Introduction
Simon Stawski here. Got a little dragon situation on my hands. Me and the rest of planet earth of course. It all began ten years ago. 2027 was looking to be a pretty good year for me; the Maple Leafs were top of the Eastern NHL division by six points, the NDP had just come to power as the best of a bad lot (but frankly we all welcomed a change), and Toronto was all set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
So I ask you this - what's worse than being shot in the heart with an arrow, and then finding that the arrow has a utility bill tied to it? How about having 96% of earth's population wiped out by a piece of space-rock, and then finding the rock was full of dragon eggs...
The Survivor's Academy for Teens
There's a lot to explain as you can imagine; the technology we lost, the technology we salvaged...exactly what we know about the flying balls of scales, claws and teeth that now dominate the land, sky and even (so I've heard) the seas.
But for now there's just one thing you need to know; time is running out. We've been so busy trying to keep ourselves alive for the past ten years, that the whole idea of procreation kind fell by the wayside. Fewer kids being born, fewer kids surviving. Our population is being culled from above and stemmed from below. Which is why someone came up with the idea of the Survivors Academy.
Ignore the name, it was supposed to be motivational. But the basic idea is this; we've gotten our hands on all the children and teens in the region (which, if you're interested, is in the ruins of old Ottawa...it's gotten colder up here since the strike and the dragons don't much seem to like it) and created a...'school' of sorts. A school where we teach them how to survive, try to keep our heritage alive, the arts, history, science...not to mention the generation who will inherit this dragon-infested world after us.
These kids come from all over. Since the big freeze, all the smart families headed north, where the dragons seem to prefer not to go. Hell, Canada's never been so popular. So it's a mixed bunch, that's for sure. Me, I'm the lucky sod who gets to look after the 16-20 years olds...
There's three things these kids are here for.
1) To learn the stuff you normally learn at school
2) To both learn and discover the things that will help us survive the reign of the dragons
3) To discover each other...and hopefully create well suited pairs that will one day go on to keep the human population stocked.
Now...about number 2)...
See that's not a cut-and-dry thing. Humanity is divided over a pretty critical issue (when has it ever not been??). Although most of the people are ordinary civilians doing pretty routine jobs, most people are labelled with one of two terms:
Hunters - This basically describes anyone (irrespective of whether they've ever fired a gun in their lives) who believes that the solution is to consolidate our manpower and fight back, killing the dragons wherever they are found, and hopefully finding a way to wipe them out completely. Perhaps you won't be too surprised to learn that "Hunters" make up the majority of the human race.
Tamers - Again, this describes a belief rather than an activity - namely the belief that the dragons are intelligent enough to somehow be trained, subjected...and perhaps (so say some) even reasoned with. Now I'm a philosophy teacher myself, which has taught me to respect people's different beliefs. I'll just say this; I've never seen a Dragon in my Rationality 101 class...
Nobody really knows for sure which of these parties has the answer to our survival, but the one thing we do know is that we don't have the time or resources to support both. Sooner or later, we're gonna have to choose to take one route or the other. And it's looking very much like it'll be my students who ultimately have to make that call.
Anyway I hope that's all you needed to know. As much as these kids will be the death of me, I do hope you'll join us. It sounds corny, but our future does, quite literally, depend on it.

SO IF YOU DIDN'T GET THAT

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 8 authors
Cool.
He looked back and saw the girl with a really neat accent he'd seen around the chalet a few days ago...Natalie was her name. She was Australian, Wolf was Austrian...in his mind that practically made them family. He held back a little and walked up to her, holding his hand out much as Lily had. And since the introduction he'd given to Lily was fresh in his mind, and he'd been quite happy with it (even though it had apparently resulted in her running off to talk to Richard) he decided to give it another go.
"Hello Natalie!" he said, "I'm Wolf, I like addressing my hunger, finding ways to connect things and discover what kind of music people hate without having to ask."
