Relos Zaiphar

”I had judged you off of the emperor's daughters and that was wrong of me, seeing as you're not from here. So…I apologize for that; and I apologize that Shigan is not what it should be. I promise you, there are good people around here...”

Lilla’s apology caused Relos to cock his head in question, still smiling in good humor. It seems that by offering her a compliment, her response was to apologise to him…an odd response, to be sure. And upon thinking about he, he decided that he would rather just be complimented in return. He said as much to her, after she had finished, and went on to say, “…and there’s no reason to apologise to me, anyway, Lilla. Apologies are only for those who have done something wrong; although I do feel like basing your mental image of me off of a lady is borderline evil…I’m the manliest man in all of Zaiphar, or Shigan (for that matter), after all.”

"Well, Relos... If that were ever to be, I'd love to go, but as it is, I'm not even certain how I would get so far from home or if I'd find it in me to leave and come back. I've lived in Shigan all my life... I haven't even been out of Bell's Wish more than once, and even then I was a little girl."

Relos tsked, mock frowning and shaking his head at Lilla. “Well, that’s all the more reason to go. A person can’t like their whole lives in once place; traveling isn’t just about seeing different places, it’s about spreading your horizons, seeing more of what’s out there…” Here he paused, placing a fist under his chin as he started to think.

“I mean, just look at me; I’ve visited most of the countries that are easily accessible at least once. There are still many places I haven’t been, but the places I have been have still added to my view on things. It’s one thing to know about the land you live in, but another to have travelled it.”

“And besides, traveling’s fun,” he ended with a laugh.

"Bell's Wish... I'm certain you haven't met all of the emperor's daughters. His eldest daughter is a few years my senior, I believe, and as the story goes, when Shigan was founded, the first emperor had a baby girl shortly after he conquered this place. He named it after her, and it seems it's been a trend for the kings succeeding him to name their first daughter 'Bell.'"

Relos listened to Lilla’s story quietly, genuinely interested in learning something else about the strange place that he was currently in, and the information about the princess was intriguing as well. Come to think of it, Relos didn’t know much at all about the Emperor’s daughters. He didn’t know their individual characteristics at all, not having been schooled on them beforehand like he probably should have been. An oversight, on his part.

So, one of them was Bell, and she was a few years older than Lilla. Relos was only a little older than Lilla himself, so if she was more than a few years older than her, that meant that she was probably older than him, too.

And how does she act? How do any of them act? Were they all the spoiled princesses that he envisioned, and that Lilla hinted, they would be? He dearly hoped not; he’d come to Shigan with low expectations to be pleasantly surprised by Lilla, and it would be quite a shame to then have the girls that he would likely be marrying be horrible.

Well, he wouldn’t have to wait for long. The emperor would probably not waste the opportunity to introduce his daughters to Relos, so there was a good chance that he would meet most, if not all, of them at the lunch meeting later that day. With that realization, the upcoming event began to loom heavier and heavier in Relos’ mind. Such an important event so early in the route…

The idea behind the town, however, made Relos smile. Shigan and Zaiphar weren’t totally different after all: naming a town after a family member is something that had been done in Zaiphar as well. When Port Cirshë was damaged in a storm and repaired, it was renamed Port Mylene, after Seles’s mother. Relos could distinctly remember what a special place that harbor town became for him, and he had to wonder if this town of Bell’s Wish still held a place in the emperor’s, or his daughter’s, heart. Somehow he doubted it, but still; it was nice to imagine that it did.

As Lilla finished talking, the wind picked up a bit, causing both of them to grasp at things to keep them from blowing away. For Lilla, it was her dress; For Relos, it was his hair, which caught the wind in such a perfect manner as to fly all around his face and loosed the headband that he’d tied around his head. After the wind died down, he brushed the hair out of his face and tied the headband back into place, clucking his tongue at the wind as if the forces of nature truly cared about any annoyance he had.

"If you don't mind... I'd like to go back inside. I've still got some more things to unpack. I'd hate to waste such a beautiful day on such tasks, but I know if I don't do it promptly it won't get done...”

Relos stood as well, brushing his pants off to rid it of any grass that was clinging to it, and nodded. He could understand that, and if the castle servants had not already unpacked the majority of his belongings and distributed them about the room, unpacking was most likely what he would be doing now as well. (Although, he would still probably take some time to reorganize his things in his own way, when he got the time).

He offered to help her with her unpacking, or at the very least walk with her back to their room, “if you’d rather me not touch any of your things, for fear I would contaminate them.” They started to walk back to palace. As they did, Lilla brought up another seemingly random topic.

”Have you ever seen snow, Relos?”

“Snow?” he asked, his mind instantly recalling the scant encounters he’d had with the material. “Well, there certainly isn’t any snow in Zaiphar, even during the winter. However, I’ve had the luck of traveling to where there is some, so I’ve seen it a few times.”

Relos stopped walking for a moment then, tapping his chin as he thought of something. Apparently deciding upon it, he told Lilla to wait there and then ran off towards the maid who had taken their dishes away. When he caught up with her, he took the cup that he had drunken from, and then walked over to the small river that wound through a part of the garden and filled the empty cup up with water. He then returned to Lilla, and held the cup out for her to see.

Water, turn’dst / seven sigh of cloud and wish of mortal change you / from liquid blood of earth / to mettle of icest temp’est”

Upon completion of the spell, the silvery light of Relos’ magic flared around the hand that was grasping the cup, and seeped into the liquid inside. As the water changed, it expanded, overflowing the cup just slightly when it finished. Relos then reached out and took Lilla’s hand by the wrist, and turned it so that her palm was facing upwards. He dumped half of the cup’s contents out onto her hand, filling her palm with white powdery snow.

It was unlike normal snow, which could be thick and icy. It was more like the imaginary snow that people think of when they try to picture snow in their minds if they haven’t seen the real kind enough. It was lighter than even the lightest natural snow, so fine that it sat like a feather in her hand. Each of the glittery, individual crystals was a clear-white, not dirtied from anything as it was made of pure water.

Relos grinned and stepped back, letting her hand go and allowing her to inspect the snow herself. As he waited for her reaction, he raised the cup and poured some of the snow into his mouth, where it melted into icy water.

Lilla Rowan

“Well, that’s all the more reason to go. A person can’t like their whole lives in once place; traveling isn’t just about seeing different places, it’s about spreading your horizons, seeing more of what’s out there…”

"Don't you ever worry... that... by leaving where you live, there's a possibility there could be some place better?" Lilla wondered, her hands still clasped behind her back he stood, brushing himself off as well. "Maybe it's just from growing up in Shigan... but, sometimes, I do want to leave and see other places. But I know if I come home, it won't be the same. Once you've lived as you have for so long, seeing something better is like having it bad... and realizing something good was just out of your reach. Would you be able to go back to living as you were? Sure, Shigan is... mediocre, but it's home. It's all I know."

She glanced at him again, a smile forming on her face as the wind whipped his hair. The sun caught the strands, and for the brief moment the wind carried the curly strands, it reminded her of a wildfire. The moment it stalled and she noticed the pouting, annoyed expression on his face, Lilla had to look away to avoid laughter. He caught up to her as they walked, their steps slow and leisurely, but unlike before, she stood at his side and not lagging a few steps behind. Their shoulders brushed occasionally, but she made sure to keep her hands clasp behind her back so she wouldn't have too much unneeded contact with the prince.

"Well," she said, smiling slightly. Another breeze wafted through the corridor, the large archways and stained glass windows casting colored patterns on the floor and on themselves, "if you feel so obligated... you can help me unpack. The company would be nice." Lilla pushed hair from her face. She paused, realizing too late after she'd spoken that she still had his sleeping shirt on her nightstand - but retracting her statement would be suspicious. She drew her lower lip between her teeth, deciding to change the topic in hopes he wouldn't notice her hesitation.

"Well, there certainly isn’t any snow in Zaiphar, even during the winter. However, I’ve had the luck of traveling to where there is some, so I’ve seen it a few times.”

A smile spread onto her face, large and amused, and she turned to face him, stopping in her tracks. She had known Zaiphar would not be the type of place to have snow - but, having come from a region where snowstorms were frequent and the cold was combated with thick, feathery down blankets, she couldn't imagine only seeing snow. She opened her mouth to speak, and just as she had, he did as well.

"Wait right here -"

He turned, taking off down the hallway they had been in, and for several seconds the only noises were Relos's heavy footfalls and her soft laughter. He had been here a mere day and had experienced a thunder storm worthy of Shigan... she wondered if he would stay long enough to see a snow storm. They seemed to follow him, but she didn't take it as a bad omen. She couldn't count how many times she would be out and about or running an errand for the Lady, just another humid summer day, and the skies would suddenly become gray and release all it's pent up emotions.

Relos seemed to be just as spontaneous as the thunderstorm that had followed him. She didn't mind either one.

She could hear his shoes as he returned, slower this time, glancing up at him. He carried a glass of water, and until he stopped in front of her and began to recite a spell foreign to her, she hadn't been exactly sure why he had decided to go back to the gardens to get one... when they were already inside the palace once more. She watched as his hand flashed, the water in the glass beginning to crystallize just as the glass fogged, his hand warmer than the substance inside, and as it began to freeze, it expanded. The only thing she could compare it to was alcohol, the froth at the top that always seemed to overflow no matter how precariously she tried to carry it.

She felt his calloused palm around her wrist, and if she hadn't already been mesmerized by the magic that was transforming the water in front of her, she might have flinched in surprise. For a moment, she was uncertain what was contained in the cup. It wasn't until he pulled her hand out in front of the two of them, allowing some of the glittering powder to fall onto her palm, that she realized it was snow.

Lilla didn't feel his grip on her wrist subside or notice the grin on his face, her own growing as she examined the snow in her hand. It was slowly melting, droplets falling near her feet. She glanced up, childish wonder obvious on her features.

"Oh, Relos-" She took a step back from him, the grin still on her face, glancing between the slushy snow in her hand and the man beside her. She knew he was a Vyx - but she couldn't grasp the full reign of his abilities, not being one herself. This was one of the last things she would have thought he could do. "This, just... I didn't even know you could do such a thing."

For a moment, she watched the snow melt, the giddiness she'd just expressed beginning to fade. She couldn't soil her dress with the water - even if it would dry later, but she was in his company and could be for a while longer - and she wasn't going to shake it off onto the ground while the maids were lurking. Before all the snow could condense and drip to the ground, she made a fist, suddenly flicking her fingers at him and allowing the water droplets to fly off her palm and her fingertips, onto his cheek and neck.

Lilla laughed, sudden and high-pitched, and before he could return the favor with the bit of snow he had left in his glass, she took off down the hallway. She had made it a decent distance before she fell out of her shoe, and, torn between leaving it behind and putting it back on, she hastily kicked the other off, bent over and picked them both up, before running again. It had been a long time since she had gone anywhere barefooted, she realized, and when she reached the doors of their room she paused to catch her breath and halt her laughter. The servants were staring, and she had seen something reminiscent of one of the princesses as she ran through the halls, but she paid neither mind as she tossed her shoes down and stepped into them, waiting for Relos to catch up with a smile on her face.

Relos Zaiphar

"Don't you ever worry... that... by leaving where you live, there's a possibility there could be some place better…Would you be able to go back to living as you were? Sure, Shigan is... mediocre, but it's home. It's all I know."

Relos ducked his chin down as her words hit him, as he heard the mixture of sadness and appreciation in her voice for her home country. Sure, he could understand where she was coming from. He didn’t feel the same way, though; to him, Zaiphar was perfection, no place could ever compare to it. But to not live in Zaiphar, to live somewhere where you know the place isn’t good…he doubted that he could sit quietly with those feelings. He doubted that he could hold himself back from leaving anyway.

He simply nodded to Lilla, not saying anything back. He understood, and that was enough; there was nothing he could really say that would help her.

When she agreed to let him help her unpack, he gave her a small smile, recognizing the small invitation to get closer to her. He didn’t have much time to talk about it, however, for she then asked him an odd question, about snow of all things…

Acting on his impulse, he went out of his way to return to her, now with a cup of water, and turned the water to snow. After pouring some of it in her hand, he stepped back and watched her as she reacted to it.

”Oh Relos…This, just.. I didn't even know you could do such a thing.”

