personality
Ask anyone knows her and her family well enough and they'd tell you Bea's one of the most headstrong of the Messina family's women (with the exception of and in stark contrast to her cousin Hera who, from the day she was born, had none of their bravado and yet all the sweetness). At first glance, she's all passion and action, never ceasing to flit from one point to another to create or fix something or other; there's a surety about her that undoubtedly intimidates. Many would've avoided her were it not for the healthy helping of good-natured cheer which many find a refreshing redeeming quality. Yes, she's driven, but she also tries to work at tamping it down on occasion to prevent it from becoming the excuse by which her relationships suffer, and if there is anything Bea holds of utmost importance, it's the ties that bind. Once she's taken people into her fold, she does whatever it takes to ensure their happiness and best interests are taken care of. (Of course, within reason.)

Independence comes at a close second of things she holds of utmost importance. As much as she cares to help, she will only do so inasmuch as she's satisfied they're able to get back on their feet. She values self-reliance and being able to pick herself up and dust herself off no matter what comes to her—with a good bit of humour to help cushion the blow, at that. Conversely, there is nothing she finds more irritating than pure dependence and little effort to better oneself, especially after her help. She views it as being taken advantage of, and she takes no more kindly to that than she does dependence.

For all the energy and cheer she exudes, however, the particularity and utmost care by which she handles most things stems from a need to staunch and make up for past pains—her own and others', if she can help it. She doesn't fear her vulnerability knowing that it's there and won't go away as easily, but the more she's able to prevent more of it from building up, the better. Once bitten, twice shy.

history
Despite all the excitement living within the vicinity of a large Sicilian family could bring, Bea had a more or less calm, stable childhood. Both her parents were academics who met at a conference and haven't quite stopped making eyes at each other since. Her family had firmly established their roots for four generations in the town she was born, she and her branch of the family would've stayed were it not for an opportunity her father had been offered to teach as an adjunct professor elsewhere. She was fourteen when they moved to ---. Despite the physical distance between --- and the town she grew up in, they always made it a point to go back and visit as often as possible.

It was when she had finally settled into her new home and school when she met someone who, despite not having known him for very long, became the motivation behind the person she is today: Benedict Chevalier.

It became apparent to her that there was chemistry between them in sophomore year of high school. Everything felt like it was falling in place: she was performing well both in and out of academics, she was in love, she was paving her way to the Ivy Leagues—what could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, she hadn't counted on being unceremoniously dumped before graduation, and while it didn't alter her plans to go to Columbia—in fact, it only solidified them—it did end up giving her some time to think. After coming to the conclusion that the whole thing was a mawkish affair in which she'd naively grown emotionally dependent on him for three years, romantic attachment in general became unpalatable. She did, however, see the silver lining. Free from attachment, she was free to improve herself far more than if she had continued to mope. She threw herself into her studies, advocacies and work until he and everything linked to him was relegated to the back of her mind.

That, combined with a certain Mumford and Sons song, but she'd never let that and the fact she had it on repeat for weeks on. Not at all.

So begins...
