----Kataro----

There are things in this world that are better left unknown…

It was like the start of a fairy tale that had turned nightmare. A little ways off from the boundaries of society rested a small forest. It wasn’t a particularly bad forest. The trees grew high, letting very little sunlight in, and wild animals roamed about freely. Crystal lakes were hidden within the confines of it, blocking it from most travelers’ eyes.

To most the forest would seem eerie and would be a place that people would stay away from. However to those living there, it was home. The trees gave them security as a house would for a human. From teh inside it was quite a gorgeous forest, like one that could only be found in a story. One inhabitant was unlike most others. Kataro was seemingly human if it weren’t for the black mounds of fur that peeked out from his tan-ish hair. He had cat ears and even a tail that would swing side to side as he walked.

These features were far from fake, embedded into him and part of him. It was because of that, that it made him someone to be feared. People called him a creature, a weirdo …a monster. To the town he was an abomination. As far back as he could recall, he had woken up under a bridge in the town. He couldn’t remember anything, just that he hated the water.

As he began walking around trying to ask for help he found he couldn’t remember how to speak all that would come out was “Nya!” This started people’s fear of him. Around him people would point and scream. His face appeared on pictures around the town, depicted in the most horrible of ways. Eventually he was cornered, when he was trying to get some fish. People threw sticks, rocks, old food, and trash at him. He could only stare in hurt and shock as the kind people treated him that way. He ended up running into the forest that day, where he had remained. To this day he didn’t understand why it was done, but when he did go near the town, he found it best to keep his ears and tail covered.

Kataro spent the time, wandering through the forest, and learning about everything in it. On the occasion that a traveler had come by he would catch their speech, but most people avoided the forest entirely, making him highly uneducated on how to talk. It was on a particularly normal day for him, after having taken a nap in a high tree and searching for something to eat that he came across something that was different to him.

A cabin in the woods.

Kataro tilted his head and stared with big blue eyes at the contraption. It was curious, curious for it to be there. He didn’t wonder if he was perhaps lost, he didn’t try to make any sense of it. He simply walked over to it, as any curious creature would. Once reaching it, he ran his hands over the glass of a window. It was unlike anything he had felt before. As he did this he noticed it slightly a jar, he hooked his hands through the opening and pulled it up.

The window opened and he gasped loudly. He tested the area, noticing the glass was gone and his hands disappeared into the opening. Finding this curious as well he leapt upon the sill and threw his entire body through it. He rolled and landed upright on all fours inside the cabin. His ears perked up as he looked around, his eyes wide with interest.

~Amelia~

Amelia looked in the mirror. She braided her hair into one braid. She secured the end of the braid with a small black ribbon. She then brushed her bangs. She put the brush down once her bangs were straight. Today she wore a long sleeved shirt. The shirt was decorated with white and black stripes. Lastly she had on dark blue jean shorts with black flats.

She looked around her room. Her room was the largest room in the cabin. She had a queen size bed with a sheer white canopy that covered it. Her bed and pillow sheets were also white. She had five pillows neatly placed on her bed. One white drawer was on each side of the bed against the wall. Against the front of the bed was a large wooden chest. The wall across the bed had a white dresser with a mirror and shelves against it. The shelves were packed with books. Besides that nothing else was in her room. Amelia kept her room pretty simple.

A few minutes later she left her room. She went down the hall towards a large area of the cabin. That was where the kitchen and living room were. The kitchen was just off in a corner by itself. The living room took up the rest of the area.

Amelia mouth watered as she smelled sugar cookies. The scent of the cookies diffused throughout the cabin. She liked her lips as she headed towards the kitchen. Amelia did not want the sweets to burn. Once she entered the kitchen she turned the oven light on. The cookies had started to turn a golden brown. They are almost done. She turned the light off. Amelia leaned against the stove. She wrapped her arms around her waist. Seconds later she closed her eyes.

There was a round table near the lower left corner of the kitchen. The stove was against a wall next to the sink. Above the stove and sink was a shelf. Under the shelf were hooks to hold pans and pots. Above the shelf were four cabins with a window in the middle.

The living room had a large round hazel rug in the center with a red beanbag on top. About six feet in front of the rug was a brick chimney. The chimney was full of life. Orange flames licked the large pieces of firewood. Puffs of gray smoke slowly climbed out the chimney. The crackling of wood filled the silents of the cabin. The fireplace was filled with life; A warmth emitted from it. The gentle heat made the cabin feel nice and cozy. A safe place to be. A welcoming place.

