By the time she was twelve, Nurys had already begun to develop the curves her mother had once been coveted for and that is one of the few things Nurys actually gives her mother credit for. She is a rather curvy young woman and while Nurys has spent her entire life with at least a few thinner girls around her, she totes all of that junk in her trunk like her most prized accessory. She has a rather pretty face with her deep brown complexion, the green eyes she inherited from her father a compliment to her looks that she doesn't want to give him thanks for. Of course, with the way she contours her face for certain events, Nurys tries looking older, but even fresh-faced and dressing down, she knows she's stunning. Nurys is known for consistently wearing extensions and wigs - protective hairstyles - of varying colors, textures, and lengths which is why not many can say they know what her real hair looks like. Currently, her hair looks like this.
β§Sα΄ΚΚα΄β§
A lot of Nurys' style is influenced by the streets she grew up on, which means that she's more often than not toting something rather urban and reminiscent to a lot of that bad girl chic that's become super popular on Instagram now. She does tend to add a splash of athleisure in that she's not afraid to wear tracksuits and make them look cute, but at the end of the day, Nurys is always going to be seen, even when she's dressed down. She just has to be, especially if she can incorporate one of her own self-made textured blazers to Constance's boring uniform.

ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
i. It would be a fool to underestimate how intimidatingly smart Nurys truly is or how stealthy. For as much as one could speculate that her graduating this year instead of last year as she should have is indicative of her level of intelligence, Nurys possesses the sharp mind of a take-no-nonsense hustler who's main priority is that of herself and anyone she deeply cares about. As the saying goes, Nurys was thrown to wolves and there's no denying that with her indomitable nature, at some point, she became the leader of the pack. She's vicious and cutthroat when she feels that she needs to be, especially when in pursuit of her goals or taking care of what is hers, and doesn't feel an ounce of guilt for playing dirty in order to achieve what she believes is her destiny. Nurys is not one to fear the dark side; she's already seen and experienced it. And reading her at all? Impossible with that poker face.
ii. No one can deny talent. No one can deny attractiveness. It would be pathetic to do so because it speaks to a deep, underlying insecurity that one might not want to have someone call them on. With that being said, there is no denying either when it comes to Nurys. She would not have lured a good number of clients that once belonged to one of Michelle's employees into her own chair at the shop if she did not have the ability to weave magic into tresses that are either theirs or not theirs. She would not have gained the followers that she has on social media or the confidence from one of Michelle's celebrity clients who have heard her sing if there wasn't something in her that bespeaks future success. With that being said, while it is beneficial for Nurys to surround herself in an impenetrable tower of self-confidence, the foundation is built upon an arrogance that was constructed at a tender age when she realized how powerful she could be. When people continually validated the sway - the siren call - of her vocal chords. Nurys doesn't see it as much to fret over nor does she seem to be affected by the negative attention her ego receives. To her, the limelight at school isn't what belongs to her. The one on center stage in a sold-out arena does and she knows it, so everyone else should as well. And if they don't, they will.
iii. Just as people would say that there's always a party of some sort when wild, sexy Nurys comes into the picture, they also complain - and joking though their tones may be, there is truth in jesting - that you can't take her anywhere. Nurys follow with the explanation that she's too "hood for these bougie heuxes," and to some extent, she's correct. Nurys does not always filter herself, she's bold in pretty much everything she does, and if there's a loud and crazy crowd ready to fuck shit up, nine times out of ten that crowd will include Nurys. She's fun-loving and while select in those she actually develops close relationships, Nurys is sociable when it comes to big crowds, able to weave her way through different peoples because of this untouchable, magnetic shine to her demeanor. There's still the part where Nurys has a thing against authority figures and testing people with how purposefully petty and abrasive she can be, but she doesn't like talking about it, not deeply, of course.
