Introduction

Image

The year is be 1688. A few months before the war of the Grand Alliance. France, the most powerful nation in Europe, has adapted an aggressive political stance. Louis XI seeks to retain what he previously gained in the Franco-Dutch War, before the Holy League; The Holy Roman Empire, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Tsardom of Russia and the Venetian Republic. Who now are making gains in the Great Turkish War that rages in southern Europe, can turn their eye on France.

In the north, Sweden after many good long years under Karl XI von Wittelsbach, has assumed the role of the leading power in the north, aswell as the beneficial trade of the Baltic sea. Much on the loss of Denmark, whom lusts for revenge.

In the east, the sleeping bear of Russia waits for someone to awake her, for a modernised Russia is something dangerous indeed.

Under the rule of Carlos II, Spain has begun to fall into decay, and if he would die so would the Hapsburg branch of Spain. But maybe would a strong councillor be able to bring the Spanish Empire back to it's former greatness?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nations

Rulers: We will mainly use already existing historical characters, although if you want to make a councillor, you are free to do so.

Population: This is the number of Citizens that live in the nation. A small population is below a million, wich means that the nation cannot field especially large armies and do not get as much taxes. A moderate population means that the nation has several million citizens and can field quite large armies, although the current system of it's military do affect it aswell.
A large population means a population over ten millions, this nation has more Resources and reinforcements it is able to use the most nations. The current nations with that a large population is France, Spain, Russia, England, Austria and the Ottoman Empire.

Economy: This determines how rich a nation is, how much expenses it can afford to have.
A poor nation does not have especially much and gifts from them will be sparse and not especially impressive, they will not be able to afford greater wars without loans.
A moderate nation is as it sounds, moderate, they can give moderate gifts and afford moderate wars.
A wealthy nation is above moderate, but cannot becounted as rich. Their economy is doing well and they have full coffers, being able to give good-quality gifts, economic support and afford large wars.
A rich nation has overflowing coffers and makes a great ammount of money of differing things, it may be trade or maybe just taxes. They can give really impressive gifts and can bear very great expenses without ecomic collapse. The nations that are counted as rich is: France, Netherlands, England and the Ottoman Empire.

Land Power: This is how many Soldiers a nation can bring in and still leave most of the men working with what they work with, and not damaging the economy too much.
Sea Power: This is how many warships a nation has.

The Kingdom of Sweden:

Status: Great Power, Protector of the Protestant Faith.

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Ruler: King Karl XI, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XI_of_Sweden 'The Northstar'

Population: Moderate

Economy: Wealthy

Dynasty: Von Wittelsbach

Overview: The extremely resource-rich nation Sweden rose to the status of a Great Power after the, for Sweden, gloriuous Thirty Year's War. Since then Sweden has with confidence been marching towards greater power and what long was it's goal. Dominance over the Baltic Sea. After becoming the undisputed leading power in the North after the latest wars with Denmark Sweden had now achieved this goal, although the most recent war ten years ago showed that the country was in need of a reform. So one came, in a stroke after skillfull political manouvering King Karl XI created an absolute monarchy, and claimed back nearly all lands of the previously extremely mighty nobility. This, along with the vast ammount of Money coming from Sweden's industries brought the nations up on it's feet again. Karl also reformed the army and created a new great navy for the nation. Founding the great military port of Karlskrona (Karlscrown) in the process. Sweden stands with the greatest metal industry in the World, being in the process the chief exporter of cannons due to the vast fields of irona nd copper ore in northern Sweden, and the vast ammount of fuel that enables the industry in the shape of trees. With a powerful army and navy, Sweden has many possibilities. Yet Sweden does not have one of the largest populations, will it be able to keep it's Great Power status forever?

Military: Sweden has Europe's most advanced and dangerous army, the Carolean Army thanks to the reforms of Karl XI. This meant that Sweden has 80,000 in a standing army wich mostly lived in the countryside, split up in regiments. Each Soldier is to be upkept by several peasants and in turn helped the peasants in times of peace. This enable Sweden to raise great armies of professional Soldiers without the large cost of mercenaries. However in greater wars Sweden do bolster it's army with men that they called in, who was not apart of the standing army. Leaving the most men as workers, and should the need come, reinforcements.

