Age:

22

Sex:

Female

Height:

5' 4"

Weight:

125 Lbs

Body Type:

Mesomorph

Voice Type:

Alto

Weapon Preference:

|| Somewhat skilled in hand to hand combat ||

|| She prefers blades, so knives and daggers are her game ||

Personality:

At first glance she comes off as rude, cold hearted, selfish, and thick headed. But once you gain her trust and break through the wall, you'll see that she is rather kind hearted and undyingly loyal to those she sees fit. Riley tends to use smooth talking and lying to her advantage, usually to get her way, but also if it means her and others survival. But in simpliest terms, she is very, very guarded. She has built up walls as a way of not only as a means of self preservation, but as a way to see if someone is worth keeping around, or just be on her way.

Her three most noticable traits, are that she is very skeptical of others, defensive, and somewhat scared, tending to keep herself at a distance, making sure that if the other person were to make a sudden move, she could try to easily counter in a defensive manner, due to her upbringing by her father. Teaching her to always keep her defenses up, as someone could easily use her vulnerability against her. But the counter part to that, meaning the harder to disypher traits, is that she is very caring, loyal, and even to a certain degree, very clingy. Meaning that if you manage to get passed her defenses and gain her trust, she wil be more vulnerable, but to a point. And that is due to her mother and sister, they always taught her that no matter how bad the world had gotten, that she always had to let herself be human, and let her emotions take control of her every now and then. That it was okay to smile and laugh, and even sometimes cry, and that is one of the things she always carries around with her, the memory of no matter what, you have to remain human.

Aside from her cold exterier, she is actually a very vulnerable, and caring person. Once you can somehow gain her trust and loyalty, as well as time, you'll see that she's really a sweet, kind, selfless, protective, determined, loyal, and good hearted person. She just can't bear to lose anyone else, so she chooses to keep to herself unless it's someone she has a close bond to, then you'll know who she really is, if you're lucky enough to get the chance. If you manage to get to spend alone time with her, after gaining her trust, the real Riley will come out a little. She will be kind, sarcastic, make jokes, and even occasionally smile. And if she does smile, consider yourself lucky, as she hasn't smiled since the day her sister passed. But while in the company of two or more, she will remain guarded, and somewhat distant, but will tend to make jokes to ease the awkwardness that she may feel, as she never felt truly comfortable in groups. And while she is alone, she tends to get lost in her thoughts, mainly when life was what you could consider 'good'. Mainly with her family, her sister in particular. She'll sometimes think of jokes that she and her sister had, and will occasionally crack a smile due to it. She also tends to hum a soft melody that her mother used to sing to her and her siblings, and if someone calls her out on it, she will immediately grow quiet, and try to deny the fact that she was humming to herself.

Others will occasionally question her on why she's as guarded as she is, and her answer is always the same. To her, there is no need to get attached to someone if you are only going to eventually lose them. It's also why she has no interest in relationships, she knows that if she were to ever fall in love with someone, and the time comes for them to die, or have to be put down, she knows she wouldn't be able to. Which also leads into the next thing, what if someone she was traveling with were to get bit, stuck in a trap or receive a severe injury? She would remember what he father told her, no hesitations, no second thoughts. It's either her life, both of their lives, or the loss of a limb. She would immediately apologize, and try to help them calm down, and then proceed to do what needs to be done. But if she thinks it's a lost cause, she wouldn't leave them to die, or be eaten, she would do the merciful thing and painlessly put them down the best she could.

Meanwhile, in combat she is ruthless and in a way, slightly detached. At a young age she learned how to kill and fight for her life, not only infected but humans as well. While killing humans isn't her preferred way of handling things, she will take another life if it means her getting what she needs. As she has had to live by herself for many years now, she is accustomed to living alone, and defending for herself, even though she does well on her own and prefers it, she wouldn't be against being with a group. Allbiet she wouldn't get attached to anyone, as it isn't easy for her to lose more people.

Biography:

Riley was born in Orange County, California, in the later part of January 2022, making her birth only nine years after the initial outbreak that took out most of humanity. She was the youngest of four siblings, her two brothers who were the oldest, as they were identical twins, and then her sister, who was four years older than her at the time of her birth. Her birth was an unplanned occurence, making her more of a burden than she would have been otherwise. While her motherand sister loved her nonetheless, the opposite could have been said about her father and brothers. While they did love her though, she was only seen as an extra burden and another mouth to feed by her father. Her brothers not wanting to disapoint their father, pretended to have the same outlook on her, while in actuality they did love her very much, which proved to be seen later on. As the years went on, her father did show that he cared for her, but only in small areas, as for when he trained her.