iv. While everything that the light touches in the halls of Constance Billard belong irrevocably to Clara Chase, there are echoes of Nurys' own influence in the dark corners that she relishes. Nurys' own brand of self-assured swagger and easy smiles, while combined with traits others would call less than stellar, are paramount in her being able to get what she wants from whoever she wants it from. For Nurys, she calls it simply her tending to have that effect on people, this ability to inspire lust and obedience from others because of coquettish smiles, bold gestures, and silky sonnets with much more sensuous undertones. Others will note that they're just weapons in using people, which Nurys has no shame in. If a particular relationship benefits her end goal, then so be it, Nurys just has to lay on the charm. And being the type of girl who doesn't take no for an answer, she's more than likely going to get what she wants, even if she has to use somebody else or make plans to play dirty.
v. At the end of the day, no matter what anyone who doesn't like her has to say, there has to be some thick skin on this girl for her to remain as driven and not crushed by the weight of her last eighteen years as she is. There has to be some steel beneath the silk of the skin she cares for daily for the easy laughs, chill and unbothered vibes, and the fearless way in which she gives herself to those Nurys actually gets into a relationship with. For all that that sleek seduction and lazy flirtationships she gets involved in, the one thing no one can say is that Nurys doesn't know what loyalty and faithfulness is. It's what she requires from others and she might serve herself at the end of the day, but if she's given herself to another individual, then serving herself means keeping them happy, and loyalty is happiness. Nevertheless, there has to be some kind of inner strength within her that allows her to still want what she wants, work for it, and still find the time to enjoy the simple things like the video games she plays or the times she spends with Michelle's granddaughter. You don't go through what Nurys has without some form of resilience and just like her voice and eye for fashion, that's just another thing Nurys has acquired from her mother, begrudgingly.
β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬
Above all things, Nurys' number one passion in the world is singing. As much as it comes with bad memories, it's been an outlet she can't let go of and a talent she can't help but see herself succeed with. Fashion comes as a close second. Nurys wants all that her mother couldn't fully gain: taking center stage, the fame, money, influence and overall security. It's probably a good thing that Nurys has a pretty quick metabolism because she has a deep love for junk food, but particular flaming hot cheetos, burrito bowls from chipotle mexican grill, and brownies. As much as it might clash with her "real thug shit," Nurys never fails to enjoy herself when spending time with Katiana, the toddler in her terrible twos who demands Nurys' attention when she's home. No matter how hard Nurys might be, or how distracted she might be by her own pursuits, at the end of the day, she does appreciate those who are either loved ones or family, especially her little brother. She's stilll likes having a good time and doing things her way, which entails hard liquor and partying. But never let it be said that she's not a bit of a dork with her love for anything Marvel, particularly Deadpool, and video games.
β§DΙͺsΚΙͺα΄α΄sβ§
If there are two things that are sure to piss Nurys off if you continually do them, they would be to either ask questions about her mother, in which case she might nonchalantly mention that the woman is dead, or be compared to her mother, which will be met the first time with an eye roll. She can't be held responsible for what happens the third time. Nurys likes people to recognize that yes, because of genetics she's going to look like her mother, and because of those same genetics her vocals remind people of her. But she is not her mother; she's not weak and needs to partake in the abuse of substances other than alcohol like that woman did. Not only could they damage her vocal chords, but Nurys has seen what addiction looks like and she's going nowhere near it. She also has a deep, abiding hatred for crying where, no, she won't catch a fit for doing it, but it's not her thing. She hates being emotional. It's exhausting. She also dislikes her father and has issues with abandonment that she won't discuss unless with the right person. And she definitely hates people thinking that her promiscuity means she can't be in a relationship because, yes, she does like sex. But Nurys is nothing but loyal and though she serves herself, serving herself also includes keeping her people happy and faithfulness is happiness in any relationship. She's selfish, but she's not that selfish.
