Arc 1
Village of Demons

There are many secrets in the world of Arius. Many secrets that only few know of. There is however one that knows many secrets, and thus passes them along to his closest friend, a dragon. Surely this dragon knows more than he's said... but that's part of the mystery. This 'one' is a hybrid were-wolf/cat from the Dawnwolf clan in the forest. They call themselves 'peacekeepers' due to their duties to help other creatures equally. Some may think their methods are crude and some may think they are marvelous. It's just how you look at it though.

"I think we're there Kim. I can smell the blood from here, can't you?" Asked the wolf/cat, Fennek is his name.
He calls himself Fen.

This is where the story begins with our two travelers, Kiminith (a dragon) and Fen.

"Some of the birds have told me about this place. They say something is slaughtering people in the middle of the night. They say it's got red eyes that burn like hell itself. Sounds interesting right?" Fen asked with a grin.

As excited as he was, he was still a bit nervous to what this 'creature' could be. Could be anything... though the red eyes stuck out a bit more. Hell hound? Possibly. Orcs? No they were too far south for them. Owlbears were a possibility too... The more he thought about it, the more excited Fennek got.

Kim stepped up beside his traveling companion and looked out into the horizon. He could see clouds of smoke not too far off which is where he assumed the village was. "I've been smelling blood for awhile now.", he replied with a frown, honestly not understanding Fen's excitement. Though he was used to it by now, he'd been traveling with the wolf hybrid long enough, it still always struck him as odd.

"What do you think it would be?", he questioned as he continued down the path towards the village, Fen a few steps behind him like always. He still couldn't understand why the wolf hybrid insisted he walk in front when the path was clearly wide enough for them to walk side by side. Nonetheless, he looked back and continued speaking. "I know you already have your theories.", he stated knowingly.

Fen grinned a bit, his mind taken off of the future task as he watched the dragon's tail swish back and forth.

"Could be a number of things. All I know is that it comes by night and has red eyes. Which narrows it down quite a bit all considering..." He murmured as he hesitantly took his eyes from Kim. "We'll just have to see what the villagers say about this." He added, speeding up and walking beside his friend. "What do you think it could be oh great and knowledgeable dragon?" He asked, grinning up at Kim.

He knew the dragon had a bit of input. He had to! He was not going to let Kim sit this one out either. Last time all the dragon did was sit back and watch, not that Fen wasn't doing the same thing... it was the fact that he hardly did anything. Lazy thing.

Kim remained silent for several minutes, several different possibilities running through his head. "I am unfamiliar with most of the creatures in this country.", he admitted as he looked over at Fen. "But if we were back in my homeland... I would have guessed it a kobold..." He sneered a bit just saying the creature's name. "They are horrid pests...", he muttered distastefully, remember a run in he'd had with some when he was but a hatchling.

"I did not think there were any in this area though...", he continued after a moment, frowning as he pondered over the situation. "Though I suppose we will see in time.", he added as he looked ahead, watching to village come ever closer.

Fen shook his head a bit.

"I don't think it's a Kobold." He stated. "People are being slaughtered in the middle of the night. I don't think a Kobold would do that. They have their own things to protect, why go after humans like this?" He explained as he stopped at the edge of the trees and looked out at the village. "They're burning flesh..." He murmured as he covered his nose. "How I hate the smell of burning human flesh." He took a breath through his mouth and exhaled through his nose. "This is going to be one hell of a stay, isn't it."

He started down the path to the village, the smell of death and decay getting stronger as he went. He almost wanted to turn back, but he just couldn't. These people needed help and that's what he did. He helped people. That was his job after all.

"You are certainly using the word hell a lot today.", Kim replied as he followed after the wolf-hybrid. He didn't particularly mind the smell of anything burning, especially flesh. He didn't voice this aloud though, not sure what Fen would think. Though he couldn't help but take a rather deep breath through his nose, which came out as a wisp of smoke when he exhaled.

"I do wonder if we will be so readily accepted in the village.", he mused as they reached the gates of the small settlement. "I imagine that the humans here are on high alert.", he continued, before having his statement immediately validated as an arrow struck the ground between him and Fen. A call followed right after, demanding that they identify themselves and their purpose.

Fen's ears lowered against his head and he growled loudly. "If they don't want our help then they can die." He spat before taking a breath and calling to the humans. "We're here to solve your... problem!" Really he wasn't sure of how else to put it. If the humans refused, he would move onto another problem and leave them to their own fates. The only thing that would bother him from that is not knowing what the creature was that was doing the slaughtering. The wolfcat glanced back at the dragon and scoffed. "Enjoying the smell, Kim?" He asked with a bit of a grin.

"How could you tell?", Kim replied, smirking a bit as he inhaled deeply once more. The guard up on the gate remained quiet but a few moments later the large wooden doors began to open, being pushed by more guards inside.

