Introduction
The world of Neryas is one built upon the ideals of magic and technology.Β Two sapient races inhabit this world, each offering their own unique skill to this world.Β The elves, who supply the majesty of magical knowledge to the rest of the world, are a fair skinned, tall race who live by honor and tradition.Β The humans, who supply technological marvels and genius inventions that have made life both more comfortable and enjoyable for all, live by freedom and passion.Β At first, these two races were enemies for their differing philosophies.Β Wars waged for many years, with no sign of either side surrendering.Β One day, two leaders met in secret, fascinated with the other's culture.Β The elf wanted to know more about their technology and the human's passionate spirit while the human wanted to learn about the wonders of elven magic and their codes of honor, which have spared many a human soldier.Β Taking what they have learned from the other, a temporary cease fire was signed to share ideas with one another.Β Due to the positive reaction both sides had to the new cultures they have witnessed, this cease fire eventually developed into a full peace treaty, finally ending the war.
Centuries later, while there have been small scale skirmishes across the world, the majority of the world has remained peaceful.Β The mixture of magic and technology had proven to be a potent one indeed, as sprawling cities emerged across the world.Β These cities held the sophisticated beauty of traditional elven architecture and the sleek practicality of human technology.Β With many citizens wanting to delve into studying either magic or tech, the issue of a dwindling workforce began to arise.Β To combat the possible shortage of raw materials and food, it was decided that a new workforce needed to be established.Β Thus, the long process of biologically creating new life began.Β The new species that was created from this process took traits from both humans and elves, but also from various types of wildlife.Β The resulting combination gave them animalistic appearances, ranging from simply having the ears and tail of the primary species, to a more anthropomorphic appearance.Β They were affectionately dubbed naturan, meaning 'those of nature.'Β They were meek, compliant, and a competent workforce after being taught the basics of their jobs from those still working.Β The humans viewed them as exotic and intriguing, while most elves saw them as a labor force and nothing else.Β There were, of course, inversions of these thoughts, as some human workers viewed them as stealing their work and some of the middle-class elves saw them as fascinating.Β It took the naturan a long time for them to tire, and they seemed almost childishly carefree when not working.
This peaceful relation would not last forever, as the event that many feared came to pass.Β As the generations went on, the naturan began to get defiant.Β They were developing free wills and desired more out of their existence than work.Β After an attempt to subdue a rebelling group, an unexpected discovery was made.Β When under extraordinary stress and/or anger, the naturan seem to get extremely aggressive, sometimes even transforming into large creatures of terrifying strength.Β In the end, the small rebellion was ceased, and one of the first naturan to exhibit strange behavior was brought in for study.Β This naturan was given the code name 'Zero,' and it is through this naturan's will to rise up that would start a new political debate that may plunge Neryas into another period of strife.Β While some sympathized with their desire to belong, others viewed them as a threat to the natural order of things and needed to be controlled more.Β Only time will tell what happens to the world.
