Miana's Story

Up above, a dark shadow zoomed. It nearly blotted out the blue light source for its size, and the ravine suddenly became dark.

Sangrei would find a hand wrap around his mouth and tug him back.

"Shh!" came a sharp whisper, a body pressing up against his back as they held him close into a crevice, just as the light passed over the ledge. "What are you doing here? There! Are you stupid? You almost got killed!"

If the young man were to look back, he would find two purple eyes peering back at him through heavy cloth wraps. She was shorter than him, if only by a few inches.

She backed away, thin hands up. "You fell down? There must be a weak spot..." she muttered, the cloth wrapped around her face shifting as she frowned beneath it. She tightened the veil around her lips and looked up the very long slide.

"We can't go back up there, so we'll have to go the long way. You're from the surface, right? Yeah, you just said that." She shuffled near the edge, watching the large black splotch move around the corner. "Alright, we're safe." She looked behind her at the boy.

"You look weird, so you have to be from the surface." Her eyes peered down at his swords. "Are you a warrior?"

She pressed her back against the wall, inhaling slowly. "I can't afford to show my face. Not down here. That's suicide." she said matter-of-factly, rolling her eyes. "That thing? It's a sentinel. No one is supposed to be out during this time. If it finds you breaking the rules, you're good as dead, you know!"

She stooped, looking down. The ravine was so deep that even the bright, fake lightsource could not reach the bottom. It was dark.

"You wanna get back up, right? We should go. Come on!" She waved to him, then turned the corner.

There really was not much of a corner. Just three inches of ledge that wound down a path. She walked along it like it was no problem.

"If you're a warrior, we should be okay."

"Well, if you're quieter, then we won't have to fight, so keep your voice down." she shot back at him, strolling along the thin ledge as easily as a cat would have done.

As they walked, an archway up ahead became visible, and beside it, a long crack in the mountain. The girl ambled toward it, her hands held out beside her. "You're in the Hu Ravine. We're...sort of a secret people. Though everyone is inside right now. Asleep." she explained, looking toward the arch. It was made of rock, carved from the mountain, with intricate patterns liking the sides.

Suddenly, the girl spun around. "Hey! You're not gonna fall, right? '

"Oh. Things come out at...er...'night.' And people shouldn't be out to see them. Of course, that's a total lie. They just don't want people to escape." she said, looking into the darkness with those bright purple orbs of hers. When he tensed from her sudden spin and inquiry, her cheekbones pushed up the lids to her eyes. She was grinning.

"Yeah, just making sure!" the girl giggled, running along up ahead of him. "Nobody comes up this high except me. I've only done it a few times." she said, walking onto a much broader ledge where it was easier to walk. Instead of going toward the decorative arch, however, she ducked to squeeze through the crack in the wall.

"That entryway is a diversion. This is the actual one!" she called from the claustrophobic space, waving for him to follow.

She pointed up.

"Where do you think? They don't want people to leave! Wow, you surface folk are dense!" she grumbled, moving ahead as quickly as she could. After just a few sparse minutes of walking, the small tunnel opened up into a staircase.

"See! The other one just lead to a big hole in the floor! You don't know because you weren't there, of course, but it's meant to be a trap." She nodded to herself. "So there's the surface!"

She looked back at him.

"I'll...er...be leading you up there! To be safe!"

"Oh, you don't need to know!" the girl laughed, waving a hand dismissively. "And a trap for us! People who try to escape. Didn't I make that clear? Hmph!"

She began to trot up the stairs, bare feet patting loudly on the stone. She tossed her head back to him as he asked. She paused.

"Come on. Lets just go, alright?"

She paused again.

"Yeah, well, it doesn't matter if you are." she hissed, quickening her pace. "Come on! Are all the people on the surface as slow as you? If something comes after us you're gonna be caught."

Her eyes widened in surprise. "H-hey! You think you're fast? You're wrong!" she argued, quickening her pace. She ran alongside him, her thin legs working quickly up the stairs.

Way up at the top, there was a light. Sunlight.

"I don't know! You tell me, Mr. Surfaceman!" She squinted much worse than the boy did. She knew bright light, but...

"I've never seen something as bright as this before."

Before they knew it, they would both be trotting out of the cave, and onto the mountain path. A wind blew pass, pulling at the veil on the girls face.

"...whoa."

"...I think I'm going blind already." she said, closing her eyes. "No, that's way too bright. I can't even see anything!"

