Introduction

Welcome to the age of Queen Victoria.

The setting of our story begins in 1840 in a fictional parallel to England where the industrial revolution was replaced by an age of clockwork, coal, and steam. Etiquette is important to this era as is social image.

About the Wilkshire Family and mansion:
The Wilkshire Family is a wealthy family who currently owns a large portion of the clockwork industry. Not the entire thing mind, just a nice portion of it. They have several factories constructing parts for major clockwork constructions such as town clocks, gate systems, security systems, elevators, custom clockwork mechanics, as well as highly skilled contractors in charge of design and construction of said projects . Before the Family took up arms in clockwork The Wilkshire line was known for having its father figures serve in the Queen's Army. The strict, rough cut military style still remains in the family's hard wiring due to the father, CEO of Wilkshire Clockworks, being an ex General, discharged honorably with a badly injured leg.

The house itself is set on an outlying road outside of a beautiful little town lined with homey little family shops and restaurants. The town is small, insignificant in the face of the big cities of the UK but beautiful anyways. A little logging company set up the nearest mountain in the northwest is what keeps the money going, that and the assortment of farms scattered across the fields in the east.

The interior of the house is decorated with expensive tastes in mind. Its layout is slightly confusing with little rooms nestled in places you wouldn't expect them to be and littler service passages for servants to traverse through during parties and whatnot. Servants live on grounds in cramped little rooms scattered around the house depending on their jobs.

Thomas yawned into the back of his hand, eyes squinting and tearing up momentarily before he attempted to blink away the sleepiness and boredom he felt. It was pouring outside and his dark eyes wandered as his mother went on and on and on about the little details that where to be included in their harvest night ball. All Hallows Eve. It was to be a masquerade of course.

"With a dark twist to suit the season, it's nearing winter after all." She said. "All the proper harvest colors of course, browns and blacks and oranges and golds.

"Yes mother." Thomas murmured

"Hot cider of course, and champagne for the guests nothing morbid for the decorations I know what you kids do these days, absurd satanic rituals and things of the like. I'll not have any of that in this household." she went on. Thomas' brow only furrowed at the mention of satanic rituals. As if he'd do such a silly thing. The only absurd rituals he was likely to partake in happened between sheets. His mother went on like this for a while listing things to add to their expenses for the celebration. It was to be a very top tier event involving the rich and well known of that year.

Thomas finally got to his feet and wandered to the bookshelf as they where seated in the siting room. They had a library as well but nearly every room in that house had it's own bookshelf he plucked a random book about sailing from the shelf wondering vaguely when some sort of distraction would come wandering in offering entertainment to this dry conversation. Don't get me wrong Thomas loved his parties....he just hated the preparation phase. His father was out at work again so it was his duty as man of the house to listen to his mother's plans and take note, after all such duties would fall to him when the time came he should at least be able to count the cost. Thomas sighed and hid his relief when she finally called for tea and closed the small sailing book with one hand.

Hunter was in the kitchen prepping the tea and those little lemon cookies that Thomas and Mrs. Wilkshire were so fond of, when he heard the bell indicating that it was time for tea. He picked up the silver serve ware and walked quickly and gracefully to the sitting room. He sat the tray on the nearby table and poured Mrs. Wilkshire’s cup, adding just the smallest amount of cream and one cube of sugar, the way she liked it. He handed the saucer with the cup sitting in the center and two of the cookies on the side. “Your tea, Madame.” He smiled. “Hunter, darling, how many times must I tell you to call me Madeline when we don’t have company?”

“At least once more, Mrs. Wilkshire.” He grinned. He knew that to address the lady of the house by her first name would be highly inappropriate for the help. He then poured another cup for Thomas. His was simply black tea with three sugar cubes. He placed it on the saucer and gave him four cookies along with his tea. He walked over to Thomas and handed him the saucer. He caught a glimpse of his chocolaty brown eyes and gave him a sly smile. “Your tea, sir.” He walked back to the center of the room and bowed to Mrs. Wilkshire. “Will there be anything else?” He asked catching the devious grin on Thomas’ face at the loaded question.

“No, Hunter, that will be all.” He smiled lightly at Thomas and returned to the kitchen with the tray. He knew that look in Thomas’ eyes all too well. He was bored and looking for something to hold his interests and he knew he would be beckoned soon to help him with this. And Hunter was more than willing to oblige the young master.