At this, Relos had to turn his head to the side and scratch the side of his head. He wasn’t the embarrassed type, but even he couldn’t help but almost blush from her words. “It’s not like it’s that big a deal, Lilla. Elemental manipulation is a pretty common skill, of middling difficulty. My teacher could pull water out of the air and turn it to ice, then light that ice on fire. Just turning water to snow isn’t anything special…”

He watched her examine the snow for another moment, also noting that it was already turning to water. It was decently warm out, so it was really no surprise that the fine, fine snow was already liquefying. What was a surprise, though, was what happened next.

Before he knew it, Lilla had moved her hand, forming a fist, and flicked out her fingers, sending the melting snow that had been in her hands straight forward. Directly at…him.

As the icy globules hit his face and neck, Relos jumped; the sudden freezing, slushy impact shaking him for the split second that it took Lilla to start running, laughing all the way. Still dazed and not comprehending what had happened, Relos could only stare after her.

Shaking himself and wiping the slush off, Relos glowered at the corridor that Lilla had disappeared down. “Oh, so she wants to play that game, hmm? Well, that’s fine by me!” Shaking himself one more time, he bolted down the hallway after her, not running perhaps as fast as he could, for he was still carrying the cup and didn’t want to spill the remainder of the liquid.

Although he was grinning evilly as he chased her, he couldn’t help but laugh at the situation in his head. Surely it wasn’t every day that a girl threw snow at someone, especially not the person that said lady was assigned to carry around. Surely that wasn’t an “appropriate” action.

But it was hella-funny.

Even though they passed many people through the halls, Relos nor Lilla paid them any mind. The prince and his lady cared not for the opinions of the palace dwellers. Lilla finally started to slow as they neared their shared room, and Relos stopped when she did, catching up to her but just a moment after thanks to his slightly faster running speed.

Upon catching up to her, Relos stopped for a moment to catch his breat, but then reached forward to take Lilla by the shoulder and turn her around to face him.

“Tha-that wasn’t nice at all, Miss Lilla. You don’t just throw stuff at someone and bolt…only those who are prepared to be shot at should shoot…”

That said, Relos promptly took the cup that he still held and slung its contents directly at her face, splashing her directly with the icy slush.

…and the world froze for a moment….

Lilla Rowan

She'd stopped, but she heard his footfalls and within moments his hand was on her shoulder, turning her around to face him directly. For a few moments, her face fell in fear, because she knew what she had done, and it wasn't exactly Fleure material. It wasn't lady-like, period, and as her lips parted in preparation for an apology and her eyes redirected to his own, he began to speak.

“Tha-that wasn’t nice at all, Miss Lilla." Uh-oh. She was in trouble. Lilla knew there was a glimmer of a chance that he could go tell the king, as it would obviously reflect badly on Shigan and how it allows it's women to act. She wasn't sure what she would be more ashamed of; giving Zaiphar a trump card just because she had flicked water on their prince, or shaming Shigan for something more sinister. But then again, she rationalized, putting her hands up, palms facing him in a sign of defeat, she had saved him from the king's wrath earlier, so perhaps he would not take such an over the top response to the water...

And then she noticed that devilish grin, that malicious, wicked smile. No, no, no. "You don’t just throw stuff at someone and bolt…only those who are prepared to be shot at should shoot…” His hand jerked, and before she could react, the icy water splashed onto her face and her neck, causing her to gasp and blink water from her eyes. For a few moments she just stood there, her mouth open, torn between being simply slack-jawed and an expression of disbelief. The water droplets slowly slid down her face and her neck, sending a shiver down her spine, and even as her hair dripped onto her dress she couldn't do anything but stare. Finally she found her voice, stomping her foot indignantly and making fists at her sides.

"I can't believe you did that!" Her tone was astonished, shaking her head. With an exasperated, amused smile, she prodded his chest with one of her fingers. "I don't know what I'm going to do with you...." Lilla added, punctuating it with an exaggerated sigh, before reaching around him to open his door and giving him a light push in it's direction. "I need to change, seeing as I've got freezing water down my dress now. I'll let you come help in a minute or two." With that she went into her own room, shutting the door.

As unexpected as his action had been, Lilla couldn't say she was the least bit surprised. She had deserved it - perhaps in not as much quantity as he had returned it, she noted as she stepped further into her room and took her dress off. If the water had been any bit warmer, she could have dabbed at it and left it to dry, but it was not. She shivered at the dampness on her skin, feeling bumps beginning to rise on her arms, and even though the attack had only happened a few minutes ago she couldn't help but recall it with a grin. He's such a child.

Lilla pulled on a plain, sleeveless shirt and a floral skirt, checking around her room to make sure she had everything unpacked and in it's place that could be the least bit embarrassing, before picking her wet dress from the floor and putting it into one of her unpacked bags. She wasn't certain who did the laundry or when exactly... but they had messed with her items enough. She could wash her own things. Kicking the bag under her bed with a soft sigh, she strode over to the door connecting their rooms and opened it, leaning in the door way.

"Alright, Relos..." She mused, taking a last glance in her room and suddenly spying the gray shirt. She turned back into her quarters, picking it up and quickly pulling open one of her dresser drawers, stuffing it into the very back and shutting it. "I don't really have much to put away... I just have to fold them and find a proper place to put them..." She was rambling for her own sake, picking up one of her unempied bags and putting it onto her bed. "If you want, you can just keep me company, unless you really want to help."

The majority of her items were casual, but she also had packed a few...fancier items that she had borrowed from the twins and Darcy. Lilla hadn't been sure what she would be doing or what would be expected of her, and as she had packed to get here, the Lady had given her a passing tip: "It is better to be overdressed than under dressed, Lilla." She'd been just about to head out and rushed to get something a little dressier. As she pulled the clothes from her bag, she folded them carefully, lamenting the fact that without being washed, there would be no way to completely get the wrinkles out.

"Did you get unpacked, Relos?" She asked, sparing a glance in his direction.

Relos Zaiphar

"I can't believe you did that!"

Relos could only attempt to hid his grin at Lilla’s obvious distress. The combination of her utterly shocked (and wet) face and exasperated tone left him reeling with silent laughter. He held it in for courtesy’s sake, and so that she didn’t strike out at him for finding the situation humorous (which it truly, truly was). Yet, Relos is not one who is experienced in holding laughter in, as there is nothing normally stopping him from doing so. Therefore, it was still fairly obvious how the prince felt about the scene before him, what with the twitching corners of his mouth as he tried to hold a straight face and the slight rocking of his shoulders as his chest vibrated with contained mirth.

She started prodding his chest, putting him down as if he was a misbehaving puppy or mischievous child; yet, humor had crept into her voice as well, and it eased any sharpness it would have had otherwise. Relos didn’t say anything, not trusting himself too, simply arching one eyebrow at her as if to say ‘and, you’re surprised because?..’

"I don't know what I'm going to do with you," she said finally, with another sigh, and gave reprimanding him up as a lost cause. She went behind him then, and started pushing him into the room. He complied, moving along with her, but not before he considered planting himself there and having Lilla struggle to move him, as if he was an immobile boulder. Still, he couldn’t be too cruel to her, so he decided against it.

They entered the room, but Lilla didn’t stop, heading for her adjoining one. She turned back to him and said, still with the same mixture of sentiments as outside, "I need to change, seeing as I've got freezing water down my dress now. I'll let you come help in a minute or two."

Oh, snarky, he thought with a laugh as she disappeared behind her door. She’d let him come in, would she? Wisely deciding to remain holding his tongue, Relos just sat down on his bed, letting his back fall down onto the supporting softness.

If only his entire stay in Shigan could be as pleasant as this: not too much to worry about, someone to keep him company and amuse him, decent weather. Sadly, he knew that wasn’t the case. The start of the difficulties lay directly ahead of him, hidden within the lunch meeting with the emperor. Sooner or later, Lilla would either prove to be a friend of another hurdle to jump over. And it would most likely rain again during his stay.

For now, though: things are okay, he thought with another glance at Lilla’s door. He had to take it as it came, and if he had any feel for the emperor’s plans, it was going to come gradually, borderline slowly.

“Bah, I’m being all doomy and gloomy over just the thought of lunch with him…the emperor sure knows how to build suspense…”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

After a few moments, the door to Lilla’s room opened and she appeared again, beckoning him inside. Upon seeing her, he shook his head a bit to clear the sudden heavy thoughts, and focused once again on her. Smiling a bit, he got up from the bed and over to her.

After she shook her head at his antics a bit, she turned her attention back to the room and took stock of what needed to be done. "I don't really have much to put away...I just have to fold them and find a proper place to put them..."

He nodded, and leaned against her bedpost, trying to stand out of her way. He assisted when she called on him, moving empty cases out of the way, placing clothing in places that he was closer to than she was; but otherwise, he leaned in his spot and chatted with her, much as they had been all morning. That was the easiest thing to do with Lilla, Relos mused. She was the kind of person that you could simply talk to; you start on one thing, and naturally move onto another until you’ve talked a little about everything you could think of. And yet, it never got boring.

He was glad for the chance to talk freely this morning, for he knew that in just a short while, he would finally be put face to face with the emperor, and perhaps even the princesses. He knew that then, freely was the least manner in which he would be talking. He would have to be as guarded and precise as a military strategist, thinking over every word, weighing the impact of the things he wanted to say versus the things he should say.

At least he could get that out of his system now, with Lilla’s help.

Lilla Rowan

She could tell by the look on his face, the draw of his eyebrows and the thin line of his lips, that he was examining the inevitable. At one point, as she looked out of the corner of her eye, she could see the way he stood against one of the tall posts of her bed with his arms crossed and his gaze adverted elsewhere. Lilla knew he wasn't afraid; or, she assumed he wasn't. Brooding? Worried, maybe? Honestly, she couldn't tell, but even knowing she was meant to be on Shigan's side, she couldn't help but feel a little bad for him.

She wasn't ignorant to the aspect that this was the most important thing he'd done - he'd said so himself - and, as far as she was concerned, it was probably one of the few, if not only, negotiations he'd ever done by himself. And treaties rarely went without some kind of arrangement or wedding proposal for the public to know they were earnest in their proclamations - as if weddings truly proved they both were on good terms.

And here she was, having to be another obstacle, another way to make him fail and provoke war. She paused, her dresser drawer open, a shirt in hand.

"I'm going to cause this war, aren't I..." Lilla murmured. No, she didn't want this. She didn't want to bring something so deadly to her country, to possibly be the cause of something so horrid on both fronts.

How could she live with herself if it was her doings, her words, that caused her king to declare war? How could she live with being in such close quarters with Relos after the king would decide his actions were disgusting and wrong, and see that same expression on his face that was on it right now?

She put her shirt away and closed her dresser drawer, before openly staring at the man in her room. His gaze to the floor, his nails digging into his forearms, something foreign swirling in his eyes and a deep breath expanding his chest. It took him several seconds for him to notice her silence and her stillness, but by then she had already come to a conclusion - and the quirky, half-true smile that lit up his face when he noticed her appraising him didn't change her resolve.

Lilla wasn't care if not causing war would make the king strip her of her pay, but she wasn't going to allow herself to become any more of a pawn in this game. She wasn't going to let Relos have to stew about his implications just as she was.

She couldn't, and no one was going to be any the wiser of her decision. She'd let Relos and the King go on believing she was actively pursuing her goal and trying to make the prince take a wrong step... but no matter what was to happen, she wasn't going to allow war to envelop both of their countries.

Before he could really speak, that quirky grin still on his face, a servant appeared in the doorway connecting their two rooms. She spoke quickly and articulately.

"Prince Relos, the king awaits you in the garden."

His expression hardened and she saw his knuckles turn white, his smile faltering for just a moment. Like that, the servant exited through Relos's room, and he pushed off of her bedpost to follow her out.

"Wait, Relos."

Lilla took a few steps toward and, with a beat of hesitation, put a hand on his forearm and stood up on the edges of her toes. She brushed her lips against his cheek before resettling on the floor.

"Good luck. I'll be here when you get back."

The gesture was merely meant to be a departing one, much like what he had done last night, but she had a feeling that - like his - it would be taken for more than it's worth. With a bit of a smile in his direction, he left, and for the first time in two days she was left wondering what she could do, and with a soft sigh she sat down onto her bed.

The Lunch Meeting

Relos Zaiphar

"Prince Relos, the king awaits you in the garden."

