Introduction

In Oak Park, things are seemingly perfect for everyone. Everyone goes to a great high school, everyone is perfectly nice to everyone. And the town having a population of twenty seems to help things as well. But everything isn't so perfect for Emily Heart. She's the outsider, the girl who doesn't belong in such a small town. The reason why? She's been abused by her father since her mother died, eight years ago. Since then, Emily lost all of her friends, and the support of the town. It seems as though everyone knows what's going on, but it seems as though no one cares. Or do they? It's then that a new boy moves to town and catches her attention. Can he save her? Or will he run from her problems like the rest of the town did?

"I'm going to call social services. They've helped my family. They will help you. Just please don't let him hurt you." After a minute Zane decided something. "I won't let you go back inside." He knew he was being pushy for just meeting her but he couldn't let this go on. It would eat him up knowing she was being hurt.

Zane grabbed her are and put it around his neck and he lifted her up bridal style. Hopefully she was to exhausted to fight back. He didn't mind if she fought against him, he would gladly take the beating if it meant she was safe. He started towards the his house, eight blocks away.

All the way to his house he said soothing words to her trying to calm her down. He let her do whatever was necessary. She could cry, beat, or simply just let things happen. He carried her all the way home holding onto her tightly. "Everything will be okay." He cooed

"I'm going to call social services. They've helped my family. They will help you. Just please don't let him hurt you." Emily inched back, staring at him with wide eyes.

"Wait, Zane, they'll arrest him! That's not what my mom would have wanted at all." She was supposed to do what her mom wanted. To take care of him after she was gone, and she had! Of course, there had been a price for doing the wrong thing, but she had been able to deal with that. Sort of.

As Zane lifted her up, the world spun and Emily groaned. She tried pushing against his chest but she knew that her strength was probbly less than that of a mouse at this point, what with all the blood loss and crying jags. Eventually, she just gave up and leaned her head against Zane's chest, letting the rocking movement of being carried soothe her. She let her eyes drift closed, but she didn't fall asleep. She could hardly ever fall asleep anyway. The nightmares always plagued her.

"He wasn't always like this, you know," she said softly. "My dad used to be the kindest human being on the planet, back when my mother was still alive. He did all the things good father's do, like, buying me ice cream and teasing me playfully, or even helping me with my homework. And when mom got sick, he tried to be the best father he could, but eventually his drinking just took hold. I did my best to take care of him, but sometimes I slipped up, and that's when the hitting started. I've never been to the ER, I even patched up my own broken arm and dislocated shoulder, so that they would never grow suspicious about how many injuries I had. I've never been a good liar anyway, and that's just too many lies to come up with." Emily curled against Zane, liking the way his arms around her made her feel safe. She hadn't felt safe for a long, long, time. "He really is a good father, Zane. He just takes some getting used to."

"I believe you." Zane spoke softly. "My father was the same way." He sighed deeply. "But if your mom was anything like my mother she would never have wanted this to happen. She wouldn't want her daughter to be abused many more ways than one." He hugged her closer to his body.

"Why I was 10 my father lost his job. He couldn't deal with having me my baby sister and my mother with no job. So, to make ends meet he started selling drugs but he started doing them on top of drinking. I never knew this until I was thirteen when he did it in front of me in my sister when my mom was at work, I also found out he was beating my mom the day she came home and yelled at him for doing it in front of us." He told her his life story to keep her mind off her own. "Before the drinking, drugs, and abuse, my father was the best dad in the world. Once when I was six, my dad got a bonus payment from his job. To celebrate he took me and my mom to a lake house he rented. It was the best day I've ever had." With a sad expression he kept walking toward his house.

"When I turned sixteen I stood up to him. He almost killed my mother and was starting in on my sister. I built up my strength and took him down. He was in prison for five year. He escaped two months again. He almost killed my mom again a week before we came here. He's locked up again. But no body knows for how long." Zane reached the steps to his house. He carried her up the steps and managed to open the door.

"Mom, Zoey. We have a guest." His mom was sitting up now and Zoey was sitting on the floor working on homework. They both looked up wide eyed. Zane sat Emily on the chair next to the couch. "Mom, Zoey, this is Emily. I'm going to help her." He walked over to his mom and kissed the top of her head and walked into the kitchen with his cell phone in hand dialing his case workers number. "Sindy, It's me Zane. I need your help... No he hasn't found us... Well, If you'd give me the chance I could tell you why... One of my friends from my school needs your help.. Yeah... Okay.. Thank you." Zane hung up the phone and smiled at Emily.