Edward was asleep at his desk, as usual he had fallen asleep in the midst of working on a new clock of sorts. His room was covered in clocks that hung around the room on the walls. He was rather fond of them, he did make them all after all, perhaps he was a little too proud of his work? Although he didn't show it, perhaps putting them on display was the only way for another to notice.

Edward awoke to the stern voice of his father, not that he needed his father to wake up on his own, he was quite a punctual guy. "Edward." Was all he needed to say and he jumped where he rested, breathing in deep then exhaling out of the little surprise he had just gotten. "Shit you scared me.." He mumbled, still quite tired from a whole night with little sleep, too much of his time went into his work. "You need to eat. I'm serious. I know you take this seriously and I'm pleased you put a lot of effort into this but you're going to deteriorate if you don't rest. Day off for you today, don't even think about touching those tools, your way too ahead in the clockwork tasks I've given you, instead do something a bit more leisurely, perhaps some teaching?" Now that was something he did need to get on top of. The idea of having the day off did not fit well with him at all, he didn't not enjoy the feeling of wasting time or being lazy. Even though he wasn't, he felt like he was. "Alright." Edward agreed, he wasn't in the mood to argue anyway as he slowly sat up properly, stretching and brushing himself off. He got dressed into something less creased and dirty then left his room.

The man knew that he had been told and suggested many times to tutor Thomas Wilkshire and in a way he felt obliged to do so, he and his family were partners and all. But where should he even start? He knew hardly anything about the guy, they hadn't exactly spoken much or rather gotten the chance to. Until now. Edward had started to notice not many people around the place made much eye contact with him, he wasn't sure why. Perhaps he gave off a pissed off aura? He did always seem to have a quite stern and serious look about him, strict and straight forward. Nonetheless he paid them no mind and continuing his search until he ran into his father again he told him where he was. His father seemed happy to know he was actually doing something he said for once, yes Edward was pretty damn stubborn and argumentative.

Arriving at the sitting room just as a servant had left, he glanced at him for a moment before returning his gaze to Thomas and his mother. "Pardon the intrusion, my father is always so persistent on these things. I've been suggested to tutor your son, Mrs Wilkshire." He gave a brief nod of politeness as he stepped out of the doorway further, shortening the distance between them all. Hang on, perhaps she wasn't exactly familiar with Edward? He had been in his room most of his stay, working, although it was obvious his father would have mentioned him and what not. "I'm Edward Daviti." He continued finally, ending his sentence. Edward had such a rather calm and wise tone to him, he never seemed nervous in a conversation with anyone and public speaking was never an issue, far from shy and more confident was the best way to describe him and his posture when speaking with people.

"Yes....of course, my husband told me about the arrangement." Madeline said, matter-of-factly. "Would you like some tea? I can have Hunter fetch another cup if you'd like." She lifted the small bell that rested on a silver tray at the decorative side table set next to her.

"No, mother I think....I think I'll go show him the room we have made up for studies." Thomas cut in suddenly. He stood up putting his teacup down a little rougher than he'd intended, causing the expensive china to clink loudly. His mother flinched slightly and gave him a look of surprise. Silently scolding him with her eyes. Thomas murmured half-apologies, clearing his throat. His mother sighed and waved a delicate hand, her sweet hazel eyes rolling at her son.

"Well, since it's quite rare that you get so excited over lessons I suppose I ought to let you go, but the next time you waste perfectly good tea....I don't know what I'll do." She said, pursing her lips.

Thomas smiled and took his leave, from the room, gesturing for Edward to follow. He'd been waiting for a good excuse to leave his mother's planning session. She meant well, he knew it wanting him to be prepared to make the preparations himself someday. A man needed to learn how to manage the household when preparing for a party even if they where rich. It's the only way the wealthy can keep their fortune, by meticulously keeping track of what they do spend. This ball was going to be grand, as they always where for the household. A good portion of the massive manor would be open to the guests, all except the study and bedrooms and of course the basement levels. Thomas knew though much of those boundaries would get ignored as the rich consumed their fine champagne and spirits. Thomas' eyes where everywhere in that household and where he didn't see he pulled from the maids and waiters with a bit of sweet talk. Things like that where like the richest sweetest candy to Thomas, he knew just about all there was to know about the people who worked for his family. Except for Edward and Hunter. Well.....Hunter he'd discovered quite recently a few other talents he held besides serving, after a startling confrontation he'd had with him one evening involving the cook's counter and a bottle of gin. Thomas had been having a mid night drink and a snack when Hunter made unexpected rounds through the main house. He convinced the butler to have a drink with him and one thing lead to another very quickly. They'd almost set the house on fire inadvertently after lighting a spilt puddle of gin with the candle Hunter had used to see by walking through the house at night. It was a very eventful night and the memory of it made Thomas' ears glow and his loins stir. The counter still had a bit of a burn mark on it. Thomas had yet to see Hunter hold a more terrified expression as he had when the candle was knocked into the gin bottle, he had no doubt his own expression probably mirrored his, but it was still funny to think about.