β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬
i. singing - During the nineties, her mother had pipes for days and while Nurys has noted that she doesn't have the full belting power that her mother possessed, there's a reason why people have likened her vocals to that of a siren. She possesses a raw talent when it comes to performing and putting on a show, and she didn't need any classical training or mommy and daddy's money in order to acquire it. It just is and what also needs to be is her getting fame and success from it. She was given the gift for a reason. She's also rather talented at songwriting and writing in general, the latter of which exasperates professors because for as much as she drives them crazy, she obviously holds a lot of academic promise for someone who has been in her situation.
ii. needle-and-thread - To be honest, it started off as a skill set acquired for the sake of survival and not looking a mess. Until Nurys realized that she was pretty good with a sewing machine, while also handling a regular needle and thread. Give her some fabric and let her look at something she sketched, and Nurys is able to create original pieces for various shapes and sizes. At this point, she figures that she can't just get into the industry with singing and being sexy; she has to be an entire brand with more than the two aforementioned. Which is why she started her own small line, which can be seen and followed via Instagram.
iii. deceit - There's a reason why a very few and select group of individuals in this world can tell when Nurys is lying, and why theft is one of the things one can't see on her record. She learned young in order to hide her emotions and has been noted for having blank expressions even when she's inwardly seething. It's not good, but Nurys figures that a lot of things in this world aren't good and people learn to deal with them.
iv. combat - This is nothing big, no extensive training other than what one would earn from living out past curfew and having less than savory friends who wound up getting you involved once they pissed someone off. Nurys' skill here is mainly street-fighting. She doesn't believe in the weak foolishness of just sending haphazard slaps and pulling hair; she has a rather impressive guard and a mean right hook, and has won a good number of fights in her day. Michelle thinks she can put it to good use and get some lessons, but Nurys has also told her to bite her and goes a few rounds with the punching bag in Michelle's son's old room.
β§FΚα΄α΄‘sβ§
i. ego - Well, what more is there to say? She is what she is and Nurys makes no excuses, so she doesn't necessarily believe there is any reason to be insecure when you're her. It's safe to say there's probably not much humility here, though she can fake it when she wants to impress people. But when people constantly adore your voice and say how they really can feel everything you've been through with it, combined with the fact that you already know that you're gorgeous, arrogance is born. So much so that Nurys believes whole-heartedly that she's meant to be an admired talent and deserves it; deserves the praise, applause, fans and everything she doesn't have now. She just does and yeah, it's annoying to some, but those who know and love her know that they'll reap the benefit of it all too, so there's no need to complain.
ii. collateral damage - Nurys can be a good schemer. Better than good, even. Excellent, in fact. Because she's developed such a good poker face herself, she's astute at reading the people around her to best get her revenge (or someone else's revenge) or simply plot against them if it gets her to where she needs to. With that being said, she doesn't always anticipates who gets hurt when she makes her plans or moves, resulting in someone she thinks of herself as friendly with or even a loved one being upset with her. Sometimes, they're being upset makes no difference; for those who really love her, they eventually can't hate her forever because she's lovable and in her mind, they get over it. She doesn't take into account that they might still hurt from her actions.
iii. abandonment issues - She doesn't call them issues. Nurys says that the people who want to be in your life will make an effort in order to be in your lives and it should be as simple as that. However, she does have abandonment issues, which is why - despite how tough she is - she has at least once stayed in an abusive relationship, just because she secretly does not like the idea of someone not wanting her. Of people who are supposed to love her and say that they do leaving her behind. It's happened enough times, which is why when Nurys actually gets into relationships or becomes involved with someone to the point of them even being best friends, she gives her all to the cause. No half-assing nothing. It's also why she wasn't about admitting that her brother needed more than just her to deal with his bipolar depression; she still doesn't want to acknowledge that his past issues had anything to do with that and instead wants to believe that they happened because she wasn't there to watch out for him.