He grimaced at how it sounded out loud...it had worked a bit better in response to Lily's approach rather than a spontaneous introduction. But oh well, it wasn't like he could suck the words back in...though for Wolf that would sure be a useful ability at times.
Simon stepped into the elevator alongside Areev, who didn't move in the slightest to accomodate anyone else, but stayed obstinately standing in the middle of the elevator. Says a lot about the kind of person he is, Simon thought, expecting everyone to arrange themselves around him.
He looked across at Elit and considered how best to explain. A formal introduction would probably best wait until the class was all assembled, so he kept it simple for now. "He's a researcher here at the academy." Simon replied. It was technically the truth. Areev wasn't a teacher...was it correct to say he was a scientist? Probably. He was known to have a doctorate in something or other under his belt, but the reality was Simon didn't know precisely what it was that Areev did. Simon didn't know, because Simon wasn't of a high enough grade to know. The Academy's board was run from far away, and told the teachers what hoops they had to jump through. But he knew that there was a lot more that went on that he or any of the other regular teachers knew about. Which, he supposed, should be a positive thing. The world was, after all, counting on the academy to figure out how the human race was to survive. Perhaps shrouding parts of it in mystery allowed people to foster hope thay they were developing a secret weapon in the basement or something that would swat hundred of dragons out of the sky at a time.
Fat chance of that.
He waited until everybody was packed into the elevator, and hit the button for the second floor.
"Yes yes," Areev said impatiently, "I just wanted to let you know that I'll be giving todays lecture personally."
Simon's eyes widened, and he hesitated before answering. "I...well...sure thing. Fine with me. In that case accompany us to the classroom."
"Very kind." Areev sneered, "Do lead the way."
'Well, I guess we have a new teacher.' She thought as everyone stacked in the tiny can that would take them higher, or lower, anyway, it combined two things Charlotte didn't like that much: Heights and closed spaces. Noticing how the man already in the elevator didn't move an inch to make space for the others she thought 'Suit dude is no gentleman...' then got in the elevator and moved to a corner before the first teacher she saw pressed one of the buttons in the control panel and the doors closed with a light noise, the elevator started moving up. Charlotte was wondering what could this other man possibly have to say, since it appeared to be a surprise to everyone, he probably didn't make many public appearances, perhaps he had something important to announce this time, maybe they would turn up the heating system! This place could surely use a few more degrees, it was cold even when indoors.
"Sorry," she grumbled, her eyes stony. This guy was obviously a complete arse. She would rather have a million arguments with Richard than stay more in this man's presence. But it seemed he would be teaching their class, at least today. But what if I don't want to learn from him? she thought tensly, What if I refuse? Once everyone was closed inside, she glanced around, noticing another girl. A grin almost crossed her lips, but stayed buried inside. Another female! Finally! As long as she didn't want to bond over girly drinks and hair products, they'd get along fine. Now seemed as good a time as ever to ask what she needed to know.
"So...is it true that one of the goals is to get us to breed with each other?" The thought of being used like a brood mare did NOT sit well with her, nor had it with her brother. She waited, the elevator's atmosphere growing tenser by the moment.
"Excuse me." Richard addressed the man. "I heard you're taking over the class today. Why is that, and why do you feel yourself so qualified to teach us about dragons?"
Terrence sighed and kept an eye on them, but sighed again, this time relieved when the girl attacked the young man with a hug before walking towards the elevator, slipping on a patch of ice and leaving the guy confused before he too made his way to the elevator. Just before Terrence reached the doors, they began to close, so he one of his arms through the door to stop the automatic shutters. Once they reopened, he stepped through and realized how crowded it was, but turned his head to the others behind him.
"Hey", he said, offering them all a friendly smile. He had seen most of there faces before and also noticed the girl he had sat beside on the couch in the main room.
Excuse me." He heard the guy from earlier say to a man in a rather unkempt suit. "I heard you're taking over the class today. Why is that, and why do you feel yourself so qualified to teach us about dragons?"
Terrence sighed and looked back to the front, hoping to block out any ensuing arguement.
