Introduction

A big thanks to nowfaleena and EverFrost for helping out here and there.

The Rise of the Tari

The world is young. So young that the men who inhabit it name it only as what it is - "Earth", "The World", "The Land of Men". In the dialect of the Tari, the name for "Man's Earth" is Ammisar and out of all people, they alone deserve the right to choose it.

In the Cradle, it was the Tari who first learned to do away with the nomadic lifestyle of travelling the known World to follow their food. It was they who discovered that by controlling the source of food of sheep and cattle, the animals could be tamed, thus negating the need to pursue them. It was they who discovered that when the rains fell on fertile soil kicked up by rampaging herds of beasts, crops began to crow in their place. And it was they who discovered that by shaping stone and mud, one could form bricks and use them to build...

In an age long ago, one particular Chief of the Tari brought together separate family tribes and formed the basis of the first Kingdom; impressing them with his intelligence, charisma and apparent favour with the Gods. They named him King Vaylen and followed in his footsteps as he led them south to the Lake of Ghosts and began to build the first city of bleach white stone.

This is the story of the founding of Ammisar's first Empire; the story not of King Vaylen and his trusted companions... But of their children, the men and women born in the foundations of the world's first city. The men and women who have to shoulder the monumental task of completing what their parents set out to do barely fifteen years ago... And how they contend with the uncertainty of the Tari's future, after King Vaylen is murdered in the night...

"It was justice I spoke of, not trade" Myr remarked. "Those aren't quite alike. Good day, good king, and good luck." Smiling about her own cleverness, Myr bowed and left the scene, in search of a situation that she might turn into one with people giving her food.

"These are strange times" she said to herself. "Great and just kings get killed in the night, and then young kings tell crazy beggars they'd stay to chat if they had time." She added more and more drama to her tone. This was fun! "The wise and the strong walk into each other backwards, I wonder what else will come tumbling down? Is this an exception, or a return to natural order? Will these white rocks sink back into the earth, and if so, will I be caught below them? And listen to me, I should be on a stage! A healer, who acts ill in the head, a playwright who can't write! Wouldn't that be a show?" People were staring at her, a mother dragged away her small child that was pointing at Myr, who began to strike poses. "Yes! Be afraid of the strange and foreign one! Hide your child, lest the fool dares to treat her scraped knee! Double check your door at night, lest you become like a king! These are strange times, Myr tells you so!" Suddenly she returned to a normal standing pose, and addressed the staring crowd in a neutral tone. "So, to sound like a raving lunatic, you just describe your thoughts and what you see in big words. Now, does anyone have any wounds or illnesses? I'm a healer, and I assure you I am sane."

Horus turned away from the curious scene and followed his King towards the Senate Chambers. He quickened his pace to match the King's stride and turned to him as they made their way through the crowd.

"I'm flattered that your father considered me loyal, sire," He began as he edged past the citizens crowding Tenszar, "But if I may, I hope that you will evaluate me yourself, and not just based on your father's thoughts." He scratched his chin in thought, "At any rate, I am quite glad you are ready to begin work, there is much to be done. With the unfortunate turn of events I am afraid that the Senate has become a hall squabbling animals. They need you to lead them, sire."

Horus finished his thoughts and studied Tenszar. I have no doubt in his ability, Horus mused in his thoughts, He will be perhaps an even better leader than his father; but I fear the older senators may try and take advantage of his inexperience. Horus pushed his way through a group of merchants heading for the King and looked up ahead. The familiar shape of the Senate Hall rose above the mass of people and shops. Sunlight reflected off the bright white stone, making the building seem almost magical in the day.

"Home." Horus muttered to himself as they drew closer to the building.

“My friend, what brings you here?” Kadhek gathered his belongings into a bag composed of animal hide.

“What do you mean ‘what brings you here?’ I always come and meet my teacher after finishing my work,” Fi’irios laughed.

“Mmh, perhaps right after gazing at your beloved priestess…hmm?”

Fi’irios’ ears reddened as a sign of embarrassment.

“And I’m not your teacher,” Kadhek chuckled as he closed up for the day, heading towards the exit after Fi’irios.

“She’s not my beloved,” Fi’irios scoffed. The two passed by several pots on display at one of the many bazaars.

“Are you sure? You’ve spied on her, for say…the last five years?” Kadhek grinned.

“Three! It’s three years!”

"Bah!" Kadhek dismissed that with a wave following several chortles.

“Whatever, she’s a priestess…and you’re…you’re…you’re Fi’irios,” Kadhek ambled alongside Fi'irios.

“She’s beautiful…besides…why are you such a..uh…a um…,”

“A skeptic?” Kadhek interrupted, “Well,” he paused.

“It is a school of thought, one of the many I teach.”

“Why exactly do you have to teach that particular one?”

“Well…would you rather I taught nothing then?”

Fi’irios chuckled, “That’s not what I meant.”

“So, how goes your apprenticeship? I trust you haven’t forged any tools of destruction yet?”

“Those would be weapons, not tools. No I haven’t forged any of those tools yet.”