β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬
This is probably the most complicated relationship Nurys has and it sucks because one half of what would make it is dead. Nurys will call her mother selfish and pathetic in her head, while just telling everyone else that she's dead. She'll even admit her mom had an overdose. And she hates her for it - for leaving her to fend for herself in a world Christina knew was cold because she couldn't stay in it. However, as much as she resents her and gets aggravated at being compared to the older woman, can't no one talk shit about her mother except Nurys.
β§Aleixo Bonifacio || Biological Father || 43 || Undisclosed Locationβ§
At least Nurys acknowledges that her mother existed, feels a range of emotions for her. Her father has only warranted nothing but apathy. He was too selfish to let her and her brother go with Michelle when they could have, and then abandoned them when it felt like too much responsibility, particularly because at least one of the kids wasn't his. To this day, Nurys has no idea where he is and doesn't care to know. He'd only be coming for the sake of the money they could make off of her anyway.
β¦ Michelle DuBois || Godmother & Legal Guardian || 41 || Founder and Head Stylist of DuBois Couture Hairβ¦
This is the only other complicated relationship Nurys has outside of the ones with her brother and mother. Her father's is rather simple; she has no love for him in her heart anymore. With Michelle, it's different. On the one hand, Nurys appreciates her. When Nurys ran away for a year with Ivan, they came to find Michelle and Michelle took them in with tears of relief in her eyes and love in her heart. She gave them their own bedrooms, which was a luxury neither had ever known. She clothed them, fed them, and when the law came after them for having run away, she fought to keep them and got them into a rather impressive institution,if Constance's legacy is anything to go by. And she supports Nurys' desire to get into the industry and has even let her meet a few of her high-end clients who can help her out in the long run. At the same time, Nurys remembers being taken from Michelle's care and Michelle having done literally nothing, at least in Nurys' mind, to get them back. There's also her issue with authority in general to consider, but she does care about the older woman. Even if she's become the main contributor to Michelle's development of gray hair and frayed nerves.
β§Jada DuBois || Godsister || 20 || Part-time stylist at DuBois Couture Hair & Cosmetology Studentβ§
Because Nurys never got to meet Michelle's son, who also happens to be Katiana's father, the only DuBois child she knows is Jada and the two of them have gotten pretty damn close in the three years that Nurys has been in New York. Jada is the only one allowed to do Nurys' hair outside of Nurys herself.
β¦ Ivan Johnson || Half-Brother || 16 || St. Jude's Studentβ¦
This is probably the second most complicated relationship she has simply because of dependency Ivan and Nurys have when on one another. He needs her strength and, even though she won't ever say it, she needs his need of her. Needs to have someone to protect so that when she does her more nefarious doings,
no one can say without a doubt that it was inherently selfish because she's doing it for their survival. No one has looked out for the two of them better than she has and perhaps she should learn that she doesn't always have to do everything in her power to keep him safe when they finally have an adult in their lives, but that protectiveness and possessiveness has been too deeply ingrained into her core for it to just go away.
β§Katiana DuBois || Play-Cousin || 2 || Currently ruling the loft β§
Nurys can stare directly at Katiana as she cries without an expression on her face or shrug when someone asks where the toddler escaped to in the rather spacious loft, but at the end of the day, Katiana will be held eventually or at least be made to stop crying, and her location will always be known. This is probably one of the purest loves Nurys knows and she can deny it all she wants in the toddler's face, but Nurys feels nothing but adoration for Kat.

15 Washington Street Brooklyn, NY : Former Humphrey Residence
Seven years ago, upon the commercial success of DuBois Couture Hair - along with aid from wealthier friends and clientele - Michelle DuBois purchased the loft along with the building it occupied in order to renovate and create what is now her home base in New York for both her wig and extension store, along with the salon that occupies the full first floor of the ten story. On the second floor, in accompaniment with the various wig and extensions she sells, Michelle's own hair care products which are cruelty, sulfate and paraben free, are sold. The second floor also holds the waiting room for clients who are awaiting their appointments or to be fitted into the schedule. The third floor up to the ninth floor are apartments she is able to rent out and earn income from, a collection of studio, two-family and three-family units. The tenth floor consists of the spacious three-bedroom residence complete with two full baths, a large kitchen to satisfy any home chef, and views of Manhattan from large floor to ceiling windows, and a fire escape balcony. It also comes with a rooftop terrace that Michelle keeps maintained for the pleasure of her family and tenants, complete with an assortment of lawn chairs, fake grass, a small garden, small tables with umbrellas, sofas, and strung-up lights.