He did go easy on her, but taught her to tough it out, as others outside their settlement wouldn't be so sparing, and would kill her without a second thought. Her father taught her, as well as her siblings that if any of them were to get bit, that they would need to immediately put them down, if their was any hesitation, they would be killed. As no one else would be sparing, if they were to get bitten by the infected. So at an early age, she was taught to kill, regardless of her feelings and emotions. If anything, she was raised to have no emotions, as those would cause hesitations and moments of weakness that could be easily used against her. Which, eventually proved to be of proof. As one night, when she was twelve, their settlement, which was in the southern side of Orange County, had been invaded by a large sworm of infected. They had taken down the left wall, causing several clickers and runners to easily over take the unexpected occupents.

As she and her sister were suddenly awoken by their father telling them to hide, as the wall had been taken down. They hid in a hidden room under the floor, which only had a latch that was on the floor. As the two girls remained hidden, they heard their father and brothers yelling, and heard something about their mother. Riley tried to get a better look, but her sister held her back. As it felt like hours, Riley couldn't do anything but listen to the sound of her own heart beating, as the continued sound of yelling from her brothers and father, and the clicking that was all too familiar to her. She looked up at her sister, and before she could say anything, the door to their hiding spot was spung open, and their brother Thomas quickly pulled them up, not saying a word as he was covered in blood. As they were silently led out of the house, Thomas was quickly pulled backwards, all the while screaming as Clickers quickly over came him. Riley tried to do something, but her sister, Sam, kept pulling her along. As she looked back, she didn't see her either her other brother, Lukas, or her father, figuring the worst, she accepted that their fate had finally come. As the duo made their way out of Orange County, they managed to make it to Lost Angeles. Where they moved from building to building, as their previous place was comprimised by the infected, or proved to not be safe enough.

As the years went on, she and her sister continued to move to different sectors of the city. Only staying there for a few weeks at least, and months the latest, never staying in one spot for too long. Eventually the day came, when they were on their weekly supply run, Riley had run into a room full of infected, quickly finding a hiding spot, managing to hide from the Clickers. As the infected slowly moved out, so did Riley, emerging from her hiding spot. As she exited the room, she ran into Sam. The two slowly and as quietly as they could, exited the empty apartment building, only for two Clickers to stumble upon them. In the bloody fight, Sam had been bitten unknown to Riley. They made their way back to their shelter, with only a small fraction of supplies, Sam looked at Riley, and handed her a gun silently. Riley didn't understand why, only for Sam to show her the bite on her arm. Through tears and sobs, Riley begged her not to, not wanting to have to kill her only family member left. But Sam reminded her what they were taught, to not let feelings or hesitations keep them from killing.

Sam soon broke into a fever, as Riley could do nothing but sit and watch, as they talked about their favorite memories, Riley silently put the gun to Sam's head, and without any warning, she mercifully put her down. Since that day, three years ago Riley has gone from group to group, eventually finding that it would be better for her to be on her own. Which she has been for the past year now, slowly making her way across California, without a clue as to where she may find herself. Perhaps with another group, or perhaps, as an infected herself.

So begins...

Location: Old Interstate 80

Down the long and semi-deserted roads occupied now only by abandoned cars and occasional animals making homes in said abandoned cars, one functional van drove along at a gingerly pace. Inside was the driver, a middle-aged man named Horner. Somewhat of a talker before he got in the van, but once inside he calmed up and would not speak unless he pulled over to get out and take a piss.

Passengers included three men and two women. One man was older, in his mid 40's, with the classic salt and pepper around the temples. Not a bad looking man, but well aged from all his years of hopelessness and sorrow. Another man was younger, though only slightly so. Mid to late 30's, maybe, and already losing his hairline. He was a bit more gruff with a near one inch thick beard gracing his face. With darkly tanned skin and ragged clothes, it was clear he was a lonely vagabond who had all but given up on life and was now here only for the promise of a fresh start at this new settlement.

One of the women was older as well, mid to late 40's by the look of it with graying hair and a well aged face. She too had seen her share of hopelessness and sorrow, but seemed a bit more chipper now than she may have been in years past. She actively conversed with the others and seemed open to discussion and conversation more so than her male counterparts.

The final pair were much younger. Early 20's both, with fresh and vibrant skin from years of growing up in settlements and cities where they had plenty of human interaction and socialization to keep their minds and hearts fresh. They had obviously seen their share of tragedy, but overall were quite healthy. They sat side by side with the young Japanese woman's hand resting on the young Caucasian man's thigh, and his hand resting gently on top of hers.

Lovers, clearly.