Relos’ grin faltered for a split second; he was surprised by the sudden entrance of the palace official. Upon hearing the words, Relos simply nodded to himself. He’d been thinking more and more about the meeting today the closer and closer it came to time; now, he was prepared, or at least, as mentally prepared as he could be. Although dreading the event had been unpleasant, it had lessened the shock when it finally came time.

As the official left, his job done, Relos moved from Lilla’s bedside. He spared a half-glance at the girl, wondering what he should say to her. Should he thank her for the company this morning? Perhaps tell her that he’d see her later? Or maybe…he shouldn’t say anything at all. She knew where he was going; what was to happen. And, unless she knew that the emperor was more bloodthirsty than Relos gave him credit for, she knew that he’d be back later.

So instead, he just gave her a bit of a smile, and turned to leave.

"Wait, Relos."

He stopped, and felt a sudden tug on his arm. He turned towards the touch, and found Lilla looking up at him. He was expecting words to come out of her mouth, but instead, her mouth simply got closer. He felt her lips on his cheek, and before her head was drawn back, a grin had settled on his face.

So, she was taking to the Zaipharian traditions now, was she? He doubted that she fully understood the reasoning behind the parting kiss, but the fact that she was trying to replicate his actions was touching. It was also rather pleasing that she was kissed him, even if it was on the cheek.

"Good luck. I'll be here when you get back."

He gave her a lopsided grin, silently thanking her, and then turned to look out the door of their room. He raised a hand a patted her head gently; then, with a weary voice that was laced with humor, he said, “I won’t need luck, if things go well. But thank you. I’ll see you when I get back; try not to be too bored without me.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Relos sat at one end of the table, which sat under a gazebo of sorts. The structure was located towards the backside of the gardens, far deeper in than Lilla and he had gone early, and the area around it was obviously treated with more precise care. This was the section of the palace gardens that was truly ‘royal’; he had heard from one of the servants that no one was allowed in this part of the grounds except the royal family and the few servants chosen to care for the grounds.

He had to admit, from his spot, the area certainly looked nice. Everything was of a higher quality, and painstakingly cared for (he knew in the back of his mind that a few poor saps probably owed their livelihood this care). Everything was fresh with spring, bright green and vibrant colors. If his only task out here was to appreciate the scenery, then he could even be happy doing so.

Sadly, that was not the case. He reaffixed his gaze to the emperor, having only deviated from it for a few moments to inspect the surroundings. So far, nothing had been said. Relos had been shown to his seat under the gazebo by one of the few servants who stood around the premises, waiting to serve. Once he’d been seated, he had expected the emperor to start talking, but instead, he had simply intertwined his fingers and directed his gaze to the prince. He had barely moved, and had not uttered a word; his gaze was still firmly meshed with Relos’.

Relos had not spoken either, as he was unsure if that was a smart move or not. There could be any number of reasons for the emperor’s silence, and if one of those was a valid reason, then breaking it would be cause for offense. And, looking as he was at the cast of emperor’s features, Relos couldn’t help but feel as though he wanted Relos to speak. Perhaps this was nothing more than a childish game of silence, in which the first one to break it was the unquestionable looser. Something of such triviality could never be used against him, of course, and yet…Relos couldn’t stand the thought of letting the emperor win, despite how petty the game. Childish as it was, he had resolved to as silent as the other party, for however long it took.

If this day was to pass into night without a single word, then let it be so. They would most likely adjurn; with a wave of his hand, the emperor would signal one of the servants to come show him back to the palace. Perhaps they’d meet again the next day, and spend it as well in silence. Perhaps they’d spend a solid month of ‘deliberations’ in complete silence. How that would be satisfying and enjoyable! When Lilla would ask him how the talks were going, he would be able to cheerfully and honestly tell her that nothing was said of importance that day.

After staring at the emperor for a few more moments, Relos once again broke his gaze to sweep around again at the others. There were four more people seated at the table other than Relos and the emperor. They were the emperor’s daughters, of that Relos had no doubt; each of them was a beautiful woman, of varying age, resplendent in clothes that accentuated their individual beauty. Upon re-examining the table, Relos came to the conclusion that they all must make quite a sight to see for the servants down below. Each of the persons seated at the table was clothed in a different, equally vibrant colour. Relos was all pale blue and white; the emperor was regally garbed in gold and dark, dark yellows that bordered on orange-like the most elegant dandelion that ever existed; The princesses were glowing filaments of colour: green, red, yellow.

Relos was reminded of a flower arrangement that was common in the upper story windows and balconies in Zaiphar: the painted flower. In these floating gardens, people would plant bunches (sometimes a dozen, sometimes a single) of different kinds of flowers, grouped by likeness. When they bloomed, there would be little groups of differently coloured flowers, like a painter’s easel. When the wind blew hard, and the petals flew off, it would be as though stained glass had shattered and fell to the streets below. ‘They must look like that’, thought Relos; a group of such different flowers that they complimented and clashed with each other beautifully.

Relos could only note how different each of the princesses looked. There were certain features that were shared by all of them, if one looked, but they each had special traits that separated them. Relos could only figure that was how Inamai families tended to be: similar, but not so noticeably related as families of other races.

Relos did not return his eyes again to the emperor but for a few moments at a time; instead, they flickered between princes to princess, out to the beautiful surroundings, the servants still waiting below, even to the table itself (it was quite masterfully created, and much detail had been engraved into the wood, which Relos was able to fully appreciate).

The emperor kept his eyes fixed solely on Relos, but the princesses were not so. Maybe one of them had the steely fixation of her father, but the majority of them were as mobile with their eyes, perhaps even more so, than Relos, going between their sisters to their father, back to the new prince. It would have been unnerving to be stared at by all 5 of them here, and perhaps that was what the emperor had been planning on, but it was not turning out that way.

It could have been five minutes they sat like that, the time expanded by the silence and the thoughts of both parties involved, or it could have been for half an hour they sat; it was impossible to tell the time.

Eventually, the emperor sat up slightly, and his hand went to his side to draw out a pocket watch. The action was so sudden and unexpected, that it took Relos by surprise. Watch replaced, the emperor settled back into his chair and said, “Well, it appears that my wife is not coming. Please forgive her absence, Master Relos; she was feeling most under the weather this morning, and I told her that she could remain in the palace if she did not feel up to coming outside.”

A valid excuse for the waiting, certainly, and there was no way to dispute it if the queen never came down and otherwise proved that she wasn’t ill. Relos gave a half-shrug, sighing a note calmly. “I hold no grudge against your wife, Your Majesty. Please, give her my regards: I will be earnestly wishing her well.”

The emperor took Relos words kindly, nodding somewhat, and then seemed to acknowledge the girls sitting around.

“Now, Master Relos, as I’m sure you’ve already gathered from the circumstances, these lovely ladies are my daughters, the princesses of Shigan. They were all so excited about finally being able to meet you, that they all requested to join us for lunch. I hope you do not mind their company.”

No, of course he couldn’t mind their presence; he would be required to marry one of them, after all. He would be expected to want their presence.

“No, of course not. The pleasure of meeting you all is, well, they would say: ‘all mine’. On reflection, though, that sounds terribly greedy. I should not be hoarding all of the pleasure for myself.”

He got at least one giggle from his words, he thought. The peripherals were somewhat tuned out as Relos gave his full attention to the emperor. Even when he graciously turned round the circle to grin at all of them, he was still paying attention to the main enemy. For now, at least, only the king mattered. Pawns were insignificant until they were moved a few times. However, the stronger pieces were a threat from turn one.

“Yes, well, I can assure you that the pleasure is shared,” recovered the emperor, as he was taken a bit back by the humour Relos employed. “Now, from oldest to youngest, they are: Bell”-here, indicated the person sitting to his right; the one that Relos had pegged as being the oldest of the group-“my eldest daughter; to her right, there is Mayuri,"-here, he pointed to probably the most unusual of the lot: a girl with flowing white hair, adorned with white, furry ears atop her head-"my second eldest; then, across from here, there is Elle,”-he motioned to the girl who was perhaps the brightest of her sisters, wearing a yellow sundress that was mixed with white, to look like pure sunlight-“the…middle child, of sorts; Then, to her and my left, we have little Rue here,”-this time he motioned to the only other girl at the table, the littlest one who had been the most restless one of them all during the period of silence; she was tiny, and although she seemed to be full of energy from her twitchy movements, her colouring was almost calming with the mixtures of greens and browns-“my second youngest. My littlest girl, Odessa, will be excluded from our meetings, as she is yet too young to be in a political meeting, such as this one. Surely you understand that.”

Relos nodded, trying his best to put the name, face, and order of the girls into his mind, as the information would unquestionably be of good use later on. While he did so, the princesses each took a moment to examine the situation, and the prince that was in front of them.

Rue Shigan

Rue Shigan was probably more uncomfortable in this moment than she had ever been any other time in her life. She’d had many awkward moments before, as most people do, at one time or another; but those times were usually short, and rarely were they not the clear-cut fault of someone (usually her). This time, however, the awkward air that hung around her was not fleeting, nor was it easily nameable. The problem was: everyone was contributing to the air in the pavilion, herself included.

Everyone was seated in varying degrees of discomfort; she was the worst off, by far, but by contrast , the prince and her father, the emperor, looked to be perfectly at home in the situation. No one had said anything since the prince had sat down, not a single word. After the first few minutes, she had nearly snapped from the wire of tension that had been steadily tightening inside of her.

Honestly, this was the first political meeting that she’d been invited to for a greater reason than that she was the emperor’s little girl. This time, she was here for business; so why, oh merciful deities, was no one talking!?

Rue fidgeted in her seat, shifting minutely for the millionth time since she had been seated by the servants, and once again turned her rapidly flitting, worried gaze to focus on her sisters. She saw Ellenae, her first older sister, looking as calm and cool-nay, indifferent- as always. She had been hoping that Elle would have given her some silently passed advice, or perhaps a small, quieting gesture; unfortunately, nothing of the sort had happened. In fact, Elle seemed to be completely ignoring her small entreaties for assistance or direction; perhaps she was not consciously ignoring her, but rather she was so detached from the situation that she wasn’t noticing.

Still, Bell was too far away to bother with her anxiousness, as she was on the other side of the table. May as well…

She wasn’t going to be reassured, was she? She was going to have to sit her, anxiously waiting for something to happen while the tension in her mounts and mounts. This was just the kind of thing that she couldn’t stand: being stuck waiting. She felt far too confined in the moment; if only things would happen, if only, if only, if only!

Then, her eyes found a purchase in an unlikely place, after they had slid past Elle: the prince. She had been taking peeks at him since he had joined them at the table, barely for a second at a time, but now her gaze lingered on him now, desensitized as she was to impropriety of it by the feelings raging inside her hyperactive mind.

The prince looked nothing like what she would have imagined. She hadn’t seen too many men, naturally, but those she had were…well, normal. The prince, however, was anything but. Vibrant hues of color ran rampant through his physique, reminding her so much of the garden flowers that she so adored. Red hair that seemed to burn in the noon sunlight flowed gracefully down his shoulder blades, but the messy way in which the hair was styled was more endearing than its manner. His eyes were a shocking blue, and they seemed to be so deep and reflective, like the spring in the back part of the garden (she groaned a bit in response to that likening; did she relate everything to something she’d seen in the garden?). Even his clothes were colorful, the blue of his shirt matching his eyes and accentuating his hair simultaneously.

She had to admit: the prince looked amazing

She’d promised herself, and her father, that she wouldn’t try to tempt the prince, that she wouldn’t attempt to draw him to her side. She had thought that no man, no matter how royal, from another place could catch her eye strong enough to make her want to. Oh, but she was so wrong! If first impressions meant anything, and they so very much did to her, then she would be clamoring by the time that things to got serious for him to notice her. Those eyes! Oh, she could almost chirp…

And then, just barely-so barely, that if she hadn’t been staring at him, she wouldn’t have noticed it-he turned to look at her. His eyes made contact with hers, and she felt her cheeks redden just a bit at the linking. She was right; his eyes were like a multifaceted crystal, with layers and layers of depth to those pools of sapphire blue. He gave her the smallest of half-smiles, angled so that her father, who had been staring straight at the prince the entire time, couldn’t have seen it. He dipped his eyelid, as well, in a wink that, had she blinked at the same time, she would have long missed it. He turned back, then, determinedly staring at the emperor once more.

