Alyssa tapped her fingers on the table while the waitress refilled her iced tea and pursed her lips together. It seemed that Paul may be late or she was being stood up—not that it was a date! They were just hanging out. She liked the guy and his companion, Ichiro, and wanted to be friends with them. After all, they were fun to be around. Alyssa even hoped that Paul brought Ichiro with him to the casual restaurant.

"Did you want me to take your order now," the waitress asked.

"No. I'm still waiting for my friend to get here," Alyssa said, shooting the poor young girl—who was probably putting herself through college—a rather offended look.

A wide smile spread across Alyssa's face as she looked up and saw Paul after hearing his voice. She had been reading over the menu when he first walked into the door of "Little Italia!"; the restaurant. And he looked good, she thought to herself. Nice and cleaned up. It must have been awkward to see her in a trendy white blouse and dark blue denim jeans with high heels. Her hair, long and brown, was left down of course. It was too nice to have it pulled up all the time.

"Hey, I'm the one that suggested we spar. So," she said gesturing to the booth seat across from her," no hard feelings. You look great by the way!" Too great, she thought to herself.

"Ichiro is great. I really like him. I guess he didn't want to come," Alyssa asked, noticing how Paul stumbled. Was something wrong? Had she said something to disturb him? Or was it that he was nervous ...? But why would Paul have anything to be nervous about? Oh god, did he think that it was a date? WAS it a date? Alyssa suddenly didn't know and the situation between them had gotten awkward right then. How to explain to Paul that it wasn't a date without making it even more awkward ...

No, that wasn't it. He was just nervous because maybe he was just out of his comfort zone. Yes. That was totally it.

Alyssa tilted her head down so that her hair shielded her blush a little bit, and then pulled the menu up in front of her face. She spoke into it, talking to Paul," And thanks for the compliment. I bet its odd seeing me in regular clothes—not my uniform or my work out clothes. And, I'm sure you're wondering just how I got your number too. I may or may not be stalking you slightly." Alyssa laughed and put down her menu, grabbed her tea, and sipped from the straw.

The woman set down her tea and looked at Paul with a curious expression. So that was what he had been up to lately. Adopting children. She hadn't really tagged Paul for a family man, so it was a big surprise. Then again, it shouldn't have been a surprise at all. Alyssa hardly knew the man but she was attempting to remedy that by spending time with him. She wanted to become really good friends with Paul.

"Well, yes, technically. Haha. It was a joke. But I did get your number from your profile. I thought we should, you know," Alyssa said, focusing her eyes on the menu again," see each other and catch up some. I would have done it sooner but I've been really busy at work. We're getting regular reports of false bomb threats and loads of suspicious activity. I don't know what's going on but something tells me its bad."

"But, we're totally not here to talk about what's going on with my job," she said lifting her eyes back up to Paul," So, tell me about the kids you adopted. What's their name? And how have you been too?"

Alyssa listened to each word that Paul said, even going so far as to prop her elbow up on the table and place her cheek on it. There was a little smile on her face that just didn't go away. But, it did not soon after Paul clenched his fist. She seemed really good at bringing up topics that upset him. Dropping her smile, Alyssa reached over and placed her hands over Paul's clenched fist.

"I'm sorry. I really shouldn't ask about a lot of things. Please don't be upset. I am really, really sorry for asking. I was just curious, Pa—"

"You two ready to order? And what can I get you to drink, sir," the waitress said, arriving back at their table.

The woman nodded, understanding that there were just some topics that were not ever going to be discussed. She had remember how Paul put his fist through a wall in his anger. She didn't like seeing him like that. It had hurt her a little bit, especially knowing that it was her that brought the topic up in the first place.

"Hey, how about we play a little 'get to know you' game," Alyssa asked, pulling her hands back toward herself. It was all there was left to do while Paul's drink was in the making. "Have you ever played twenty questions with someone?"

Alyssa's thoughts paused for a moment as she watched Paul sit back and her eyes just focused on his shoulders all by themselves. A distant look came into her eye and it was a few moments before she blinked. The woman's body flinched a little bit, crashing back down to reality.

"Oh—yeah. We just continue to ask questions of each other. Usually it leads to more than twenty questions or until we get bored. Its a really good game to learn about another person. So," Alyssa said, shifting around in her seat," I will go first. If you could be any animal in the world, what would it be, Paul?"

"An eagle, huh? They are pretty majestic," Alyssa said, admiring his answer. It was a good one. I was something she could envision and not something way out there that she had never even heard of before.

"I think I'd like to be a cat. You know, cute and cuddly, well fed and lazy," Alyssa answered her own question, mulling over how it would be if she were a cat. It was probably one of the best experiences ever. No worries. No responsibilities. Just eat, sleep, and cuddle.

The waitress returned and placed Paul's green tea in front of him, pulled out a pad, and asked, "Is the couple ready to order?"

Alyssa sunk into her seat and pulled her menu up to hide her face again. She was blushing in embarrassment. That awkwardness had come back.

"I, uh, I guess just the spaghetti, not meat sauce. I'm vegetarian," she said, hoping that nothing else that was more awkward than this would pop up.