They were conversing with the others about infected encounters from the past and who they had lost to those wretched creatures, as well as stories of how they got even with the twisted and distorted beings. But soon enough, the van began to slow to a crawl and Horner, the driver, pulled over and stepped out.

"Time to get out, everyone." He said firmly.

Everyone piled out of the van and lined up, preparing for a checkpoint inspection which had become very commonplace along these stretches of old highway. And the reason was simple: they were nearing their destination.

Checkpoints usually were stationed within ten miles of any establishment that was along a major highway, if not slightly closer. There they stationed soldiers with specialized equipment to scan the biomass of the people who passed through to determine whether or not they carried the infection. Since this group had been together in the van for almost forty eight hours, they knew nobody was infected and all carried themselves with heads held high as they approached a gateway where soldiers waited to scan them with rifles at the ready in case someone tried anything.

"Line up here," one soldier ordered.

Everyone did as instructed, and the scans began. A handheld device with a red laser was flashed onto their necks over their carotid artery, scanning the flesh and blood within for signs of infection. The first man was scanned... Nothing. The second man was scanned... Nothing. The first woman was scanned... Nothing.

And then Richard and Kasumi were scanned.......................... Nothing.

"They're clear. Go on ahead." The soldier said.

The gateway was opened, and everyone piled into the van and continued on their way. While doing so they joked about how nerve wracking it was at every checkpoint, because even if you knew you were innocent it only took one false reading for the soldiers to kill you. They wouldn't scan you twice. They would kill you just to be safe.

Everyone in this van had seen that happen at least once.

About thirty minutes later, they diverted from Old Interstate 80 taking Old Route 50 into Folsom, through Cameron Park, and into Placerville.

Placerville used to be a wonderfully small, quiet community city before the infection took hold. Everything was close by. The people were friendly. There was plenty to do despite how small it was. And it was in a beautifully wooded area with plenty of wildlife and natural beauty to behold. A far cry from the dull gray cities of more populated zones like San Jose where Richard grew up.

In Placerville, a new settlement had been built and was now receiving what was only its seventh round of new occupants which included everyone in this van. The Placerville Settlement, as it was being called, currently had only 88 people, including the 5 in this van who were going to become new occupants. Within the next few weeks, it had plans to reach what was its current occupational capacity of 100 occupants. After it reached that milestone, it would seek to bring the community together to expand the border so it could slowly bring in more and more people.

This settlement, thanks to its rich soil and bountiful wildlife, was seeking to become self-sustaining if it could reach approximately 500 people within the next few years. They had the space, soil, and natural supplies to farm, ranch, and maintain their own existence without outside help which would be a Godsend if they could make it happen.

The only problem...

Infected patrolled this area regularly, so nightly skirmishes were common. They let everyone know about that in their invitations, that about once every four to five days they would have night time skirmishes with infected, as they usually traveled in small groups and swept through.

Richard and Kasumi didn't mind that reality. It was commonplace for them now to face the infected on a semi-consistent basis. Since they knew the relative schedule, they would be prepared for such a life style without too many issues.

As the van pulled up to the gates of the settlement, fully walled off from the outside world, they were scanned one more time for good measure before being allowed inside.

The place was small, as one would expect for a place only expecting 100 occupants. There were what seemed to be four separate mini-communities within the space.

The "Flank" community, which was at the rear of the establishment. It consisted of roughly 12 houses which housed a current total of around 14 occupants out of a max capacity of 20. There was space there for anyone who wanted to be there. The only downside was that the East side, which was the Flank side, was usually the first to know when infected came through as their travel route was usually East to West. But if you didn't mind that, then it was a comfortable spot.

The "Fore" community, the community closest to the entrance gate where the group was now, had a max capacity of around 20 people and had a total current occupancy 11 occupants.

The "Point" community, on the North side, was at max capacity with a total of 30 occupants. So there was no room for anyone there at present.

And lastly, the "Fall" community, on the South side, was at 28 out of 30 occupants.

Richard and Kasumi discussed with the others, and they decided that they would take the last two spots in the Fall community. They had one house left with one bedroom (double bed, conveniently enough), kitchen, living room, one bathroom, one storage closet, and an empty room which Richard already had pans to turn into a fitness room for Kasumi and himself to practice and train together.

With their location settled, Richard and Kasumi bid their travel companions farewell and made their way to their new home. They met with the local "landlord", or at least the man who passed for a landlord by having them sign for the house, and then moved right in. Taking their time to familiarize themselves with their new home, they set their belongings in the bedroom and toured the place together before resting in the bedroom for about an hour or two.

By the time they woke up from their nap, it was twilight. About 7pm with the sun fading over the horizon. They decided this would be a good time to walk around and get to know some of the people in the area, so they left their house, locked it up nice and tight, and took a stroll through the settlement to see who they could introduce themselves to.

