a character in “The Fallen Wings”, as played by Everscale

Description

Full name: Kessenaye Deluriel
Nicknames/Aliases: Kess
Species: Elf
Gender: Male
Age: 274
Occupation: Dragon Rider Second-In-Command
Appearance: Image
Kess is a beautiful elf, old enough to be mature and young enough that he is still very, very young. He has the appearance of a twenty year old human, with pointed ears and a very fine, almost feminine face. His features are delicate and pointed, very straight, with high cheekbones and full lips that cover a set of brilliant white teeth. His hair is deepest night-black, streaming down across his shoulders and eventually ending around the spac of his waist. He has to wear it tied up to keep it out of the way, but he refuses to cut it. It is one of his last ties to his birth-culture. His skin is remarkably pale and smooth for someone who spends so much time outside – such is the skin of the elf – and it stretches smoothly out over a very fine bone structure that makes him look tall and remarkably thin, in spite of the huge muscles he has built up over the years. His fingers are long and thin, for better manipulation of both sword and reins. His eyes, cut beneath sharp, expressive black brows and curling, extremely feminine eyelashes, are a paler blue than the sky, and glitter with an almost icy gray tone. Looking at them, no one would guess that one of them does not work. He wars a high-collared shirt of deep-night blue, trimmed with gold around the collar, beneath a black jacket decorated in chains and ebony feathers. His sense of style is highly elvish in this way – graceful and decorative. Of course, he does not go out of his way to be pretty when he is in his armor. At that point beauty does not matter. He carries a twisted, almost cruel looking sword of blackish metal, with a blade darker than his own hair, set by a dark stone identical to the one in the ring he wears on one finger. This sword he calls Frostbite, for good reason.

Personality: Since he was a boy, Kess has always been a rather gentle and intelligent young man. He preferred sitting in his room with a good book to romping around in the woods with the other boys, and so created for himself a position as a social outcast within his village. He did not mind very much – he simply stuck to his position as an intellectual warrior, rather than a pure fighting machine. He is remarkably calm, capable of dealing quickly and easily with many situations, but he is also very opinionated and not afraid to speak up and put his point across. Some things he will debate for days on end, others he will simply let slide. It depends upon his perceived importance of the situation. He is a highly responsible young man (well, young for an elf), always taking his duties seriously and making sure that they are completed with a great deal of time to spare. He loves to teach and to learn, and so he has never hesitated to accept the duty of instructing young Dragon Riders. He is not a highly ambitious person, perfectly comfortable to remain at the rank he has gained. He did not even desire that rank, he would have been happy remaining a normal Dragon Rider for the rest of his life. Now, he is happy to remain the second-in-command for the rest of his life. He is fiercely loyal, almost to the point of having a sort of servant complex, not just wanting to do what he is told, but having to. He would protect almost anyone with his life, from his dearest friend to an completely innocent stranger. In spite of all this, or perhaps because of it, he has always had a bit of a temper when it comes to dangerous things. When a young Dragon Rider puts their friends in danger, it is Kess who challenges them. And when he does, he is furious. Anyone touching or harming his friends, in any way, is something entirely unacceptable, and payment will be extracted for it – be it in money, blood, or life.

Strengths:
• Compassion – he is highly capable of understanding and feeling with a person or a situation. It makes him a strong leader, and someone to look up to.
• Knowledge – a book-lover, he is learned in several languages and many histories and sciences. Learning knew things is a hobby of his, and one of his favorite things to do, right alongside riding his dragon.
• Strength – physically, Kess is a very strong person. It probably has something to do with swinging the massive longsword Frostbite around.
• Training – all his life, for more than two hundred years, Kess has been trained in the art of combat. Though Frostbite is a relatively new addition, he has only had her for one hundred and fifteen years, he knows how to wield her like a master.
• Loyalty – he seems entirely incapable of betraying another’s trust. It is as though he is afraid of angering those of higher rank than him, even though more often than not those higher-ups consider him a friend. This is, perhaps, why he has reached the rank he has reached. Everyone trusts him.
• Honor – there are certain things – killing women and children, burning down villages, betraying a friend – that Kess simply will not do, for the sake of his own honor. This has made him a very trustworthy and respected person.