Zane grabbed a wet wash cloth and brought it over to Emily handing it to her. "I bring you some of my moms clothes if you want to change."

Emily listened as Zane told his story. They really weren't that dissimilar, except for the fact that his mom was alive and his dad was in prison. "I'm sorry that happened to you," she said. Although, she knew her apology wouldn't mean anything to him, just as his wouldn't mean anything to her. It had happened. No apology could fix that.

When they got to a house, Emily looked up as Zane carried her inside. His mother and sister were there, and they stared at her as Zane put her on a chair. As Zane walked away, Emily stared back at his family. "Um...I'm sorry...I didn't mean to impose..." She knew she looked like a mess, what with blood matted in her hair and long gashes down her face, not to mention the blood and dirt that stained her clothes. She looked up and sighed in relief as Zane walked back in. She hated awkwardness, and it was obvious that Zane's family had no idea what was going on or why some strange girl was in their house. "I'll bring you some of my moms clothes if you want to change." She nodded, starting to wipe off the blood. Realizing it was making the situation more awkward with her just sitting there wiping blood off her body, she cleared her throat. "Um, can you show me to the bathroom?" She asked Zane, not meeting his eyes.

Zane held his hand out to help her up. When she took it he lead her down the hallway past the kitchen, past his room and past his moms room. Zoey had the biggest bedroom upstairs that had her own bathroom. He showed the the bathroom and gently shut the door once she was inside.

Going to Candy's room he searched her closet and sock drawer. His mom and sister followed him into the room. "Why is she here?" Candy asked, not in an angry voice just curious. "She has been hurt by her father. So we are helping her." He said pulling out a plain pair of underwear and bra and white tube socks. "Sindy, told me to keep her here till she gets here. She will assess the damage and go from there." He walked to the closet and pulled out an older baggy shirt and a pair of sweat pants to keep Emily comfortable.

"I'll be missing a few days of school. I'm going with her. Zoey I need you to run to the store and grab food." He knelt in front of her giving her money he pulled out of his wallet. He didn't worry about Zoey because she's done this many times and can take care of herself if someone tried to harm her. Zane taught her self defense as soon as his dad was behind bars.

Zane left the room walking back to the bathroom. He knocked gently "Em, I have your clothes."

Emily took Zane's offered hand and as he was leading her down the hall she peeked inside all of the rooms they passed. When they crossed a room that was obviously his, she looked inside and saw several boxes strewn about, so he obviously hadn't finished moving in yet. That reminded Emily that she had really only met Zane a few hours ago, even if it felt like she had known him her whole life. He led her into the bathroom and closed the door, leaving her inside to wash up.

She turned and stared at herself in the mirror, taking in a sharp breath at what she saw.

Her face was covered in blood, for starters. Long, thin, gashes decorated her face from her hairline to her cheekbone. She had a black eye forming, not to mention the previous bruise from her broken cheekbone. She had bruises on her neck and collarbone from where he had picked her up and tossed her on the floor, and with closer examination around her midriff, she had boot prints engraved in her skin as well. She took the wet wash cloth and slowly began to wipe the blood from her face, just as her tears started to stream down her cheeks again.

Her breath hitched in a sob as she got the last of the blood off, and she sank to the floor, burying her head in her knees and sobbing as she recalled all of the times he had beat her down and sometimes even molested or raped her. All of the years she had had to live with the memories and the violence, not being able to tell a soul, but always knowing that everyone knew. Not once, not once, had someone come forward and ask her if she was alright. And now, she was sitting in a boy's bathroom, a boy she had only met a few short hours ago, after he had carried her from her front porch where she had lay, bruised and bloody.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and Emily scrambled to her feet. "Em, I have your clothes." She looked at herself again and shuddered at the reflection that stared back at her. She took a deep breath and opened the door, looking at Zane and suddenly feeling very self conscious. She didn't know why she wanted to look her best for him, but she knew she was embarrassed by how she looked now. As he handed her the clothes, she hugged them close to her. "Zane, I...I don't know how to thank you. For all that you've done. I know I only met you today but already you're the first to ever help me and I don't even know how I can ever make up for that."

Zane smiled down at her. "Just do me one favor okay?" He took a deep breath. "Don't let anyone ever hurt you again." He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and closed the door again so she could change. Zane didn't like seeing all the blood on her shirt.

Walking past his room he had almost forgot that he was shirtless. He walked in and grabbed a shirt from the closet. It was a plain white shirt with the green word Zombie on it. He was about to walk out of his room when he heard a knock at the door. Zane hurried to the door and opened it.

