Introduction
The song remains the same. Yet, virtually everything else, its players included, is different...
This is a "what-if" sort of tale, about one of the most influential of all rock bands, Led Zeppelin. It will depict the band's early days, and rise to success. And perhaps even its final disbanding, if it continues long enough. There will also be an occult/mystery sub-plot in the background, to keep things intriguing. But that will not overshadow that this is a story about the lives and experiences of four (or perhaps five) gifted individuals, first and foremost.
Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones were never born. In their place are the characters whom the players will create. They may be similar, in some ways, or perhaps hardly at all. Persona detail will be left to the devising of each player, with one needful exception, mentioned below. While the band will have a rise to success similar to the real Zeppelin, events and particulars will differ, and be unique to this little piece of fiction.
This tale begins in 1969, in London England. It will be necessary for players to keep the time and place presented in a reasonably accurate way, in their writings. There is definitely room for fictional embellishment, though; other bands, television shows, and magazines that never existed in our own world, for instance. As the title might imply, the real Zeppelin's catalog of songs will be used as this version's repertoire.
Guidelines and such-
You needn't be an absolute junkie of the band's music to have a place in this story. Preferably, you will be at least somewhat familiar, and willing to listen and learn more, as needed. Any experience playing music is a plus, though definitely no requirement. This is a role play, after all.
As mentioned above, there will be some occult trappings. Anyone familiar with the interests of guitarist Jimmy Page, will know this isn't exactly a fictional add-on. It will run a little deeper than in real life, however, shading the band members' lives with a touch of the other worldly. And posing certain complications and situations, as the story evolves. To facilitate this, at least one member of the group must have an avid interest in the occult. Perhaps the guitarist, but that isn't mandatory. In any case, the backstory needs to include well considered detail why this is. "He developed a strong interest in the occult" will not cut it.
There won't be any spell casting in a medieval fantasy like sense, ever. Spells and incantations might well be read, but their results, if any, will be vague or challenging to prove. And any benefits likely to be laced with a corresponding amount of issues.
Please note that I am looking for co-authors, and that this is not a strictly GM led affair. I do have plots, themes, and numbers of npcs to introduce. I will do my part to keep the story moving and unfolding. But, I expect help from everyone else. Including npcs, whom everyone else can get to know and interact with. If you are strictly a reactive player, and require someone else to present an entire world for you, then you will not be a good fit here.
Interesting romantic subplots would be a welcome element. These may occur between band members, but don't need to. Remember, there are npcs. Your own, and those written by others. If you want a love life for your character, something will be arranged. If you prefer to detail it all yourself, in the background, without the involvement of another player, this works as well.
Which bring us lastly to adult activities: I'd prefer the degree of sensuality of an R rated movie. Or fade to black, when that is preferred. I could be willing to flex this, if there is a majority desire for more. But, I do not want to read post after graphic post of characters getting it on with groupies, etc. Gratuitous sex isn't going to be part of this. Not on screen, at least.
Submissions-
You've come this far, and are actually interested in this quirky, odd ball idea? Then, please feel free to submit a character concept. Only a concept: what the character is like as a person, what has shaped them, their strengths and flaws, what drives them forward. You do not need to write a multi-paragraph history, in order to apply. And that is because this will not be first come, first served. I'm going to hold out for those who feel like the best fit. If you do not play other characters on this site, it would help if you would include a writing sample, of any post you think a good reflection of your overall style and approach. Text style grammar, as well as one or two sentence posts, are straight out. Characters can be male or female, as you choose. But with the limitation that this won't be an all female band. Though common enough today, that would be a bit too gimmicky for the time period.
The John Paul Jones slot (bass/keyboards) will be written by myself. This leaves open the charismatic front person/singer, the guitar wizard, and the percussion god. Flexibility as to your role is helpful, but please do state your preference. I will attempt to give everyone involved the role they want. Please do stick more or less to your role: the lead singer should have not more than minimal instrumental skills. The drummer should not be a multi-instrumentalist, nor the guitarist a golden-throat who only grudgingly cedes the mic to the frontman/woman. Like the real band, this will be a meeting of cooperating specialists, each with their own niche.
Someone in the role of band manager is quite possible, even desirable. Zeppelin's real life manager was quite the character himself. Often regarded as the fifth member of Led Zeppelin. Anyone who takes this role should understand that the manager won't be perpetually hanging out at every rehearsal, etc. That doesn't mean (s)he will be left with nothing to do, however. I expect there will often be more than a single scene running at a time.
Now, I have my doubts whether this little oddball idea will actually attract enough interest to be viable. We shall seeβ¦