Land Power: 120,000 (80,000 of these are apart of the Carolean army)

Naval Power: 120 warships.

The Kingdom of France:

Status: Great Power

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Ruler: Louis XIV, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIV_of_France 'The Sun-King'

Population: Large

Economy: Rich

Dynasty: De Bourbon

Overview: France sits as the most powerful, and richest nation in the world. Togheter with his extremely skillful ministers, Cardinal Richelieu and Mazarin, King Louis XIV achieved absolute power in the country. With large colonies in Canada and a great ammount of land in Europe, France has both the ambition and Resources to expand. Recently under Louis XIV, France has adapted a more aggressive stance in foreign politics. Arch-enemies to the powerful house of Habsburg, wich rules with both in Austria and in Spain, this nation will surely attempt to limit their influences. Aswell as the old enemy of England.

Military: France could rely more on numbers than actual skill, but the French troops are well-trained and well-equipped.

Land Power: 250,000

Naval Power: 160 ships.

------------------------------------------------------------

Image

The Kingdom of Spain:

Status: Great Power, Protector of the Catholic Faith.

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Ruler: Charles II, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_II_of_Spain (Unplayable due to his mental illness)

Population: Large

Economy: Rich

Dynasty: Von Habsburg

Overview: For centuries, Spain was the most powerful nation in the world, the first to discover the New World, owner of the greatest Colonial Empire on the planet. It is the fierce protector of Catholicism, heresy is not tolerated. It's a great naval and land Power, a great wealth comes home from it's colonies... Yet Spain has problem everywere for those willing to see them. Ever since the Thirty Year's War, Spain has been in decline. And now at an increased speed with Carlos II ruling. Yet still, Spain has resources aplenty, a strong army and navy, if only the absolute monarchy could be abolished, and a strong minister could rule the nation, or maybe could someone else to be found? The house of Habsburg is large, if Carlos were to suffer an accident, a new Habsburg ruler could take the throne. Or maybe even someone else, Spain is, despite it's problems, a huge prize. Louis XIV would certainly not overlook an oppurtunity like that...

Military: Spain has due to it's decline, a strong army on a moderate techonolgical level.

Land Power: 200,000

Naval Power: 180 warships.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Image

The kingom of England:

Status: Great Power

Government: Constitutional Monachy

Ruler: King James II, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_II_of_England (Although a revolution is soon to start, so it may change to William III, the current Stadtholder of the Netherlands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England )

Population: Large

Economy: Rich

Dynasty: Stuart

Overview: England is an old kingdom, and has since the Middle-ages have had the Arch-enemy of France. Although it's army is less impressive, the British navy is possibly the most impressive in the World, maybe with the exception of the Dutch, England's rivals. Will England rule the Waves, or will the Netherlands remain the strongest naval Power? Only time will tell. England has a great deal of the Eastern coast of North America in the form of the Thirteen colonies and a respected great Power in Europe. Yet problems are brewing, the protestant population of England does not look kindly on the Catholic King James II, a revolution is at hand. Will the protestant faith win, or will the Catholicism claim England?

Military: While the Redcoats are good, they do not really excel at anything.

Land Power: 70,000

Naval Power: England has 240 warships.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Image

The Republic of the Netherlands:

Status: Great Power

Ruler: Stadtholder William of Orange, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England

Population: Moderate

Economy: Rich

Dynasty: None

Overview: The Netherlands has for decades been the leading Naval Power, yet it's declining, more competition of trade (Especially in the Baltic Sea were Sweden has assumed Control and around the colonies) and a destructive war not too long ago. Yet the current Stadtholder, William has a claim on the English throne, and a union between the two would lead to Anglo-Dutch naval dominance most surely. Will the Dutch regain their former glory?

Military: The Dutch army is not too impressive and consists mostly of mercenaries.

