Description

Gabby DeLeon
Image

There once was a girl
A mysterious girl
Who never did care to know what she truly wanted
So she carelessly played
Which, doubtless, unmade
The frayed sanity, doubtless
Her vanity'd come into play....

There once was a girl
A dim-witted girl
Who poisoned herself on the frailties of wishful thinking
That the past could be blinded
And cautions unminded
Opposing thoughts grinded
Leaving very little behind

There once was a girl
A heart-broken girl
Who came to find out that her pleasures had crumbled to dust
That nothing was left
And, her spirit bereft
Thought her life should be cleft....

...then nothing was left.

An untimely end
With no message to send
But what if this tragedy changed
With the touch of a friend?

So begins...

She hadn't slept. Not really, anyway. Her dreams were filled with feverish images that gave her little rest, and what sleep she got from the pain medication only served to make her feel sluggish upon awakening. This time was not unique in that sense. As she woke up, she felt slightly disoriented, unsure of time or place, until she found the wall clock in her hospital room, and everything came rushing back to her in a whirl.

Momentarily dizzy, she sat up in bed, pushing her hair back away from her face as it fell in tangles around her shoulders.

"I need to get out of here." she mumbled, resting her face in her hands and drawing her fingertips over her cheeks. She was going to go crazy.

She squinted at him as he approached, her brow furrowing slightly before she shrugged. "I guess so. Better than I did when I was rolled in here." she replied tiredly. She drew her knees up, looking towards the window and away from Myles.

There was something not quite right about the arrangements here. Yet, she had the propensity to be paranoid when it came to men who were oddly attached to the idea of helping her. Internally, she was struggling. The haze of drugs and exhaustion had faded, and she was thinking clearly for the first time in a few days.

"I...appreciate you being here, Myles, but don't you have anywhere else to be?" she asked, finally managing to look his way. "I'll be fine here, y'know? Why are you sticking around?"

She wanted to know, and the look she gave him said she wasn't going to take a bullshit answer either.

She didn't look as though she believed him, but she didn't push the matter further after that. Settling down into her pillow, her eyes fell to half-lid, lips parting as she drew in a breath and considered what to say next.

"It's good." she finally managed. "I feel like, most of the time, the people around me are only out to get what they want. I'm glad to see it isn't the same for other people."

"Less purpley. More yellow-green." Gabby noted. "And...well, I guess I have a home, but it never really felt that way to me, I guess. Not since...well, not for a little while anyway." She shifted to look his way.

"Who needs home though? I've always wanted to travel. Perhaps not to Ireland. Definitely not Ireland."

"It was an Irish mob-boss who beat the shit out of me." Gabby replied quietly.

"I'm boycotting their country. Forever." She pouted, her tongue flicking out to touch at the scab that had formed there. "Honestly, the guy should have known it woulnd't be such an easy thing to grab my attention. Typical male."

Covering fear with humor worked best, she found.

And Gabby fixed him with a gaze just as intense as his was meant to be. His words stirred something inside her, something akin to hope, but she didn't dare to place her faith in a fifteen year old boy, even one as (seemingly) selfless as he was. She didn't dare to have her heart broken that way. Not again.

But still, she smiled, her eyes gentle as she watched him.

"It's a nice thought." she agreed softly. "I really...really hope I can."

But, to be on the safe side, she wouldn't. Trust was more precious to her than anything else, and she had very little of it to give away.

"I'm alright!" the young lady piped up, her short, dark hair in a full mess around her face. She straightened, running a hand through her hair, and looked to the woman in the bed. Gabby stared, wide-eyed and white-faced, at the pair who had decided to teleport right into the middle of her hospital room.

It was almost amusing how quickly she had backed up to the head of the bed, her knees drawn up, with her eyes as wide as saucers.

"What the fuck is going on?" she said in a low, throaty voice. October, stunned by the sudden vulgarity, could only stare.

