Introduction
The year is 2025, and the world as known by people has changed from what it once was. Though life has ticked onward, continuing to march forward despite all that attempts to hinder it, things have still changed. But what people know—citizens, government agencies and all in-between—just so happens to be but a tip of an iceberg. People have suspected it for generations, others have thrown accusations that those in power were keeping secrets of this from general populace. . . . But the truth is something stretching far beyond the minds of even the most imaginative humans.
We are not alone.
Far from that, we haven’t been alone on our tiny, once thought lonely little planet for a very, very long time. They’ve been with us for eras, living right with us in the open, unbeknownst to everyone but themselves. And it is only in the recent decade that people began to suspect as much after countless years. And, even in the present day, no one is sure of them.
In the year 2025, the world has changed not because people have discovered the presence of aliens among them, or because they’ve made themselves known—rather, it has so changed because of something else entirely. All over the world—in cities and rural areas alike—there has been confirmed, and increasing reports of monster assaults. Yes, monsters. Manners of creatures that defy existence, things that take on the forms of beasts beyond the known world. What they are, from where they’ve come, and why, those are questions no known human can answer. The only known fact is that they are real, and that they are dangerous.
It began in 2015. The first sighting and report. It was dismissed as someone’s drug induced illusion—but reports and sightings grew in numbers over the following months, until at last there was no way it could be denied. They were real, they were real, and they were attacking people. These monsters were dangerous, unknown and a question. Theories were thrown around, but none could be confirmed. No answer could be provided. Anytime someone managed to kill one of these beasts, it simply vanished into the air, fading away as if it had never been physical to begin with. There was no trace of it left to even study—and even when captured alive, the same just happened. The creature simply vanished. But to all, they are known well enough, those injured and attacked by these creatures know more than anyone else that they exist.
Since it became a recognized threat and problem, things began to change. Countries became more wary, defenses increased and governments became stricter—the presence of armed officers and military forces became a normality in everyone’s lives. People have continued to live their lives much the same as before this began, but the changes were there, evident, sticking out like a sore thumb.
Though the truth was something that remained unknown among the human population of Earth—those walked among humanity in silence, and in secret knew all too well where it was these beasts came from. Those aliens who lived among humanity had known for years that one day they would come, and from where. That was the very reason they were among humans in the first place. They knew that the threat which loomed over humanity now was something none of them could imagine. . . .
From their language to ours, it came to be known as ‘The Collective’, its true name something lost to the ages. What it was and what it did was feared universally wide. It took no true form, it bore no body, and no one originally understood it—but after generations of study and accounts made by those who’d survived it, it came to be understood, it came to be known as a hivemind entity. It came from the farthest and oldest reaches of the known universe, slowly progressing through space, and dimming the lights of inhabited world after inhabited world—each one fell after the other. Wherever it traveled, the universe went dark shortly after. Why it did this, or how, was not known for millennia.
It took a time longer than most humans can imagine to decipher how it was the hivemind worked, how it was it did what it did. . . . How it was it managed to tear the minds of any being in its path from their body and absorb it into itself. Every planet that it came across with intelligent life, it made quick work of. Often it only took weeks—tearing away the minds of a world’s people before it would move onto the next. All that would ever be left behind were the many bodies. It became the nightmare of almost every people that knew of it as soon as word spread. And as quickly as its existence was confirmed, did many different species come together to try to find a way to stop it, and to save all intelligent life from its workings.
And by the efforts of many over the course of lifetimes and research spanning generations, was a way to combat it discovered. Or . . . at least a way to halt it.
The products of many experiments—the work of many alien species put together. They came to be renowned as ‘Sentinels’.
