Introduction
The island of Yuureijima was a relatively peaceful, quiet place. It was quiet because if its insignificance in the grand scale of things. Nestled just off the coast of Japan, the island was barely acknowledged as even existing. It was like the world did not even realize that the island was there...
The island was, however, a fairly busy place, to those who lived there. Industrial development had progressed quite well despite the island's seeming nonexistence. It was a modernized, bustling place about 15 miles in diameter, with schools and offices and countrysides and beaches and a million other things you might expect to find on such a small island. While its name of Yuureijima, or "Ghost Island," was rather sinister, the Youkai and Demons that were purported to live there in legends never appeared, and most knew the island by a different name: Seirourakuen, or "Serene Paradise."
Oh how misleading this name would turn out to be. Little did the inhabitants of this serene paradise know that below their supposedly peaceful island, there was another nature. Their island was a battleground. Not one where war was waged by armies. Rather, this battleground was one of a different nature.
The wars fought on Yuureijima, the island of ghosts, were those fought by a chosen few. 12 individuals, to be exact. Six of these beings were Human, and six were not, but their fates were intertwined to the point of being one, single destiny. This destiny was a simple one.
Their destiny was to fight, for the safety of the island they cherish, and for the lives of those who live on it. Even now, across Yuureijima, strange cracks in reality itself are appearing in unknown, dark places, unseen by mortal eyes. Beyond these ominous voids is a world, and an island, much different from the one known by the warriors.
This island is an empty, dead place where no Human lives. Instead, this dark otherworld is ruled over by the lords of the night: the Youkai and Demons of Yuureijima, the ghosts and specters spoken of in its name. These dark, cruel beings know nothing but spite for Humankind, and, if left unchecked, could spread from the world of eternal night in which they reign supreme, and into the world, and the island, cherished by the 12 Warriors, bringing nothing but catastrophe and destruction with them. It is clear, then, that they must be stopped.
If only the war was as simple as this. For not only do the Warriors have to deal with the Youkai from the world beyond...
They have to deal with each other.
At the end of the journey, there is said to be a reward for sealing the holes between the two worlds, beyond anything those who walk this difficult path can imagine: the power to have any wish granted. However, this wish cannot easily be shared among the 12 Warriors who travel the road. This wonderful power is contained within a place known as the Golden Palace, a place which can only be entered by the destruction of all Youkai in the other world, and by the acknowledgement of one Master as supreme. This is a battle without honor, without allegiance, and without a defined good or evil. This is the Yuureijima War, an event that has been set in stone since the beginning of time, a struggle which is already being set into motion...
---Setting and Terminology---
In this roleplay, there will be twelve main roles to be filled by our protagonists. These roles will consist of six half-Human, half-monsters, known as Legendary Souls, and six Humans, known as the Soul Controllers, with whom they make pacts of allegiance so that they can survive. This pact is necessary, as a Legendary Soul's magic - revolving around the use of a certain element with which they have a special affinity - is powered by the energy of another, or by their own soul, their very force of existence, should this energy be unavailable. The Soul Controllers can recover from the exertion caused by this use of magic, but the Legendary Souls, if their magic is overused without a well of energy from which to draw their power, they will enter a "Broken Blade" state, in which they will have immense destructive power, but will drain themselves of all of their energy, and will simply cease to exist. However, Legendary Souls are not the only ones who profit from this contract. In exchange for their power, Soul Controllers are bestowed with similar elemental powers to those possessed by their Legendary Souls, allowing to supplement their partners in combat with magic of their own. This magic takes the form of an Alignment: an object with a strong affinity to its owner's soul. For example, say a person had, as a child, fought off a robber using a meat cleaver. His Alignment might have been, consequently, Meat Cleaver. This would allow him to summon a meat cleaver made from his element - say, fire - with a special property - say, the ability to launch fireballs when swung. The Alignment does not, however, need to be so literal, so knock yourselves out. On a final note, each Alignment will have its own unique name, likely one that is meaningful to both the weapon and the wielder. For example, our example of a fire-cleaver might be named something like "Burning Courage," as a reference to both the nature of the weapon, and to the event that shaped the wielder's soul into that form. Alignments are almost unbreakable, and stand on even footing with the incredible magical powers of a Legendary Soul.
Soul Controllers do not have unshakable authority over the Souls they command. If their master is slain or surrenders control of a Legendary Soul, that Soul can make a contract with another master to continue its existence. Soul Controllers can also submit themselves to the authority of another Master, removing them and their Legendary Soul from the candidates for having their wishes granted, but allowing them to keep their lives in exchange for serving another Master.
On a final note, Legendary Souls are born as Humans, but possess the souls of legendary creatures within them, allowing them to transform into an alternate form with some of the traits of their base mythical beasts. They grow up among Humans, waiting for the day that they will be found by their Soul Controllers, whom they feel a special supernatural connection to, for the day that the war will begin. They instinctively know the way the war works, although they do not know the identities of the other Soul Controllers and Legendary Souls.
Each Legendary Soul has a certain combination of Mythical Beast, Element, and weapon. The first two are connected, but the weapons can be chosen from a list of weapons which will be provided below. The weapon used will likely determine the Legendary Soul's battle style. For example, a Legendary Soul whose weapon was a magic staff would likely rely on ranged spells and such, whereas a Legendary Soul who wielded a claymore would favor close combat. See below for a complete weapons list.
All of the main characters will, for plot convenience, be high school age, and attend the same school, given that there's only one high school on the island, the Yuureijima Academy.

"Besides, I wing a lot of things. And him coming over here, we'll just have to see how things play out, huh Ikato? No, I did not plan out anything for it. Hey, I'm pretty short-sighted a third of the time. And you're stuck with me, so you should get used to my failure in some aspects." The fem made a sour face at him, then motioned through the door, and small smirk on her face. Payback time~ She sang to herself mentally, waiting for the boy to get in the building.
