That's Not an Omelette

That's Not an Omelette

When a group of friends and neighbors get together, all they had wanted was an omelette. What are they supposed to do with tiny dragons?

Introduction

Image

Image
All they had wanted was a goddamned omelette. That was all, because really, for a bunch of roommates and neighbors, the group really had a hard time just sitting down and hanging out together - different schedules and whatnot. So to celebrate their first shared free day in two four five weeks, they planned a party. They did all the works, rented movies, bought chips, and then one of them decided they craved some omelette so they trundled down to the supermarket and got some stupid eggs. Normal eggs. Chicken eggs. You know, the kind you make an omelette with.

Then some idiot decided they'd use the half-dozen carton instead of the dozen carton first (who does that) and cracked the egg against the bowl. No one, of course, expected the distressed chirping. When the egg shell cracked but no yolk came out and peeps and chirrups grew louder, the group panicked. There were many snide remarks and disturbed complaints about feathers and chickens in their food. Of course, when a pair of leathery wings unfurled from the cracked egg, everyone fell silent. A tiny scaled snout poked through the shell.

Panic ensued.

"Fuckin' shit... why me...?
"Okay, which fucker bought these?"
"How the fuck do you mix up dragon eggs with chicken eggs?"

"Woah, dibs on that one!"

Image
ImageOnce upon a time, in ages lost to history, their existence was no secret. Majestic creatures, dwarfing castles and towering over all, it is a wonder how they faded to myths. Now to humans they are but stories in books and figures on screens. However, this was not always so. In the past, before animosity born of confusion, a select few humans had the honor and utter privilege of acting as caretaker to these blessed creatures. They were always individuals of merit, destined for greatness - heroes of virtue or the wisest of priestesses or mages with vision. It was only when malicious people began to raise malicious dragons that humans began to view them as a threat. Dragonslayers became honored, not condemned, and over centuries the remaining dragons were forced into hiding.

It is truly astounding how completely they disappeared. After all, some kinds are said to grow to the size of mountains given a millennium. Others protected the oceans and all those that dwell in the deep. However, just because they now go unseen does not mean that there are gone. Just as magic continues to exist in small pockets of cultures, dragons continue to thrive out of sight. They're simply more careful about their lives.

The dragons of the world each have a long-standing relationship with an individual familiar with dragon lore and care, entrusting their rare eggs to a sorcerer or experienced dragon caretaker who will raise their hatchlings to adolescence, upon which they will enter the next phase of their lives. This should also have been the case for these six eggs. However, due to circumstances that will become clear in the story itself, it seems that in this particular case, things have gone very wrong. Although dragons may be the strongest of any living creature in physique or constitution, hatchlings are very impressionable and their minds and emotions must be developed with care in a draconic way.

If dragons are raised by normal modern humans... mm... well then.
That will be a sight to see.

Image
Image So, now you and your roommate-neighbor-friends are foster parents for a batch of baby dragons. Well, then. I have to say, I honestly don't think you lot understand what you're getting into right now...

Dragons are not 'pets', and if you treat them like one, you'll get be the one to get burned (sometimes literally, often more of a 'having a finger snipped off' kind of burned). They are the earth's greatest marvel and they know it, are born knowing it. They are terribly intelligent and wondrously proud. There is no 'pet' so bright and so demanding. They are inherently wise and deserve to, at the very least, be treated as equals. After all, they will learn to speak their minds with their minds, in time.

And that's not even touching upon the rate they grow! They may be born from the size of chicken eggs, but they'll fill your hands in a week and totter around like puppies in a month. Starting two months, they'll be the size of small children, and granted mystic guidance, they'll gain their first shapeshifting form. This form is of whatever creature the hatchling has imprinted with, so that means human. There will probably be mistakes made too, with scales and too-sharp teeth and ears and tails. Yes, dragon toddlers sound cute in theory, but aren't terrible twos terrible enough without fangs and claws and inherent control of the elements?

Well, not that you really get a choice in the matter. They're not going to go anywhere else. Why? Well, a duck follows the first thing it sees - yes, that's right. The dragons have imprinted. Each one has memorized one of your faces and recognized you as a caretaker and that isn't going to change until they reach their rebellious teen years. Good job, congratulations.

Have fun managing your social life.

This roleplay, however, will start a few hours after the dragons hatch. You know none of this above information yet and simply know that you've made eye contact with one of the little buggers and now it won't leave you alone. Don't worry about the information and such - the GM will make sure that all gets to your characters once it starts.