β§HΙͺsα΄α΄ΚΚβ§
If things had been left up to Christina Johnson, both of her children would have the same father, they would have been set for life, and they both would have always been safe because she would have always been there for them. That is not what happened. Instead, Christina was an up-and-coming half of an R&B duo with her childhood friend, Michelle, and they both had been just young girls just trying to follow their dreams in the nineties. After performing at an event their agent got them booked for to headline for another more successful group of artists, Christina met Aleixo, and according to her, it was love at first sight. He was a Portuguese photography student who came to America under the belief that anyone could pull themselves up by their boot straps and Christina was charmed. He wasn't in the industry. However, she was and to Nurys, it always felt like her dad was attracted to the idea of big bucks more than he was to building a life with her mother.
Nevertheless, Christina became pregnant around the same time she and Michelle's careers were ready to pop off. They had been signed with Awful Records and recorded their first full album with the help of some Atlanta-based rappers and producers, even managing to snag one from New York for their first music video. They worked exceptionally hard to make it as successful as it had been at the time and there had been quick money in the beginning. With Christina's blues inspired vocals and the mad bars Michelle had for the era, they were bound to be a big hit. Nurys' birth only seemed like an addition to everything for Christina. Sure, she might have had to send her to Michelle's mother some nights, like Michelle did with her son, so that they could go to late night gigs and schmooze with the best of them, but she wasn't a bad mom. However, what ended up happening - because of them being one of the first successful acts for Awful Records and such was the case for plenty of artists who put out bangers - was that once their tracks stopped being considered so mainstream, the demand for something newer and better couldn't be met, not when Christina's partying lifestyle consisted of hard drugs and alcohol that she and her boyfriend had both gotten into it.
By the time Nurys was two, her parents fought over anything and nothing. A lot of the times, she was being cared for by Michelle, the only one who remained optimistic during that time. They went back and forth, though, between staying at a motel Christina knew the manager at, and with Michelle's mother because of how frustrated the older woman would get with having so many mouths to feed and so little income. Soon enough, Aleixo left without warning and in retaliation, Christina slept with a man whose name she swore she forgot the night before. Nurys never believed her, not from the face she made whenever Nurys or Aleixo asked, but then Aleixo returned. He promised that he wouldn't hold it against her mother for what happened, even after she wound up pregnant, but Christina had to promise to not use anymore. In turn, he'd get a better job, stop drinking, and they could all be a family again. That lasted all of two years and before they knew it, Christina's addiction reared its ugly head when she was hit with postpartum depression, Aleixo had started drinking by the time Ivan turned one, and Nurys grew up just a little faster than she should have had to for her little brother's sake.
Despite Michelle wanting to take him to court to contest his claim, at the end of the day, at least Aleixo had a job. At least, Aleixo didn't have too much of a record whereas Michelle had been to jail for five years before Christina had ever met him. At least, Aleixo's mother - and Nurys still never knew much about her father's family other than the little tidbits of Portuguese he taught her - wasn't the one who claimed his child, whereas that was Michelle's case right there. Plus, his name was on both of the birth certificates. So, he moved the kids to his one-bedroom apartment in Athens and told himself (and them) that things would be alright. However, there was a huge difference between caring for yourself and caring for yourself and two kids, and with no aid in dealing with his own demons, Aleixo was dropping the kids off six months later with the state. Nurys doesn't remember what she said to him past all of Ivan's crying, but she did recall the tears in her father's eyes. She hopes that she told him she hated him and wished he was the one she had to see die.
