THE WELCOMING OF KRISTIN M. ROBERTSSON

"Kristin, Miss Robertsson, right now, you cannot speak. Like the others, it is for your own good until I am finished with my words. You know me as The Operator or Op. Doesn't matter to myself. Now I am sure you understand the circumstances. If not, then please allow me to help you understand. I am part of a group... moreover a series of people that test the minds of those we have chosen. You are not chosen because you are someone special, you are chosen because you are a fighter. There are ten of you. Three of you are awake. The other seven will not be awoken until their dream is finished with me. Being stripped of everything except the clothing on your back, you are subject to choose your weaponry, food and misc. items before the challenges."

"You are 15 years old. I admire you personally for your way of life. An orphan who has been through Hell with others and came back alive. I also admire you love your freedom. Most of the others... they take that for granted. You are young and to be honest, you should live a little longer than the third challenge. It would be one Hell of a challenge."

"Remember, conserve energy let the world around you... be the world around you. Though I said you should live longer, does not mean you will. Do not expect a helping hand from us up here. Because you can die. Good luck to you."

Kristin awoke with a start. What the hell... Did I hit my head or what? Such a weird dream...
She looked around her, staring in disbelief. Her surroundings no longer looked like the orphanage. She rubbed her eyes in disbelief and sat up. She saw a few other people around her, some awake, some sleeping. She stood up. "Whoa... Who are you guys?" she started, swaying slightly.

Caitlyn looked at the girl who had spoken and tryed to analyze her. The only thing she could conclude was that the girl had gone through a hard life style and seemed to have a lot of courage. "Caitlyn,Caitlyn Conary is my name. Yours?" While waiting for the other girl her answer she looked at the girl who hadn't said anything yet and tryed to analyze her too. Quite petite but she's dangerous. Caitlyn could tell that from the girl her muscles. She seems like the silent type. That was the only thing she conclude since hadn't heard the girl speak yet and she also hadn't moved yet from her spot.

The Cook: [Female Voice]

"Hello Ladies. I know this voice is a little unfamiliar to you all. I am The Cook, call me what you decide. I will be your cook. You may eat whatever you like as long as you keep it reasonable. If you try to make it complicated, you can guarantee that you won't eat. Now, What would you three like to eat?"

Eden watched the one called Conary glance her way. She returned her calculating stare with a cold one. She seemed to have been talking to another girl. Then a woman's voice boomed over a hidden speaker and introduced herself as the Cook. The Cook asked what they wanted to eat. Not sure if the woman could hear her, Eden whispered quietly under her breath, because she was largely incapable of raising her voice any louder. "Bread."

Kristin shook her head. "Sorry, I was a bit unfocused back there. Well, I'm Kristin Robertsson. Nice to meet you, Caitlyn. Although I wish it were under different circumstances."
She turned to the cook. "I don't suppose you have any coffee? Thanks."

The Cook:

"Coffee? Yes, I do." The door on the ceiling opened again, letting dow a box, the same size (approx.) as Eden's breads. "All types of coffees are there, in canteens that kept them nice and hot. Just as the breads had been, they were encased with a key on the top to unlock them.

"Do enjoy your coffees Kristin."

That seems to be a bit of overkill, Eden thought. She looked through the content of the box and ended up with a small piece of bagguette. She nibbled it as she stood, stretching her legs and surveying the room more. The girl with Conary seemed to have requested something as well, judging by the slightly smaller crate she was fishing something out of. Coffee, by the smell. When the bread was eaten, Eden finished warming up and removed most of the contents of her crate, piling the bread delicately on the floor. She turned the crate on its side and it was just big enough to be a defensible position for her. Eden didn't know how that was going to help her, but it felt good to do something. She curled up in the box and watched the other chosen with half-closed eyes.

The Operator:

"Change in schedules everyone. Things will be starting off tomorrow." He spoke calmly and he spoke to where it could be known that he was smiling. "February 14th. Eden? You have actually passed a bonus challenge. Anyone to have ordered their food has gotten a crate of the exaggerating sizes due to tomorrows challenges. There are hidden bonuses each time you are given something. I would have told you earlier, but what fun would it be if you knew you had to look for something?" He laughed playfully.