Toggle Rules

1. Please follow all the standard rules of RolePlayGateway!

2. Make sure each post is sufficiently interactive and moves the plot of the roleplay forward by some extent, be it in plot or character development. Please post at least once a week. If you want any help or have any questions, your GM is here to help ^^

3. Please make an effort in spelling and grammar - I understand that English is not everyone's first language or that grammar is not everyone's strong suit. I just want a visible effort - no obvious spelling or punctuation errors, no chat abbreviations, etc. It isn't too hard to run your post through a word processing program for basic checks, and if you're unsure of something, feel free to shoot your GM a PM or leave an OOC question.

4. No godmodding. This includes, but is not limited to, controlling the actions of a character that is not yours, using knowledge obtained as a roleplayer as your character, overpowering your character, and refusing to let anything negative happen to your character. Please have your character react accordingly to their circumstances.

5. That being said, please make your character original! No one enjoys a cookie-cutter personality, so take the time to give your creation life. If a character application seems weaker compared to others, your GM will notify you privately and ask for some more details or structure. If you would like help or advice, I'll be happy to help.

6. All complaints of any sort, be it of the plot or another roleplayer, are to be directed to the GM. I will deal with the situation accordingly. There will be a strict GM-Player privacy arrangement, and all relaying of suggestions will be done anonymously.

7.There is a particular time and place for graphic violence and sexual content. However, this roleplay is neither the time nor the place. Despite the dragons, battles that result in grievous injuries are unlikely, and although romance is encouraged, please be mindful of all comfort levels in the group and help keep the roleplay PG13.

8. Please, please, please read and participate in the OOC. A quiet OOC thread is boring, and there is often vital information that could be discussed there. By joining, you are expected to read the OOC thread, please!

9. Anything else that is common sense but might have been forgotten in the process of writing the rules. Use your head and judge your own actions, please.

"No way you are real."

That's what Alex had said exactly two seconds after he saw six little beaks peck their way out of what appeared to be dragon eggs. That's what he thought as the turquoise little creature stared at him, white eyes begging to be loved or perhaps fed. He honestly wasn't sure but the noises seemed rather whiny.

However, let's dial back an hour or two because the origin of a story is just as important as its end.

Uriel, Alexander's psuedo-sibling invited him and Roisin Raisin to a block (floor?) party which really only consisted of four rooms as the complex itself was rather small. At the time he was supposed to go to pick-up basketball with his friends but Uriel being the mother she was, he couldn't disappoint her and decided that he ought to at least say "hi" even though he didn't know the others very well. Most were well above his age range and probably not athletic in any aspect. Still, he went and the first hour was tolerable.

They had chips, drinks, movies, and just about everything a generic party needed but one of them wanted eggs. He hadn't actually remembered who but he swears up and down it wasn't him. Well in the interest of saving cartons, someone pointed out that the half-carton of eggs would be more cost effective and it would have been if not for the fact that there were "mother fucking dragons!" inside. Really, the omelets sounded amazing and all but here they were with theses odd creatures.

"Scree?" the one presumably known as his dragon squeaked.

Ah yes right he couldn't retreat to his phone where things made sense.

"Okay well does anyone know how to take care of these things?"

The turquoise creature didn't so much crawl as slither away from the carton and towards him.

"Scree!"

"Anyone?"

Min would never have guessed that the commotion in the kitchen was caused by baby dragons. While he stood in stunned silence, someone else summed up what he was feeling:

"No way you are real."

Min agreed. Dragons? On this planet, in this time period? In his eggs? Without taking his eyes off the hatchlings, he said, "Ok, which fucker bought these? No, more importantly, where did you buy these? Because I'm thinking maybe you should never go there again. Ever."

Slowly, still a bit wobbly, each of the tiny creatures had approached a human. The one that came to him didn't look like the dragons he was used to seeing. It was scaly, yes, but it was basically a noodle. Part of him wanted to take it apart. See how it worked. Figure out what animal its internal systems were like. Another part of him wanted to see how big it could grow. How long that would take. Could he.. keep it?

He put out a hand for it to smell like you would with a cat. It came closer, barely grazing his fingers with its nose. It licked him with a rough tongue. Then it bit down.

"Ow!" Min snatched his hand away to survey the damage. The dragon backed away at the sudden movement. The thing didn't seem to have teeth, but the pressure of its jaws alone was enough to leave a mark. He didn't do anything to deserve a bite, did he? Maybe the little guy was hungry.

What did dragons even eat?

"How the fuck do you mix up dragon eggs with chicken eggs? Seriously, somebody tell me how the hell that happened. There's got to be some difference between them and normal chicken eggs; I'm sure of it."

