Introduction
Ah, Earth!
So far, the only planet we know of capable of life. Lonely, but content, in our little galaxy. Totally oblivious to the fact that there, are, in fact, other worlds, brimming with life. Fantasy worlds, worlds of technology, dystopian worlds, alternate histories, some barren, some devoid of humans, and some that are just like ours. But chances are, most humans will never see them. Why? Because even though these worlds might be stacked on top of us, squished next to us, maybe even occupying the same space as us, the only thing connecting us to them are portals. And portals are damn hard to find.
Enter the portal-hikers! Besides the dragons of the fantasy worlds, portal-hikers are the only beings who can see, and subsequently, find these portals. Portal-hikers all come from the same birth world, but once they reach the age of 16, they must partake in a Coming-of-Age ritual. For two years, they must travel through the portals, exploring new worlds and learning about all the different cultures in each. When they reach the age of 18, they return back to their birth world, and after a celebratory ceremony, are proclaimed adults and granted the extra ability to see what lies at the other end of the portal.
For safety concerns, the adolescent portal-hikers travel in trios. The gender of each does not matter, so long as there are three of them. They are both 16, and are capable of seeing portals, but not what world they lead to. The Rite of Passage could be dangerous, and there have been stories of those who accidentally ended up in the Wasteland, a barren no-man's land that is extremely dangerous for the unprepared and difficult to escape. Many, but not most, have also failed to return, either lost in a world, killed, or unwilling to go back. All are equipped with a single simple weapon, and a bag stuffed with initial supplies. When they return, the bag should be filled with a souvenir from every world they visit. The more worlds, the merrier, and the more prestige and respect you will receive. Quality also matters, though, and someone who traveled to 10 different worlds whose only difference was the height of the people might not compare to the teenager who only went to three, but nearly died in each. Of course, in the end, so long as you return, you will still be treated to the same ceremony.
So now! The Characters!
There will be only three portal-hikers (I think multiple journeys into different worlds would get confusing very fast, and I'd like to follow one story line for now). They must all be 16. Gender doesn't matter.
BUT! There are more characters than the portal-hikers! Many make friends with the occupants of the worlds they travel to, referred to as Otherworlders, and some even take these otherworlders along on their journey! You can play any character you want (vampire, zombie, teenage girl, talking butterfly, cat girl, etc) from any world you want. These characters will decide which worlds the portal-hikers will travel to initially, so choose wisely! Once we visit each character, suggestions will be brought up in OOC :)

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 2 authors
Finally, he made his entrance. He walked out onto the stage, and the audience burst into uproar, shouts and whoops mixed in with lots and lots of clapping. He held out his hands as he stepped towards the microphone, and after a few seconds, the noise finally dimmed. He paused, waited, knowing that he had everyone on the edge of their seats, and finally leaned forward. Another pause. He opened his mouth slightly. Pause....
"Good Morning," he greeted. A deafening "GOOD MORNING!" was returned to him, along with some laughs. Again, the noise had to be quieted, but he spoke without the dramatic pauses. "Good morning!" he repeated, "And welcome to our annual Rite of Passage ceremony!"
He went over the usuals. The history of the ceremony (it had been around since time itself!), the groups of three, young, 16 year-old Portal Hikers, the worlds they would travel to, their eventual return as adults, and the reward of being able to see through the portals. Everyone had heard it countless times, but it was still eagerly listened to. Finally, it came down to the list of 16 year olds. In his loud, booming, official voice, the announcer read off the names...
Ava Gardener
Ava practically leapt out of her seat at the sound of her name, face wide in a grin. She skipped to the stage, smiling happily in front of everyone. The announcer continued to read off the other two in her group: Connor Tairseach and Finn Kennedy. Both boys. They joined her on the stage after being called.
The impatient girl wished the ceremony would hurry up already. Her mind was bursting with all the possibilites of what world she'd go to, and she wanted to leave as soon as possible! She bobbed up and down in anticipation.
Connor stood up slowly smirking as he made his way to the stage his face hidden until he turned around as he made his way beside the girl. He made sure he still had his 44. magnum at his side as the ceremony persisted his attention dwindling. He looked to his side to get a better look at the girl. She was energetic and maybe a bit too perky for his tastes. It didn't matter though he would be stuck with her and the other boy for two whole years. So he would have to try his best to get them off on a good note so they don't hate him and make his life hell for a good fifth of a decade.
He knew he was at a slight disadvantage with the other two considering he was only capable of seeing certain portals but he could still go through any of them. He just couldn't see a small portion of them.

I will message him/her. If I don't get a reply from them soon, then the third portal hiker will be open.

Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
BUT! I plan on making the first post tomorrow afternoon/evening :D
Thanks for staying with me, guys!
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
@starsailor: That's fine. we have a lot of room for otherworlders.
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
I'll put up an otherworlder when I get the time.
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
Thank you so much guys for your patience with this roleplay! I have been very busy, but seeing everyone be so enthusiastic about it makes me happy :)
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
There might be other worlds with portal-hikers (it's certainly possible), and I'd imagine there would be at least one that consists of war-like people who take over other worlds via portals (perhaps it will become a plot point later) but this particular roleplay takes place in one portal-hiker world.
Hope that answers your question :)

Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
Also, if you suddenly stop posting or abandon the rp without telling me, then I will open your slot up to someone else and write a terrible death for your character. If you do tell me you can't do it anymore, then you get to write a terrible death for your character (or provide some viable excuse for why they suddenly disappeared)
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
lol, thanks. The whole idea for this roleplay is based off a book idea I have (though in the book, the main characters are different and none are portal hikers) and that was the possible title...hopefully the book will come to fruition during NaNoWriMo.
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
Also, I saw what you did with the title. Pure genius!
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
Aww, sorry Gamer_Templar :/ I might consider adding a fourth. But, don't be shy to make an otherworlder! They can tag along as well. And remember, dragons can see the portals as well :)
Re: PORTAbLe GOOD
But if there's any chance a fourth hiker could tag along, I'm game! =D
