The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 2 authors
The next part of the routine was to walk the line down the hall, grab a tray, ask for food (unless you were Anikas, then they just gave it to you), grab a beverage of your choice (water or milk), pick up plastic silverware (because you never trust a crazy person with the real deal), find a seat, eat. Anikas always sat at the same spot every day, back in the corner the last table. He sat with a group of other people. One who had been diagnosed with narcolepsy with borderline cataplexy. Another was diagnosed with trichotillomania, something that Anikas never really enjoyed eating around. However, he dealt with it.
His routine was followed by picking up dishes, returning them to the washing station, leave, go outside. He hated going outside, for the most part at least. He just hated to walk out of a pair of doors and see fences. Like he was some caged rabid animal. He did enjoy the feeling of fresh air in his lungs and dusting his skin. Especially on rainy days, those were always his favorite. Nature's shower. It was the most revitalizing feelings having raindrops land on your skin. Especially on windy days when they would sting.
They were always outside for precisely thirty minutes before they were directed back inside to go about daily activities. This was when Anikas would take the time to draw the doctors and nurses, sometimes the patients. He preferred the people that left the building every day after a shift. They were always the ones who changed the most. Sometimes their hair would be different colors, sometimes they were clearly more exhausted than other days. Patients, on the other hand, were always the same. Always miserable with a blank drained stare on their faces. They always seemed to follow the same routine until they have had enough. Then sometimes the weaker ones would lash out and react dramatically. Countless times he had seen people be hauled away to spend a night in the padded room at the end of the hall.
Anikas has never had the pleasure of that experience. He had also seen people who had gone so stir crazy with themselves start to do really bizarre things. For instance, there was always one woman who would lick the backs of her hands like a cat. That was the telltale sign that the woman was teetering on the edge of sanity. Another patient would just start to repeatedly hit himself, over and over on the top of his head with a closed fist. The doctors always had to sedate him on the spot because trying to move him was like walking in front of one of those automated tennis ball shooters.
Anikas' victim to the pen today was a doctor with beautiful red hair. He was watching her carefully, but would only glance on occasion so that he wasn't blatantly staring. He started to sketch the shape of her face as he kicked his feet up on the couch he had laid claim to today.
She made a beeline for her Nurse's Station, smiling friendly at her partner. Then, she would set all her stuff down, preferably on her locker, unless she had to make a beeline for the patient who always hit his head.. Again.
"You poor people.." She sighed, watching them all look just exhausted from walking outside. They were all getting used to being inside too much, so the Board told the nurses and doctors to include some outdoor things. But, it nearly killed a few of them. Silica couldn't complain about her job though. It was decent, and a good pay each month.
She was leaning against the bar where patients could come get a glass of water, when one in particular caught her eye. He was much smaller than he should be with is height, according to his long, outstretched skinny legs. He seemed to glance up at her when she looked at him, and she quickly turned as if she were getting a glass. "Miss Louis.. " she looked at the woman in front of her who was seeming to curl her hair on her finger wistfully, and giggle like a little school girl. Her real age was 88, but she obviously though she was just a youngster, maybe 7 or 8. "Miss Louis, Mister Lewinksky might like you if you go play cards with him." She readjusted the woman who was babbling about a 'certain someone' liking her, but was too shy to come over, all while clearly pointing at the elderly man who repeatedly shuffled cards at a table.
Silica sighed running a hand through her hair as she started to walk around the room, checking everyone's stableness. Until she came to him. The man with the long legs who seemed to be seriously sketching something or another, she couldn't tell Ashe stood in front of him with a sheepish smile. "How are you doing today, Mister Lyle?"
The woman appeared to be talking with another about something before she turned around to run her hand through her gorgeous red hair. She started to walk around the room, and it was then that Anikas flipped pages to draw someone else in the room. He opted for drawing someone sitting at a table who appeared to be playing chess with themselves. However, as he distracted himself from his intended drawing, and the woman who had caught his attention, he continued to glance at her from time to time. He aimed for the moments when her attention was focused on someone else, taking note on the details of her features.
Eventually, she made her way around to him. He knew it was inevitable and it didn't really bother him too much to think about it. When she stopped in front of him, he paused from sketching to return a look at her. No one ever stopped near him, everyone always passed by. She was the first to stop. He wasn't going to complain - well it's not like he spoke anyways. Rather, he enjoyed the interaction, not enough for it to be expressed.