Biologically engineered and created to blend into the planet they were deposited on, they were a people made with only one mission—to keep the Collective at bay. And, it is they that walk among humanity now. Blending in with us, eating with us—perhaps even friends with us. By the efforts of their creators, the Sentinels among mankind are nearly indistinguishable from humans. But, they differ in ways few could imagine. In both mental ability and physical, they are vastly dissimilar. They possess what humans otherwise call ‘superpowers’. How they manifest is something that varies widely between all Sentinels, but remains fact is that they all have them, however, there is one ability which runs through them all—something encoded into them from the moment of their creation. A natural, inherent ability that acts as a barrier against the Collective’s own to separate the mind from the body. So long as enough Sentinels remain upon one planet, the Collective remains unable to absorb the people into itself.
And so, the Sentinels have wandered across the face of Earth for longer than any human could imagine. . . . So long enough have they been among us that more times than a few have there been children born between themselves, and a human. Hybrid children, both alien and human in origin, and in no time or era is this truer than in the current. Hybrids wander across the world, knowing or not knowing the truth of their lineages—most believing themselves normal humans. And just like their Sentinel parents though, they manifest inhuman abilities. Sometimes unnoticeable and other times, they become far more pronounced. Just like their alien parents though, each one carries within them an inherent ability to repel the Collective. . . .
It was only in recent years that the Collective came to understand why its efforts in integrating humanity into itself failed. It did not take long for it come to know of the Sentinels, and what it was they were made to do. In an effort to do away with them all, the Collective began to reform parts of itself into physical forms—monsters to humanity—and deposited them onto Earth in order to hunt them down. This is something which has been going on for the last decade as the effort to stave the hivemind off seems to be working. However, there has been an uptick as of late in how many monsters the Collective is leaving upon the planet. . . .
But, our story doesn’t take place globally, rather, it centers around a rather obscure place that might not seem a target for the hivemind monsters; a simple boarding school located on the outskirts of a modest sized city.
Marshall Bloodworth Preparatory Academy—a seemingly ordinary boarding school, inhabited by adolescents in-between the ages of 13 and 20. The school is usually just called Bloodworth Prep by most students, and faculty. It is around here that more and more monster attacks have been reported. . . .
During the late summer of 2025, a new school year is about to begin for the students of Bloodworth Prep, despite the noted increase of monsters. And with the return of students to the campus, so have rumors come alive once more. Despite the sightings of these beasts, there have been no reports of attacks or assaults—much to the surprise of many. Why this is though, no one knows for sure . . . but rumors are abound of a strange figure that has made it her duty to fend off these otherworldly beast. The students of Bloodworth Prep call her their superheroine—and claim her to possess the power to control fire. Of course, there are many who dismiss this as mere idle gossip. But, there are many among the teenage students who believe it to be true. And if it is, no one has any idea as to who the superheroine really is.
Just why is that more hivemind monsters have seen fit to attack an out of the way boarding school though. . . ? The reason lies within the existence of the Hybrid children—within the school’s current student body there is an odd concentration of them.
Of course, few are aware of their heritage and that they are the reason behind this.
Despite the monsters, and the fact that a superheroine is rumored to be around the campus—the academic year at Bloodworth Prep is set to go off much the same as every other year. And the lives of the students are more or less expected to be as normal as usual. However, it is notable to say that there was a strange influx of first year applicants to the school, and as such, some rooming situations have since changed. . . .
What the year has ahead of it for these students, both human and Hybrid, is unknown, but it’s certain to be an unforgettable one.
As far as the situation goes, there are going to be six slots open for this roleplay—male and female even in numbers. Some of these slots were reserved prior to the posting of the roleplay. So those are ones already closed and taken. The number of slots in this roleplay remains slated at six, there will be no more characters accepted after six. In order to take an open slot, you need to reserve it by asking for it in the OOC thread! I’ll confirm the reservation—first come first served. If there are any questions about anything when making a character, do not hesitate to ask me either in the OOC thread or by PM if you’re feeling shy. ^ ^ I might not reply right away as I work and am starting up college again, but, I’ll get around to it within a day.
Characters will also wind up rooming together too; I’ll be deciding those situations once all the characters are in. And please use the provided character skeleton below to make your character!