Riley

It was early morning as the sun began to rise, making a soft sun beam peirce into the curtain covered window, of its occupant. In the small, single person bed, lay a dirty blonde, haired, dark jade green eyed female, who was slowly starting to awaken. She rubbed her eyes as she slowly and groggily sat up, yawning all the while, "Fuckin' hell..." she said to no one in particular, as the sun blinded her slightly. She stretched as she slumped out of bed, throwing her feet off the side of the bed, her feet landing on the cold, wooden floor. She stretched one more time for good measure, hearing a satisfying pop as her lower back and neck cracked. She looked around her small room, not yet adjusted to the small layout, as she had just made it to the small settlement known as "Placervile" the night prior. It had been about two years since the last time she had been around a settlement, not to mention many people in general. But as she didn't want to keep moving on the night prior, she took up residence, not planning to stay very long.

As she told the man who she had signed the papers for, she planned to stay there for a few days, to a week at most. As she wasn't one to stay in one place for too long, or even at all really. As she had become a traveler, if you could call it that in past recent years. She had only even stayed there as she had killed a Clicker as it had tried to attack two people the previous night, a mother and her child who Riley guessed was ten years old at most. The two gave her their thanks and mentioned the settlement they were going to, and told her she should consider it. She had taken residence in the last house in the Fore sector, as it was not only in a good spot of the settlement, but it had available placement. She had chosen the small, one story floor house, which had enough room with only a single bed, a dresser, a small closet, a table and chair, a small bathroom, and three windows, her bed was against the farthest wall to the east side of the house. She walked over to her backpack and took out her clothing, she put on a shirt and her jacket, her old, worn out pair of black jeans, and combat boots, that she had managed to find on her last supply run. She picked up her trusty old, black curved daggers, and pet them loosely on her belt, soon following suit with her old survival tact knife that her sister had gifted her. She got her hair tied up, and looked around if she was forgetting anything else, she nodded as she walked over to the door, without forgetting the house key, and locked the door behind her. She decided to take a look around the settlement, to not only familiarize herself with the surroundings, and places of escape if the need were to arise, but as to possibly find some food.

As hours had passed, Riley had gotten her fill of food, as the same woman from the previous night had called her over to her house, offering her some of their food, Riley accepted. The woman, who introduced her name as Ann invited Riley into their current home, or what one would call a home. Riley, not being one to be rude, especially after being offered food and kindness, accepted the invitation. She sat down on the small couch, as Ann had prepared them both breakfast, it was a humble display of a small can of beans, and day old wheat bread, which Riley happily accepted and just as happily devoured, as the last time she had food was...three days ago? At least that's what it felt like to the girl. The two made small talk, as Rebecca, Ann's daughter was fast asleep. Ann explained that they had been on the road for several weeks, never getting enough sleep or a safe place to stay for more thana few days. Riley understood that, as most people would be able to. Before Riley and Ann knew it, it was already around late afternoon, Riley thanked Ann for her kindness and invitation, and said goodbye to her and her daughter, thanking her again for the food and made her way out of their house. Riley thought to herself for what to do next, perhaps help with security? No, they had people to help with that. Walk along the settlement more? She nodded to herself as there was nothing better to do, and without knowing it, she had eventually made her way around the full settlement, with the Fall sector being the last one for her to familiarize herself with.

Riley

As Riley eventually made her way through the Fall sector, she stopped to catch her breath and to just relax, slightly. She propped herself up against one of the walls, and just looked around, slightly from admiring the evening sky, but mainly to see how safe and secure the secured settlement really was. As she stood there, a young, short blonde haired and green eyed, fair skinned male slowly walked up to her. She eyed his suspiciously, keeping her guard up as well as keeping her distance. He obviously noticed her reflexive behaviour as she placed her hand on her hip, by her knife that she always had at the ready. "H-hey, I mean you no harm. I uh..just saw you standing there, and you don't look familiar. My name is Zack." he said as he outstretched his hand, looking up at him curiously. She kept her hand by her side, keeping her eyes on him. "My name's Riley..I don't plan on staying here for very long, so don't try to become my friend, got it?" she said rather coldy as she stood back up and started walking, never letting her guard down as she turned her back on the male.

"Hey now, what's with the hostility? I only tried being nice to you." He said as he placed his hand on Riley's shoulder, which caused her to automatically react, and grab him by the arm and use his clear sign of being distracted as leverage, and flipped him over onto his back on the ground with relative ease, doing so flawlessly. She looker down at him while he gasped for air as the impact with the ground left him breathless. Rule one, don't ever, and I mean ever touch me like that or ever again. And second, you're lucky I didn't just kill you. Now, leave me alone or next time I will not be so nice." she turned her back on him and walked away, following the worn down path. Zack stood up, breathing heavily as he exclaimed, "You're a crazy, bitch!!" which in turn Riley lifted her hand and gave him the finger, a small smile on her face.

