History

Jonas was born into a well off family, the son of a miner. He was an inventor at a young age always tinkering and making things, combining chemicals and stones to find out what exploded. His enthusiasm for science never faultered as he grew up, being an expert machinist, though he was skilled to some degree in all levels of science. One day while escavating with several others he discovered a man in a cave, badly burned and barely alive. The man was taken to hospital. Shortly after he broke free and went on a rampage of chaos. Jonas took it upon himself to stop the man, blaming himself for being the one to bring him to the surface.

Thus began a lengthy series of battles of machine and intellect, contraptions smashed and property damaged. One day Gentry was launched off into space, to escape to another world, but Jonas persued relentlessly.

So begins...

Jonas Mackenzie's Story

A few careful yet casual steps brought a well dressed individual in a waist coat and top hat down the stairs. His features were speculative, insightful and generally pleasant. He was well-kept, everything about him very neat and proper, as if extra care had gone into maintaining his appearance. His black hair fell mostly behind him in a wavy mess, possibly the only thing lacking appropriate grooming.

Approaching the bar he paused and frowned, eyes passing and left and right as if he expected a man to approach. When a droid did, he lit up in fascination, hands patting at his pockets for something or other, then scowling as he couldn't locate it.

Jonas' train of thought was terribly interrupted as a child collided with one of the tables. Turning about in surprise he hurried over. "Excuse me, little miss, are you alright?" he said in a very rounded sort of accent, removing his top hat and placing it down on the table so it might not intrude on his assisting with the girl. "Come now, up to your feet," he insisted, offering out hands for support. "That was quite a fright, wasn't it! However did you manage that?"

The gentlemans eyebrows raised in confusion, though he wouldn't press the matter. "Why, you're at Gambit's, little Miss. A bar in Wing City and, as I have been told, on the planet of Terra. Oh... I hope I am not being too precise," he said with a small frown. In the past that had been a problem! For a moment he studied the child, once more with a speculative gaze. "You wouldn't happen to have a pocket screwdriver set on you, would you? No, nevermind. I shall have to get my own tools if I wish to examine the insides of the machines around here. Aren't they fascinating?" He smiled pleasantly.

"Who is this 'CeCe' you speak of? Your mother? I daresay we should go find her and take you away from such a seedy establishment."

Glitter...? Jonas turned his head slightly to look at the glittering on his sleeves, then raised his head to look upwards. Well this was no good. He couldn't be walking around all covered in glitter. It was simply silly. Chuckling, he turned back to the child in time to see her sprawling forward. "Dear Miss, you must be careful. Are your shoes tied properly?" he asked, seeking the most likely solution as to why this girl kept tripping over.

Ah, so CeCe was an invisible friend. A soft smile came to the mans face as he nodded in appreciation for the imagination of a child. "Adorable," he said to himself. "Do you mean to say CeCe comes from a place of nothing?"

Jonas chuckled to himself in a pleased manner. "Oh I see," he said simply, "In charge of nothing." Well, of course! Invisible friends couldn't affect the world. He was genuinely impressed with the logic that had driven this childs mind to these conclusions. It was very well thought out and rather uncommon for someone so young. "Ah, where are your parents? We should probably return you to them before they become worried as to your whereabouts."

Jonas' let his eyes narrow a touch disconcerted. "Now there's no need to raise your voice, Miss. And I am sure your parents didn't abandon you. You look too well kept for such a thing." He nodded. Certainly this girl had some sort of carer. Now it was just a matter of figuring out who. Perhaps a distant relative or... Oh!

"Oh, are you from an orphanage?" he asked, then palced a hand over his mouth, "Not meaning to be rude, of course."

Jonas let out a sigh. So the girl wished to be difficult. "Of course," he said with a sigh. He would try to reason with her. "So you stay in a place that is no where, full of no things?" he asked fairly calmly, but this was rapidly wearing on his patience. What an insistant little miss!

Jonas coughed politely. "But wouldn't people no where in a place of no thing be... no one?" he asked, cocking his head, "Afterall, you're somewhere that isn't, so how can anything in a place that isn't, be?" Obviously, he had dealt with philosophy before.

Jonas pondered on this for a moment, before opening up a hand before Alyssa. "You're proving yourself very intelligent. What is in my palm?" he asked patiently.

Jonas was very surprised! That was a very clever thought for a child. "But you can tell a distinction between everything and nothing, yes? And if nothing is anything but everything, then how can it be used for creation." He paused and rubbed his chin. "Could I borrow you? I feel the local university would be thoroughly interested in the the levels of intelligence you are showing. I personally admit you are far smarter than I initially suspected. I even applaude you," he said, doing just that.

The setting changes from gambits-bar to The Boiling Plains

The desolate and war-torn plains had a new visitor today, a mechanical spider of sorts, chuffing and clanking loudly as it slowly moved across the plains. It was little more than four legs leading up to a platform and a drill in the center, perhaps only a story and a half tall.

The man placed at the top pulled levers and turned cranks furiously to keep the groaning metal moving, but overall he seemed pleased. Out on the field and working, and with his top hat keeping the sun off his head. The only other notable thing about him was he had abandoned his coat, leaving him with nothing but his white long sleeved shirt beneath, which he was narrowly avoiding perspiring on for the sake of decency and comfort.

The man paused, leaning over the edge of the device to observe the other below. THe machine ground to a halt, groaning and complaining, but no concern crossed the gentry's features. "Good day to you, as well, sir. What brings you out to these parts of the land? Salvaging or surveying? It would be most excellent to find another here for the same reason as myself." He spoke with a very sensible and intellignet sort of voice, that cheery and inspired mind that could be found in certain people.