Against each wall in the living room were two bookshelves. The bookshelves were filled with books. There were even books on top of and piled next to each bookshelf. Reading was her escaped.

Amelia body relaxed as she waited for the timer to go off. Then she heard a loud gasp. Her eyes flew open in surprise. She slowly leaned forward to look around the area. Is someone in here? Her body tensed as she saw someone throw themselves inside of her home. A frown tugged at her lips. She watched the boy. She was frozen in place for a while. Amelia was unsure of what to do.

Confusion suddenly filled her eyes. He had cat ears and tail. His cat ears moved. Those must be fake. He must be into cosplay. Why is he here? No one ever comes here besides the mail carrier. I cannot believe this. She moved off the wall.

Amelia walked silently towards the male. She stopped when she was about five away. Amelia cleared her throat loudly. She looked down at the male. Amelia carefully looked him over. Does he live in this forest too? Did the towns people kick him out like they did to me? She pushed her thoughts away. He was an intruder in her home. She had to remember that.

"Hello. Why are you in my cabin? Do you plan on stealing something? I may live alone and may be a girl but do not think I will not fight you. If you try to take something from my cabin or harm me I will fight you. I advise you leave now," she stated. Her tone harsh with seriousness.

----Kataro----

With interest the young neko looked around at the room. He had never before seen anything like it. He knelt upon the floor wondering if he should investigate further. It was a large room, without any plants as he was used to seeing. In fact, Kataro hadn’t even been near a house before, as far as he knew. Below him was a scratchy material that made him lift up his hands and examine them.

There were more things around him like some red coloured mass that he dared not venture near for fear it would attack him. Even huger cases in the wall, also attracted the attention of the neko. He didn’t know what a book was, but he thought he remembered seeing something like it before. The room was also a lot warmer than he was used to. It was actually very comforting to him and sort of welcoming. His ears perked up, and his tail swayed lightly. He would have gone closer to it if it weren’t for the sound that suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

He jumped and turned towards the noise, going on alert. A black haired girl stood a little ways away from him. From the way she was staring at him it made him feel uncomfortable and unwelcome so much for the fire. Then when she started walking towards him he panicked and shrunk backwards like a scared animal. His black furry ears pinned to the sides of his head and his tail curled around him.

"Hello. Why are you in my cabin? Do you plan on stealing something? I may live alone and may be a girl but do not think I will not fight you. If you try to take something from my cabin or harm me I will fight you. I advise you leave now,"

She was speaking, he knew that much. However, he who had not spent much time in the presence of humans did not fully understand the language. Her tone however showed she wasn’t happy with him, and he cringed more, like an animal who had been caught doing something wrong. In some way that’s exactly what he was.

“Nyan” He squeaked as he drew back even further. His eyes darted around the room for an escape as he continued to back up. To add to his unluckiness, he backed up too far and caught the tip of his tail on fire.

“NYOWWWW!”

He screeched in pain and darted from the fire, rushing past the girl nearly knocking her over. He then grabbed his tail, mewing in despair, almost forgetting the girl's presence.

Amelia couldn't help the frown on her lips. How can his ears and tail move so well? She watched him as he jumped. I guess he is scared. That is a good thing...but why would he be scared if he sneaked into my house? A frustrated sigh escaped her lips. She continued to watch him, especially his ears and tail. They were kind of freaking her out.

She felt impatience as she waited for answers. Amelia watched as he cringed. I don't think I talked that harshly to him. Did he just say Nyan? What is up with him? Amelia watched him. His eyes darted around the room as he continued to back up. This confused Amelia even more. I am not that scary now. I think he is overreacting now. Amelia jumped when he screeched. Her eyes widen.

She stumbled when he rushed pasted her. She was glad she had been able to regain her balance quickly. Amelia would have felt embarrassed if she had fallen; She would have looked silly. Amelia turned and watched him carefully. She slowly walked towards him once again. Why is he holding his tail like that? How could he feel pain from his tail? The tail couldn't have gotten hurt; It is fake. Maybe he just likes that tail a lot...

Ring!Ring!Ring! The timer had gone off. She rushed over to the kitchen. Amelia forgot about the stranger in her cabin.

