Introduction
Ymir bled so much that his blood flooded the world, and drowned most of the frost giants. They made rocks and pebbles from his teeth and jaws and those bones that were broken. Maggots appeared in Ymir's flesh, and by decree of the gods, they took a human appearance but remained small. From these small beings, the dwarves emerged, living in rocks and caves deep underground. Bor's three sons formed a bowl from Ymir's skull and used it to make the sky. They flung Ymir's brains into the sky which formed the clouds. Then they took the sparks and burning embers that were flying about after they had been blown out of Muspell, and placed them in the midst of Ginnungagap to give light to heaven above and earth beneath. To the stars they gave appointed places and paths. The earth was surrounded by a deep sea. The sons of Bor gave the mountains near the sea to the newly created rock giants for their settlements. The gods then formed Midgard from Ymir's eyebrows. Two trees grew out of Midgard, an ash tree and an elm tree. From these trees, the gods carved a man and a woman, Ask and Embla, the father and mother of all human beings. The gods then set the heavens, the sky and earth with the sun and all the stars, and placed them in a giant ash tree to decorate it. The tree grew so tall that it took up the whole cosmos, so the gods created a rainbow bridge to get from earth to heaven. They then created Vanaheim, the home of the nature gods who tended to the forest and protected the trees. The nature gods used leaves to create faeries, and from some of the faeries, a magical race of light elves emerged. The light elves went to war with the dwarves. After the war, some of the elves stayed in Svartalfheim while some of the dwarves stayed in Alfheim, and this exchange saw the evolution of hobbits, gnomes, wood elves and dark elves. Then a war broke out between the Aesir gods and Vanir gods. After the war, Njord, Freyr and Freyja went to stay in Asgard while Hoenir and Mimir stayed in Vanaheim, in order to ensure peace among the gods. But the god Loki was a trickster and malicious god who prefered the company of giants. Loki married the giantess Angrboda, and together they parented a race of demons and had three children: the first was Hel, the mother of dragons and goddess of the underworld. The second was Jormungand, a giant sea serpent which encircled the entire world. The third was Fenrir, a ravenous wolf. Loki also became the father of many other malicious creatures that would become the sworn enemy of gods and men. Thus the realms were formed and all the races borne. May you ride in good haste with your back to the wind. Just be sure to watch behind you when you ride.
