Introduction
Background/History:
Long ago, there was peace. Or relative peace, at least. Modern technology had reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, the human race was so focused on their widgets and gadgets that they forgot about the environment. They cut down trees, bore through the earth, polluted the ground, seas and skies.
Soon, that would come to bite them in the behind. Because of global warming, great and terrible storms tore through the land. Hurricane, tornado, thunderstorm, tsunami. They tore at the earth, washed away land, and eventually caused the sea levels to rise and cover up almost all the land of the Earth.
Now, land is no more. There are a couple islands left, but almost nobody inhabits them. Rather, humanity dwells either deep beneath the ocean or on it, on boat or raft cities. Below the surface level, there are great artifacts and relics from the Old Age to be found, but also a great danger. The storms caused the rise of sea monsters, strange and ravenous beings who hunger for human flesh.
The Present World:
The world as it is is nothing like it was, the cities have long since flooded over. What exists as cities now are large harbors, where trade and commerce are based on an ancient barter system. Land is almost nonexistent, so farm animals have gone extinct. People have devolved to hunter-gatherers once again to attain fish, boats have become the major transportation.
People/Organizations:
There are two main groups that humanity has made for themselves; the Surfacedwellers, and the Deepdwellers. The Surfacedwellers, as their name suggests, live on the boat and raft cities of Earth. They hunted and gather food. They tend to stick together as a community, because without each other, what would they be?
The Deepdwellers are another matter. They decided to eschew the surface world and plunged deep to the depths of the oceans. They have made great advances in technology under there, and have rediscovered old relics from the Old Age. On occasion some Deepdweller merchants come to the surface momentarily to sell their wares to Surfacedwellers, who either treat the relics with trepidation or greed.
The reason for the two different groups was mainly due to the Sea Monsters. The Surfacedwellers feared these creatures, but the Deepdwellers (or who would become them) were fascinated by them, and wanted to study and live with them. The Surfacedwellers deemed them as mad, and shunned them. However, their hatred has started to water down.
Of course, these are but the two main groups. There are many different cultures, both in and out of the Big Two.
Geography:As the world is flooded, it is a reverse Pangea. Most of the planet is a vast ocean, with spare islands scattered throughout.
Bestiary: There are hundreds of monsters that reside in the seas, but there are a small number that are the most notorious. They reside in what used to be the seven seas, each lording over them. In the East Pacific is lorded over by the kraken, a monstrous octopus. In the Arabian Sea is the Leviathan, a massive shark that can swallow ships whole. The North Atlantic has the Charybdis, a massive anglerfish like beast that lures in its prey only to devour them. To the North sea lies the Karkinos, a titanic crab that has killed every whale that used to live there. In the South Atlantic is the World serpent, a massive snake that only emerges to eat whatever it sees. Finally in the Mediterranean sea lies a beast nobody knows what it looks like, it is known only as Pthyrios. Every lord of the sea has numerous underlings that pale in comparison to their enormity and scale.
Character Options:
In The Ocean Hunters, you can play as either a Surfacedweller or a Deepdweller.
If you choose to be a Surfacedweller, you live on a boat city, raft city, harbors, or possibly one of the small islands. You have semi-modern tech. Mostly in armor and weapons, like pistols, rifles and kevlar. Guns don't really do much against fish, however. Most people carry spears, nets, bows and harpoon guns. They have little to no electricity. Electric devices are exceedingly rare to find, and even then they are either beyond repair or need a generator. There is little oil too. Oil became very rare for Surfacedwellers, except when traded for with something else with the Deepdwellers. Most boats are sailboats; there are only a few motorboats left. Sometimes, gunpowder is crafted by stuff in the ocean and driftwood, and used in guns. But as stated before, most people don't use guns.
If you choose to be a Deepdweller, you get very different things. You spend almost all of your time under the sea. Usually, you don't go anywhere without your trusty deep sea wetsuit, breather, and hydraulic harpoon gun. But even Deepdwellers need time out of the water. Thus, they built watertight, dome-like cities underwater. They have made great advances in technology, mostly in hydrodynamics. They have been able to recover most of the Old Age technology. They occasionally go up to the surface to trade with the Surfacedwellers.
There are also a third people. The Seafolk. A few of the more degenerated Deepdwellers had taken up having heathen dallying with some of the sea monsters. Thus, the Seafolk were born. They are shunned by the humans because of their strange appearance, abilities and origin.