She took black oven mitts off one of the hooks and pulled them on. She opened the oven. Then she pulled the tray of cookies out. Her cheeks flushed as the intense heat from the oven hit her. Amelia placed the tray on the table. Then she returned the oven mitts and closed the oven. She turned the oven off. She walked over to the cookies and looked them over. They were large and round. They looked so delicious and soft. They were a golden brown. Mmm. I cannot wait to have one. Too bad I need to wait for them to cool off... Oh, wait, that stranger is still in my cabin.

She rushed back over to where the male was. Amelia slowly kneeled down to be at eye level with him. A sigh escaped her lips. Let me be nice. There is something obviously not right with him. She looked into his eyes.

"Are you lost? Would you like some cookies and milk in a little while? The cookies just need to cool down. I am sorry if I was too mean to you earlier. Are you okay now?" she questioned. Her tone much sweeter than before. Amelia felt bad about scaring him. She looked into his eyes with concern. I wonder if he has any family or someone who takes care of him. Hopefully he isn't dangerous. I hope I am not being stupid by being nice to him. Amelia bit her bottom lip as she started to worry. She waited for him to respond.

----Kataro----

Pain, unbelievable unbearable pain coursed through his body as he clutched to his tail. The fire had been patted out, and had only touched it for a fraction of a second, but it was enough to cause the young Neko boy to scream. His fingers fumbled with the end of his tail as he bit into his lip to keep himself from crying. It was probably the human-like part of him that knew boys shouldn’t cry.

Ring! Ring! Ring! A noise erupted, causing Kataro’s ears to pop up again and he looked around eyes wide and alert. The girl who had spoken harshly ran from the room, and Kataro titled his head curious. It had distracted himself from the pain, numbing it even. It was the first time he had entered a place like that and now he was paying for it. He looked at the window he had come in from wondering if he should leave through it like he came in. However, as he made a movement towards it, the female entered the room again, causing him to cringe again and grab at his tail.

She ran at him, and he brought up his hands to cover his face. Then after a moment when nothing bad happened, he dropped his hands to see her sitting eye level with him. His eyes opened up wide, but he stayed put. Kataro lightly titled his head to the side as the girl sighed

"Are you lost? Would you like some cookies and milk in a little while? The cookies just need to cool down. I am sorry if I was too mean to you earlier. Are you okay now?" she spoke fast, and words he didn’t fully understand. Having not been around humans often enough, he didn’t know much of the language. He only caught some of it when travellers would pass through the forest. However, he did notice that she used a different tone. It was soft, and in the instant, all else was forgiven. Their eyes met, his pretty blue orbs connecting with hers for a moment. Suddenly he felt safe. He felt like he had seen eyes like hers previously, but that would be odd considering he had never been so close to a human.

The idea of it made his head sting. But, wait wasn’t his tail the one hurt. He broke the contact and glanced down at his tail as he tried to communicate with the girl. He opened his mouth a few times revealing a mouth full of cat-like teeth, rather than human. He closed his mouth then opened it again, seemingly struggling to speak. Finally he came up with a few words.

“Kat-ar-o….oww” He said lifting his tail to show her the burned off fur around the tip of the cat-like appendage. Although his words were choppy he was trying to say “I’m hurt” but replaced the “I” with his own name, speaking in a sort of third person.

Amelia watched him as she knelt there. She waited for him to talk. She hoped she would get a reply this time. She folded her hands in front of her. Her hopes rose when he started to open his mouth. Her eyes widen. His teeth looked weird. Her mouth opened and closed. She was left speechless. His teeth? Why do they look like that? They must be fake. Is he struggling to speak...can he speak?

She pushed her thoughts away when he spoke. Amelia looked at him confused. The only thing she understood was the word ow. She looked at his tail. It looks real...but how can that be? He must be in pain then if it is real... Let me go get him some burn ointment.

"Wait here," she said. She got up and ran down the hallway. At the end of the hallway was the bathroom. Amelia entered and looked through the medicine cabin. She got the ointment and returned to where the male was. Amelia knelt down again. She opened the ointment. Amelia placed a pea drop amount on the burnt off area of his tail. She then gently rubbed the ointment all over brunt area. She made sure not to miss a spot. She closed the ointment.