----------------------------
Setting
Neryas.Β This is a world that provides a mixture of magic and technology.Β The natural world is more vibrant and cared for in this world, but the technology level is still rather high.Β Modern conveniences such as cell phones exist so contact with others is entirely possible regardless of location.Β Locations of import include the elven spirit shrines located across the world, which act as primary places of worship for the elves.Β They worship the spirits of their ancestors and what they believe to be the spirits of the world itself.Β In the large city of Vistara, the Ifanriel Magic Tech College serves as one of the most prestigious academies in the world.Β Many strive to be a part of this academy so that they may learn from the very best in the fields.Β The humans have many factories across the world where they work on improving transportation methods and provide many luxury goods to the people.Β Magic is a common trait in elves, but has recently started to appear in some humans as well.Β Due to their busy, work-filled lifestyle, it is extremely rare for a naturan to exhibit magical potential.Β Laws involving magic are relatively lenient, but the use of offensive magic against someone who is of no threat is a grave offense.Β Civilians are allowed to carry weapons on them, but they are to be sheathed/holstered at all times unless threatened.Β Unfortunately, while it is looked down upon, there is no law strictly prohibiting disciplining a naturan worker physically, though many believe that needs to change.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 5 authors
Meanwhile, Connor spent his time in one of the small market districts. Most kept their distance from him, knowing what he has begun. Connor was aware of their wariness of him, but he didn't let that bother him. Before leaving to speak with the politician, Alex had left Connor with some money to buy food if he got hungry. Stepping to a stand, Connor saw piles of fresh apples which were his favorite. He turned his attention to the gruff-looking store owner and politely asked "Excuse me...can I buy a some of these from you?" to which the owner responds "I don't accept payment from your kind without your handler nearby. Get lost." he says harshly. Connor stepped back a little, frowning at the immediate rejection. Soon he's waved over by a friendly looking elderly woman. Cautiously, he steps forward. The woman hands him a small satchel of apples "Here you are dear..." she says. Not being one to accept charity, he gives her some of his money. "Thank you, ma'am." he smiles warmly as he takes the satchel. She smiles back and almost immediately gets into an argument with the other store owner. Connor wanted to step in, but a strong hand grabs his shoulder "Don't. See kid, this is what you've started and it's not a bad thing that people argue about you. It shows there are just as many people who support you as those who don't. Let them argue. Nothing we say will get to the jackass anyway." the man says. Connor turns around to see that it was Alex. He hands him one of the apples he bought "Here." he says before getting one out for himself as well.
Connor sits down on one of the benches in the area, taking a bite out of the apple. He didn't say much as was he usual response to people he didn't know well. Alex tossed the apple up and down a few times "So Connor, do you regret thinking the way you do?" he asks. Connor shakes his head "I don't know what I should think. Some of my friends were hurt because I said something I shouldn't have. How can I be proud of that? Also, aren't you supposed to call me Zero?" he asks. Alex takes a bite out of the apple "First off, change doesn't happen without getting your hands dirty sometimes. Second, you're not some arbitrary code name those slime ball politicians and scientists slapped on you. You're Connor, plain and simple." he says. Connor doesn't say anything further and just continues eating his apple. Meanwhile, Alex was making notes on his phone such as "Doesn't react violently upon being rejected from a store. Seems quiet around those he doesn't know well."
She was about to begin writing when a Young Male elf with short blonde hair walked up to her desk, with his Naturan that looked to be part goat. A very fragile creature with silver hair. "Miss Jinxal?" The boys gentle, but curious voice rang. Music to Ophelia's ears.
"Mr. Louis i've told you several times its Professor now." She said seriously shuffling papers about on her desk. "Was there a question you had?" She looked up at him, her gaze shifting from him to his nervous looking Naturan.
"Er, actually I had a more personal question. What do you think about Naturans? Everyone seems to be worried that they want their independence and all that nonsense. Arent you worried a little bit?" He looked at Ophelia with such concern she couldnt help but chuckle lightly.
"My, my Mr Louis what an odd question. As a teacher I am not allowed to answer that." She looked down at her watch and waited for a minute. "Oh my seems its time for me to head home. Now that I am no longer your teacher for the day, I can tell you that I just wish the whole mess would blow over. Mr. Louis, they are creatures with the ability to think, process information, and grow. They are every bit as humanoid as us, now having said that I am no sympathizer. I am not against them either. I am a neutral party that will fight for no side." She stood up collecting her things in her satchel and smiling at the boy. "I would not worry about it so much my dear friend. Just remember to do unto others as you wish done to you. Others includes your dear, frightened friend here. Now then I really have business I must get to Mr. Louis. Have a good day, and i'll expect that paper I told you about on my desk first thing tomorrow morning." With that Ophelia walked out of her class room. She admired the halls as she walked through them, such a large university this one was. The highest rated academy in the nation, and she was the lead fire teacher. Truly an honor she never thought of receiving, but she was proud of. Once she made it outside she looked about and made her way home, hoping not to run into any trouble on the way there.