"It's a mining spider," he said, indicating to the lower half of it, where the drill sat between the four legs. "I can set it to begin drilling. It's an efficient way to survey, as I came out here to look for precious rocks and minerals, but after I found all of this... Wonderful metal just lying about, I was intending to search more normally. I daresay, you aren't sent by my nemesis, are you?" he asked, cocking his head calmly. He didn't actually believe such, but he felt politeness was the way to go about it.

What pleasant company! "Ah, how rude of me to not have mentioned my name thus far. I am Jonas Mackenzie, intrepid inventor and, ah, partially lost individual. Not in this place, but rather in time. You see, I converted a telephone box to travel through time, but there was an accident and it was damaged." He merely shrugged, pulling a few levers and slowly the spider legs bent until the drill pressed against the floor.

One side of the platform opened up and down slide a ladder. "You seem like a sensible fellow. Please, join me, so that we both might enjoy a spider ride in the breeze."

Jonas gave off a pleasant laugh. "Oh how I wish my inventions were appreciated, and they probably would be, t'were it not for the intervention of my fiendish nemesis." He shook one had ruefully at the air, as if cursing the man. "I fear I obsess with the man a touch, leading me to a life of one-upsmanship, in which I desperately try to place myself ahead of him. He was the reason, afterall, I constructed my time machine, to seek him out and cease his dastardly plans."

Jonas even leant down and shook the mans hand. It was clear that, despite his seemingly upper class nature, he had no qualms with getting dirty. If he was prompted he would even use fisticuffs.

"A dangerous individual I know only as 'The Gentry'. His face was horribly disfigured by a terrible accident, and as such he wears a mask to cover his injuries. He is notorious for glowing red eyes and chuffs of steam from his mouth. I fear the man went mad from pain long ago. But he is still a brilliant inventor and utterly ruthless." Jonas let out a sigh, leaning on one of the controls of his machine. "I fear greatly that he ay cause some trouble in my home if I do not return soon, or find another way to stop him."

Jonas tilted his head thoughtfully. "Well, I would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately what I truly need is this amazing mineral, Magicium. 'The Stone of Magic', they call it. So far I haven't seen nor found any on this planet, though I have only been here a short time." He suddenly raised his head and pointed.

"I say, is that a shooting star?"

Descending rapidly through the air and wrapped in flames was some sort of angeled metal box, plummetting downwards for the ground perhaps a hundred meters from them.

They wouldn't have to wait long as it smashed into the earth with a loud BOOM, sending dirt and debris flinging about in all directions. Jonas nodded with determination in his eyes, pulling levers and turning cranks to get his spider walking again, the clunky four legs awkwardly shuffling over the wasteland. As the dust cleared it was more easily seen that it was simply a metal box, maybe even a coffin, but it caused Jonas to jolt the machine to a stop.

"Hark!" he cried, "We're in luck!" He reached down to the floor, removing a panel and reaching for some exotic looking weaponry with great glass bulbs and strange shapes and tubes. "To arms, my nemesis has revealed himself!"

Jonas laughed. "Kill? As optimistic as I might be, I shan't think I am able to." With a loud bang! the metal casket was sent hurtling into the air and back to the ground. And slowly, rising from the coffin, was a deranged looking figure with a suit, tophat, metal face and glowing red eyes.

"The Gentry," said Jonas raising his weapon towards the man. "Well, friend, see if you can direct us towards him. The controls are all labelled ah... somewhat." He smiled uncertainly, as if offering encouragement. "Well, you're an intelligent lad, you'll figure it out." The Gentry tilted his head left, then right, each with a metal squeak of unoiled joints. Each of their fingers twitched one after the other, as if they were trying to make sure everything was still fully functioning after the crash.

The first leg of the machine raised and slammed down, but then the machine halted. "Ah-ah, its rather physical working this machine. To get the other two legs in action you must pull that level, and the crank manages the speed and um- well, nothing you can do can really break it so if all else fails pull every lever as quickly as possible."

The Gentry strode forward, back arched into a persistant slouch which made them seem all the more menacing as a chuff of steam blew from their mouth. Their first obstacle was simply punched aside, a car that lasted a mere split second before being smashed in two by the mighty fist of the fiendish individual.

"Ready!" called Jonas, "Stand steady! And..." He took in a deep breath as the Gentry's head slowly tilted upwards in acknowledgement of his vehicle.

"Fire!" he shouted, a blast of what appeared to be green lightning hurtled from the gun for the man. There was an explosion on the ground, sending great waves of dust billowing out in all directions. But from the dust leapt a figure, The Gentry, hurtling into the sky like some inhuman thing of the night. And then he came crashing down for the spider.

"Brace for impact!"

Jonas leant over, grabbing two levers and tugging down on them. The machine ground to a halt, then began to lower, as if it was about to use the drill. "I dare say I make things tougher than his fists," he said with a hint of pride.

He pressed himself firmly against the outer edge of the platform as down came The Gentry. Smash! His fist collided with the center of the spider, piercing through the hull only to be stuck in the drill component itself. The Gentry gave a sharp tug, trying to retrieve his arm, but he was apparently stuck. Jonas himself had fallen over from the mighty ground shaking impact that had just been imparted on his vehicle.

"Agreed!" cried Jonas, kicking open the side and letting the ladder slide down. He placed a hand on either side and simply dropped downwards to the floor, landing with a slight paf before raising his gun and running backwards. "Quickly! Quickly now! We have to disable him the best we can!" By which he meant he was going to try to crush the man beneath his own spider mech.

"Indeed! Get to it while I work on wasting another masterpiece of mine!" he said, raising the gun and firing at the drill of the spider. The damage was enough that strain was put on the legs, but The Gentry appeared to be stuck in the top, still. Jonas then aimed rather methodically for the joints of each leg, causing the central bulk to nearly fall completely down to the ground with each leg overhead.
