⌈HistoryβŒ‹
Twelve princesses, each more beautiful than the last, sleep in twelve beds in the same room. Every night, their doors are securely locked. But in the morning, their dancing shoes are found to be worn through as if they had been dancing all night. The king, perplexed, promises his kingdom and each daughter to any man who can discover the princesses' midnight secret within three days and three nights, but those who fail within the set time limit will be put to death.

An old soldier returned from war comes to the king's call after several princes have failed in the attempt. Whilst traveling through a wood he comes upon an old woman, who gives him an enchanted cloak that he can use to observe them unawares and tells him not to eat or drink anything given to him in the evening by any of the princesses and to pretend to be fast asleep until after they leave.

The soldier is well received at the palace just as the others had been and indeed, in the evening, the eldest princess comes to his chamber and offers him a cup of wine. The soldier, remembering the old woman's advice, throws it away secretly and begins to snore loudly as if asleep.

The twelve princesses, sure that the soldier is asleep, dress themselves in fine dancing gowns and escape from their room by a trap door in the floor. The soldier, seeing this, dons his magic cloak and follows them. He steps on the gown of the youngest princess, whose cry of alarm to her sisters is rebuffed by the eldest. The passageway leads them to three groves of trees; the first having leaves of silver, the second of gold, and the third of glittering diamonds. The soldier, wishing for a token, breaks off a twig of each as evidence. They walk on until they come upon a great clear lake. Twelve boats, with twelve princes, appear where the twelve princesses are waiting. Each princess gets into one, and the soldier steps into the same boat as the twelfth and youngest princess. The youngest princess complains that the prince is not rowing fast enough, not knowing the soldier is in the boat. On the other side of the lake stands a castle, into which all the princesses go and dance the night away.

The twelve princesses happily dance all night until their shoes are worn through and they are obliged to leave. The strange adventure continues on the second and third nights, and everything happens just as before, except that on the third night the soldier carries away a golden cup as a token of where he has been. When it comes time for him to declare the princesses' secret, he goes before the king with the three branches and the golden cup, and tells the king all he has seen. The princesses know that there is no use in denying the truth, and confess.

✯ Dream | Priscilla Ahn ✯
I was a little girl
Alone in my little world
Who dreamed of a little home for me.
I played pretend between the trees,
And fed my houseguests bark and leaves,
And laughed in my pretty bed of green.

I had a dream
That I could fly
From the highest swing.
I had a dream.

Long walks in the dark
Through woods grown behind the park,
I asked God who I'm supposed to be.
The stars smiled down on me,
God answered in silent reverie.
I said a prayer and fell asleep.

I had a dream
That I could fly
From the highest tree.
I had a dream.

Now I'm old and feeling grey.
I don't know what's left to say
About this life I'm willing to leave.
I lived it full and I lived it well,
There's many tales I've lived to tell.
I'm ready now,
I'm ready now,
I'm ready now
To fly from the highest wing.

I had a dream.

So begins...

Serenity slid her black cloak over her blue jeans and purple tank top before brushing through her blonde strands. She looked herself over in the mirror with a sigh and figured that it would be time to take a break from everything kingdom related, so she made her way through the castle's halls and down the spiral staircase then out the castle doors. She smiled softly and took a deep breath of fresh air. The female made her way through the pathway leading down to the castle gates and walked through them, being sure to close them behind her after being sure that nobody saw her come out from the castle.

It had been a good few weeks since she was last in the village and it felt nice to be able to hear all of the normal village chatter going on. She could smell the sweet aroma of freshly baked bread and decided to head out towards the bakery. With a soft smile on her face, she placed a dollar onto the table then grabbed a piece of the bread before taking a bite from it.

Kathleen focused on her steps during the dance. She pirouetted and did everything she was supposed to. The dance was in the middle of the square which Drew a lot of attention from everyone around. After about two minutes, her sisters jumped off the stage and then let Kathleen begin dancing. She danced with grace and poise as they men and women of the town gazed upon her fair dancing figure. She was clad in a pair of pink ballet shoes and a white ballet leotard, identical to her sisters. She drew the attention of many and even saw the glitter of golden hair.

Serenity smiled as she watched the young red head dance as gracefully as ever upon the stage in the middle of the square. She loved watching the villager's events even though she knew both of her parents were giving a disappointing glare down at her from the Heavens above, she didn't care. She was now ruler of the kingdom, which gave her free rein over whatever she wanted to do. But of course she didn't need everyone in the village knowing who she was.

After securing a job at the bakery, Ara drifted over to watch a few talented dancers in the middle of the square, lead by a red haired girl who obviously knew what she was doing. On her way to get a closer look at the girls, Ara stumbled into a girl wearing a black cloak. It was obviously the blonde girl from the bakery, Ara thought, before smiling and saying, "Hello, miss. I'm Ara. And you?"

The female quickly turned around finding a beautiful brunette standing in front of her. "It's alright," she stated in her soft voice with a smile. "I'm Ren," she responded giving her nickname instead of her full name. After all there weren't many people around with the name Serenity, if she gave that out she would probably know on the dot who she was. "Lovely show huh?" she added.

Kathleen focused on the steps then curtsied to the crowd. She smiled then saw the golden hair again. She grabbed the girl's hand, bringing her onto the stage and curtseying to her so they could dance. The girl's golden curls were beautiful and she smiled as her red hair stayed in her ballerina bun that sat on top of her head, much like her sister's.