Marilla stared at the tiny little dragons, shocked. Dragons couldn't be real, though, obviously they were. They were real an tiny and crawling on her friend's kitchen floor because someone had tried to make omelettes out of them. In their defense, they'd thought they were chicken eggs, but still. This was awesome though. Seriously awesome. They were tiny adorable dragons. And- wait a moment. Fuck omelettes. They could have real live dragons. They could actually raise these little guys and take care of them and it'd be awesome.

"Wait! I think we've got one chicken," She pointed out, looking down at the tiny thing that had begun crawling over to her. "It's blue though..."

She reached down, lifting it up and holding in her hands gently, like one would with a cat or dog. She held it eye level, studying the little creature, but perhaps that wasn't the best decision as it decided to nip her hand gently. It wasn't painful as it seemed like the thing didn't have any teeth yet, but it was startling.

"False alarm. It's just a very feathered dragon. It's so cute! And tiny. Man, these dragons really are small. Anyone here know anything about real dragons? My knowledge is limited to fantasy novels and I don't think that's very helpful because I didn't even have a clue that these guys could have feathers."

"Well, that's not an omelette."

That incredibly eloquent and intelligent sentence had come out of Roi's mouth only a few hours prior. She was still thinking that she probably could have said something slightly more intelligent, but honestly, she was a bit preoccupied to be thinking about her dumb outburst. She had a little dragon hatchling who was definitely not an omelette, and seemed quite a bit offended to be even considered as one. Roi had tried to hold the cute little white hatchling, but was immediately discouraged when the dragon bit her finger. She wasn't alone- everyone else who tried to pick up or cuddle their dragons met the same fate. Luckily, the hatchling didn't seem to have deadly fangs or anything yet.

After Roi got over her bitten finger and wounded pride and gathered the courage to accept the little white dragon who seemed to be following her around like a bird to its mother, she looked around at her friends.

After her dragon's egg had been cracked and nearly fried, the other hatchlings started to break their shells open. A little blue feathered dragon started crawling over to Rilla, and Roi smiled when she mistook the dragon for a chicken. Taking a good look at her white dragon, who was standing on its hind legs like a meerkat, Roi tried to figure out whether her hatchling was a boy or a girl.

Unsure of how to proceed, Roi just tried to remember what she knew about dragons from all of the fantasy she'd ever read, all the art she'd ever seen, and all the myths she'd heard- but none of them mentioned how to raise a dragon. What did they eat? How did they interact with others? There was so much she didn't know, but Roi at least knew she had to make the best of it.

Ned was not paying attention to the commotion and was focusing on planning which elementary school Serena should go to. He didn't feel he fitted in with the crowd as he was much older then all of them. He felt more like a chaperone then a participant of this omelette party.

That's when he felt a scaly touch on his leg, it startled him and he saw it, a black lizard. It must be a lizard with wings. What else can it be? He then noticed that there were several of these critters around the room, that's when he heard Marilla say "How the fuck do you mix up dragon eggs with chicken eggs?".

These were...dragons...? That would explain the wings.

Ned steeled himself to pull on the wings to see if they are fake. If they are fake, they are not dragons, if they are real...he just found a member of a legendary species.
Ned tugged hard on the black lizard's wings, the thing bit him as if it was angry. The wings were real. They were dragons that he heard in story books.

That also means he can't just put them it in the wild. He has to deal with it somehow.
Ned was devastated that this fiasco had happened on the year that he has to work out the financial issues for Serena's admittance to elementary school.

"Fuckin' shit...why me...?'

Dragons.

This was the only thought running through Uriel's mind for the first few moments after he had cracked the egg over the pan and nearly fried a little scaled creature. Even now, a while after the event, with all his guests holding or staring at little dragons, he was still in a bit of a state of shock, hand unconsciously fiddling with the hair where he sometimes braided to indicate preferred pronouns.

"Ok, which fucker bought these? No, more importantly, where did you buy these? Because I'm thinking maybe you should never go there again. Ever."
"How the fuck do you mix up dragon eggs with chicken eggs?

"I swear I bought chicken eggs. Uriel shook his head a moment, trying to think straight. "The other 6 eggs in the carton were chicken eggs. I..." For the first time in the years he had lived here, Uriel was speechless and unsure of how to plan a way forwards. In the end it was someone else speaking that finally got the freaking out Uriel to focus.

"Okay well does anyone know how to take care of these things?"

Dragons, dragons. How does one take care of dragons. Dragons were predators. They... only ate meat? He didn't remember the myths well enough. "Uh. Food. They probably need to be fed. Dragons eat... sheep? Roisin, do you know any myths about baby dragons?" He knew the younger Ramos was a myths expert, and now with at least a semblance of a plan of response, Uriel visibly calmed down, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.