"Thanks for coming. Come in, shes in the bathroom changing. I'll bag her clothes when she comes out." He told the middle aged women just now sitting in the chair Emily was just sitting in. "Okay. And what is her name?" Sindy said in a british accent.

"Emily." He told her. He also told her of what he knew from what he saw. Zane got up to get everyone a glass of tea, handing it to everyone and holding his and Emily's. "From what I know he doesn't allow her to eat. I fed her twice today." He said.

Emily blushed as Zane tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, flinching away as she always did, and nodded, squeezing her eyes shut against the flow of tears with what he said next. He closed the door and she quickly changed into the clothes, blushing again as she saw Zane had grabbed some underwear and a bra as well as normal clothes. Luckily, it was her size. Is it weird that my chest is the same size as his moms...? She shuddered, not choosing to think about it. She was simply grateful she wasn't wearing blood-covered clothes anymore.

As she slowly opened the door, she heard voices down the hall. Walking quietly, clutching her old clothes to her chest and making sure she didn't get any blood on the ones she was wearing, she peered around the corner of the wall to see Zane, his family, and another woman she didn't know. This woman was middle aged and looked very professional and well groomed. She kind of scared the beejeezus out of Emily in an intimidating kind of way just by looking at her.

Emily cleared her throat and shuffled her feet, choosing only to look at Zane, the person she was most comfortable with. "Um, I...I think I cleaned up everything in there. Let me know if I missed something and I'll fix it." She was used to cleaning to perfection, and she especially didn't want Zane to find any of her blood in his bathroom. That was gross if not just plain rude of her.

Zane smiled at Emily and walked over to take her clothes and put them in a big baggie. "Em, this women her is Sindy. She is our Social Service case worker. She's going to take you back in my bedroom and talk to you alone. Is that alright?" He asked if she needed him in with her he would go. But he thought that she might not want anyone to hear her story.

Sindy stood up and greeted Emily. "It's nice to meet you Emily. I'm Sindy." She placed a gentle hand on Emiy's shoulder. While Zane handed her tea. "Zane, Dear. Could you gather some cookies?" Sindy said politely asking. Zane nodded his head and walked into the kitchen putting packaged cookies onto a plate and walking back out. Sindy took the plate and offered one to Emily while she at a small one to show it was okay. Sindy never knew what she would walk into but She would be as gentle as she could be.

"Em, this women her is Sindy. She is our Social Service case worker. She's going to take you back in my bedroom and talk to you alone. Is that alright?" Emily turned frantically to Zane, latching her hand onto his and shaking her head as she felt tears prick her vision. "What?! No. Zane, please don't leave." She asked with a terrified tone in her voice. She was terrified that if Zane left, she wouldn't be able to bring herself back from her past.

The woman named Sindy rose and said hello, placing a hand on Emily's shoulder. Emily flinched and moved away a fraction of an inch. That was the bruised shoulder, but that wasn't why she flinched away. The only person she had ever let touch her was Zane, and she didn't even know why. But other people touching her terrified her, made her think of times when she was touched against her will. Sindy asked Zane to get cookies and Emily let go of his hand so he could get the cookies. When he returned, she moved closer to him so her arm was barely brushing his, but his prescense was intensely soothing, and it helped Emily breathe. Sindy offered her a cookie, even eating one herself, but Emily simply shook her head and glanced at the floor. She was always starving, and a part of her seriously wanted to scarf down that whole tray, but when she was nervous, she couldn't eat a bite. And she was nervous, insanely nervous.

She had always been told to stay away from the police, social workers, etc. It went against her entire upbringing to be this close to one. She remembered her father yelling at her, as he had her chained up against the wall. There had been some suspicion at her elementary school about her being abused, and her father had had to go threw some interview to prove he was not an abusive parent. He passed, but as her punishment, he threw her against the wall and chained her up tight, leaving her there for the whole weekend. When Emily looked into Sindy's eyes, all she experienced was the fear of being chained to the wall, being yelled at the law could not be trusted. This woman was nice, but could she override Emily's long-standing trauma? She didn't think so.

Zane grabbed Emily's hand. "Everything will be okay." He said and gave her a smile. Sindy walked them to Zane's Room and sat in Zane's computer chair.

Zane led Emily to his Queen sized bed. His walls were and off white with a trim of brown. He had two windows one right across from the door and one on the adjacent wall. He had a desk with a laptop next to the closet door that was on the wall to the right of the his bedroom door. His be was on the same wall with the door and he had two bedside tables on both sides of his bed. His comforter was a plain black with red on the other side. He didn't have much else unpacked the rest were in boxes scattered around the room.