"There you go. Your tail should feel better now. I will be back in a little while. I am going to go wash my hands and then go to the kitchen," she told him. Amelia stood and returned to the bathroom. She put the ointment away. Next Amelia washed her hands. She dried her hands on a black towel which hung on the back of the bathroom door. The bathroom door had steel hooks near the top. Including, her bathroom had a black sink with a matching cabinet underneath it. Above the sink was a mirror which was a medicine cabinet. She also had a stand up shower. Her toilet was black. Above the toilet was a small window. The window had small black curtains to cover it.

She walked out of the bathroom, closed the door, and went to the kitchen. She got a plate from a cabin and two tall glasses. She placed the items on the table. Amelia opened the black fridge. The fridge was against wall opposite of the sink. She got out a gallon of milk. Then she went to the table and filled the glasses. She put the milk back and closed the fridge. Amelia returned to the table. Amelia took each warm cookie and placed it on the plate in a pile. Once the tray was empty she placed it in the sink. Amelia walked back into the living room. Her eyes landed on the male.

"Come on, I have a snack for you. Come on," she said. She waved him over before she entered the kitchen again. Amelia took a seat at the table. There was an empty chair across from her. Amelia took a warm cookie and bit into it. Seconds later she took a sip from her cold glass. She waited for the male to enter the kitchen. Hopefully he understood what I said...

He sat on the floor, holding onto his tail and whimpering. The girl’s expressions were odd to him, although he no longer feared her, he still thought her strange. She probably thought the same of him. "Wait here," she said. Kataro watched as she stood up and ran down to the end of the hallway. He titled his head in confusion and was very curious. The girl returned quickly enough was with a small thing in her hands.

Kataro blinked as she opened the container and dropped some on his tail. He flinched at the suddenness of it, but calmed down after a moment. She wasn’t trying to hurt him. He knew this. He stayed still as she gently rubbed the ointment onto his tail at where it had burnt. He watched curiously, making sure to keep still. Oddly, the pain was going away. It didn’t quite make sense to him.

"There you go. Your tail should feel better now. I will be back in a little while. I am going to go wash my hands and then go to the kitchen," The girl said as she closed the container. Kataro caught snippets of words he could understand mixed with ones he didn’t. He nodded and tilted his head. He knew that “go” meant she was going to leave. After she did he tested his tail, to see if it was moveable. It was okay, but he wouldn’t risk any huge movement.

He looked over at the fireplace and shot it a glare, as if it was at fault for him backing up into it. He then waited patiently observing the room around him. Those books that he wanted to pick up were still there. He stood slowly and walked towards them again, which was when the girl appeared back in the room.

He jumped and turned around, to face her. "Come on, I have a snack for you. Come on," . Her voice was kind again as she made waving motions towards him. Snack? he thought, the word was familiar to him. He walked away from the books and followed where she beckoned him.

He looked around as he entered it, noticing quickly a difference in the way the floor felt. Kataro wasn’t wearing any shoes. He glanced up again and saw her sitting at a table. Two plates and cups were set out. Yes, Kataro remembered the word vaguely now. A snack was a sort of food. He walked into the room slowly and padded across the floor to the seat opposite her. He climbed upon it much as a cat would, rather than a boy.

He observed her for a second as she nibbled at a cookie. It smelled wonderful, and Kataro looked down at the plate that was placed in front of him. “For Kat-ar-o nya?” he asked pointing at the cookies. Again he substituted a word with his own name this time trying to say. “For me?”

Amelia watched him carefully as he looked around. She smiled at him when he looked up at her. One of her brows rose as he got on the chair. He is an odd creature. I can’t believe his ears and tail look so real. I don’t understand how they can be real... Maybe I am dreaming? Amelia put her cookie down on the plate. She winced as she pinched her arm. Afterwards Amelia rubbed the spot gently. A frown tugged at her lips. I guess this isn’t a dream...I wonder if there are any other odd creatures in this forest...I hope not. Well, I hope they are nice if there are any more odd creatures in this forest.

A sigh escaped her lips as she picked up the cookie once again. She took a big bite out of it. The flavour seemed to burst inside of her mouth. Her eyes wandered over to him as he spoke. Confusion filled her eyes. What did he say? Did he ask if it was for him? She took in a deep breath. Amelia felt a bit frustrated that she could not understand him well. She pushed the plate towards him.

Yes, for you. Take one,” she said. Amelia picked up another cookie and held it out to him. She continued to watch him. "They are sugar cookies. They are really yummy, well, I think they are yummy anyways," she stated. She moved the cookie closer to his lips.