She continued walking down the path as it eventually split off into three more, obviously them leading to the other sectors, but it was more obvious as small, crude hand made signs pointed to the different areas. She followed the one that led her home, being able to see now thanks to the use of the natural light from the setting sun, and the newly lit torches that the people on patrol were igniting. Eventually she made it back to her house, she stepped onto the small creaky porch, pulling out the key that was in her pocket and unlocked the door, walking into the house and closing the door behind her. She strode over to her small bed and sat down, the old matress making a small creak under her weight. She sighed at the sound and laid back, only hearing another creak as she did so. She mindlessly laid there, until sleep soon over took her and she soon gave into the land of nightmares that was considered sleep to her.

Location: Placerville Settlement

The night had come swiftly.

The sun's protective rays had long since disappeared from the land as darkness overcame the world at large beneath a moonless sky. Aside from the spotlights shining into the forest manned by soldiers, the world was silent and asleep.

Richard and Kasumi were asleep in the living room, having fallen asleep on the couch next to one another.

On the wall, at the far Northeast watch tower, two soldiers were chatting.

"See anything?"

"No."

"Mm."

"You almost sound disappointed."

"I kind of am. I want to shoot a few more of those fucks before I move to a new settlement next week."

"Keep your pants on."

"Yeah, yeah."

"We had a run in with the little shit kickers two days ago. We should be getting more of them any time now."

The two stopped talking for a minute and watched the forest as they slowly swept it with the search light.

Out in the distance, a quiet echo of a human-like scream reverberated through the air.

"What was that?"

"SHH!"

The two went silent, and the light stopped moving. They didn't dare move a muscle, and the entire lineup of soldiers along the Northeastern wall froze in place. Nobody dared so much as twitch. The more noise created, the worse their chances for avoiding the wandering groups of infected.

The scream grew louder, and the soldiers began using hand gestures to communicate.

Weapon safety's off. Eyes up. Short, controlled bursts.

It would be almost two weeks before the next ammunition delivery, and the settlement was already running low due to a mishap with one of their ammo storage units which was accidentally ignited by a stray flamethrower during one of the encounters last week. Black burn marks in the grass and dirt around the newly rebuilt storage shed were indicators of what happened.

Everyone kept their eyes up as the screams grew louder, and then the words everyone was dreading were uttered at last.

"CONTACT!!"

The Warning Alarm began blaring at full volume to wake the entire settlement, and nobody would be sleeping through this shrill warning siren. It wasn't long after that when the first bullets began flying.

Richard and Kasumi jolted awake covering their ears as the siren blared once, twice, thrice, and then stopped. They hated that thing. It was the same everywhere, but it was a life line so they had to cut it some slack.

Richard raced into his room to find his bag where he quickly brought out and switched his shoes into reinforced steel-souled and steel-toed boots and reinforced gloves with metallic coverings over the knuckles. Kasumi fetched her katana, placing its scabbard on her waist via a specially made belt clip and holding the blade down and away from herself until it was ready for use if need be.

The pair immediately exited their home and made their way to the center of the settlement where the inhabitants were asked to gather during times of emergencies. There was a large circular cage-like fence with reinforcements along its length in the form of strutted wooden planks and barbed wire. It was the settlement inhabitants last line of defense in the event of a breach. Richard and Kasumi made it to the cage and stood side by side just outside of its open gate as others ran into its protective embrace.

The pair intended to fight if a breach occurred, whereas most others sought safety and refuge within the cage.

The bullets were flying ferociously and screams of infected and the clicks of clickers were audible in the near distance as they watched how the soldiers fired in numerous directions. It indicated a much larger than normal group of infected had made it into the area.

Now it was just a matter of time before they found out, whether they liked it or not, if this settlement would see its second breach.

Riley

As hours passed, unknown to Riley, as she was in the world of dreams, or in her case a repeating nightmare that she had nightly, if she slept at all that is. Which is one reason as to why she hated sleep, not only was she vulnerable to the known dangers that was life, but also due to the fact that whenever she closed her eyes, whether for sleep or even just a moment's rest she would always return to an all too familiar memory. One she would always try to ignore if she was able to, or if she would be so lucky, it could all just be one big nightmare and that she would wake up any moment back home, with her family when life was what you could consider normal or even happy. But she wasn't so lucky, unfortunately. She tossed and turned in her sleep, as the memories were always far too real and always felt as if they were happening everytime. The scenes that always replay in her mind are quick glimpses of her mother's dead body being devoured by Clickers, her brother being pulled back into the house, his screams echoing from within, and then Sam...More specifically, when she put that bullet through the back of her unsuspecting sister's head as a merciful death.

