a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by abedlamsun

Description

Pluvius is a gnarled-looking old man, with an aquiline and thin lips, constantly curved up in a genial smile. He is missing his upper left arm and hand, as well as his right hand. The man wears a tattered, blue robe which shifts with his fluid gait. His eyes, usually closed in his smile, are a light blue that shine when exposed, rippling as if with the movements of water. He walks barefoot.

On the belt of his robe are several pouches, containing both cures for maladies and poisons to cause maladies. Other than that, Pluvius is unarmed.

Abilities
Pluvius is a trained naturopath and aquamancer. The prior lends him a broad knowledge of natural poisons and cures, which he uses to his own ends; the latter allows him control over the water in the atmosphere, and water in any state. To use his active abilities, he must either speak the incantation (in Latin), or wait three seconds as charge time. His aquamantic abilities are:

- Wall of Fog: A thick fog covers him and his surroundings up to ten feet for five seconds, concealing anything covered.
- Wall of Steam: Superheated steam surrounds him at a distance of two feet away, the perimeter of the steam extending another five feet.
- Wall of Ice: For fifteen seconds, Pluvius extends a barrier of ice two feet thick around his person.
- Dome of Ice: For ten seconds, the barrier covers his entire body.
- Suspended River: Pluvius sends a bullet-speed burst of water at his target, which he can manipulate for five seconds.
- Ice Stalagmite: Water drips from a location of Pluvius' choosing, rapidly forming a stalagmite of ice.
- Spear of Ice: The tip of Pluvius' Asclepian staff forms a ten-inch long spear-tip of ice.
- Claris Aquis: A pool of water forms at a location of Pluvius' choosing, with a high refractory rate that magnifies light that hits the pool. Those within sight of it, and who do not close their eyes, will be blinded, including Pluvius.
- Robur Aquus: At a point of dangerous contact, Pluvius may briefly send up a superdense wall of water surrounding the intended contact for five seconds.
- Aqua Celerita (Passive): Pluvius' mastery of water has led him to move through flow at barely sub-sonic speeds in short bursts when not using active abilities, or simply move with an unnatural fluidity at a somewhat-faster-than-normal pace, tied to his current physical condition. (Hence, if he has no leg, it won't work that well. He cannot do flips and acrobatics.)
- Flow Sense (Passive): Pluvius is able to feel movement and disruption in his environment as if they caused ripples within it.
- Auric Control (Passive): Pluvius is able to, at the cost of his use of active abilities for the time, manipulate his aura and work on penetrating other auras.
- Audience At the Seat of Heaven: Difficult to maneuver, Pluvius spreads a salve of Raptor Vitae onto the person, infused with the water of his will, forming a connection between that person and him.
- Takeover of the Seat of Heaven: A draining move by which Pluvius augments the will of a person to his own.
(Note: Both abilities involving the Seat of Heaven will render Pluvius' active abilities useless for a day if they fail; the latter will render them useless for a day even if it succeeds.)

Though quick, Pluvius is not trained any any martial art, nor is he very strong. At the same time, he may only use one ability at a time, or, at a cost of fifteen seconds until next ability is used, use two in rapid conjunction.

History

Background History

Pluvius was born 186 years ago on the outskirts of Pisa, Italy. His family was killed in a house fire when he was six years of age, and he was left orphaned. Pluvius, while stealing to survive in the streets of Pisa, learned the ins and outs of the darker sides of human exchange, quickly becoming a clever negotiator and manipulator through necessity and his own natural wit. While stealing some grain from a merchant, Pluvius ran into the Grandmaster Giovanni, of the Aqua Arcana de Pisa. While studying at the school, he became romantically involved with a young woman, whom he engaged. She was murdered due to his connection to the school of Aquamancers, and Pluvius began his steady descent into madness, viewing the murder not as a direct consequence of his actions, but a result of an insidious game all humans played against each other. Pluvius deduced this was either won through luck or skill, and as he possessed not luck, he decided to build his skills.