"I can get lamb chops sent up here. And there's milk in the fridge. I think that takes care of any dietary needs. They might need nests. Or caves? I'll.... I can check what habitats they like after I've rung my friend up to send the food over. I'll go make that call." Still shaken enough to stumble over his own mini-speech, Uriel began to fumble in the pockets looking for his mobile, before finding out that the coat currently being worn didn't have it. After cursing silently under his breath, Uriel began carefully moving around the dragons and people on the floor of apartment. "Keep an eye on the dragons." Saying that word still feels a little crazy. "And please someone close and lock the door and windows."

It wasn't a lizard. Being from Montana, Terry had held his fair share of lizards, and they felt nothing like this. This was a dragon - or he assumed his was as well, since everyone else's looked pretty much like typical dragons while his looked a little weird - and it was amazing. Although it was smaller than his hand, it was incredibly dense, lying heavy across his palm. It gave a squeak when he ran his thumb along its spine. Oh, its skin was like sandpaper. Cool.

"Well, I hate to break it to you guys," Terry said, rocking himself off the sofa, "but I've officially nabbed the best one of the batch. Look, it looks like the alien from Alien." He grinned and held out his hatchling to the rest of the group to display its bizarre featureless head. It tottered as if confused on his palm, lashing its flat-tipped tail.

Uriel was taking charge of the situation as always, but Terry hadn't really been listening. The mention of lamb chops definitely got his attention. "Well since we didn't get our omelettes, lamb chops are good as anything - I'm starving. Here, Marilla, watch mine for me," Terry said, plopping his new noisy burden into his roommate's lap. He was oblivious to the hatchling's writhing outrage.

He headed into the kitchen and lamented the empty egg carton, the frying pan abandoned on the stove. What a sad, lonely sight. While Uriel looked around for a phone, Terry leaned over and stretched himself across the countertop. Pressing his cheek to the smooth stone, he gazed somberly upon the ingredients remaining. "We've got six actual eggs left but that's not enough for all of us," he sighed. Man, and he'd been looking forward to this omelette party for a week now. The one time he had time outside his training schedule, and no actual omelettes. Kicking open the trash compactor, with the sweep of an arm, he cleared the remains of broken dreams (egg shells, they were the dragon egg shells) off the counter and slammed the machine shut.

Well, now that that unfortunate reminder of nonexistent meals was taken care of, Terry gave a thumbs up to Uriel and headed to the windows to draw the curtains.

Noodle slithered around on the table, sniffing everything it got close to. Min watched, making sure it didn't bite anyone else, until he was startled by the sound of the trash compactor. Wait, trash...?

"Please don't tell me you did what I think you did."

Min slowly walked over to where Terry had stood, trying to think of a way to fix the situation. There was none. He stared for a few seconds, full of disbelief. No, no, it was okay. The eggshells weren't that important. Its not like the dragons needed them any longer. They were only important if you had planned to write down everything about your dragon. If you wanted to keep a log, and study it properly. Like he wanted to do. His data was ruined already. It could never be complete.

"Terry!" he yelled at the boy by the windows, getting his attention. Min frantically gestured from the carton to the machine. "You just, you just!!!!!" Dragging his hands down his face in frustration, he growled, "Terryyyyyyy."

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He should've looked earlier. Why hadn't he thought to keep an eye on Terry as soon as he came into the kitchen? He couldn't blame his roommate for this. No matter how shitty they were.

When the machine had finished his job, Min didn't open it. He already knew what the result was. The eggs had turned to dust, already lost in the other garbage. There would be no way to tell which egg belonged to his dragon. He sounded more remorseful than angry when he muttered, "Why doesn't this damn machine have a stop button?"

"Uriel, I think it might depend on the dragon. I mean, all of these little guys look like they're from totally different species. It might just end up being a trial and error thing," Marilla offered, then turned her attention to the tiny feathered dragon which had somehow climbed its way up on her lap.

It had currently curled up into a tiny little ball of sorts, and apparently had been snoozing- up until Terry dropped his little hatchling on her lap as well. Then it backed up against Marilla's stomach, regarding the new arrival with a sort of hesitant curiosity before it bounded over, nudged the other with the tip of its snout, then quickly went back to its position against Marilla.

"It's Rilla, Terry! I don't know how many times I've said this, but I'll keep saying it until you get it into your head." She called out after him, then turned to watch the exchange on her lap. Her hatchling seemed more like a puppy than a dragon. It was sort of adorable.

All the while though also listening to Terry and Min's exchange, she raised an eyebrow, glancing over at the blonde, "Uh. Why'd you throw the eggshells out? Maybe they're supposed to eat them- certain animals have to eat their eggshells after they're born. I mean, it doesn't seem like it, since all these little guys just about ditched their eggshells, but you know, it could've been. Maybe we should all just wait a bit on doing anything hasty like that for a while."