Setting the plate of cookies beside Emily Sindy interlocked her hands together resting them on her knee. "Emily. I know you have probably gone through what no teenager should have to go through. But If you can help me help you, I insure you everything will be fine. For now, I'm going to have you stay with this nice family. We will tell your father in a letter, but we won't say who you are with. Just that you are okay. I want you to trust me Emily. I promise I won't hurt you, or let anyone hurt you again." Sindy said in a calming voice.

"Can you tell me what has happened, Emily?" Sindy didn't bother taking a notepad out and write what she said. She memorized everything and found that writing things down scared the victim.

Emily followed Zane back to his room, taking a seat next to him on the bed. "Everything will be okay." Zane smiled at her and Emily tried, but couldn't get more than a slight turn of her lips. When Sindy sat down, Emily watched as she made herself comfortable. She had yet to judge this woman, but it looked as if she had no choice but to tell her her story.

"Emily. I know you have probably gone through what no teenager should have to go through. But If you can help me help you, I insure you everything will be fine. For now, I'm going to have you stay with this nice family. We will tell your father in a letter, but we won't say who you are with. Just that you are okay. I want you to trust me Emily. I promise I won't hurt you, or let anyone hurt you again." Sindy said and Emily snorted softly. This woman didn't know who her father was. "He won't react well to that letter. He'll throw things, hurt himself or the house. And it won't matter if you don't tell him where I am. He knows where to look. This is a small town, and there are no secrets. Sooner or later, he'll find me. He always does." She squeezed her eyes shut against the memory of the last time she'd tried to run, and it had ended up getting her locked in a freezer for a full day. She knew once he found her this time, it would be a lot worse than a freezer.

"Can you tell me what has happened, Emily?" Sindy asked, and Emily glanced at her before returning her gaze to the floor. She squeezed Zane's hand and squeezed her eyes shut to stop the flow of tears that threatened to appear. "I was seven, when he first started. Two months after my mother died. I don't remember what I did. Something stupid like leaving the cable box on overnight. He threw me down the stairs and kicked me into a closet, locking me in there for two days, giving me a tiny cup of water every couple of hours, but everytime I tried to get out, he would slam the door on my fingers, or my toes. I broke three fingers that day." She squeezed her hand into a fist, not meeting Sindy's or Zane's gaze. "It happened almost everyday after that. I would be hit, or pushed, or chained, or cut. I've got scars all over me, memories of what I've recieved punishment for. When I turned 13, he started to come in my room at night. He said I was a big girl now, so I deserved a big girl birthday present. He raped me, every night for two years. When I was 15, his drinking took hold of him, and he passed out before eight o'clock every night. That didn't stop him from beating me though. I would come home, terrified of what he would do next. Whether he would chain me to the wall and scream at me about not trusting cops or social workers after he got a call from the school, or whether he would choke me until I was numb. Sometimes he locked me in a freezer. That was the easiest of punishments. I could handle the cold. But I could never hold my own against him." She felt the tears stream down her face, digging into the cuts there and making them sting. She spoke in a whisper now, not able to contain the memories that flowed through her. "Sometimes, he would force me to sit next to him, and make me hold my arm out, while he burned his cigarrette into my wrist. There was another time, when he threw me against the door so hard my shoulder dislocated, and I had to pop it back into place to avoid making up another lie at the ER. Aside from the beatings and the rape, he starved me. He unlocked the fridge and cabinets in the kitchen for five minutes after he got home. I was allowed to grab either the raisins or the gritz. I could eat a cup of them, and then he unlocked it again so I could put it back. He always said why bother wasting good money and food on a bitch like me?" She started to sob, but she wasn't done yet. She tugged up the shirt she wore, showing the long scar that went from the right side of her left breast to the left side of her other. "See this? This is where he stabbed me after I tried to take away his beer bottle after he had puked it all over the floor." She pulled that down and tugged down the neck of the shirt. "And these? These bruises here? These are from tonight, when he picked me up and threw me against the wall before kicking me repeatedly in the stomach. And these scratches here? He threw the bottle at me and watched, laughing, as the shards cut into me skin, before throwing me on the porch and telling me that's where I belonged." She had stopped crying, now she just looked at Sindy bleakly, not really caring that she had just spewed her entire life story out. She didn't even look at Zane. She couldn't take the sympathy that she knew would be in his eyes. Because she knew if she did look at him, she would cry again and never be able to stop.