By the time Nurys turned thirteen, she had been through four foster homes and surprisingly enough, only two of them were bad. As much as people hate hearing it, at the end of the day, a lot of the individuals who adopted children or claimed to want to provide them a better home, didn't actually want the kid. They just wanted the paycheck that came with the kid, which could be all types of great if you spread it right and didn't waste it. She had only one semi-loving home and there was only so much love one could garner from her when you're ready to give her away when you finally get to have the child you once thought your body was not able to produce. With that being said, a lot of Nurys' rearing and growth came from the streets and the people she met there. The "ghetto" never failed to lure her in; if Nurys didn't already live there, best believe she found her way and that was where she was most comfortable, to say the least. She became a hassle for at least one of her families, but at some point, Nurys stopped caring. She learned lessons in relationships a young girl like her never should have gotten into, particularly an abusive one that landed her in the hospital once. She learned the tricks of the streets, learned how immediately little black girls like her started being sexualized and how she could use it to her advantage, how to fight, how to steal, and how to hustle to get what she wanted. It wasn't the best thing in the world, teachers worried when she happened to come to school, but she made a promise to her baby brother when they were separated. She would always find a way to find him and they would be together again. And Nurys is nothing if not a woman of her word.
Nurys was just about to turn sixteen when she took the money she had hidden from her then foster mother - she had honestly a good hundred or two from her, but Nurys didn't bother feeling bad since the woman told the kids point-blank that she only wanted them for the money as long as the kids looked like they were clothed and fed, so it was only Nurys getting her due - and ran away. She had gotten out of her case manager on accident that Ivan's last known location was in Washington D.C, Michelle's old neighbors said she had moved up to New York along with showing her Michelle's success via social media, and knew what she had to do. Ivan was at school when Nurys found him and didn't hesitate to come with her in the stolen vehicle they ditched the second they got to a bus station. To this day, other than a few shared tidbits that randomly occurred, the siblings never discuss what actually happened in their individual foster homes. They do acknowledge their shared insomnia on the nights that they are plagued by them. It took them about a week to find Michelle and it was probably the first time in the long time Nurys felt such an abundance of unconditional love.
Michelle had not been able to find them. She wasn't allowed to know their locations to check on them and nothing that she sent to Aleixo was ever returned. Nurys figured that he died in a ditch somewhere. The older woman wasn't too happy to know that Nurys had missed an entire year of school in trying to get to Ivan and then to her, but once she had her, Michelle made plans. It was a vicious battle with the state, especially since Ivan was technically kidnapped, but with the strings Michelle's friends in high places were able to pull for her, she was allowed to keep both with the condition that they both finish school and she had to contend with monthly check-ups on their well-being. Michelle feared their imminent rejection into St. Jude's and Constance, though Ivan was the one who was immediately accepted on a full scholarship. That was how good his test scores were, though he had to take summer school for that first year. Nurys, on the other hand, would have to do summer school every year because the schools she attended hadn't really kept her in line with the current curriculum, not to mention the fact that Nurys skipped frequently. Of course, Constance and St. Jude's were skeptical about their admittance due to the kids' backgrounds, but again, Michelle may not have the billions upon billions that other families do, but what she had was a long clientele list and a good reputation in New York, along with a rather impressive middle class income with splurges. Nurys likes to factor in that she slept with the headmistress' son once she found out who he was, but eventually, they were both accepted with only small stipulations.
But Nurys' goal is still music and keeping her promise to her mother. She may not talk well of the woman nor mention that promise, but it remains as her number one future goal. Michelle might push for to care more for her education and Nurys humors her by not skipping frequently, and not painting the halls as black as her soul, but Nurys knows what she wants. And she figures New is the best place to get it, or at least get the jump start she needs. She just thinks having a little fun along the way, much to the chagrin of both Michelle or the faculty of Constance.
