Introduction
“No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.”
- William Blake
Many years after the adventures of Maximum Ride and her Flock, the School is still in operation, still struggling to produce that one successful recombinant who will fight for them. Destroy the world for them. Maximum Ride has finally escaped them. Her Flock; her original Flock; have reunited somewhere a great distance from the School, and now they hide together. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel. No one has seen nor heard from them in many years. They have slipped away into legend.
They have become the legends told by Pyrite to his growing Flock. At night, when the white-coats have locked them away in their cages, he whispers to them tales of the ones that got away. The ones who, like them, had survived their mutations. Who had sprouted the graceful, beautiful wings so much like their own. The first Flock. He whispers to his Flock the stories of Max’s adventures, with her dearest friends at her side.
He promises them that someday, somehow, they too will have adventures such as those. They, too, will be free to fly the world.
And now they have their chance.
A new security guard assigned to the night shift, who does not know the tricks and quirks of Pyrite’s Flock. He is the weak link in the chain that holds them, the rusted bar in their cages. If they can take him down, they are free.
One thing that has not occurred to them; what will they do once they finally escape?

He shifted nervously on his branch, wings rustling behind him as he readjusted. It had been four days now since they had escaped from the School, and already Pyre was starting to feel like a failure as their leader. Freedom... was wonderful. It was great not to have men in white coats with medical masks leaning over him, poking him with sticks and needles, attaching probes to his head and his chest, running him through giant machines to see if they could find out how he worked. It was wonderful not to be forced to run or jump or fly or dodge around moving obstacles in a wind tunnel to see how agile, how strong, how fast he had become. But freedom was also overrated. When he had learned the legends of Maximum Ride, the bird-kid, now dead, who had told them to him had forgotten to mention amongst the glory and fighting that he had to find a way to feed his Flock, to clothe them and clean them and shelter them. The task seemed impossible...
And yet he had no choice. He had made the plan that brought them out of there, with the help of Mercy, of course. He had led them out on that first day. Now, they were his responsibility. Food, water, shelter. Those were the most important things right now. He simply had to focus on those three things and maybe, just maybe, they would survive the next week.

The blonde did a quick loop in the air, then paused to think. One loop was fun, so what about two? Or three? Or seven? Or what if she pretended to be different animals? She didn't know much about the world outside of the School, but at least all the kids who had lived (more or less) in there were mixed with the DNA of some animal. She had once known a kid mixed with a cat, but he hadn't come back from testing one day...
Shaking the thought from her mind, she quickly performed three loops in a row. Nevada did not feel the least bit dizzy as she started to spiral downward at top speed, squealing the whole time. Freedom! What a beautiful word! It was brilliant like the sun. It was different and new, and she loved it. Extending her snowy white wings a bit, she slowed down and landed on the sandy ground. She looked around for the others, figuring they were all off doing their own thing. She shrugged, sitting down and putting both of her legs behind her head.

But looking down on it - Oh, what greater glory was there on this earth?
Mercy soared. In the canyon, naturally. They had agreed to stay out of the skyline, to huddle in the trench like the soldiers they were. But as her wings beat rhythmically, she relished the free-flying space. Her wings folded in, and she dived silently, her arms outstretched against the buffeting air. She dove down, down, aiming at the white blotch against the dirty walls. Landing silently, her wings pulled in and she crouched, absorbing the small impact with her knees. The shirt that prison had provided her fluttered around her thighs. The arms had already been ripped off in a skirmish, the cuts on her shoulders were scabbing up. It was dirty, dirtier than it had ever been, and she was anticipating in earnest new clothes.
"Pyrite." She walked up to him, her bare feet protesting against this new texture of ground. Her sunburnt hand was placed against his shoulder. "Breathe. They're alright." She looked down at their friends -- their family, as they soared in the hidden space. Mercy walked forward, tugging at her matted hair, to lean on the blackened branch on which Pyrite was sitting. She smiled up at him, conscious of the sun on her face and the wind on her cheeks.
((Author's note. For the time being, Mercy actually has shoulder-length hair. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oLw9AMDE_kg/T ... watson.jpg
As a background, they would cut it every so often in the school, but they always kept it between ear length and mid-back)

"I'm hungry," Jinx murmured, resting her head on her brother's shoulder. "I want to go home." Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes. Her brother quickly wiped them away.
"We have no home right now, Sis," he replied softly and wrapped his arms around her to comfort her.
She allowed herself to be pulled into his embrace. She sniffed quietly before more tears trickled down her cheeks. "Why us, Jack?" she asked in a shaky voice. "Why us? What did we do to deserve this?"
"Nothing. They're just mean people."
"I want to go home, Jack."
"We have no home, Jinx."

