History

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

President, Charles Henry Maynard, Sr. (D)
First Lady, Ruth Nwosu-Maynard
First Family: Charles Henry Maynard, Jr. (12); Elaine Maynard (4)

The first interracial couple to grace the White House, President Maynard is an American of British descent whose prominent family has been in America for almost ten generations. Wealthy and influential, they have included several senators, governors, and Cabinet members, as well as carrying a legacy of attending Yale University. His wife, Ruth, hails from a Central African family, and they have two children, Charles Jr., who goes by Henry, and Elaine, who is affectionately known as Lainey. President Maynard is a fairly tall man with rugged features and a neatly combed receding hairline, with aristocratic features. Ruth is taller than her husband, with a chocolate complexion and deep-set eyes.

Vice President, Abigail McKinley (R)
Vice President McKinley is the widow of Rupert McKinley, a former Senator from another powerful, wealthy family. She is a formidable woman in her own right with ties to the Tea Party movement, and some controversial policies that more often than not slip into legislation passing through Congress. She is a tall woman with a square face, angled jaw, aristocratic features, short-cropped blond hair, and an imperious manner about her.

Chief of Staff, Lauren Llinás
Chief of Staff Lauren Llinás is a Honduran woman, the third of nine children in an immigrant family raised in New York. The first in her family to attend college, Lauren became involved in politics at an early age. Lauren is associated with the Democratic Party, and has served in the Senate and in the Governor's office in New York. She is a petite woman, slender, with long, wavy dark brown hair, and large, expressive eyes.

Special Agent Eugene Kaufman (Secret Service)
Assigned to the presidential protection detail, Eugene is a senior agent of the US Secret Service. He travels with President Maynard nearly everywhere the President goes. Eugene is a tall, athletic man with carefully combed brown hair, angled features, and small, round eyes, Eugene typically dresses in a conservative dark suit and sunglasses, like most Secret Service Agents.

Attorney General, Naazmat Chakladar

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Evan S. Drummond
Born in Promised Land, South Carolina, Evan Drummond's parents moved to Brookline, Massachusetts when he was two, and enrolled him in a Montessori school. By the time ninth grade rolled around, Evan was attending Walnut Hill with a major in music. He played the cello. Evan was accepted to the Boston Conservatory with a full scholarship and graduated with several offers from internationally acclaimed orchestral groups; however, it was on an international tour that included stops in several African countries that convinced Evan he wanted to bring about justice for the types of individuals who hurt one another. He became a federal prosecutor, and is the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Drummond is a fairly short man, albeit effeminately slender, with a round face, droopy eyes, and a receding hairline. His hair is thick and white, lending him a scholarly appearance.

Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Christiana J. Taylor
Raised in Montana, Christiana's family was one of very few Black families in a small Midwestern town. Christiana's older sister became involved in the Civil Rights movement, while she became dedicated to criminal justice, attending law school at John Marshall Law School, later becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Christiana is a tall, shapely woman with carefully straightened hair framing her heart-shaped face. She typically dresses in conservative suits for court.

Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Oliver L. Goldstein

Public Defender for the District of Columbia, Katherine R. Gilliam
Born and raised in Idaho, Kate Gilliam expressed an interest in law as early as middle school, and her parents encouraged her budding interest. She graduated from Georgetown summa cum laude, and earned her JD from Harvard Law School, where she was a Rhodes scholar. Kate's parents strongly hoped for her daughter to become a district attorney, but she turned around on them and was hired in Washington DC at the Federal Public Defender's office. Kate is a stocky woman of average height with a round face and Slavic features, a mole on her forehead, and brown hair worn to shoulder length.

Assistant Public Defender for the District of Columbia, Gray H. Sanderson
Gray Sanderson was born and raised in Utah in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. While attending Brown University as an undergraduate student, Gray became a militant atheist and civil rights advocate, particularly calling out the conservative right-wing movement on issues of race equality, gender equality, domestic violence, and institution-sponsored intolerance of other groups. Gray was eventually employed the Federal Public Defender's office in Washington DC, after a short term as a lobbyist, and assigned to the appellate division. Gray is a fairly tall man, somewhat rugged and stocky, with pockmarked features, curly gray hair, thick, bushy eyebrows, and a drooping, rectangular-shaped face.

Assistant Public Defender for the District of Columbia, Allison Cain

Secretary of Homeland Security, Rawan Mekkaoui
An American of Iranian descent, with attractive, aristocratic-looking features, Rawan is a graduate Syracuse University, and the author of several well-researched reports on homeland security issues. He was appointed Secretary of Homeland Security by President Maynard in response to the need for high-level officials with firsthand knowledge of the issues abroad, particularly in the Middle East.