"Terryyyyyyy."

Ah, there it was again, his name said with too many vowels. Well, it was lucky that his parents hadn't named him Xavier or something. That would've just been awkward to say all drawn out like Min so often did. Terry was a much nicer name in Terry's opinion - less clumsy. No one's tongue had to trip over four syllables.

"Rilla, Rilla, right. Sorry," he said, with his version of an apologetic grin, full of sincere cheer and not quite as apologetic as one would hope. Having secured the windows, since he was already standing, Terry deftly leapt over low standing furniture and prone bodies to deal with the front door. "And I'm sure it'll be fine. They don't look like they'd get full off eggshells anyway. 'Sides, they came out of chicken eggs and we have six more of those."

Meanwhile, his grey-brown hatchling left in Marilla's care stood stock still, as if stunned by its contact with another creature. After a moment, it staggered forward uneasily on its feet. It was tentative, as if unsure of what to make of its new terrain and confused as to what it might meet up ahead. It stopped when it got to close to the other feathered hatchling, and cocking its head it cautiously twisted and brought forward its tail, waving it in front of him like a blind man with a cane.

As Terry locked the door and checked the handle twice, he tossed out to the group over his shoulder, "So, it's been a good long while already. Who's ready to play the naming game? Roi? Alex? Ned?"

To be honest, he was just fishing for ideas. Despite having grown up in a town where there were more animals than children, Terry hadn't been allowed any pets as a kid, and he hadn't named a thing before in his life. Alex had his love of comic books and Roisin had her writing. Ned, well, had a daughter, so clearly he'd done this sort of thing before. Maybe he could just… piggy back of their ideas. Sounded like a sound plan to him.

Eggshells being destroyed? The middle aged man didn't care one bit about that.

Ned was paralyzed from the surprise and dread he felt as he was forced the responsibility to take care of a mythical being. Everyone seemed to be excited to have a pet dragon, but he only felt his wallet becoming lighter and his free time becoming more scarce.

"So, it's been a good long while already. Who's ready to play the naming game? Roi? Alex? Ned?"

Ned was terrified when he heard these words from Terrance, mostly because he actually had a terrible naming sense. Serena's name was chosen by his deceased wife, Jennifer. Ned was originally planning on naming his daughter "Prudence" after hearing his co-worker name his daughter "Hope", but everyone was against his idea.

Now he had to name something that he hadn't thought even existed. Ned read a few fantasy novels, where they would label the dragons with names such as, "Fafnir" or "Glaurung", but he didn't dare name it with something so grandeur. Otherwise, the others might think of him as old fashioned, which was one of his greatest fear. Ned wanted to stay hip and young to keep the "cool adult that you can totally depend on" image that was in his head. However, it's also crucial because this dragon has to live with the name for the rest of it's life, even if it's not with him in the future.

Ned racked his brain around for a minute and remembered an anime that his daughter was watching this morning. It featured an unknown being that was alien to human records, and named the unknown being with an acronym...U.M.A was it? Unidentified Mysterious Animal, that's right, that was the name. He quickly looked up the name Uma on his smartphone.

"Unidentified Mysterious Animal, the popular term for cryptids in Japan"

"What a wonderfully fitting name for the new born dragon." Ned had accidentally said it out loud.
After getting over the embarrassment, he turned to Terrance.

"Twerp, I know you're trying to rub off on our ideas but at least try to keep it unique, alright?"

He then turned to everyone else for feedback on the name.

"Uma has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?"

"Well, I hate to break it to you guys, but I've officially nabbed the best one of the batch. Look, it looks like the alien from Alien."

"Uh nice try but my dude here looks like," Alex paused for a second, glancing over at his dragon before realizing it had disappeared, "oh shit!"

"Scree!"

Alex looked over to the sink, finding the small creature bathing in one of the dirty dishes. It seemed to enjoy the half-filled bowl of water despite the remnants of food caked on the edges. Clearly his dragon gave no damns about being gross. He picked up the bowl and filled it to the rim so as to allow the serpent to swim more freely before setting it on the table. He paid no mind to the rest of the participants in the discussion until the idea of food popped up and Alex could only imagine what sorts of things this creature, this dragon could eat.

"Mine seems like more of a fish type of guy, but that's just a guess," he shrugged as he double-checked any other entrances and exits within the apartment. The last thing he wanted was one of them getting into the walls and plus, his dragon seemed happy in the water.

When he was finished, Terrance proposed the idea of naming all the dragons but honestly Alexander wasn't so sure. Naming it meant giving it an identity and thus sympathy should it ever get hurt. Granted his dragon was cool as hell but it'd be bad deals if the thing ever ran away. Not that he was thinking that far into the future.