But her heart was suddenly beating erratically, and it was not from anxiety about the silence, now; it was the fault of the prince. He had looked at her, caught her staring at him; and he had smiled at her, no…winked at her.

She suddenly found it very hard to breathe. In fact, she was so caught up with trying to still her beating heart and ragged breathing, that she didn’t notice when the prince and emperor started talking.

She couldn’t understand herself; she was acting like a school girl, gushing all over a little wink and smile. How could she let him affect her so much? Oh, wait…she was the age of a school girl…

She hadn’t realized that she had groaned aloud until those seated around the table turned to look at her. She briefly saw surprise on her sister’s faces, a questioning glance from her father, and bemused grin from the prince, before she ducked her head to her lap and covered her face with her hands. She was absolutely mortified!

Oh, how was she going to deal with him when just a smile flustered her so? She shakily removed a hand from her face and ran it through her hair, trying to calm herself. She was disgracing her father and sisters, she just knew it...

Oh, perhaps she shouldn’t have come here after all…

Ellenae Shigan

Elle could be doing far more amusing things than she was doing right now. Several things came to mind as she sat, slightly slouching in her chair, her arms crossed over her chest. She knew she could have been causing the uneasy air that had appeared as soon as she had let out her exasperated sigh minutes earlier, but none of it concerned her. She could have cared less.

Or, she thought she did, until her father directed his gaze to her and barked out her full name with just enough distaste and sharpness that she moved her gaze to him, turning her head in the process.

"Ellenae Aerowyn Shigan. You know better."

She let out a breath. She knew his voice couldn't have been any louder than a hiss, but it was loud and clear to herself, and just as she righted herself in her chair did she hear the prince approach on the grass. Elle alerted the king to his presence by her rapt attention, and if it hadn't been for her acute hearing, he probably wouldn't have noticed until he was nearly seated.

Oh. She could like this. She could like this a lot, she mused as he sat, taking a good look at the man on the other end of the table. He was nothing like the prince they had a year or two prior, who was monotone, quiet, bland. The prince sat tall and proud, but not disrespectful, and even as the moments ticked on and silence enveloped them all as they waited on their mother (who Elle knew wouldn't be coming. She rarely partook in these meetings, other than to smile and seem inviting.) She watched Bell sit just as the other red head was, trained and preened to perfection, use to such a thing. Elle did not have that luxury; while she had partaken in Retir's treaty negotiations, she was still considered far too young for the prince, given their age gap, and Bell had been the proper candidate. She had come in contact with the prince of that nation in passing but was not expected to sit at such formal meetings.

That was her only excuse for her disrespectful conduct, she knew, leaning forward and placing her elbows on the wooden table and her chin in her hands. She wondered, briefly, as she looked up at the sky, just how long this would last. She knew, in such a sunny area, that she would much rather be napping than awake at the moment, and even the thought brought a yawn to her lips. In a last-ditch effort she covered her mouth.

Her gaze swiveled to the prince again, barely listening to the conversation her father and the young man were having. He was nothing like the black-haired, cherry-eyed prince of before, and even his appearance was nothing she'd expected. His hair looked like he'd never seen a proper hair cut - or styling, for that matter, she noted with a quirk to her lips - and it was a color she'd only seen on Bell. Her sister's was a richer, darker hue, whereas the prince's - Relos, she heard - was a brighter, fiery shade. If his shoulders and the curve of his upper arms were any indication, he probably partook in some sort of sport, though it was impossible for her to know what.

His silver tongue and the grin he gave her and the rest of her sisters was enough for her to smirk, sitting back in her chair and pawing at her hair. Oh, what she would do to get that man on her side. She had heard from her father just what the plans were - to keep his daughters out of scandal, the same kind of scandal that he, himself, had been involved in - and use a third party in order to corrupt Zaiphar and their end of the treaty. He'd never heard of royalty using a mere whore before, and she didn't quite understand why her father would pay someone to seduce the prince when he knew all too well of what Elle partook in, but it wasn't her place to ask, and frankly, she didn't care. She could get what she wanted, no matter.

Her father had made a point of trying to keep her out of the negotiations. She wasn't considered a legitimate heir, a legitimate princess in either of her parent's eyes, but with such a large age gap between Bell and Rue, it went without saying that she would be partaking. She would probably become first in line to marry the prince, she realized, gaze flickering to Bell, after the others began to realize the Retir prince wasn't entirely gone from their palace. She wasn't ignorant to her sister's late night endeavors nor her "sight seeing" trips from the palace, nor her sudden aversion to clingy tops and dresses. She knew more than anyone believed, and she was alright with them believing she was blind to the situations. It kept her out of the mess of things and gave her more sleep than any of the busier members of her family.

Even if Relos decided she wasn't material suited for Zaiphar, Elle knew it wouldn't be hard to get him on her side. She knew far more than she let on, and she would be willing to give him some of the palace secrets... at a price. Nothing was hardly free, after all.

At Rue's sudden movement and noise, Elle couldn't help but let out a bit of laughter. Rue had to be the highest strung of them all, but it suited the girl more than she'd like to admit. A smile came onto her face.

"Wren," Elle stated briefly, breaking up the men's conversation with a simple word and glancing at Relos, that sly smirk still present on her features. "She's a Wren, if that explains any of it. Forgive her, this is her first time in such negotiations. I was the same way when I was her age." The coy look instantly changed when she looked at Rue, transforming into a smile that was meant to be supporting of her younger sibling. She wasn't trying to embarrass or put emphasis on her reaction to the prince; she was merely trying to play it off, hoping her explanation would calm any wayward thoughts Relos may have had of the sixteen-year-old. She heard her father draw in a warning breath, and with a nasty glare in his direction she slouched in her chair.

A huff of breath signaling that yes, I know I'm suppose to be seen and not heard, old man, and Elle fell silent again, simply observing the royal's conversation.

Bell Shigan

If Elle and Rue were any hint as to how the rest of the prince's stay would go, Bell could only hope that May would be their redeeming force.

She had been the second one to arrive, after her father, and the silence they sat in could nearly mirror the silence they sat in now. It hadn't taken long for May and Rue to arrive, and unsurprisingly, Ellenae had been the last to take a seat at the table, a yawn escaping her lips and a hand in her hair. As soon as she sat down, Bell could feel her put her feet up on the bar running the length of the table. It brought a ghost of a smile onto her face, and for the moment she leaned back against the wooden chair.

Elle heard the movement, her gaze flickering in all different directions - from Rue's twitching and flatting of her skirt to May and her father, who had yet to speak to any of them - before finally landing on Bell, offering her an eyebrow raise. The eldest simply smiled, letting out a soft sigh in preparation for the long afternoon that had been bestowed upon the four of them. It would be interesting, to say the least; Rue, while not ignorant to treaty and political meetings, had never found herself really a part of one and thrown in the midst of things. If she had been in her father's shoes, perhaps she would have better prepared the littlest girl, but he hadn't and there wasn't much else they could do.

Elle wasn't new to any of this, and neither was May, for that matter. Still... the matter of respect and discipline came up in her mind as she waited for the prince to arrive, allowing herself this moment of downtime and to stare at the flowers around them. She worried about Elle and her disposition and knew she was a major cause in Rue's unneeded stress, and if there was one thing she could say to her to correct her before the prince came -

"Ellenae Aerowyn Shigan."

-- Oh, well, her father had it, albeit grudgingly. She still acted like a child, Bell mused, watching her cat-eyed sister sit up and put her elbows on the carved table, tracing it with one of her fingers. When her gaze abruptly flickered in another direction, she knew the girl had heard something, and that something had to be the prince. She sat up, folding her hands in her lap and made quick work of making sure she was presentable, and made a point of nudging Elle's foot under the table so she would sit up straight.

He was attractive and there wasn't any way around it, and the thought was fleeting. She could see Rue's eyes dart from him to something else and back, and the less than demure look on Elle's face told her enough. May and herself had been old enough to be presented to Viktor, and while Elle had most definitely tried her hardest to come in contact with the Retir prince, her littlest sister had nothing but storybook characters and bedtime stories to compare the flame-haired boy to. Bell did, and honestly, he wasn't quite anything that would suit her fancy.

He seemed reckless, with that almost cocky grin and the wink he slipped to Rue. The action immediately made her think of Elle, and the thought alone caused her to frown. If he ended up being anything like his quick words suggested, Bell was worried, and it wasn't helped by the smirk that rose onto her sister's face.

Oh, it was going to be a long year or two, wasn't it...

Bell had gotten away with sneaking around with the dark-haired prince of Retir for the sole reason that she had no ulterior motive. She knew there would be a time, a very likely time, that she would be forced to wed the prince, and she had accepted her fate. She'd tried to make friends with him, and it seemed his silence and her patience were quite a match for each other. He would sit in his room and tinker with clocks and other things, the only light being an oil lamp perched haphazardly on a set of books and the window behind his bed. She would take a seat on his mattress, her back against the wall. It was weeks before they really began to speak, and it wasn't until the very end of his nearly three year stay that anything occurred.

She knew it wouldn't be the case with the Zaipharian prince and Elle. She was much too voiltile, and more than once she wondered if the blonde even knew the word "love" or "romance." If she even knew a relationship past quick sex. She doubted she really did.

The groan Rue made broke her out of her thoughts for a moment, glancing up from her hands and to the girl across the table from her. Elle took the opportunity to speak, the lazy, half-lidded look on her face, and as she finished she slouched back in her chair. No amount of foot prodding would get her to right herself.

Hesitantly following suit, Bell allowed herself to sink back against the seat, smoothing down her dress and riding it of any wrinkles it had at the moment. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the sunlight warm her skin and try to quell the nausea that was beginning to bubble in her stomach. She felt a sudden kick to her shin, soft and fleeting, and when she opened her eyes the girl sitting across from her had her eyebrows knit and concern written on her face.

Bell simply smiled, drawing in a deep breath and sighing. It as going to be a long day, wasn't it...

Mayuri Shigan

Mayuri sat regally in her chair-posture erect; feet tucked neatly below her, toes curling back; hands folded delicately in her lap; tails gently spooling around her lower half, draping over her thighs and the edge of her chair like a living blanket-along with her sisters at the table, as they waited on the arrival of the prince, Relos. They had been convened a bit earlier than the palace servants had told Relos to arrive, so they would be sure to get situated and prepared before he arrived. In all honesty, though, this waiting time was just proving to be a pain for her. It was decently warm out, not enough to really bother anyone else, but to her cold-natured form, it was sweltering. A fine trickle of swear ran down the back of her neck, causing her to break her posture a bit as she flinched. She opened her mouth to pant just a bit, and then stood, placing a hand on Bell’s shoulder and meeting her eye in a wordless plead. She understood, without having to question her, and stood as well. The two switched seats, allowing May to sit in the more shaded seat.

This time when she sat, she didn’t bother to arrange herself so properly again; she sat comfortably, if a bit straighter than a normal person. It was still hot, but the shade offered her some relief. She reached a hand out under the table to give Bell a thankful squeeze of her hand underneath the table. Just in time, as well, for as soon as she was retracting her arm, the prince stepped up onto their balcony.

May hastily reached up to brush the fringe of her pale hair out of her eyes, and then proceeded to examine this princeling. For a moment, red eyes met red, and May was momentarily confused. She turned her gaze back to Bell, for a moment, and her confusion settled. The shades were different, upon comparison, but had Bell not been here to provide reference, she could have easily mistaken the prince’s hair for Bell’s.

It was odd, sincerely so, to see the color upon his head, though. Such a color had been reserved in her mind for Bell and Bell alone. So rapturously was she caught up with this phenomenon that she did not move her eyes from the prince’s head, even after he had sat down, for several minutes.

When she did finally tear her eyes away, it was because she had started with confusion. She had woken from her trance because she had noticed the lack of communication. She flickered her eyes around the table, wondering, dreading, the possibility that they were waiting on her to say something, like introduce herself, and she’d been dumbly staring at the prince.

This proved not to be the case, thankfully. Everyone sat quietly, each acting according to their own preference: Bell still sat primly; Elle was relaxing, practically lounging in her chair (May felt the edges of a grin tug at her mouth from her little sister’s indifference); poor Rue was fidgeting in discomfort.