Land Power: 70,000

Naval Power: 260 warships.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Image

The Kingdom of Denmark-Norway:

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Status: Secondary Power

Ruler: Christian V, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_V_of_Denmark

Economy: Wealthy

Population: Moderate

Dynasty: Von Oldenburg

Overview: Denmark-Norway, as Sweden, is an very old nation in Scandinavia, and before the Thirty Year's War, it was also the leading Power in the North. Meanwhile as Sweden's star has been rising, Denmark's has been falling. Much due to that a great deal of Sweden's newly aqquired Power has been at the expense of Denmark, who lost their most valuable and populous provinces to Sweden. Despite King Karl XI of Sweden is married to the Danish princess Ulrika Eleonora, the old wounds still hurt. Although Denmark still has a strong navy, and with allies, could Denmark reclaim what once belonged to them?

Military: Denmark has a moderate army of a moderate skill, although it's navy is a great deal more impressive.

Land Power: 40,000

Naval Power: 100

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Image

The Holy Roman Empire:

Government: Feudal Monarchy

Status: Great Power (Austria)

Emperor: Although the Emperor is really only as strong as his lands and Alliances make him, and the rest are not really vassals to him (The HRE being highly decentralised), the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is of Leopold I of Austria, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_I, ... an_Emperor

Economy: Rich

Population: Large

Overview: The legacy of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire is a massive Empire, although highly decentralised, who for centuries has been ruled by the Habsburg dynasty. The appearance of protestantism caused a great deal of damage and inner strife in the Holy Roman Empire, eventually leading up to the Thirty Years War. Habsburgian attempts to create a more centralised catholic state could very likely have happened, unless Sweden under the legendary Gustaf II Adolf, Gustavus Adolphus in latin, had smashed those dreams to pieces with his armies. The relations between Austria and Sweden is therefore still cold to say the least. France and the Ottoman Empire is the clear Arch-Enemies of the Habsburg dynasty. It's currently at war with he Ottoman Empire.

Military: The military differs greatly between the nations, the current leading nation, Austria, has an army of a moderate quality.

Land Power: Austria: 175,000, 15,000 for the smaller, and 30,000 for the larger such as Brandenburg, Bavaria, Saxony, Savoy and Holstein-Gottorp

Naval Power: 100, Austria has 50, the rest belongs in small numbers to the other such as Savoy and Brandenburg with coast.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Image

The Tsardom of Russia:

Government: Feudal Monarchy

Status: Great Power

Ruler: Tsar Ivan V, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_V_of_Russia

Economy: Moderate

Population: Large

Overview: Russia is vast, with great natural resources and a large population, although poor in the most else. Russia is very backwards and much of it is still pretty much medieval. Closed out from the very profitable tarde on the Baltic Sea by Sweden, Russia has limited options as it is, yet... With a strong ruler who could modernise Russia, who could Wake the bear, it could truly become one of the greatest, if not the greatest Power in the World.

Military: Russia's military is behind in technology, and not impressive at all, only in numbers.

Land Power: 150,000

Naval Power: 50 ships.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Image

The Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania:

Status: Great Power

Government: Elective Monarchy

Ruler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III_Sobieski

Economy: Wealthy

Population: Moderate

Overview: The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is an elective monarchy, an old great Power in Eastern Europe, it has seen many wars, and many nations have tried to take it, but none has succeeded. For Poland is not ruled by a few, but by many, it has near 200,000 nobles who rule their own domains with an iron hand. Will someone be able to unite this quarrelsome people in a centralised government?

Military: Although better than Russia's, the Commonwealth's military is by no means impressive.

Land Power: 60,000

Naval Power: 70 ships.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Image

The Ottoman Empire:

Status: Great Power, Protector of the Sunni faith.

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Ruler: Sultan Köprülü, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6pr% ... tafa_Pasha

Economy: Wealthy

Population: Large

Overview: A constant enemy of Christianity since the medieval times. The Ottoman Empire looms over Europe in the east, although not as technologically advanced... It's armies are massive in size. Currently in war with several nations, including Austria, in the Great Turkish War. Will Christianity fail to hold back Allah?

