“I remember in junior high, Mrs. Walen spoke of geothermal activity spanning billions of years."I bet you that there are fiery sulphuric streams and icy glacier waters running underneath the hospital,” said Morrigan, “and what about Laurel, maybe we can convince her to help us?”

They spoke for a while, discussing how Morrigan's water powers could affect the hospital's infrastructure & water supply.
The two girls planned and plotted, picked at their lunch in a haze, then skipped visitation hour and recreational therapy to continue deliberations.
They concluded that the garden just past their ward’s yard was the best way out, because the concrete-free earth could allow Morrigan to access groundwaters.

When a nurse walked in the sun was setting and the two girls were in the depth of the conversation, holding eachother's hands.

“No touching!” she said.

“it’s time for supper anyways, follow me to the dining hall” said the nurse.

They walked a distance behind the nurse as she alerted patients that it was suppertime.
One boy, that Klara knew as Toaster, was walking alongside them.

Toaster grabbed a tray sat down at a table near the girls. He unveiled his dinner: tortellini in tomato sauce, a whole wheat dinner roll, some margarine, a mug of warm water for tea, an orange juice and milk, and to top it off, a Kozy Shack tapioca pudding for dessert. As he gulped it down, he couldn't help but feel a tinge of pity for the girls who refused to eat any of it.

They seemed to be in the midst of a conversation that was out of this world.

"How can we get off the ward to the garden?"

He couldn't help himself, and spoke up: "excuse me? but the easiest way to get a pass to the garden is to take up smoking. You might have to use a nicotine inhaler for a bit while they get you settled, but I guarantee you'll have a supervised visit to the garden in under a week. They're really nice to smokers here."

Morrigan was slipping into a malnourished, sleep-deprived trance. There was no apple with this meal or the one before. The food before her was morphing and mutating into visions of fire.

Her ears perked up when she heard a boy say “nicotine inhaler.” She didn’t want to smoke, but vapour was her friend. It’s liquid potential made it subject to her magic.

In the back of Morrigan’s soundscape, Klara was telling the boy to come sit with them, then she was reprimanding him for discussing their situation so openly.

Morrigan took a deep breath in, and was suddenly struck by a harsh smell resembling her great grandfather’s whiskey. She exhaled sparks and flames.

Klara noticed her friend's distress. "Are you alright, Morrigan? You just went white as a ghost. Are you there? Morrigan?"

“I’M NOT OKAY! I Just breathed out flames like a dragon, didn’t you see that!?!” Morrigan’s voice was escalating and undulating.

Toaster and Klara looked at each other for a moment.

“We didn’t see anything, Morrigan, everything is okay... Just breathe.” said Klara soothingly.

“I don’t want to breathe! I’ll light this hospital on fire, just like my home! There’s smoke coming out of my eyes, don’t you see that?? All I can hear is an endless train horn!!!” screamed Morrigan.

Morrigan could suddenly see the fire elemental smiling and laughing, directly in front of her. She could feel her skin burning then her muscles, then her bones. Her skeleton threw food, trays and chairs at the fire elemental.

A team of nurses and technicians came to sedate and restrain Morrigan as Klara watched in despair.

“She will be okay, I would know.” said Toaster, “Now, come with me, we can ask nurse Laurel about those nicotine inhalers.”

The nicotine inhalers were white plastic tubes about the length of an index finger. Into these went cartridges about the size of a thumbnail. The cartridge was punctured on both sides, opening a nicotine-infused patch to the air, and then one breathed saturated air through the tube.

Nurse Laurel asked Klara and Toaster why they wanted it, and Klara responded by saying that it would be something to do with her hands. There was no rule against giving patients nicotine inhalers at request, so there was not much Nurse Laurel could do to protest.

Meanwhile, Morrigan's screams could be heard from solitary confinement. "You are killing me!" she wailed. It took all of Klara's logical mind to ignore it. She wanted to cry for her friend.

"Nurse Laurel," said Klara, "would I be allowed to explore the hospital grounds if I was supervised?"

"Why, of course!" said Nurse Laurel, "I'd love to show you the greenhouse, my favorite poetry books in the library... and the outdoor gardens! This place sure is cheerful on a warm summer day."

Toaster looked down at his feet, reeling from Laurel's naiveté.
The awkward moment pressed on as Morrigan's screams faded away.
He suspected that she had been sedated.

In total, Morrigan spent three days in the room. She screamed until she was hoarse. She paced until she got tired. She slept until she couldn't sleep any more. There was nothing to do but let her imagination run wild. Words filtered into the room, and she drew bizarre conclusions about how the world outside worked. She believed herself dead, and it didn't help that ghosts pestered her. This apparently was the afterlife that she accessed as a medium. No wonder ghosts seemed so bored!