Edward was his own puzzle, Thomas had found. He liked to spend a lot of time in two places, his study/bedroom, and the library. He was very smart and very talented with clockwork. Thomas had watched him work one evening, spying through a crack in the doorway. When he worked a crease formed between his brows and his usually serious expression held a slight tinge to it. Sort of like the look an artist gives when he gazes upon a blank piece of paper, imagining the portrait that was to be there. Thomas found it charming and very interesting to watch, he was very curious to find what other curiosities Edward held. Everyone had their secrets and it was Thomas' aim to learn them all.

"So, you're to teach me all there is to know of business and clockwork, hmm?" Thomas said, glancing over at Edward. He was taller than Thomas, quite taller. Thomas was shorter than average but he made up for it in the way he held himself, confidently and charismatically. Even when he looked up at Edward it seemed he was looking eye to eye with him. "Good luck with that, my mother was right academics seem to skim by my interest on most counts. We'll see how good you are I suppose."

As Edward listened to the lady of the house and her son speak, he raised a brow slightly out of amusement in a sense, of the way Thomas had reacted just now. It was clear he wanted to get out of spending time with his mother. Edward had completely forgotten about the grand ball that was to happen quite soon, he had been concentrating on far more important things, in his opinion they were more important anyway. Eventually his father would remind him, knowing very well what Edward was like, and another argument would occur, one saying the ball is important, the other saying it to be a waste of time. In the end he'd have to agree with his father and respectfully do as he was told, their arguments were more like, Edward trying to convince his father he was mistaken or wrong.

Aside all that, he nodded and gave a polite, short bow to Thomas' mother as he left the sitting room and followed him to this room for the studies to be held at. Edward was quite for the walk, simply thinking of where to start with the lessons and what not. He was also keen on learning more about this man and what he was like. Perhaps he should be careful what he wished for, he thought, as the male finally opened his mouth to speak and already Edward found him slightly irritating, then again he had just had little sleep, he just need to stay patient. "Indeed you shall..." He replied almost sullenly with a hint of a rather harsh tone to his voice. Edward began looking around the room he was unfamiliar with and at the tools that seemed to be provided for the lesson, how thoughtful. This made things much easier, although it would take some time for him to feel comfortable with such fresh, untouched equipment. Untouched by himself anyway. "So tell me, Thomas, how much do you know about the handling and making of clockwork?" He'd start with this and work from there, even though the guys family was practically made of clockwork business in a way, he still needed to know how much Thomas knew before he began throwing tasks at him. As he spoke, he adjusted his tie slightly and seated himself at a work bench, just for the moment as they conversed. Even though he didn't spend much time on himself, he always made sure he looked presentable, so to speak, for everyone and anyone he may encounter. He was always dressed well and professionally; at the moment he didn't have any marks or stains on his clothes but at times when he got carried away with his work and wasn't too careful or didn't change into less expensive items of clothing, they got dirtied and marked.

Edward was already suspecting this would be a bloody long day or tiring tutoring, expecting the male before him to get easily bored and not listen or pay attention, he would have to remind himself to keep his cool despite the lack of sleep and be patient with him. Perhaps giving him a little whack here or there if he didn't concentrate or do his work might be needed.

The room set up for teaching was set down the hall from the library and around the corner from where Edward usually locked himself away to do his clock working duties. It was a small room compared to the others, nothing compared to the ballroom and grand dining hall which was only ever opened for a mass amount of guests and locked any other day, however it was quite a bit more roomy than a closet. Thomas' room was twice this size. It had the necessities, a roll-in black board lined with chalk with a desk for Edward to sit at and mark his studies, and a few smaller desks for 'students' though they'd only likely need one of these. There was a large window looking down into the stable yard and a corner of the gardens. The place looked even twice as dreary peering down at the muddied paths and water-logged flowers drooping, their vibrant colors piercing bravely through the gloom.