"It seems they are desperate for help.", the dragon noted as he took the initiative and strolled inside, swishing his tail curiously as Fen followed behind him. The smell of burning was stronger once they were inside, and Kim couldn't help that his mouth watered a bit. He couldn't recall ever eating human, but they certainly smelled tasty. "Where do we start, then?", he questioned after a moment as he turned to look at his companion. All around them, villagers peeked out of there homes curiously.

Fen looked around for a moment before going over to one of the villagers. "What's been happening here. I need details, even if they're terrible to think of." He stated, frowning a bit.

He didn't like this village. It gave him a strange feeling. A feeling that made him uneasy. Like he wanted to run from this place. Truthfully, it was probably all the fire. He never liked fire much.

The villager stuttered a bit and Fen let out a small growl. "Speak clearly so I can understand you." He stated, flashing his teeth.

This place was bugging him more than normal it seemed and normally he dealt with humans just fine.

The villager became frightened by the growl and hurried off away from Fen, taking refuge in his home. Kim let out a small sigh and stepped over beside the wolfcat. "I am not sure your approach is working.", he stated as watched several of the other villagers shut themselves in their houses, curtains drawn tightly shut. He sighed again and placed his hand on Fen shoulder, hoping to calm his companion down some. The wolfcat always got worked up in situations like this.

"You here to help?", a voice called out as they were greeted suddenly by a large man. "The gate guards tell me you came to fix our... problem.", The man added, imitating Fen's earlier way of putting it. "I'm Jakol, acting head for the time being, considering the last one turned up dead this morning." He frowned grimly and shook his head before looking over at Fen and Kim. "So what do you think the two of you can do bout this?"

Fen frowned and shrugged the dragon's hand off of him. "First of all, can we get rid of all the fire, it's making me nervous." He said, looking around a bit. "Secondly, we need to know everything that's been going on in this town." He added as he surveyed the surrounding area.

He'd never seen a village with a wall before. They had do be hiding from something, right? There was no hiding the fact that this village was hiding from something, or hiding something themselves.

"Just what are you trying to keep in or out?" He murmured to himself, not even realizing that he spoke out loud.

Jakol frowned and turned a bit, motioning for the two of them to follow him. "This way.", he stated. "We'll talk in my house." He started off, leading them through the village and right passed the fires. He sighed as he looked at some of the charred remains that now made up the ashes. "Many of the villagers believe that cremating the dead will ward off the beast. So far... it hasn't worked."

Kim kept quiet and looked around as they followed Jakol, observing several of the villagers peeking out their windows again. One villager in particular saw his looking and stared right at him. It unnerved him a bit, he had to admit, though he was quickly distracted by the smell of the fire and burning flesh.

Fen walked damn near up against Kim as they walked through the village. It was so unnatural, burning people's bodies like this just to ward off some kind of beast that they probably brought upon themselves. Subconsciously Fen's hand found its way to Kim's, holding it tightly as they went on. It was so hard to concentrate on the task when there was so much fire and stench, and he thought Kim was going to be useless. It seemed the tables had turned.

The hybrid felt much better once they were in Jakol's home, though he opted to hiding himself so close to the dragon that he was practically in his lap. "Start talking." He said, willing his fur to flatten back in place rather than stand up on end. Damn the feline part of him sometimes. Damn it. "We need to know everything."

Jakol nodded grimly as he went about getting a few glasses of water for his guests. "Well... I guess I'll start at the beginning.", he stated before beginning his tale. "It all started nine nights ago... there was a festival in town, celebrating the upcoming harvest. Everything was pretty normal... what with the feasting and dancing and all... but.. outta nowhere.. this guy, Kenner just starts screaming his head off." Jakol paused for a moment and sipped at whatever he had in his glass as he collected himself. "Kenner just starts screaming and no one knows why. He wasn't making any sense... and after awhile he just ran off. Nobody followed him though... we were all celebrating."

Kim raised an eyebrow as he listened, unsure exactly what they village leader was getting at. So far it didn't sound like he was talking about a beast of any sort. He glanced down at Fen, who was practically clinging to him... the dragon didn't think it was very professional of the wolfcat, but he could tell Fen was uneasy. Kim patted him on the knee lightly, hoping to comfort him some as they continued to listen to Jakol.

"Just ran off and no one cared to follow? What about his family or close friends? Was he just screaming or was he saying anything?" Fen asked, curious about what happened next.

Being away from the heat of the fires he was starting to feel better, not to mention having Kim comforting him helped a lot. "Did anyone even go look for this 'Kenner' after the festivities?" He asked.

This story wasn't sounding very good. He was starting to worry a bit. What the hell could be going on in this village that would need a big gate and fire.

Jakol frowned grimly. "That's the thing...", he replied after a moment. "Kenner didn't have any family in town... but... one of his friends. His only friend really, Letta... found him after." He paused and sighed softly. "Poor girl.. she went to Kenner's house to check on him... found him face down in his living room, practically gutted like a deer... it traumatized the poor thing. ..I guess... she didn't suffer long though. We found her the next night in the middle of town..."