There was a slight lull in the conversation as they walked down the crowded streets before noon.

“I still can’t believe he was murdered…” Kadhek spoke.

“Quiet! Don’t say that out loud," Fi'irios searched for anyone who heard Kadhek's thought.

“I did not,” Kadhek lowered his voice. Such talk was bound to arouse suspicion where none should be.

“I…can’t believe it either. In the middle of the night…why would anyone desire the death of such a great man?”

“Perhaps he had devils of his own…”

Imes raised a black eyebrow before chuckling. “Poe and I do not share the same language anymore then you share the language of that of a common dog. However, even animals have emotions, and if you are observaint enough you can guess what they are thinking. It isn't sharing a language though.” She said, petting the ravens black feathers. She was used to this question, the people that saw her talking to her companion always seemed to jump to the conculsion that she was a witch. Which was slightly true but they were wrong on the language account.

The woman gave the man a small bow, her wild black hair covering her face as she got permission to leave. “Thank you prince, and I, like the many citizens here, hope that your father's murder is found. And thank you for not arresting me either.”

She straightened herself up, pushing some stray hair behind her head before grinning at him, and slowly turning around, walking away as her head was cast upwards towards the night sky.

The sun had risen in the late hours of the morning before Bal'roch made his way back into the city. His steps heavy from the burdens he carried, the hunter nonetheless managed to return one of the guards' nods his way. Once counted among their number, he'd left. With the scrutiny on his ideas for the guardsmen in general, one could say he'd been forced out. Shrugging at the mocking smile he got in return, he simply hefted his weapons, bags of furs and meat once more and shouldered on.

The man made his way for the trader's square. He had the inklings of another idea, and needed the materials. And of course, a fairly decent haul to get started on it.

“Enough of that affair, let’s get back to you,” Kadhek turned to his friend, “You should marry her.”

“What? I’m not ready…” Fi’irios protested weakly. He didn’t have any real reasons, excuses rather, to stave off marriage.

“’Not ready?’ You’re five years too old to say you aren’t ready, at the age of fourteen a Tarian has come to the appropriate age to marry,” Kadhek paused and smiled at Fi’irios, “I think you’re more than ready.”

“But..” Fi’irios mumbled.

“’But’ what? Ah, I forgot …you can’t dance,” Kadhek chuckled. Fi’irios was about to open his mouth, but he was cut off by Kadhek, “My apologies, everyone can dance, but you in particular, don’t like to dance. How awkward.”

“I can dance just fine, it’s just I find the idea of cavorting about the ground. I’d look very…”

“Awkward?” Kadhek inputted.

“Awk..ward? Is that another school of thought?” Fi’irios turned a glance at his old friend, perplexed at the word.

“Great Goddess Fertilia, I hope not. I teach wise men not dancers.” Kadhek chuckled before roughly cradling Fi’irios under his arm.

“You two were practically meant for each other,” Kadhek was barely holding on, he felt like he could burst out laughing before the crowded streets, but as a teacher he had a bit more decency to hold it in.

“Funny,” Fi’irios narrowed his eyes directly at Kadhek; he knew it was a shot. “I’m sure if anybody knew, it would be you,” Fi’irios arched his eyebrows in a sardonic manner. Kadhek simply replied with a smile before he continued on.

“You’d better start liking the dance now, or you’ll end up growing grey alone,” Kadhek warned him comically as they passed by some produce stands.

“Dancing beyond nightfall…” Fi’irios groaned, “How tiring would that be?” the thought of dancing long past the moonlight did not disgust Fi’irios, but it did make him feel sore.

“Very tiring indeed,” Kadhek shook his head with a wide grin of mockery.

“It makes me grow weary, but at this age, I’m surprised she hasn’t been betrothed yet,”

Kadhek raised his eyebrows. “Hmm, perhaps she has been spying on you as well?”

Fi’irios scoffed at the notion and pushed him aside in a flippant manner while they continued walking.

“If only one could express love and receive the blessing of the Gods in a different way,” Fi’irios mused to himself.

“Hmm, if there was a different way, perhaps you’ll find it. Run along good man, run along to your forge!” Kadhek smiled slyly as he continued on his own path.

“I’ll see you tomorrow Kadhek,” Fi’irios turned a corner and slipped through the crowds, on his way back to his father’s forge.

"I'm sure that your actions to come will dictate your standing," he replied; talking calmly as he strode through the busy streets. "But until then, I would be a fool not to start with the foundations my father spent fifteen years building. This place, this culture, is the first of its kind. No other such settlement exists as large or as advanced as we; we're the dawn of a new, brilliant era and I need to make sure the men and women who build it are worthy of remembrance."

He watched as the Senate rose before them, high above the surrounding buildings upon a mound of white stone and exactly fifty steps to climb to reach the pillar-laden entrance.

"My mother despises this place. She says that one day I will come to also despite it, as a pit of snakes and spiders. I hope that her prophesy turns false, or at least falls short of the target."

