Introduction
The Kage no Tsuki. The Moonshadow mansion. The citizens of the small city of Tamayori, about two hours’ drive outside of Tokyo, know it to be a place of wonder and mystery. So far as they are aware, no one has ever stepped in beyond the mansion’s wooden fence, not even so far as the stone paths of the traditional gardens that surround the ancient building. It is a world separate from the stream of time, a house of wood-and-paper, of scrolls and tatami matting and gardens and covered walkways. A house out of some historical drama… and the people living within it are even more a mystery.
All beautiful, charming (most of the time), reserved, intelligent, accomplished, high-end citizens, and no one knows anything about them. They can match the face to the name, they can whisper about their habits at school, what classes they take, what teams they are on, but no one knows what they are really like. No one, in the history of the occupation of Moonshadow, has been able to get one of them to talk about themselves. No one knows where they came from, why they came here, or even erally when they came here. And it is a good thing that they do not. The Moonshadow dwellers are as much outside the flow of time as their antiquated home.
Vampires.
For centuries Moonshadow remained unoccupied, but about ten years ago a young man moved in. He brought one child with him, but over time more and more of those children collected. Now he – Hotarushi Suisei – lives in Moonshadow mansion with his sons. What they do there, few people know. Those who do often wish that they did not.
Suisei and his children are largely peaceful, civilized vampires. They permit themselves to hunt only one night of each month, the night marked by the new moon. Every other night they survived on human food laced with blood from packets donated by the nearest hospital. In trade for these donations, the Moonshadow children and their “father” do all that they can to help the humans battle against the less civilized members of their own races. Vampires pitted against vampires for the good of mankind – it sounds sort of silly, in a way, but it’s not. When you turn on your own kind, you tend to make a lot of enemies.
The Moonshadow is a relatively new clan of civilized vampires. They have yet to clash with anyone truly powerful, yet to make any serious enemies. So far they have killed only the true rogue vampires, the ones who have lost their minds to blood and would, by vampire law, have to be killed anyways. Te time is coming quickly, however, and Suisei can sense it. The time is drawing nearer – when one of them will make a wrong move, and the war on Moonshadow will begin.
Below is a list of truths and lies about the vampires in this particular story.
• Vampires burn in the sunlight – False, at least in a manner of speaking. While their skin is very fair and burns easily, they will not die from it. They just have to wear sunscreen, or long-sleeves and hats. Their eyes, too, are highly sensitive, and the bright light bothers them. Thus, the common addition of shades.
• Vampires hate garlic – False, sometimes, true others. Their sensitive noses can be offended by too much of the strong smell, but it will not really repel them, and if it is well-concealed in Italian foods it can be quite delectable.
• Vampires fly – False again. They can run very fast, and in some cases may be able to jump fairly high, but fly? Nope.
• Vampires sleep in coffins – That is a matter of choice in style, and can not be generalized to all vampires.
• Vampires turn into bats – Yeah, no. Not a chance.
• Vampires can be killed by a wooden stake – A wooden stake through the heart will put them down, sure, but unless it is made of Bloodroot it is not going to kill them. A staked vampire, Bloodroot or not, can be revived with the proper rituals. The only sure way to kill a vampire is to behead it, and then burn it. You don’t even have to behead it first. It’s just easier, that way, to make sure they don’t beat the fire out.
• Vampires can make others into vampires – True. All it takes is a bite, and a little of their own blood drunk by the victim, and humanity is lost.
• Vampires can lose their minds – True. If not properly raised and cared for by their creator, or by another fully matured vampire, young vampires can lose themselves to their thirst and become mindless monsters.
• Vampires never age – False, but true. Vampires remain in their prime of life. They will age until they are in their twenties – whether they were born vampire, or bitten – and then they will simply stop. They will never naturally die.
• Vampires are afraid of crosses – True. Some vampires can tolerate their presence, others can not, but any vampire will burn if touched by a cross. A silver one is the worst. The touch of a silver cross will leave a nice cross-shaped scar in the vampire’s skin which will not fade for years – this is the vampire hunter’s main method of branding a vampire for better tracking. Of course, this does not mean that some vampires are not religious. It just means they aren’t up there hugging the cross.
• Vampires have special abilities - Vampires are all very strong and very fast. They have extremely heightened senses, and heal at a rapid pace (cuts vanish in a matter of seconds). They will not develop other abilities until they are several centuries old.
There will be no reservation of characters, nor is this a first-come-first-served RP. The number of children is not limited to those listed below, and so if I like your character they will be accepted regardless of the number of positions filled.