The waitress had taken Alyssa's refuge—the menu—so she was forced to sit there, hands tucked in between her thighs, and wait for the awkwardness to pass by again. "Yeah," she spoke up, the waitress having left," I love cats. I own five of them—and please, no old lonely cat-lady jokes. I get enough of that at work as it is! Its hard being a woman in a man's shoes concerning careers. Anyway, there's Socrates, Aristotle, Galileo, Leonardo, and Poe. All named after famous people. I'm really not good at naming things."

"So, I guess next question since you just asked yours," Alyssa said, smiling prettily again," If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?"

"Well, I was thinking somewhere tropical, you know? Lay out in the sun and just catch a nice tan. Relax and enjoy a little vacation. I've been wanting to go to the beach here but I've been extremely busy. Who knows, maybe one day you and I could go," Alyssa said, throwing out the suggestion to Paul at the end. And then the thought of seeing him without a shirt on, tanning in the sun ... Alyssa paused for a moment, silence growing between them as she fantasized for a moment.

Yes, that would be very nice. Very nice indeed.

"You took the words right out of my mouth, Paul," Alyssa said with her smile growing a little wider and brighter. She loved sports and competition! There was nothing better than winning a game after boasting about her skill. "And I think football or basketball is my favorite sport. I love boxing too as you know," Alyssa said with a little smirk, mentioning their spar in the dojo.

Their conversation was interrupted by the waitress. The meals they ordered had arrived and were set down in front of them. It smelled absolutely delicious. Alyssa loved this place and came here almost every night. She wasn't much of a cook and was an utter disaster in the kitchen. Whenever she attempted to cook something the room was a warzone of dishes and raw food.

"This smells really good," Alyssa said, grabbing up her fork. "So, you said that you cook," the woman asked before twirling a few noodles and taking her first bite of spaghetti.

"Yes ... yes you would be, Paul," Alyssa said, her eyes having been drawn to his shoulders again. If there was anything more attractive on a man than his shoulders, well, it'd be a close race but she'd say their smile. There was nothing better than a great smile on a man.

"My background? Well, not much to say. I was raised by my father mostly. My mother wasn't around after they got divorced when I was five, so he raised me mostly. Its why I'm more of a tomboy than a lady, but I don't mind at all. Boys are much more fun to play with," the woman said with a laugh. "Anyway, I followed in his footsteps and went into the academy after spending a few years in college for criminal law. I could easily become a detective but I like being a regular Joe-Schmo in the police force."

"And that's my entire life story. Sad, but simple and happy," Alyssa commented before asking the next question," So, how old are you anyway, Paul?"

Twenty-One! He was four years younger than her. Not that it mattered, she didn't view age as a problem whe—Alyssa stopped that though, blushing for the third time that night. She ate some more of her own paste while Paul continued to answer her question. She didn't even know what question they were on nor cared. This little evening was turning out to be really fun and super relaxing. It had been a good decision to ask him to dinner.

"Oh. Well, yes. I just, I don't know," Alyssa said with a shrug while grabbing her iced tea," I guess I like a little challenge. Competition is a big thing for me, whether I lose or win. How about you? Do you like a little competition, Paul?" The smile on her face was a little mischievous, implying that their spar probably wasn't going to be the last one. Paul would be very good for her training and losing to him was going to make her strong.

"Oh that's an easy one. It has to be the first time that we met; the day with that little girl-witch thing, who broke my nose and attempted to kill me. Thank God we've got a good hospital or I wouldn't look so pretty as I do now," Alyssa said, forking more spaghetti in her mouth. That day hardly needed explanation. Paul had been there too, right in the middle of all the chaos.

"So, curious question and don't flip out," she said after taking a long drink of her tea," Are you like ... dating anyone?" Alyssa tried so hard to pass the question off as innocent but hardly. She really wanted to know. Paul was quickly shaping up to be dating material.

Suddenly the room became a little more warm than it really was and Alyssa even commented on it," Is it warm in here or is that just me?" The woman attempted to not answer his question and shoved a rather large mouthful of spaghetti in her mouth. When she chewed, Alyssa took her sweet time. She needed time to think about her answer so she wasn't caught. After finishing, and swallowing, she had no choice but to finally answer.

"Well, no," Alyssa said, obviously lying. She wasn't really good at lying. Down right bad at it. The woman cleared her throat and reached for her tea again, trying so hard to avoid Paul's gaze. She did give him a second's glance of course, she could hardly keep her eyes off of him.

"I-I was just wondering why such a good guy like you isn't in a relationship with anyone. I suppose Ichiro chases them off," Alyssa said, an attempt at a joke to lighten the tension.

The beach. That image of him running around under the sun, smiling, and just enjoying life sprang back up into her mind. A rather dreamy expression came over her face. She didn't doubt his claim. Alyssa actually wondered why there weren't a ton of girls following him around or texting him; something.