On the third day, a ghost told her that she was about to be released, that she was still, indeed, very much alive. Her memories returned in stages, and she recalled the escape plan. Morrigan was anxious that soon she would see Klara again, and hopefully would be able to find a way to the gardens.

---Beginning of Issue 5---

Morrigan was floating on her back, soothed by the slow rock of salty waves. She was in a tropical bliss surrounded by sublime palms, reptiles, and insects. She was also intensely afraid of the leviathans in the depths of this cretaceous ocean, paired with no clue why she was out in the water in the first place. She could suddenly feel a wall of scales supporting her back and pushing her up out of the water. She was then flung high into in the humid air, making her peace with the world as she descended into the jaws of a plesiosaur.

As she descended the teeth became transparent and glistening, and the crush of her atoms thrust her through time and space. She ended up in the Northern hotel in the early 20th century, looking through the window at huge, glimmering icicles. All the heat had left her body, and was returning slowly, trickling through at the speed of mollasses on this frigid day.

She was crowded by chilled townsfolk clutching hot tea and blankets. She heard a man say “the water is so good here, it’s worth every frostbite on my fingers... I’ll never leave this town.” another man chimed in, “and the liquor never freezes!”

When the roar of drunken laughter subsided she could hear classy ladies listing the items that have frozen in the town. Locomotives, bottles of ink, and water pipes which were bursting from the expansion. She was suddenly thrust out of her subconscious and she sat straight up in bed. Expanding water through freezing! that’s how Klara and I will escape! she thought to herself. A nurse barged in expecting to go through the rituals of waking a hostile patient. Instead, she found Morrigan sitting on the edge of her bed, smiling brightly.

Meanwhile, Klara had spent the last few days making notes of the layout of the hospital. With a nicotine inhaler clenched between her teeth, she inspected the gardens, casually asking Nurse Laurel the names of the plants. Nurse Laurel was excited to be able to share the knowledge she had gained in her years practising witchcraft. She was an endless fount of knowledge of even the most esoteric plant-life and minerals.

In the greenhouse, she patiently confided in Klara the many uses of each and every herb.

In the library, she dug up an old dog-eared copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, drawing attention to her favourite quotes. One that spoke to Klara was: "Resist much, obey little." There seemed to be nothing that Nurse Laurel did not love with an intense passion. It was infectious.

By the third day, when Morrigan was released, Klara was permitted to leave the ward unsupervised on half-hour check-backs. Nurse Laurel was confident that Klara would not try to escape again.

Klara was waiting impatiently outside solitary confinement, her leg shaking a million miles an hour. She was now unfortunately familiar with the jittery anxiety of a nicotine addict. Then Morrigan emerged, and everything became perfectly still as they embraced.

“I missed you so much!! Would you like to freshen up back at the ward before we visit the garden?” asked Klara.

“I want to go straight to the garden.” said Morrigan.

Klara swiftly led Morrigan through the ancient corridors. They arrived at the garden and Klara whipped out her nicotine inhaler.

“Are you using that for real now?” asked Morrigan.

“Ya, you want one?” asked Klara.

"Sure.”

“Okay, I’ll be right back.” Klara briskly fled to the nurse's station to ask Laurel for another nicotine inhaler.

“I only have cigarettes, darling, I’m sorry.” said Laurel.

Klara dutifully brought a cigarette back to Morrigan, who grasped it in her palm.

“I don’t want this. I’m still afraid of fire.” said Morrigan.

When Klara reached to take the cigarette back a tiny voice said “afraid of fire.”

“What was that?? asked Morrigan.

“was that??” said the tiny voice.

“Klara, I think it’s coming from the tobacco!” said Morrigan.

“the tobacco!” said the tiny voice.

"Nurse Laurel talked about spirits of plants. Asking them permission to use them, and thanking them for their help. I think this is what she was talking about."

"talking about."

Klara continued, "what do you think we should ask the tobacco for? What's your intention? What's so special about this garden?"

“this garden?” asked the tobacco.

“The tobacco plant is a natural teacher, and could probably communicate with the other plants that surround us. I want to learn where the groundwaters under the hospital flow... and how they can be accessed from where we stand.” said Morrigan.

“where we st--”

“Be patient little spirit, I can hear you.” Morrigan told the tobacco curtly. She let herself get swept up into her thoughts for a moment.

“May I please ask you some questions?” Morrigan asked the tobacco, breaking the silence.