The young fox was well aware that she was his accessory, his prize, his way of saying, "Look at the beautiful, exotic women I attract, how they flock to me, how well they behave." She didn't mind. She preferred this. She'd been with him a little over two weeks, quiet and unassuming and Gods, dumb. So dumb. Pouring his drinks and sitting in his lap, and hearing him call her Babydoll, over and over.
As frustrating as it was, he was easily swayed. Convinced she was some floozy content with curling up by his fire, bringing him what he asked for, being his pet. He was stupid. Spoke freely of small uprisings, or discussions he'd heard among naturan workers. Told his friends about how the authorities would find out, where they'd look. Spoke of a naturan that people were calling 'Zero,' potentially dangerous, and the beginnings of their revolution.
Stupid man.
With a stumble, Amarette was brought to a stop, the hand around her waist pulling her in tight. Some sort of disagreement had arisen between an elderly woman and a shopkeeper. Though her ears were tucked beneath a silk scarf, a cheap attempt to hide one of her defining naturan features, she heard a few snippets that interested her. Mostly, 'that naturan boy.'
Oh. Well then. That changed things.
Turning to pout up to her companion, Amarette batted her thick eyelashes. "I'd so love one of those marvelous apples...do you think you could get me one? I promise I'll be very good and stay very, very still, so as not to cause trouble. Oh pretty, pretty please?"
He inhaled as though to tell her no, but staring at her pretty face had him sighing and agreeing, and giving her a loving swat on the bottom before he started towards the bickering people. With a quick smug smile, and a small laugh, she waded the opposite direction, easily dodging people and slipping towards some benches off to the side. Where would a naturan, who had caused trouble, go?
Away from the trouble.
Finally reaching the benches, she glanced around, noting the large academy on the hill (it really was pretty, if not horribly pretentious), the usual flow of shopping, nothing, nothing, nothing...ah! There! A rabbit naturan, nibbling an apple, only a few yards away. And a human next to him, scribbling away on a phone.
Damn.
But still, nothing saying she couldn't merely take a seat nearby and watch, right? Right. So she headed towards them, stopping a bit over and sitting on a bench beside the one they resided on. Settling herself down in an exaggerated manner, such that her tail fluffed out beneath her skirt and was noticeable to anyone who cared to look (and gave a flattering view of her slim legs). If her naturan Brother should need her, she was there, ready and willing to help.
"Frank, one of these days, I am going to turn you into breakfast." The woman sighed and sat up groggily, causing her tiny bed to creak in protest. The scruffy orange tabby, Frank, sensed that his work was done and scampered from the bedroom towards the kitchen, mewing excitedly. Clumsily staggering out of bed, the Naturan stifled a yawn and checked the beat-up cellphone that had been resting on the stack of milk crates which served as her nightstand. Just a few texts from co-workers but nothing too urgent. Grumbling about her stupid cat, the female rubbed the sleep from her eyes and glanced at the time. It was still pretty early in the morning, or at least early for a night-shift worker who just got home a few hours ago. Sighing as another pitiful meow echoed from the kitchen, the young Naturan shuffled out of her bedroom and stumbled towards the pantry. Finally silencing the orange cat-beast with offerings of kibble, the woman busied herself with making her own breakfast.
She was just finishing up the dishes when the familiar ringtone of her cell chirped from the bedroom. Dashing to grab it before the call went to voicemail, the woman answered it breathlessly, "Hello? Charlie here."
"Charlie, where the HELL are you?!" The bellowing snarl of her supervisor, exploded out of her phone's earpiece.
"S-Sir?" The Naturan woman stammered, holding her phone away from her ear, "I'm on the night-crew this week."
"I know that, you idiot! Apparently, your dense, scaly hide didn't get the memo but the Naturan crew is working a double-shift today. Everyone ELSE has been here since SIX IN THE MORNING! I expect you here in half an hour, otherwise you can start looking for a new job!" The seething rage of Charlie's supervisor was palpable even through her tiny phone, even after he had ended the call.