She turned an eye to her father, noting how calmly he was sitting, starting directly ahead at the prince. So, it was that kind of game that the old man was playing, was it? This time, she couldn’t help the grin that came to her. She loved a good game, a good tease. She turned , yet again, to face the prince, and attempted to see how he was faring.

If he was confused or worried about the proceedings, then he was quite adept at hiding it. His face showed nothing but a thin veil of amusement as he lazily flicked his eyes between the princesses and the emperor. A few times, for barely a heartbeat or two long at a time, his gaze rested on her, examining her, and she resisted the sudden impulse to blush from his appraising glances. Now that she was distracted from his hair, she was able to fully appreciate the entire person that was Relos. His height (and, although it was a bit difficult to tell while he was sitting down, she was fairly certain that he was even taller than herself); tanned skin, stretched out over a muscled frame; a good looking face, accentuated by two, jewel-like eyes.

She made a low sound of approval somewhere deep inside her mind, and it sounded more animal than human to her inner thoughts. She shyly tucked a paw-no, a hand-to her stomach, clothed in elegant purple silk, and put a bit of distance between him and her.

Hmm, he’s a cutie…

She continued to ogle the man in front of her, not really paying much attention to anything else, liking what she was seeing. When her father finally started to talk and the prince started to respond, she only half paid attention to the words being said.

This prince was very different from the last one they’d had; Viktor had been nice enough, and even handsome in his own way, but he was darkly toned, and hadn’t suited May’s tastes (although he must have suited Bell’s, she thought wickedly). This new prince, however, was much more ‘her speed’, as she’d heard Elle call it before. Between the bit of humor he’d displayed and his looks, she had to admit that she had high hopes for this prince. Maybe he could be the one, after all…but she was definitely getting ahead of herself, there.

The noise from Rue gave them all a pause, as everyone turned to see what was wrong with the littlest princess. No hints could be drawn from her face, though, as it was quickly hid in shame behind her hands.

May’s heart constricted, all the previous excitement she’d felt about the prince suddenly gone, replaced by worry for her little sister. Oh, poor Rue; she shouldn’t have been allowed to come out here in the first place! Now that she had though, she’d gone and worked herself up into a fit. May started to stand, intending to take Rue from the table to a quieter part of the gardens, where she could make over the little girl and soothe her. Before she could lift herself from the chair, though, Ellenae spoke up.

Her words were not mocking or accusatory, rather, they were calm and explanatory. In fact, May couldn’t have done a better job herself at smoothing over the problem. From the way that Rue perked up, unfolding herself from her bent-over position just slightly, May knew that she’d been calmed by it too.

All it took were a few kind words from Elle, huh? Mayuri smiled just a little bit as they all settled down just a bit. After a few moments and a few conciliatory comments from the prince himself-May was touched that he seemed to want to ease Rue’s embarrassment too-the meeting continued on, both the emperor and prince getting back into the deliberations, now earnestly talking opposed to the earlier silence. Oddly enough, Rue’s outburst had served to break the ice.

When she was sure that the prince wasn’t looking at her anymore, his attention fully focused on the emperor, she slipped her foot out of her shoe and extended it under the table, quickly finding Rue’s leg. She gently rubbed the appendage, hoping to soothe Rue a bit more. When she felt Rue’s little hands clutch at her foot and hug it to her leg, she smiled a bit to herself.

Rue held her like that for a bit, but after a few minutes, released her and sat up again. She faced the group again, cheeks still a bit pink and eyes a bit red and puffy from nearly crying, but a smile on her face. In fact, she seemed a bit heartened by the actions of her sisters and the kind words of the prince. She looked like she was better off than she was before her outburst, calmer.

May chuckled a bit at the teary, yet happy appearance of her little sister. Perhaps she was suited for this, yet.

Her eyes then sought out Elle, and when the blonde’s miss-matched eyes locked onto her red ones, she mouthed a quiet, but heartfelt ‘thank you’ in her direction. She didn’t stay to see her reaction; although she could imagine it, knowing her sister as she did (she most likely would have played it off, shrugging a bit, while her cheeks traitorously reddened from the thanks). Instead, she sat back in her chair, now quietly listening to the talk between the prince and her father, too tired from the little emotional episode they’d just had to pay too much attention.

May smiled a bit to herself. No matter what her father or Bell ever said about Elle, she was still their sister, and that meant that she was part of the family.

The Lunch Meeting, Pt. 2

Relos Zaiphar

Relos smiled at the emperor, calmly brushing aside the quiet thanks that he had offered the younger prince on the behalf of his daughter. A few more pleasantries were exchanged then, simply for the purpose of easing the slightly tense air that had been made by Rue’s condition. As that wound down, though, Relos couldn’t help but notice that the emperor was speaking with him more easily now. It was if...in spite of himself, the emperor had eased up to him, somewhat. It was as if, being nice to his daughter had helped the emperor see him in a slightly better light. Relos didn’t mind think too much about it, knowing that, after having time to reset his thinking, the emperor would go right back to treating him like the enemy.

Still, it was worthy to note that the man did, at least, genuinely care for his daughters. That was useful information, certainly. And that was the only explanation for the odd change of coloring that he was displaying currently.

With the princesses now acting as little more than adornments, an audience at best, the two males resumed the discussion. Things started small, the emperor easing them into the realm of politics gently, with a typical – “Now, we’re here for business, not small talk, as you know…”

Of course he knew, but that didn’t mean that small talk wasn’t nice. In fact, if the business could be all in all avoided, Relos wouldn’t be complaining.

But, that bullet was intent on being bitten; still dealing in the realm of small topics, the emperor continued by restating more common sense things like: “You’re here from Zaiphar to discuss the trading conditions between our countries” and “If we’re going to reach an agreement about this situation, there’s going to have to be some work done on both fronts, you know”. Duh, and…duh, although Relos had an inkling that most of the ‘work’ was going to be done on Zaiphar’s part.

Then the emperor went off slightly, giving Relos a bit of a pause. “So, Relos, tell me,” he said, sitting back in his chair and resting his chin on his clasped hands. “What do you think of Shigan, so far?”

Relos was taken aback, slightly. In retrospect, he should have expected this line of questioning, but some part of him that lacked judgment had thought that that particular answer wouldn’t have to be carefully thought out until later.

That given, Relos floundered for a minute to compose something decent to say. In all honestly, Relos wasn’t much impressed with what he’d seen of Shigan. Most of his stay had been rather unpleasant, with the exception of the time he’d spent with Lilla. Further thinking about it, she was the only thing that he found even slightly appealing about Shigan currently-although these princesses looked like they could prove to be quite enjoyable.

So, if he didn’t want to blatantly lie to the emperor-and he didn’t, for lies based on lies had a nasty trait of turning back on the liar, while lies that were based on truth tended to hold stronger against scrutiny-he had to steer clear of directly mentioning Shigan, and more on the things he’d done since he got here.

Well, that shouldn’t be too hard…

“I won’t lie, your highness: I haven’t had much of a chance to enjoy your pleasant city. I’ve only been here a short while, and my exploration has been limited to your palace, and only a small part of it. However, what I have seen, I won’t hesitate to say, has been quite enjoyable.”

“I was not, however, expecting to find Ms. Lilla waiting for me. She was quite the surprise; a welcome surprise, but a surprise nonetheless.”

Relos knew he’d just played a dangerous card, mentioning Lilla right off the bat. However, he had plans to use her later on the deliberations. To what extent she would be of use, he didn’t know, but there was no way he wouldn’t try to use all of the materials at hand.

If he didn’t mention her now, then it would be difficult to draw her into the conversation at a later date, So, even though the emperor quirked his eyebrow a little at the mention of the ‘entertainer’ that he had prepared for the prince, he nodded at her name.

“Yes, I know it must have come as a bit of a shock. Had I been in a calmer state of mind, I would have more thoroughly explained the situation to you. But, as it is, I was distracted with several things-you know how it is-and it slipped my mind.” The emperor spoke easily, sounding almost as though he would have brought up the dancing girl later on had Relos not. Relos knew better than that, of course. There had not been enough time for anything compromising to happen, yet. If it was purely up to the emperor, Lilla wouldn’t have been mentioned until she’d had ample time to get him in bed.

Relos nodded, having expected such a line of defense from the emperor. So he was going to go with the ‘ah, I meant to tell you about that…’ line. Well, two could play it off until later.

“She was no trouble, I assure you. It was just a bit startling to see the bounds that your hospitality goes. I was not expecting my own personal tour guide, after all. I look forward to drawing on her knowledge in the future, when I get the chance to explore more of the city.”

“I advise you to do so,” he said. “It helps to have a local who knows their way around town show you around, eh? At least, that’s my mentality for travel.”

Heh, what was this, now: a vacation?

“Good thinking if there ever was any made by man, I say,” said Relos. “And I agree completely.”

Not much more was said. The emperor had a few more questions pertaining to Relos getting settled in and accustomed to the palace. To Relos’ slight displeasure, but according to his expectations, precious little was discussed that directly pertained to their true reason for being there: the trade arrangements. So this really was to be just an introductory meeting, and nothing more.

Halfway through the discussions, the servants reappeared, bearing trays of light food and drink, which were passed around the table. Some minor talk was exchanged while they ate, but the bulk of the talking took place before and after the meal. The talk extended a few hours into the afternoon, but it passed quickly-from the simultaneous ease and tenseness with which it passed. So light were the weapons that they were playing with at the start, but still both sides were so carefully wielding them. It made Relos anticipate how things would be later, when their words actually mattered

When things started to slow down, meaning the emperor was running out of things of little importance to talk about, he told Relos that it was time to be getting back to business, as one would say.

“It has been a pleasure talking to you, Relos. You’re quite the character, you are. I look forward to have more of these talks in the future. For now, though, I’ve got some other things I need to attend to. So, if you would, I would end our meeting here.”

“You will hear no complaints from me. I could use a bit of a lie down after the good food and conversation. And, after all, we have all the time in the world. No need to rush things.”

“Precisely,” said the emperor as he stood. “I’ll be on my way, then. One of the attendants will show you your way back to your room. Until next time.”

The emperor started to walk back in the direction of the palace, most of the servants trailing behind him. When he was out of range, Relos turned to look at the princesses around him, who had inexplicably been left by their father. He offered them a bit of a smile and stood. He moved around to each of them, planting a kiss on each of their hands as he bid them farewell. He did so politely to each, not trying to overstep any bounds-the same ones he hadn’t minded overstepping so much with Lilla.

When he came to Rue, he also leaned in and gave her an encouraging smile after he planted the kiss on her limp hand. Whispering, so that the others didn’t hear him, he told her, “Joie de vivre₁.”

To which, she shyly smiled back up at him, and with a quiet voice, responded “Mot Juste₂.”

Oh, she spoke old Zaipharian? Well, it made sense for the princesses to be schooled in the native languages of the different countries, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t surprising that she understood it so well. Some natives to Zaiphar didn’t even speak it that well…

He quirked an eyebrow at her, but then moved on. When he had made his rounds, he bade them all farewell one last time, then made his way back to the palace, escorted by a single servant. As he walked, the afternoon replayed in his mind, and he went over every detail: from the emperor to the surprisingly unique princesses. And then he thought ahead, and like the emperor, Relos found himself looking forward to the future, because it looked interesting.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

1.-Enjoying life, the feeling of living; Relos is telling Rue to, essentially, perk up, live life.
2.-Exactly, I know what you mean, what I was thinking; Basically, Rue is agreeing, saying: exactly what I was telling myself.

Lilla Rowan

In the time he was gone, Lilla had put away what little she still had left and arranged her personal belongings in the room. She had set up a small mirror on the desk in the corner, making it act like a vanity, and had pushed her few pairs of shoes under the bed as to not trip on them. She designated one of her empty luggage bags as her laundry bin and carefully stowed it out of sight.

She had done her dance stretches and did what little she could in the space she had, half-heartily going over her pirouettes and chasse steps, and had gotten her shower early so she wouldn't have to worry about it later. One of the servants had brought by a tray of food and she had ate, and not too long later they returned to take it back.

In all honesty, she had gotten rather bored while he was gone. Lilla was so use to having Darcy and the other Fleures around to talk to, and there seemed to never be a moment of silence in the House, whether while she waitresses or after hours when they were packing up. She had opened the lone window in her room to let in fresh air and the soft noises from the courtyard, but it didn't seem to quell the silence as much as she had thought it would.