"Oh," she said, coming out of her daydream and she sighed, sinking back into the booth seat," Okay, okay." She placed her hands flat on the table, fingers wide spread, and nodded. "Yeah, I lied. You caught me, Paul. I just didn't want to seem like some weird creepy woman, you know, stealing your address and then stealing your phone number and then asking you out to dinner with me. You're just," her brows raised," a little too attractive and not just because of your nice body, Paul."

Whelp. There is was. The truth.

"I mean! Damn it. I'm not like asking to date you or something, I'm just—I don't even know anymore," Alyssa said, laughing, and rest her cheek on her hand again. "I'm so sorry," was all that she could say between her laughter.

"I'm glad you have so much faith in me, Paul. I'd only put the cams in the best places of course," Alyssa said, teasing him back," And they'd be in places you'd never find." It was an empty threat. Besides, she'd never get passed Ichiro. Actually, the drake would most likely be more offended that he wasn't receiving so much attracted attention but then again, he had a mate. Ichiro wasn't the one that Alyssa was interested in either. The thought was just for humor on her part.

"I guess my next question would be, is if we can classify this as a first date," Alyssa said watching him with her bright smile. "I'm just kidding," she backed out and fidgeted with her food using her fork. "I guess my real next question is ... if you'll go to the beach with me sometime. Maybe for a weekend. I know this great beach house that I can rent for the weekend and you can bring the whole family for some fun. What do you think, Paul?"

All alone with Paul, at the beach? Oh, Alyssa did not know if she could handle that right now. Not at all. "La ... Kiese? It sounds really nice. I guess I wouldn't mind going. I'll have to put in a request for leave at work. It shouldn't be too hard. The captain is always telling me that I need to do something else besides work," Alyssa said, her smile returning.

And then there was a beep. She couldn't ignore it. Alyssa looked at Paul apologetically and pulled out a beeper. Another bomb threat most likely and all hands were needed. "Paul, I'm sorry but," the woman said," I have to go. Work is calling and its really important." She then stood up and took her wallet out, flipping through the bills inside to pay for dinner.

Alyssa stood there for a moment, watching him leave in a slightly perverse manner. She couldn't help herself! But the woman all too soon snapped into her professional demeanor, grabbed up her coat from the back of her booth, and started to run out of the restaurant.

As she made way for the station, she couldn't help but to recall Paul's last words. It was nice to know that he cared for her as a friend. She already considered him a very good friend.

The woman blinked in astonishment and really didn't know what to think about what just happened. Alyssa shifted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and looked at Paul. "I guess as ready as I can be," she said, looking rather nervous. This wasn't going to hurt was it? Alyssa pursed her lips together and looked back from where they had come; Wing City. Maybe it wasn't too late to turn back? Maybe work would call her and she wouldn't have to go through this hole that Ichiro just ripped into the air.

But then Alyssa realized that she was being unfair. Paul and Ichiro were probably looking forward to this a great deal and she had been too, until this whole display. Letting her worry drop, the woman forced a smile on her face and she shrugged.

"Okay, do your worst, but I gotta be honest. I'm a little scared, Paul," she admitted.

Alyssa would be lying if she didn't say she was a little stunned by Paul taking her hand in his own. She'd be lying even more if she said that she didn't like it too. But that little happiness died away as they stepped through the portal. The feeling of static made the hairs on Alyssa's arms and neck rise, making her even more nervous. But once they were on the other side, the woman calmed down, though that too was short lived.

"He's not coming," Alyssa asked Paul, her eyes wide. She was going to be all alone with him their entire trip. If she wasn't nervous then Alyssa definitely was then. Her hand gripped Paul's just a little tighter.

Alyssa followed Paul, looking at everything she could. It was an exotic place and much different than the city was raised in. Everything seemed to be made of polished stone; marble. The woman watched the Green Guard, humans and their drakes. So this was what Ichiro's world was like.

"What's there to do here, Paul," she asked," Your the guide in this trip. You're the one supposed to be making the suggestions." Alyssa smiled up at him, nudging him during their walk with her shoulder, lightly.

The woman's bright smiled returned and she let go of Paul's hand only to tug on his arm. "Paul! We have to see if there is a carnival going on after we find a ... hotel or something, or maybe we should camp out. Oh that sounds good. I haven't been camping in a long time. We could spend the day at the beach, and then if there is one, the carnival, and then set up camp to watch the sunset," Alyssa said, her excitement growing. It was obvious she didn't get out of town often and go on vacation. Actually, this was her first time.

"What do you think," she asked, her smile still brilliant as she looked up at him," does that sound good?"

It was a comfort that Paul had gotten them a nice suite with two rooms instead of one of those cheap hotels back in Wing City where there was only one room and one bed. Alyssa really appreciated Paul's thoughtfulness and respect. It made her realize that Paul was more of a gentleman than most she had ever met. It usually only took five minutes after meeting before they attempted to get into her pants. But, that was what her taser was for and the pepper spray in her purse.

Alyssa was never without her purse unless on duty, even including the vacation she was on with Paul. "Well," Alyssa said to Paul," what are you waiting for? I will race yo—" The woman didn't finish her sentence before taking off running in the direction that Paul had shown.