Panic flooded through her veins and Charlie tossed her phone on the bed, thrashing about as she tore off her pyjamas so she could get her work gear on. The crocodile Naturan bounded through the tiny apartment, grabbing her work shoes and a few personal things, stuffing them into a well-patched backpack as she went. Dashing out of her apartment towards a nearby bike-rack, Charlie fumbled with the lock on her prized possession. It was a old bike with rust patches barely covered by red spray paint. It's vintage frame had been patched with new metal so many times it was probably more patch-job than original, but it was perfect in every way to Charlie. It could support her weight, was surprisingly responsive, and could sprint beautifully; this red patch-work piece of metal was everything she needed from a city bike.
Finally freeing the bike from the lock, Charlie swung her leg over the seat and took off, sprinting at a reckless pace down the streets. She was used to riding on the main roads but today was different, the Naturan would have to take a few shortcuts in order to get to the worksite in time. Charlie heard a furious yell behind her when she nimbly cut in front of an elf dressed in business wear as she zipped into a nearby alleyway. She honestly couldn't care less. Only one thing mattered right now, and that was getting to the construction site in time. Deftly, the crocodile Naturan sprinted through the alleyway and recklessly through traffic, causing several humans and elves to shout insults at her. Charlie glanced at the time quickly, ten minutes left... She'd need to take the marketplace shortcut, it was risky since there were so many pedestrians but desperate times called for desperate measures. Charlie veered into the market, weaving through the crowds of people as she passed through the main square.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until a shock of red hair caught the edge of her eye. The hair belonged to a grizzled human but the Naturan sitting beside him was what really made her stare, she had seen that face before...but where? Then it hit her, that Naturan's face had been plastered all over the news for the past week. He was Connor Tavarin! Charlie was brought back to her senses suddenly when there was an ominous 'crunch' that came from her front wheel. In the split-second that she had time to realize that noise was very, very bad, her front bicycle tire seized up and sent her flying over the handlebars. Shit, she thought, before slamming into the ground.
Before Connor was able to think about his actions, someone on a bike came speeding through the marketplace. He noticed that the rider had looked at him before the front wheel of the bike locked up, sending her flying over the handlebars. Both Connor and Alex responded by rushing over to her aid. Some pedestrians laughed, others stayed quiet, and some even took pictures of the incident. Alex and Connor helped her up "Hey, are you okay? That didn't look like it was very fun." Connor says, hoping the rider wasn't hurt. Alex gave some of the surrounding people glares to get them to go about their own business. The crowd soon dispersed and Alex grinned "That's right, leave." he goes to investigate the bike "Wow, this thing's ancient...nice old model. A shame it's rusted all to hell." he says, admiring the old model. He goes over to Connor and the crocodile naturan with the rusted bike in tow "You were going pretty fast, ma'am. Got someplace you need to be I'm guessing? Can't blame you for having a busy lifestyle, but you have to watch out so you don't hurt yourself or anyone around you. Here's your bike by the way...hopefully it's not busted up beyond repair, but it's definitely seen better days." he says, rolling it over to her.
Connor avoided saying too much, not wanting anyone to get in trouble for his opinions. Still, he wanted to say something "You looked at me before the crash. I know you know who I am and I'll just tell you now...I'm nobody special. Don't take anything I say seriously...it's just the ramblings of an idiot. You'll just end up getting hurt if you follow what I say anyway." he said. He didn't want to sound too negative about his ideas, but he thought it was best to deter anyone from listening to him so they wouldn't get hurt because of him. Alex sighed "Kid don't be like that. Besides, that's not going to stop people anyway. If they listen to you it's because they think what you have to say is worth listening to whether you like it or not."
He finally spoke in a higher pitched voice of a snake. "Why, you know I always look forward to getting to know you my dearest Ophelia." He snickered and grinned. He looked down at her and licked his lips.
Ophelia just shook her head and said what she always did. "Sir, our relationship is strictly professional. It would not be appropriate to try and connect on an emotional level." She gulped and tried to pull away, but was stuck in the mans much stronger grip.
He stroked her hair and chuckled. "As I recall your no longer a teacher at this hour. That IS what you told that young man, isnt it?" He chuckled darkly. "You know my offer still stands, Ophelia."
