Introduction
Based on Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
The world is unclean. Centuries ago, humankind was prosperous and booming, in the throes of a golden age. The industrial era saw an increase in production for all kinds of machines and contraptions, engines capable of powering massive vessels, moving them across land and sea and across the skies. Some were so powerful that they were able to travel across the stars, and the edges of existence were being explored. It was truly a prosperous time in human history.
However, it was not to last. The vast industry was producing more than just machine, it was producing massive amounts of pollutant in unprecedented extremes, filthying air killing and diseasing the life around it, the plants and the animals. On top of that, civilizations of epic proportions began to covet one another's powers, and soon an all out war was declared when it was nation against nation, and all was fair game. Each civilization dispatched their God Warriors, unearthly giants made as bio-mechanic weaponry, and for an entire week the world burned as these tools of mass destruction slaughtered and destroyed in a war now called the Seven Days of Fire. All the civilizations had been wiped out, their factories and knowledge torched, their awe-inspiring machines all but disintegrated. By the end, the ash was so thick it could be mistaken for dirt.
From this ash an even greater threat emerged. A dark lush forest began to sprout, growing at an astounding rate and soon engulfing all the old factories where the pollution was strongest, covering it in greenery. Somehow, the pollution infected the forest and changed it, or maybe the forest was made to absorb the dirty filth. Whatever the case, the result was a massive wood of poisonous plants releasing toxic miasma into the air, miasma that was lethal to humans. Its growth didn't slow down, swallowing the old civilizations beneath its roots and branches and forcing mankind to the edges of their world, living just beyond the reach of the infected forest, which was soon to be called the Sea of Corruption.
The plants weren't the only part of the forest to be affected. All mammals and birds and reptiles within died quickly, but the bugs not only lived on, they thrived in the new environment. Something about the sea of corruption caused them to change, developing new species of bugs unlike any that had been seen before. The kinds varied from region to region, but all had tough carapaces that were hard to even scratch with ceramic, and most were absolutely ginormous. In one part of the earth, there were bugs called ohmu that were the size of a two story house and even longer and bigger depending on which stage of development it was in. These insect became the guardians and representatives of the forest, nurturing it as it nurtured them and defending it violently if necessary. Not necessarily territorial, but incredibly aggressive towards anything showing aggression towards the forest or the bug's own kind.
It is in this world of danger and dirtiness that we find ourselves now. The knowledge of our ancestors lost to time, we are unable to build any more of the precious engines that power our flying warships and gunships and corvettes. We must salvage from our fallen foes or dig into the earth itself to find those lost beneath the surface, then use it to build new ships of our own so we can fly towards our friends and over the Sea of Corruption and even carry the fight to our enemies. Most armor and weaponry is ceramic these days what with our ancestors using all the metal they could find to build their war machines. Uncommonly, weapons and armor are made from the hardened shed skins of the bugs in the Sea of Corruption, much harder and when sharpened much finer than their ceramic counterparts. Some very few lucky individuals have access to maybe one weapon of metal that can cut through anything with ease.
We all have our own way of dealing with the deadly forest. Some of us skirt the edge of the Sea of Corruption to use the clean land for farming or to fish in the sea, keeping our distance from the lethal miasma. Some of us explore into the forest towards known ruins of our ancestors, searching for a way to either nullify the miasma or modify our bodies to cope with it in the knowledge of those who came before. Some of us learn to live in the formidable forest, coexisting with the bugs and plants and even learning how to harvest some of them, though it is a strained lifestyle and requires the supplies of the towns on the edge, which requires money, which requires selling out services to those who can pay. Whatever the method, it is clear now that people have found ways to cope with the corruption on the edge. And that could be the most dangerous of all.
While the Sea of Corruption has spread and grown to a massive size, there is plenty of land out of its reach currently, sheltered by mountains and valleys and hills and oceans. Some of these uncontaminated lands are quite spacious, giving rise to powerful empires and confederations to dominate over the surrounding area. These powerful nations control vast amounts of money and resources, able to fortify itself against its neighbors and offer protection to the smaller states in return for loyalty. However, whenever nations like these brush borders, the result is almost always bloody violent warfare. If two dominant powers come face to face, neither willing to back down, then there is always violence and it always ends when one or both beat themselves to bloody pulps.
The catalysts of conflict this time are three different nations all brushing elbows on the edge of the Sea of Corruption, nestled between the forest and the ocean. A pincer-like shape is formed by the coastline, a large patch of land jutting out into the ocean and receding inland, only to curve back like a finger pointing back to the original bump. The headland cutting through the sea creates a leave circular bay, almost closed as the tip of the headland comes only a couple dozen miles away from the cape. It is here, in the Edge, that the fighting will take place.
Hodlac Confederacy
Initially nine different provinces on the stretched headland, it now stands as one and has done for some time, and certainly in the face of its enemies. Named after the man who brought them together, the Confederacy is a rare example where people can set aside their differences for a common interest. Each of the nine provinces has a slightly different culture and a vastly different specialty, ranging from farming to fishing to mining to warfare to construction, yet they were able to come together for mutual benefit rather than fight it against each other for the spoils. However they are bing faced with a grave problem: they are running out of engines in the mines. In a growing nation like the Confederacy, no new engines to create new barges and supply ships means a severely stunted growth and limited ability to move goods. Even scuttling smaller ships and making them bigger won't help for long. They hope to destroy some enemy ships in this war, salvage the engines and use them in their own ships to support their expansion.
Melinite Empire
Established long ago by the family of Melinus, that same blood has run through the imperial family's veins for centuries. They have a vast amount of land on the cape, and within that area is plenty of space for farms and ceramic factories, as well as many mines for finding engine and ancient weaponry. Indeed, in this war the Empire has probably the largest army of all three nations involved, their vast population providing many bodies to put in heavy ceramic suits of armor. Their fleet is not the largest, but probably has the highest number of heavy airships, things like armored corvettes and elite cruisers. But above all, their aggression is nearly unrivaled as they are field by religious zeal. It is more than just an empire, it is a theocracy, with their emperor being believed to be the prophet of their god and their connection to the almighty. In fact, the suit of heavy metal armor and the great metal zweihander he carries makes him seem invincible in battle.
Vazeras Ardentium
The people of this land have much to be proud of. By far the oldest nation of the three, their history is deep rooted in struggle and conflict. The mountainous area is treacherous and hard to live in, but deep within are whole layers of ancient machines that give them many engines. The Ardentium, ruled by a council of hereditary seats, may have the smallest land claim of all three in this war, but their fleet is the largest by far. The majority of their ships are also made of wood instead of ceramic, meaning that they move faster than their enemies. Their proximity to the forest has also allowed them to get their hands on a few bug skins, the lightest and strongest material, allowing nearly impenetrable craft of theirs to zip through the air. While on the ground their presence isn't strong, their enemies should watch the skies.

The Edge War OOC
Since the roleplay for right now is just a WIP, this doesn't have much use right now. If anyone reading has something they want to suggest, go right ahead. Please wait before submitting any characters though, I want to get this up a bit more.