As the latter memory had taken its residence in her mind, as the ever so haunting echo of the gun went off, she was suddenly awakened by what she realized were airhorns and sirens; which only ever meant one thing, a breach. The sound was so sudden, that it jolted her awake causing her to fall out of her bed, falling to the floor onto her back causing the wind to be knocked out of her for only a moment. Her reflexes and instincts kicked in and she scrambled to her feet, grabbing her backpack and putting it on, as well as frantically attaching her weapon belt to her waist. Thankfully she had fallen asleep fully dressed, as she had wasted enough time as is in her current state. She quickly ran out the door of the small house, almost breaking the door off the hinges as she opened it. "Holy....Fuckbuckets..." she cursed as she looked around, seeing all the residents in her sector running for safety and trampling others, the guards up on the towers firing in multiple directions, and the guards on the ground doing their best to direct people to the safe zones. As she passed by a group of survivors, she made eye contact with one of them, it was the boy from earlier who had placed his hand on her, and who called her a crazy bitch for defending herself in instinct. He gave her a death glare, but one of the guards motioned him along, although he never broke his gaze from Riley, who returned the look while giving him the quick flip of the finger, slowly following the guards as they were guided over to the safe zone. But as she didn't feel all that safe being around him, she decided to go to another area, one that had better defenses in her mind, and better access to an escape if need be.

The bullets continued flying in numerous directions as the soldiers fought frantically to control the oncoming rush of infected. You could always tell the size of the group from the amount of ammunition spent, and this group was exceptionally large given that most of the soldiers were rapidly running out of ammo and clips. They would have to start going into the reserves soon to deliver new clips to them if this kept up.

Sure enough, the all-horrifying word "BREACH" was screamed by soldiers atop the wall. All citizens were advised to get inside the cage for their own safety as the guards and soldiers all took up protected positions behind walls, cleverly placed traps, and pit falls to make quick work of the horde.

But the horde was too large this time. The pit falls filled up with infected who were torched with flamethrowers. And once the bodies piled too high the others sprinted right over them. Once they got over the pit falls, the barbed wire fences were next. Most of the infected got stuck on them and were quickly dispatched, but eventually the bodies stuck on the fence allowed others to get by while simply climbing other them like they had the bodies in the pits.

The soldiers had to retreat to safer locations to continue their protective efforts, but a few stray infected managed to break away and take unexpected routes through and around their defenses.

Richard and Kasumi, still near the entrance of the cage which was now around 98% capacity with the citizenry minus them and a small handful of others, held their ground. The first infected appeared around a building corner and began rushing the cage, only to be met by a swift slice of Kasumi's sword across the throat which distracted it long enough for Richard to kick it off its feet and to the ground where Kasumi drove the sword through its skull. Once removed from its cranium, she whipped the blade once to clean the blood from it. Richard walked a bit closer to her as the next infected walked around another building corner just ahead and rushed the pair.

Richard waited until it was with range before launching a spinning kick across its head sending it sprawling to the ground where Kasumi repeated the kill move from their previous victim. A stab through the skull, and it went still. Blade was removed, and it was time to prepare for the next.

They didn't have to wait long as a small group of infected began to come from the buildings and approach the cage.

But there was a silver lining... The bullets had all but stopped flying and the soldiers on the wall were rather calm and giving hand gestures to one another and their comrades down below. The onrush must have stopped, and now it was just the stragglers that remained.

If they killed of this bunch, they would be safe... For now.

"BREACH!!" was all that Riley needed to hear, and her heart somewhat stopped. Memories came flooding into her head of all the times that breaches had happened, especially the first one she ever experienced, the one that left her alone. She was somewhat in a daze, until she felt someone push her down, and looked up to see the one that had shoved her, it was the boy from earlier, Zack. She grunted as she pushed herself up to her feet, and walked up to him, "Way to go, asshole. And in a time like this? You deserve what will come to you, whenever it'll be." she said as she pushed past him, her shoulder forcefully pushing him aside as she made her way further on up to a better zone. But she stopped as she heard an all too familiar sound, she turned her head, to see him standing still, his head down, murmering something. She raised an eyebrow, eyeing him worridly, for him to suddenly jerk forwards at her, but before she could react, the sound of a gun shot went off, leaving the figure to crumble to the ground, lifelessly. She turned her head back from where the shot had come from, one of the guards had shot him down.