He began to climb; Senators, Soldiers and Citizens alike stepped aside to allow him higher. The chambers were not fully open to the public, but the outside and the public forum within (where administrators received feedback from the common man and relayed it to the meeting halls beyond) were often teeming with men, women and children of all ages and occupations.

This is why, that when a certain foreigner had climbed those steps barely ten minutes beforehand, he hadn't been stopped. Looked upon with slight suspicion, perhaps, but the people were very aware that no such law yet existed where ostracization was a vald path.

This, perhaps, was about to change.

As the new king climbed higher, the foreigner began to descend and wound a cream turban around his face like a mask, while brandishing a four-inch bronze blade in his hand. The assassin began to quickly move...

Down the steps he ran, two at a time, before leaping forwards and falling down upon Tenszar, who was pre-occupied with watching his feet so he didn't fall. The two stumbled, fell and rolled in a scrawling heap back down to the street below.

At the bottom, one man pinned the other. Punches were thrown by the one underneath, followed by a slash of a blade that the prince could only block with his naked hand. He grabbed the hand and the knife within it and wrestled as hard as he could.
A rock was thrown by a nearby man, which struck the assassin in the head and caused him to stumble to the ground. He released the knife, but Tenszar's left hand and wrist had been struck and royal blood began to spread quickly over the stone ground.

The assassin regained his composure, watching as two dozen guards began to quickly run to fill in the surrounding area and come to their King's aid. The foreigner made the choice to run and delay his death. Against such numbers, with Tenszar still alive, he knew he could not succeed witout throwing away what he was not yet willing to leave. The would-be killer thus turned, pushed his way through the growing crowd and disappeared into the city as many a guard began the chase.

At the bottom of the stairs, Tenszar could only tightly clutch at his wound with his remaining right hand and watch events unfold around him. "Healer!!!" he yelled; he cried.

Horus nodded as the King elaborated on his thoughts and emotions. He felt inspired by Tenszar's rumination on the rise of the Tari; it seemed somehow fitting as they strode through the open air of the streets. Horus watched as men and women of all ages moved through the streets, going about their daily lives.

"It truly is amazing, sire," Horus admired softly, "The progress, that is."

The pair reached the base of the Senate and began ascending up the staircase of the building, the crowd from the street seemed to grow thicker as they did. The open air buzzed with excitement as the citizens of Tarin milled around the public forum. There is nothing quite like it. Horus thought to himself as he trailed the King up the stairs. The commotion of the area was surprisingly natural.

And yet, something was wrong. Glancing around the mass, Horus could see anxiety on the face of several bystanders. He scanned the stairs, searching for the cause of the suspicion. "Sire, I-"

It was too late. A strange masked man pounced on the King and sent them both barreling to the street below. As they fell down the steps, Horus saw the glint of a blade in the hand of the assailant.

Horus ran down the steps after Tenszar, a pack of senators, guards, and common citizens surrounding him. "Stop him!" Horus exclaimed over the screams of the crowd. His view of the King and attacker was obstructed by the wall of men flocking to the King's aid. By the time he pushed through the group to Tenszar, the assassin had sprinted away, dozens of guards chasing after him.

Horus dropped down to his knees at the fallen King's side. Blood dripped from his badly slashed left hand to the dirty ground below. The King screamed for a healer, his cry echoed across the plaza.

"Remain calm, sire," Horus glanced around, desperately searching for help, "Just stay still."

A young boy watched the fight with wide eyes. His mother tried to turn him away so he wouldn’t see, but he didn’t let her. When the king yelled “Healer!!!”, the boy wrestled away from his mom and ran to the market.

The crowd that had gathered around Myr was dispersing and going back to their shopping. Her examining a badly sunburned young hunter wasn’t as interesting her acting like a fool. Out of nowhere, a boy grabbed her arm. “Myr! Myr! The prince... the king... somebody cut the king...” the child was out of breath.

She grabbed him by the shoulders. “Where?”

“The senai... the seni... where the toga people are.”

Myr got the idea. She grabbed her bag and ran as fast as she could. It wasn’t very far, and she knew some shortcuts.

“Healer coming through! Make room!” she yelled at the back of the crowd she saw. People got out of the way, first slowly, then faster when a guard joined Myr and started pushing them aside. Without asking, she started working. She bound his arm to stop the worst of the bleeding. “On your side, this arm up” she ordered. “Stay awake.” She began cleaning and treating the wounds, the liquid she used felt worse to Tenszar than the knife had.

The cut in Tenszar’s wrist could be bandaged, the one in his hand was a bigger problem. “Does anyone have a thin needle? And fire. Give me fire.” Myr only owned a bone needle, it wasn’t very suitable for stitching a hand. A woman handed her a bronze needle, a moment later someone brought a torch. Myr held the needle in the flame until the metal burned her finger, threaded it with a long hair, and stitched the cut. “If you have something important to say, do it now. I’m going to give you something against the pain, it will confuse you a bit while it works.” After wrapping a tight bandage around his hand and lower arm, she removed the first one around his upper arm. “Let’s hope it doesn’t start bleeding again.”