"I dunno man, I want something cool and prophetic," he shrugged, "any ideas Roi?"

"Uriel, I think it might depend on the dragon. I mean, all of these little guys look like they're from totally different species. It might just end up being a trial and error thing,"

Having already started making the phone call, Uriel was surprised by the comment, but only nodded thoughtfully in response. Not that Rilla was paying attention any more, the dragons were very entrancing for all of his friends. "Hello, Uriel Evans here. Yes. I don't have another shift until tomorrow, I took today off to be with friends. No, no, I'm well! Ah, yes, I'm sorry to call you like this, but could you have some lamb chops delivered to my apartment?" A little hesitant in speech, Uriel's brow furrowed as he tried to work out how he was supposed to explain the odd request. "I-- Oh no, everyone here is fed well enough, of course! No it's-- We had a surprising case of baby animals. Someone put them in my cupboard, still unsure of who the mother was. Yes, it was quite the surprise, but a pleasant one at least. You know-- Oh god."

Suddenly distracted from his phone call, Uriel just stared in horror as Terry swept the egg shells into the trash compactor. Shaking his head as the sudden silence was questioned, Uriel turned away from the now crunching machine. "Oh, sorry. Something just happened that I probably should have expected. I really have to fix a mess that will continue to happen if I don't watch. How fast can you have those chops up here?" Nodding a few more times, and with a hurried thanks, Uriel clicked the button on the phone to end the call and momentarily rested his head in his hands.

Calm, calm. Just keep your calm. He never intends to mess things up. It's done now, move on, work out what needs to be done now.

"Naming is a good idea. While you all figure names out, since we might as well keep them. Hum. We can try milk first to see if they like that, Terry, come he-- Wait." Stock still, Uriel's eyes narrowed at the absent-minded tenant of the flat nearby. Uriel felt like he was missing something from the picture in front of him, but it took a few moments for the doctor to get it.

"Didn't you have a dragon? Find your dragon and I'll get the milk bottles set up with teats." Failing to notice the second hatchling on Rilla's lap, Uriel turned around with purpose, back to the kitchen drawers where he rustled around for some bottles that he could fit with fake-teats to feed the hatchlings. It hadn't surprised him that Terry didn't have the dragon with him. Of all the people in the room, it was him who was most likely to lose the dragon or have it die from neglect.

"Uma has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?"

In the middle of searching the cupboard, Uriel took a moment to turn his head and smile at the comment, giving Ned a thumbs up and a delighted "A very nice ring to it! I approve." before turning back to the task at hand.

"You named your dragon after a dancer?" She squinted at Ned, a bit confused, before turning her attention back to the two hatchlings on her lap.

Her little one seemed shocked, having been whacked in the snout with the other's tail. It peered at the other curiously, a bit cautious now that it had been injured, and waited a bit before it dashed forward and gently nudged it, dashing back at about the same speed.

"I dunno what I should name mine. I mean, there are a plentitude of names, right? I'd like to name it something cool. But not pretentious and all the names I can think of are borderline pretentious and gah, honestly Ned, how on Earth do parents manage with the naming thing?" She froze then said, "Oh god. You know what this means? We're all parents now! Parents to tiny dragons who will likely grow up to be massive and are probably intelligent. Oh god can you imagine how rough this is gonna be? Like, I'm sure some of us be fine but there are people among us, I will not name names, who probably will have a rough time like this. I wonder if they go through stages like humans, oh dear, can you imagine if they do? Teenage dragon angst? It'll be the worst. Or terrible two's? Can you imagine a baby dragon temper tantrum? Oh gosh, does this mean that when we meet up in the future and discuss our dragons progress like we no doubt will, it'll be as though we're parents upping the progress of our children? Oh this has so many implications."

Grinning, she beamed at her tiny feathered dragon, "I mean, it might not have all that, but man, this little guy is cute and there's no way I'm not keeping him. Her. I dunno. How do you tell its gender? Should I go for a gender neutral name?"

Roi was in shock- but a good kind of shock. She was in disbelief that all her far-fetched, insane dreams had just hatched before her eyes. Literally.

"Uh. Food. They probably need to be fed. Dragons eat... sheep? Roisin, do you know any myths about baby dragons?" She'd heard Uriel throw out the question, and racked her brain. "Well, they seem to be following us around like little ducklings or some crap like that. Little scaly ducklings..." The white hatchling was sitting on the coffee table, and she tugged it away when it began sharpening its claws on the wood.