"Sir-" She stammered and this time used a bit of force to tug herself away. "While I apreciate the offer, I cannot marry you."
"Oh? And why is that? You give me that every time, but with no reason. What is the deal? I have money, power, looks, and I control your salary." He brought his long finger to Ophelia's chin and had their eyes meet. "What more do you want?"
She pushed him away slightly and looked back to her books, not wanting to see him any longer. "I want someone who would treat me as a person, not an object. I am sorry sir, but we are on a strictly professional relationship." She gathered her things and stuffed them roughly in her satchel. "I'll have no more of this. See you at work tommorrow, Dean." She started walking when he called after her.
"You will come with me," The words left him with lustful eyes and a disgusting grin. "Sooner or later Ophelia, I love you."
Ophelia huffed and continued walking. She needed to go to the market, she'd have no more of this. Always her, always harrassing her. Why couldnt she do anythign about it? She threw her arms up in the air and growled. So bothersome that Dean Charles. She'd made her way to the market and was about to stop for a basket of Apples, when she saw a Naturan woman fall off her bicycle. After seeing little reaction from others she made her way over and looked over the woman. "Are you okay? Did someone push you?" The Elven woman was always quick to help, but unsure what to do outside of combat situations.
Still.
The reptilian naturan girl had come flying in at a high speed. Obviously late, probably to one of the slave-like jobs naturan had to hold. It made her fur stand on end when she thought about it. Enslaved, paid next to nothing, mistreated and abused at every opportunity, and people were surprised the naturan acted out?
But those WERE some of her brethren over there, and she could pick out the human male she'd come with searching for her in the crowd. And the naturan girl was very pretty. So, with little flourish, Amarette stood, and stalked over to the gaggle all surrounding the bike, face scrunched into a sad expression.
"Oh, goodness!" she mewed, "that was quite a nasty fall! Are you alright, miss? You must be pretty late, to be going that fast!" Pulling her lips into a smile, she swished her tail beneath her skirt and glanced over to the rabbit. "Or maybe just excited to meet our little local celebrity here. I know I am!"
Charlie was vaguely aware of two sets of hands helping her up. The crocodile-naturan wheezed slightly as she stood up, taking a moment to let her body and mind to register the crash. Nothing felt hurt, but then again, she could be in shock. The young woman briefly looked herself over, finding that her only injuries were a scratched forearm and a scraped up shoulder. Whew, she thought to herself, that could have been a lot worse.
"I'm fine, thanks. I've got a tough hide," Charlie growled softly to Connor, warily watching the red-haired human wheel over her bike. The man had been polite to her so far but that did nothing to dispel her worry. Humans had this strange knack for being unpredictable, which Charlie realized was quite ironic coming from her.
The naturan woman murmured her thanks to the human as she took her bike back from him.
"It's an old Iron Paladin model, they used to be popular about forty years ago. I was lucky to find it in one piece," Charlie muttered as she inspected her bicycle, making a mental note that nothing seemed dented or broken so there must be something wrong with the front gear cluster that caused the crash, "The frame's fine even though it's rusted, I'll just need to take the clusters apart when I get home after...work."
The crocodile-naturan turned pale, barely registering what Connor said to her. Maybe if she sprinted there she could still make it... Charlie stammered slightly, the young woman wasn't the best with words but she didn't want to ignore what the rabbit-naturan had said. "L-look, I don't think your ideas are bad, they've just...well, they've just made life a little complicated for some of us," Charlie blurted out as she hefted her bike onto her shoulder, noticing a young elven woman and a fox-naturan who had been sitting nearby rush over.
"Really, I'm fine. I've got a thick hide," She said nervously, backing away from the newcomers. There were too many people around her now; she was just a naturan, so why was everyone so concerned for her safety?