It was this boredom and silence that had caused her to remember the book Relos had been reading hours prior, and the fact that he probably wouldn't be back any time soon that encouraged her to go get it and begin reading. It was poetry, and it was very well written, crisp, with a romantic twinge to it. She had thought it had been a regular book, and upon opening it she had been quite surprised... after all, what kind of man read poetry?

She had found it hard to put down, especially at the one he had book marked, reading it by the flickering light of the oil lamp in her room. It wasn't until she had sat up from her position on her bed, stretching, that she realized just how long she had been reading, and she quickly returned it as to not get caught with it later.

"I had no idea negotiations would take so long..." Lilla mused softly as she came back into her room, shutting the door behind her. "I might as well get ready for bed..." She stepped out of her shoes, nudging them under her bed before going to change out of the dress she was wearing. She hesitated as she pulled the gray shirt on, bringing the collar up to take in a breath. It still smelled like him, albeit faintly, and with that in mind she smoothed the shirt back down. Lilla sat back down on her bed, flopping back with a sigh and staring up at the ceiling, letting her legs dangle off the edge of the bed.

She wondered just what they were speaking about, and it's importance. She doubted the king would have put all of his cards down on the table this early in the game; but the sole fact that the time it had taken for them to introduce themselves worried her. Was it something to do with her? Could he have a problem with the way she had acted and was bringing it up? Oh, that was a worrying thought.

She swung her legs, letting them hit the edge of the bed softly. She remembered how the past prince and what had happened, the sudden lock down on traveling and imports. Lilla wasn't certain what had caused it, but after, she remembered the prices of her once favorite goods going up to the point that she couldn't afford them. Limited quantity, they said. They weren't able to import from Retir any further. It was not such a big blow to her as it was soldiers and the smiths; Retir produced massive amounts of ore, and they were known for their precious metals, much like Zaiphar was for it's vast amount of crops. Lilla couldn't even imagine what it would be like for Shigan, should something like that happen with Zaiphar. Metals was one thing... food was another.

Her legs stilled and she sighed, shaking her head as if to rid herself of the thought.

"Relos, I hope you're not doing something stupid."

Ellenae and Bell and Rue and Mayuri Shigan

"He is all yours, girls."

Bell was the first one to speak as their father and the prince took their leave, waiting until she was certain both were out of earshot to say a word. She stood, noting the long shadows and the sun setting, and raised her arms above her head with a long sigh. It had, perhaps, not been as eventful as it could have been, but they all had sat there for several hours and she had tried her best to keep herself composed and her posture rigid. It was coming back to spite her, she could tell, smoothing down her dress and glancing around at her sisters.

Her affair with the Retir prince might have been kept a secret from her parents, but it was much better known among her siblings - especially Elle and May, who had been involved in the negotiations the last time. She couldn't help but smile, reaching over to Elle to snag her hand and ruffling Rue's hair, planting a kiss in the dark locks.

"What did he say to you?" Elle asked, leaning forward to glance at the youngest in the group as they began to walk back to the palace, their pace languid. The darkening sky and the sun was casting fiery hues into the grass and the ponds, the majority of the bugs that had been out when they had come to the meeting, now gone. "I heard something... it wasn't our language. It didn't sound like it, anyway."

Meep! Rue, whom had before been stuck in a happy silence, suddenly started when Elle turned to question her. The littler girl stammered at first, her cheeks going red from her blush. She stared at Elle with wide eyes, afraid to answer, knowing that her sisters would probably take things out of proportion. He’ just said a few kind words; it didn’t mean anything more than that! “W-Well, he…he…” she started to say, trying to find a way to answer the question without lying or giving the whole truth.

"Leave her be," Bell said, "what was said between them is their business." Rue looked up at her eldest sister, shooting her a thankful look as she breathed a sigh of relief. At least for the moment, the crisis was diverted….

Elle tugged away from her sister's hand, gathering the hem of her dress up so it bunched in her hands and her legs were uncovered. She turned to face her older sister, a devilish smile on her face.

"You know what that leads to, right, Rue?" She said, her tone teasing, not meaning any harm in her words. The cavorting from the others caused May too look over, brought from her reverie just to see her sisters playing around. She smirked a bit, watching the proceedings from a ‘safe’ distance.

"'Their business' leads to babies. You'll get pregnant..." She made a motion with her hand across her throat, grinning over at Bell before snagging her dress up again. "...and die!"

Once again, Rue was forced to look at Elle. Also, like before, she was suddenly struck by embarrassment from her words. Her light blush, which had faded slightly, suddenly blazed back up in full, turning the brunette’s face a hot red. Just the thought of it! The prince and her, doing…that…oh, how mortifying! She hid her face in her hands and turned and pressed her front against Bell.

May, from her vantage point, tutt’d for poor little Rue, reaching a slim hand out to pat her on the shoulder gently.

"Oh, I'm going to get you for that!" Ellenae dissolved into giggles, taking off down the path ahead of Bell, who still continued at her slow pace. She shook her head and moved her gaze over to May, a smile rising onto her face. "Are you feeling better? I know you weren't so well when the meeting started," she said, pushing hair behind her ear.

May offered Bell a slight shrug of her shoulders, a wistful grin on her face as she looked up at the setting sun. “It’s nothing, Bell. It’s just that time for me, again. And-“ she added, quickly shooting a narrowed gaze and the back of Elle’s head “-I don’t mean that time, little missy. Don’t think I don’t see your wheels turning, over there!”

Elle turned back, one eye closed in a wink, and stuck her tongue out at May, wisely keeping silent. After that, she turned back to stare ahead, much as May had been. "What I wouldn't give for a good patch of sun right now..." Bell heard the blonde murmur, her head tilted back to glance at the sky. "Wasted a whole evening on that... bah."

May laughed, having overheard Elle as well. Reaching her arms up to stretch, she yawned and said “Morning, noon, night, I don’t care. I could use a good, long nap myself. Screw the time!”

Bell felt a slight movement against her front as the tiny princess nodded her agreement, her face still pressed firmly against her older sister while they all walked.

Relos Zaiphar

Once again, Relos allowed himself to wander the halls aimlessly as he made his way back to the room. He had plenty of information to reflect over, and the decent walk gave him plenty of time to do so.

When he entered the compound, he saw a few servants moving around, most likely returning to their posts now that the day’s excitement was over. Only a spare few actually paid him the slightest bit of attention, parting around the drifting prince like a gentle river around a rock. The few that did take notice of him only did so long enough to cast an angry glance at his back for being so obtuse. They had good reason, true; what fool walks the opposite direction while everyone else was walking the right way?

After a while of thinking about the future, he was stopped from further projection by a sudden intrusive thought. From seemingly nowhere, his thoughts turned to the one girl who had not been in his mind just moments ago: the one that he left in his room.

How was Lilla? Had she managed to keep herself entertained for the whole day, or had she died of boredom? With that amusing possibility in his head, he suddenly angled his way towards his room. He was ready to amuse himself a little with the conversation.

He entered the room quietly, having reached it after just a little more walking. He was pleased to find that he was able to find his way back to the place without having to ask for any directions. Apparently, he’d done enough wandering when the other night to impress it in his memory.

When he slipped in, he deftly shrugged off his shoes and put them under the bed. Once he was settled, he looked around. Seeing no sign of Lilla so far, he went over to her door and pressed the side of his head against her door, listening for any noise within. And sure enough, the sound of her feet kicking against the bed was just able to be heard by the prince.

He grinned, and went to go knock on the door to alert her to his presence. Just before he did, however, he heard Lilla’s voice through the door.

"Relos, I hope you're not doing something stupid."

His grin widened upon hearing the dancer’s voiced worry. So, she was worried about him, was she? Well, that was touching, really. He straightened up and leaned against the door frame, his head slightly bent forward to point towards the seam of the door, which he cracked slowly. When the door was open just enough to let in a sliver of light, but not enough to reveal the possibly compromising contents of the room, Relos spoke for the first time since entering the palace.

“Me, do something stupid? No, never! I thought you had some faith in me, Lilla.” He laid the sarcasm on thick, practically pouting over his last few words as he quipped at the unsuspecting girl inside the room. If he was lucky, he’d scare the crap out of her, which would certainly be entertainment enough. If he was unlucky, he’d piss her off, which would, in its own way, be just as entertaining. Either way, some entertainment was about to be had.

Lilla Rowan

His voice took her totally by surprise; she hadn't heard his footfalls nor the door open up a crack, and the light from his room should have caught her attention. Lilla had her eyes shut, oblivious to the sliver of warm light, and it wasn't until he spoke that she flinched and sat up.

"R-Relos!"

For a moment, she worried that she hadn't returned his poetry book, but after she frantically stood and glanced around her room, she realized she had given it back hours prior. There was several beats of silence before she stomped over to the door, yanking it open with a frown on her face.

"You scared me!" She said, over exaggerating her expression much like he had the tone of his voice. She struggled to keep the frown, the edges of her lips twitching. He was in a good mood... the meeting couldn't have gone as badly as she had been dreading it would be. She reached forward, prodding his chest much like she had earlier in the day. "I could have been getting dressed or something! You don't just do that!"

She was giving him a hard time, she knew, and her frown didn't last much longer. Her hand stilled against his chest, glancing up at him as he leaned against the door frame.

"They fed you, right? It's a little too late to request dinner..." she trailed off, becoming silent. She glanced him over, taking inventory as if the King would have truly set a finger on him; down his shirt and his sleeves, precariously gazing at his hands and checking for any form of nick on his pants. He was the same as he had left, his shirt a little wrinkled, but he was unharmed.

It was when she glanced at his shoes that she noticed her socks, and it didn't settle with the brunette for several blinks the state of dress she had presented herself in -- and that she was wearing his shirt. Lilla quickly made up for the lull she had created, hoping if she kept talking that he, perhaps, wouldn't notice the familiar taupe she was wearing.

"I hope the meeting didn't go badly... Judging by that smile on your face, I doubt it did."

Relos widened his grin upon hearing the gasp from inside the room. Quietly, he lifted one arm up tucked it down towards his chest: victory! Or at least, for phase one.

He heard his name being called in the room, and heard the sounds of her getting off of the bed and moving. He had figured that she was just going to the door so as to better communicate with him, so he was surprised (to put it simply) when the material that he was leaning his weight against was suddenly yanked out of place. He started to fall sideways, but managed to hazardously right himself before he crashed into a heap before Lilla’s feet.

Just as he was re-situating himself, he was nearly pushed back again by her sudden prodding finger on his chest. As she aggressively fingered his poor torso, she huffed at him, saying "You scared me!"

“Yeah, fine, I scared you,” he replied, staring exasperatedly at her. “But Lilla, you just almost killed me! Killed! I seriously could’ve died, and then where would we be?”

He matched her aggression with ire of his own; still it was not entirely serious, but things were slightly less humorous when one almost faceplanted. The comment about her possible state, though, proved to be too opportune a time to poke at her for him to remain glaring at her. Rather, his he cocked an eyebrow at her and said “Why Lilla, how do you know that wasn’t my intention in the first place?”

When she finally started to relax, coming down from her post-fight indignation, she leaned against the door. Relos eyed the spot where her shoulder and hip leaned against the frame and thought wicked thoughts. Oh, if only it swung further back…he so would. He refrained, though, both because it was impossible and because there was a limit to the amount of playful mischief one could make at any given time.

Instead, Lilla spoke up, asking him if they fed him. He returned his eyes to her face, a witty comment about whether or not she was Lilla or his mother on his lips, but it died away when he saw her eyes drift around him. It might have been improper if it wasn’t for the worried tint of her countenance. She wasn’t ‘checking him out’, it was more like she was…inspecting him, as if he had changed in the time he’d been gone. He felt his own face soften into a sort of amused smile as he leaned sideways as well, coming to rest on the parts of the doorframe opposite to her.

“They didn’t really feed me, but I’m fine. I don’t need be fed and watered like a plant, you know. And-“ here he ducked his head down a bit to look her in the eye, “-I’m fine, too. They didn’t torture me, Lilla. The princesses don’t bite…or, at least I don’t think three of them do. That yellow one, though; she makes me question, with those pointy teeth of hers…” He started to mumble towards the end of his statement, talking more to himself than her as his mind wandered back to the pavilion and the odd princesses.