Weaknesses:
• Compassion – he is highly capable of understanding and feeling with a person or a situation. He always gives people the benefit of the doubt, and that has gotten him hurt several times before.
• Loyalty – he seems entirely incapable of betraying another’s trust. It is as though he is afraid of angering those of higher rank than him, even though more often than not those higher-ups consider him a friend. His loyalty is never-ending, and unbreakable, and someday that might get him killed.
• Honor – there are certain things – killing women and children, burning down villages, betraying a friend – that Kess simply will not do, for the sake of his own honor. It can be a problem when sneaking around and trying not to get killed.
• Temper – when a friend is hurt or when someone does something that is really and truly wrong, it tends to annoy the hell out of Kess. He has been known to let his fist swing at someone who was unduly cruel.
• Blindness – perhaps his greatest physical weakness, his left eye is entirely blind. Though it remains naturally colored, he can not see a thing through it – it is as though it simply is not there. Naturally, as a result, he has a gaping blind spot on his left side. There is a reason he does not often tell new people that he is half blind.
• Fear – though a strong man, Kess is afraid of many things. Among them, drowning (and, by extension, swimming at all), falling, the undead, snakes, and, most inexplicably, heights. He does not have a problem with heights, as long as he is on the back of his dragon, but as soon as he is standing on the edge of a cliff he becomes faint. He has almost fallen off on multiple occasions.
• Protectiveness – though this can also be considered a strength, it is also a problem for Kess. He has been known to throw himself in front of a sword to save a complete stranger.

Equipment:
• Frostbite – a twisted black double-blade imbued with a minor form of ice magic. It quite literally “frosts” what it “bites”, freezing whatever flesh it touches – which hurts. A lot. This can be an advantage in battle. It also makes cleaning the blade incredibly difficult, and can be a problem if Kess’s hand slips while he’s holding it, or if he’s trying to handle it without gloves. The weapons is even more dangerous for him than it would be, because it has two blades, with the handle in the middle. He can’t afford to slip in any direction.
• The Ring of Deluriel – as the last descendent of his once-esteemed family, he carries his family’s blackstone ring, the symbol of their high rank and prestige, and of his own honor.

Abilities: He is an accomplished swordsman, and learned in four languages of the land – common, elvish, dwarvish, and draconic. He is still studying his orcish, and only because he likes to learn does he enjoy studying it. It is a rough and unpleasant language… He has a very close bond with his dragon, and is a wonderful flier. He has never had much skill with magic, however – he prefers the blade.

Brief history: More than two hundred years ago, Kess was born into the high-class Deluriel family. They ruled over an elven province with honor, and gained respect and love from their subjects through fair treatment and generosity, rather than fear. These basic ideals were instilled in Kessenaye from a very young age, and he lives with them to this day.
When he was still a boy (at least by eleven standards), his family went to war against another family. The Deluriel lost – Kess is now all that is left of them. He fled from his family’s killers and found himself alone in the wilderness. He wandered, learned to survive with the vicious Frostbite which, alongside the ring, was all he had left of his family. Eventually, he stumbled across the Dragon Riders. He found his home.
Since that day, Kess has never thought once of leaving the Dragon Riders in search of other remnants of his family, or to seek revenge. His father taught him that revenge is never the path to take, and leads only to destruction. He has chosen, instead, to fight hard for this new family – and for his beloved dragon. He has become comfortable among the ranks of the Dragon Riders, so much so that he has chosen to erase the pain of his past. He still wields Frostbite and wears his ring, but he never tells anyone of his past. Only those who knew him as a child – of which there are very few, as he is over two centuries old – know where he came from and why. Over time he has risen through skill and hard works into the upper ranks of the Dragon Riders, becoming their second-in-command, the loyal servant and friend of their Commander. He never wanted it, he simply earned it, and now he takes every duty as seriously as all the others.

Dragon Name: Kethrellan (Kestrel)

Dragon Appearance: Image
Kestrel is a beautiful dragon, still young, as is her Rider. Her scales glitter the darkish blue of a deep lake, fading into a pale violet underbelly with similarly violet spines across her back. A pair of horns, such a pale blue that they are nearly white, lie back at the back of her head. She spans to nearly thirty feet in length, a large and very mature dragon, with hawk-like yellow eyes that earned her nickname. Her wings and feet are viciously clawed, and her teeth are almost as dangerous, though she prefers to use her mouth for eating rather than for killing. She is relatively long and slender, and her great wingspan tents at nearly two times the length of her body. Such are the wings needed to lift such a magnificent creature.

Dragon Personality: At first, Kestrel is a spiteful, vicious little dragon, proud and easily offended. She is unpredictable and erratic, and you have to be very careful what you say to her, because she is about as likely to bite your head off as she is to ignore you or tuck you snuggly into bed. She is spiny and sharp-tongued with eyes that are remarkably effective at glaring.
Once you get to know her, however, as Kess has done, Kestrel becomes a very sweet and affectionate dragon. In private, at least. She loves her Rider dearly, and would protect him with everything she has, including her life. She still takes a snap at his long hair once in a while, but her control is such that she has never once come close to slipping and hurting him. She is mischievous and vengeful and has been known to take his feet out from under him with her tail, but she always helps him back to his feet afterwards. The pair clearly love each other, truly and deeply, even though they bicker like an old married couple. Their bond runs so deeply that Kess actually prefers sleeping in her nest with her to sleeping in his warm, soft bed. Who knows what would happen of Kestrel were to die?

Breath: Fire. Very, very hot fire. Literally white-hot. It burns orange once it catches on something, but when she first breathes it, it is purest blue-white.

So begins...