"I..." she began, suddenly looking to Oliver. "Why are we here, Oli? Do you know her?"

Another interest who has?

Gabby wrapped her arms around her knees, resting her chin against the bony surface as she eyed Oliver with a look that was nothing short of suspicious contempt. Her hazel gaze was sharp, and it cut like a knife as she shifted to look between the boys, and then back to the girl.

She was startled to find October practically sitting on her bed.

"Who did this to you?" she asked, gazing intently at Gabby's bruises. The Italian's brow wrinkled, and she scooted a few inches to the side, away from October's dark gaze.

"Just some guy. It isn't worth talking about."

But October looked fundamentally disturbed. It wasn't painted on her face, but her eyes were troubled. "You didn't know him, and he hurt you like this?"

Gabby wondered, briefly, if she was for real. October had to be at least a few years her junior. "Uh...yeah. People suck like that I guess."

October then looked to Oli, that same worried appearance misting over her eyes. She made a quiet sound of discomfort, and abruptly rose before she quietly excused herself, and walked from the room.

Gabby was out of the bed, having heard everything that had gone on. She had her hands clenched into fists, and she was staring at the young man with an unimaginable amount of hurt and confusion written all over her face.

"I didn't catch what you said." she murmured bitterly, glancing to the troll as he went barelling out of the hospital room. "Sorry, but it sounded like someone was coming that I wasn't quite expecting."

Her fingertips trembled with a rage she didn't realize that she had, and she took a threatening step towards Myles, feeling for all the world like the entire world was closing in around her.

"What the hell are you talking about, Myles?"

October was half way down the hall when Oliver called her name. When she turned back around to face him, her eyes were full of tears, and she was eagerly lifting her hand to brush them away. "I'm fine!" she called back, a little too loudly. Her chest heaved, though, breaths coming shallowly as she fought to keep her composure.

"I just...I don't feel too well." she murmured, sniffing and rubbing at her eyes before she turned down a hallway, towards an empty waiting room, where she plopped herself down on a seat, buried her face in her hands, and began to silently cry.

"In my experience, I'm more comfortable with meeting people I actually know." she replied, her tone acidic. "And it isn't good to hear that you think he won't do anything to me when he sees me.

Against her better judgment, her eyes teared up, and she brushed away at them furiously. "Here I thought you were just going out of your way to be nice." She turned to snatch up her jacket, and forcefully shoved her arms through it. Then, she moved to walk out of the room, the IV line tugging on her wrist. She turned, ripped the catheter out, and clamped her palm down on her hand before turning back to the door.

"Get out of the way, Myles." she all but growled.

"Not that kind of sick," October mumbled into her hands. When she felt his touch against her cheek, she leaned into him, refusing to meet his eyes as tears mercilessly slipped down her nose.

"I just, a man was killed for something so insubstantial...and this girl...that poor girl was just beaten by people she didn't even know. I don't...I don't understand why people are so hateful." The last word was a pained whisper, ending in a hiccuping sob.

"I just don't know."

One thing Myles was right about, was that it really wasn't the right time for her to go storming around. She noticed that her vision became odd as she marched toward the door, but she barelled forward anyway, trying to side-step Myles to get around him and go out the door. What ended up happening, however, was her sudden loss of balance.

She fell against the door frame, groaning softly as she went to her knees, her head bowed to her chest as her body leaned against the frame. Her vision swam before her eyes, but she still weakly attempted to get to her feet.

"You stay away from me." she said meekly, to anyone who might get close.

"I'm leaving."

She listened to his words, thinking long and hard about what he was saying. So hate was a harsh reality then? Something she'd have to get used to? Did that mean that she would eventually come to hate too?

She didn't think so. She hoped not, in fact. And, as Oliver pulled her closer, fitting her against his side like it was meant to be, she hoped that Oliver had never truly hated too. She didn't think so. He'd only ever shown her spectacular kindnesses, keeping her safe, affectionately saving his smiles for her sake. There was a tenderness there, between the two of them. It was something she hadn't recognized until that moment, when Oliver said that strange, yet powerful four lettered word that she'd only ever heard about in fairy tales.