Thomas sat front and center and crossed his legs, one elbow resting on the desk, supporting his chin as he peered up at Edward. He was wearing something typical of a day indoors on the house. His 'casual' pants fine woven slacks of a dark olive brown with his indoor shoes, plain and black and unimpressive. He had on a white shirt and a silk backed vest with a necktie to go with it. A bronze pocket watch chain trailed across his front, that which he fingered lightly, considering Edward's question. He truly was all work and no play, he noted. He 'tsk-ed' inwardly Thomas would have to correct him on that. He would learn to enjoy these teaching sessions not dread them as Thomas would. They where after all simply a game. "What anyone knows of the art. It is after all quite mysterious to the common folk don't you think? "

There it was again. Thomas attempted to set himself equal with Edward, first as a high classman now as a learned man. No doubt he'd prefer to be Edward's friend as opposed to his charge for learning. "One gear turns and the earth shall move through the will and orchestra of the finest engineer." he quoted, something that had no doubt been recited by a politician or perhaps even his own father it was hard to tell. "Very few actually know what goes on inside a clock, but every man can tell if it's working by the sound of its hearts. I bet you can tell much more by the sound of clockwork. I cannot. I'm not an engineer I'm a businessman. All I know of clock making is that it's as much art as it is mathematics and engineering. The art comes second though and it's what distinguishes fine clockwork from shoddy ones. It's why my father favors your family's work. It's art. What of you and business, my clockwork man?"

The bell rang out again as Hunter was dusting the many priceless antiquities within the grand entrance room of the manor. Like a bat, he was off in the direction of the sound he’d been trained to hear from anywhere within the manor. A few minutes later he had reached the library where Mrs. Wilkshire was still sitting. “Yes m’lady?” He asked with the Scottish part of his unique accent making itself prominent.

“I need you to go into the city and pick up these items that we’ll need for the Annual All Hallows Eve Masquerade Ball. The market should have most of what is on the list, however there are a few specialty items that will require some extra travel.” She handed Hunter a list written on an elegant stationary, a stack of envelopes, a stack of large bills to pay for everything and a set of keys. “Take the steam carriage and put those invitations in the post on your way out, if you’d be so kind.”

“As you wish, m’lady.” He smiled at her. He put the large amount of money in his back pocket and the keys into his jacket pocket. He went to the kitchen and informed Amelia, the head maid, where he was going and to keep an ear out for the bell. He went outside into the grey, rainy weather and walked out back to the stables, where the family kept the steam carriage. He opened the door of the carriage and sits down behind the wheel of the steam powered vehicle. It looked like a carriage forged from steal with a wheel where the reins would normally rest. There was an overhang from the carriage that covered the driver keeping him dry and Hunter was very grateful for this feature. He normally would have preferred the standard carriage, but this was faster and it was raining pretty bad. He pushed the key into the ignition slot and turned it to the right. The carriage stuttered to life and the sound of boiling water and grinding gears ripped through the sound of falling rain. He looked at the list that Mrs. Wilkshire had written for him. She wasn’t kidding about the extra travel, he had to go down to the winery, and to the Lewis family sheep farm on the other side of the city. “That lady loves her lamb.” He laughed to himself as he drove off to start his all-day journey.

The rain pounded at her back as she brought the livestock around. Her father sitting in the house drinking again, and she was outside in the cold working. Hannibal and James were working out in the rain too. Large men with scars from battles with animals and people alike. Those two were the farm hands, but they lived on the farm too. Octavia stopped in front of the stalls and let the stock free to walk in and graze from their respective baskets. They were to be slaughtered soon, might as well let them eat. Octavia whipped the rain from her pale face, now smeared with mud and muck from the barns and stalls. Another day's work with little help from Dad. Octavia looked over at Hannibal and smiled. "You guys should go eat something, I'll be here for now. We have shoppe to open up soon." The two men nodded and walked away. Business had been slow with other farms rising and making more product then the Granville Farm.

Today seemed like a good day to go and bother her old friend Thomas, he was always doing something fun. Pulling back her hair she called over to her horse Rusty who galloped over in a short time and hooked him to a carriage awaiting in the parking stalls."Thomas could never turn down a gift" Octavia murmured. Rusty only sighed and stomped his hooves in annoyance. "Alright Rusty, I know. Let's go see Uncle Thomas..." With the rain pelting the hood of the carriage and the hoppy and mild mead shaking in the back, Octavia set off in the direction of the Wilkshire Manor.