Perhaps it was to be expected after mentioning the princesses, but the next thing she asked him was how the meeting went. To respond, he sighed, leaning back up and tilting his head backwards as he yawned to the ceiling.

“Boring, that’s how it was. The emperor had nothing interesting to say, at all. The only thing that kept me awake was the presence of the princesses, who are, may I say, infinitely more enjoyable company than their father. “

His smile returned as he finished, and he winked at her after his last word. With a chuckled, he added: “if I may be so bold as to say that the emperor is anything less than captivating…”

Lilla Rowan

“But Lilla, you just almost killed me! Killed! I seriously could’ve died, and then where would we be?”

"Oh, hush. You're fine," Lilla said, shaking her head at him and his words. "You would have fallen but you wouldn't have died. Qu-..." She paused, blinking at him and shaking her head, an incredulous expression on her face. She put her hands on her hips, a bit of laughter spilling from her mouth. "If that was really your intention all along, it would be smart not to tell me of it. After all, that's what the king is looking for."

There was silent for what seemed to be several beats; as he began to speak, the shirt was a constant reminder in her mind. Or, it was until he ducked to look at her, his face close to hers as he spoke, and she could see just how tired he was by the darkness under his eyes. Unintentionally she frowned, tilting her head a little as he stepped away and yawned; the motion was mimicked on her, reaching up to cover her mouth.

Her frown deepened for only a minute as he spoke of the princesses, transforming into a well-practiced, interested smile. "I haven't had much contact with them, but... they seemed... quite dynamic." She had passed a few on her way into the palace yesterday, hearing one of them complain as she trailed her father, an indignant expression on her face. Not all seemed quite as off-putting, as she remembered another with hair darker than the Prince's trailing behind, shaking her head at the girl's antics and offering Lilla a smile. They weren't all bad.

He had met the princesses... her job was officially a competition now. The king had strictly told her he did not wish for his daughters to wed over a treaty, for he did not want a treaty with this nation. He liked the prices he set and she doubted he would cave much to Relos's demands. She would have to make sure she captured his attention more often and in different ways now that his eldest daughters were a part of the equation.

Not to corrupt him. Just to keep him from getting himself into trouble.

"I believe you," she said, reaching her arms above her head to stretch, another yawn causing her to pause while she spoke. "I've spoken to him on one occasion and he did do a poor job." Perhaps he would have held more respect in her mind if he hadn't openly called her a harlot to one of his advisers on her way through the palace, the motion meant to be quiet enough she wouldn't hear, but she had. He was not very wise when it came to relations and that proved to be his weak point, given the price hike and his lack of reasoning why.

"If I can't do anything for you, I may go to bed," Lilla said, pulling the shirt down from when she had stretched. "You look like you could use some sleep too, Relos," she added, teasing.

Re: The Fleure

Okay, I don't think this thread could attract any more tumbleweeds but I was literally in bed this morning waking up and had the thought

"oh my god, fish Inamai. MERMAIDS." And my brain just went WOOSH because inamai's don't pick their breed it picks them so imagine all these babies that end up just being sea creatures or kept in royalty aquariums because there's literally no where else for them

but what if they only adopt some breed traits and this could do the whole Ariel bit and live on land also but be super ignorant because, no matter the language, speaking to someone underwater sounds different and they live without so many things and walking is foreign to them and UIEBRIG
I'm done xD

Re: The Fleure

I loved it! :D I like reading little one-shots like that nearly as much as I like writing them. You certainly are making me into a Relos/Rue shipper. I don't know if my heart could take it.
There are so many options with Relos... Relos and May would be super cute also... Except if they made red haired, red-eyed babies. I'd be afraid people would think it's the devil's child or something. But still! Red hair and white dog ears? Cuteeee.

While you worked on that, I finished my little scene I was telling you about. It isn't even really related to our characters, except I use Zaiphar as my prince's homeplace simply because he's meant to be a Vyx. It's a looong story, and I could give you some backstory, but I think the scene mainly speaks for it's self.

Prince from bustling city/country with the "magical" ability to create electricity and light that only runs in his family + Nomadic tribe with the odd Pyschre abilities but none of the looks who somehow manage to get into Zaiphar every few weeks, without the proper paperwork = these two. Drama llama.

Anyway, here's myyyyy story. It's at the end of the other snippets... which looking back at, I'm not entirely proud of. Oh well!

Re: The Fleure

Alright, well, I hope you don't mind that I went ahead and wrote my little vignette first. I just felt like it'd be better for me to do things in this order to get in Relos' character again. Besides which, I feel really content for having written another one of these. ^^ Makes me feel validated and all that. Anyways, hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The Story <3

@Hey, that's pretty cool! I didn't know that actually worked. Wait, wait, I mean; of course I knew that, yeah! I totally based that scene off of scientific fact.

Re: The Fleure

RELOS'S TRICKERY IS REAL
Image

Bribes are not needed and blaaaaahhh you don't need to apologize so much! No worries.

Re: The Fleure

Ok, yes, I'm back. I'm a coward when it came to facing you, but...back anyway ^^;

Even though you say you're not mad, I still feel the need to apologise. If you've read my OOC post, then I hope you understand that I really was onset by a bout of different, random things that took me out of commission for a while. So yes, I do apologise. It was never my intention to walk out on this rp, just so you know. If I ever am not on for an extended period of time, it is usually because things have come up in my life that prevent me from doing so. And, provided that I'm able, I will eventually get back on and hopefully continue where I left off.

That said, I was a bit lazy since getting back on RPG. Although I'm not sick anymore, nor am I still obligated to help my firend, I am still quite busy with work. Therefore, I haven't been writing as much as I used to be. And, honestly, I've been worried with playing my part in Neo-TDC, as I call it. I haven't actually bothered with this one yet...

For the third time, I'm sorry! I may or may not have anything up tomorrow or whatever, but I will work on getting something up sooner rather than later to get this back on track. It's going to be interesting, surely, picking this back up. I've sort've forgotten where we left off. Guess I've got some reading and character connecting to do ^^;

And yes, hugs are in order. Sorry (fourth time, now) for neglecting you for so long. If I catch spare moments over the next month then I'll start putting together another vignette. God knows I've had ideas and inclinations to do another, but...well, enough buts. I'll see what I can cook up. ^^

(Yes, I am plying you with literary gifts (read: bribing). Is it working?)

Re: The Fleure

I'm so sorry it's been so long since I checked in omg.
I'm just glad you're OK and alive and all that mushy business. I thought maybe you had done what a lot of people do on here and just jumped ship, which I was alright with, but you don't seem like the kind of person to just go and leave without saying goodbye, so I knew you had some reason or other. I have no reason for my absence except I have only freetime on Sundays, and have only had freetime on Sundays since the last time I posted... lol. Busybusybusy.

And yes I did creep through your recent OOC posts and that's how I know you're back, because I'm that kind of controlling girlfriend and I was a little concerned, so.

BUT YOU'RE BAAAACKKKK and you seem alright. And I'm totally not mad. xD I'm really not. I thought this was just to be declared dead, but the other day my teacher gave me a writing prompt and somehow it lead back to this with the races, and I decided to get on and check this after like two weeks of not being on. I'm so glad I did.

AHHH *hug* Okay, I'll stop acting like a ten year old now. Swear.

Re: The Fleure

I am so, so sorry, too. I replied to your message because I wasn't entirely certain what to do with it and didn't explain myself. Like you it's been a really busy week - I hope your health is okay :/ - even though it was my week off from things.

I'm just going to warn you that starting today - Monday - my schedule is going to be all kinds of crazy. I've got a little over a month until school starts, team camp is two weeks from now, and then my dreaded eight hour long two-a-days starts in three. Ack. That being said I will be on as much as I can because, well, I have no life outside of football and I love to roleplay! So.

Again I hope you're okay, and I'm so sorry about TDC ._. That happened to me one time before, I was just getting immersed into a roleplay and the creator cut and left before I could even save the text interactions so I could re-read them. It was only the beginning and we had so much more we could have doneeeee.

I'll go read your post and probably fangirl flail because that's what I do, yes.

- Gracie

Edit: eagierubgeri it's three thirty and I really ought to be asleep but I just spent like twenty minutes trying to draw Relos because for some reason, that part after she takes inventory makes me all mushy inside. I couldn't find a pencil so i had to use a pen and it looks like he's wearing a bumpit so I'll probably try a better version in the morning, but either way I'll probably end up showing you.

I hate it when the movie in my head is so well drawn I can't do it. I don't know if that's a me problem, but this whole RP has been like it's own anime and I can't even draw it the way I see it, and it makes me sad.

Plus, he didn't notice her shirt and that made me grin.

Okay. I'm going to bed. Post up by Friday, at the latest, I promise!

PS: I was playing the sims on one of my DC houses, and my teen girl Irey comes home from school with a friend! I didn't recognize her at first. She brought home Rue :D
Image
You can't really see her but I thought it was cute. They gossiped and played a little soccer.

So it's Wednesday and I haven't posted and I'm sorry ._. I'll try to get to it this weekend. Swear.

Re: The Fleure

Gasp, I'm alive! Don't worry, I didn't think I was either. I'm just as surprised as you are, honestly!

Heh, all humor aside, sorry for not having anything up earlier in the week. It has just all around not been a great week for me; had plenty to keep me busy, and got a bit of bad medical news, so I've been running with a pretty low tank. By that, I mean I've been pretty sulky. Combine that with the fact that TDC closed, so I don't have my little not-family to amuse myself with, and you get one sad little Rinn.

Pass the tissues? I still need to get over that...even went and signed up for a new rp impulsively to try and fill the gap, but...alas, nothing could compete!

...I'll need another week and several more mugs of coffee before I'm normal again. Or, well...until I'm "normal", again.

But enough of me rambling about my (agonizingly boring) life! As far as the posting goes, I went ahead and put of the princesses little chat up, since there wasn't really anything else to add to it. (Why I even sent that back to you in the first place...ahh, not sure?) And I put up the "MEANWHILE, IN ANOTHER PART OF THE PALACE!!!" post up, as well. That'll be the thing to respond to next, I guess. Relos and Lilla need to have their little pow-wow. Touch base, make a few jokes, give eachother googly eyes, and all that jazz. Ahh, aren't the two of them just adorable? (I may be thinking of the wrong couple, don't mind me)

And, yep...that's all for now.

-Rinn.

-P.S, The Princesses post has such a colorful introduction! It's like, Quadruple Rainbow all the way across the title page, man! What does it mean?..

Re: The Fleure

Yep, to copy you: I replied!

Sorry that it took me a little while to write it all up. I read your reply the day you put it up, it just took me a bit to get down and write. I went to do so yesterday, but then I hopped over to my other rp, TDC, and to my enduring sadness: we're going on indefinite hiatus. That basically depressed me for the whole of yesterday, so writing didn't really seem like a desireable action.

About the specific posts themselves, I wrote everything I had to say in the mail I sent you. I sent them by mail, rather than post them, because...well, because a part of it needs a reply....maybe? Ok, mainly because I want you to tell me if it's crap or not before I actually post it (thereI'lladmititmightbecrap/sadface)

"I was re-reading through the intro page for the original Fleure...and it says that they're born as their animal and change back shortly after."

'da hell...what if like, the child was an elephant Inamai? Owwwwwwwwwww. Yeah, I'll agree, there are some holes in that plan.

But, but...a little Rue-Egg?!?! /diesfromcuteness

Someone must now make a little art of this Rue-egg. It must exist!

Oh, and just for your information, I've been struck by some ideas for another little story like my Rue one. It's not as deffinite as the other was, by a long-shot, but it has been tossing around in my head for a bit...if it becomes too incessent, then I may be writing another one of those here shortly.

Re: The Fleure

That's so cool! I speak a little - and I mean a very little - French, so the concept made me smile. I'll see what I can do with your post and perhaps I can add in some interactions among the princess as they go back to their rooms or some such.

Sorry I took so long - busy busy week - but I know if I don't get it done this weekend, next week's gonna be even busier! It'll be up by Sunday at the very latest.

Edit: I replied! I'm sorry if it's a little lackluster. I tried to keep it open ended so Relos could appear at whatever point he wanted/needed to. If you need anything just ask! :) I sent you Elle and Bell's because I wasn't certain if you wanted it added onto yours or not so you could respond... if not just let me know and I'll add it onto Lilla's post.

