Introduction
Mankind always thought the end of Earth would be something catastrophic, something brought on by humans, something that would cause mass devastation, and bring about the apocalypse. All of that was correct, except for a few details of note. There was no war, there were no zombies, there was no rapture. Humans of the Earth were always so fatalistic and self-loathing. There was no bang, but a whimper.
It was the 23rd century when patient zero was infected. They called it the gunpowder flu. It spread quickly, as it wasn't exclusive to humans. Water supplies, air, livestock, even plants transmitted the disease. Victims would report flu-like symptoms the first day, and the next day they would be coughing powder as their lungs filled with the combustible bacteria. If brought close to flame, all nearby spores would ignite, and if your lungs were full of this, you would rupture, spreading the spores to all nearby life forms. Millions died in the first week alone, and it was immediately apparent that there would be no medical breakthrough or vaccine. Nowhere on the life-filled planet was safe. The only solution was to leave the Earth. Survival wasn't easy, and even more died on board the weak hydrogen engines. But soon, the planet Mars was settled, and within the next 500 years, it would become just as habitable as the old Earth.
A lot happened in the time on Mars. Scientific breakthroughs, many of them. No ancient civilizations discovered, but once the colonies had a firm footing, space travel technology had expanded enough for the exploration of the rest of the solar system. Colonies sprouted on asteroids, the previously undiscovered planetoid Aphrodite between the transit of Mars and Jupiter, Callisto, and even the methane moon Titan, they were all transformed into habitable worlds. Humankind spread throughout the solar system, and the use of black hole engines and low mass gateways allowed ships to reach faster-than-light speeds.
However, the solar system was big, even for the engines of the time. Even if you hit every gateway between Mars and Uranus, it would take one at least two years to reach Pluto. The colonies were all disconnected from eachother, even when the domes were taken down on Mars. It was big, and lonely, and quiet. Even by the peak of 3000, mankind's collective knowledge of the universe was limited.
That is the position of where mankind as a race now sits.
Leave the solar system however, and you will find Planet Opule. Planet is an overstatement, however. It started off as an artificial planet, built by a now long dead civilization. Soon other races came, and populated it, and soon, they expanded upon it. Other structures were built off of the world's framework, all races began to pitch in. Soon, the once planet, wasn't spherical at all. It resembled a giant, warped anomaly, which just floated through space. Artificial gravity corework underneath the surface once held everything together, but now the object has been expanded so much, that it has it's own gravitational pull, and races who want to stake their claim on this world have to also volunteer to do their own framework alterations. A stable atmosphere hangs over the world, giving it a sky which always varies in color. At the very center of it all, in the one district that was once part of the original planet, is the Controller. The Controller is a 50,000 year old being, which claims sovereignty over the world, which they named Opule. The Controller welcomes all races to inhabit Opule, promising it to be a safe haven, a paradise, a place that all sentient life forms may call home. However, you must earn the right to expand upon and colonize Opule.
Human delegation was informed of Opule, not long after Earth was abandoned. At least 100 persons were sent to Opule by zeta-reticulan science ships to work to earn mankind a spot on the artificial world. However, reproduction has brought that number up to around 720. Nobody in the solar system knows of Opule. Now, with the dawn of the 31st century among them, the humans of Opule struggle to keep their district that has been rented to them.
But humanity isn't the center of the picture here, for over 120 races inhabit the megastructure that is Opule, all with their own struggles and hardships, many living in paradise, earning their stake on Opule long ago. All stick to their districts, but commerce between any two districts and colonies is quite common.
Something is brewing on Opule, something that could endanger not just Opule, but could cause devastation on a galactic scale. Can it be stopped? Will humanity be evicted from Opule, doomed to die alone in their own star system? What of the other races? What of the worlds beyond? All will be answered, in the events to unfold.