"How are you doing today, Mister Lyle?" She asked him, and he continued to look up at her from his position on the couch. He knew it would most likely be a matter of moments before the woman would become uncomfortable with his silent gaze and move on. It's what most people did when they had tried to talk to him anyways.
"Are you alright, love? Do you feel dizzy or faint? Perhaps you need some water?" She wondered why exactly he was being so quiet. Perhaps her? She was kinda new, as she'd been at the institute for months, but not in this part of it for long, as it's only been 2 months. "Let me know if I can get you something, alright?" She searched his expression for a sign of anything. Could he be mute? Or deaf?
Maybe if she kept talking to him, he might give her some sign of life. "What are you drawing, there?" She nodded towards his pad, rather comfortably, as she was trained to talk to different types of people. Her hands sat in her lap, Silicia's finger entangled in one another. A spark of curiosity lit inside of her as she started thinking more and more of why he didn't speak. What made him this way?
She almost wished she'd never came up with an excuse to come over to him.
"Are you alright, love? Do you feel dizzy or faint? Perhaps you need some water?" It was then that Anikas wondered if she even knew anything about him, or if his records said that he was mute. He wondered as she asked him questions, questions that he had heard countless times before. His attention turned to glance around the room, taking tabs on the positions of the people and making mental note before his gaze landed back on her. "Let me know if I can get you something, alright?" In response, the slightest smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, amused with her attempts at trying to get a response from him.
"What are you drawing, there?" That was a new question for him. He flipped open his notebook to a page of one of the doctors examining themselves in a mirror. It was a nurse that had no longer worked in this section of the institution. He showed her from the comfort of holding the journal in his hands in his lap as he observed her. Mentally, he made sure to take note of her features from up close in order to add on to his drawing later. He hadn't planned to show her the drawing of her, or any drawings of the people that currently spent time in this sector from day to day; doctors or patients.
He sat up, no longer stretching his legs out, and moved to lean back into the seat on the couch across from her. Resting his head against the seat, he closed the journal before looking off to the side near a table of women who had gotten into their card game.
She watched his head tilt back, leaning against his seat, and smiled softly. She examined his stance now, more relaxed, and he seemed to examine her as well. Silicia chuckled lightly, more to herself.
"Do you play cards?" She looked at him, curiosity hinting in her eyes. She rested her chin on her clenched fist, her elbow on her knee, next to him. Silicia turned just enough to eye the elderly women who occupied a nearby table.
"Do you play cards? She looked at him with a curious glance and Anikas watched her for a moment. His thoughts on whether the woman was going to leave or not turned into thoughts on if she was ever going to leave. As the woman changed posture, moving so that she was supporting her head in her hand with her elbow on her leg, Anikas knew that she wasn't going anywhere anytime soon.
In response to her question, Anikas simply rose from the seat and moved to a bookshelf that held a few bins. It was against a wall nearby a window that overlooked a particularly busy street. There were two cop cars parked just at the base of the building he was in, he figured it was for security reasons. He glanced around to see people walking up and down the street with what appeared to be a set destination on their minds. There were two people standing and holding a rather heated conversation just across the street. Anikas turned his attention back to the shelf, no longer wanting to think about what it would be like to be free like the rest of them.
He hated that he had been stuck here because he didn't speak. However, he didn't really have much say in the matter. Grabbing a deck of cards from one of the bins he made his way back over to where the woman was seated with a small grin on his face. His mind still wandered back to the many meetings he had had with doctors. They all seemingly told him the same things. If you talk, we can get this show on the road, get you out of here. It was always something along those lines.
Silica studied the man, her patient as he seemed to take in everything he could ever see out that thin sheet of glass separating him from the rest of the world. She admired him from afar, taking in his odd height, and lanky legs.
She smiled as he got out the cards, and returned his smile to him as he sat in front of her, with a deck of cards. "Do you want to play with me?" She seemed happy, and had an 'aww' expression on her face.
After he set down the cards, she shuffled them rapidly, and bit her lower lip whilst doing so. "My father used to make me play poker with him, so I practiced shuffling a lot." She chuckled, trying to strike up a conversation with the quiet man, and giggling. Her red hair shining in the day's sunlight coming through the window he just examined.
"Have you played anything before with cards? Perhaps you have a favorite?" Silica looked to him with her bright eyes, and examined his seemingly normal ones.