"Come along now. You're not from this sector but it's fine." the man in safety armor said as he gestured her to move on up in the ongoing chaos. She wordlessly nodded, but walked back to the body that had just been previously living, she rolled up the right sleeve of his jacket, to sure enough see a fresh bite mark, a good chunk of flesh was missing. She tisked in disgust, and revulsion, "Told you, asshole." she stood back up, but before she did, she quickly swiped his still working watch, and put it on, leaving the body alone besides from what she had taken.

Without realizing it, she had stumbled upon the Fall sector, only knowing that thanks to one of the signs. She was led to the safety zone by the man who had shot Zack. But before they reached the zone, a Clicker quickly ambushed them, jumping the guard, immediately ripping the man's throat out. Riley instinctively reacted, taking out her tact knife she kicked the Clicker down with ease as it was distracted, and easily inserted her knife into the cranium of the Clicker, making sure that she confirmed the kill she made sure to stab it three times. She panted heavily as she made the last stab, "Clear!!" she exclaimed as she slowly removed herself from the newly dead corpse that lay at her feet, dropping its lifeless corpse as she stood up. She made it a habit to always announce that she was not infected, as she had saved a man's life once, but he thought she was an infected and attempted to kill her, leaving her to always make it a habit to state her being free of infection after a kill. Two guards moved in close to her, she pushed up her sleeves and moved her hair to show that she indeed not infected, the men nodded and let her into the first layer of the safety zone in the Fall sector. Before she stepped in, she heard running, and more clicking, she quickly turned around, and in sync with her turn, she threw one of her throwing knives as the creature's head, making a perfect shot at the monster that was only five feet away from her, she nodded at the men who in turn nodded at her and kept up their guard, constantly scanning the area for more. As she made her way deeper into the safe zone, she managed to make short eyecontact with a man and a woman who had possibly witnessed both of the kills that had taken place, as they were closer to the entrance. She didn't say a word and simply gave a slight nod as she walked over to one of the bordered up corners, and kept her back slightly pressed up against the wall, as she cleaned her knife off from the previous Clicker's blood. Keeping her guard up all the while, as she heard more yelling from the guards and shots going off every now and then, as the herd was assumibly dwindling in bodies.

The shouting and screaming continued. Shin couldn't tell if the situation had been diffused or not because of all the confusion. He followed the guards who seemed to be trying to alleviate the chaos by trying to get everyone into a cage of some sort. Shin didn't really like tight spaces but it seemed like a much better alternative than being attacked by one of the infected. So, he decided to make his way inside. It was just as crowded as he expected. He still didn't feel safe. He couldn't tell if the fight was still raging or not. If the infected did make their way into the settlement, would they still be safe? Shin really hoped they would. He enjoyed the breakfast here quite a bit.

Richard and Kasumi stood fast by the entrance to the cage, ready and waiting if anymore infected should appear. But it was becoming more and more certain that this was now a losing battle. The soldiers were running out of ammo, fast, and the waves were not slowing down it seemed. The soldiers didn't stop using clip after clip, and before long it became clear that the onslaught was still high in force.

Richard looked to Kasumi, and she nodded to him in understanding.

Richard turned and looked at those who'd gathered inside the cage, and was despaired. Many of them would likely not live to see tomorrow if they stayed there.

Kasumi cupped Richard's hand in hers.

"Warn them, Richard. They can't stay there. Everyone has to leave that cage, now." She said.

He nodded.

Kasumi held her katana at the ready as one more infected penetrated the line through the buildings.

Richard, meanwhile, turned to the cage.

"The line isn't holding! Everyone out of the cage, now!!" He yelled several times.

Many of the horrified and paranoid within the cage barked at him to fuck off, that he didn't know what he was talking about, and that the waves were slowing because fewer infected made it through the buildings... But Richard knew better. He'd seen it before. The line was collapsing, allowing the waves to overwhelm and feed on the soldiers. The buildings would soon be bursting with infected, and the cage would be overwhelmed by them ere long.

"Last chance! Get out now!!" He yelled.

He ran to Kasumi's side as she hacked down the next infected, and the two of them began running towards the Southwestern gate. They dared not look back, but as Richard warned the buildings now began bursting with infected which poured around the corners, out of the windows, and through the doors towards the cage.