Secretary of State, Annmarie Yore
A striking blond of Norwegian descent, Annmarie's policies are conciliatory and pacifistic. She is well-traveled, and speaks four languages fluently. Annmarie is best known for her trips into areas the State Department otherwise advises Americans against traveling to, including North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Sudan, Cuba, the Occupied Territories, Iraq, and Peru.

Secretary of Defense, Herbert Selian
A man of average height and weight who looks like he would fit in better in a college library somewhere, Herbert served in several wars and received distinguished honors and medals in all of them, though his appearance is all to the contrary of what would be expected of someone with such military training.

Secretary of Health and Human Services, Julius Braga

United States of America FBI Special Agent Scott DeLong, a tall African-American assigned to counterterrorism, along with FBI Special Agent Mary Ann Wagoner, a fairly nondescript Anglo-Saxon woman assigned to violent crimes, and CIA agent Ghufran Xinavane, a beautifully sculpted Nigerian woman strode collectively into the bar, the three of them searching for FBI Special Agent Casie Schwartz, the partner of renowned counterterrorism agent Natalie Schultz, who had reportedly been seen in the bar earlier in the day.

The same reports had also mentioned something about an unfortunate explosion and the possible death of Agent Schwartz, as well as something about a terrorism case she was working on. In any case, Emma Landers had decided that the three all ought to see what could be found of Agent Schwartz, thus resulting in the three federal agents looking very much the part as they strode inside, with the exception of Ghufran, who looked more like a runway model than an assassin.

United States of America Scott and Mary Ann turned to Doryn. Scott's eyebrow rose. "Yeah?" he asked, as the two of them made their way over to the man who had called them; Ghufran strode up to the bar counter, looking for the tender.

United States of America Scott and Mary Ann simultaneously drew their weapons, standard Glock .22's, though they didn't aim them at anyone, just pointed towards the floor. "Collecting blood money is actually a crime," Scott remarked.

"I suggest you both stand down," Mary Ann added, throwing a glance over her shoulder to Ghufran. "We don't want any unnecessary bloodshed."

United States of America "Yeah?" Mary Ann said, turning to face Teris. "What did you just call me?" Her eyes narrowed, her finger removing the safety on her gun.

Scott kept his weapon trained on Grenville. "Drop it," he commanded, his voice flat and direct.

United States of America Ghufran turned slowly to face Marlene, her bangles jangling with the movement, gaze dropping to the shorter woman. "Just looking for information," she said in a bored tone.

"You think?" Scott said to Katy. To Grenville, he said, "Son, you don't want to do that. You want to put it down." Slowly, his hand drew his other weapon, so that he now had two guns out pointed in two different directions, at Grenville and Jazmin.

Mary Ann turned to Marlene. "A little help would be nice." Her guns were aimed at Doryn and Teris. To Jair, she said, "Yeah, I'd appreciate that."

United States of America Scott DeLong and Mary Ann Wagoner simultaneously dropped to defensive fighting stances, firing at Teris and Grenville, as they ducked halfway behind the table where Doryn had been sitting moments before, protected by Jair's shield, as they fired soundlessly.

Meanwhile, Ghufran Nawal Xinavane had noticed the outbreak of the fight, as she decided whether to go for her gun or her knives, now or later. As everyone's attention seemed to be on the gunslingers, Ghufran slipped quietly over the barcounter, dropping behind it as she took out two of her poisoned knives, preparing to throw them at Jazmin, whom she saw aiming a sniper rifle at Scott. Ghufran threw them, one after the other, in wide arcs, so that if she wasn't hit by one, she would likely be by the other. The poison would induce paralysis and unconsciousness within twenty seconds if they hit.

United States of America Ghufran then slipped quietly from the bar, or as quietly as she could, with her silver bangles, though they weren't quite audible over the sounds of lots of shooting people. Meanwhile, Scott and Mary Ann looked at each other, then ran like HELL from the bar, heads ducked, returning fire as they went so they could get out.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Amira Qahtani of the Magical Enforcement Agency Wing City Field Office strode into the bar. She had heard much about Gambit's Bar, that much untoward magical and other supernatural activity often occurred here, and as the MEA's mission covered all supernatural and magical affairs, Amira had decided it was worth stopping by, perhaps familiarizing herself with the place. Agent Qahtani was a woman of average height, dressed in a nice, dark suit and a matching hijab that complemented the color of her dress shirt. She stepped inside, nodding to Officer Steward before opening the door, looking around as her eyes adjusted to the dim light.