Military: It's military technology is on a level a little above Russia's.

Land Power: 250,000

Naval Power: 200

Sweden, Stockholm. The seventh of July 1688

Karl looked out from the window of his office in the grand castle of Three Crowns, watching a Spanish Galleon from The New World dock, the harbour as bustling with activity. This time of the year Stockholm was as most active, besides the fifteen warships that patrolled around the city, dozens of trade ships came in every week. Most of them Dutch. Yet Karl had more important matters at hand than watching ships. He was currently togheter with his two friends, Bengt Oxenstierna and Fabian Wrede, discussing the large population growth and the demand of several cities, Stockholm especially, need of expansion. Currently it had 40,000 Citizens, a number increasing every year.

Fabian pointed on an area to the south of the city and looked up "Your Majesty, there is already a major road going here up to the capital, if we only expanded the City Walls... And built a few stone houses, maybe with two floors?

Karl replied "Three on the ones closer to the wall, we will be able to house more people that way."

Fabian nodded and rolled the map togheter. "Then I shall talk to the Mayor." he walked out after making a respectful bow with his head.

Karl turned to Bengt Oxenstierna, the Lord High Chancellor. Interesting news came from the south. Tensions between France, the Netherlands and the Holy Roman Empire, none where especially loved by Karl, was increasing. And a war was on the horizon. Aswell as in England, whom's king was a warm catholic, tensions was Rising. But here it was between the royalists and the Protestant Majority of the nation. This however concerned Karl deeply. He had no wish for a Protestant England, the Catholic influence could not by any means expand further if it was up to Karl, Sweden had sacrificed too much to allow that to happen.

"Bengt, I believe that I may hav to move quicker than I had wanted to."

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Spain, Madrid.

Ambassador Marcus Von Fersen wiped sweat of his brow when he entered the Royal Palace of Madrid, Spain was painfully warm this time of the year. And it was not made better by the extremely crowded streets.

Marcus was seeking either the Queen mother of Carlos II Mariana, who was the mentally ill kings regent. Or the Councillor John. Both those who truly was in Power in Spain, and ofcourse in conflict with eachother. For Karl it would be interesting to know what path Spain would plan on taking in the rising tensions. For Spain had lost the previous war with France, and it may not be willing for Another war, or it could be the other way around. That was what Marcus wanted to find out.

Spain, Madrid, 1688

Councillor John, the bastard son of the previous King of Spain, sat in his chambers, going over a report issued to him by a subordinate. According to the report, his growing coup against the Queen Regent was almost ready to be enacted. His men were almost in place, and he had won over some allies in the Spanish government who weren't satisfied with the regency of Queen Mariana.

It was only a matter of time now; after spending several years worming his way into power in the Palace, he would soon be able to make his final move against the Queen Regent, leaving the door open for him to assume full, unchallenged power in Spain.

John was interrupted by his musings when a servant came into the room, escorting the Ambassador of Sweden, one Marcus Von Fersen.

Councillor John rose, giving the Ambassador a charming smile. "Greetings, my lord. How are you this fine day?"

Sweden, Stockholm, the seventeenth of July 1688.

Karl XI pointed his blunt rapier at his friend Rutger Von Ascheberg, whom did the same at Karl. Both where skilled bladesmen and trained togheter almost every day. Karl began with jumping forward, trying to get a hit at Rutger's arm, yet failed and the thrust was parried, Rutger replied with making several thrusts, from the left, right, then left again. Karl parried them all. He replied by trying a thrust at Rutger's foot...

It all went very fast, Rutger struck down, pinning Karl's rapier to the floor. Then he grabbed Karl's wrist to pull him down. Karl spinned around when Rutger made the pull so that they now stood face to face. Karl grabbed Rutger's arm and kicked his legs so that Rutger lost his footing. Quick as a serpent his rapier was at Rutger's throat whom began to smile. They were both tired from having done several rounds Before this, aswell as a little bruised. Rutger started smiling, and Karl gave him a hand up and patted him on the back before leaving. Karl was not one for speaking too much, and he was heavy in thoughts.