Zane squeezed Emily's hand for support not saying a word. Sindy got up and sat on her knees in front of Emily. "You are very brave Emily. Not a lot of people would go through what you have and still be a good person. Don't ever think otherwise. We will keep you away from him and you will no longer have to go through what you had to. Thank you so much." Sindy stood up. "Emily, to ensure everything goes as planned I would like to take photo's of your bruises, scratches, scars. Any kind of mark. Can we do that?" She asked in a gentle tone.

Zane put his arm around Emily and kissed her temple. "Your doing great."

Emily took a deep breath after she finished and squeezed Zane's hand back in return. It felt nice knowing he was there. Emily glanced up as Sindy got on her knees in front of her. A tear rolled down her cheek and she pursed her lips to keep from flat out sobbing again. "You are very brave Emily. Not a lot of people would go through what you have and still be a good person. Don't ever think otherwise. We will keep you away from him and you will no longer have to go through what you had to. Thank you so much." Emily shrugged, not really knowing what to say. It wasn't like she had come to the social worker on her own. This had all been Zane's doing. She should be thanking him, not me... Emily twirled a piece of her black hair and looked up at Sindy when she stood. "Emily, to ensure everything goes as planned I would like to take photo's of your bruises, scratches, scars. Any kind of mark. Can we do that?" Again, Emily shrugged. "I guess. If you have a few weeks to spare, that is." She wasn't trying to be grim, she was just done with playing an act. "Where do we start?"

Then, Zane leaned and kissed Emily's temple, and she shrunk into his arms. She didn't really have any more energy to think about what was happening between them, she just knew it was good.

Sindy nodded and took out her camara. "Lets start with your neck, face, arms and legs. Then we can do your stomach, leaving your bra on, and go to your back, also leaving your underwear on." She said.

Zane stood up. "I'm going to go out in the hallway. When your done holler for me." He said not sure if he really wanted to leave her. He knew he shouldn't and knew it was to soon, but Zane had feelings for this girl. "If you need me I'm just outside." The said and then started to walk out of the room.

"Okay Emily. If you could hold out your arm?"

Emily nodded when Sindy said what they would have to do. Then, Zane stood up and Emily looked sharply in his direction. "If you need me I'm just outside." Emily opened and shut her mouth, and then nodded. She didn't know how to tell him to stay, especially because she would be getting undressed and she was self-conscious in front of him. He walked out and she stared after him, contemplating running to him and grabbing his hand, asking him to stay with her. But Sindy soon reverted her attention away and asked her to hold out her arm.

Emily nodded and held out her left arm, pulling her sleeve back to reveal several bruises scattered up and down her arm. Many were fingers marks from him grabbing her and yanking her across the room. There was bruise that traveled from her shoulder down to her elbow from when he slammed the basement door on her arm after he had almost knocked her unconscious and she had been lying on the floor. She blinked as the camera flashed and lowered her arm, resigned to the fact that with each flash of the camera, her nightmare was closing in on her soul.

"Okay Emily. That should be it. Thank you so much for cooperating. I'm going to go to get everything situated and If need be the Nessan family will be happy to move. They have already offered. You're in very good hands." She said "If you need anything give me a call or shoot me a text." Sindy handed Emily a card and walked out of the room. "Thank you Zane for helping. Everything you're doing is wonderful." With that she walked out of the house and drove back to the city.

Zane walked into his room as Emily was redressing. "Everything okay?" He said knocking on the door so he didn't scare her.

Emily nodded at Sindy and took the card, glancing it over. She put it in her back pocket as Sindy walked out the door. "Everything okay?" Zane knocked and Emily looked up at him. She sighed, sitting down slowly on the bed before slowly shaking her head from side to side. She covered her face with her hands, holding in sobs. "How can I do this to him? He's my dad, Zane. Regardless of all the things he's done to me, he's still my dad. And I'm just about to send him away for life. I betrayed him."

She leaned against his shoulder and put her head in the crook of her neck just underneath his chin, closing her eyes and breathing in the soothing smell of him. "Thank you...I...this wouldn't have happened without you. Regardless of my feelings, I have to think of this objectively. And...objectively...turning him in was the right thing to do."

Zane held Emily tight. "He deserves to rot in jail. And you deserve happiness." He said. "No one did anything until I stood up against him. Now It's your turn to stand up for yourself. I will be with you through all of his. If you want me, I'm here." He said and smiled down at her.

Zane knew it was wrong to like her this much when he's only known her for less than a day. But he knew how she felt and visversa. He couldn't help his feelings toward her. He just hoped she would accept him.

Emily leaned against Zane as he held her tight. She knew it was the wrong time to be thinking about feelings like this, but she couldn't help it. She couldn't help but like him.

"So...what happens now?" She asked, wondering just what turn her life would take next.
