke to him. "Boy, what are you doing here? It would have seemed that you have wandered very far from home. Con looked up, scared and nervous. The man had just sheathed a sword, making his dagger look like a toy. He gulped as the man asked another question. Are you crying? Why? Connor quickly wiped his face quickly, snuffling.

"I-I was just reminded of a memory, that is all. And yes, I guess I am far from home. Sorry to have bothered you." He spoke quietly.

#, as written by Neru
Erella.

Uh-huh and you say that with a wolf beside you. Very convincing. Erella heard Vierra say. Turning her large head to face her companion, the wolf gave what could have passed for a smile, her sharp canines now in full veiw to the girl. The wolf then let out a snort like laugh before resting her head down agianst her paws once more. Erella listened to the others talk, very much content on not joining in the conversations that were taking place. Instead she allowed her mind to wander to the current task at hand. Would they really be able to locate tha heir? Would they all make it through this togther..And alive? Many thoughts ran around the assassins head, causing a dull ache to form in the back of her skull. A low whimper left the wolf as she placed her paws over her muzzle now. It was then she heard Vierra's voice once more. You know you could've asked. The next thing the shifter realized was the warmth coming for the fire that Vierra had created. Casting her a gratefull glance, Erella pushed herself onto her feet and trotted over to the mage, nuzzling her large head agianst the girls side. Once she was done with then she scooted close to the fire before easily shifitng back into her human form. Though, like every time she shifted out of her wolf form, her two black wolf ears remained as well as her fluffy tail. "Well, I didn't want to burden you Vierra, you looked to be in deep though. Erella told the girl, as she sat near the warm fire now, her gaze drifting about her compaions.

"I see, you should relax, I won't be cutting a boy up for wandering in these woods," Vrael crouched, splaying his hand, causing a small puff of ashes to rise from the ground. "Hunting?" He traced a symbol on the ashes. "This place is not safe, if you are looking for food, I can help you. It's a very simple job, for a sack of copper." He patted a pocket, a sack of copper coins clinking softly.

Vrael unbuckled his sheath from his belt and handed it to the boy, "The job: carry this sword to your home and as soon as you have reached, I will pass you the money." He smiled, "Deal?" After all it was the dream of most male youths to carry or wield a sword. He straightened up, dusting his black cloak with a hand, "Shall we go?" He gestured for the boy to lead the way.

Connor Smasliv

Connor stayed quiet as the man reassured him that the wasn't going to be punished. The joke about being eaten wasn't very funny, as Connor was quite scared by the man. But when the man somehow guessed he was 'hunting' he proposed a job to him. Connor's eyes watched as the man patted his pocket, easily hearing the copper coins clinking against each other, restrained in the sack. Connor knew that those coins could get him the food he needed, and he would be doing an honest job for them too! At least... Connor's brows furrowed a little. This man could be tricking him into doing something illegal. It had happened before, but it didn't matter. His motto was that his family came first, country came a close second.

What was surprising was when the man unbuckled the sheath of his sword, and stuck his hand out for him. The job: carry this sword to your home and as soon as you have reached, I will pass you the money. Connor blinked. "You mean, just like that? Carry your sword to my house, and I get paid?" He blinked again. Either he fell across the perfect opportunity or he was dreaming. He slowly grabbed the sword, and smiled proudly. "I will do so with honor, sir!" He said happily, and began to walk towards his house as the man motioned for him to lead the way. He never came across such an amazing opportunity to help some stranger AND get paid at the same time. He felt like he was redeeming himself somehow, but he knew that would never happen.

Vrael

Out of the corner of his eye, he watched the boy. And then he said, "It appears that I have not yet introduced myself, I'm Valshe, a nobleman in charge of maintaining the stability of nature. And you are...?" He nodded as he recieved his response. Sighing, he said, "I have failed my job rather terribly, I have yet to find the source of the problem. The stream up ahead is the only clean water source in this area, untouched even by the ash. Do you think it would be safe to think that someone has been casting some sort of ward on the river to prevent it from being corrupted?"

Up ahead was a makeshift bridge across the narrow stream, "This is the stream I was talking about." The water was crystal-clear, though life within it was restricted to only small fish and even smaller aquatic plants. "Even your thoughts could help me end the cause of this corruption."

Connor Smasliv

"Connor. But I'm normally just called Con." Connor smiled to the man happily, but underneath he knew he had heard that man's name before. He was the noble in charge of fixing their mess. But what he asked next was odd. "I have failed my job rather terribly, I have yet to find the source of the problem. The stream up ahead is the only clean water source in this area, untouched even by the ash. Do you think it would be safe to think that someone has been casting some sort of ward on the river to prevent it from being corrupted? Connor stopped in his tracks, a puzzled expression on his face. Why would such a high ranking noble man ask him about their survival? But he wanted to answer truthfully, so he did so. When they arrived, and Valshe asked his thoughts, he answered:

"I honestly wouldn't know, I'm not so good at magics sir." Great, start with a little white lie. Good going Connor. "I mean, I know a little, but that would take a massive amount of strength and durability, would it not? It seems more like either this stream has multiple people protecting it, or else this one person is very strong. It is either that, or there is a third variable that we aren't putting into play. Maybe nature's will to survive perhaps?" Connor was getting very pensive, thinking this through with extreme confidence. "Throughout history, plagues, droughts and such have happened. Even though this is of a much larger magnitude, nature always presses on, ignoring our very existence..." He trailed off, then turned back, blushing slightly.

"Sorry sir, I guess I got carried away."