“Yes, for you. Take one,” She picked one up and handed it to him. Kataro blinked a few times unsure of what to do. He didn’t move to take it just continued to stare at it. "They are sugar cookies. They are really yummy, well, I think they are yummy anyways," she pushed the cookie forwards more that now it touched his mouth. He flinched in surprise, but quickly reached up a hand to take the treat.

He nibbled a bit of it, before his eyes lit up, sparkling with delight and he devoured the rest of it in a second.

Amelia eyes widen when he flinched. Maybe I shouldn't have done that. She watched as he nibbled the sweet cookie. A smile graced her lips as she watched him eat the cookie quickly. She was glad he liked it. It always made Amelia happy when she saw others enjoying her food. Amelia then proceeded to finish her cookies and milk. Once she finish she put her dishes in the sink. She wiped her mouth with a napkin before throwing it away. The napkins were in the middle of the table in a metal holder. There was a small black trash tin behind the table. Next she quickly washed and dried the dishes before she put them away. She simply dried her hands on her shorts.

Ding Dong. Amelia looked up and walked off into the living room. She opened the door. It the was the young mail carrier, Josh. He had four boxes. He walked in and placed them on the rug. Then he handed her the clipboard. He looked around the area before his eyes landed on the male who was at the kitchen table. She signed the papers quickly and handed it back to him.

"Thank you. Have a nice day Josh," she said. She wanted to get him out of her cabin as soon as possible. Amelia did not want to be bothered with any questions he may have about the stranger in her cabin. She held the door wide open as she waited for him to walk out. He just gave her a questioning look before he left. She closed the door and locked it. A sigh escaped Amelia's lips.

"Hopefully he does not talk about the stranger he saw in my cabin today. My parents will probably have a fit, especially because this stranger is a male. Who knows what they will think," she said, saying her thoughts out loud. She glanced at the boxes before she entered the kitchen. She got a knife. She returned to the living room. Next she moved the boxes next to her bean bag. She put one box in her lap as she sat down on the bean bag. She opened the box and put what was inside on the rug. Inside were dough shaped bird feeders. There was a rose red, cloud white, navy blue, and lime green one. Each had a sliver chain attached to it.

She placed the empty box on her other side. In the next box were about five bags of bird feed. Amelia placed it next to the bird feeders. In the third box was a metal wind chime which was shaped as a sunshine yellow butterfly with onyx edges. She left the wind chime in the box. Amelia slowly stood and put the knife in the sink. She leaned against the sink before she looked at the stranger.

"What's your name?" she asked, but then thought that he wouldn't probably understand her question. She placed her hand on her chest. "Amelia," she said before gesturing her hand out to him. She hoped he understood what she was saying to some extent. Amelia again put her hand on her chest. "Amelia," she said once again before she gestured her hand out to him once again.

Kataro had liked the cookie a lot. It was much better than any berry he had ever tasted, although fish still came out on top. He happily ate the rest of the cookies on his plate until they were gone, and looked up to see the girl finishing up her own. He didn't touch the milk though, also unsure of what it was. He blinked as she picked up the dishes to wash them, his ears twtiching slightly as he observed her every move with curiosity.

He stayed where he was with his head titled to the side and his legs swinging gently off of the edge of the chair. His tail tapped against the side of the wood as he watched her dry the dishes and put them away. When the door bell rang, Kataro jumped a bit freezing in place. His eyes darted around wildly as the girl got up to answer the door. Kataro slipped off the chair and held onto the edge of the table as he ducked behind it warrily hearing the male voice and watching as the boxes were brought inside. All at once, his curiosity took over him again.

Once the door was shut and the girl had returned inside. Kataro pried himself away from the table to get a better look at the boxes, and what was inside them. He thought he remembered seeing something like it before but couldn't recall. However he watched with wonder as she cut them open and started removing the contents. Kataro watched her from the doorway of the kitchen and scammpered away as she placed the knife in the sink and turned to him.

Amelia....

That's what she was saying. Kataro understood automatically that it was her name. He walked closer to her and her outstretched hand slowly. Then looked up to speak. "Kat....Kat..ar...o" He said softly, purring at the end. He was close to her now, but his eyes weren't as warry as before, perhaps he was starting to trust her.