"Connor, it was nice meeting you but I'm going to lose my job if I stick around. Thanks for helping me up," Charlie turned on her heel and started to run from the plaza of the marketplace. Maybe there was still a chance that she could make it to the construction site! The crocodile-naturan had barely made it over the edge of the main square when the familiar little ringtone of her cell phone chirped out of her backpack. Sighing sadly, Charlie fished it out of her bag and prepared herself, clicking the 'answer' button as she held the phone away from her ear.
"Charlie here..."
The number of expletives and insults that her supervisor screamed out of her tiny phone could have made a sailor blush and she was fairly confident that most of the plaza had heard him ream her out. One thing was certain though, she was definitely and without a doubt, fired.
Connor sighs, looking at Amarette "Celebrity is a bit much...I'm probably more of a public nuisance than a celebrity around here." he says. He was thinking about what Charlotte had said. He knew he had made life complicated for a lot of naturan recently and that was definitely not something he was proud of, but the fact that she still thought his ideas had merit made him feel slightly better. "I've made life pretty hard for a lot of naturan with my outburst back then. I don't want to make things worse than they already are. At the same time though, I don't want them to stay the way they are. I can't decide what I want to do." he runs his hand through his hair in frustration. "Sorry, I'm rambling. I have to go meet with my friend, the big guy that just ran off. Yes, he is my friend even though he's human." he turns around. He pauses for a moment before turning back to Amarette "You can follow if you want." he said. He starts to walk off, hoping she would actually follow since he didn't want anyone to take advantage of her flirtatious act. He had heard far too many stories of naturan trying to attract the rich and powerful in an attempt to make their lives easier. None of those stories ever ended happily.
Meanwhile, Alex finds the construction yard as he's approached by a worker "Sir you can't be here!" he shouts to him. Alex pulls out his ID "Major Alexander Maximus Brullen. I'm here to investigate some rumors. If you see a brown haired rabbit naturan, let him pass too. He's with me." he says. The worker nervously and quickly salutes "I-I'm sorry sir! You may pass." he steps aside. Alex walks passed, eyes scanning the area for any sign of Charlotte or the foreman. He takes note of the naturan workers. "Bags under their eyes...about to collapse from exhaustion and it's not even nine yet. This isn't right." he mutters to himself as he continues his search.
Incontinently he was confronted at the gate by the same tired naturan worker, who distractedly tells him to 'Get lost', though in much more vulgar words, when the rider ignores him and carries on into the yard the worker gives chase, attempting to grab him by the shoulder. Before the worker can actually make contact, the rider suddenly spins and grabs the workers wrist with his free hand, pulling him forwards and whilst the naturan is off balance he continues the turn by driving his kneecap into the back of the workers knee joint, causing him to painfully fall forwards, before grabbing him under the rim of the hard hat and tearing it off, in a snapping motion his brings his elbow down, smashing the worker on the back of the skull and driving his face into the dirt, breaking his nose and rendering him unconscious. The rider dusts himself off and quickly carries on searching the yard for Alex, trying to make sure he isn't seen by anyone else along the way.
As they grew closer to the construction yard, she sidled up closer to Connor's shoulder, fixing him with a warm gaze. "So, Mister Rioteer. Tell me all about what happened. I am just ever so curious to find out!" Batting her thick dark lashes, she tilted her head the way she'd practiced for months: mouth parted slightly into a pretty pout, head turned just so so that her skin seemed to glow in the sunlight, eyes fixated on him and only him. This very stare had worked on human after human after human, and had secured her a good place in their standings, along with many presents. But on a naturan, one of her own, it should work twice as well...shouldn't it?
Amarette's nose twitched, and her tail fluffed out as a certain scent met her senses. Something wasn't right. It smelled like gasoline, motor oil and blood. Working at bars had made her sure of one thing: that combination was never good. Dropping all pretense of being flirtatious and fell into animal mode, ears perked, nose sniffing the air to try and find the source. "Something is wrong here," she mumbled, and set into a sprint towards the yard, sharp eyes drifting over everything until eventually finding an unconscious naturan worker face down in the dirt. Panic crawled through her stomach. One of her own, her brother-in-arms, attacked in a place where he tries meekly to get by.
"Connor!" she called wildly, "Help! Quickly!"