"Ma! I get it! I'm a grown adult quit lecturing me!" Jupiter yelled back at her mother, who had another mouth full to say about that. Jupiter rubbed her temples before shooing her mother away so she could get ready for the day. "That woman is going to be the death of me." She said to herself as she started getting dressed in her usual jumpsuit, pulling her brown shoes up. She walked to the black stone bowl she had sitting on her desk, sitting beside it was a matching black stone vase with a spout on the top. She lifted it up by the oval shaped handle and tipped it over, watching the water pour out into the bowl. Jupiter then washed her face, and ran water through her hair to make it cleaner. Since this was the only form of bathing she would get for the next couple days.
Jupiter left the house in a hurry thanks to her mother, she dragged along a cart full of her catch from her ship to her mother's shop at the marketplace. She was greeted by several neighbors that knew her as only her mother's daughter. However the ones that knew that she stood up for the sea folk all those years ago still to this day gave her strange looks. However her mother had paid them very well to keep their mouths shut, Jupiter still had a feeling whispers about her always followed. Once she would get to her mother's stand, she would stock her baskets and repeat the whole process.
"Alright, Ma. That's the last load. You should be good for a couple days." Jupiter said as she wiped the sweat from her forehead before it got in her eye.
"Your not my only employee Jup, go enjoy the rest of your week." She said, handing her a pouch, heavy of coins. Jupiter smiled, proud of herself for a much larger profit. She hugged her mother goodbye and headed back for her boat, wanting to get out to sea before too many people came out to the docks.
Soon, he promised himself, Soon, you can kill all those murdering, betraying bastards. But for now you must wait. You can't go.
Yet.
Jupiter happily skipped to her boat, her backpack filled with the usual but also a large amount of food for the rest of the week. She hoped all this food would last her for entire trip, not wanting to come back to the market for a while. In this case she had planned to visit an island not too far from here. Most fishermen have cordoned the island due to empty traps and nets, currently the closest a boat could get to the island was 2 miles only from the south of the island. Every other direction was nothing but large mountain clifs, no possible way of getting onto the island from any other side, than the open beach to the south.
Much to Jupiter's knowledge-and because she is way to curious for her own good she knew that this island had two sandbars so far. She had not yet made it to the actual island yet. The first sand bar was covered in long sharp rocks, that made it impossible to swim through and made it hard to get a boat across without damaging it. The next 500 yards were these sharp rocks, however because Jupiter is a very small human she was able to find a path to swim through, from there she would paddle board the rest of the way.
As Jupiter turned up the dock she knew her boat was stationed at she saw a familiar boat a couple before hers or down the row from her, depending where one was standing on the docks. As Jupiter's eyes rose from the boat to the man on the boat she smiled to herself. How does a man that old look that good? Jupiter thought to herself as she ran into a tall wooden pole-she almost fell off the dock in the process-gracefully trying to recover.
As Jupiter rubbed her forehead, mentally shaming herself. Jupiter stood up dusting herself off, just as Samuel spoke. She laughed out loud, it was a shaky laugh. "Ha, yes. I've given up on society and have decided to feed myself to the fishes!" She joked sarcastically back at Samuel, smiling. "No, I think my lack of sleep is catching up with me. I'll sleep when I'm dead." She shrugged, her arms going up then back down, her hands slapped against the sides of her legs.
After tying up his boat to the docks, Wes stepped off with a large canvas sack thrown over his back. He walked past Samael and Jupiter.
"Sam!" He greeted with his typical big smile. "Long time no see. How's business these days? Remind me to stop by your stand later, I got something you might be interested in. I'll also need to stock up on fish for my next trip." He said as he passed by and headed to the market square to do some trading of his own if he could find some one interested.

FYI when I said he had a fruitful journey, I meant he was able to get a lot of relics, fruitful didn't mean literal fruit

Jupiter smiled at Samuel's joke about the sea folk hearing her. "I won't be surprised if they are watching our every movements." She replied with a genuine smile. She looked out at the sea and recalled a time she was first beaten up by the other kids her age because she was different. She shook the imagine of that horrible day out of her head as another gentleman came by and greeted Samuel. After he continued on with his way, her eyes fell back to Samuel. "It was nice chatting with you. Be safe out there." She told him before she skipped away, rushing to her boat which was still in vision and probably conservation from Samuel's boat.
Jupiter made her way inside her little house, putting the food she had just gotten away in their little cabinet space. She secured the cabinets with rope that was mounted in the hard wooden walls of her tiny house. She had her giant cloth door to her one room open, her small bed was folded away so the room didn't appear to look like a bedroom. This was one of her favorite boats, her mother always told her to have a back up, sadly Jupiter's back up didn't have a living courtiers for her, so she'd have to return to her mother's home everyday.
"Wes! Good to see ya, man. You tell the boss that you're back yet?" The guy asked.
"Hey Tony! No, not yet. I just pulled in. I was hoping to get back out as soon as possible, I got some good leads on the legendary beasts and some possible information from the old world. I'm just stopping here to do some trading and get enough food to make the journey."
"Better let him know you're here or he'll charge you double for rental space."
"On my way there now." Wes smiled as he found his way to a small little shanty where he just walked in. The door opened into an office where a short fat little man sat going over paperwork.
"Ah, hello Wes. Back from your last journey I see. Did you find anything good?"
"Yup, just here looking to rent a stand for about two weeks at the most. Gonna unload then get back out there."
"Well what have you got for me?"
Wes took the bag off his shoulder and rummaged through it before he pulled out a small, grey, rectangular, plastic device with a small square in the center made of a transparent plastic. He set the thing down on the desk.
"According to my source, this was a portable electronic video game device called a 'Game Boy'. A cartridge with a game would be inserted into the slot on the back and a video game would appear on the screen."
The fat man picked up the device and looked it over.
"Okay, this should cover a few weeks of rent. You can take stand 4-B."
"Thanks boss." He said before leaving the office and heading to his stand and spreading his treasure across it.

Jupiter was fast putting her items away, careful not to break anything she had just gotten. She double checked that everything was well tied down and pulled the massively thick door down, scrapping her elbow as it came down, slamming into place. She winced, rubbing her elbow as she made her way around the boat, getting ready to go back out to sea. Her journey was not far, an hour or two at longest away from where her mother lived. She was excited to go to the island that so many fishermen and adventurists had given up on.
The unnamed island had been on her mind for months, this trip was everything to her. Nobody had been able to get their boat within close enough range to this island and then been able to wiggle through the sharp rocks. Thankfully Jupiter was on the small side, she had gone as close as the second sand bar, but today she would be able to walk those beaches. Her curiosity often got the better of her, however today she was determined to figure out what exactly was living there, what resources-if any- could she salvage there? The different possibilities that came to mind were endless.