There was a loud, hollow crash from the tunnel. The girl turned around, looking down it. A blue light shined up.

"Uh-oh. Ah...run! Er..." She winced from the light. She held out a hand to him, "Help me run!"

As she was picked up, the girl let out a loud cry of surprise. She did not, however, attempt to squirm out of his arms. Right now, that, too, was suicide.

"You know that thing you first saw that I said would kill us?" she told him, squeezing her eyes shut, "That thing! I-"

Beside them, a metal claw shot into a tree, and the wood splintered, sending chips toward them. The girl cried out.

"Run faster!"

"...because you've...got me..."

She put her hands over her face. "Just keep going, okay? It can't come all the way out! Eventually it'll- aiiie!"

Another splintered tree. This one began to fall straight toward them. The girl held her breath.

Not a minute after the last attack, all went silent. Trees stopped falling, and everything ceased to be as crazy and confusing as the nature of Terra often was.

The girl's fingers slid down her face. "Are...we...safe?"

"I think. I don't hear it anymore." She pushed away, trying to get to her feet. She was still squinting. "Yeah, I think we're absolutely safe now. Maybe it can't go far in this light." She rubbed at her eyes, then pulled at the wraps. "It gets really warm up here, doesn't i- hey, are you okay?"

"...as if anyone wants to stay down there. You were just there for a few minutes, so you don't know. It's dull and horrible down there. A place like that sucks away hope for a better life." She turned around, eyes up to the sky. She was squinting still, but she could at least open her eyes.

"I have a guess that this place above might be a little better!" Her arms spread, and the breeze whipped the cowl behind her.

The girl took a step back as he stepped in front of her, but she was able to open her eyes and see a little better.

"Courteous, aren't you? Even though your speech is a bit rough. A bit strange." she said, pulling at the neck of the cowl. It was so warm. She could feel herself sweating. She debated slipping it off, however...

"Getting away would be best! They wouldn't expect me to go far. Um...what is even up here? In this world?"

"Ocean?" She whipped around to look at him, "A beach?" She seemed astounded, "I...didn't know..." Her eyes went to the ground. "Hot? No, no! I...hmm..." She slipped her fingers into the cowl, then, carefully, she pulled it off.

With the removal of the cowl and veil, the woman's face came into view. Her complexion was clear, save for a scar right above her eyebrow, and her skin lightly tan. A head of thick black hair rolled down over her shoulders, though her bangs, as white as the man's own, flipped over those purple eyes.

"That feels a lot better!"

"What? Why'd you nod?" she asked, walking ahead. She looked back at him, quirking a brow. She had soft features and a pair of pouty lips, a light dash of white freckles adorning her cheeks.

"Do you have buildings up here? A city? I heard you all had a city. Is it very far from here? I wouldn't know."

"Appreciate people..." she muttered, folding her arms with the cowl slung over her arm. She brooded over it for only a few seconds longer.

"The city? I...I would like that. Especially while its light out." she added. Night. "I'll need to find somewhere to stay, then."

The minute he grabbed her hand a light blush passed over her face. She followed, however, without further question.

"Oh, so it's over...over...there..." she stuttered, nodding, "Alright...I believe...that's acceptable."

Her fingers were limp in his hand, just because she did not know what to do otherwise...or was, perhaps, a bit too shy as well.

She looked up at the buildings in bewilderment, her jaw dropping open. This was certainly a surprise.

"How are they this big? That's impossible."

"What, your big ol' head?" she jested, narrowing her eyes. It was not apparent if she got the joke or not.

"What kind of currency do you suficers take?" she asked curiously, "If we are going to a hotel, that is definitely something I am going to know."

"Oh, no! I can't allow that! Look-" She reached under her collar, hand pushed down the center. For a moment, she seemed to have trouble looking for something. Finally, her eyes popped open. "Oh, here it is!"

Out, she drew a few coins. They were not gold, or silver, or even any other more ordinary metals. It was some kind of clear ore with diamond making up the center.

She blinked cluelessly. "Ah...alright. Are you sure? That...that's kind of unfortunate." She certainly looked a bit downtrodden by it. She hoped it could at least pay for a room and some food. "Just a bit of pretty shiny things, I suppose." She heaved a sigh.

When they had gotten to the hotel, she pursed her lips, "This is it? Simply interesting." She looked it over.

She had gotten used to more extravagant places, but she could not complain, could she?