Kim frowned and looked at Fen, wondering if the wolfcat was coming to any sort of conclusion from what he was hearing. The dragon himself really didn't have a clue... but he was starting to wonder if the first person who found the victim turned out to be the next victim. That looked like the case...

Fen stood up suddenly. "Take me to his house." His tail puffed as big as it possibly could, but it wasn't due to the fires. "What ever this thing is... you're walls are only keeping it inside the village." He said with a slight growl. 'Stupid humans.' He thought to himself as he downed the water that Jakol had given him. "Our best option is to go look in Kenner's home to see what he brought to this village of yours." He added.

Jakol nodded a bit and stood up. "If you think it will help...", he replied, not so eager to return to Kenner's house. He led the two out of his house though and down through the center of town. "...if you're curious.. this is where Letta was found.", he stated as he paused by a small stone well. "She was just slumped over it, like she was looking in. But when they turned her over...", he paused, covering his mouth slightly as he remembered. "Everything just sorta... spilled out." He shook his head and hurried off, coming up to a small, dark house before too long. "Well here it is...", he stated. "I'd rather not go inside, thanks...", he continued before wishing them well and making his way off.

Kim watched him go before looking back over at Fen. "It seems the first person to find the corpse becomes the next victim", he mused aloud. "The bearer of death has come to this place.", he continued before stepping forward and pushing the door of Kenner's house open. It was dark inside, but he could detect the familiar smell of charred wood and blood.

"Jakol!" Fen called, turning and watching the human. "Who found Letta?" He asked, his voice dark. "Was she the last to be killed or...?" He needed to know because out of all the things that he knew about, this was definitely not a good one. It was obvious that Jakol didn't want to answer because he looked rather upset and this didn't make things better.

"Kim, how much do you know about dogs? And I mean dog dogs, not were-dogs." He asked as he turned back to the house. Out of all the things it could have been, it couldn't have been what he was thinking, could it? He followed Kim into the house slowly, the scent of soot and blood. "Oh hell..." He murmured, not liking the way things were looking as his eyes adjusted to the blackness.

Kim looked around slowly, his eyes quickly catching the singe marks and stains of blood on the floor. "You know what this is as well as I do...", he stated slowly, his eyes glowing faintly in the dark as he looked over at Fen. The rotten, ashy smell was enough of a clue for anyone with enough knowledge. "Even my culture is plagued by the dark dogs..", he murmured. "....but how did this... Kenner bring such a thing upon himself, I wonder."

Fen covered his nose with his sleeve. "He probably summoned it. What happens when a pet loses it's master? It grieves. In turn, what happens to a pet that is misused by his master? They become hateful and horrid. It's doing what it was created to do. It kills whoever finds the last body. The only think we can do to help this village is kill the dog or send it home." He explained as he kicked a burnt up bowl out of his way. "If anything... a dog is pretty loyal and it always comes home."

Kim looked over at Fen as he tried to get into his head and figure out what the wolfcat was thinking. "Do you intend to stay here for the night?", he asked. "... perhaps the creature originates here each night before it begins it's hunt." He grinned a bit as Fen nodded, confirming that he was indeed coming to the right conclusion. "Will you be able to handle this house tonight...?", he question. "The smell will not leave...", he warned.

"Tell me Kim, do you know how to kill a dark dog?" Fen asked as he moved around the house. "Because truthfully, I don't." He admitted as he ran his hands over a burned table. "Would you feel upset if we couldn't help these people?" He questioned, turning his attention back to the dragon that was standing not far from him. He didn't want to leave these people do the hell that this Kenner had brought to them, but he was at a loss of what to do.

Kim frowned and walked over to stand beside Fen. "I am afraid I do not know either how to defeat a hell hound.", he admitted. "And even if I would not feel upset over leaving these humans to their fate, I know that you would." He sighed softly and reached out, placing his hand lightly on Fen's shoulder. "You possess a sympathy for these creatures that I do not... but you are only better for it. ...that being said, I am willing to help you in whatever way is needed to save these people." He nodded firmly, convincing himself and doing his best to convince Fen that running away would not be the best option. "We may not know what is the best course of action at this moment, but you would never forgive yourself if you left."

Fen frowned and sighed. "I know nothing of Hell Hounds. Nothing other than they smell of sulfur and soot. They have bright red eyes, and will kill without a second thought." He stated. "I don't like this village, Kim. It makes me scared and I don't like being scared." He admitted. "You... you're a dragon. You probably have a better chance of killing this thing than I do." He said, kicking what he thought was a chair. "There has to be something in this brain of mine that knows something!" He snapped to himself, tugging at his hair. "Wait! I know! Dogs are loyal because they like their owners... this one killed is owner because it was misusing it! What if all we have to do is show respect for this creature? Befriend it. Maybe its rage will calm and it will easily be told to go home." He explained, eyes a bit wide.