"Amazing show, Ren. How are you?" Ara asked, a genuine smile on her face at the kind girl standing in front of her. As she stood in front of Ren, the red haired dancer brought her onto the stage, effectively disrupting their conversation. Half angry and half shocked by the dancer's bold move, Ara continued to watch the dance, growing more impressed with each passing second.

Serenity was shocked at what had just happened as she was ripped away from the female she was beginning to talk with, but with a small smile on her face, she began doing ballet to the best of her abilities in the shoes she was wearing. Of course it wasn't too difficult for Serenity to do because she does all sorts of different dances, but she just needed to be sure to be careful not to injure her feet in the process. It was pretty fun being able to finally dance with someone without everyone knowing who she was.

As Ara watched Ren enjoy dancing, she felt her feet bob and bounce to the beat of the dance. Smiling, she swayed with the dancers, always on the same beat as them. Dancing had always been quite hard for Ara, as she was born without feet, so she was still very clumsy. Ren and those dancers are very talented, Ara thought enviously as she watched in wonder as the talented girls jumped and twirled and moved gracefully.

Kathleen kept her dance going, being lifted by one of her sister's husbands. She was in the splits and Serenity was being lifted by the twelve other sisters. She lifted herself from the spilt position, readying herself to jump. She leapt off the man's hands, soaring over Serenity's head but landing with a sickening crack and a dead thud.

Ara watched in silent horror as the red haired dancer fell while attempting to jump, only screaming when she hit the ground with a crack and a thud. She wove in and out of the crowd, attempting to help the girl and save her from a trampling. Worry filled her face as she saw the blood left on the ground. But what had she broken? Ara thought helplessly, unable to locate the girl's fracture, or even worse, break.

Serenity's bright blues widened in horror after seeing that the dancer had taken a horrible fall. She quickly ran towards her, her blonde curls bouncing with every step. "Somebody call the paramedics!" the blonde female yelled out in horror. She knew a little about medical help but didn't know about everything. She tried to help the best she could. The blonde sat down upon the ground and lifted the red head's torso into her lap without moving her from the spot she was laying in. "Could someone grab her a glass of water?" she asked trying to keep as calm as possible, after all, someone had to stay calm through all of this.

Grabbing a glass of water from a random stranger, she frantically made her way over to Ren and the girl. She knelt down, handed her the water, and said,"Do you know her name? I could try to find her family," to Ren, before lifting the injured dancer up out of Ren's lap, and held her on her feet.

Serenity nodded her head, "If I remember correctly this dancer's name is Kathleen, everyone who was dancing with her were her sisters. But we really shouldn't move her and just wait for the paramedics to arrive." The blonde held the cup of water to the red head's lips and allowed her to drink a little bit.

"Thank you for telling me, but we can't keep her in the square. The ground is rock hard, and it's too busy for the paramedic to do anything. We could take her to my cabin, I've got supplies there. Believe it or not, I've had to do this a few times before," Ara said to Ren, desperate to help this girl, and get back to her lake. The water in her jar wouldn't last much longer, and judging by this girl's wounds, she would most likely be better in her cabin, away from the stifling square.

Serenity looked down at the girl and let out a sigh. "Alright, I guess we could move her." The blonde lifted her up bridal style into her arms and glanced back over at Ara. "Okay, lead the way please do it quickly, we need to lay her back down!" she stated in a quick pace.

(Hi, sorry. My computer died, and I had school.)

"Great," Ara said, relieved, as she led the way to her cabin. As she opened the door to let Ren and Kathleen in, she said, "Drop her on the bed if you can, please," before muttering an excuse about needing herbs and ran out to her lake and refilled her jar, which was only a few drops from being dry. As she came back in, she started to work on the girl. She cleaned the wound, and bandaged it, and then let her sleep, before telling Ren to make herself at home. She headed back to the lake for a few moments alone.

The blonde female quickly but gently laid the red head onto the bed she was told to then glanced around the small cabin. It was a nice place. It had been a very long time since she was last in a villager's home, she almost forgot about how small and homey they could be, that is compared to her castle.
When Ara went outside to grab some herbs, at least that's what the female had told Serenity. But of course she wasn't going to tell Ara that she knew who she was because then she'd have to explain why she did and things wouldn't turn out good in the end. Serenity had to be careful with the things she said to people if she didn't want anyone to know she was the princess ruling the lands. The blonde sat down on one of the chairs beside the bed the red head was laying on so she'd be able to keep a careful eye upon her just in case something were to happen.

After Ara has hurriedly grabbed some arrowheads from the ground so that she could back up her claim about herbs, she went back inside to check up on the girl and put some things away. After doing what she was supposed to, she went back by Ren and sat down on a small, rickety chair from her parents. "So, what should we do when Kathleen, I think you said that was what her name was, wakes up? Do you know how to contact her family?" Ara asked Ren, stretching out on the chair, trying to hide her worry for the girl with a casual posture.

Serenity nodded her head with a soft smile when she turned towards Ara. "Yes, I can get in touch with the family. I have to get home right now, I'll be back some time later tonight to check on everything and in the meantime I'll get in touch with the girl's family." The blonde stood up and began making her way out the cabin door. "Oh, if you need anything give a letter to the castle guards and say it's for me, I work in the castle," she stated quickly. Of course she wasn't lying to the girl, she did work in the castle, she just never told her exactly what it was she did.

Ara smiled at the girl as she left, and went over to tend to Kathleen. She sat down in a chair next to the bed, and soon let herself drift to sleep, completely forgetting about the fragile jar she had with her.
