It's not that she is a bully, in the typical sense of the word. Rather, Sage doesn't waste time on people she doesn't care for, nor on those who so blatantly display weakness. Even friends may see that side of her at times, especially if seeking advice. If you ask her opinion over a bad boyfriend, she will tell you to dump him, and no doubt share her disappointment with you if her advice isn't followed. Why waste your time on someone who doesn't make you truly happy? Her forgiveness is not easily won, nor her trust to start with. Though Sage has a number of friends, few of those actually know beneath the surface of the mermaid. She does not trust easily, instead keeping her secrets close and her insecurities closer still.
It can be tough then, to really get to know her. Which is perhaps the point. On the surface, you may think she is your typical, vain mermaid. Consumed with maintaining her image - and she does like to look good in public, does check her reflection when passing a mirror - but beneath that is the fear she isn't good enough or pretty enough. Where some lean on their friends for support, Sage prefers to bear it alone. She's independent like that, never scared of striking out alone even if she is also equally able to work in a group (provided her teammates can keep up). Two centuries of life has allowed the mermaid to understand well her strengths and weaknesses, and know how to play her strengths to avoid those weaknesses.
Although she can come across as cold and vain, that's not all there is to the mermaid. She can be witty, friendly, and a protective shield to her friends. All you have to do is give her a chance and perhaps she'll give you the time of day too.

- Although Sage enjoys parties, she can't stand over-loud music, due to her sensitive hearing. She also dislikes open flame for obvious reasons. Dehydrated foods have always confused her, and she's never been a fan of coffee. She always finds herself sneering at those without backbone, but also people, particularly arrogant men, who act as if they own the world. Funnily enough, she finds arrogance/confidence attractive in women.

- Insecure, she may give a strong front, but Sage hides a number of insecurities. Untrusting, her secrets remain held close to her chest. It takes a lot to make her truly trust a person. Impatience is, perhaps, an unlikely trait for an immortal, but Sage frequently finds herself getting irritated if she feels she's being held back by someone, or even not progressing quickly enough herself. Running, that's a pass from Sage, thanks. She'd much rather stick to swimming.
F E A R S
Sage fears being alone, abandoned by family, friends, and lovers to carry out her immortality alone. Further to this, she also fears forgetting moments, months, or years of her life - forgetting faces of those she loves and has loved, and those who have made her years whole.

Sage was a babe of twenty when she swam to the surface during a storm. A human ship floundered, abused by the waves until it shattered. Humans fell into the waters, struggling to reach the surface. Sage saved one, a young woman whose heavy skirts had quickly dragged her down. Aida. Sage swam her back to the surface and ensured she lived to stand on land again. Love would blossom between the pair, only to be torn apart too soon by the very humans Sage had returned Aida to.
Aida was torn from Sage with accusations of 'monster', 'satan's creature', and 'witch craft' thrown at Sage by the humans holding Aida back. Sage still sneers today at their ignorance. She was no more a witch than they were, yet she hadn't fought back against their barbs when Aida's back had turned. They betrayal would haunt her for years, and taint any future relationships she had with humans following. Sage didn't immediately turn against humans after Aida, rather it was due to every new, small insult, or horror she saw them commit. The ocean, for all its rage and danger, was far safer in her mind.
Yet, curiosity would always pull her back to the land. She wanted to learn and so she spent years travelling the world before she finally stumbled across Thorn Hill. Older, wiser, and, at least outwardly more sure of herself, Sage temporarily gave up moving with the tides to attend Thorn Hill. She enjoyed the variation of supernatural creatures at the school, and the safety and community the town provided. It was therefore a shock to her when humans entered, and more so when they were admitted to the school. She will be watching closely, certain of their eventual failure.