"Eden, for being the first to figure it out, tomorrow you will be able to choose two misc. items, rather than 1. Are there any questions?"

The Cook:

"Lollipops it is." The ceiling door opened and the crate was extracted from the sizable hole. "Enjoy." Suddenly, she spoke and asked, "Tell me, Caitlyn, how ever do you eat so many lollipops? They are quite unhealthy for you if you eat a lot of them. Isn't being unhealthy... completely, a thing you are afraid of?"

The voice then became a female hologram the same height as Caitlyn herself. She smirked and stood before her wearing a chef's outfit with a blank name tag. "Here is... motivation. You know, to get you started?" Her hand touched Caitlyn's face, but there was nothing to feel for she wasn't there for real.

"We live in 2012. Do you see our technology?" She looked at the other two girls and then to Caitlyn once more. "Technology that already exists. I can change the room and its temperature with the push of a button, yet you are not cured? Tell me. Would you like to make that 100% healthy mark if you win this?"

She turned to Kristin without letting Caitlyn answer. "You. You are a fighter. Not that of the fists and kicks, but of the mind. Tell me if I am wrong. Tell me if I get this wrong when I say... you sometimes wish people would leave you alone, that you would never again be bullied. How would you feel if you were never to see another foster home so as long as you lived? If you would be provided house and home with no worries of bills and mortgages and the same for the children you may or may not want to conceive or adopt?"

"Eden. The quiet child of them all. You want freedom for life. Sure, you have it now, but no one's freedom is forever. You know that. Don't you. Yours can be, though. You can smile and you can mope, you can run, but you can't hide. You can breathe in, but tell me... are you always going to breathe out?" The Cook walked under the opened ceiling and started to fade. "Be focused... all of you. Tomorrow... we begin." She left out of sight and the lights grew dim.

Kristin sat, frozen. How did she know...
She finally spoke. "How... How..." She was unable to get all the words out. Her entire body was shaking with... Fear? Anger? "How... How could she? How could you? You present the hope to me that I will have the life I always dreamed of? Sooner or later, you will return me back to where I was... Planting false images in my head, is this a ploy to bring me down?!"

The Cook:

"No, I do not lie to those who will lose their life if they do not play right. No ploys, no misunderstandings... You wish to live a life of no abuse and dishonor to your person, if you win or at least even survive every challenge... it will happen. To answer you on... 'how' don't forget you have been watched for quite some time now."

Kristin looked down at her hand, realizing that she was still holding the canteen of coffee. She downed it in one gulp and reached for another. "All right then. What are we supposed to do now?"

"Well, if you would like to see, The Break Room is open and you all are good to be entered. Would you like to go in? There is television if you wish to watch the news... it might just come in handy tomorrow."

Kristin looked around at the others, wondering if they wanted to go. "Yeah, I'll go. Been a long time since I had my choice of what to do." She got up, still holding on to a few canteens of coffee.

"Thanks." Kristin sat down. She spotted a remote on the table and picked it up, turning on the television and switching to the news channel.
"Another teenage girl has been reported missing. Kristin Maria Robertsson's bed was found empty on the morning of the eighth of February. She disappeared from Rosewood Orphanage. Miss Robertsson has been a resident of Rosewood Orphanage for three years." The camera panned to show Mrs. Canning, the lady who ran Rosewood Orphanage. She was sniffing and holding a handkerchief. "Kristin has always been a quiet and studious girl. Many of our children here have been friends with her. We hope that she comes back soon. If you see Kristin, please call 84356245. Thank you."
Kristin rolled her eyes. Mrs. Canning had never cared for me. All that pretense was probably to earn sympathy points. She sat back and frowned at the television, listening to the rest of the report.

Kristin rolled her eyes. "Since when has Mrs. Canning ever cared for me? Huh... Quiet and studious, indeed. Friends with me? The only person that got this close to being my friend was that kid who tried to introduce himself. He never finished. The others beat him up before he could say his name. What does Mrs. Canning care about? Sympathy points. I bet she's glad that I'm gone. One less brat to take care of."

Kristin's face hardened. "You think I didn't do that? You think I watched while he got beaten up? How can anyone resist beating me up at the same time? Of course I got another black eye out of that incident. Trust me, I will not sit back and watch others face the same fate anymore. Not if I get out of here alive."