She turned, wiping at her eyes and getting up on her knees so she could put her arms around his thick neck. Then, soft as the brush of a feather, she kissed his cheek, uncaring as always of the fact that he was a troll, and she, a girl.

"I love you, Oliver Frye." she told him quietly. And then, almost hesitantly, she added,

"If...that's ok."

Gabby was leaning heavily against the nurse, her eyes swimming with tears as she stared at the floor, refusing to look towards Myles or anyone else for that matter. She hated all of them. She didn't want to stay, didn't want to be seen by anyone else for a very long time.

"No more visitors." she told the nurse as she was lead back to bed. "Please. Not anymore."

SHe didn't so much as glance Myles way as he exited.

"That's how its supposed to be." she replied, glancing up at him as her cheeks colored pink. She offered a small smile, then closed her eyes as she gave his neck a light squeeze.

"But I'm very very sure."

She wasn't willing to stick around anymore. She'd been in the hospital for too long, and now, on Halloween, she was going to make her great escape. But first...

She removed her IV (again), slipped into her day clothes, tore off her wrist band that identified her as a patient, and pulled out her cell phone. Sitting on the edge of her bed, she shot off a quick text to a familiar face, hoping they responded quickly.

Any chance I could get you to pick me up from the hospital?

Gabby poked her head out of the hospital room, her eyes widening, smile growing as she spied Farai coming tromping down the hospital hall. She glanced around, looking out for the nurse she was sure was going to lock her back into her room.

Then she lifted an arm and waved to him.

"Farai, lets make like a bad afterparty and get the hell out of here, huh?"

She was so ready to go.

"Long story." Gabby said, her eyes widening as she stared down the hall. Without hesitating, she grabbed Farai's hand, tugging them along behind her as she began to lead the way towards the fire exit stairs at a fast clip. As they reached the end of the hall, she shoved the door open, and began to slip down the stairs with relatively little difficulty.

"When we get to the street," she called back to them. "Where are we going?"

She figured, of course, that Farai had a relatively completed escape plan.

"If I could avoid anything to do with hospitals, that'd be fantastic." she replied, glancing down at herself. Pondering, she took the hem of her shirt, and ripped it, so that the hem only came down to cover the top of her rib cage.

Beneath that, bandages, some of them blood stained. It would have been funny if they weren't real.

"Walk with a limp, and I'll look like a regular zombie, eh?" she asked them, glancing back over her shoulder before reaching up to knot her hair at the base of her neck. When they came to the exit, she threw it open, dumping out onto the street before making her way towards Gambits.

"Let's get there then huh?"

She walked in looking like a zombie fresh out of 'The Walking Dead'. But Gabby was very much alive. She watched the patrons, looked on like the spectator she was, and hesitated.

"You weren't kidding..." she said to Farai. "This is some Halloween thing."

It was nuts.

"Given where we are..." Gabby started, her brow furrowing for a moment as she propped her chin in her hand, her head tilting to the side thoughtfully.

"I'd say its real." She then looked to Farai, a furrow coming to her brow.

"You couldn't figure out if you wanted to be a zombie or a cowboy, could you?"

Gabby's mouth twisted in a smirk. She was about to shove against Farai's shoulder, but then the door burst inward, and a parade of very small...

...candy people?...

"I thought we were in Gambits!" she cried to Farai.

"Not the fucking 'Its a small world' Disney ride!"

"H-hey!" Gabby stumbled back, kicking out at the gumdrop children and sending a few of them flying. When she saw Farai fall to the ground, she began to muck through the mess towards them, before one caught her about the ankle and sent her to her knees.

It was all over then.

She went to her hands and knees, letting her head hang as small gumdrop children continued to beat her with the licorice.

"Farai you owe me!" she shouted angrily, before flopping onto her face.