At the end of his Aquamantic schooling, Pluvius discarded of all members of the Aqua Arcana, and began to work on his own to learn more about the skill of aquamancy. Several treatises by Pluvius still exist in aquamantic schools on the concept of 'Flow' - the aquamantic expression of space-time, and 'aqua celerita' - the 'quick water' technique developed by a mastery of one's will over water extending into the practitioner's motions, allowing the person to move through the Flow effortlessly. Pluvius had also written a theoretical essay toward the end of his tutelage, 'On the Nature of Tributarian Will', describing the counter-theory that each individual person was a tributary in Flow, and could learn to navigate through it by achieving mastery over oneself.

While travelling, about 142 years ago, Pluvius stumbled upon a village where the inhabitants were infected by a parasite that consumed and spread a 'rot' through the nervous system. After observing a Naturopathy master cure them, Pluvius himself decided to request the position as apprentice. After four years, Pluvius stumbled upon a theory regarding the connection of auric networks via the seventh seat of the auric network. Pluvius attempted this theory on his master, and failed; his master died, and Pluvius assumed the mantle, but continued to travel.

Recent History

Quite by accident, Pluvius became involved in a game with the Dragons of Time, and ended up taking over one's Seat of Heaven. Yosei inhabited his mind, only able to express herself through Pluvius if the latter felt he was in extreme peril or stress. Over the course of the game, Pluvius lost his right hand, upper left arm, and left hand, during altercations with the dragon, Jugan. Pluvius ultimately lost this game after Yosei returned her state to that of an unknowing oblivion, only to have it stolen back after his second confrontation with Jugan. In exchange for surgery on his arms, a young woman, Terraa, has requested he bring the soul of a virgin, of his age (168) or higher, to her. Pluvius, seeking to culminate this game, is searching for an individual who can either supply and teach him of, or simply teach him of, neural-mechanical connective robotics. He is also working on manipulating a young woman, Regina, hoping to cultivate her as a tool for his own use.

Pluvius gently propped the head of his staff against the door to Gambit's Bar. With a light croak of effort, the gnarled old man walked in, a smile on his face the entire time. Having opened the door, Pluvius walked in, his staff supporting his left side as it thunked on the floor, also guiding him as his eyes remained closed, the friendly smile still plastered on his face. With an unnatural, fluid grace, the man brought himself up to the bar counter, sat on a stool, and looked up. "Oh boy, oh boy," he said, laughing, "that was one heavy door. Say, could an old man get some water around here?"

Pluvius never dropped the kind smile as a glass of water was placed in front of him. "Oh, thank you. Walking seems to follow an exponential increase in difficulty as you grow older." The gratitude was apparent in his voice as his thin fingers wrapped around the glass, bringing it up to his lips as they opened, falling into an 'O' that allowed his piercing blue eyes to show for a moment as he took his sip. Letting the glass fall back down, the smile reappeared, and Pluvius put the staff down to rest against the counter, leaning forward.

Pluvius let his head turn around, his closed eyes facing Regina. He caught the emotion: nostalgic, reminiscence of one's relatives. He flashed a kind smile and waved with a fluid motion of his free hand, before he turned back, pulling out a small case from a pouch on the side of his robe. Placing it on the counter, he removed a small bowl from another pouch, poured a little water into it, and then slipped some of the contents of the other case into the bowl. Rubbing it in with a finger, Pluvius mixed a little paste that stuck to the tip, and bent slightly to rub it on the sides of his feet. As he did so, he spoke to Mo'. "And what brings a Daughter of the Earth here?"

Pluvius laughed jovially, bending up and dipping his fingers into his glass of water, the paste dissolving as they entered and giving the water a light green tinge. He could already feel the fatigue from his long walk escape his legs, and the stimulating effects of oral consumption of the herb would soon have him wide awake. "Then give me a chance," he began, taking a sip halfway through, "to thank you for all the bounty she has given me. I'm afraid I would not be here were it not for her." He gave a gentle laugh, taking another small sip of the new tincture.