The tobacco responded with silence. The mischevious plant loved to test human nature.

“Alternatively, we can burn the tobacco, and let it’ purifying smoke reveal secrets...” said Morrigan as she pretended to light a match. The tobacco knew she was bluffing and said nothing.

Morrigan ashed the imaginary match and passed the tobacco to Klara, hoping her gentle soul would make the plant feel open and safe.

Klara said: "Maybe you don't know enough about this ground to speak about it? Here's an old Engelmann spruce, could you please speak to her about the groundwaters? Her roots run deep."

Klara placed the cigarette on the ground beside the spruce. There was a significant pause.

Eventually, the tobacco said: "...run deep", and Klara knew the plants had communed.

"Can you please tell Morrigan what you now know?" Klara picked up the cigarette and handed it to Morrigan.

The spruce intuitively knew what Morrigan wanted. The spruce had heard a prophecy in the winds of the wilderness... foretelling a girl from the town being blessed with water powers. The excitement and satisfaction of aiding their escape could make the spruce's existence worthwhile.

The cigarette had entered a deep stream of consciousness, encoding the spruce’s knowledge audibly.

“water system... as a conduit... for the cause... trapped... all my life...this hospital...electric lights...Europeans arrived... layers of earth... glacier... sulphuric...touching them... they will guide...use steam... obstruct visual...flood... will go there... free to escape..."

The cigarette paused for a moment then said, "... the front door.”

The girls returned to ward to plan their next move.

Toaster said, "I told you the cigarette would get you off the ward. For some reason, they love smokers." Here Morrigan showed him the unused cigarette. "Sneaky. I hope you didn't get caught not smoking."

Klara said, "I think we know how to get out of this jail. It's just going to take some planning. But it seems like, if we think through this properly, we can leave out the front door."

"Do you need any help?" asked Toaster. "I want to get out of here just as much as you guys."

"Toaster, I think we need you in a different way," said Morrigan. "The Engelmann spruce told us that we need to use flooding and steam. If that's the case, we will also need a messenger. Someone to get the staff riled up about the flood and cause panic when no one can see. Klara and I can't be anywhere near the action. Besides, I don't think I can take care of three people in the wilderness indefinitely."

Toaster looked down at his feet. "Well, I think I would be an asset to you guys in the forest, I've played "The Long Dark" about a thousand times. And it's not even winter!"

Klara put her hand on his lap and smiled. "It's okay, Toaster, we know you have the strength to stay here."

"I wish Klara could stay to treat her eating disorder, but I need her as a partner. I can't do that to you as well, especially because I'm sure there's only a few weeks left in your treatment. You will be okay if you stay." said Morrigan.

"Okay, and if I stay, I will come for you guys when I am freed. I will bring you supplies. I will be the heroic strength behind our hostile breakout!" He said the last line with mocked confidence, making Klara giggle.

Klara and Morrigan signed back out. Morrigan needed to find the waters under the hospital. She wasn't exactly sure where the pipes were, or how to control her water powers as much as she ought to.

Luckily, there was a staircase to the basement. Corridors of fireproof brick lay in a labyrinth of interconnected passageways, colour-coded with painted lines that showed where each passage lead. Above their heads were water pipes. It was a question of which pipes to rupture to have the most affect.

“I’m going to try to tune into my water powers through meditation. It might help us understand the pipes.” said Morrigan.

She sat down cross-legged on the floor and Klara joined her in silence.

Morrigan closed her eyes and visualized her water powers in a deep corner of her brain; a transparent blue energy locked behind a wall of confusion.

Morrigan began to breath deeply while gazing into her third eye. She focused on the energy centre. When she got closer the wall of confusion surrounding it became more opaque. She shifted her focus to the wall where she saw a single drop trickle down from the top.

Having met a dead end, she opened her eyes.

The the girls tried touching the pipes to feel the temperature differences, but the metal was too thick.

The thickness of the metal and the wall in her mind frustrated Morrigan to the point that a single tear fell from her eye.

As soon as the tear fell Morrigan could see the pipes glowing, revealing their temperatures on a hot and cold spectrum. She could also make out the names of hospital areas engraved as a pattern on the metal surface. Every pipe accessible to the old englemann spruce grew sprouts from it’s seams.

Klara could tell that Morrigan had made a discovery. "How much chaos can you cause?" she asked. "I think the more pipes you burst, the better."

"We'll need to act fast. While there is confusion, we can make it to the front door and break it open. But first, I need to ditch this feeding tube. It's rough carrying this around everywhere. I can't do it myself. Do you mind? I think you'll just need to tug it out. It shouldn't be that hard."