"Breathe," she told him in a quiet voice. "They're alright."
Pyrite did as he was told, drawing a slow breath and turning back to watch his family in the canyon. No matter what Mercy said, there was nothing that could get him to stop worrying. He had gotten his family stuck out here, not allowed to fly above the rim of the canyon, unable to find food or any shelter better than the shallow caves that had been carved out of the sides of the canyon. It seemed pretty pathetic. He had led them to escape the greatest prison in the world...
And he couldn't even find them a decent meal.
"They're starving, Merc..." he whispered, beating his wing restlessly against the air. He wanted to take off, fly up and out of the canyon, find them food. But he could not risk it. His white wings, if he left the canyon, would surely serve as a beacon and lead the enemy straight to his flock. He would have to wait for a couple of days before doing anything so rash.
Pyre fell silent again, and could not help overhearing the hushed conversation of the twins, only a few feet away.
Pyrite swallowed hard, forcing down his fear and guilt as he turned to the little ones.
"We do have a home," he told them firmly, standing up on his branch and walking along it until he reached the cliff. He approached them slowly, not wanting to startle them. They were allies, family... but these two were young, and they had been traumatized by their lives before the escape. "It's wherever all of us are. Together.

After a few minutes of flying, she turned to see if she could still see the flock. Squinting her eyes, they were just little dots. Perfect... Straining her neck to look up, she let her gaze wander the canyon wall. Frowning to herself, she dropped down lower. There! Excited now, she flew towards the curve in the wall. As soon as she had turned her eyes widened in shock. The plain stone wall seemed to go on forever, making her slightly dizzy. Diving towards the ground she pulled her wings in, landing on the ground silently but slightly scraping her knee. Shaking off, she started down the path, straining her eyes and ears for any hint of finding something useful.
Damn it... Breathing hard, Blaise fell to her knees. She had been walking for some time now, not finding anything she could use. Please, a branch? Something?! Maybe there isn't anything... She shook the thought away and got back to her feet, willing herself to go on. A shadow passed over head, causing Blaise to instantly flatten herself against the ground. Realizing it was just a bird, she laughed, looking up. Once we sort everything out, Pyrite will let us go all the way up there. Smiling now, she sent a silent thank you to the bird, and just when she was about to start walking again, the bird seemed to disappear into the canyon wall. Flying up to where she had last seen the bird, she gasped. A large crack ran down the wall, just big enough for a few skinny kids to fit in. Carefully she squeezed in and blinked a few times, trying to adjust her eyes to the darkness. She had stepped into a large opening, with a smooth floor and sharp rocks coming out of the wall. Squealing in excitement she flew back outside, bursting into the sunlight.
"Pyrite! Nevada! Mer-" The bright grin faded from her face. What have I done? Blaise stood facing the canyon wall, with a road on both sides of her, both looking endless.

"I think we should-" Nevada cut herself off quickly, seeing an interesting rock in a nearby cavern. "Rock!" she screamed, jumping up and lazily opening her wings. She quickly flew up to the crack, about as tall as she was, and stepped inside. Bending down, she picked up and examined it. It was rough and sandy, as most things seemed to be in this new life. It was in the shape of a crude heart. It was pretty.
"I found a rock! I found a rock!" the teenager yelled down to the others, then flew back and landed gracefully. She stretched her wings open in the warm desert sun, then folded them tight against her back as she had learned to do while trapped in her cage. She held the rock up for all of them to see. It's rusty color was as unimpressive as anything else, but she hoped it would lighten the mood.
This is what the group needed. Pyrite, her 'older brother', needed a break. Jack and Jinx, who honestly scared her a bit, needed some form of hope. Maybe this simple piece of nature would do it. She looked around, expecting to see Blaise. But she wasn't there. "Uh oh..." Nevada half sang, looking around for any sign of the red haired girl.

"What do you mean, 'uh'..." he trailed off, scanning the flock. "Oh..."
He straightened up, staring wildly around. Where could Blaise possibly have gone?! He whirled to Mercy.
"Did you see her leave?" he demanded, then turned to the rest of the flock. "Did any of you see where she went?!"
His wings beat nervously behind him. If he could only take flight, it would all be so much easier. He could spot her in an instant. But his bright white wings would be like a beacon for the enemy....