"Meat is probably a good plan, yeah... I'll check my sources as soon as we get this sorted out. I feel like somewhere it said that some hatchlings eat the eggs they were in for extra minerals and stuff, so better not-" Before finishing her sentence, Roi yelped. The little scaly duckling had tried to sharpen its claws on her legs. "You stop that, little one." The dragon looked at Roisin in disdain and scratched its talons down her legs one more time before leaping onto the couch and standing on her hind legs like a guard.

Getting up and walking over to the door, she shut it firmly and locked it. Knowing how aggressive her little hatchling had been to the table, Roi hoped that the wooden door could withstand the little dragon. Walking back over to the couch, she was startled by the trash compactor making weird crunches. She heard Rilla talking about animals eating their eggs, and knew she'd pointed that out earlier. "Well, there goes any hope of having them munch on eggshells. Door is locked and secure." Shaking her head and reclaiming her spot on the couch, she looked at the creamy dragon standing guard.

She looked at the little white dragon that had emerged from the first egg. "So you started this mess, little one..." She was staring into the proud hatchling's violet eyes when she was jerked back by the naming ceremonies. "So, it's been a good long while already. Who's ready to play the naming game? Roi? Alex? Ned?" She heard Terry say, and immediately looked back to the miffed white hatchling. "Well, aren't you just a little ball of sunshine." The dragon glared at her, and then jumped into her lap, curled up, and began purring much like a cat. Roi was surprised and nearly jumped back, but smiled softly when the purrs turned to snores.

Listening to the murmurs of name ideas floating around, Roisin tried to come up with a name for her new dragon. She'd decided that the hatchling was female, based on its mannerisms and oddly long eyelashes. It seemed right. Roi had so much experience naming characters and pets that she was trying to come up with an equally awesome name for the awesome mythical creature napping on her. "You're like a little sentinel... What about Sentenia? Does that sound right?" Deciding that Sentenia fit the girl hatchling still sleeping soundly, she watched as her friends and neighbors scrambled for names.

"Uma has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?" Roi nodded to Ned. Uma reminded her of something she'd watched recently, she couldn't put her finger on it however. She wanted to look it up on her phone, but Sentenia was laying on it, and Roi knew the rules. No waking up pets, ever. She didn't even want to know how cranky baby dragons would be if woken from a nap.

"I dunno man, I want something cool and prophetic, any ideas Roi?" She smiled at Alex's ultimate question, and watched the little hatchling swim around in the dirty bowl filled with water. "Well, I did have a shark once. I doubt your little hatchling would appreciate being named James Pond, though. In my defense, I was seven." She covered quickly before she could be teased. "Your little serpent dragon is pretty cute though. Any idea the gender?" Sentenia yawned and looked up lazily, blinking sleep from her now crystal-blue eyes. "That's a bit odd..." she murmured to herself.

Grabbing her phone before the white dragon settled down again, she looked up sea serpent myths. Checking her blog first to see if she'd posted anything on sea serpents, she sighed. No luck. Searching on the internet, she uncovered a picture guide to different kinds of sea dragons. "Hmm. Alex, I think your dragon is a Bakunawa. Says here that it's a dragon rumored to have swallowed the moon in ancient myth. Not much information here, though." Turning off her phone, she studied the little dragon. "What about Atlantic? Or Pacific? Sea names are pretty cool, like Carribean. If it's a guy, though, you might want to go a little manlier. Like, 'Sea Demon' or whatever."

Roi grinned helpfully and turned to her friends. She noticed Uriel working on food and picked up her white dragon baby. Sentenia yawned and rolled over in her arms. She eyeballed the hatchling's size and looked down at her hoodie pocket. Putting the baby dragon in the big pocket, she stood up carefully and maneuvered her way into the kitchen. "Need any help, Uriel? Milk is probably a good idea, but I'm not sure how well plastic or rubber'll stand against the fangs of these little ones." Roi glanced over at Rilla, who had her lap full with two hatchlings clambering around. Furrowing her brow, she glanced around. Of course. Terry didn't have his dragon, which must mean Rilla had both hers and Terry's. Sighing, she half-listened to Rilla's rant and leaned on the counter.

"Which one's yours, Rilla? The feathered one resembles more of a female, with body shape and all. I'm not so sure about feathered dragons. I'd assume they're all slender, but..." Roi stopped herself from starting a tangent. "Any name would be nice for yours. The other hatchling... Yeah, Terry was right. It kind of does look a bit alien." Watching it stumble around and lash the blue hatchling with a flat tail, Roi examined the thing from a distance. "It kind of looks like it can't see. Do you think it's eyeless? It could be, if it's a deep sea or a cave sort. They don't have much need for sight, since it's so dark..."