Pluvius turned his smiling face towards Felix, tilting his head a little bit to the side. Taking a sip as he listened to Mo', Pluvius allowed a moment to take in those intense emotions of rage. His smile never changed, nor did his stance, but Pluvius was having a ball in here: so chaotic, so disorderly. He didn't know if he even had to spread any seeds for discord to pop up. Turning back to Mo', he laughed gently. "When you're my age, rudeness is merely a given. Kindness speaks much louder though, and a single act can generally clean up an entire mess of ill-mannered intent." He chuckled as he took another sip, "I hear many people my age saying that the new generation is so rude and so ill-mannered, but the truth is that we had just as many of those back in our time. Nothing much has changed, except the people being rude."

Pluvius places a comforting hand on Regina's shoulder, still smiling to Mo', but directing his next words toward Felix. "Dear sir, she does have a point. Whatever rage you have, it must have a reason, and useless destruction rarely cures such powerful rage." He gave a light laugh, and then waved his other hand, "Please, do not let me disturb you, simply take whatever heed you will to my words." With that, he turned back to his drink, fluidly, removing his hand from Regina's shoulder and then responding to Mo'. "It's never a matter of genetics, rudeness. It's merely upbringing and how a person feels they are in this world."

Pluvius beamed widely at both Mo' and Regina. "Ah, a woman from the Orient and a Child of her Earth, I seem to be in good company." His head turned to Regina, "And you seem to be a woman who would be capable of at least protecting herself, she-whose-name-I have not yet heard." Leaning back forward, Pluvius gave a grin as he shrugged his shoulders, "My nomen is Pluvius. Plu-vi-us." He repeated the name not for example, but because he liked how it flowed on his tongue. "At any rate, dear Momo, I would very much enjoy some tea. For you, my tincture may bring nostalgia; for me, it will be this tea." He laughed softly, feeling the rage die a bit in Felix, a little disappointed, but his guise never falling.

Pluvius doesn't drop his smile for a moment, nor allow any variation in it as he shakes Regina's hand. "It is good to meet you both, such mature women. I find it a little interesting you aren't off finding suitable catches for yourself," He laughed genially, giving them the all clear to laugh along with his slightly self-deprecating humor. There was no tinge in his voice, even as he registered the unsettled feelings in Keiga and Hyde, noting at a lower level in his mind that he would have to put up some defenses against whatever probing allowed them to guess at his intentions. His eyes flickered to Felix on the ground, behind the sealed eyelids. Speaking to Mo' and Regina, as he prepared his tea with a liberal amount of honey, "Seems our 'brat' is a little under the weather."

Pluvius nods, still smiling as his eyes flick over to Keiga and then to Hyde behind his closed eyelids. Taking a sip of his tea as he listened to the flirting going on around him. With a happy sigh, he drew the teacup back down to the counter, leaning back a little bit. "Ah, this brings back so many memories." He turned his head to Hyde. Pluvius noted that one feeling of discomfort had emanated from him, and he gave a small wave to the man before addressing Regina, "It looks like you may not be searching for a match, but they're searching for you. My apologies if I touch upon a bad note here, Regina, but it seems you may not wish to deal with the problems associated with a relationship. It's correct that you would avoid one, if that is your intent."

Pluvius continues to smile despite the gunfire in the bar. Taking his teacup in his hand, he stands up fluidly, looking down at both Mo' and Regina. "As I have company," he began, "I will invite you, my company, to join me at a table elsewhere. It seems this bar is not the most peaceful of places." As he began to walk, he looked over his shoulder with a quick motion, the cup still steady in his hand. "Oh, if you wish to chat up your stranger, Momo, feel free to do so." He did not intend to ignore Regina's compliment, but felt it was best to move from the counter.

Pluvius laughed softly, bringing a hand behind him to rest gently on Regina's. "That man can handle himself, for better or for worse. He is worried, but suppresses it well; you, on the other hand, seem quite tense." He smiles at Regina before coming to the seat and sliding into it like a slow-moving current. With a nod back to Mo', Pluvius brought his hand up in a gentle farewell wave, then took a sip of his tea.