Edward simply sat and listened to the reply that Thomas gave him that he felt was unnecessarily long, he would not interrupt him though, and would listen until he was finished. "Thomas I'm not teaching poetry." Edward finally replied rather bluntly, acting as if he thought Thomas didn't know this already, simply a smart ass reply on Edward's behalf. "But I admire your thoughts on the art of clockwork." Edward had to learn not to be so sullen all the time, that's what happens when you rarely get any sleep at all.

As Edward spoke he made full eye contact with Thomas, there wasn't ever a time where he might not feel confident in his words, perhaps he was a little too confident. Although confident he wasn't the type to show off or boast. "Ah business, now that's something every man should learn, how to be a superb business man is very important. What is a profession without the means to make it something big, more rewarding." A rare smile formed on Edward's face, it was quite the charming smile too. Why was he smiling? Simply because he didn't have to teach clockwork for once, or at least for now. Sure, he loved his profession but sometimes you just needed a break from it, he enjoyed talking about other things. "But you already knew that, didn't you." It was almost hard for him to contain his smile, perhaps he was a little too happy about Thomas' clear interest in business. "I imagine you already know quite a bit about being a business man, after all your father is an excellent one." The man rolled up his sleeves, feeling rather humid at this point and his face returned to its serious looking self. He stood up and moved to the bookshelf, looking through various books, pulling some out and placing them on any random desk nearby, what ever book he felt worthy of reading that would help Thomas further understand business he put down. There was quite a lot of books piling up on the desk as he waited for the man to reply. Edward could multi task, it would take some preparation before he could finally start teaching Thomas.

It was late as Hunter was driving back from the winery. The cab of the carriage was filled with the supplies for the party. As he pulled into the stables he noticed the familiar site of Octavia Granville’s carriage off in the distance. He started grabbing the party supplies and taking them into the manor setting the food items on the kitchen counters for the maids to put away and the decorations he took to one of the many storage closets near the servants’ quarters. On his last two trips out to the carriage he grabbed a wooden box with about a dozen bottles of fine red wine in it and the other box in the carriage contained the same amount of champagne. The champagne wasn’t from the winery, but from a merchant in the city that had connections in France and always gave the Wilkshires a great deal as long as he received an invitation to whichever party he was supplying. One after the other he took the wines down to the wine cellar to protect their flavor until the night of the party. After he was done bringing in the supplies, he locked the carriage up and returned the keys and the remaining money to Mrs. Wilkshire.

He was about to return to the kitchen to help set up for dinner when the unique steam-powered door bell that Mr. Wilkshire had set up to be heard throughout the whole house wet off like a train whistle. He promptly answered the door to see Octavia standing in the rain. He had expected that it was her. “Good evening Ms. Granville. It is indeed a pleasure to see you again.” He smiled at her as he welcomed her into the house. He knew it would only be a matter of minutes before Mrs. Wilkshire would be there to see who was at the door. He escorted the young lady to the sitting room to await Mrs. Wilkshire.

He returned to the kitchen and got an extra place setting. He began setting the table in the smaller of the two dinning rooms with the extra place setting for their guest. He went back into the kitchen. “Dina, we got one more for dinner, hope you made enough.” He laughed. Dina always prepared enough for a small army, not just to feed the family, but the unexpected guests and the left-overs were always fed to the help the next day.
“Oh no, I might have to make a few dozen more potatoes.” she joked back at him. He finished setting the table then went to tutoring room where he assumed Thomas and Edward were still hard at work studying. He knocked on the door and it swung open as it was not shut tight and he saw Edward piling books on the desk where Thomas was sitting. “I’m sorry to interrupt you gentlemen, but dinner will be ready shortly.” He smiled at the young master as he caught his eye. He gave a polite bow and turned to return downstairs to the sitting room and inform Mrs. Wilkshire of the meal’s completion as well.

Octavia sat her soaked umbrella at the door and let Hunter lead her to the waiting room. Octavia was sure Mrs.Wilkshire would have another fit about being a lady and keeping out of the rain and mud. Octavia took of her hat and ran her fingers through her long curly dirty blonde hair. As Octavia looked about the room a figure caught her eye. How lovely this figure moved across the room, her posture straight and her smile bright. Octavia knew who this fair girl was. A loud defiant scoff made the girl turn suddenly. She smiled when she saw Octavia sitting on the large couch reclined and smirking slyly at her.

"Hey Melody," Octavia tried to say with an almost forced manly tone, only managing to choke a little from the force. Melody giggled and walked off down the hall. Octavia only sighed and lay her head back again to relax.