He looked across at her with narrowed eyes and shook his head - not in denial, but rather in dismissal. "God help us all." was all he said.
Areev didn't avert his gaze from directly ahead of him, but formed a crooked smirk at Richard's demand.
"You heard correctly." he said flatly, "I respect your candour. And out of that respect, and to avoid unecessary efforts on my part, shall I suggest that since you are bound to sit in a class for the afternoon period anyway, you take the time to listen to what I have to say and then judge for yourself whether I am so qualified?"
The elevator pinged once again and the doors slid open.
"So...is it true that one of the goals is to get us to breed with each other?"
Charlotte tried her hardest to avoid burying her face in her palms, that would ruin her makeup and possibly mess up her hair. She just wished she didn't hear it, could a girl say something more embarrassing than that? Especially in a cramped elevator packed with men! Charlotte started feeling dizzy, unable to determine if it was because of the tin can ride or the other girl's words, she just pretended she wasn't there at all, then the First teacher refused to answer, that made her a hundred percent sure that it was true. 'This wasn't in the contract!' Her mind told her, Charlotte didn't really like kids, and of one thing she was sure: she wouldn't be having any, even at young age, that was a sure thing for her, kids are noisy and having them ruins your body. She completely missed what the others were talking about and hastily stepped off the elevator once the doors slid open, gasping for air. 'Breed', that choice of words didn't really help the situation either, but the academy was probably the only place she could be now, if only her family had known about the better situation in the north in the early days. Anyway, she had pepper spray, just in case.
He looked around him in the crowded elevator, and noticed several conversations taking place. He overheard a very familiar voice discussing the possibility of breeding at this school. He was very surprised that she would be so open and forthcoming on the subject. And to bring it up here of all places. He ignored it, just like he ignored everybody else on the elevator attempting to make polite conversation with one another.
As the elevator doors opened. He waited for the crowd to begin moving before following along with them, heading to their classroom.

Maybe she wouldn't have minded as a child. Maybe she would've been excited to fall in love, have a baby, raise a family, but now...she could never condone bringing a child into this world, where the light was hazy, water had to be triple-purified before it was drinkable, and dragons roamed all over.
"I want an answer, sir," she hissed, her tiny, scarred hands curling into fists, "Or should I ask Professor Pompous here?" she jerked her head at Areev and sneered. She was obviously sore at the fact that Simon would just allow this man to waltz in and take over his class, no questions asked. No doubt he would spew some scientific garbage about dragons being the root of all evil, and how they needed to be exterminated. They were dangerous, of course, but it wasn't as though they killed for the sake of killing. They killed to stay alive, much like humans.
And how did the all-knowing scientists expect to make the dragons disappear, exactly? Lily would bet her right arm that they wanted to train and use youths like her and Richard. The thought was almost humorous. She could just see it now; Richard, in desert army fatigues, clutching a gun and being snarky about some order he'd just been given. He'd stand completely still in the middle of the battlefield, open his mouth to philosophize something, then get promptly burnt to a crisp.
Thinking of Richard was enough to tick Lily off all over again. He seemed to be enjoying some stupid conversation with the intruder; the two were exchanging equally witty (and obnoxious) one-liners, their egos wrestling for dominance. A girl near the back, some blonde, looked horrified. Her pretty, made-up eyes were wide and her little nose was wrinkling, her tresses giving off an unnatural sheen. Lily had to suppress a scoff at the sight; was there nothing better to do with her time than to smear horrid products on her face? Simon, one of the few she actually looked up to, had dismissed her, bruising her pride and honor. Noone else seemed to notice, or at least pretended not to care. Had they all lost their minds?
Instinctively, one hand dove into her pocket, seeking her lucky charm, a stone arrowhead. Twirling it through and around her fingers, she prayed its unyielding strength would harden her resolve. She focused her gaze on Simon again, and furrowed her brow.
"Is it true. Sir." It wasn't a question anymore. She wanted an answer. And damned if she wouldn't get one.