Pluvius did not laugh, but softened his smile from a jovial tone to a kind tone, placing a hand on Regina's shoulder with the assurance of a grandparent. Pluvius took another sip of his tea, and then placed it down, leaning back a little, putting not even a small amount of pressure on the woman's shoulder. He then spoke, quietly, his eyes still closed with his smile. "There is a thin line between anxiety and excitement, but both need an outlet. Besides, an old man loves new stories, as they so rarely come to him; what with him having heard most of them already." Pluvius did not allow any of his emotions to show through; an anxious woman with a gun, that was an excellent tool for mischief. The thought briefly flashed through his mind before dissipating, followed by a slightly senile thought of "I wonder if the fire is still going..."

Pluvius nodded gently, keeping his hand on Regina's shoulder. His smile still on his face, and his eyes closed, he turned his head toward the woman. He understood the nostalgic feelings, and those of loss. Then there was regret and sympathy. All good tools. "I have a feeling," he began, his voice warm and happy, "that there is more to this story. What exactly do you have so much guilt over, young one?"

Pluvius nodded, the plastered smile moving as his lips parted. His voice came out with a wave of comforting tones, and he tapped on Regina's shoulder as he spoke. "Could it be, young one," he began, his words carrying none of the probing interest that lingered in the back of his mind, "that seeing this Russian soldier endure so much put your own inexperience into perspective? I feel as if your words carry the weight of significant doubt of the self, that not only can you protect this sister of yours, but that you are also simply weak and inexperienced?" There was no accusation in it, no insult in it, only a kind undertone that conveyed that his intent was to simply help her gaze more clearly through the mirror.

Pluvius let his smile spread wider, moving his hand to her other shoulder, drawing her in with a grandfatherly side-hug. He could feel the major conflict within her, and Pluvius was ready to take it a step further. It might be fun to break this one, or to at least send her modus vivendi into a spiraling chaos. However, none of this even remotely touched his thoughts or expression.

"To those who see, wisdom is a constant thing. It is instead what is done with that wisdom that decides the man. Take this lesson from me, as I've learned a bit during my time on this world. A person cannot hold oneself down to a single goal that involves anyone else; one must constantly look after one's comfort and desires first, and that way be strong enough to deal with threats to others. One must also, however, never forget that we are all completely alone in this world, even if we interact with each other; one is always separate from another simply because we are all separate. If you are not yet strong enough to protect the will of others, only protect your own."

Pluvius grinned, seemingly jubilant at her breakthrough. The first pressure had been applied, and he now brought to bear the second, leaning her head on his shoulder gently. The grandfatherly effect was now much stronger, and even he felt a bit paternal in his actions. Pluvius kept back the thoughts as he cradled Regina, a surge of pride at his skillful acting, even as his own expression registered nothing but parental affection and kindness.

"You must realize your own limits, and not try to break through them. There are roles in this world we must all meet, and only suffering comes to those around us and ourselves when we try to work against this script that we are given."

Pluvius registered uncertainty. All he needed to do was guide her away from the focus of her life, to plant a seed of doubt that would disrupt her own understanding of her place in her world. Speaking with comforting tones to Regina, Pluvius answered, "You are the only one who can learn them, young one. Perhaps you and your sister are not meant to appear in the same scenes. Perhaps certain players will exeunt while other players carry on their own plots. From what I can see, your story carries you from the obligations of your sister."

Pluvius smiles gently, his gnarled old hand rubbing Regina's back with all the comforting grace of a grandfather. His tea, still piping-hot, was picked up by his other hand. He took a brief sip, the only clue to his detachment from the young woman's feelings. However, the actions of elderly persons were generally far removed from the world anyway, so it probably wouldn't come under too much suspicion.

As Regina trailed off, Pluvius began again, "The most difficult thing for someone to come to terms with is that the script has already been written, and they are but actors with their roles to play in life. The Playwright expects the play to go correctly, and not even Fortuna can save those souls which interfere with it. I say this for your benefit young one..." Pluvius leaned forward, his eyes open and his face serious, as if imparting something of deadly importance, "...do not tamper with the strings the Fates weave." As quickly as the expression appeared, it was replaced by his kindly old-man visage.