Trailing off, Roi smiled as her gaze swept the room. Sure, raising dragons would be a nightmare at times, but she couldn't wait.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

It was the same for everyone. No worries.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Sorry I haven't been able to post, for some reason whenever I was able to log in the site was offline.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Not sure about others, but I'm having a slight delay in my posts due to last-minute things before heading back to the States for college (currently with family in Korea).

I guess this roleplay is going to be a bit more low-key with a slow pace, so no real pressure on anyone as long as you get posts up eventually. If this format isn't for you and you've lost interest or so, please let me know rather than fading away as I know is frequent on this site (I'm guilty of it too;;)

Sorry for the delays.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

I love writing insanely long posts to catch up! Have fun getting through that chunk of fun I have posted.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Fair enough! I'm back now so things are more stable. Tonight's my "catch up on everything" night so hopefully everything will pick up.[/size]

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Alright, in light of how slow the pace of this roleplay has been thus far (due to RPers getting busy and changing hands and whatnot), I've decided to hold off on the GM event so you guys can have a bit more time interacting with each other and having fun in that way. Just post away doing whatever you want for now, as long as you all stay in the room ^^

Hopefully the posting pace picks up and stays more consistent now that everyone who's contacted me has found a more stable RL schedule.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

In light of slow responses, I have decided that I will create my own roommate to replace Hector just to keep things progressing at a more consistent rate. His name is (for now) Terrence Halls, and his basic personality is as follows:

He's a chipper, upbeat sort of guy who likes athletic activities and is a good person at heart, but he can be kind of inconsiderate. He forgets Min's "no shoes inside the apartment" rule every now and then and just in general has difficulty thinking about comfort outside his own. He's the kind of guy who should never live with a blind person because he'd move the furniture around and then forget to tell the guy.

So his dragon's going to be blind *thumbs up*

Edit: The dragon's name is an intersex male-identifying one named Medusa *double thumbs up*

Re: That's Not an Omelette

As a note, Queirdo has informed me that they would be pulling out of the roleplay, but worry not. I've asked permission to take over the character, so as soon as I get a response, I will get a post up with either Hector or a replacement character.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Duly noted, no worries - honestly I'd be very, very happy if this roleplay picked up enough for your trip to be an issue, ahaha!

Re: That's Not an Omelette

I will be out of town for all of next week so I probably won't be posting much if at all.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

IMPORTANT GENERAL NOTE
Please only tag characters you are directly interacting with! There are some profiles that were submitted that haven't been accepted yet and other characters that have been abandoned and replaced, but if you click 'tag all' they all get tagged. Please just tag people directly referenced in your post ^^

Re: That's Not an Omelette

My PMs are crap so unfortunately it might take a while to send something to everyone. Apologies in advance ^^'

Re: That's Not an Omelette

It is done. Let us commence.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

No protests here. Feel free to kick us off.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Should I do the honors then? I don't mind anyone going first but since no one's posted I don't mind rolling something out .___. If no one protests I'll be writing something out now.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

I'm finally getting to sending PMs out, sorry that took so long. @_@ And if anyone is waiting on me to post that first post thing I suggested I was going to do a bit back, don't. I kinda got messed up by all sorts of shit IRL and yeah.

Re: That's Not an Omelette

I have returned!
*crickets*

But yeah, I'm back from my trip. I read up on everybody's new characters except for one or two, and I'm super excited to write with you guys. When I read through some characters, I was like, "Yeah, Nia is totally gonna be intertwined with this one." I look forward to being able to work out relationships, so if you want to figure something out, I'm totally game. Thankfully, the roleplay didn't start and I didn't miss out on awesome plot stuff.

Anyways, please PM any time! I'll try to get back to you whenever I can.
Have a wonderful day!

Re: That's Not an Omelette

Oh right, also I made a bunch of places. I've never been in a roleplay where people have managed to actually use the places properly before (usually my fault but I'm not actually a character here so maybe we can do it right, ahaha) so it would be really cool if we could actually at the end of this read about scenes that happened room by room. Let's see how long we can go posting in the proper places!

Re: That's Not an Omelette

hi guys. i guess i should start conversing to start on my relationships...

Re: That's Not an Omelette

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ wrote:Thanks for the heads-up (: I admit I've been slacking on finding relationships but I'll get to PMing everyone and working on my first post~

You're not the only one. XD

Since it's Uriel's Room I could even work with making the opening post. I'll wait for anyone else to pop in saying they want to open or whatever before I do that though.

I probably won't get to PMing everyone about Uriel's relations to them until tonight, when I get home. So that's like, 14 hours, but I will get to it.

Anyone who sends me a PM before then will probably get a response sometime during the day when I have a free moment.