So close, so close. They had almost made it past the danger zone; the area that would determine if they lived safely through or not. Mercy took a few steps, then jumped down, extending her auditory senses. She ripped her wings into the air, cutting through the wind, and wrenching the bones into her shoulders. She yelped from the pain, before gaining control of her wingflaps. Ascending into the air, she levelled with her family.
"Coming?"
And then she was diving... listening...

"Blaise!" she called out carelessly, starting to speed through the canyon. The high rocky cliffs scared her, but the thought of losing a friend was just as terrifying. Nevada pushed the thoughts of falling and the cliffs collapsing out of her mind as she flew, hoping they would find Blaise soon.
Looking down, she spotted another interesting looking rock. "Rock!!!!" she cried out again, instantly forgetting about what she was doing. She began to dive down and pick it up, when she remembered that she needed to find Blaise first. Friends first, rocks second.

Turning around she laid down once again, this time throwing her arms over the edge and letting them be pushed which ever way the wind felt like blowing. She closed her eyes and smiled to herself, humming a tune the white coats had used in a experiment. They seemed disappointed when she couldn't perfectly copy sounds...
Suddenly something felt weird. Annoyed, Blaise turned over, trying to shove the feeling away. She couldn't stop twitching though, and finally getting pissed off she stood up and started pacing. Leaning out of the crack slightly, she realized what it was. She could hear voices.
A wide grin spread across her face. The flock! They did notice I was gone! Pyrite will be so mad, but at least I'll be back with the flock! Right as she was about to jump off the edge to go meet them, she froze. What if its not the flock? What if its the Erasers? How will I warn the flock?! She sunk back into the cave, pressing up against the farthest corner. I'll wait. If its the flock, I'll know the voices, if its Erasers, I'll hide.
After a few minutes of holding her breath, Blaise was sure it wasn't Erasers, because they wouldn't make this much noise, and it wasn't the flock, the voices were different. What she was also sure of was the fact that they were walking right towards the cave. I hope they can't fly, who ever it is. The voices were right below the crack at this point, and they seemed to stop. Very slowly and quietly Blaise crawled forward to hear what they were saying.
"... Little wind can't hurt! Look at the sun! And the birds! This is what we need, a family trip into paradise. Jean, you can get some pictures of birds when we go walking. Ben, set the bags down over here. We'll set everything up after we've walked more. Make sure to bring at least one of the water bottles... Ben, please hold your little sisters hand for heaven sake. We can't have her wandering off."
Oh thank goodness. What the heck is a family doing out here though? There are better places to go sight seeing... I wonder if its a trap... She inched closer to the crack, wanting to take a peak out but knowing it would ruin her hiding spot. Instead she sat down and listened more.
"... Not feeling well, pleeeeease?! I'll keep Kate with me, she must be tired too. You and mom can go take pictures of birds."
This time who ever spoke had a higher voice. So far there's Jean... I think that's the mother... Ben must have spoken just now, the older child, a younger sister, Kate, and the Dad, who must have been the first to speak. That's not too bad, I shouldn't be noticed at all.
Blaise sat back, smiling. This could be soooo much worse. I'm very lucky... We'll see if this family can be useful to me. Maybe I'll learn a little more about the world from them. It was then she realized that the flock wouldn't find her if she was hiding in a cave, and that now she was stuck there, hiding.

She wasn't quite sure. Either way, she needed to be flying right side up if she had any hope of spotting her friend. she flipped herself over, letting out a cry of happiness. Scanning the canyon walls, she noticed a few moving blobs in the distance. Erasers? Had they been found already? "Ahhhhh!!!" Nevada screamed, covering her eyes and continuing to fly. She was terrified of Erasers.

People. They were people. A young boy and girl... Not Erasers. She let loose a breath that she had not known she had been holding, feeling her abdomen relax from the immediate stress.
Standing, she walked towards a trail that would place her in the immediate vicinity of those who were hiking.

"What do we do if they see our uh..." She trailed off, since she had no idea how to spell the word 'wings'. It was funny, because she'd had them for as long as she could remember, but she had no idea how to spell the word. "Our wi-ng-s." Nevada shrugged, deciding it would be better to just stretch out the word as supposed to trying to spell something out.

Also, I'd like to point out that the Flock + all future avian mutants have had way above-average hearing+sight.

Maybe mine can center around people? Since she's so connected to them, it should be easy for her to shift their appearances (like make them seem invisible or change facial features) whereas you can control the outside world, like the landscape?