United States of America Amira Qahtani took a seat at the bar, when she saw two MEA agents not so subtly stride into the bar, and waved them off, hissing in her earpiece, "Get your sorry asses outside; I'm trying to actually meet people here!" before they looked at each other, slinking outside again. Amira turned back to the counter, smiling and nodding, as she considered the menu, the bounty board, the patrons. What to do, who to speak to.

United States of America Amira Qahtani noted Meldraenei leaving, Kara leaving, and Sammie entering. All seemed intriguing somehow, for various reasons, though Amira was content to watch at the moment, nursing a cold club soda as she watched, wondering whether she would be able to speak to one or another of the bargoers. Gambit's had been in the news a lot recently, as the site of several confrontations apparently involving the MEA.

United States of America : Amira Qahtani realized she recognized Kara Drasimann, though she wasn't sure from where, not immediately. Since assuming her new post as Acting Special Agent in Charge, Amira had been inundated with case files and briefings on cases and persons of interest she hadn't even known freaking existed, let alone was expected to deal with and coordinate the investigations concerning. Amira's watchful gaze then fell upon Eva Lazaro. This one she knew. On this one, there was a file five inches thick at MEA Headquarters. Amira frowned.

United States of America : Amira Qahtani was alone. She wondered if this was normal. Did bar patrons typically associate only with pre-established contacts, or were newcomers simply ostracized from the outset? It could also be that Amira had been identified as an MEA agent, or from the press release bearing her name as Agent Fields's replacement. She shook her head, her club soda almost gone. Amira wanted to see whether she could speak to someone here, but if no one approached her...

United States of America : Amira Qahtani looked up when Glenn Henning entered the bar, the man appearing as though he'd been hard at work, of the physically demanding sort. He also just happened to have sat down at the stool next to the MEA agent, who nodded to him. "Good evening," Amira said in a neutral, even tone.

United States of America : Amira Qahtani returned Glenn's smile with a small, congenial upturning of her lips, nodding to the Swedish man. "It's quite possible," she replied, shrugging lightly. Glenn was at least a head taller than Amira was, though still nearly an entire ruler's length shorter than the MEA Director, who had been conspicuously absent from DC for several days now. "My name's Amira, and yours?"

United States of America drank the last of her club soda, setting the glass down on the counter as she turned to face Glenn directly, shaking the man's hand, her own handshake firm and well-practiced. "The pleasure is mine," Amira responded, noting that she shared something with Glenn. Neither were from America. Amira had emigrated when she was eight, and become naturalized along with her parents at twelve, and her own voice was tinged with the faintest vestiges of an accent, though she had nearly eradicated it from her otherwise flawless English. "Do you come here often?"

United States of America : Amira Qahtani too was happy that someone had finally spoken to her, though technically, she had initiated the conversation. "Yes, I know it well," Amira said, nodding. Since she was now Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Wing City Field Office, and had been here for a few years, it was part of the job description to know the surrounding areas intimately. "I've actually never been," she said, laughing lightly, "and was hoping you'd be able to tell me a bit about the place."

"My religion forbids the drinking of alcohol." She flushed slightly, unsure exactly how well she had managed to pull that off. Sometimes Amira simply ended up in awkward situations, and this, it seemed, was one of them. She sighed, letting her smile slip ever so slightly. "So are you from Banida? Your accent seems more Scandinavian." And Amira cursed herself for sounding like a damn linguistics student - or worse, a creepy stalker.

"But if you have information on a crime, you ought to let me know, and I'll see what I can do." Amira paused. Charles Maynard had decided that Robert Edwards was not the right person to appeal before Quorum, considering his anger management issues and other such problems, and so decided instead to send Naazmat Chakladar, contacting the LDA before departing America to inform them of her trip as Attorney General of the United States. Chakladar was ordered to depart via Stargate for Langara, and given a briefing from the FBI before she went.

Meanwhile, two MEA agents came to Drakus Flavaar's cell to take him to his arraignment before Judge Merrill Nielson, taking him through a warren of hallways before emerging in the courtroom in the American Interests building here in Wing City. Flavaar was directed to the defense table, where an unsmiling Rupert Hagopian sat behind and to the side of him, winking at Drakus's approach. The bailiff spoke after several other people had arrived as well. "All rise, the Honorable Merrill Nielson presiding." Nielson strode into the courtroom and motioned for everyone to sit, as the bailiff spoke, "Docket number 347, People v. Drakus Flavaar."