Also, I was re-reading through the intro page for the original Fleure... and it says that for Inamai, they're born as their animal and change back shortly after. I'm like... seeing as there's no restriction of what kind of animal you could be, I think that's a little farfetched when it concerns the larger breeds. And our birds. Because birds are born in eggs and that would be a little weird.

I know that's not really a major deal but me being who I am, I already have a breed in mind for Bell's little boy and I was just like "...wait a minute here." So... not that it effects you, but I'll be sidestepping that little trait xD

Re: The Fleure

Post is up.

Too tired to explain myself; I'll do that tomorrow, when I'm rested enough to hold my head up for a few moments. 'till then, lol.

Edit: Ok, I'm up now.

So, yeah, post is up. Sorry that it took a little while to do so, but I took a break after that little Rue shipping, lol. I've pretty much just ended the meeting now (which, might I add, I never intended to be very, very important; just in case you think I'm cutting it short. It was mainly for the purpose of introducing the princesses and getting the plot rolling). Looking back on it, I'm not entirely sure if I ended it on the right note...I might need to go back and add a little smidgen there at the end, maybe having Relos get back to the room so that you have something to post...

Also, I, once again, took a bit of liberty with the lore in this post. Yesterday and the day before, I wasn't quite sane; I'd been bombarded by a stream of movies and books that I love, many of which are set in foreign places. The crown jewel of this: Ratatouille was on yesterday, and I adore that movie. It's probably my favorite next to Studio Ghibli films. After watching it, I spent like an hour messing around, listening to the ending song from it, and i was feeling all French-y and, well, you get the point.

So, I decided to make Relos speak French, lol...

Or, at least in part. I've given Zaiphar a 'native language', something that the locals used to speak. I sort of touched on this before, with the origins of the name Zaiphar, without really meaning anything by it. However, I don't really feel the need to add a language barrier here, so I just decided: "Ahh, it can be...old; yeah, old. And everyone could just speak a sort of Common language, out of convenience..."

So, that's that. If you're willing to indulge a bit of stupidity from me, I'll use it (very) sparingly. But, if you're more of the opinion of: "Get these freakin' foreign words outta my beautiful story!!!", then I completely understand (Of course you talk like that, in my mind xD).

And, uh, since I only know (or knew, would be the better tense to use there) only the basics of the French language, I'll be taking liberties with it. I seem to take liberties with a lot of things. The little translations I added are not strictly correct, and a French speaker would probably slap me for butchering them so, but hey; it's a rp. There are no rules that say I must speak correctly (French or English).

Yep, that's it for now. I think. I will check again to see if I need to add a bit more, but if you think you have enough to post (maybe we should do a little pow-wow between the princesses...just a thought), feel free to go ahead.

-Rinn

Re: The Fleure

Oh my goshhhh my little shipper heart, how could you do that to me?! I swear in the middle, I thought you were going to kill him off. I swear I thought that and I sat there like "THERE'S NO WAY RINN WOULD KILL OFF RELOS." But I waited and waited for it and I did breathe a sigh of relief when you didn't.

That one little thing was so much better than all of mine combined. I swear to it! It kind of makes me laugh in a way, because I can see Bell doing the same thing, eventually - running off to Retir. Of course, hers would be much more scandalous, but what could the emperor do once they wed? Nothing, really, to Rue and Relos (lala I love their names together... alliteration! <3). He could, possibly, manage to shame Retir for the whole "baby out of wedlock" thing, but other than that...

Oh, how angry he'd be. He'd lost one daughter to a prince due to negotiations, only to lose another. Maybe he'd learn to be a little more lenient on his wants...

The scene with Relos with the King - I could practically see it in my head and Rue peeking through the doors and Relos just standing there, fuming, fists clenched.

I loved it sooo much. So so much.

And don't worry about it! Football started yesterday for me and I've been beat the past two days... so I probably won't be on much Monday through Thursday most weeks. It's doing what it's suppose to, but it sucks, I can tell you that. It's the biggest love/hate relationship ever.

No big deal on the post. I don't wanna rush you. Just whenever... although this does hold me over quite fine. I shall re-read it once I'm really awake.

Re: The Fleure

Ok, sorry it's been a little while since I've checked in. The last dreaded week of my two-week infirment has come and passed, leaving me now blessedly able to do what I want. I've spent the weekend enjoying that freedom, and, perhaps unfortunately, I haven't spent any of that time writing. So no, there's not a post from me quite yet, but there will be soon, I assue you.

However, while there's no post, there is something from me. Last night, after listening to a certain song by Sam, I got a sudden idea for a short story, much like the ones you've written. This is the first idea that's struck me so hard. and I can truthfully tell you that I stayed up for three hours last night writing this little vingette.

So, I just felt like sharing. Perhaps this'll help tie you over until I do get around to making that post ('Why didn't you write a post instead of writing this?' I really don't know, lol...)

And yes, you must listen to the song that helped to inspire this little story. I'll link it too. And yes, you should probably prepare some tissues. It made me sad just writing it.

Re: The Fleure

I'm really bad about depicting one type of something. I know I've got a few characters that start out acting the same way, but generally it just depends on their interactions. Few of my characters stay the way they're meant to... I mean, look at Lilla, she's suppose to be all docile and cute and the more the interacts with Relos, she's developing more of a playful side that probably wasn't as prominent before because of her Fleure responsibilities. It just depends xD

Same here... I didn't have school Friday and I don't have school Monday, so we've both got a loooong weekend it seems.

I finally got Bell's to work - I changed the file type from jpg to png and it seemed to do the trick!

Oh, galges... I know of those well from My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute. Although, she mainly plays eroges, but still.

I'm allowed to facilitate laziness! It's what I do. I was looking through it when you were on the website and I had to close it for a while because I could almost feel you judging me. Is that weird? I get nervous I guess haha.

I hope your long weekend goes nice!

Re: The Fleure

Welp, glad you liked May, 'cause I had to stretch a bit to think of a new princess. I'm not sure if I could have come up with anything differnt, lol.

Her post is up now, and I sort of focused it around Rue's little episode. Since May is supposed to be the mommy-sister to all the princesses, I figure that she'll wind up being emotional in the future much like in this post. Hope it wasn't too mushy, lol...Once again, trying something new with the new princess. I'd hate to have Rue and May be like clones, although I have seen people who can only depict one type of something.

Just one more week for my work influx to diminish; I've actually got an elongated weekend, as I've taken today off and Monday is Memorial Day, so I might even get to put Relos's part of "Lunch Metting, Pt. 2"™

Here's hoping, anyway.

As to the avy's, I see one for Odessa, but not for Bell. Although, I don't even think Bell's profile pic was working anymore. last I checked. Sometimes that happens with pic (I believe my old character Regal's pic no longer works, as an example).

And yes, this is turning out to be quite the galge...lol. (Pardon the TWGOK refrenece)

And by the way, I've enjoyed the side-stores you've written. As you saw, I commented on one scene (I just had to, it made me laugh so hard...), and I've read all that you've written when I had the chance to. I probably could have used those spare minutes to write, but...I guess I'd rather be lazy.

You facilitated my laziness. That makes you an accessory, I'm afraid. I blame you!!!! /policesirenslolwut?

Re: The Fleure

I like May! She's really cute and she's gonna be a great addition >:D I love how you explained her ears and tails; I was afraid to make my inami look too animal-like because I didn't want them to be furries (especially Elle, haha. Neko much?) But yours is super cute and you've got an explanation for it, which I like.

And that's completely understandable! I have finals in the next two weeks and then I'm home free~ ... until football starts. Haha.

In the mean time, I will be writing more drabbles as they come into my head like they did the other night... I have a complete wordpad doc filled with relos/everyone xD it's so bad.

On a different note, every time I try to give Bell and Odessa avatars, they won't show up. I've tried since I've uploaded them and nothing works, so I apologize that they aren't displaying.

This is shaping up to be something like an RPG dating game isn't it... lol!

pst. psssstt. por favor. I can't stop writing them /sob

Re: The Fleure

Alright, my second princess is up now! It took me a bit of finagling to get her up to par, but I like the way that she's turned out. I think that it'll be fun to play her as well, once I figure out how I'm going to.

Now, she's a bit different from the others, since I went a bit freely with the cannon rules. If she's accetable, great; but if you have a problem with anything I've done with her, then I understand. I'm perfectly capable of reworking her.

If everything's in order, and you accept her, then I'll go ahead and tack on her little post to the end of the current Lunch Meeting post. After that's done, I'll think I'll start a second post, Lunch Meeting Pt.2, otherwise the post is probably going to be so long, it's going to seriously screw with the average words-per-post thingy, lol...

Since I'm talking about posting, I'll just tell you what I told the guys at TDC: For the next two weeks, posting, or writing in general, will be very hard for me during the week. This means that the only time I have to do anyting is on the weekend. Just a head's up, so you know why it's taking me a while to post. After that, I'll be able to write whenever, which translates to: whenver I stop being lazy.

That's all for my update.

-Rinn

Re: The Fleure

asrugbei

gbigbig what is that I can't even omg

Allow me to translate my Tumblr speak to you: I looove Rue and how you wrote her. I know you aren't entirely certain if you like it or not but reading it made me grin like no one's business! I've got this high-pitched little voice for her in my head and it's perfect. It suits her so well.

And now I really have to find a way to properly write Elle....

I'm glad you like her! Just like you based Rue off of someone, I may have based Odessa's name off of one of my favorite books (Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream) I saw it on a fantasy name site and nearly threw a fit, I was so happy. I'm still working on Bell. I'm sorry both of them will be sparse on information, seeing as Relos won't have much contact with Odessa and she isn't going to need to be such a developed character, she ended up being quite short-winded. I'm dreading Bell will be the same way, but you never know. My characters rarely stay as they are meant to be on their character sheets, it seems.

It's not letting me edit your post, so I'll see what I can do with Ellenae and possibly post it here out of laziness.

Edit: I'm messaging Elle to you right now. I'm going to try and play off Bell, so I'm hoping what Elle is eluding to is going to be enough for you to ponder/assume until I get her profile up, which should explain everything. Honestly, Viktor is proving to be quite handy, and I hope Max isn't going to kill me or something for using his name in passing. It was just convenient.

Re: The Fleure

Yosha~ Rue's post is up now!

Thank God that's over with, lol...I've seriously spent four freaking hours on that post! Ok, maybe there was a lot of distraction involved in the meantime, but still...I've bbeen writing it for a long time! I'm pretty proud of it, though, so I guess it's 'k.

While I'm talking about the post, I have to say: I've never played a character like Rue. In fact, I've only played one female character ever, and she was more of a companion for another of my characters (see: Revenant Frostbourne and Lichelle Everwynd), and even then, that rp died pretty quickly (sad, really). That said, Rue's a bit outside of my comfort zone, as she's quite different than my general role.

I tried to do my best by her, but it was a bit difficult to. I tried to make her thoughts seem much more sporadic and intensive than Relos', but I'm not enitrely sure if I exceeded in that. In retrospect, I just see a lot of italicized words and excalamation points...Ahh well, you be the judge. I'll probably get better at it the more I play her, but time will bring that.

I have yet to write out the 2nd oldest's page yet, but I do have ideas for her already. It's just sitting down and getting it together, now. I've gone ahead and referenced her in Rue's post; her name is Mayuri Shigan, May for short. That'll be coming later, perhaps even as late as next weekend. I've sort of neglected TDC in order to get Rue's post up, and I'm feeling kind of bad about it, so my next effort is going to be directed to them.

In other news, the youngest princess is a bunny? Heck yes...

That is all.

Away with you now.

Peace.

Re: The Fleure

I'm working on their profiles right now! If you find any mistakes in them when I post them I'm sorry - I had one girl set and then totally decided to flip-flop Bell and her littlest sister, so some of their appearances/characteristics may be backward. I'm super excited that we're (you!) getting the ball rolling... Now just to make myself happy with these two characters...

Obviously the youngest would be excluded from the meeting (as you've stated) and I have the train of mind that, perhaps, so Bell will be on the back burner, I could come up with some sort of back story regarding another treaty or something. Seeing as Shigan isn't exactly the nicest place. Maybe she ran off and eloped with that prince from Reitír and the only reason she's in the negotiations is because her father doesn't know. Thus making her disinterested in Relos and on the back burner.

...rambleramble I'll get what i can get done! Their profiles should be up by Friday.