Not even a few seconds after she had gotten into the safety zone, she heard people yelling to get out, the man who she had made oh so very quick eye contact with to be exact. "My fuckin' luck, isn't it?" she said to herself as she pushed past her way through people, either being pushed by others, or pulled backwards by people who were trying to get out. As she finally got out, by forcefully shoving a boy about her age back, she gasped for air, only for a Clicker to spring on her, "It's what you get, fucker!" she heard a voice say to her, the boy who she had pushed called mockingly as he rushed by her, leaving her for dead. She grunted at his retort, and swiftly stabbed the Clicker in the head after a brief struggle, as it attempted several times to make bites at her face or neck. She tossed the body off of her and quickly got to her feet, and made a mad dash out of their. She managed to pass the couple she had seen earlier, and as she noticed a way out of one of the sides, she looked at them and motioned in a hurried tone, "Hurry! This way!" she exclaimed as she ran towards the exit. Only to see about a dozen other Clickers swarm in.

"Or not!" she yelled as she just as quickly turned tail and ran back a few feet, managing to keep the Clickers at bay as she managed to kill three of them by throwing one of her throwing knives at each of them. She ran off further down the southside, managed to literally run into a young, or at least her age, tall and what she assumed Asian male, slamming to the ground, "Oof, watch where you're going, idiot!" she yelled as she got back onto her feet, and forcefully picking him up and helping him start running again, allbeit she didn't exactly want to be with others, but at the moment it could help keep off the infected until she could be on her own again, as she always preffered.

Shin assumed the cage would be safe, I mean, that's kind of what they were advertising while shouting and all. But, just as luck would have it, as soon as he was shoved inside of it someone was screaming to get out of it. Shin wasn't one to disobey orders and was tempted to stay put. Less people in the cage meant more space for him and if he had more space with the inclusion of some safety then he'd be fine. But, it did seem like the cage was getting a bit too full and the sounds from beyond the barrier didn't indicate that the situation would calm down any time soon. Shin was about to make the conscious decision to move until the overwhelming amount of people that wanted to leave made it easy for him. Against his will, he was thrust out of the cage. Being trampled by a lot of people kind of hurt. It hurt a lot.

After mob was cleared, Shin ran in a random direction, hoping to find some safety. Just as luck would have it, there was breech. Clickers were lunging at people, having a grand ol' time. Unfortunately for Shin, he was having the opposite. Praying silently, Shin ran down the pathway hoping that there was an exit this way. Apparently, security hadn't been all too good. At least the food had lived up to standard. I guess ambition kills. Lost in thought and in sprint, Shin didn't notice a girl about his age until he slammed into her. Falling to the ground, Shin landed with a hard thud. She said some really mean words, even going so far o call him an idiot. Oh well, he didn't really have a choice but to follow her since she had a death grip on his hands. Since they were going to be buddies until they got out of this mess, Shin decided to break the ice. "Hi, I'm Shin. Shin Lee." Hopefully she wasn't as mean as the first impression made her out to be.

Richard and Kasumi stuck with the girl they had seen earlier who urged them to follow her. Clickers had blocked their path to the exit, forcing them to take a detour during which time the girl ran into another man of asian descent who introduced himself as Shin Lee.

Were they not running for their lives, Richard and Kasumi would have offered theirs as well.

But they were.

The road ahead of them opened up as they rounded another building, and they saw the exit up ahead with nary a clicker or infected in sight. Thankfully none showed up which allowed all four of them to exit the now overrun settlement and escape into the wilderness.

... Not exactly the safest place in the world, but it was safer than the settlement now.

Finally, after a few more minutes of running, the group was able to come to a stop and catch their breath. No infected were anywhere around, so for now they had a few moments of reprieve.

"Everyone okay?"

Kasumi nodded.

"I have blood all over me, but I'll live." Kasumi replied.

Great, Riley thought to herself. Now she was stuck with a group for now, consisting of an idiot who can't see where he's running, and could have gotten himself killed, and then a couple...At least they knew how to stay alive, for now anyway. Could be proved useful...maybe, she thought as she continued running from the bloodbath behind them. Eventually when they were far enough away, she slowed her pace to a quick walk, while keeping her witts and guard up, and stopped as the others did.

"Hey idiot-" Riley said as she looked over at the young male, "What did you say your name was? Shin? Not that I really care. But get this one thing in your head, watch where you're going. Always. And second, formalities don't really matter, no point in getting comfortable if you end up getting yourself killed." she said as she surveyed the area, keeping her eyes and ears open. She realized how rude and how much of an asshole she was, "I...I'm sorry. Just don't want to be around an idiot who almost got us both killed... And, it's Riley..." she said as she started walking again.

"And you, muscle man-" she said as she looked at the man in the presumed couple. "I'm fine. And will be better when I get away from a group again. Saw a station up ahead on my way here. If there's no infected near by, and it's not taken already, we can camp there until it's day break." she started walking again as she turned on her heel, back against the others, slowly separating herself from the rest of the group, too much talking for her for the meantime.