Christian IV of Denmark was a false worm, who despite having betrothed his sister to Karl XI, had attacked Sweden in an attempt to regain Scania. Karl had managed to beat him back, yet Karl was interested in revenge. And Christian who loved sailing, was going to head out for a trip in the Baltic Sea, and with all that gunpowder on the ship something could happen during the night...

And after this horrible accident. Karl, who had a Danish Princess as a wife. Could sweep in and claim the crown for her. Which would put Sweden and Denmark in a union with his son Karl as an heir. And like that the threat of Denmark would be gone, well atleast Denmark as a state. He did not believe that the people of Denmark would easily accept this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Spain, Madrid

Marcus von Fersen smiled and nodded a greetings before he replied in excellent Spanish "I am just fine my lord, Madrid is truly alive today. I was sent to you on behalf of my sovereign King Karl XI von Wittelsbach, he has questions, and maybe ideas of Spanish and Swedish mutural interests. Do you have time to listen to them now, or do you want to listen to them later?"

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Is anyone even interested in going on with this?

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Ok let's start this up, although a great deal later than I had expected lets jut get this started, anyone who wants to can jump in aslong as their character is approved by me.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Ok, due to me being busy (and surely the rest of you), this will start after Christmas :D

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Character sheet for the Kingdom of Spain is posted! :D

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Fear of a Female planet is busy, so Magus when you submit your bio we could start lightly. After Christmas I would assume that we could really get it running.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Whenever the rest of you can, I would appreciate if you could submit your bios :)

If you are busy please give me a heads up.

Well problems with the history part should not be a problem, I could help you get on the right track.

But IRL things go first, so I wish you good luck. Hopefully you'll be able to get back to us.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

I'm afraid I will have to quit this. I just don't think I'm that good with history to play this. Plus, things are picking up in real life.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

An overview and a link to wikipedia would be great, if you character is an historical one that is.

I did it like this: roleplay/the-art-of-ruling-historical-political/characters/karl-xi-von-wittelsbach-of-sweden

And you will also be able to control diplomats etc, seeing as the leader of the nation hardly has to go himself to get things said.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Is it one character slot per nation? Do original characters get their own entries? If so, is there a template you'd prefer?

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

When everyone has created their characters we will start this up, unless everyone still isn't done for the next weekend, in that case we'll start it up then.

Aslong as it is realistic (An absolute monarchy cannot get controlled by a noble etc) you can do whatever you feel like. Aslong as they are not your enemies, you can ally them, and as for plots, well no unrealistic things like forging a few documents that says that you are really the rightful ruler of Austria etc.

This is a little after the latest edict was read in every church, and he started with creating edicts to help Catholicism in 1686. Wich means that you have a great deal of your own people against you. So I see little you can do in terms of tweaking from the start... However you might tweak a great deal after getting overthrown. Or if you play as a chancellor, you might even help William take Control an rule England alongside him, or try to get rid of him. You have plenty of options, afterwards. But sadly not so much in the beginning.

Re: The art of ruling - Historical - Political

Fear of a Female Planet wrote:Okay. So, I'm trying to figure this out... Are we revising history or are we playing along with events as they actually unfolded?

We are revising it, but at the start I wanted us to be as it was in history for example: France does not become best buddies with the Habsburgs a few Days after this.

I just wanted to get everything on the right track as it was in history, and it could change from there. In a realistic way, not like my example above. Historically realistic simply.

And Ragnarök I am sorry if I came out a little hard on you yesterday, I was quite tired and had said that we would wait in the interest check thread. And I wanted to tell you that it would be the best if William gathered support in England first. As he did in history, or got outside support. Seeing as William was not enthustiatic with outright conquering England without knowing that he had a great deal of support for doing so. I really loved the ammount of work you put into this, however I just thought that you became a Little too eager ;)
